For the first time since the establishment of the Dinara Nature Park in 2021, Croatia has added a new nature park to its collection. The Zagorje Mountains Nature Park marks the country’s 13^th protected nature reserve, meaning some 38.6% of Croatia’s land surface is now protected.

At a one-hour drive from the Croatian capital Zagreb, the new nature park spans over a surface of 30,000 hectares, including hills, forests, castles, and idyllic villages. It stretches over two counties, Krapina-Zagorje and Varaždin, in Northern Croatia.

“Croatia is known for its coastline and islands, but this new nature park highlights the extraordinary landscapes of our inland regions. The Zagorje Mountains offer a different perspective of Croatia – one of forests, hills, castles and outdoor adventure, and it’s just a short journey from Zagreb,” Bisera Fabrio, director of the Croatian national tourist office in the UK, told Time Out.

Some of the highlights of the newly-created nature park include the 13^th-century Trakošćan Castle, the prehistoric Vindija Cave, the Ravna Gora mountain, and the Ivanščica Mountain.

Standing at 1,061 meters above sea level, Ivanščica is the highest mountain in northwestern Croatia, and a popular spot for outdoor lovers. The area offers both family-friendly hikes and trails for those who are keen on adventure. The so-called Pyramid on the mountain, an iron tower dating back to 1929, offers some of the best views over the region, reaching as far as the Slovenian Alps and Hungary.

The project to turn the Zagorje Mountains into a nature park dates back to 2009, and a final report confirming the region’s outstanding natural value was handed over in 2024. This is further underlined by the fact that part of the new park is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000.

While nature parks are managed less strictly than national parks, thus allowing the daily lives of their inhabitants to continue, all while paying attention to the natural surroundings, as a nature park, the region will have easier access to funding to protect its biodiversity. According to Croatia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, approximately one-fifth of the total Croatian flora can be found within the park, including 1,200 species and subspecies.

While the Croatian city of Split is well-known for its stunning beachfront and historical town, over the years, it has also become a popular nightlife destination. While the beach clubs and bars contribute to the local economy, unruly tourists have become a nuisance for those who live in the neighbourhoods where nightlife is buzzing.

In order to resolve that issue, some of the city’s officials, and in particular Mayor Tomislav Šuta, have submitted a proposal to amend Split’s Trade and Hospitality Act.

“We are moving towards limiting nighttime work in accordance with the new law, with the aim of introducing order. The City of Split will participate in the discussion and public consultation so that we can reach a decision that is important for our residents by consensus”, Split’s mayor Tomislav Šuta told Croatian news outlet Net.hr.

The new proposal aims to regulate alcohol sales hours in certain parts of Split, particularly those with many bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. While nothing would change for such licensed venues, a local alcohol sales ban would apply to liquor shops from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. The mayor hopes that if such a ban were to be applied as soon as the summer of 2026, the quality of life and overall safety would increase for those who live in the targeted areas.

Other initiatives to control nightlife

In some Croatian cities, including Split and Dubrovnik, other initiatives have already been put in place in order to regulate unruly behaviour. For example, drinking alcohol or using drugs in public spaces and urinating or vomiting can already lead to an on-the-spot fine of up to €700. Moreover, fines for public order disturbances such as fighting or verbal abuse can go as high as €4,000.

If the ban on alcohol sales in Split were to go through, the Croatian city would not be the first popular tourist destination to take such an initiative. For example, in the city of Porto in Portugal, supermarkets, wine cellars, convenience stores, and souvenir shops cannot sell alcohol between 9:00 pm and 8:00 am within the city’s so-called ‘containment zone’. Similar to the situation in Split, the initiative was born out of a need to limit street drinking and the associated disturbances.

What’s changed?

The Republic’s Ministry of the Interior states that temporary stays of up to 18 months can be granted, and this can be extended under application no later than 60 days before the current permit expires. Repeat applicants must wait six months before resubmitting a request.

But legislation amended in March 2025 gives digital nomads the right to stay for up to three years, pending full application of the law. “Close family members” can join their partners if they meet certain criteria.

The conditions include being able to provide:

• proof of remote work, for example a contract or service agreement
• self-employed business registration, if applicable
• proof of at least €3,295 in monthly income
• evidence of private health insurance for the duration of any trip to Croatia
• a clean criminal record
• a passport with validity exceeding the length of the stay in Croatia by three months
• confirmed accommodation details and proof of address within three days of entering the country.

How much does it cost and is it worth it?

The fee for Croatia’s digital nomad visa varies depending on where the application is made. It is cheaper to do so at a Croatian police administration centre or station, where it costs €46.45 for a temporary stay (around $54), compared to €55.74 (approximately $64) at a diplomatic mission or foreign consulate. There are also administrative fees associated with obtaining biometric residence permits and cards, taking the total to around €189.88 (about $221.07). If it’s urgent, there’s an extra charge for an expedited application.

Aside from its coastal scenery and historic charm, and warm climate, advantages of choosing Croatia as part of a digital nomad adventure include its low cost of living and safety record. When it comes to cost of living, Croatia averages 22.6% cheaper than the United States, according to Numbeo. The US State Department meanwhile officially rates the republic at a Level 1 travel advisory, the lowest risk level possible.

Founded in the 7^th century, the historic port, once dubbed the “the pearl of the Adriatic”, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Now, with screen tourism in the news again following the release of a new season of The White Lotus, in Thailand, Dubrovnik is not keen to step out of the limelight. Having provided the backdrop for such iconic Game of Thrones moments as Cersei Lannister’s season five naked “Walk of Shame”, with the city’s ancient walls almost “a paid actor”, now the city’s seas are now making headlines thanks to diver and underwater builder, Ivan Bukelic, who proudly told press: “I can now say I discovered a boat at the Old Town Dubrovnik.”

He made the find back in April 2025. The wreck was buried around 70cm under the sea bottom. Croatia’s Ministry of Culture was immediately informed and they have been carrying out radiocarbon analyses on fragments of the vesel to ascertain how old it is.

While vessel type and dimensions are unknown, it has been revealed that the mystery ship appears to date back to the 1700s, according to marine archaeologist Irena Radić Rossi. Some are speculating that the vessel likely carried merchant goods given the significance of Dubrovnik as a trading hub.

Plans are now evolving to protect the intriguing shipwreck, just as Dubrovnik itself has required safeguarding from the effects of overtourism. The city became one of the first places to change the way it manages cruise ship arrivals in 2017 when authorities introduced a “Respect the City” scheme to limit cruise ship disembarkations to 4,000 at any one time.

Other shipwrecks in the Adriatic include German and Italian warships, cargo and passengers ships, and fishing vessels. The world’s most valuable shipwreck is thought to be the San Jose, a Spanish galleon carrying an estimated $17 billion in today’s terms, scuppered by British cannons in 1708 – and believed to have been found off the Columbian coast in 2015, with a haul of coins and Chinese porcelain that still lies untouched.

Minister of Tourism and Sport, Tonči Glavina, told the Poslovni svijet s Ilijom Jandrićem podcast that June arrivals were up 11% year-on-year, yielding 19% more overnight stays and with part of the month seeing 25% growth, describing it as a “fantastic” month.

The news comes after a rumoured softening at the end of the first quarter due to a 20% drop in arrivals in March. Glavina emphasised that April then saw +20%, in a similar pattern to June compensating for May’s lower results.

Referring to this as the “pre-season”, he said it’s important to take the figures for the quarter as a whole. “You cannot judge the pre-season month by month,” he said. “As a whole, we are currently up four percent in arrivals and five percent in overnight stays compared to last year.”

But reports are multiplying that rising costs are affecting both tourists and locals. Scrutiny of the cost of essential goods enabled by government-mandated transparency on retail pricing has revealed huge discrepancies in the cost of everyday goods across the country.

Analysis has shown a whopping 10.38% increase in Tribunj, a waterfront village in southern Croatia, where toilet paper is 19.1% more expensive than in Zagreb. What’s more, Tribunj is not an outlier but is joined by a number of other towns with the cost of living up around 10% too, including  Posedarje, Pakoštane and Pomer (10%), and Pašman (9.96%), according to RTL Direkt.

Visitors might want to be aware that food groceries have not seen the same spike in prices. Instead it is household and hygiene products that are going through the roof. While this might be good news for tourists in-the-know who can avoid the highest prices by perhaps bringing a roll of toilet paper or sanitary products with them in their luggage, for locals it is a different story.

“These are basic items people must buy, especially in tourist apartments, and that drives prices even higher,” economist Mladen Vedriš told the Daily Express.

Acknowledging the issue, Glavina noted that while the Croatian market has become more expensive, it still represents good value and that off-peak months are the best time to avoid seasonal inflation. He also directed attention at legislation to safeguard housing and avoid overexploitation that has slashed the number of short-term rental developments by over 70% “We want to protect our most valuable resource – the coast,” he insisted.

Kristjan Staničić, the board’s director emphasised in a statement that “the goal is to improve air connectivity with foreign countries every year. This is especially important for our southern destinations, [that are]more reliant on air transport.” To that end, the tourist board country has allocated more than three million euros for strategic partnerships, including cooperation with airlines, this year alone, producing what the board described as “record” results.

The summer season will see 54 different airlines flying to and from Croatia, with the skies dominated by Croatia Airlines, Ryanair, Easyjet, Eurowings and Lufthansa. In terms of direct routes, 42 will be available “mainly from Europe” the agency announced, adding that “connections with destinations on other continents are planned, for example, for the USA, Canada, Korea, Qatar, UAE.”

Expanding the season to improve accessibility

Interestingly, as well as a mission to “actively encourage launch of new unique connections” the tourist board noted a strategy to “ensure an earlier start” since, in the words of Staničić, “air connectivity is extremely important outside the peak season because of the better accessibility of our destinations.”

The board director may have been referring to the fact that stunning medieval cities such as Dubrovnik, that offer limited access due to their coastal position, walled fortifications, and narrow Old Town streets, tend to dominate the tourist imagination, resulting in summer crowding. That’s despite the wealth of other attractions Croatia can offer both sunseekers and active holidaymakers thanks to its pristine Adriatic coastline, over 1,000 idyllic islands, plus hiking in its forests and national parks.

Hvar – located in the Adriatic Sea, about an hour-long ferry ride from Split – is known among tourists as a ‘party island’ and a popular nightlife destination. During the high season, it welcomes up to 20,000 tourists daily. However, residents have grown frustrated with disruptive visitors and the disturbances they cause. As a result, the town has voted to introduce a new set of summer rules.

These include an 85-decibel noise restriction – roughly the volume of a noisy restaurant. The decision will directly affect many clubs, discos, and outdoor venues on the island. Fines are set at €1,320 for legal businesses and €300 for individuals.

The hospitality sector immediately attempted to overturn the decision by lobbying for the island to be designated a year-round entertainment zone, according to local news site CroatiaWeek.

“Hotels, local apartment owners, bars, restaurants, taxi drivers, boat operators, and many others rely heavily on the vibrant atmosphere that Hvar has cultivated over decades. Curtailing this energy jeopardises their livelihoods and, inevitably, the overall wellbeing of the local community. Many of these are small, independent businesses that simply don’t have the resources to absorb such a drastic shift. For them, this decision could prove financially unsustainable”, Ivan Curkovic, owner of beach club Carpe Diem, tells Metro UK.

However, local authorities and those supporting a less nightlife-oriented type of tourism are standing by the decision, hoping to promote a family-friendly and sustainable tourism model.

Tourism measures in Croatia

Hvar’s decision to step up against unruly tourists isn’t an isolated one. Across Croatia, authorities are pushing for a more qualitative kind of tourism, benefiting local residents.

Towns such as Split and Dubrovnik have issued fines of up to €700 for “inappropriate behaviour”, which may include drinking alcohol or using drugs in public spaces, urinating or vomiting in public, and walking through towns shirtless or in swimwear.

Public order offences fall under another category and can result in fines of up to €4,000. Fighting, verbal abuse, and drunken behaviour are included in this group. Removing a noble pen shell – a protected endemic clam – from the sea or beach will incur a fine of €67 per item.

“These fines are intended more to deter bad behaviour rather than to punish anyone. Ultimately, it is about being responsible, ensuring Croatia remains a cherished, safe, and welcoming destination for everyone”, Darijo Šarić, CEO of luxury villa rental site VIP Holiday Booker, told Euronews.

1. Roasted Turkey with ‘mlinci’ 

Turkey with ‘mlinci’ (purica sa mlincima) is a classic, traditional Croatian cuisine, especially in Zagreb and northern Croatia. And while roasted turkey is well known in many different cuisines, ‘mlinci’ are a Croatian specialty – the thin, usually homemade, dried flatbread is broken in pieces and then mixed with the juices of the roasted turkey. ‘Mlinci’ become soft and delicious, carrying somewhat the turkey flavour, ideally complimenting the meat. Turkey with ‘mlinci’ is usually served at family gatherings and holidays and in Zagreb and northern Croatia it has also become a trademark of a Christmas meal. 

No need to wait for Christmas though – when in Zagreb, treat yourself to the tastiest turkey with ‘mlinci’ at the iconic restaurant Vinodol in the city center.

2. Istrian ‘fuži’

There are many delicacies from the Istria Peninsula that we would recommend and ‘fuži’ are definitely at the top of our list. Once regarded in Istria as a ‘poor man’s everyday meal’ the homemade, twirly pasta is now considered a delicacy and served in some of the best restaurants in Croatia. ‘Fuži’ go best with different types of sauces, called ‘šug’, which is usually made from seafood, octopus or beef, such as the traditional Istrian beef ‘boškarin’. There are also countless vegetarian versions depending on the season – ‘fuži’ are delicious with wild asparagus or truffles that Istria is also very well known for. Whichever version you try, we guarantee you will enjoy it!

For an authentic experience, in Zagreb we can recommend fuži with truffles at Istrian restaurant ‘Vodnjanka’.

3. Čobanac – Slavonian shepherd stew

Čobanac, or ‘the shepherd stew’, is a traditional dish from Slavonia, the eastern part of Croatia. Originally created by Slavonian shepherds, who were spending days in forests, the dish consists of beef and pork meat cut in cubes, lots of onions and a variety of vegetables, including paprika peppers to give it a spicy taste. The traditional ‘čobanac’ is prepared in a copper cauldron under natural fire and takes hours to prepare. There is a saying that a you know ‘čobanac’ is good if, when it spills on your clothing, it can’t be removed anymore. 

To taste traditional ‘čobanac’ in Zagreb, visit ‘Baranjska citadela’ – it is a genuine Slavonian experience.

4. Peka

‘Peka’ or ‘under the bell’ is not a dish but a specific, traditional way to prepare a meal – anything that is prepared in this way is so delicious, making your mouth water just on the mention of it. Usually used along the coast in Dalmatia, this traditional way of making specialties includes preparing the food over open flames using a clay or iron bell – hence the name. No matter if you are preparing lamb, veal or octopus, the food will be as tender as you can possibly imagine and develop a specific flavour in the process. Usually accompanied by potatoes and other vegetables, the juices will give the whole meal a distinct flavour. And not to forget – bread made under the bell is a delicacy in itself and definitely something not to miss!

In Zagreb, one of the best places to try ‘peka’ is certainly the well-known restaurant ‘Okrugljak’.

5. ‘Štrukli’

One of most famous and my favourite traditional Croatian dishes is definitely ‘štrukli’. Originally coming from the northern part of Croatia, Zagorje, ‘štrukli’ dishes have the double role of both main course as well as the dessert. The tasty dough is filled with fresh, creamy cheese, making the perfect combination to enjoy. You can have them sweet or salty, boiled or baked. There are many add-ons to štrukli, like different types of fruit, such as blueberries  or cherries, and the baked ‘štrukli’ go very well with a bit of sour cream on the side.

Some of the most delicious ‘štrukli’ in Zagreb can be found at ‘La Štruk’, a small restaurant specialised in ‘štrukli’. Just watch out not to burn your tongue – they come hot, straight from the oven!

Located just across famous historical city Zadar, strangely enough, Dugi otok is still a jewel to be discovered by many. And though there are tourists visiting its gorgeous beaches, the crowds are not as close to crowds on some other islands, and you can always find a small beach to yourself. With villages spread across this long island (which is actually a literal translation of the Croatian name of the island – Dugi otok), you will enjoy the authentic Mediterranean. Driving across the island most beautiful views will open in front of you – it is almost surreal. Don’t miss to visit the Veli Rat lighthouse at one end of the island, you will enjoy the scenery and relax, soaking in sun, breeze, salty air and all the soothing sounds of the island.

There are many gorgeous beaches across the island, and, while a lot of people enjoy Saharun for its fine, white sand, and you actually can’t miss wherever you go for swimming on this beautiful island, the absolute winner is for sure Dragon’s Eye. Though not technically a beach but rather a sea cave, kind of a secluded pool naturally built by rocks the Dragon’s Eye is one of the most unique places you’ll see. And the feeling of swimming in a calm sea pool while the waves are crashing against the rocks is incredible, being in such a setting is something you will never forget.

The pristine nature of Dugi otok will just blow you away – the clear, blue sea, mighty cliffs and Mediterranean greenery are the perfect combination for relaxation and reenergizing. And though the nature is beautiful all over the island, the special nature haven to visit is certainly Nature Park Telašćica that, besides incredible cliffs that rise over 200 m tall and picturesque Telašćica bay also holds salt lake ‘Mir’. The Nature Park spreads not only on Dugi otok but also encompasses thirteen little islands around so, if you are lucky and with a boat, be sure to visit at least some of them.

One of my favourite things in Telašćica is for sure the Donkey sanctuary, a shelter for abandoned donkeys where they found their sanctuary. The noble animal is one of the symbols of the Adriatic coast as they have been helping people with their hard work throughout history. However, with the industry and technology evolving, the need for donkeys diminished and so did unfortunately their numbers. It is truly a special experience seeing so many of them together, enjoying their well-deserved rest.

Everything on Dugi otok is in line with nature, even the architecture. Besides the charming Dalmatian stone houses, one of the best examples is the recently opened, luxurious Villa Nai 3.3. From the 1^st of January this year, border controls between Croatia and the other countries in the Schengen area were lifted. The country started issuing Schengen visas and was able to make full use of the Schengen Information System. From the same date, Croatia was the twentieth state where payments can be made with the euro. Checks at internal air borders were lifted from the 26^th of March, given the need for this to coincide with the dates of IATA’s summer/winter time schedule.

In terms of flights, planes departing from Croatia to other Schengen countries are now treated as domestic. Passengers on direct flights from Croatia to destinations within the Schengen Area and vice versa can exit their flight without being required to go through the border or police controls.

I am confident that these successes will pave the way for other member states who fulfill the conditions to take the next step in their European journeys.

According to data from the State Bureau of Statistics (DZS), the country welcomed 2 million tourists in the first four months of the year, a 30.4% increase compared to the same period last year. There were 5.3 million overnight stays, representing a growth of 19.6%. The majority of arrivals and overnight stays are attributed to foreign tourists, with 1.4 million arrivals and 4 million overnight stays recorded in the first four months. This represents a growth of 37.1% and 22.1%, respectively, compared to the same months in 2022.

Slovenians accounted for the highest share of foreign overnight stays at 17.1%, followed by Germans at 16% and Austrians at 11.4%. Italians and British tourists represented 10% each in terms of overnight stays. According to the Dubrovnik Times, the number of overnight stays from these countries was higher than in the first four months of 2022.

In April of 2023, Germans and Slovenians accounted for the highest number of overnight stays. Then came Austrians, British, and Polish tourists. All of them had more overnight stays compared to April last year, as reported by the Dubrovnik Times. For the same month, hotels reported the highest number of overnight stays. They represented more than 45% of the total or 1.4 million overnight stays. This is a 26% increase compared to the same month last year.

Despite the positive numbers in tourism and the revenue it generates, most Croatians are struggling to keep up with prices driven by inflation.
