2. The Houwaartseberg Walk

Houwaart church is where your climb up the Houwaartseberg starts. The ‘mountain’ is crowded with vineyards soaking up the sun. What does crowded mean? De Houwaartse Vineyard, Den Eeckhout Vineyard, Het Eiken Vat Vineyard, Steenkuyl-Wijnfaktorij Vineyard, Hagelander Vineyard, Sint-Denijs Vineyard, and Ten Gaerde Vineyard are all there…but we may have missed a few. The walk is 9.2 km long.

2.2. Highlights

Clamber onto the Wijnbank for a majestic view of the sprawling vineyard tapestry below. A few kilometres further along your walk, you’ll spot the keep of Horst Castle peeking through the trees. This cross-shaped keep has stalwartly kept watch over Wingebeek Valley since the 15^th century.

2.3. Your stay

3. The From Hill to Hill Walk

A 10.7-km journey takes you over the Houwaartse Berg and through the beautiful Walen Forest. Artisan pride has been passed down from father to daughter at Liemau Vineyard, and Danouise Vineyard has been a reference since 1994.

Enjoy a bit of forest bathing in the Walen Forest, a marshland treasure scattered with peat mosses and orchids. Just don’t forget your wellies!

This walk (7 km) takes you through the dreamy sunken roads of the Chartreuzen Forest and up the slopes of the Chartreuzenberg. These slopes nourish the ripening grapes of the Chartreuzenberg Vineyard, which is 60 acres large with 1,200 vines.

4.2. Highlights

A huge sun gate welcomes you to the natural oasis Chartreu-ZEN Forest, where you can leave your worries behind. There’s a yoga platform and a labyrinth with large chunks of ironstone for walls… There’s even a wooden bed with a pillow and all.

4.3. Your stay

Fun, hands-on kits, an extendible table, and astonishing stories! The Hageland Holiday Home farmhouse is family and kid friendly.

5. The Speelberg Walk

Alongside hits and fresh releases that engaged the audience, there were virtual reality concerts, art shows, light installations, and comfortable facilities that enhanced the overall experience.

Frederik Luijten, the festival’s spokesperson, proudly proclaimed in an interview with VRT that this year’s Pukkelpop edition was the best one since the festival’s inception in 1985. The festival truly outdid itself, creating an unforgettable experience.

1. Celebrating diversity

The diversity of musical genres is what sets Pukkelpop apart from other festivals. Unlike Tomorrowland, which primarily focuses on electronic music, and Rock Werchter, which leans towards rock, Pukkelpop stands out by offering a mix of styles. The festival was created for music enthusiasts who appreciate a wide variety of genres, including indie, techno, hip-hop, punk, jazz, pop, rapping, funk and R&B.

Each performer had a distinct impact on the crowd. Take Yungblud made the audience buzz, even before stepping onto the stage. The video opening the concert showed him backstage, full of energy, jumping, screaming, and blowing kisses to the camera. As he sang the hits “Parents” and “The Funeral” and strummed guitar, he surprised everyone by asking for a spot right in the middle of the field. The concert had the crowd standing shoulder to shoulder, but after his request, the show transformed into a lively moshing spectacle. “Turn to someone you’ve never met and give ’em a big hello, mazafaka!” he encouraged, continuing, “Tell them “I absolutely love you, mate…” I love all of you!” He sparked euphoria among the audience at the end of his concert on the festival’s main stage.

Angolan-Portuguese singer Pongo offered a just as interactive show. She invited fans on stage and twerked with them while singing “Wegue Wegue”. The singer performed part of the concert with a young girl in a similar outfit so the show reminded me of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. The audience was enthusiastic and “Funk motifs” made everyone groove to the beat.

A techno party led by popular DJs like Reinier Zonneveld, Chase & Status, Joyhauser, and Amelie Lens was made even more electrifying with a light show that had the crowd completely mesmerised. The Boiler stage, custom-built for electronic music parties, was set up in a spacious hall with two tents on the sides. The space in between was illuminated by striking beams of light. The techno tunes played were so diverse and catchy that even someone like me, who isn’t particularly into this type of music, found it irresistible and danced for half the night.

The rock band Nothing but Thieves created such excitement with their performance that the crowd spilled beyond the venue, and many people who couldn’t fit inside the tent watched them on a screen sitting on the grass. Even though the band is very popular in Belgium (they played five concerts here last year and even performed on the main stage at Pukkelpop 2022), this time they were slotted for the smaller tent. The group, however, didn’t seem bothered by it. Before singing their hit “Amsterdam”, lead vocalist Conor Mason mentioned that Pukkelpop is his favourite music festival.

Years & Years captured the audience’s attention with a mix of grand piano playing and energetic dancing, even on the grand piano itself. Lead singer Olly Alexander’s talent was evident in how effortlessly he pumped up the crowd with the songs “Desire” and “King,” which are perfect for a summer festival atmosphere. This combined with the dancers’ black leather outfits and daring moves made the band’s concert hypnotising.

2. Headliners’ messages

“You’ve made it my favourite festival of all time” declared singer Anne-Marie. She sang her hit “FRIENDS” as she made her way down to the crowd, and the audience couldn’t help but squeal in delight, trying to touch the pop music star. “I want to remind us that being a beautiful person has nothing to do with what we look like. It is about who you are inside,” announced the singer before performing the song “Perfect to Me”, while “I love you”s were constantly shouted from the crowd. This isn’t surprising, given the singer’s messages about unhealthy relationships, body positivity, the friendzone, and self-love.

Anne-Marie wasn’t the only singer who paid attention to connecting with the audience. Billie Eilish performed ‘Bossa Nova,’ proudly waving an LGBTQ+ flag that was thrown on stage. She treated everyone to a few gentle acoustic songs, singing alongside her brother and best friend Finneas, silencing the rowdy audience. During her performance, the words “No music on a dead planet” appeared on the screen. Billie Eilish used her time on stage to talk about environmental issues. In the background, there was an animated display urging everyone to protect nature, getting a positive reaction from the crowd that screamed and clapped in support.

3. Beyond music

Music was not the only source of inspiration at the festival. A glowing Sky Wheel illuminated the night and allowed visitors to grasp the enormity of the event. From up there, they could see the impressive site hosting 66,000 music lovers.

The evening came alive with colourful balloons, aqua makeup, interactive games, and bright light installations. Stilt-walking girls in luminous dresses added a magical touch. Spectators admired the event every minute as Boulevard Bizar presented a non-stop array of contests, performances, and games.

The food court, “Food Wood”, had something to suit everyone’s taste: Korean chicken, Indian wraps, Mexican tacos, and pizzas are just a few of the many options. Around the food court and seating areas, people were tightly packed on benches, hammocks, and grass, but it didn’t seem to stop anyone from enjoying the festival vibe.

Pukkelpop 2023 had it all: a basketball court, a skateboarding area, and even an e-rena where they hosted a virtual reality concert for the very first time in the festival’s history. 17-year-old performer ISE took the spotlight as the first headliner on the virtual stage.

Pukkelpop went the extra mile to provide facilities for people with disabilities, making the festival more inclusive. Another noticeable change in the 2023 edition was the increased focus on feminism. Around 40% of the headliners were women, marking a positive shift from earlier years when men largely dominated the lineup. Pukkelpop reflects society by responding to its demands and trends. At the same time, the festival also has the power to influence mass culture by promoting social movements like gender equality.

The cabin crew union of the Portuguese branch of easyJet has scheduled a strike from April 1 to 3, calling for wage hikes and better working conditions. The strikes at both airlines have the potential to cause significant disruptions to air travel in Portugal, with passengers advised to stay informed about the latest updates from their airlines regarding flight schedules.

1. Strike causes

The reason for the strike is due to the government’s failure to commit to the agreement between TAP and SPAC regarding the reinstatement of labour conditions. The departure of TAP’s current CEO at the end of March and the arrival of the new CEO, Luís Rodrigues, after mid-April has further complicated the issue.

SPAC stated that until the government ratifies the proposal, the strike will continue. The union has insisted that the government must still approve the proposal agreed upon between TAP and SPAC. In a statement titled ‘Strike in April if the government does not ratify agreement’, the union explained that the pilots approved TAP’s proposal to revise their working conditions that were imposed by the Temporary Emergency Agreement at the General Company Meeting. The meeting was called to discuss the protocol proposed by TAP following negotiations with the union.

2. Protocol issues

The pilots are anxious that the company may backtrack on the agreement, which covers two main issues, the first being the collective dismissal of pilots who were let go during the pandemic but were later rehired. These pilots remain subject to collective dismissal. The second issue concerns the protection of the rights of young pilots in the company. Due to the halt of their career progression in recent years, their salaries would be on par with newly hired pilots and SPAC aims to prevent this from happening.

SPAC and TAP have negotiated a protocol that encompasses several significant matters, with the goal of addressing crucial issues in the aviation industry. One of the essential issues that the protocol covers is the integration of redundant pilots, with the aim of attracting and retaining talented pilots. Additionally, the agreement provides for the payment of pilot officers who have cruise command duties and includes provisions for a day of assistance service at the airport and simulators, which are essential aspects of the aviation industry.

The protocol addresses several other key issues that have a significant impact on the pilots’ welfare. For instance, the agreement provides for the same measures that have been recently implemented for other professional classes. It also includes a new table of allowances that can be modified to the previous model if it proves to be more advantageous. Moreover, the protocol provides for compensation in April and May for the complementary allowance and annual adjustment items, retroactive to March, if the negotiations on the new company agreement are concluded by May.

1. Sustainable travel

The fully electric, emission-free system will be one of the greenest forms of transportation in the U.S. With an annual reduction of 3 million cars and 400,000 tons of CO2, it is set to make a significant impact on the environment. This project is also unique as it will be the first high-speed rail system operated and maintained by workers from the various rail unions.

2. Labour market

Brightline recently announced that it had reached a $10 billion agreement with a collective of various rail worker unions, including the High-Speed Rail Labor Coalition. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the 13 unions representing more than 160,000 workers in the freight, regional, commuter, and passenger railroad sectors.

The project is expected to create nearly 35,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 10,000 permanent jobs, providing a boost to the economy.

3. Preliminary plans

Brightline is currently the only private provider of modern, eco-friendly, intercity passenger rail service in America, serving Florida’s Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach, with its Orlando station beginning service in 2023.

The company expects to break ground for the Las Vegas – Los Angeles project this year and estimates that all necessary work will be completed in the next four years. Recent insights presented by ETC and Tourism Economics indicate that European travel recovery began in earnest in 2022, with international arrivals reaching almost 80% of 2019 levels for the year on average. Long-haul travel, however, has been a weak point in the post-pandemic rebound, with short- and medium-haul arrivals outpacing long-haul visitors. According to David Goodger, Director of Tourism Economics, a complete recovery in European travel and its associated economic benefits is dependent on the return of long-haul travel demand, as intra-regional demand faces challenges due to economic slowdown.

Prior to Covid-19, long-haul visitors accounted for 25% of the international nights spent in Europe, staying for longer periods and traveling to multiple destinations, resulting in higher economic gains. Although the share of arrivals from overseas markets is lower, the proportion of nights and spend exceeds that of other markets due to longer trips and higher budgets.

2023 will be a turning point for international tourism recovery, and this is the ideal moment to re-establish Europe as the top global travel destination.

The organizations forecast that international travel to Europe will recover pre-pandemic levels in 2025, but the return of long-haul travel is necessary for complete recovery and continued growth of the tourism sector in Europe.

Specific markets perspectives

The latest figures show that the recovery of long-haul markets to Europe is progressing at a steady pace. The US, Europe’s largest long-haul market, is leading the way in recovery, with travel from the US to Europe expected to regain over 80% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023 and a full rebound in 2024, supported by the strength of the US dollar. While Western and Northern European destinations are expected to see a stronger recovery, travel to Eastern Europe remains weak due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Following the long-awaited reopening, a gradual recovery is likely from China, with forward data on bookings showing that Chinese travelers still prefer domestic travel. In 2023, travel from China to European destinations is projected to remain 60%-70% lower than pre-pandemic levels, with a full recovery expected in 2026. To improve the current situation “visas must be simplified and issued promptly, testing requirements (particularly when medically unnecessary) should be eased,” stated Tom Jenkins, CEO of ETOA.

The arrival of the Chinese visitors transformed some destinations in Europe. Their absence since 2019 has been sorely missed. Every effort must be made to make these visitors welcome.

Other markets such as India and Brazil are also showing a gradual recovery, with travel to Europe expected to regain pre-pandemic levels during 2025. As the recovery of long-haul markets to Europe continues, tourism stakeholders remain optimistic about the sector’s prospects in the future.

1. Arab Tourism Capital 2023

The evaluation of cities was conducted based on a set of criteria which included tourism management, infrastructure and resources, safety and security, diversity of tourism activities, as well as preservation and protection of the environment.

Qatar’s strategic investments are aiming to achieve the country’s goal of welcoming six million visitors annually by 2030. Qatar is going to organise and host internationally renowned events, invest in hospitality offerings and expand into more specialised areas of tourism.

2. Commemoration ceremony

Doha was declared as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2023 by the Arab Tourism Organization during its 25th session held at the Arab League General Secretariat Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. The session was chaired by Nayef Fayez, the Jordanian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. Prominent leaders including tourism ministers, ambassadors, and Visit Qatar’s brand ambassadors Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mutaz Barsham from nations represented by the Arab Tourism Organization were in attendance.

One of the industry’s most prestigious accolades is a testament of our exceptional achievements in leisure and hospitality.

“I am proud of our city’s tireless efforts that have culminated in this honourable recognition and look forward to further cementing Doha’s position as one of the world’s most sought-after leisure destinations”, said Akbar Al Baker, Chairman of Qatar Tourism.

Apart from the official ceremony, the event included a fireworks show, performances by the first female Qatari contemporary composer Dana Alfardan, as well as a national Qatari public performance with swords and rifles, called Arda.

1. Formula 1’s official airline

Qatar will host a Grand Prix for the next ten years, starting with the race in October, which will now be known as the Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix. The airline will be the title sponsor of The Qatar Airways Emilia Romagna Grand Prix (19-21 May), the Qatar Airways Hungarian Grand Prix (21-23 July), and the Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix (6-8 October).

Qatar Airways will now add Formula 1 to its extensive list of global sports sponsorships, which already includes FIFA World Cup, and the Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain football clubs. “We strongly believe that this partnership will place Qatar at the forefront of the motorsport ecosystem through hosting such prestigious events, in addition to positioning the country as a global hub for sports and entertainment tourism”, said Abdulrahman bin Abdullatif Al-Mannai, Qatar Motor & Motorcycle Federation’s (QMMF) President. According to him, the partnership will contribute to the society’s development and ‘will pave the way for tremendous business and investment opportunities’.

2. Celebration

To mark the introduction of this alliance and to increase public knowledge of all the motorsport events taking place in Qatar this year, Qatar Airways organised an evening for the general public along Doha’s famous Lusail Boulevard. The official cooperation was launched by the Minister of Sports and Youth Salah bin Ghanim Al Ali, QMMF President Abdulrahman Al-Mannai, Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali, and MotoGP CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.

Qatari rally champion Nasser Al-Attiyah, former Red Bull Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, KTM MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa, stunt rider Mike Jensen were special guests at the event. Akon, the top-selling R&B artist, gave a performance for the audience.

On November 17–19, the Qatar MotoGP will take place at the Lusail International Circuit in addition to the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2023. The Geneva International Motor Show Qatar in October 2023 and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) World Endurance Championship in 2024 are two additional motorsport events that will take place in Qatar.

Since the beginning of his legislative term, State Secretary Mathieu Michel, who is responsible for the Buildings Agency, has made it his goal to completely liberate the Palace of Justice from its metal confinement by 2030. This milestone will coincide with Belgium’s celebration of its 200th anniversary as an independent nation.

The Palace of Justice is an emblematic building of our capital and of our country. It is a symbol of Justice and therefore of democracy.

The Palace is a significant landmark of the Brussels skyline and holds the distinction of being the largest courthouse in the world. For an entire generation of Belgians, however, it has only been known as a prisoner of its “steel cage” of scaffolding, which has been there since the mid-1980s. As a preventive measure to contain any potential loose stones, new scaffolding was installed around the main facade of the Palace of Justice in the early 2000s. Despite this, the main entrance to the building continued to function.

The initial stage of the renovation process will involve the complete restoration of the facade on the side of Place Poelaert in 2024. At that point, the public will be able to witness the fully restored facade in all its glory, without the obstruction of scaffolding.

The rebirth of the Brussels Palais de Justice should be a strong signal that we respect and value our heritage and our history.

The first stage of the restoration project started in March 2021 with the reinforcement of scaffolding on the main facade to facilitate the restoration study and actual restoration work on the facade.

The Buildings Agency published the specifications for the restoration of the facade on the side of Place Poelaert. The agency is currently seeking an environmental permit from the relevant authorities.
