Going to the spa is potentially the best way to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is just enough to unwind and relax a bit without taking too much time off work, getting you ready to jump back into action with refreshed energy the next day.
A spa day is commonly associated with saunas, facials and massages. While we usually pay great attention to the skin on our face and body, we tend to forget a part that plays just as an important role in our appearance – the scalp.
More often than not, we seek out treatments that make use all sorts of shampoos, conditioners and serums solely on the hair itself. But a healthy scalp is essential for luscious lock and Thermae wants to ensure just that with its new head spa treatment.
The head spa is not just a treatment, it is a 50-minute relaxation and wellness journey. Using an array of Thermae’s own beauty products line, Sirene, and several tools, it also includes a moisturising facial and neck and shoulder massage to ensure that every part of your, well, head, gets the pampering it deserves.
The massage therapist starts by washing the hair with a jasmine and chamomile-infused shampoo that is meant to not only thoroughly remove any oil, product built-up and dead skin, but also hydrate and sooth the scalp. At the same time as giving that refreshing feeling of having your hair cleaned, the sweet scent of jasmine is that much more relaxing, reminiscing of a late summer evening garden walk.
After rinsing with the help of the ingenious machine that shoots out water through multiple nozzles to ensure a thorough cleaning, comes the massage, where the tools shown above come into play, along with a nourishing hair oil, massage cream and rose water. At this stage, I lost all sense of time and space, as head massages are by far my favourite. With my eyes covered and fully immersed in the relaxing atmosphere, as much as I tried to fight it, I eventually dozed off under the gentle touches of the beautician.
I woke up during the second shampooing, with the same jasmine and chamomile product, which ensures none of the massage oil remains in your hair or on your scalp to clog the follicles. This is followed by a nourishing conditioner with lavender extract to strengthen the hair and sooth the scalp, a much-needed help when you spend the entire day in the sauna and water, which can weaken the hair and irritate the scalp.
“This treatment is rooted in Ayurveda, the science of life and art of healing. In India, scalp massages are part of daily life. They relieve stress and tension and promote scalp health”, Thermae explains. “A healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy, beautiful hair – something Ayurveda practitioners have known for centuries!”
The treatment is great for both men and women. It is available at Thermae in Boetfort and Grimbergen, at the latter being available for the promotional launch price of €68 since the machine has just been installed, while in Boetfort it is only a little higher, at €72 per person. Keep in mind before booking that it is not suitable for those with hair extensions, wigs or dreadlocks.
