Singapore is preparing for the biggest transformation of Sentosa in decades after unveiling the Greater Sentosa Master Plan, an ambitious blueprint that will reshape the island and neighbouring Pulau Brani over the next 20 years. The project forms part of the wider Greater Southern Waterfront development, which aims to transform around 30 kilometres of Singapore’s southern coastline into a destination for tourism, leisure, business and housing. The plans include new attractions, improved transport, expanded green spaces and upgraded beaches designed to encourage visitors to stay longer and explore more of the island. Between April 2024 and March 2025, Sentosa welcomed 16.9 million visitors, and the long-term ambition is to double that number.

The first phase of the redevelopment is expected to open in the early 2030s, while new projects will continue to be introduced into the 2040s. The plans also support Singapore’s Tourism 2040 strategy and coincide with the future opening of Changi Airport’s Terminal 5, which will significantly increase the country’s passenger capacity. Rather than simply adding more attractions, the redevelopment aims to create a destination where entertainment and nature complement each other. “We are reimagining what Sentosa can become for decades ahead, an island transformed, connected and sustained,” said Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu. She added that the masterplan will “redefine Greater Sentosa as Singapore’s island playground, bolder, livelier and more exciting than before.”

One of the biggest additions will be Pulau Brani, a 120-hectare island next to Sentosa that is currently occupied mainly by port facilities. Once port operations move to Tuas Port, the area will be redeveloped into what officials describe as the region’s next-generation leisure destination. One of its largest development sites, Brani West, has been reserved for what the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) calls “game-changing attractions”, although details have not yet been revealed. Resorts World Sentosa will also continue its expansion with its Waterfront Lifestyle Development and the opening of Super Nintendo World, both expected in 2030.

Visitors can also look forward to several new attractions across Sentosa itself. Along Siloso Beach, the new Sensorium will combine indoor attractions, green public spaces and a flexible venue for festivals, concerts and other events throughout the year. Nearby, the Imbiah Canopy will become a new hilltop destination with restaurants, shops, attractions and sheltered event spaces overlooking Sentosa, Pulau Brani and Singapore’s Southern Waterfront. One of the first projects to open will be the Imbiah Lookout Walk, a sheltered elevated forest canopy trail connecting the award-winning Sensoryscape to Imbiah Lookout and a wider network of walking trails.

Nature and sustainability remain central to the redevelopment plans. Over time, SDC intends to connect the forests of Sentosa, Pulau Brani and Serapong into one continuous green corridor, which will eventually link to Singapore’s Southern Ridges on the mainland. New hotels will also be designed with greater greenery integration to blend into the island’s landscape. “Energy and restoration are not opposites,” according to SDC, describing the philosophy that will guide future developments by combining vibrant attractions with spaces for relaxation and nature.

© Government of Singapore

The island’s coastline will also undergo major changes in the coming years. Siloso Beach will be the first to be rejuvenated, followed by Palawan and Tanjong beaches. Plans include new beach clubs, treetop dining experiences and multi-purpose event spaces that will allow activities to continue from sunrise until late in the evening. Offshore, six existing islets will eventually be connected by floating boardwalks, creating a new island-hopping route while also supporting coastal protection measures against rising sea levels.

Getting around Greater Sentosa will become easier as part of the redevelopment. A new Island Heart transport hub will connect mainland Singapore with both Sentosa and Pulau Brani, serving as the main arrival gateway for visitors. The waterfront hub will feature a large solar-powered canopy, as well as hotels, restaurants and public spaces. The existing 2.1-kilometre Sentosa Express monorail will eventually be replaced by a new People Mover System with a greater passenger capacity, while the Singapore Cable Car will continue operating. SDC is also exploring additional transport options, including water taxis, to improve connectivity across the expanded destination.

Protecting the island’s character remains one of SDC’s priorities as Greater Sentosa continues to evolve. “We want to create the next generation of world-class experiences inspired by our beautiful coastlines, our greenery, our heritage, our sense of escape, as well as the Singapore identity,” said SDC chief executive Thien Kwee Eng. “At the same time, we want to grow Sentosa thoughtfully, and protect the island’s soul, while making it easier to explore, to access and to enjoy.” As new attractions continue to open over the coming decades, the masterplan aims to position Greater Sentosa as one of Asia’s leading leisure destinations while offering visitors a broader mix of entertainment, nature and cultural experiences.

Travellers planning a European beach, lake or river escape this summer can expect generally high water quality across the continent, according to the latest bathing water assessment from the European Environment Agency and the European Commission.

The 2025 report reveals that 85% of bathing waters in the European Union were rated “excellent”, while 96% met at least the minimum standards required under EU rules. Only 1.5% were classified as poor, underscoring both the progress made in recent decades and the need for continued action at problem sites.

For holidaymakers, the findings offer reassurance at the start of the peak travel period. From Atlantic beaches to Mediterranean resorts, most designated swimming spots are monitored regularly for bacteria linked to faecal contamination, including Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Authorities use the results to classify bathing waters and issue public warnings where needed.

Coastal destinations continue to perform best. In 2025, 88% of EU coastal bathing waters were rated excellent, compared with 78% of inland sites such as lakes and rivers. Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, and Austria were among the strongest performers, with more than 95% of bathing waters achieving excellent status.

The picture is more mixed for river swimming, an activity enjoying renewed popularity in European cities as residents and visitors seek cooling outdoor experiences during hotter summers. Across the EU, Albania, and Switzerland, only 47% of around 1,200 designated river bathing sites reached excellent quality in 2025. Rivers are more vulnerable to short-term pollution after heavy rain, wastewater overflows, agricultural runoff, and changes in water flow.

Even so, the broader trend remains positive. Europe’s bathing water quality has improved significantly over recent decades, largely because of tighter environmental regulation, better wastewater collection networks, and major investment in urban wastewater treatment. These changes have helped reopen or improve waters that were once heavily polluted, including some urban rivers.

Coastal bathing water quality by country in 2025 © European Environment Agency (EEA)

However, the assessment also highlights the limits of current bathing water checks. EU rules focus on bacteria that indicate health risks for swimmers, but they do not cover all chemical pollutants, such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, nutrients, or emerging contaminants. These are addressed under other EU water legislation.

For travellers, the practical advice is straightforward: check official national or regional bathing water websites before swimming, particularly after heavy rainfall or when visiting rivers and lakes. Many countries provide real-time or seasonal information, while the European Environment Agency also offers an interactive map covering thousands of bathing sites.

With demand for nature-based tourism rising and heatwaves becoming more frequent, clean and accessible bathing waters are increasingly an important part of Europe’s visitor appeal. The 2025 findings suggest that most travellers can swim with confidence — while reminding destinations that water quality remains a key factor in sustainable tourism competitiveness.

Travel between islands in the Maldives is about to get easier and cleaner thanks to private investment in a fleet of electric water taxis that promises to improve connectivity and create a sustainable maritime corridor.

Up to 100 electric hydrofoil boats are expected to form the Navier Network between the islands, a $100 million (€87 million) project partnership between San Francisco-based maritime tech firm Navier and Dubai’s JIH Global Investment.

Hydrofoils behave a bit like inverted aircraft wings underwater, creating hydrodynamic lift to allow the boat to glide above the water as it accelerates, cutting down on drag, and reducing noise and disturbance to maritime habitats. Hydrofoil vessels are more efficient than other boats, emitting fewer pollutants.

In the Maldives, an archipelago where almost all journeys involve water transport, their use could represent a significant environmental gain and a huge step towards carbon neutrality by 2030, since the sustainable vessels are expected to replace a proportion of the fuel-powered seaplane and conventional boat journeys made by islanders and over two million visitors every year.

Up to five hydrofoil taxis in the shape of Navier N30s will be introduced to the island network over the coming year, with another 95 to follow by the end of 2029. Each vessels boasts a 75-nautical-mile range in electric mode, increasing to 150 nautical miles for hybrid operations. On-board facilities are set to include lounge seats, air-conditioned cabins, and Starlink Wi-Fi.

For Sampriti Bhattacharyya, founder and CEO of Navier the Maldives is “one of the most important maritime transportation markets in the world” making it “the perfect place to prove that maritime transportation can be cleaner, quieter, standardised, software-driven, and dramatically better for the guest experience. We are not just deploying boats. We are building the first sustainable luxury transportation network on water.”

The boats’ fit with both environmental goals and the premium segment was also a focus for Mohamed Ali Janah, Chairman of JIH Global Investment, who said in a statement: “The Maldives has always been at the frontier of luxury tourism, but as an island nation on the frontlines of climate change, we also have an opportunity to help define what the future of waterborne transportation looks like.”

Expressing ambitions to go beyond the Maldivian market, he explained: “With Navier, we see the potential to build not only a cleaner, more seamless network connecting airports, resorts, villas, and islands, but a scalable blueprint for sustainable maritime transportation, extending beyond the Maldives to island nations and coastal cities around the world.”

“Be water, my friend,” Bruce Lee famously said. Artificial intelligence seems to have taken the martial arts legend’s mantra a little too literally, as a new UN report sounds the alarm over the technology’s rapidly growing thirst and the enormous quantities of water consumed by AI data centres.

The report, produced by the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), highlights the significant amount of energy, water, and other resources being consumed by the AI boom. This is not the first study to highlight the hidden environmental cost of artificial intelligence.

Previous warnings have come from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, and environmental activist Erin Brockovich, immortalised by Julia Roberts on screen, has also joined the debate, highlighting the impact of AI data centres on local water supplies.

According to researchers, the situation is likely to worsen before it improves.

Day-to-day use of AI models accounts for 80–90% of their total energy demand, with image generation requiring far more power than text queries, and high-resolution video demanding even greater resources.

In addition, the pressure created by data centres is far from evenly distributed. In some countries and regions, these facilities are already placing additional strain on electricity grids and drawing heavily on limited water supplies.

The 56-page UNU-INWEH report reveals that data centres processing chatbot queries, AI-generated images, and machine learning tools require billions of litres of water to operate. Many of these data centres are located in areas that are already experiencing drought or water stress, and there is often limited transparency regarding the resources they consume.

To illustrate the scale of this issue, it is estimated that global data centres used 448 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2025. Generating that electricity required around 4.5 trillion litres of water, or enough to fill approximately 1.8 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. By 2030, this figure could increase to 9.3 trillion litres, which is enough to meet the basic annual water needs of approximately 1.3 billion people living in sub-Saharan Africa.

The report cites Google’s data centre in Mesa, Arizona, as an example. Despite warnings from local water authorities about the region’s chronic drought and repeated shortages since 2022, the facility was authorised to use up to 5.5 million cubic metres of water per year. A quantity that can cover the needs of hundreds of thousands of people. Google has reportedly considered expanding its presence in the region regardless.

“Is the increase in tax revenue and the relatively paltry number of jobs worth the water?” asked Kathryn Sorensen, former director of Mesa’s water department and professor at Arizona State University. This issue is further compounded by evidence that, while switching to renewables reduces carbon emissions, it can sometimes increase water consumption.

Spain tells a similar story. Amazon’s planned data centres in Aragon are licensed to use approximately 755,720 cubic metres of water per year, enough to irrigate 200 hectares of corn, and they are projected to consume more electricity than the entire region currently uses. Three-quarters of Spain’s territory is already at risk of desertification.

The UN is now calling for urgent action, outlining a framework for a responsible AI ecosystem that uses resources wisely, takes local environmental realities into account, and commits to standardised, transparent reporting of energy, water, land and carbon footprints.

On Thursday, 11 June 2026, the Brussels government voted to ban shared e-scooters from Belgium’s capital as of 2027. A multitude of accidents, parking hassles, and other issues were at the basis of the decision.

Although they were initially welcomed as a creative new means of transportation within the city, shared e-scooters have quickly become a cause for concern within Brussels. Over the course of 2025, not only were 666 people injured in the Brussels-Capital region in accidents involving e-scooters (up 25% from 2024), but many people also complained about carelessly parked scooters, and according to Brussels public prosecutor Julien Moinil, e-scooters were used in 25 Brussels shootings throughout the year.

With the ongoing contracts of shared e-scooter providers Bolt and Dott coming to expire at the end of 2026, the Brussels government took the decision not to renew those and to effectively ban shared e-scooters from the Belgian capital starting from 2027.

We have BIG news!
Bolt scooters and e-bikes are now available in 200 cities across Europe, up from the 170 cities that we had at the beginning of the year! pic.twitter.com/5uEKPuxRW9
— Bolt (@boltapp) June 2, 2022

‘Anyone who falls off a scooter is more likely to be injured than someone who falls off a bicycle, and haphazardly parked share scooters make pavements even more difficult to navigate for people with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs or the elderly. This decision goes beyond safety alone; it is about choosing a city with enough alternatives to get around quickly and efficiently. That is why share bikes will remain, and we are giving Villo! a long-awaited update,” said Mobility Minister Elke Van den Brandt in an interview with Brussels news outlet BRUZZ.

While Bolt and Dott are disappointed by the ban, the decision is being widely applauded, and the absence of shared e-scooters is likely to create momentum for shared (e-)bikes. Brussels bike-sharing platform Villo! is currently managed by JCDecaux until September 2028. Afterwards, a new system is likely to be set up, based on the same principle of fixed docking stations across all Brussels neighbourhoods.

“The decision to ban share scooters from the streets of Brussels is clear and sound policy. By retaining share bikes, we are reconciling individual travel with public order,” Brussels PM Boris Dilliès commented.

Shared e-scooters elsewhere

The news comes at a moment when shared e-scooters are being restricted and criticised within Belgium. In May 2026, for example, Antwerp hospital group ZAS asked to ban shared e-scooters between midnight and 8:00 am, as nightly accidents tend to be more serious. Moreover, Belgian Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke pushed for a new law making the wearing of a helmet compulsory for e-scooters, which are able to exceed 20 kilometres per hour. The new rule should go into effect as of September 2026, but is unlikely to affect shared e-scooters, as providers will probably lower their speed limit.

No more e-scooter rentals in Prague as authorities prioritise safety and accessibility

On a global scale, Brussels will not be the first city to ban shared e-scooters. Previously, destinations including Paris, Madrid, Melbourne, and Prague have made the same decisions based on similar concerns, while others, such as Rome and Copenhagen, have introduced strict rules to limit their damage and nuisance.

Brussels Airport is continuing its efforts to become more environmentally friendly and has launched a new call for projects to support local initiatives that benefit both people and nature.

Now in its fourth year, the Brussels Airport Fund is inviting applicants to submit their ideas by 16 September 2026 for a chance to receive financial support of up to €10,000.

Since its establishment in 2023 by Brussels Airport and management by the King Baudouin Foundation, the fund has supported 42 projects, totalling €362,000.

© Brussels Airport

Applications for the 2027 grants are open to organisations with projects that benefit the community and/or the environment. Schools, sports clubs, NGOs, neighbourhood associations, and youth groups can all apply as long as their projects demonstrate a positive impact on areas such as nature, the environment, social cohesion, green mobility, circularity, energy, or a combination of these.

The only requirement is that the project must be distinct from the applicant’s regular activities. For instance, a school could not apply for funding to cover the costs of its regular lessons or maintenance work, but it could submit a project proposal to establish a community garden, launch a biodiversity initiative or develop a circular economy programme involving pupils and local residents.

© Brussels Airport

Previous beneficiaries include Nido in Haren, an inclusive care garden which used its grant to install mobile relaxation areas and build a terrace where people with reduced mobility can enjoy a coffee break during vegetable gardening workshops.

Another supported initiative is the Borrekensveld neighbourhood park in Grimbergen, which opened in 2025. Designed with local residents in mind, the recreational area has been completely revamped and transformed into a sustainable green space that is accessible to people of all ages.

Once the application period closes, an independent jury will analyse all submissions and select the winning projects. However, the beneficiaries will have to wait until early 2027 to receive the good news.

This initiative comes as Brussels Airport continues to invest in its long-term development. Following record revenues of €828 million in 2025, a 6% increase on 2024, the airport announced €302 million in infrastructure investments, including projects aimed at improving sustainability and ensuring the long-term viability of its operations.

Brussels Airport launches final Stargate phase with self-driving shuttles and green energy innovations

Beyond the Brussels Airport Fund, the airport has also adopted more unconventional methods to support biodiversity. Since 2019, for example, a flock of around 200 sheep has been brought in every summer to act as natural lawnmowers, maintaining the grass-covered noise barriers that protect Steenokkerzeel residents from noise pollution.

This approach helps to manage the airport’s grassland verges in a more ecological way than traditional mowing and encourages long-term biodiversity. In 2024, the flock grazed through 18,500 square metres of land, the equivalent of almost three football pitches, in just two weeks.

With safety in mind, the airport’s “loyal friends”, as they were referred to in a social media post, only graze outside the secured area of the airport, far from the tarmac and aircraft operations.

Get ready to be dazzled: Brussels is doing its spring clean, with no bench, litter bin or road sign being left untouched.

In preparation for the summer season, the City of Brussels has initiated an extensive clean-up campaign to refresh the capital. Over the next 10 days, public workers and cleaning crews will fan out across the centre to scrub bollards, cycle racks, drinking fountains, lampposts, flower boxes, kiosks, and even public toilets – though one might hope those receive attention a little more regularly.

Nothing is being overlooked in the campaign initiated by Anas Ben Abdelmoumen (PS), Brussels councilman for Public Cleanliness. Street furniture, walls, stickers and graffiti are all in the firing line of the city’s recently acquired superheated water and steam-cleaning machines.

For lovers of street art and photography, this may be the moment to rush out and capture that mural or tagged doorway you spotted the other day, before it disappears beneath clouds of industrial steam.

“We have noticed that simply sweeping or removing dirt is not enough”, Ben Abdelmoumen’s spokesperson, Andreas De Kerpel, told the Brussels Times. “Steam cleaning is a very effective technique for removing tags and stickers, which is why the city has invested in new steam-cleaning machines. Summer is coming, and more people will be visiting the city centre. Naturally, it needs to look tidy.”

De Kerpel acknowledged that the current state of many benches, which are covered in tags and stickers, creates a sense of neglect and sometimes even a feeling of insecurity. However, he insisted that the goal was not simply to erase graffiti, but rather to refresh the entire cityscape by “cleaning everything with steam and superheated water so that it looks like new again”. He also emphasised in his interview with the paper that the operation was intended to encourage residents to show greater respect for public spaces and street furniture by sending a clear signal.

Graffiti, dismissed by some as vandalism and defended by others as street art, seems to be a primary target of the campaign.

However, many artists might see the clean-up as providing a new blank canvas waiting to be claimed. Part of its appeal lies precisely in its impermanence, reflecting the moods, trends and frustrations of the moment rather than turning it into a frozen open-air museum piece.

The works have already begun, and, according to the Brussels Times, the first results are already visible along the central pedestrian areas.

The entire operation is expected to cost at least €40,000 and is being carried out in partnership with an external company as part of a pilot project.

“The idea is to organise this kind of action regularly, several times a year,” explained De Kerpel.

If the results are convincing, the campaign could return later this year. Otherwise, Brussels residents and tourists alike will have to continue navigating a city where the graffiti sometimes reflects their political mood and sometimes does not.

Mexico City is sinking so fast that the phenomenon that can be seen from space, scientists have revealed, using NASA satellite imagery to track the rate at which the North American megalopolis is subsiding.

It has been known for around 100 years that the Mexican capital is dropping into a basin surrounded by mountains. The city sits on an ancient lakebed of permeable rock and sand, and as water has been pumped out of this aquifer to supply millions of city residents with something to drink, the land has been sinking. Massive urban development has only added more weight to the problem. Over the years, roads, buildings, and water lines have all shown the strain. The Angel of Independence, a statue that has stood on the Paseo de la Reforma since 1910, commemorating the country’s independence, has required 14 steps to be added to its base as the surrounding ground falls away.

The ground beneath Mexico City is slowly sinking, and now, the NISAR satellite can track it from space.

New data shows parts of the city (in blue) that sank more than half an inch (more than 2 cm) per month from Oct. 2025 to Jan. 2026. pic.twitter.com/5uDM1B9Mwx
— NASA Earth (@NASAEarth) April 29, 2026

Now, powerful technology in the form of NISAR, a Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, is also illustrating just how bad the subsidence is, to the centimetre. Launched on July 30, 2025, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India’s southeastern coast, the initiative is a collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The satellite is the first to carry two SAR instruments at different wavelengths. It is monitoring Earth’s land and ice twice every 12 days, collecting data using a giant drum-shaped reflector, 12 metres wide — the largest radar antenna reflector NASA has ever sent into space. These measurements of changes to the Earth’s surface include real-time tracking of ground subsidence, glacial retreat, shifting tectonic plates, and wildfire spread.

The analysis of the Mexico City issue is initially based on NISAR data from between October 2025 and January 2026, during the dry season. Parts of the region have been found to be subsiding by more than 2 cm per month—an astonishing 24 cm at least every year, the size of a standard business envelope or a tablet device.

“Mexico City is a well-known hot spot when it comes to subsidence, and images like this are just the beginning for NISAR,” said David Bekaert, of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research in Belgium and the NISAR science team, in a statement that noted: “We’re going to see an influx of new discoveries from all over the world given the unique sensing capabilities of NISAR and its consistent global coverage.”

Those discoveries are expected to assist humans in tracking disasters, monitoring ecosystems and crops, studying ice sheets, and understanding how Earth’s surface moves and changes. This, in turn, could protect lives, support the management of natural resources, and offer a deeper understanding of our changing planet than ever before.

Greece has increased the number of beaches where sunbeds and other commercial activities are banned, as part of efforts to protect its coastline. Around 250 beaches across the country have now been given “untouched” status by the authorities. This means that these coastlines are kept as natural as possible, without the presence of rented equipment or large tourist infrastructure. The decision was announced jointly by the country’s financial and environmental ministries and comes ahead of the busy summer season.

On these protected beaches, businesses are no longer allowed to place sunbeds, umbrellas, tables or chairs for commercial use. Visitors will not be able to rent water sports equipment such as jet skis, pedalos or kayaks either. Loud music, large organised events and cars driving on the sand are also prohibited. However, the beaches remain open to the public, and small mobile stands selling drinks and snacks are still allowed to operate.

The aim of these measures is to protect Greece’s natural environment and preserve the beauty of its coastlines. Many of the selected beaches are home to important ecosystems, including rare plants and animals. Authorities say that increasing pressure from tourism, combined with the effects of climate change, has made stronger protection necessary. By limiting human impact, the government hopes to maintain these areas in their natural state for future generations.

A number of the beaches included in the ban are part of the Natura 2000 network, a European system of protected areas. This programme is designed to safeguard habitats and species that are considered valuable or at risk. On these beaches, the rules are even stricter, as any activity that could change the natural shape of the coastline or harm its ecological function is not allowed. This also means that hotels cannot create private beach sections or build permanent structures nearby.

The Natura 2000 network in Greece.

The protected beaches are spread across many parts of Greece, including islands and mainland regions. Locations such as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Lefkada and the Cyclades are all included. The island of Leipsoi stands out, as it has the highest number of untouched beaches in the country, with more than 20. Another well-known example is Elafonissi Beach in Crete, famous for its pink sand created by crushed seashells.

For tourists, the new rules mean a slightly different beach experience. Instead of renting a sunbed, visitors will need to bring their own towel or sit directly on the sand. While this may reduce comfort for some, it also offers a quieter and more natural setting. Travellers who prefer organised beaches with full services can still find them elsewhere in Greece, as the restrictions only apply to selected locations.

The move is part of a wider strategy to tackle overtourism and promote more sustainable travel. Greece has faced growing concerns about overcrowded beaches and uncontrolled development in recent years. By introducing stricter rules, the country aims to strike a better balance between tourism and nature protection.

To help visitors navigate the changes, authorities have also introduced tools such as the MyCoast app, which shows which beaches are protected. This allows travellers to plan ahead and choose the type of beach experience they prefer. Similar measures are being considered in other European destinations, showing a wider shift towards more sustainable coastal tourism.

Costa Rica has launched a digital platform designed to raise awareness of its oceans and their importance. The “Costa Rica Azul” or Costa Rica Blue” initiative is a free-to-access resource for students, educators, and the wider public.

“Costa Rica Blue was created out of the need to better understand our oceans and recognize their value,” said Adriana Acosta, Director of the essential COSTA RICA country brand. She explained: “We believe that knowledge is the first step toward protection, and this platform seeks precisely that: to bring this knowledge to more people—especially younger generations—through an accessible and interactive experience.”

The platform invites users to take part in an immersive introduction to Costa Rican waters, plunging them among the more than 7,000 marine species recorded in the country’s waters and providing information on each one and its ideal habitat, including details such as the water temperatures and pressures the creatures prefer. Key facts and figures about coral reefs and seamounts can also be discovered, as well as alerts on the risks of overfishing.

@esencialcostarica
¿A cuál nivel llegaste? Contanos Seguí explorando en nuestra plataforma interactiva Costa Rica Azul. #CostaRicaAzul #biodiversidadmarina #costarica #océanos
♬ sonido original – esencial Costa Rica OFICIAL

Protecting the ocean is just as important for humans as is it for the creatures who live in it, since oceans generate more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorb nearly 30% of the CO₂ we produce. Costa Rica is on the front line of such environmentally vital work. It is already well known for its protection of forests, national parks, and land-based wildlife, but over 90% of Costa Rica’s territory is ocean; in fact, its marine territory is around 10 times larger than its land area and is home to approximately 3.5% of the world’s reported marine species.

“Costa Rica is a deeply blue country, yet we are not always fully aware of what that means,” Acosta noted, describing the platform as “an invitation to rediscover that richness, to reconnect with our oceans, and to understand that their protection is part of who we are as a country.”

The Costa Rica Blue project was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), to fit well within the national education system. The resources work “in alignment with the Science and Biology curricula for students in lower and upper secondary education across different academic tracks. They serve as a complementary tool to strengthen classroom teaching and learning processes,” said Alfredo Ortega Cordero, Head of the Lower and Upper Secondary Education Department at the MEP Curriculum Development Directorate.
