The U.S. are currently co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The large-scale event – which is spread across sixteen cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada – has led to some remarkable initiatives. One of those concerns is operating aircraft in areas around stadiums and fan zones.

On 2026 FIFA World Cup match days, strict temporary flight restrictions apply. All aircraft, including drones, that have not obtained permission from air traffic control are banned from operating within a three-nautical-mile radius around and up to 3,000 feet above stadiums.

Around and above fan zones, similar restrictions apply on match days, with unauthorised aircraft being banned within a one-nautical-mile radius around and up to 1,000 feet above the designated areas.

However, according to the Transportation Security Administration, not everyone seems to be obeying the match day rules.

“The federal government, led by the White House Task Force, and in partnership with the FBI, DHS/TSA, FAA, and state/local law enforcement have implemented the most comprehensive airspace security and drone mitigation effort in US history for the FIFA World Cup 2026, resulting in the seizure of more than 300 unauthorised drones to date. Unauthorised drone flights in restricted areas are a serious violation of federal law. Enforcement is swift and proactive,” the TSA said in a statement.

In order to respond as quickly as possible to any drones approaching stadiums and fan zones, the federal authorities have deployed so-called counter-drone teams. Not only do those detect unauthorised drones, but they have also been designed to neutralise the aircraft. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, meant to finance equipment, software, and training.

The Miami office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly issued citations to 49 drone operators, while confiscating 54 drones in Florida alone. In Kansas City, Missouri, eight drones and their controllers were confiscated by the FBI over the course of a week. They were accused of violating the flight restrictions.

Those who do not follow the restrictions regarding drones and other aircraft put themselves at risk of hefty consequences. The Federal Aviation Administration mentions fines of up to $100,000, while criminal prosecution and seizure of their aircraft are also part of the risks involved.

The anti-drone measures during the 2026 FIFA World Cup can be seen as part of a broader U.S. policy. An executive order signed by President Donald Trump in 2025 was specifically aimed at bolstering the country’s defences against drone attacks. Ever since, country-drone teams have been deployed at sections of the U.S.-Mexico border and at a selection of large public gatherings, out of fear for possible terrorist attacks.

The consumer electronics and appliance giant Newsan has promised Noblex televisions to the first 100 people who could prove their application to travel to the US was denied between January and June 2026. “Give us your denied visa and take a free TV,” the marketing campaign declared on Instagram. The concept proved immediately popular, with queues supervised by security guards developing outside Newsan headquarters in the Argentinian capital and images showing people brandishing their new 32-inch HD LED smart TVs.

The report, FIFA World Cup Border Management & Visa Facilitation: 20 Years of Evolution (2006–2026), released by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) at the start of the 23^rd tournament, highlights the significant changes achieved over two decades and shows how major sporting events have become laboratories for faster, smarter and safer travel.

“The FIFA World Cup has consistently demonstrated that border management can evolve from a barrier into an enabler of global connectivity”, said Gloria Guevara, WTTC’s President & CEO.

This year, the challenge was threefold. For the first time ever, 48 teams are competing across three host countries, necessitating an unparalleled degree of coordination between various border systems. At its core is the so-called “trusted traveller“ model, which enables pre-approved, low-risk passengers to enjoy faster and smoother border clearance, thereby reducing queues and uncertainty upon arrival.

In the months preceding the tournament, more than 5.9 million ESTA applications were submitted for entry into the United States alone, with over 5 million being approved, allowing eligible travellers to enter visa-free. More than 1.6 million travellers enrolled in Trusted Traveller Programmes (TTP), including Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI, enabling faster processing across the three host countries.

Digital tools such as FIFA PASS and COMPASS have also supported this transition. FIFA PASS helps prioritise visa appointments for ticket holders, while COMPASS uses AI to guide visitors through entry requirements.

For Guevara, this marks “the emergence of a new model for travel, one that is digital, secure and seamless”. She says that the lessons learned from major tournaments show how digital identity systems and stronger pre-departure checks can improve security and the traveller experience.

Mexico has also introduced measures allowing citizens from over 65 countries to enter the country visa-free for stays of up to 180 days. Travellers holding valid visas or residency permits from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, or the Schengen Area are also exempt from additional visa requirements, which helps fans to move more easily between host nations. The country’s Viajero Confiable, or Trusted Traveller programme, enables eligible passengers to use automated kiosks and speed up border procedures.

Canada encouraged football supporters to reference ’FIFA World Cup 26′ in their applications to facilitate processing. The country’s NEXUS programme provided expedited entry through dedicated kiosks and digital systems. The ArriveCAN app allowed travellers to complete customs and immigration declarations up to 72 hours before arrival and access express lanes at major airports, including Toronto and Vancouver.

None of this arrived fully formed. The 2006 World Cup in Germany focused on harmonising Schengen travel, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa introduced event visas with pre-screening, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil built a dedicated legal framework, the 2018 World Cup in Russia launched the Fan ID, and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar expanded the concept with the Hayya platform, which later became a permanent national e-visa system.

The accommodation and match double whammy is not just a treat for visitors, Airbnb says, but also for hosts, for whom it means “something beyond hospitality.” In promotional material, the platform cites Federico Zimmerman, an Airbnb host in Dallas, Texas, who embraces the chance to welcome guests to a local game. “I grew up playing soccer—it’s been part of my life since I could walk. Getting to share that love of the game with guests, and actually get them into a World Cup match, is something I never could have imagined when I first listed my home on Airbnb. This is what hosting is all about,” Zimmerman said.

That enthusiasm has been tempered, though, in recent months—a period in which travel and hospitality stakeholders and sports commentators alike have expressed concerns over muted transport and hotel bookings, leading to fears over match attendance and atmosphere during a World Cup build-up that has been dominated by President Trump’s controversial foreign policies, immigration agenda, and travel restrictions.

Nonetheless, Airbnb has gone big on the sporting extravaganza. The platform has gifted over 1,300 free tickets—from surprise match experiences for guests already booked during the group stage, to tickets now included with select future stays in all host cities from group and knockout stages all the way to the final.

The Federation highlights the racquet sport’s popularity, counting 35 million players around the world, and court capacity growth of more than 15% in a single year to reach 77,000 globally across 24,627 clubs and facilities. Many of those courts are appearing at hotels, apartment complexes, and resorts, which are using padel’s immense cachet to attract clientele.

Europe leads the way, with over 51,000 courts, followed by the Americas (18,500), where Mexico and Florida are seeing strong growth, and Asia (over 4,500), with Saudi Arabia the leader.

Within Europe, Spain and Italy are described as countries where the market is “consolidated,” while Eastern Europe is “in start-up phase” and “smaller countries” such as Switzerland (+400 courts ), Greece and Austria (+300 courts), Lithuania (+200 courts), Cyprus (+200) and Ireland (+100), are “ones to keep an eye on,” the Federation says. This interest in smaller nations ties in with one of padel’s main advantages over tennis, for example: more courts can be fitted into a compact space, meaning nations with mountainous terrain or little available room can still build a padel community.

More participants means more travellers who are interested in playing padel while they are away. Luciano Cestari, founder of LC Tennis & Padel Holidays in the UK, told Travel Tomorrow that client interest has pivoted. In 2021, his programmes were split 50/50 between tennis and padel. However, in 2026, nine out of ten of his packages will be padel-focused. Already operating in the UK, Portugal, and Menorca, Cestari, who “followed the birth of the sport in his native Argentina,” plans to expand to Italy next year.

More padel fans also means an appetite for events, and, as is well-documented, events are driving travel too. The International Padel Federation report highlights the “major global tours and international national team competitions organised by FIP — from Premier Padel and the CUPRA FIP Tour, to the FIP Promises, the FIP World and Continental Cups, and a brand-new circuit for amateur players for 2026, FIP Beyond.

These sporting fixtures involve participants, and are attended by supporters, from dozens of countries across the world and have been hosted in a diverse range of locations from Seville to Kuwait.

As Luigi Carraro, FIP President, said in a statement, the growth of padel embraces “an ever-widening circle of stakeholders.” That is a development that brings not only opportunities, he says, but “greater responsibility: to preserve the values that make Padel unique: accessibility, inclusivity, respect, and to ensure that as we grow, we also elevate the culture around our sport.”

Not many people get to see Antarctica, and even fewer get to experience the continent like those running the Antarctic Ice Marathon. With an average temperature of -20°C, snow, ice, and what is likely to be a strong wind, this race is not for the fainthearted. Both the Frozen Continent Half-Marathon and the Antarctic Ice Marathon will provide runners with unforgettable sights, but given the USD $22,500 entry fee, the race clearly is not fit for everyone. On Saturday 14 March, Formula 1 announced to be cancelling the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix for the 2026 season, which were scheduled to take place from 10-12 April and from 17-19 April respectively. The decision comes as the conflict in the Middle East continues, with both countries having been struck by Iranian missiles and drones since the outbreak of the war at the end of February 2026.

“While this was a difficult decision to take, it is unfortunately the right one at this stage, considering the current situation in the Middle East. I want to take this opportunity to thank the FIA as well as our incredible promoters for their support and total understanding, as they were looking forward to hosting us with their usual energy and passion. We cannot wait to be back with them as soon as the circumstances allow us to do so”, said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

The organisation said it would not be rescheduling the races or replacing them, bringing the total number of F1 races in 2026 to 22. Moreover, the Formula 2, Formula 3, and F1 ACADEMY rounds have also been cancelled. With Bahrain and Saudi Arabia paying two of the largest hosting fees on the circuit, the cancellations cause a commercial hit estimated at over £100 million, which would normally have been split between the teams and the F1 organisation.

The decision means yet another blow for the tourism sector in the region. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the conflict in the Middle East is costing the region’s visitor economy “at least $600 million per day”.

The release will also include immersive pop-up experiences in Seoul and Shanghai, highlighted by a large Mickey Mouse sculpture displayed next to a Formula 1 car as part of the “Fuel the Magic” campaign. While many are viewing the Winter Olympics from the comfort of their own home, some lucky sports enthusiasts have the chance to view the competition from up close. And what better way to make the most out of that happy occasion than by coupling the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics with some local sightseeing? 

In order to give Olympic tourists at Cortina d’Ampezzo another way to explore the region, Uber has launched the so-called Uber Snowmobile. The special service will only be available on weekends throughout February 2026 and became possible thanks to a partnership with local mountain specialists Snowdreamers.

It’s about turning a winter trip into a truly once-in-a-lifetime mountain adventure”, said Anabel Diaz, Vice President, EMEA Mobility at Uber.

Users can book a tour for free via the Uber app on a first-come, first-served basis starting from 4 February. The ride includes a bus transfer for up to eight people from Cortina to the departure spot for the snowmobiles, which will then set course for the famous local tourism hotspot known as the Three Peaks of Lavaredo. Every vehicle offers room for two riders, who will follow the instructor going ahead.

During the one-hour guided tour, participants will get the chance to discover the forest and alpine routes surrounding Cortina in a different way, offering panoramic views of the Dolomite mountains. Riders will be able to travel at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour on the 7-kilometre route towards the Three Peaks and might even spot some wildlife on the way.

As was to be expected, the first available slots for the Uber Snowmobile rides sold out quickly. However, the company has stated that it would be adding free spots throughout the month.

In what has already proven to be a tense stance towards the Olympics and their impact on local life, the Uber initiative is not likely to be welcomed by everyone. Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner previously accused Olympic tourists of bringing “only noise, traffic and aggression” to the mountains, a statement that seems to be reflected at least partially in the Uber Snowmobile initiative.
