If you are longing for a weekend in nature, a perfect place to go is definitely Fužine in Croatia. Located in the region of Gorski kotar, the green heart of Croatia, the picturesque place with a mix of continental and mediterranean climate is beautifully set right by the lake, in the green hills, close to the mountains, national parks and even the sea.

With a long tourist tradition, there are many beautiful places where you can stay, from the hotel in the very center to a number of privately-owned, tastefully and traditionally decorated accommodations. Our choice was Villa Moya which turned out to be just perfect for the weekend stay. A cozy apartment with a beautiful view right at the lake Bayer was great for the morning coffee on the terrace. The welcoming hosts explained everything to us about the surroundings and gave some very good tips on what to see and do and some recommendations on how to spend our time. During the day you can also just enjoy the common sun deck while the small relaxation center with jacuzzi and sauna were just perfect to relax after the whole day’s activities.

The first thing to do is definitely take a walk around the beautiful lake Bajer –one of the three accumulation lakes that were built in this area. If you don’t feel like walking the whole way, you can also take a tourist train for the 6 km long path or even rent a horse carriage – in any case you will be amazed by the beauty of the nature opening up in front of as you are passing by. Stop at one of the bars by the lake to chill and enjoy the fresh air before continuing back to the center. If you’d like something different take a boat ride to enjoy the lake or even rent a canoe – the views are different and definitely worth it!

If you’re up for longer walks, choose one of the many hiking paths of the surrounding hills and don’t be surprised if you meet some of the forest friends like a deer or a rabbit. Actually, if you are lucky, you may even see them early in the morning from the Villa Moya view, just next to the edge of the wood.

When in Fužine, you need to try some delicious food of the region, from trout of the rivers, frogs of the lakes to game stews. For those who’d like opt for a vegetarian dish, you can choose between many dishes like mushroom soup and risotto, potato with cabbage or exquisite cheese. As a dessert there is definitely all different types of strudels – we tried the berry one with some vanilla ice cream on the side and loved it!

One of the places to visit is for sure Cave Vrelo, only 3 km away from Fužine that is believed to be between 3,5 to 4 million years old. Though only 300m long, the cave has beautiful insides with water coming from a spring just 50m away and some amazing cave decorations, nature’s work of art.
Not something you would necessarily expect here in Croatia but if you are up for some wild west experience – the Cowboy Village Roswell awaits you. Created in 2015 on the remains of the old Winnetou film set, it offers a true western experience. Here you can enjoy fun activities like horseback riding, horseshoe throwing, Winchester shooting or try out archery.
Last but not least, with its perfect location and if looking for a day trip, by car you can easily visit Risnjak National Park, the true green paradise or head to the Adriatic coast that is only a half an hour drive away – whatever you choose, it is guaranteed you will enjoy your stay. I know I will be back soon!
