Set to last 24 hours, from midnight to midnight, the walk-out has been called by the nation’s two largest trade union groups (UGT and CCOO) and an array of others, including CGT and CNT. It is deliberately timed to coincide with street demonstrations by housing campaigners, in what will be the first joint general strike in Spain in 14 years. Falling in the middle of an election campaign, the strike call has caused some controversy.

It is hard to be precise about the exact impact of the industrial action, since workers in Spain are not legally obliged to tell their employers if they will join in or not. However, the atmosphere around the country is reportedly febrile, with widespread discontent about purchasing power and the provision of public services making itself felt. It’s worth remembering too that the strike preparations follow violent protests in neighbouring France. Travel advice from some governments, including the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, includes warnings about staying away from demonstrations, political gatherings, or marches.

Airport and airline operations are likely to be halted by the absence of ground staff, air traffic controllers, and cabin crews. Buses and metro lines will be offering, at best, a minimum skeleton service, and trains too, including the Renfe and high-speed operations that were involved in a horrific collision near Toledo on 28 October, which has caused public grief and anger.

The difficulties facing travellers will probably extend beyond public transport, as commuters who would usually use other means spill onto the roads. Also spilling onto the streets will be a series of protest marches up and down the country, which are expected to bring parts of major cities like Barcelona and Madrid to a standstill.

Tourist stays will also be affected by the potential shutdown of museums, galleries, restaurants, shops, and accommodation providers, which “may close or operate with limited holiday hours if staff join the walkout,” according to a roundup in the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

To avoid disruption or disappointment, visitors to Spain are advised to check their travel schedule for any details of cancellations ahead of time with their carrier and airport, as well as checking any private insurance policy terms. Cancellations due to strikes require customers to be refunded or rebooked on an alternative flight, but do not usually entitle travellers to compensation.

As well as feeding into the more generalised protest marches about the cost of living and in particular, housing, the industrial action aims to increase wages by up to seven percent, broaden access to affordable housing, improve working conditions, and defend social rights.

A signalling failure, then a collision

At 8:53 am, local time, a Renfe AVE service struck the rear of a stationary Iryo train near Urda in Toledo province, south of Madrid, destroying some carriages, and causing others to derail, with some falling down an embankment. Regional passenger figures indicate that 544 people were travelling on the two services: 397 on the Renfe train and 147, including a baby, on Iryo’s.

A computer or communications failure at about 8:30 am disrupted LZB, (the line’s automatic train-control system), bringing six trains to a stop over a 63-km stretch of track. Controllers working for infrastructure manager Adif in Madrid then authorised movements using alternative procedures. At 8:36 am, according to audio recordings leaked to press, the Renfe driver was cleared to resume normal running, but the Iryo train ahead could not restart, and the two collided about 17 minutes later.

What the recordings reveal — and what they do not

The audio reveals that a controller told the Renfe driver to disconnect and reconnect LZB, before proceeding “con marcha normal” (at normal speed). The driver seeks confirmation of that instruction, which the controller gives. The BBC reports that normal fallback protocols would ordinarily require movement according to visibility, at no more than 40 km/h.

The BBC also describes controller conversations with the Iryo driver, who tells control the train is at a halt at Urda’s entry signal. Although instructed to resume the journey, the driver subsequently explains that the train’s safety system will not permit a restart. That account suggests the control centre received notice that Iryo remained stationary while Renfe was approaching at least five minutes before the collision. It does not however establish how the information was processed or whether further warnings or instructions were issued.

The recordings reported by Spanish media have become central to public debate and outrage about the crash, with railway unions criticising the release of the excerpts and the potential for undue blame on individual workers, rather than systemic issues.

The investigation must look beyond one instruction

A judge and a government commission are now conducting separate investigations. Immediate concerns include what disabled the LZB, what information controllers possessed after the failure, why one train was able to move while the other could not, and what protections were still active. The inquiries also need to establish how the fallback rules were applied and how the stationary train’s position was communicated.

There is also a wider safety worry: why did safeguards not prevent a collision once automatic control was disrupted? In an interview reported by Politico, railway-signalling specialist Jaime Tamarit emphasises that protection systems are meant to compensate for human mistakes. Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that Iryo’s chief executive had previously raised the problem of recurring disconnections on the line.

How did Spain’s high-speed railways reach this point?

Questions over Spain’s repeated recent deadly crashes must factor in a range of information. The country boasts a large and expanding high-speed network but still operates ageing signal equipment in places, and some will argue authorities have got it wrong when it comes to balancing construction and upkeep costs, and the demands placed on railway staff.

Politico’s analysis, citing European Commission data, says Spain spent an annual average of €1.5 billion on high-speed rail between 2018 and 2022. Around 16% went towards maintenance, renewals, and upgrades, compared with 34%–39% in France, Germany, and Italy. Railway investment fell sharply after the 2008 and 2012 financial crises and has remained below earlier levels in real terms. Nonetheless, Adif has defended its maintenance arrangements and safety compliance record.

Technology renewal is another unfinished, and some might say, unending, task. According to Politico, the Madrid–Seville line’s German-designed signalling system dates from 1992. An upgrade to the European Rail Traffic Management System, or ERTMS, was authorised in 2020 but remains incomplete. Spain is not the only European country in that position. EU Agency for Railways figures show only about 10% of the trans-European transport network were implementing ERTMS by the end of 2024. ERTMS incorporates automatic supervision intended to prevent unsafe movements, including braking when permitted limits are breached. Whether it would have prevented this particular collision remains unclear. Still, notably, the trains involved on 28 October were not using it.

It could be said Spain is a victim of its own rail success. Its fast and popular network has seen traffic grow, with traffic controllers’ union SCF pointing to average daily Madrid–Barcelona services multiplying by 58.9% between 2019 and 2024. Increasing traffic brings concerns about staffing and capacity. Speaking to the Associated Press, SCF spokesperson Raquel Ayllón highlighted issues around staffing levels, workload, and recurrent system failures. Engineers’ union SEMAF has also issued repeated warnings about repeated LZB outages. 

The human toll and the importance of rail

Three days of national mourning began on Thursday, 29 October, with widespread ramifications felt across society. The BBC reports that hospitals postponed planned procedures to treat casualties, while authorities organised DNA sampling to help identify missing people. Travel Tomorrow’s initial report documented an urgent appeal for blood donations. 

Rail services towards Andalusia were suspended, causing disruption for travellers on a major route out of the capital. Political careers too could also be cut short, as many outlets are reporting public anger at public servants including Transport Minister Oscar Puente and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who is in the midst of a snap election campaign.

Going further, some might say confidence in the rail network in Spain—one of the world’s fastest growing tourist destinations—has been severely damaged, at a time when rail travel had been enjoying a resurgence thanks to its efficiency and environmental credentials. High profile deaths among the victims (including former Employment Minister Fátima Báñez; long jumper Julieta Gallego; and award-winning University of Cambridge researcher Dr Marta Shahbazi) have added to the media frenzy.

However, as The Guardian notes, it’s worth remembering that fatal European railway accidents overall are in decline since 2010, and rail is still far safer than road transport. The scale of this disaster warrants both compassion and scrutiny, without being held up as proof that every high-speed journey is unsafe.

Less than a year after a train crash in Adamuz, which left 46 people dead and 152 injured, Spain is being confronted with another deadly train collision. In the province of Toledo, between the towns of Mora, Orgaz, and Urda, two high-speed trains have run into each other.

The trains were reportedly carrying 544 people: the Iryo 7076 had 146 passengers and one baby on board, while the AVE 2080 carried 397 passengers. At the moment of writing, 30 people have officially been reported dead, but local authorities warn the death toll could rise even further and are talking about a “major tragedy”.

Following the crash, Madrid’s blood bank issued an urgent appeal for blood donations for all blood groups in order to be able to respond to those in need.

“Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo. I remain in constant contact with the Minister of Transport, @oscar_puente_, and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha, @garciapage. Emergency services are working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety, in coordination with all the involved administrations. My affection, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families,” Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on X.

Both vehicles were travelling on the Madrid-Seville line and, according to Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha region, one of them may have stopped before the accident.

The exact circumstances of the incident have yet to be determined, and an investigation has been started. Reportedly, the Renfe AVE train from Madrid to Sevilla ran into the Iryo train ahead. The Spanish news agency EFE has shared that at least three carriages have derailed, including some that have fallen off the embankment.

“We heard a massive roar, a truly enormous thud that went on for 10 seconds, as if the train were ‌about to derail. Through the right-hand window, we could see a wrecked train – I imagine it must have been the other one,” Miguel, one of the passengers aboard the trains, told COPE Radio, according to Reuters.

Following the accident, services between Madrid and the southern region of Andalucía have been suspended for an unknown amount of time.

The emergency service of the Castilla-La Mancha government has set up a hotline for all those who might be affected by the crash, which can be reached by calling 900 122 112, or 900 10 10 20 (Renfe), or 900 001 403 (Iryo).

“Just received the devastating news from Toledo on the collision of two high-speed trains. My heart goes out to the victims’ families and loved ones. Today, Europe mourns with you,” European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.

The announcement of the ordinance’s final approval was published in the provincial official gazette on 7 October 2026. The council says the measures aim to protect the coastline, improve safety and help residents and visitors share its bathing areas.

The restrictions cover La Laguna’s municipal coastline, including Bajamar’s beach and natural pools, Jover in Tejina, La Barranquera in Valle de Guerra, and El Arenisco in Punta del Hidalgo. They apply within the municipality, rather than across Tenerife as a whole.

Smoking, camping and disruptive music targeted

Under the ordinance, municipal beaches and natural pools are designated as smoke-free spaces. Camping and overnight stays are prohibited, alongside leaving rubbish or other waste behind.

The rules also prohibit using soap, shampoo and other hygiene products in public showers and bathing areas. Sound equipment that disturbs the tranquillity of these spaces is restricted, with exceptions for emergencies and officially authorised events.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez said the aim was to balance enjoyment of the bathing areas with protection of the marine environment and harmonious use of public spaces.

Accessibility is another priority. The council has committed to removing physical barriers and providing amphibious chairs and adapted toilets, particularly during periods of high demand. These measures accompany improvements to lifeguarding and rescue services.

The €3,000 maximum does not apply automatically to every breach. The published ordinance text sets fines of up to €300 for minor offences, between €300 and €1,000 for serious offences, and between €1,000 and €3,000 for very serious offences.

It also allows a first smoking or vaping offence to be addressed with a warning if the person immediately stops. The text stipulates that the ordinance takes effect 15 working days after its full publication in the provincial official gazette, distinguishing approval from immediate enforcement.

Spain’s wider push towards smoke-free public spaces

La Laguna’s measures come amid broader efforts to expand smoking restrictions in Spain. As Travel Tomorrow previously reported, national proposals would extend smoke-free areas to hospitality terraces, beaches, public swimming pools and other shared spaces, while bringing vaping restrictions into line with tobacco rules. These proposals are separate from the municipal ordinance.

Other destinations have explored similar measures. In October 2025, Travel Tomorrow reported on San Sebastián’s proposed beach rules, which combined a smoking ban with plans to allow dogs on beaches between 9:00 pm and midnight during summer.

That proposal cited research indicating that cigarette butts accounted for between 30% and 50% of rubbish collected from the region’s beaches, highlighting the environmental concerns behind efforts to create smoke-free coastlines.

At the heart of the new strategy is algorithmic recommendation technology similar to that used by streaming platforms such as Netflix. Rather than simply directing visitors towards Barcelona’s best-known attractions, the system will provide personalised recommendations based on individual interests, while also helping distribute tourists away from overcrowded hotspots.

The shift comes as Barcelona continues to grapple with the consequences of overtourism. Around 16 million tourists visit the Spanish city each year, approximately ten times its number of inhabitants, while Spain is set to overtake France as the world’s most visited country by 2040.

Tensions between visitors and residents have repeatedly surfaced in recent years, reaching particularly visible levels during the summers of 2024 and 2025, when protesters used water guns against tourists to express their frustration over mass tourism.

Barcelona has since introduced a series of measures aimed at reducing the pressure, including plans to phase out around 10,000 short-term rental licences by 2028 and double the tourist tax for overnight stays.

But the latest strategy goes beyond controlling tourist numbers. Instead, Barcelona wants to reshape the type of tourism it attracts, placing greater emphasis on culture, gastronomy and events rather than encouraging more visitors to come simply for its most famous landmarks.

“The message of the city now is: not one tourist more,” Barcelona’s commissioner for sustainable tourism, José Antonio Donaire, recently told The New York Times. “The city has decided to fix a flat horizon on a curve that otherwise rises infinitely. We don’t want to grow more. We want the tourists that the city already has. There were 15.7 million tourists in the city in 2025 — that’s the threshold. Sixteen million is the maximum.”

As part of the shift, the city’s tourism organisation has also changed its branding from Visit Barcelona to This Is Barcelona. Rather than explicitly encouraging people to visit, the new identity is intended to showcase the city’s character, culture and way of life.

“For the last 15 or 20 years we’ve only been talking about negative externalities of tourism, which are correct, but we have to also highlight the positive externalities and not take them for granted,” Mateu Hernández, CEO of Barcelona Turisme, told The Independent.

The new This Is Barcelona website will play an important role in that strategy. Its recommendation technology will offer personalised suggestions to potential visitors, while helping the tourism organisation manage flows around heavily visited areas. The focus will increasingly be on higher-quality, culture-based experiences, including exhibitions, concerts, gastronomy and other events.

Travellers planning on travelling to Valencia in Spain in the future will be able to benefit from a unique high-speed rail station. The new Valencia Central Station will run underground and will be connected to the historic Estación del Norte, meaning trains will be able to travel through Valencia from north to south, overcoming the current terminus arrangement and making train travel within the city more fluent.

To make the station become a reality, the Adif-Alta Velocidad Evaluation Committee has selected a team consisting of three separate companies. Technology group Sener will be collaborating with the UK-based practice RSHP and the Valencia-based architecture studio ERRE.

“The new station will enable further progress in the city’s railway transformation, improving connectivity and efficiency through the integration of different transport modes within an infrastructure designed to respond to both current and future mobility needs,” said Jesús Planchuelo, Railway Director at Sener.

In order to blend the new station with its existing surroundings, high-speed and commuter trains as well as metro services will be located underground. However, a series of sweeping roofs that pay homage to the historic Estación del Norte will provide an airy and light-flooded environment, thus preventing the station from feeling too crowded or cave-like. Travellers will be met with natural light, fresh air, and views while journeying underground. 

“The conceptualisation of the project arises from respect for the architectural beauty of Estación del Norte, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Our strategy is to intervene in the urban space without altering any of its façades, preserving its integrity while enhancing its heritage value,” shared Jose Martí, Amparo Roig, and M. Ángeles Ros, Architect Partners at ERRE, in a statement. 

The space gained aboveground by burying the station will be reserved for walking, cycling, greenery, and public life in general. The green axis will also act as a way to connect the station to the existing Estación del Norte, which is scheduled to undergo a refurbishment, and Valencia’s future Central Park.

Tourism in Spain has been booming, hitting a record 58.1 million international tourists during the first seven months of 2026, an uptick of 4.6% compared with the same period in 2025, itself a record year, according to the Frontur figures published by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE). International visitors spent €82.05 billion during the seven-month period, an increase of 7.8% year-on-year and another first.

Deloitte and Google are forecasting that Spain will overtake France as the world’s most touristed nation by 2040, handling around 110 million international tourists a year by that date, compared with 105 million in France.

The economic benefits are welcome but is that volume of visitors sustainable? Spain’s success has been tempered by anti-tourism protests, with locals in popular tourist destinations complaining about anti-social behaviour by visitors, a housing crisis driven by the prevalence of short-term holiday lets, water and resource shortages, and a cost-of-living so high that Spaniards cannot afford to take vacations in their own resorts.

Acknowledging these existential issues at Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, Carlos Ruiz González, director of the Spanish Tourist Office for the Gulf region at Turespaña said: “We have some destinations that are dying of success, I would say.” He went on to explain that “the government of Spain decided this has to be a full government policy, a country policy, and not just tourism. All the ministries, all the sectors in Spain are aligned.”

The result is a three-phase programme, to be implemented in sequential two-year action plans, bringing public views to bear when dealing with a range of economic, environmental, and social challenges, including climate change, jobs, affordability, the rural exodus, and overtourism.

Part of the answer lies in encouraging visitors to spread their footfall and spending further and wider than the traditional holiday hotspots, drawing some holidaymakers away from the coasts and into the mountains, or highlighting the attractions of smaller towns such as Castilla. The country’s high-speed train network is seen as a key asset in making that happen.

But it remains to be seen whether Spain can maintain its strong position, whether the new model will support competition and profits while protecting natural and cultural resources—all while equitably distributing, in the words of the government, “the benefits and burdens of tourism.” And that includes sharing the responsibility for finding solutions.

Some apartments in the host neighbourhood of Valdebebas have seen rental prices increase by as much as 1,000% for the race period, from 11 to 13 September 2026, according to real estate agents in the Spanish capital and local media reports. Euronews found one flat in the district listed on Airbnb at €11,400 for four days, described as “a house designed for VIP groups”.

Other luxury properties, including those in the city’s historic heart and areas such as Salamanca, Chamberí, Chamartín and Los Jerónimos, are being listed at up to 10 times their usual rates, according to local media reports.

Hotel room rates have also gone through the roof, reaching an average of €1,071 per night for the race weekend, an increase of 147% compared with the previous week, according to consultancy Simon-Kucher.

It’s a phenomenon that goes beyond accommodation. Unsurprisingly, with tens of thousands of motorsport fans expected to descend on the city, parking spaces in local garages are going for as much as €500 over the race weekend.

The demand is being driven by the sheer number of motorsport fans who want to see the race. Around 120,000 tickets have been sold, while 345,000 people are expected to participate in Grand Prix-related activities across the city. More than 80,000 visitors are expected to travel to Madrid for the event, including around 45,000 international spectators. The influx is anticipated to generate €467 million and nearly 9,000 jobs, according to analysis from PwC.

The Grand Prix joins Shakira’s Madrid residency and Celine Dion’s return to live performance in Paris among the major events on Europe’s autumn calendar that are pushing tourism demand and receipts to new levels.

Despite those economic positives, some Madrileños may be glad to see the back of the F1 race, although it is set to return annually for the next decade under the current contract. Residents have formed protest groups such as “Stop Formula 1 Madrid” to oppose a project they say “will only create noise and mobility problems for thousands of households and workers”. They also cite studies suggesting the event will “be a significant source of air pollution”.

For now, residents will have to see how the inaugural race affects their neighbourhoods, with many reportedly fitting properties with noise meters to monitor the disturbance. As the general director of a local golf course affected by a partial closure for the weekend put it: “Let’s see how it goes this year. It’s the first time, so we don’t really know how it’s going to go. So we will wait, and then we can have discussions with organisers again.”

Between January and July, international arrivals increased by 4.6% compared with the same period in 2025, according to the latest Frontur figures published by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE).

Tourism revenues grew even faster. International visitors spent €82.05 billion in Spain during the seven-month period, an increase of 7.8% year-on-year and another record for the country.

The figures reinforce Spain’s position as one of the fastest-growing major tourism destinations in Europe. In 2025, the country welcomed a record 96.8 million international tourists, meaning even relatively modest growth this year would be enough to take Spain beyond 100 million annual arrivals for the first time.

Furthermore, a recent study by Deloitte and Google predicts Spain could eventually overtake France as the world’s most visited country, reaching around 110 million international tourists annually by 2040.

Visitor spending grows faster than arrivals

The record-breaking trend continued during the peak summer season. Spain received 11.5 million international tourists in July alone, 4.6% more than during the same month last year.

Their spending increased considerably faster, rising by 10.9% to €18.22 billion.

The figures continue a trend increasingly emphasised by Spanish tourism authorities: tourism revenues are growing faster than visitor numbers.

Accommodation accounted for the largest share of international visitor expenditure in July, representing 19.8% of the total. Package holidays accounted for 19.3%, followed closely by international transport at 19.2%.

The most common length of stay was between four and seven nights, accounting for 5.7 million visitors, an increase of 8.7% year-on-year.

Independent travel also continued to dominate. Almost 8.5 million international tourists visited Spain without a package holiday in July, compared with around 3.1 million who travelled as part of one.

UK remains Spain’s largest tourism market

The United Kingdom remained by far Spain’s largest source market between January and July, accounting for 11.5 million visitors, 4.6% more than during the same period last year.

France ranked second with more than 7.2 million tourists, an increase of 1.2%, while approximately 6.9 million visitors arrived from Germany, down 0.5%.

Italy recorded the strongest percentage growth among Spain’s major source markets. Around 3.5 million Italian tourists travelled to the country during the first seven months of the year, 10.3% more than in 2025.

Growth was even stronger among visitors grouped by INE under other source countries, with arrivals increasing by 16.9% to 717,000 and spending rising by 24.5%.

British travellers also dominated the July figures. Around 2.2 million visitors arrived from the UK during the month, an increase of 5.6% year-on-year, while their expenditure reached €3.04 billion, up 4.8%.

Madrid and Valencia record strong growth

Catalonia remained Spain’s most visited autonomous community during the first seven months of 2026, receiving 11.94 million international tourists, 2.9% more than during the same period last year.

The Balearic Islands followed with 9.16 million visitors, an increase of 1.8%. The Canary Islands received 9.02 million tourists, 0.6% fewer than a year earlier.

Andalusia also attracted around 9.02 million international visitors, but recorded much stronger growth, with arrivals increasing by 8.2%.

Among Spain’s major destinations, Madrid and the Valencian Community posted the strongest increases during the January-to-July period, at 9.6% and 8.9% respectively.

The trend accelerated in July. The Valencian Community received 1.63 million international tourists during the month, 9.5% more than a year earlier, while Madrid welcomed around 800,000, an increase of 11%.

Spain moves closer to 100 million tourists

The latest figures add weight to expectations that Spain could cross the 100-million-tourist mark in 2026. After welcoming 96.8 million international visitors in 2025, Spain would need growth of only around 3.3% this year to reach 100 million. Arrivals during the first seven months are currently running above that pace, at 4.6%.

Maintaining the current growth rate throughout the year would put Spain at roughly 101 million international visitors in 2026.

Such a result would also further narrow the gap with France, which welcomed 102 million international visitors in 2025 and remains the world’s most visited country.

The comparison is particularly striking when tourism expenditure is taken into account. Spain generated €134.7 billion in international tourism spending in 2025, considerably more than France’s €77.5 billion, despite receiving fewer international visitors.

Spain’s challenge is therefore increasingly shifting from attracting more tourists towards managing the economic, social and environmental consequences of its extraordinary popularity.

Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu has advocated a model of “calm growth”, with greater emphasis on increasing tourism’s economic value, spreading visitors across different regions and seasons, and promoting inland, cultural, gastronomic and nature tourism.

With 58.1 million international visitors already recorded by the end of July, Spain’s latest tourism record suggests that managing that growth could become an even more pressing issue if the country passes 100 million arrivals this year.

Fly2Galicia will begin services from Santiago–Rosalía de Castro Airport on 1 December 2026, connecting the Galician capital with Alicante, Granada and Zaragoza in Spain, as well as Brussels, Prague, Munich, Venice and Milan.

The new carrier is positioning itself as a low-cost option for travellers to Galicia, with introductory fares starting at around €40 on some international routes. Tickets went on sale in August, with fares varying depending on the destination and travel date.

Even the lowest fares are expected to include two pieces of hand luggage, comprising an eight-kilogram cabin bag and one personal item.

Despite being marketed under the Fly2Galicia brand, the initial flights will not be operated directly by the new airline. Instead, services will be carried out by another European operator, whose identity has yet to be announced.

The initial schedule is planned to run until 24 October 2027, with reports suggesting an Airbus A320 will be deployed. The airline is also reportedly considering adding a second aircraft for the summer 2027 season.

Santiago prepares for 2027 Holy Year

The timing of the launch coincides with preparations for the 2027 Jacobean Holy Year, or Año Santo Xacobeo, when the Feast of Saint James on 25 July falls on a Sunday.

Holy Years traditionally bring significantly larger numbers of pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela and the Camino de Santiago, as Catholics are able to obtain a plenary indulgence after completing certain religious rites in the city.

The Camino has already been experiencing record demand in recent years, with travellers increasingly undertaking the pilgrimage for cultural, sporting and personal reasons as well as religious ones.

Fly2Galicia’s international network could therefore provide additional connectivity for pilgrims travelling to and from Galicia, particularly from Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic.

The airline currently has no announced routes to the United Kingdom.

More airlines turn their attention to Santiago

Fly2Galicia will not be the only carrier expanding its presence at Santiago–Rosalía de Castro Airport ahead of 2027.

Wizz Air has also announced new connections to Santiago from Rome and Warsaw starting in December 2026. The airline is expected to establish a permanent base at the Galician airport in February 2027, accompanied by new domestic services to Malaga, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Zaragoza.

The additional capacity could strengthen Santiago’s role as a gateway not only to the Camino but to Galicia as a whole.

Santiago de Compostela’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of Spain’s most important historic centres, dominated by the cathedral that marks the traditional finishing point of the Camino. Beyond the city, visitors can explore destinations including A Coruña and Vigo, as well as the beaches, islands and vineyards of the Rías Baixas.
