Endless sandy beaches, sunny tanning sessions and cocktail sipping are something we associate more with, let’s say, the Canaries, the Côte d’Azur or the Caribbean. Nevertheless, the United Kingdom can be the perfect seaside destination you’re looking for. It might be a bit different and you should definitely think of some rainy day-alternatives but, on a more positive note, it’ll be less crowded and you won’t have too much difficulty finding an untouched spread of nature.
But where to go to when you’re headed for a beachside holiday in the UK? With a coastline this long, choosing can be the hardest part of the planning process. You might be tempted to go to one of the better-known seaside towns like Brighton but according to a new poll, you would be wrong to do so.
Peace and quiet
Which? asked 4.000 people about their favourite seaside town in the United Kingdom and this resulted in a surprising little list. At the top of that listed shines the quiet town of Bamburgh in Northumberland. However, before booking a hotel and packing your bags, it might be wise to know what you’re getting into. Firstly, those who like to do a bit of shopping while on holiday would be disappointed with Bamburgh, as the local shopping facilities are almost nonexistent. And if you’re a party animal who loves to go out every night, you might want to look for another seaside destination. Then what’s so special about Bamburgh, you ask? Well, with the town being located just besides the local castle, you’re definitely up for a bit of time travelling. And with the omnipresent nature, the quiet, the dunes and the pristine 3 kilometre-long beach, well, it’s an introvert’s dream come true. And for once, you won’t have trouble finding a spot on the beach – always a win.
However, if all that peace and quiet isn’t your cup of tea, there are of course other British seaside towns to explore. Saint Andrews, for example, might be a better destination if you’re looking for a bit of shopping and nightlife opportunities. Filey, on the other hand, is a good option if you want to save a little on your hotel room.
