Vlaams-Brabant has no lack of beautiful parks and gardens, full of history and natural beauty, which offer a never-ending amount of fun for adults and children alike. In order to make those places as unforgettable as possible – even for the youngest ones in the family – both VISIT Vlaams-Brabant and many of the individual locations have put together kid-friendly photo quests.

For example, VISIT Vlaams-Brabant has designed five itineraries in just as many different locations: Gaasbeek Castle, Beersel Castle, Park of Tervuren, recreation park Zoet Water, and Park Drie Fonteinen. Thanks to the dedicated hiking sheets designed specifically in such a way as to keep children entertained, you will be able to keep track of your journey, while a special photo quest will keep the youngest ones engaged. The sheets also include some noteworthy places of interest, such as an unmissable ice cream shop or a playground.

One of the photo quest options is the Brabant draught horse walk, where hikers get to explore the grounds surrounding Gaasbeek Castle. Winding paths, grand forests, and impressive castles might well lead you towards thee grandest inhabitants of the region: the Brabant draught horses. During the walk, children are invited to count the ducks and to spot the castle’s fences, among other things. At the castle, children who just can’t get enough can even get their hands on an activity booklet called Arnoldus the Mouse for some extra fun, which may or nor be followed by a stop at ice cream shop Krijmerie.

The Meise Botanic Garden, too, has a range of kid-friendly activities on offer, especially during the Summer months. One of the most accessible ones is the King Amaryllo treasure hunt, which is perfect for children aged 4 to 12. Through a special activity booklet, kids and their parents are taken on a tour through the park, which varies slightly depending on the season. During Summer, the emphasis lies on the tropical plants decorating the terraces and on the Culinary Garden, where everything grows in abundance. Adventurous souls can enjoy on a walk on the Amaze-Your-Feet Path.

When visiting a park, garden, or even a museum in Vlaams-Brabant, do not hesitate to ask for some kid-friendly activities. And to turn that visit into a true adventure, make sure to kickstart the experience with the right gear. A little backpack with a snack and even a pair of binoculars will make the youngest family members feel as if they were to set off on a once-in-a-lifetime quest.

Become the next cycling superstar

Belgium is well-known for its cycling heroes, including Remco Evenepoel, Thibau Nys, Jasper Stuyven, and Eddy Merckx. Vlaams-Brabant in particular is home to some of the most iconic Belgian cycling routes, taking tourists and sports enthusiasts on a picturesque tour through the countryside.

Those who want to follow in the tyre tracks of Eddy Merckx or Sven Nys, while enjoying some quality time with their family and training their kids to become the next cycling superstars, can do so thanks to a selection of seven family-friendly bike trails.

Ranging in length from 23 kilometers to 47 kilometers from start to finish, the trails are easier and safer versions of the world-famous cycling routes which you might recognise from the official races. On the one hand, they are easy enough to take turn them into a family-friendly day trips, on the other hand, even adults will be happy when it’s time for a pitstop at the local ice cream shop. Take a walk on the wild side

Although Brussels might be just around the corner, Vlaams-Brabant has no lack of nature. With its formidable forests, wide fields, and winding waterways, it makes for the perfect place to go on a hike and reconnect with your wild side.

However, keeping kids entertained when walking for a couple of hours on end is no easy task. Luckily, VISIT Vlaams-Brabant has made a handy list of six kid-friendly walks, which all have something unforgettable – and adventurous – to offer.

During the 4.5-kilometer-long Zoet Waterwandeling, for example, kids will get the opportunity to drink from a natural source, to wander around the forest, and to leave all leftover energy at a gigantic playground. Those who want to make the fun last even longer can book a stay at one of the tipi tents at the nearby Duckwing, immersed in nature.

For those who prefer an activity booklet over a playground, the Witte door Zichem walk will make the ideal summery day trip. During the 3.3-kilometre walk, which starts at Zichem Station, the youngest ones will be asked to complete a number of challenges, while funny comics and interesting facts provide some extra entertainment on the way. And if you choose to book a stay at the local Link farm, they might even get to ride a tractor or hug some farm animals.

No matter the hiking route you end up choosing, family-friendly adventures are guaranteed.

Developed by Floreal Holidays, the site aims to offer visitors a nature-focused getaway while demonstrating that tourism can be both environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.

Sustainability

La Hameau de la Semois is eco-friendly in almost every sense of the word, hence the “eco-village” label.

The site comprises 100 all-wood lodges, with the timber sourced locally from the forests of the Belgian Ardennes. Eco-designed and fully demountable should the need ever arise, the lodges embrace a sustainable architectural approach that seeks to minimise environmental impact.

The sustainability theme extends beyond the accommodation itself. Visitors will not find traditional air conditioning systems here, while outdoor lighting is deliberately kept to a minimum during the evening to help preserve the natural surroundings. Eco-friendly products are used throughout the site, and the kitchen also prioritises local and responsible sourcing, including free-range poultry.

Even seemingly small details reflect the site’s environmental philosophy. The flowers displayed across the domain are sourced from a nearby florist rather than picked from the surrounding countryside.

The project’s environmental credentials were highlighted by Marie-Julie Nemery, Mayor of Bouillon, during the official inauguration on 6 June. She noted that, among the various proposals submitted for the redevelopment of the site, Floreal Holidays’ project stood out for its strong sustainability focus.

Social tourism

La Hameau de la Semois is Floreal Holidays’ newest destination, but it represents much more than the opening of another holiday village.

The organisation’s business model is rooted in the concept of social tourism, seeking to ensure that holidays remain accessible to as many people as possible.

Speaking at the inauguration, Group President Werner Van Heetvelde highlighted a statistic that may surprise many Belgians. According to estimates, around 20% of the population cannot afford even a one-week holiday.

The issue is one that Floreal Holidays has sought to address since its creation. Founded by a Belgian trade union movement in the 1920s, the organisation was established to help make holidays accessible to working families. Through a network of hotels, holiday parks and campsites located along the Belgian coast and in the Ardennes, the organisation continues to pursue that mission today.

Nearly a century later, Van Heetvelde believes the challenge remains just as relevant.

“The aim is to help our members and others enjoy a decent break during the year,” he told Travel Tomorrow.

While acknowledging that such a situation remains an indictment of modern society, particularly in a relatively affluent country such as Belgium, he said it underlines the continuing importance of social tourism initiatives.

A new addition to the family

The new site stands out for the range of accommodation and facilities on offer. The lodges can accommodate between two and six guests. The smallest units resemble comfortable hotel rooms, while five premium lodges include additional features such as sun loungers, bathrobes and welcome amenities.

Prices start at €148 for a two-night stay for two people, while motorhome pitches are available from €19 per night, helping to support the site’s commitment to accessible tourism.

There are also spacious pitches for motorhomes and a dedicated meadow beside the Semois River for tents, complete with electricity and water connections.

One notable feature of the site is Brasserie Halliru. Its culinary consultant, Tristan Martin, trained in several renowned establishments in Belgium and France.

Restaurant manager François Louis said the team is still settling into its new surroundings but believes the venue has significant potential.

“It is all still very new, including the team, but we have a very good product to offer,” he said.

Like many aspects of the park, the restaurant places a strong emphasis on local producers and regional products.

The bar stocks Arduenna, an organic gin produced around 20 kilometres away, alongside Ardennes Spritz, a local artisanal interpretation of the Italian classic. Belgian beer enthusiasts can also sample Rochehaut, brewed less than 10 kilometres from the site.

The menu focuses on Belgian and French classics, including burgers, meatballs and pasta dishes. Open daily during the holiday season from June to September, the restaurant welcomes both park guests and outside visitors.

Things to do

For lovers of the outdoors, the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for exploration without requiring exceptional fitness levels.

A walk of around 1.5 kilometres along the Semois leads directly to Bouillon. Visitors are advised to follow the riverside path rather than the winding road, which may be less suitable for pedestrians.

The town’s most famous landmark is its castle, which has dominated the landscape for more than a thousand years. Perched on three rocky peaks overlooking the Semois, the fortress is one of Belgium’s best-known historic sites and attracts around 135,000 visitors annually.

Bouillon itself is worth exploring throughout the year and hosts a popular weekly market every Sunday morning.

Other activities in the area include kayaking on the Semois and hiking through the surrounding countryside, with information on local routes available from reception. Future plans for the site may also include guided walks and an expanded activities programme for both children and adults.

Located just a few kilometres from the French border, the park attracts visitors from across Europe, although most guests currently come from Flanders and the Netherlands. Since opening, the site has steadily built a reputation among travellers seeking a slower pace of life.

The motto displayed throughout the park is “slow life”. Whether visitors come for the natural surroundings, the sustainability credentials or simply a few days away from everyday pressures, La Hameau de la Semois offers a reminder that tourism can be both environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.

Getting there

La Hameau de la Semois is located around three minutes by car from Bouillon and can be reached from Brussels in approximately one hour and 50 minutes, or around two hours from Antwerp. The route passes through some of the Ardennes’ most attractive landscapes and is easily accessible via Exit 25 of the E411 motorway.

Tram 44

For families staying in Brussels and travelling to Tervuren, the fun begins right from the start. Since its inauguration in 1968, the iconic Tram 44 has been connecting Tervuren to the Montgomery station in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.

Tervuren Park

Speaking of parks, Tervuren’s very own public green space is well worth a visit, especially with children. Its impeccable lawns are the ideal setting for a picnic on a hot day, while the surrounding ponds and trees are sure to keep you cool.

Children can marvel at the local fauna and flora, which follows the seasons, making sure there is always something new to look at. Still not satisfied? Visit Tervuren has put together a playful photo bingo, keeping children actively engaged during a walk in the park.

AfricaMuseum

The AfricaMuseum might well be Tervuren’s most famous cultural hotspot. The permanent collection as well as the ever-changing temporary exhibitions have everything it takes to keep visitors of all ages engaged and coming back.

In order to make the visit even more worthwhile for kids, AfricaMuseum has developed the AfricaMuseumQuest. The museum game starts with an unexpected visit from two guests from the distant future. Players have to guess and puzzle their way through the various museum rooms, studying several objects from the permanent collection,  and help them out of their predicament. The AfricaMuseumQuest is ideal for 2 to 7 people aged 12 and above, with the average game lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterwards, players are free to explore the museum at their own pace.

Instagram Tour

Looking to visit Tervuren with kids who are interested in photography? The Instagram Tour takes you on a 7.5 kilometre-long walk through town, passing by no less than 20 photogenic locations in the centre of Tervuren, all of which guarantee a beautiful Instagram picture.

From cool street art to surprising views and from unusual buildings to nice places to eat and drink, their is something for everyone to be found en route. And while children will undoubtedly be smitten, the tour will also be able to keep adults entertained.

Farmer and Nature Walking Route

Sometimes, all you need is a little greenery, whether to relax or to play. For those who want to immerse themselves in nature, Tervuren has a lot to offer, including the Farmer and Nature Walking Route.

The route, which starts at the Pastorieplein in Vossem, takes adventure-loving parents and their kids on a 16-kilometre-long tour through the countryside. Picturesque farming landscapes and beautiful vistas along the route are sure to keep everyone entertained and to tire even the most active members of the family.

Voer and Warande Walk

Why settle for one hike when you can enjoy two? The Voer and Warande Walk combines two distinct routes, guiding visitors through Tervuren Park before leading them into the picturesque countryside around Vossem.

Overall, the 12.8-kilometre walk guides hikers along the narrow Voerwegje, the majestic Tervuren Park, a very old road that connected Namur to Mechelen, and through a vast landscape of fields with magnificent views. With such a varied landscape, children can’t be but entertained all along.

For those whose hiking-appetite still isn’t satisfied, Visit Tervuren has put together a whole overview with all the different hiking routes in and around Tervuren. Some of them also include Geocaching locations, providing visitors with yet another way of discovering the town in a fun and active way.

Royal Vegetable Garden Playground

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to get them interested in something else, children just want to run around with their friends at a (well-equipped) playground. For such cases, the playground located at the Royal Vegetable Garden in Tervuren could hardly be more perfect.

Located right in the centre of town yet adjacent to Tervuren Park, it is the ideal place for the youngest members of the family to blow off steam while climbing, jumping and running in all directions. Meanwhile, those who are less interested in such active pastimes can lounge around on the lawn or even settle on one of the nearby terraces.

Bluebells are a species of flowers that can be spotted at a myriad of places across Europe, but Belgium’s Hallerbos has become a public favourite over the years, mainly due to a successful social media campaign. Every year, some 60,000 to 80,000 people pay a visit to the Bluebell Festival to see the natural spectacle with their own eyes.

A fragile ecosystem worth protecting

However, that popularity comes at a price. Bluebells are delicate and can easily get damaged, especially if they’re trodden on. When damaged, the leaves have more difficulty photosynthesising, which can cause the plant to die back. As the flowers take many years to establish themselves, minor damage can have a long-lasting impact. Visitors are thus asked to look after the bluebells and to protect the yearly phenomenon by sticking to the official pathways.

On 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 April and 1 May 2026, a free shuttle bus will operate between Halle’s train station and Parking 2 at the Hallerbos. It will run every half hour from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturdays, and every 20 minutes on Sundays and on 1 May. Bicycle rental is available at Halle’s train station from Saturday, 11 April to Thursday, 1 May, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on weekdays, and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekends and public holidays. During weekends and public holidays, the bicycles are free to use while supplies last.

Walks for visitors

Plateau walk: Starting at Parking 4 (Dries 3 – 1500 Halle), this 4 km trail is designed for visitors with limited mobility and is marked with white and black poles. The path is suitable for wheelchairs and features regular benches and picnic tables.

Sequoia Walk: Beginning at Parking 2 or Parking 1a (Hogebermweg), this 5.3 km trail is marked with blue poles and leads visitors past the forest’s impressive giant Sequoia trees. 

Roebuck walk: Starting at Parking 5 (Kapittel 10, 1500 Halle), this adventurous 7 km trail is marked with yellow posts and takes hikers through three of the four valleys in the Hallerbos. 

Bluebell Walks: Two marked routes are available from 4 April 2026. One departs from Parking 1a (Hogebermweg) and is 4.8 km long, while the other starts from the Achtdreven and is 5.1 km long. Additionally, from Parking 1b (Houtveld), a 1.6 km walk is marked to the Achtdreven.

The Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests also encourages people to go and look for bluebells at other locations throughout Flanders, often less crowded but not necessarily less beautiful. 12 locations in particular are worth a visit.

In order to avoid the crowds, especially when visiting by car, visitors are advised to attend the 2026 Bluebell Festival on weekdays.

The Hallerbos has been designated as a nature reserve since 2021, highlighting its ecological importance. The Bluebell Festival is not just a scenic highlight; it also underscores the significance of conservation and responsible tourism. When visiting, one should thus behave accordingly.

The programme, which has been running for nearly a century since 1927, brings together “over 3,300 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands,” opening them to the public thanks to the participation of the garden owners.

The scheme supports nursing and health charities through the funds raised by admissions and sales of that most British refreshment, tea and cake. In 2025 alone, the NGS donated nearly £3.9 million (around €4.5 million) to worthy causes including the Carers’ Trust, Hospice UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Parkinson’s UK, and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

The NGS website and app allows lovers of the great outdoors to choose which gardens to visit, not only by location around the country, but by other criteria too. What type of garden are they? Are dogs permitted? Are refreshments available? Is there wheelchair access? Will there be plants for sale?

As well as giving access to beautiful, private spaces that are not usually possible to explore, the scheme also makes certain well-known gardens more affordable on selected dates. For example, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, will welcome visitors at less than a third of the usual entry price on 10 May 2026, with adult admission at £10 (around €11.5) instead of £31 (nearly €36). Tickets for children between the ages of three and 16 years, go less than half price too, at £7 (around €8.10) instead of £15 (over €17). The garden features the extraordinary Marlborough Maze, one of the world’s largest formal mazes, covering 1.8-acres and comprising more than 3,000 yew trees.

Consumer champion Which? also notes that Rydal Mount, the Lake District home of poets William and Dorothy Wordsworth, a sprawling cottage dating back to the 16th century, where purple wisteria cascade down white walls in the late spring, can also be visited on NGS open days for nearly half price. That’s £6.50 instead of £12.50 (around €7.50 instead of €14.50) on 30 and 31 March, 1 April, and 1, 2 and 3 June.

In Scotland, there is also a bespoke national garden scheme, and in the capital, the London Gardens Trust is offering its own open days on 6-7 June 2026. Members of the public will need to enter a ballot to win tickets for some of them, like the Battersea Roof Gardens— a massive, 300-metre-long, normally private roofscape, featuring 23,000 plants and a sunset bar atop a residential building designed by Foster + Partners, as part of the Battersea Power Station masterplan.

In addition to the scheme’s various pop-ups and special occasions, English Heritage will be hosting a series of events to support the NGS in some of the UK’s most spectacular country piles, including castles, priories, and stately homes, some of which were landscaped by famous names such as Capability Brown.

Day 1: Nakhchivan City

1. Heydar Aliyev Museum

You can begin your itinerary by exploring Nakhchivan City. First on your list should be visiting the Heydar Aliyev Museum, where you would be able to learn more about the life and activities of the former president of the country. Exhibits cover his life, from childhood to leadership, showcasing portraits and beautifully crafted carpets.

You can also look at documents from the period when he held leadership positions, including signed letters. Additionally, you can examine the service phone he used in his office alongside other stationery.

2. Momine Khatin Mausoleum

The second stop on your tour is the Momine Khatin Mausoleum, one of the oldest monuments in the East, built to honour a woman. Dating back over 800 years, it was constructed for Momine Khatin, the wife of Atabeg Shamseddin Eldeniz, the ruler of the Eldiguzid state. The tomb is an example of traditional Azerbaijani national architecture that has endured for centuries. It is also one of the most celebrated works by the world-renowned architect Ajami Nakhchivani. Rising 25 metres above the ground, the mausoleum features a circular interior and a decagonal exterior. Today, its original patterns continue to reflect the splendour and antiquity of Nakhchivan.

What’s more, Momine Khatin is one of Nakhchivan’s mausoleums included in the UNESCO Tentative List for their outstanding architectural ensemble, illustrating a significant stage in history.

3. Khan’s Palace

Within walking distance of the Momine Khatin Mausoleum is the Khan’s palace, one of the most iconic buildings in the region. Designed in the Eastern architectural style, it was commissioned by Kalbali Khan Kangarli, father of Nakhchivan’s then-khan.

For a short period, the structure served as a carpet museum, and since 2010, it has housed an exhibition dedicated to Azerbaijani history, adorned with richly ornamented stained-glass windows. Visitors can explore various items such as traditional attire, old furniture, and beautifully crafted kitchen utensils.

4. Nakhchivan Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex

From the Khan’s palace, head to Nakhchivan’s Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex, where you will also be able to visit a few more iconic landmarks. Built in the seventh century, the castle served as a defence fortification until the middle of the 17^th century. Currently a museum, it exhibits a variety of household items, including ceramics from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age, copper tools and weapons, as well as national costumes and carpets.

5. Noah’s tomb and Heydar Mosque

While in the area, it is worth visiting Noah’s tomb, where local legend holds that his remains were once kept. Moreover, the Nakhchivan Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex offers a stunning view of Heydar Mosque, whose vibrant colours and intricate floral motifs make its architecture truly captivating. If you have the chance, make sure to visit the mosque itself to admire its exquisite details up close.

6. Duzdag Salt Mountain

At the end of the day, stop by Duzdag Salt Mountain, currently transformed into a medical tourism facility. Established in the 1970s, the centre receives visitors from many countries, coming to treat their respiratory diseases. The therapy used there is called speleotherapy. It is a type of salt therapy that uses the natural climate and salty air of underground caves. Found in places like Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, these salt caves are a popular alternative treatment for people with asthma.

Day 2: Batabat and Seven Sleepers’ Cave

During the second day, it is worth leaving the city and experiencing some of the natural wonders of Nakhchivan. After you’ve had breakfast, you can head to the Ashabi Kahf Shrine Religious-Cultural Monument Complex, which is approximately 12 kilometres east of Nakhchivan City.

The complex is centred around the Ashabi Kahf, also known as the Seven Sleepers’ Cave. According to local legends, seven young people who believed in another god took refuge in this cave and slept for over 300 years. This refers to the Islamic ‘People of the Cave’ story from the Quran, also known in Christian tradition as the Seven Sleepers, making it a significant pilgrimage site for local Muslims. Today, the complex is a popular pilgrimage site for local Azerbaijanis who come to make wishes and pray.

The site is equipped with many tables where visitors can relax and enjoy a cup of tea before making the walk up to the cave. The complex also features an open-air mosque where believers can pray peacefully. The entire site, with its network of stairs, allows tourists to savour the beauty of the surrounding mountains and take the walk at their own pace.

From the Seven Sleepers’ Cave, you can take a one-hour drive to the Batabat region. Near the lush area is Bichanak village, which can be reached from Nakhchivan by bus. From the village, the lake area is easily accessible by taxi or even on foot. Rich in mineral water springs, the lakeside is a popular weekend picnic spot among local Nakhchivanis. Famous for a lake with a floating peat island, the spot is ideal for nature lovers as the landscape is covered with lush greenery and blossoming flowers.

Day 3: Alinja Castle and Orubad City

On your last day, it is important to visit Alinja Castle, one of the most iconic spots in Nakhchivan. The best time to do this is in the morning, as once you reach the top, there’s no real escape from the sun. Honestly, dedicating half a day is more than enough, as the place can be explored without a rush in a few hours. The climb to the top is usually the most difficult part and is highly likely to take the longest time. This also gives time to visitors to ponder how much harder the ascent would have been if there were no stairs.

Alinja is popular among locals but highly undiscovered by international tourists. When visiting, there is also the chance for you to be the only visitor there.

After visiting Alinja Castle, you can go to the city of Ordubad, which is the second biggest in the autonomous republic. You can have lunch there and visit different museums, including the house-museum of the academic Yusif Mammadaliyev, whose most famous works are related to the catalytic processing of fuel oil. He is also the founder of petrochemistry (a branch of chemistry focused on chemicals made from petroleum (oil) and natural gas).

Moreover, when visiting Ordubad, it is worth stopping at the Geysariyye Monument, a site that is now a historical and ethnographic museum, exhibiting various items related to the everyday life of people in the past. When there, you can see silkworks, old weapons, and iron tools that were hung on the doors of houses. One was dedicated to women and the other to men, allowing the house-owners to recognise easily whether they are visited by a man or a woman.

Practical tips:

Currency: The currency is the Azerbaijani manat, which is equal to €0,51.

Cash vs. card: Most restaurants and supermarkets accept card payments, but it’s wise to carry some cash in case the card machine fails. Cash is also handy for street vendors or small souvenirs.

Language: The local language is Azerbaijani. Having someone in your group who speaks Azerbaijani—whether a guide or a local friend—can transform your trip, making it easier to connect with locals, navigate daily life, and uncover experiences that might otherwise stay hidden.

Connectivity: Azerbaijan is outside the EU, so staying online means either getting a local prepaid SIM with data or using an international eSIM app like Airalo, handy for maps or translations.

The area was devastated economically just over a decade ago when the giant Ford car factory closed, resulting in the loss of more than 10,000 jobs. Limburg was forced to reinvent itself – and it has done so remarkably well, with its provincial capital, Hasselt, now showcasing the best of the region.

While the city once suffered the fallout of that crushing economic blow, this clean and pleasant destination has emerged as a flagship of entrepreneurial spirit and endeavour.

Guided tours

A good way to begin exploring and to hear about Hasselt’s impressive history is by joining a guided tour. Few do it better than local chemistry teacher Kristof Van Verde, whose knowledge of the city and its surroundings is second to none.

The 44-year-old first explains why, in his opinion, most visitors come to Hasselt and its environs: for a local historic abbey; for the European recognised regional product, Jenever (without which there would be no gin); and for the cycling. Even if you only come for one or two of these, Hasselt is worth the trip.

Back in the 14^th century, only around 500 people lived in Hasselt. Today, the population is around 80,000. Over the centuries, the Virga Jesse Basilica on Kapelstraat has remained the city’s most important place of worship. Here stands a statue that is paraded through the city every seven years as part of an ancient tradition linked to a miracle that took place here. The next parade is some years away, as the last one was held just last year.

Kristof skilfully recounts the history of this marvellous church, as well as the story behind the Genever Festival, held on the third weekend of October and attracting up to 30,000 people. Genever even has a museum of its own, where visitors can enjoy a tasting. Kristof also explains why the drinking still has to stop by 8 pm on festival days, and shares the fascinating background of the strong beers for which Belgium is so famous.

One of the most striking things about this compact city – its centre is just 800 metres across, almost entirely traffic-free, and easily explored on foot – is the clever and colourful street art. Hasselt boasts more than 100 graffiti and street art works by some of the best national and international artists. Look out for ROA’s giant owl across the water, and just a little further along, you’ll also find the world’s largest QR code.

Your guide will lead you through the different themes as you meander around the centre, whose beating heart is the Grote Markt, where daily life unfolds. Piet Stockmans’ Waterpad (The Water Path) adds an artistic touch to the square, and from here you can listen to the carillon.

Other central highlights include the fashion museum, housed in a century-old abbey and telling the story of Limburg’s once thriving textile industry, and the Japanese Garden. Spanning 2.5 hectares, it is said to be the largest of its kind in Europe, offering a leisurely stroll in a Zen-like setting.

Just outside town is Herkenrode Abbey, one of the three major local attractions Kristof recommends. Once the richest women’s convent in the Low Countries, today it is an “experience centre” set within 100 hectares of green landscape. The abbey was nearly transformed into a factory and stables, but thanks partly to the Flanders Heritage Foundation, it has been brought back to life. Two local artists are currently working to rebuild an on-site church that burned down many years ago. British visitors may be intrigued to learn that some of the abbey’s beautiful stained glass windows, once sold at auction to industrialists, now adorn Lichfield Cathedral near Birmingham.

Capital of good taste

For years, Hasselt has been known as the “capital of good taste”, a reputation based on its food and fashion.

A fine example of its culinary tradition is De Boulevard, which has recently refreshed its menu with a cinematic theme, offering dishes under headings such as “Classiques du Cinéma” and “Sunset Boulevard”. Open from breakfast until late (though the kitchen closes at 9.30 pm), it serves both hotel guests and visitors. The imaginative “Friends and Famous” menu features Belgian classics such as carpaccio, croquettes, carbonnades and steak tartare. Almost everything, including the soups, is homemade.

The restaurant’s Belgian head chef, Marc Du Pont, sous chef Eddy Sallaerts, and attentive staff, such as Pascal, ensure a warm welcome. Seating 120 indoors, it also boasts a terrace for up to 100 guests – perfect for an alfresco drink or aperitif.

Hasselt’s culinary excellence is widely recognised: local businesses won five of the eleven prizes at the Belgian Vegan Awards.

Where to stay

De Boulevard sits on the ground floor of the Holiday Inn, an ideal base in the city centre with the added convenience of a large underground car park. Its general manager, Patrik Roosenboom, also oversees the nearby 89-room Holiday Inn Express.

Having arrived a couple of years ago, Patrik brings a wealth of hospitality experience, while many of the staff have been at the hotel much longer – always a positive sign in the fast-changing horeca industry. He explains how Hasselt was forced to evolve after the Ford factory closure and how the local economy has diversified, attracting a mix of businesses.

The hotel, with its 108 rooms and five meeting spaces, benefits from corporate trade during the week, while at weekends tourists and leisure visitors fill most of the rooms. Travel time from Brussels Airport can be comparable to that from the airport to central Brussels itself – another reason Hasselt is increasingly popular.

Patrik describes the hotel’s “vibe” as calm and relaxed, reflecting Hasselt’s agreeable pace of life. It is also exceptionally pet-friendly: if you arrive with a dog, staff will immediately offer water and a biscuit. Families are also well catered for, with tastefully decorated connecting rooms.

Opened 35 years ago as Hasselt’s first internationally branded hotel, the Holiday Inn remains a benchmark of quality, with customer satisfaction ratings for cleanliness exceeding 90%. Patrik, who celebrates 20 years in the hospitality industry this October, continues to raise standards.

Café culture

Before leaving Hasselt, make time for Marlo’s, a small café that opened seven years ago and has become one of the city’s trendiest spots. The café serves global dishes, from Mexican to Asian, as well as an “all-day breakfast” menu – even in the middle of the afternoon. (It closes at 5 pm on weekdays and 7 pm on Saturdays.)

HasPas

One of the best ways to experience Hasselt is through the HasPas, a discount card that offers access to local hotspots, trendy shops and coffee bars. It also provides reduced price admission to numerous museums, including the Jenever Museum, Fashion Museum, Japanese Garden and Herkenrode Abbey. Available from Visit Hasselt, it can also be combined with bike rental, making it easy to explore Kristof’s third “must do” – cycling.

Hasselt is the perfect base from which to discover the wider Limburg region. Visit Hasselt has even developed four new cycling routes connecting the city to attractions such as Alden Biesen and C-Mine in Genk.

Soon the city will once again draw young visitors from across Belgium and beyond, as the annual four-day Pukkelpop festival returns, featuring international headliners and rising stars alike.

2. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Morning – Day 2)

No visit to the UAE is complete without seeing the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. An architectural marvel, the mosque attracts visitors from across the world, willing to tap into a different culture and explore the richness of Emirati culture. The first considerations to build the Mosque began in the late 1980s, and construction began on November 5th, 1996.  The mosque opened for worship on Eid Al Adha 2007. Its design and construction ‘unite the world,’ using materials and help from artisans from various countries, including Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Greece. Interestingly, more than 3,000 workers and 38 contraction companies participated in the Mosque construction.

3. Yas Mall (Lunch – Day 2)

4. Qasr al Watan tour (Day 2)

The Palace of the Nation – Qasr Al Watan is a place that may look ancient to some. Yet, the palace is only 8 years old. Being finished in 2017, this remarkable building is the place where important government events and ceremonies take place. However, the palace has been open to the public only since 2018. Divided into different sections, the interior is adorned with beautiful details in blue, white, and yellow, each colour signifying different things. Blue in this context represents the sea, white is related to peace, while yellow is associated with the desert sand. There are over 5,000 unique designs inspired by nature, most of which are influenced by Islamic art that focuses exclusively on flowers, with no representation of humans or animals.

One of the most impressive things about the Qasr Al Watan is the chandelier in The Spirit of Collaboration room. Crafted from 350,000 dazzling pieces of crystal and weighing 12 tons, this chandelier is so large that a person can actually fit inside to clean it. To facilitate maintenance, inside the chandelier a staircase has been designed, which makes moving around easier. 

5. Edition hotel: Library Bar + dinner at Oak Room or Alba Terrace (Day 2)

If interested in exploring mixology and fine dining, the Edition Hotel is an excellent option. It offers a range of experiences which include the Library Bar is a speakeasy place, inspired by the written word. Award-winning mixologist Ryan Remulta serves drinks while guests enjoy the quiet, intimate space away from the city crowds.

Moreover, those who are rather peckish or ultimately starving can indulge in the Mediterranean restaurant Alba Terrace. Another option at the same location, at Edition Hotel, is the Oak Room, a British steakhouse with a rock ‘n’ roll touch, offering “prime grade” meat cuts led by Meat Sommelier Alejandro de la Fuente.

6. Breakfast at CAF Cafe, Corniche Beach and check-out (Morning – Day 3)

Starting the last day slowly at CAF café near Corniche beach is another way to relax. This café is the perfect spot for breakfast or brunch, offering a wide selection of food and drinks. Afterwards, taking a stroll along the Corniche beach is a must-do. This beautiful beach isn’t just home to turquoise water and soft, white sand, it also has a beautiful seaside boardwalk with lush gardens and benches overlooking the picturesque Arabian Gulf. Of course, if the time allows everyone willing to go for a dip, can indulge themselves in a swim in the crystal-clear water. The beach is certified as disability-friendly and has earned Blue Flag and Green Flag recognition for its quality and environmental standards.

If time allows, the heritage village is something definitely interesting to explore and experience. The site offers a peak at Abu Dhabi’s past, where visitors can shop, discover artefacts and watch artisans working.

Each year, thousands of tourists thus travel to the Belgian forest to marvel at the natural phenomenon with their own eyes.

A fragile ecosystem worth protecting

However, bluebells are delicate and easily damaged. Stepping on the plants is prohibited, as doing so can cause them to die back. Since they take many years to establish, even minor damage can have a lasting impact on the forest’s appearance. For this reason, picking the flowers is also not permitted. Sticking to the official paths is mandatory to preserve the forest’s unique ecosystem for future generations.​

In order to successfully manage those crowds, the city of Halle and the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests have gathered their forces. While the Hallerbos can be reached by car they are urging visitors to come on foot, by bike or by public transport as to limit traffic around the forest.

On 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 April and 1 May, a free shuttle bus will operate between Halle’s train station and Parking 2 at the Hallerbos. It will run every half hour from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturdays, and every 20 minutes on Sundays and on 1 May. Bicycle rental is available at Halle’s train station from Saturday 12 April to Thursday 1 May, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on weekdays, and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekends and public holidays. During weekends and public holidays, the bicycles are free to use while supplies last.​

Walks for Visitors

The Hallerbos offers several marked walking trails that allow visitors to fully experience the beauty of the forest:​

Plateau Walk: Starting at Parking 4 (Dries 3 – 1500 Halle), this 4 km trail is designed for visitors with limited mobility and is marked with white and black poles. The path is suitable for wheelchairs and features regular benches and picnic tables.

Sequoia Walk: Beginning at the car park between the bridge over the R0 and the “Achtdreven,” this 4 km trail is marked with blue poles and leads visitors past the forest’s impressive giant Sequoia trees. ​

Roebuck Walk: Starting at the hunting lodge, this adventurous 7 km trail is marked with yellow posts and takes hikers through three of the four valleys in the Hallerbos. ​

During the Bluebell Festival, additional temporary walks are marked to showcase the bluebells:​

Bluebell Walks: Two marked routes are available from 13 April. One departs from Parking 1 (Hogebermweg) and is 4.8 km long, while the other starts from the Achtdreven and is 5.1 km. Additionally, from Parking 11 (Houtveld), a 1.6 km walk is marked to the Achtdreven. ​

Alternative locations to spot bluebells

The Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests also encourages people to go and look for bluebells at other locations throughout Flanders, often less-crowded but not necessarily less beautiful. 12 locations in particular are worth a visit.

Atmosphere during Ramadan

The ambience in Abu Dhabi transforms during Ramadan. While people observe fasting, life’s pace slows down and work hours are often reduced even for non-Muslims. The streets are noticeably quieter during the day, while mosques are often full of believers engaged in prayer and reflection. The strong sense of togetherness makes it a meaningful time not only for locals but also for visitors.

Despite the slower daytime rhythm, malls, tourist attractions, and restaurants remain open to visitors. However, it is highly advisable to check for adjustments in operating hours, as schedules may vary.

Additionally, Ramadan brings an array of special offers and discounts across malls and souks (bazaars), making it an ideal time for shopping. For those interested in a more traditional experience, Ramadan markets and heritage villages offer handcrafted goods, perfumes, and traditional garments from local artisans.

In contrast, Abu Dhabi comes alive at night. After the fast is broken, people gather to dine, socialise, and enjoy vibrant locations like Corniche Beach and Yas Marina. The Ramadan spirit is reflected in the illuminated streets and festive gatherings that continue late into the night.

Fasting and etiquette for non-Muslims

While eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is discouraged out of respect for those fasting, non-Muslims can still find indoor venues to enjoy meals and refreshments. It is also recommended to avoid any form of aggressive behaviour, as swearing and similar actions are considered especially offensive during this period.

Respecting local customs is essentials. Dressing modestly is encouraged although the atmosphere is more relaxed around tourist-heavy areas and malls where people tend to be a bit more laid-back. Even though large parties are less common during Ramadan, the city remains welcoming while ensuring a comfortable and memorable experience for travellers.

Experiencing iftar and suhoor

One of the most interesting experiences during Ramadan is experiencing iftar and suhoor. Iftar is the first meal that breaks the fast at sunset. Tourists can join an Iftar meal at mosques, hotels, or local homes. Many places offer buffet-style iftars with traditional Emirati and Middle Eastern dishes like dates, seafood, lamb, salads, knafeh, coffee, and many more.

Traditionally, fasting individuals break their fast with dates and water to rehydrate and prepare their bodies for the meal. After this, they can enjoy a wide variety of starters and main dishes.
