The regulation is not intended to force people to undress but to allow nudists to feel at ease without judgment from clothed tourists. Additionally, visitors must adhere to specific etiquette on nudist beaches, which includes refraining from taking photos, avoiding prolonged staring, not making unsolicited comments, and maintaining a respectful distance from others.

The nudist movement is slowly fading away, despite its popularity in Germany. “The number of people practicing it today is decreasing. Therefore, we have reduced the number of nudists beaches from 37 to 27 blocks with the new regulation,” Naumann explained to CNN.

Rostock boasts 15 km of coastline, with designated sections for nudist-only, mixed, and clothing-only areas, ensuring that all visitors’ preferences are accommodated.

Even though there are fewer opportunities to visit a nudist beach in Germany, those who are still interested can find dedicated spaces to fully embrace the nudists lifestyle.

Even though Luigi Tedeschi, the mayor of San Vero Milis and a self-declared anti-fascist, got the idea from the German couple, according to him, his willingness to allow naturalist weddings on the beach goes much further than just a couple of nude wedding goers. “I think we’re living in a delicate moment for people’s freedom, with the nationalist movements in Europe. People protest and get rounded up by the police, or they’re intimidated. So I think we need to do things to show that people are free. Most people want freedom, not a regime”, Tedeschi told CNN.

Tedeschi also explained the central part of the Is Benas beach has always been attracting a naturalist crowd but he officialised the matter a couple of years back to allow for anyone going there to feel safe and welcome. “Nudity has nothing to do with sex. For [naturists] it’s a philosophy of life, and is linked to nature”, he said. “It should be respected – so why not? We have this beach, a place that lends itself brilliantly to naturism. And then we thought, let’s make a beach for weddings. If people want to marry nude, they can.”

Because of the location of the beach, which is partly hidden by vast dunes and a pine forest, any passerby can easily look the other way if they don’t want to be confronted with any nudity. Therefore, no complaints have been issued within San Vero Milis, a town counting 2,500 inhabitants and up to 30,000 during the summer months.

The mayor is part of those who want to create a naturalist beach network throughout Sardinia as a way to develop a more sustainable and unique kind of tourism. “We have to have a cultural exchange – not big hotels, but small accommodation offerings that tell the story of the area. That can only happen if I greet the tourist in my home, feed them something I made – and this kind of tourism [naturism] is perfect for that. They are more in touch with nature”, Tedeschi added.

Morover, according to Tedeschi, contrary to “normal” beaches which are often scattered with trash, the naturalist beaches are always in pristine condition.

In the aftermath, the Namibian authorities reacted to the tourists’ behavior and announced their intention to take legal action against them. The suspects have not been publicly identified and were believed to have left the country before local authorities could take any action, as reported by UK news outlet The Independent.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Tourism told local media that the tourists risked being banned from entering the country’s national parks.

According to local media, the vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Association, Kenneth Nependa, labelled the incident “disgusting” adding that tourists think “they can do whatever they want” in Namibia.

“We have tourists writing graffiti on the Bushman rock art in Spitzkoppe,” said Nependa to The Independent. “Tourists hanging on the trees in Deadvlei, and now naked tourists climbing Big Daddy, which is a very famous dune for families and other tourists and locals. The ministry should really speak up and warn tourists that if this were to happen, the law will take its course.”

“It is a punishable act, according to the country’s laws. When this had been brought to our attention, we were shocked at the extent to which people could go,” Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism told local news outlet The Nambian. “We condemn this type of action as it does not only go against our morals but also violates the country’s laws.” The unnamed foreigners might be blacklisted from entering any of Namibia’s parks, Muyunda added.

Big Daddy is a dune of more than 320 meters of height. Located in the Sossusvlei area, it takes two hours to reach the top on foot. Sossusvlei is a dry lake on the central coast of Namibia, on the African continent. It is surrounded by gigantic dunes of intense reddish color that can reach more than 300 meters high. It is part of Namib-Naukluft, the fourth largest national park in the world.

From Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, the drive to Sossusvlei is five hours by road. The term “Sossusvlei” means “dead-end swamp”; it comes from the Nama and Afrikaans languages. It is so called because the sand mountains represent a natural barrier to the flow of the Tsauchab River, leaving the area completely dry. On rare occasions, when a branch of the river reaches the grounds of Sossusvlei, a small lake of turquoise color is formed.

1. Long-standing tradition shrivelling up 

The north-eastern Spanish region has a long-standing tradition of nudism on the beach. Spain has no anti-nudism laws and you can strip off anywhere, but there are particular beaches that are strongly associated with the pure pleasure of being naked by the sea. They have developed as nudist beaches because naturists head there instead of elsewhere “so as not to bother people”, lifelong nudist Segimon Rovira told The Guardian. Ironically, it is now the nudists who are being bothered. 

The Catalan Naturism Club says member numbers are shrivelling up due to ignorant beachgoers who do not realise they are visiting a traditionally nudist beach, and/or do not wish to disrobe. Many nudists feel self-conscious when others around them prefer to keep their clothes on. They say the fact that others stay covered up is disrespectful. And remaining clothed is only the smallest part of the problem. 

2. Anti-social influx 

The newcomers’ attitude towards naturism is the real issue. The nudists increasingly find themselves being laughed at, “stared at or harassed”, says Rovira, with, he says, women being the most frequent target of anti-social behaviour. 

Many nudist beaches are experiencing a huge influx of tourists, who seem to be following online-influencer content, discovering hidden coves and little-known paradises. They ignore signs signalling the beach etiquette and then act as if it is the nudists who are behaving strangely. 

Even the seemingly innocent activity of taking pictures of idyllic surroundings and filming the beach is having a chilling effect on nudists, who do not wish to find images of themselves in the nude posted all over the internet.  

Under these conditions, those who want to try out nudity are unlikely to do so, and even experienced nudists are being put off.

3. The battle of the birthday suit 

In response, the battle of the birthday suit has begun. The Naturist-Nudist Federation of Catalonia has asked the Catalan government to meet them to discuss “the discrimination that nudists face on the beaches of Catalonia.” 

In addition, a campaign aimed at upholding the naturist status of some beaches is underway. A good-humoured promotional video shows a couple loaded down with paraphernalia struggling all the way to a secret cove, only for their jaws to drop when they find it is thick with carefree nudists. The pair’s initial shock and staring give way to unadulterated fun when they too decide to get their kit off. 

“We have many such paradises in our region,” says the caption. “Let’s look after them, by keeping them clothes-free and prejudice-free.”

“A foreign subject who stripped naked to then take pictures in the archaeological remains of Machu Picchu in Cuzco, was intervened by Police Tourism personnel,” announced the National Police of Peru (PNP) on its Twitter account. According to the authorities, a 26-year-old Swiss citizen was involved in the alleged commission of the crime against freedom, offenses against public decency and obscene exhibition.

The director of Culture of Cuzco, Maritza Rosa Candia, confirmed that the watchmen of the most important tourist spot of the country, realized that there was a naked tourist near the known as House of the Guardian, in the high part of the Inca citadel.

“Today there were two tourists of foreign nationality who were without clothes and that is not allowed in the Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu,” said Candia. “The visitors’ regulations clearly prohibit this type of act. Our personnel immediately acted and notified the police that they had to get dressed and leave the sanctuary.”

He said that in the presence of the police officers the photographs recorded by the visitors were removed, and then they were taken to the police station to continue the proceedings, because they were denounced for acts against modesty and good manners.

Gilles Metroz, 26 years old, with Swiss passport, was the one who posed without clothes, and the Frenchman Lucas Yves Marc Deveque, 23 years old, was the one who took the photographs. Candia also called on visitors to comply with the provisions of the visitor’s regulations and the recommendations provided by the Machu Picchu security personnel.

In recent time there’s been some debate surrounding the name of the historical site. In an article entitled ‘The Ancient Inca Town Named Huayna Picchu’, published in Ñawpa Pacha, the Journal of the Institute of Andean Studies, authors Donato Amado Gonzales, historian at the Ministry of Culture in Peru, and Brian S. Bauer, professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, reveal the true name of the architectural site to be Huayna Picchu.

Built around 1420, the city is believed to have served as an estate for royal Incas living in Cuzco, the capital of the Incan empire, but it was abandoned when the Spanish invaded the area. It was then lost in the Andes mountains only to be found again by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Bingham was guided through the mountains by a local farmer Melchor Arteaga and sources from that time show that he was not sure what to call the city, but decided to settle on Machu Picchu based on a suggestion by his guide.

Emily Dean, professor of anthropology at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, clarified that in the Indigenous Quechua language, Picchu means “mountain peak”, while Machu means old and Huayna on the other hand means new or young. The fact that Bingham’s guide called the city Machu shows that locals had already known about the site long before the American explorer “discovered” it. Dean says that the mistake is not surprising, since non-Peruvian archaeologists did not fully understand Quechua and did not put much effort into researching the names of places.

To uncover the true name of the city, researchers Gonzales and Bauer first analyzed Bingham’s notes from the time he found the ruins. Page 47 from his field journal, dated 25 June 1911, the day after his first visit to Machu Picchu, shows Bingham asked Melchor Arteaga how to write the name of the site and the answer by Arteaga “Macho Pischo”.

The authors mentioned that despite their discovery of the original name, they “would not suggest that the name be changed since Machu Picchu is known worldwide”. Dean also said that the name of Machu Picchu is already published in thousands of books, articles, advertisements and legal documents and “the Peruvian people and their government have embraced the new name, so while it’s an interesting addition to the history of the site, it won’t change the modern name”.

Yet on May 6^th, you may get to see more than you’ve bargained for when you stepped outside. Because on that day, gardeners everywhere are getting to celebrate World Naked Gardening Day. In all honesty, we had never heard about it until recently and now that we know about the festivity, we’re not totally sure we’re up for it.

What is World Naked Gardening Day?

Traditionally, Wold Naked Gardening Day (or WNGD for the insiders) is celebrated on the first Saturday of May – you wouldn’t want to have to miss out the occasion due to a work thing after all, so a day on the weekend seemed appropriate. As we, just as you, are complete novices to the experience, we had a look at the official WNGD website to know what to expect.

“So what should you do? First of all, on the first Saturday of May, find an opportunity to get naked and do some gardening. Do so alone, with friends, with family, with your gardening club, or with any other group collected for that purpose. Do it inside your house, in your back yard, on a hiking trail, at a city park, or on the streets. Stay private or go public. Make it a quiet time or make it a public splash. Just get naked and make your part of the botanical world a healthier and more attractive place.”

“Secondly, tell someone about your experience. No one owns this event, so it does not really matter whom you tell, but tell someone. Tell your friends about your day of naked gardening; write down what you thought of it and email it to your local newspaper; post your thoughts and images onto an Internet site; submit stories and photos to your club newsletter.”

The instructions are quite clear, even though we’re not sure emailing pictures of you doing some naked gardening to whomever should be taken too lightly. After all, you can’t be too sure about how that person will take those – quite explicit – images. 

However, if you’re feeling like you’re up for the challenge and you’ve got a garden, why not strip naked on May 6^th? Let’s just hope the sun will be out, otherwise, the whole experience could soon become less enjoyable.

Berlin takes a stance

No matter the reason, the city of Berlin has got your back. Following a discrimination complained addressed to the senate’s ombudsperson’s office about the right to go swimming topless, a new rule has now been adopted in all of Berlin’s public swimming pools. The Berliner Baederbetriebe, the organization running the pools, has decided to allow anyone to go for a swim whilst being topless.

The ombudsman very much welcomes the decision of the bathing establishments because it creates equal rights for all Berliners, whether male, female or non-binary and because it also creates legal certainty for the staff in the bathing establishments.

Doris Liebscher, Head of the ombudsperson’s office, declared in a statement.

“Now it is a matter of the regulation being applied consistently and no more evictions or house bans being issued”, she said, referring to the fact that before, women who went to bathe topless were not only asked to cover themselves but were sometimes even banned from the establishment for good. “The decision shows once again how successful the establishment of the independent LADS ombudsman is: it supports citizens and administration in settling complaints of discrimination quickly, free of charge and out of court.”

When exactly the decision will go into effect, hasn’t been shared yet. However, Berlin is not the first German city allowing everyone to take a swim topless. Göttingen adopted a similar regulation earlier, even though the city decided to only allow topless swimming for women during the weekends.

More and more users are posting videos of the practice, some of them have got removed by the platform, but some remain. Each person chooses the most comfortable position for them to tan their genitals, some sit on their backs, with their legs up in the air, others choose something like a naked downward facing dog yoga pose.

Regardless of the posture, they claim the practice increase their vibrations and has medical benefits as well. Starting from the idea that people absorb vitamin D from sun exposure, they believe that the perineum, being a more sensitive area, can absorb more and “30 seconds of perineum sunning is equivalent to walking around in the sun with your clothes on all day long”.

The practice also received some attention 3 years ago, when people were talking about it on Instagram, but it has only gone truly viral now, thanks to Tik Tok. In 2019, Instagram user @metaphysicalmeagan, who describes herself as a “Hydration Expert/ Modern Day Mermaid”, was saying perineum sunning is an ancient Taoist practice, claiming the perineum is considered the “Gate of Life and Death” in Taoism.

“This is a gateway where energy enters & exits the body. (…) It brings in prana or solar energy from the sun into the organs within the body which strengthens the organs. Perineum sunning prevents against the leakage of chi or life force energy from the body. This in turn sustains health & longevity of the physical body”, her caption reads.

Doctors are strongly advising people not to sun their perineum. Dr Diana Gall told Insider that although “practicing mindfulness and meditation and getting your dose of Vitamin D is beneficial for mental and physical health”, sun exposure damages the skin and should be avoided. “This is a classic example of social media medical misinformation which in some cases can be damaging or dangerous”, added Dr Stephanie Ooi.

However, she has also admitted that there are some places where she would never pose nude to respect the culture and local laws; for example, in Dubai.

One of her favourite places on earth is her birthplace: Las Vegas. This place, including its surrounding area, has amazing scenery, perfect for all nature lovers and desert lovers like her. “I like the red rocks, the sand dunes and the dry lake beds,” she said.

Her family has totally accepted her new lifestyle and is supportive of her nudism. Indeed, in most cases is her sister taking the pictures.

Of course, this passion has often led her into some trouble. This is understandable, as not everybody is as open-minded as Sarah and her family. She got busted a few times during her photo shoots; but, fortunately, in most cases, she received only a warning at worst.

Only once Sarah and her sister were asked to stop the shooting. It happened right outside of her beloved Las Vegas, in Valley of Fire state park. There, the park ranger forced them to immediately leave the park.

Since Sarah adopted the “au naturel” approach, she stopped shaving too. So now her pit hair is clearly visible to anybody… and she is proud of it! 

She admits being an “incorrigible provocateur”, who never loses the opportunity to provoke other people, showing her body hair at best whenever possible.

The first reactions to her hairy pictures were quite surprising and polarizing. “When I say polarizing, I mean that people either want to marry me or kill me,” she asserted.

Many people hardly criticized her naturist approach to life and her choice to stop shaving. Some of them call her hussy, because of her confidence posing naked in public and in front of a camera. But the criticism did not stop her. Instead, she accepted it and started to make fun of all the criticism she received. The Instagrammer believes that getting naked can boost body positivity and self-confidence and can help people to accept their body flaws. She advises other nudists to overcome their fear and realize that most people aren’t looking at them.

Female swimmers are now allowed to use public pools without covering their chests for a summer test period, which started 1 May and will last until 31 August.

A spokesperson for the local authorities revealed that the sports committee of the city of Göttingen was the one that recommended swimmers at indoor and outdoor pools should be allowed to swim topless at weekends should wish to do so.

The testing phase is, for the moment, implemented only during weekends, as to avoid interference with school swimming lessons which take place during the week.

The recommendation came after an incident where a person was asked to cover their chest at a local pool and they refused, as they identified as male. The spokesperson confirmed that the pool guest protested for a while, but, in the end, the pool authority escorted them out and even banned them from the premises.

The controversy is even more surprising in the context of Germany’s nudity rules in other establishments. Most of the saunas in the country are not separated on the basis of sex and it is mandatory for guests to be naked while using the facilities, for hygienic reasons.

Moreover, Germany is well known for the popular nudist movement Freikörperkultur (FKK) which literally translates to “free body culture“.

Despite all this, until now, it has been mandatory for women, as well as men, at public swimming pools to wear bathing suits covering all their “private parts”.
