One of the better-known examples of art at the airport is the so-called Real Time clock by Maarten Baas, which has been part of Lounge 2 since 2016. The clock features hands drawn on in real time with a roller and paint by the designer himself, dressed in a pair of blue overalls. It is part of Baas’ Real Time series, artworks designed to point out the strangeness of measured, a project which dates back to 2009.

The People’s Clock

Ten years later, Baas returns to Schiphol with yet another art installation. Just like last time, the designer put together a clock. However, contrary to his design from 2016, The People’s Clock was made with the cooperation of some 1,000 people.

“Thousands of people are involved in the clock. It’s a huge production and really the effort of so many people who did this behind the scenes. I don’t know any other example in which so many people for such a long time were concentrated on one place to make one artwork. So many people who are becoming, literally, time,” Baas explains in a docu about the process.

Not only does The People’s Clock show the passage of time, the project also demonstrates the power of cooperation. About 1,000 people, mainly airport employees such as security staff, baggage handlers, airline personnel, and cleaners, helped to make the piece of art become a reality. The volunteers were asked to move in sync in order to form the clock’s hour and minute hands. Meanwhile, a single person running a lap of the circular perimeter each minute forms the second hand.

The People’s Clock was filmed in real time at a hangar located at Schiphol, a process that took over 12 hours overall. In order to make sure that people stayed engaged, an array of activities was organised by the airport and its partners, such as yoga, silk-printing, games, meals, and workshops.

Coming on 12 August 2026, the total eclipse of the sun will be the first that some viewers in Europe have ever had the chance to witness. The region has not seen a so-called “totality” since 1999. Much of its path will travel remote areas like Siberia, the North Pole and Arctic, and Atlantic, so Spain offers eclipse tourists the most accessible view and has a more developed hospitality offer than the other territories involved.

However, the availability of that accommodation is already fast diminishing. Spain’s eclipse.info website warns that “It is advisable to plan your holiday to Spain well in advance to avoid complications, as this series of eclipses is a historic event.” It also clearly is trying to spread the footfall and revenues the eclipse is bound to bring, urging people to book “a trip of at least seven days.” It’s also worth noting that Spain is set to see two more years of eclipses before 2030, so there is still time to plan ahead for 2027 and 2028.

The path of totality will sweep across Spain from northwest to Valencia on the east coast, and beyond to the Balearic Islands. The Balearics in general are expected to be at the epicentre of the tourism surge, due to the rare romance of being able to watch the eclipse as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.

Expedia says demand for flights to Palma de Mallorca for the week of the eclipse has more than tripled already compared to last year, and some industry stakeholders, such as José Molina of Vestige Collection, speaking to Condé Nast Traveler, have estimated that Mallorca’s two million annual visitors could swell by another million arrivals in that week alone. 

Despite fears of cloudy skies ruining the eclipse in northern Spain, it is perhaps for that reason that it could remain a better bet for finding available accommodation and car rentals. Still, Hotels.com has reported room searches for the Spanish north on eclipse day and the day after were already up 125% year-on-year by January 2026. That’s an average. A Coruña, which juts into the Atlantic on a sweeping promontory and is the vanguard, giving kilometres of potential eclipse viewing spots, has seen a 435% increase in hotel demand.

In fact, A Coruña is at the vanguard of the Spanish eclipse, with the phenomenon starting there earliest, at around 19:30 in the evening, leaving plenty of post-eclipse time for aperitifs, tapas, and evening revels. Tourists thinking of heading to this provincial capital, however, might want to consider the fact that A Coruña also boasts a taller mean height of buildings than anywhere else in Spain, according to Land Registry data. In 2022, Westminster City Council started a £12.7 million council project to refurbish eight central London public toilets in collaboration with Hugh Broughton Architects. While the Victoria Embankment and Parliament Street facilities reopened their doors to the public in 2025, the third toilet to have benefited from extensive renovation works has now been inaugurated at the Piccadilly Circus Tube station by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Paul Dimoldenberg.

“Providing clean and accessible public toilets makes a real difference to people’s experience of our city. The refurbishment at Piccadilly Circus is part of a £12.7m investment programme across eight West End public toilets, and demonstrates the council’s commitment to providing high-quality public facilities for residents and the millions of visitors who come to Westminster each year. By restoring this historic site and enhancing it with contemporary design and public art, the council is improving essential infrastructure and ensuring it reflects the unique character and cultural heritage of the West End”, stated Councillor Sara Hassan, Westminster Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Ecology, Culture, and Air Quality.

Photogenic toilets

The new toilets are located at Exit 1 of the Piccadilly Circus underground station and provide essential amenities for both commuters and tourists. While structural and drainage improvements as well as new fire safety systems were carried out, it is mainly the new aesthetic of the toilets that catches the attention of passersby.

The toilets combine stainless steel doors with terrazzo floors and colourfully tiled walls, while the structural columns were given a playful pink colour. Overall, the architects were able to give the restrooms an Art Deco feel with a modern touch.  

In order to complete the design, London-based artist James Lambert added an artwork inspired by Anteros, the Greek god of requited love, featuring winged figures and a central arrow motif, rendered in a bold pink and yellow colour palette.

The toilets are accessible at a cost of 80 pence per visit. Those who want to admire the design will thus have to pay an entry fee to be able to do so. And while many applaud the makeover of the toilets online, some people are less enthusiastic, pointing out the fact that the restrooms might quickly look less appealing and protesting against the cost of a simple toilet visit.

The next of the eight restrooms to be given a complete overhaul is Green Park Station, followed by Carnaby Street, Westminster Bridge, Covent Garden, and Leicester Square.

Sweden’s Right of Public Access, or Allemansrätten, allows everyone to move freely through nature, even on private land. That means guardians will not have exclusive access to their islands. Visitors may pass through or camp briefly, reinforcing the idea that nature is shared and should be respected by all. This rule helps ensure guardians understand their responsibility while enjoying their temporary retreat. 

Each of the five islands offer a different kind of escape. Tjuvholmen near Lidköping is surrounded by pine forest and overlooks Lake Vänern, while Medbådan, shaped by the last Ice Age, combines small woodland areas with calm waters ideal for swimming or paddling. Skötbådan and Storberget offer a more rugged setting, with rocky shores and open sea views shaped by wind and waves. On the west coast, Marsten stands out for its pale stone landscape and clear waters popular for fishing. All islands must be reached by kayak, paddleboard, or boat, making the journey part of the experience. 

Each location has its own atmosphere, from forested calm to exposed coastal scenery. Some are closer to small towns with restaurants and museums, while others feel more remote and wild. Entering the contest is simple but creative. Applicants must submit a video, no longer than one minute, explaining why they deserve to become an island guardian. A jury made up of Visit Sweden representatives and partner organisations will select the five most compelling applications, focusing on creativity, enthusiasm for nature, and understanding of guardianship responsibilities. Winners will be announced in May 2026. 

The prize also includes a travel voucher worth up to SEK 20,000 (€18,000) for a round-trip to Sweden for two people, valid between June 2026 and May 2027. However, participants should not be camera-shy, as guardians are expected to take part in promotional activities and allow Visit Sweden to use their name, image, and comments for publicity.

According to the data, Disney parks had hosted more than 30,000 weddings by 2017, with ceremonies ranging from intimate gatherings to large celebrations. 

At Walt Disney World Resort, locations have included places such as the Disney Wedding Pavilion near Cinderella Castle, gardens, and themed spaces in parks like Epcot and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Couples can select from over 50 venues across Disney destinations worldwide. Ken’s first trips include Italy, Japan, and Mexico City. The campaign follows him as a first-time international traveller, learning how to get around, speak new languages, and adapt to unfamiliar places. These moments are used to highlight how travel can feel approachable, even for beginners.

While the TikTok video might not be anything special, the comment section soon turned interesting. While the comments have since been deleted, a TikTok user known as Tamara made a noteworthy remark.

“I’m getting 365 buttons one for each day because I want to do more stuff and I’m scared of time so I want to be more conscious of it.”

After that, people got curious. What did she mean by 365 buttons? Was she talking about actual clothing buttons or some metaphorical ones? And what was she going to do with those? 

“Just to have to see how quick days pass and to remind myself that time passes and I just have fun and to do a lot of stuff”, Tamara wrote in answer.

Yet still, people weren’t satisfied. Was she going to count the buttons or actually wear them? Why did she choose buttons, of all things? The questions went on and on without leading to anything, until finally Tamara wrote the now iconic words: “Hey so it actually only has to make sense to me for me to do it and I don’t feel like explaining it to anyone else.”

A philosophy for 2026

Those words have been shared, shared again, edited, and talked about ever since. People decided that 2026 would become the year of 365 buttons, a year during which they would do things just for themselves, without having to explain their reasons to anyone else. Even social media platform Tumblr jumped on the trend on 2 January 2026.

At the time of writing, the hashtag #365buttons has already been used in 5,340 different TikTok videos, and the viral trend isn’t about to go away anytime soon, judging by its popularity. While some people are just using Tamara’s catchphrase as a philosophy, others have actually gone out and bought 365 buttons to see the days go by.
