There are some buildings in life we, the general public, only get to wonder at from a distance. Literally or figuratively. Because even if you may visit them on the inside, they’ll forever remain out of reach. You’ll never be able to buy them, you’ll never be able to live in them, you’ll never even spend the night inside. However, for a happy few, things are different. Because of their family history or because of their job, some of these buildings suddenly become their home. And no, you don’t need to be the Queen to be able to live in a historical gem.
One of those ‘unreachable’ buildings (for most of us anyway) is the Tower of London. Contrary to what you might think given its name, the Tower is actually a whole castle. The name only derives from the White Tower, built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The building played an important role throughout history, but since the Second World War, it’s been open to the public. Historically, the Crown Jewels have been guarded in the tower for centuries and now, most of us visit the Tower just to look at those magnificent treasures.

Historical, but not always handy
However, for Megan Clawson, things are different. Her father being a Beefeater – one of the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London – she actually gets to live inside the Tower. Not your usual crib for a 22-year-old and that’s exactly why Megan shares her unusual living situation on TikTok. Because aside from being of course totally envious, living in an actual castle can sometimes be a tad unhandy. When ordering food, for example, the delivery person can only get to the gate of the grounds.
I can’t actually put in my own address – if a delivery driver tried to get there, he’d end up face to face with a whole group of security.
Megan said in a TikTok video
Meaning you have to be willing to walk half a mile to get from your apartment to the gate if you fancy a cheeky takeaway pizza. So no running to the door in your pajamas.
@meganambxr (pls don’t take everything I say seriously) but here is the house tour (sort of) that everyone keeps requesting #fyp #toweroflondon ♬ Sunny Day – Ted Fresco
And as it turns out, the Tower of London has another few interesting features. For example, there’s an in-house pub, where only Beefeaters in uniform and their company are welcome. It’s not impossible that a few ghosts roam the castle’s corridors and, when a little tipsy, climbing all those tower steps can be quite the challenge…
