At the Arab Air Carriers’ Organization (AACO) annual general meeting in Doha, the association representing 39 Middle East and North African airlines predicted a net loss of $4.3 billion (€3.82 billion) in 2026 and a 5.2% decline in air cargo traffic. Although the body expects the sector to remain profitable overall for the year, “ongoing operational disruptions” and “exposure to conflict-affected markets” are pressuring margins.

Held under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, and hosted by Qatar Airways in Doha, day two of AACO’s 59th AGM discussed the aviation industry’s outlook, shared challenges and strategic priorities, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in shaping the future of air transport.

The surge in global fuel prices that has occurred since the US-Israel war on Iran and subsequent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is a big factor. The industry as a whole is expected to make less money than it has done for 12 years, with fuel accounting for 31.4% of operating costs, compared to 25.4% in 2025. But for AACO airlines, the figure is much higher, 37.3% (up from 27.9%) – a 9-point rise in the Middle East versus the overall sector’s 6 points.

With four million jobs and the sector’s $290 billion (€258 billion) contribution to the regional economy at stake, Hamad Al-Khater, CEO of host Qatar Airways Group Chief CEO, said the solution lies in partnership working: “As our industry faces a very difficult period, with geopolitical developments continuing to disrupt global connectivity, regional cooperation has become our greatest strength,” he said.

One policy area in particular where Middle East airlines believe pulling together will ease the financial pressure on them is lobbying against the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS). International flights arriving in Europe from destinations within 5,000 km will be required to pay for their CO2 emissions starting in 2029, under new rules put forward by the European Commission earlier this year. The proposal has intensified complaints from the global aviation industry about taking responsibility for their planet-warming activity.

Abdul Wahab Teffaha, AACO’s Secretary General, speaking to Euronews Travel, pointed to the Arab region’s existing obligations under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and said already-strained Arab carriers could end up paying twice unless the two systems recognise each other and align.

In rhetoric that signals heightening tension over the issue, Teffaha said the expansion of ETS was a matter of “sovereignty” and that the EU’s attempt to broaden the system’s scope was “extra-territoriality, trespassing on the sovereignty of others.” He added: “And that applies for all the countries within the 5,000 kilometres, which are basically, we start from Turkey, through Iraq, down till Dubai, up until Sudan, Egypt, up to Morocco.”

More diplomatically, Sheikh Jassim Fahad Al-Thani, VP of Aeropolitical and Corporate Affairs at Qatar Airways, told the outlet Europe is “a key market” and highlighted the connectivity win-win of the airline’s increased European schedules to major international hubs such as London and Frankfurt that “give travellers more flexibility and better connections through Doha to our global network.”

The threats mainly targeted low-cost carriers and flights to or from Bulgaria, Czechia and Italy. In Bulgaria, three Ryanair flights bound for Sofia, from Madrid, Copenhagen and London Stansted, were escorted by fighter jets. The London flight was diverted to Plovdiv. In Prague, four flights operated by Ryanair, easyJet and Sky Express received threats sent by email from anonymous addresses, according to the airport. No explosives were found. “We perceive the credibility of the threats as low,” Czech police said, adding that all necessary security measures had nonetheless been activated.

In Italy, a Finnair flight from Helsinki was escorted into Rome Fiumicino by Italian Air Force jets and landed normally. A Wizz Air flight from Milan to Warsaw was diverted to Vienna. A second Wizz Air service, from Milan to Bucharest, landed safely and was inspected on arrival. Flights from Thessaloniki and Porto to Milan Malpensa were also targeted.

Elsewhere, a second Finnair flight, from Helsinki to Vienna, landed as planned. Austrian police said Vienna Airport had received an email with a threat aimed at four flights. A LOT Polish Airlines flight from Warsaw to Brussels also landed as scheduled, and the airline said no suspicious items were found. In Denmark, police searched two aircraft at Copenhagen Airport.

Thursday marks the third day of bomb alerts on European flights this week. On Monday, a Wizz Air flight from London to Sofia was diverted to Budapest. On Tuesday, around ten flights were targeted, leading to a brief closure of Warsaw airport and the scrambling of air force jets near Rome. In total, more than 20 hoax threats have been reported since Monday, at least seven of them involving Ryanair. No explosives have been found on any aircraft.

The UK government has described the incidents as malicious hoaxes. Marco Chan, an aviation expert at Kingston University, told the BBC that the threats were “most likely a hoax, but the system is right to treat it as real”.

The origin and motives behind the threats remain unknown. The wave comes as Europe faces a growing number of hybrid attacks, some of which authorities have linked to Russia or Iran. Recent incidents include cyberattacks on supermarket refrigeration systems in several countries, drone incursions, and fake warnings sent through hacked public alert apps in Russia and Ukraine.

Ryanair said it would use AI mainly to make its operations, office and support teams more productive. According to O’Leary, the technology has already helped the airline increase capacity by 4%. He added that, thanks to AI, current managers can now handle more work with the same resources, so the airline needs fewer middle managers and has cut back its graduate programme. Ryanair is also slowing down the recruitment of new pilots and cabin crew.

The idea of pay freezes could lead to a conflict with unions. The Unite union said it had not been told about any such plans and that its multi-year agreements did not depend on the company’s results. The Irish Airline Pilots’ Association also rejected the idea, saying other airlines pay their pilots much more despite facing the same fuel costs.

The main reason for these measures is the conflict in the Middle East, which has pushed oil prices up. At the same time, Ryanair’s fuel hedging, contracts that fix fuel prices in advance, will soon offer less protection. The airline has fixed the price of 80% of its fuel until the end of March at $67 a barrel, but it must buy the other 20% at market rates, which have roughly doubled to about $130 a barrel. O’Leary warned that, unless the conflict ends quickly, fuel prices will “remain elevated well into 2027”.

Ryanair expects short-haul fares in Europe to rise significantly next year, although it says higher prices will not be enough to cover the full cost increase. This is not the first warning: last month in Brussels, O’Leary said travellers would face “the biggest increase in airfares in history” in 2027. He explained that many airlines had failed to protect themselves against the fuel crisis caused by the US-Israel war on Iran, and that mergers and bankruptcies would reduce the number of available seats, which could push European fares up by 10% to 20%.

It is hard to be precise about the exact impact of the industrial action, since workers in Spain are not legally obliged to tell their employers if they will join in or not. However, the atmosphere around the country is reportedly febrile, with widespread discontent about purchasing power and the provision of public services making itself felt. It’s worth remembering too that the strike preparations follow violent protests in neighbouring France. Travel advice from some governments, including the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, includes warnings about staying away from demonstrations, political gatherings, or marches.

Airport and airline operations are likely to be halted by the absence of ground staff, air traffic controllers, and cabin crews. Buses and metro lines will be offering, at best, a minimum skeleton service, and trains too, including the Renfe and high-speed operations that were involved in a horrific collision near Toledo on 28 October, which has caused public grief and anger.

The difficulties facing travellers will probably extend beyond public transport, as commuters who would usually use other means spill onto the roads. Also spilling onto the streets will be a series of protest marches up and down the country, which are expected to bring parts of major cities like Barcelona and Madrid to a standstill.

Tourist stays will also be affected by the potential shutdown of museums, galleries, restaurants, shops, and accommodation providers, which “may close or operate with limited holiday hours if staff join the walkout,” according to a roundup in the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

To avoid disruption or disappointment, visitors to Spain are advised to check their travel schedule for any details of cancellations ahead of time with their carrier and airport, as well as checking any private insurance policy terms. Southwest Airlines, for example, requires laptops weighing 0.9 kg or more to be placed under the seat or in an overhead bin during taxiing, take-off and landing, a measure meant not only to protect the devices, but also other passengers from flying objects during turbulence.

Accessibility, however, is of paramount importance when it comes to battery fires.

In October 2025, a United Airlines flight from Washington to Rome was forced to make a U-turn after a passenger’s laptop slipped behind a cabin panel and into an inaccessible part of the aircraft.

The main danger comes from lithium-ion batteries, which can enter “thermal runaway” and potentially catch fire. Here, a quick reaction can make all the difference. Passengers spotting a device “overheating, expanding, smoking, or burning” should not hesitate and should immediately report it to cabin crew.

The rules do not apply to laptops only. They include mobile phones and tablets, watches and calculators, but also electronic products such as toothbrushes, razors, kids’ toys and drones.  

Brussels Airlines, for instance, permits up to 15 battery-powered devices per passenger, normally limited to 100 watt-hours (Wh) per device for lithium-ion batteries, or 2 g lithium content (LC) for lithium-metal batteries. Devices between 100 and 160 Wh require prior approval.

The airline recommends carrying them in hand luggage, protected from shocks and unintentional activation, with devices separated by clothing or packaging. Batteries may be removed and connections isolated to prevent short-circuiting.

Additional precautions apply to checked luggage, where a maximum of three devices larger than a smartphone are permitted. All must be switched off completely, with alarms and preset activation functions disabled, and kept away from flammable items.

Finally, it demands that all portable electronic devices be visible and accessible at all times when connected to the power supply system of the aircraft.

Power banks, meanwhile, are subjected to separate regulations and must travel in the cabin.

Finally, putting your laptop in an easily accessible bag with a dedicated, padded compartment might be the safest option when it cannot be kept within reach.

Such bags will not prevent fires, but they avoid having to rummage through an entire bag in an emergency, potentially setting other contents alight. Some fire-resistant pouches have up to three protective layers designed to tamp down flames.

Again, they are not immune to fire, but they can buy precious time.

Ultimately, following airline rules cannot eliminate the risk, but it can help ensure an incident is brought under control as quickly as possible.

Wizz Air flight 4302 left London Luton Airport at 8:33 am local time on Monday 2 November and was due to arrive at Sofia in Bulgaria approximately three hours later, at 1:25 pm local time. However, a mid-air bomb threat forced the pilot to divert the plane while flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina for an emergency landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International, where it touched down at 12:09 pm local time.

“Wizz Air confirms that today’s London Luton-Sofia flight was diverted to Budapest following a bomb threat received during the flight. The aircraft diverted and landed safely at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport in accordance with the relevant security protocols and procedures, before taxiing to a designated stand, where the relevant authorities carried out the necessary security checks on the aircraft and passengers,” a Wizz Air spokesperson stated. 

After receiving the bomb threat, as the pilot requested permission to land at Budapest airport, the local military forces immediately took action. According to the Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, a Hungarian Gripen fighter jet left within minutes in order to safely accompany the plane to its emergency landing spot. 

“Hungary’s air defence readiness service has once again proved itself in a real-life situation. A Wizz Air flight travelling from London to Sofia received a bomb threat, forcing it to abandon its original route and request permission to land at Budapest’s International Airport. NATO’s air defence readiness service issued an ALPHA alert. A Hungarian Defence Forces Gripen fighter jet was airborne within minutes and ensured the passenger aircraft landed safely in Budapest. The fighter jet then returned to its base in Kecskemet, while the police took over further measures. Readiness is not a routine, but a responsibility,” Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said about the incident in a Facebook post.

Once the plane had arrived at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International, the plane was directed to a designated parking position. Firefighters, police officers, and counter-terrorism personnel took over and started to inspect both the passengers and the aircraft in order to determine whether or not the bomb threat was real. 

During the inspection, Budapest’s second runway was temporarily closed off, allowing all security measures to be carried out safely. Arriving and departing flights were therefore all diverted to the first runway.

Once the security check was completed, the aircraft was reportedly prepared to be towed to a departure stand. After an extra security screening, passengers were asked to wait in the terminal while the airline searched for a replacement crew so the flight could continue to Sofia, Wizz Air said, according to the Budapest Business Journal.

The airline is cooperating fully with the authorities in order to guarantee the safety of passengers and crew. At the moment of writing, however, authorities have not yet shared more details about the intervention by the police. It is thus unclear whether any suspicious items were found during the inspection.

Global controversy has been building for some time around how online firms that rely on algorithms and data collection might deploy those tools and that information to manipulate users and clients. Just last month, Facebook was ordered to pay a $25-billion fine after a jury decided the social network had intentionally misled the public over 40 million times regarding user data privacy. The Associated Press reports that legislators in at least 30 US jurisdictions have considered new pricing laws in 2026 alone, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Over the summer, the FTC opened a consultation that runs until 21 November, inviting views on a policy to require firms to “clearly and conspicuously disclose” their personalised pricing activities and the data behind it.

Airlines and industry groups like IATA have long pushed for more personalised merchandising, with individual search data and purchase histories gathered and used to tailor offers that are more relevant and appealing to customers. 

But, announcing the FTC investigation, commission chair Andrew Ferguson said its scope would include protecting both consumers and workers, by digging into how fair these practices are, questioning the “opaque methodology that some companies in these industries may be using to determine how much consumers pay or how much gig workers are paid for the same product or service.”

Delta and JetBlue immediately denied any wrongdoing. “JetBlue does not use personal information or web browsing history to set individual pricing. Fares are determined by demand and seat availability, and all customers have access to the same fares on JetBlue.com and our mobile app,” the carrier insisted. Likewise, Delta said its operations had “zero tolerance for discriminatory or predatory pricing and fully comply with applicable privacy, pricing and advertising laws.”

At the time of writing, United had said it was reviewing the FTC request and would respond within the 45-day window.

One man on the ground reportedly suffered a minor leg injury. Some 600 residents of a nearby mobile home community were evacuated.

“I heard and felt the boom,” resident Andrew Mannino told CNN. He described seeing a large black cloud and losing power.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called it a “cataclysmic plane crash”, saying the aircraft “looked like a missile going down”.

Recordings of communications between the crew and air traffic control shed light on the flight’s final minutes.

Initially speaking calmly, a female crew member reported “light, clear ice” that was “manageable”, moderate turbulence and an outside temperature of minus 47°C.

Flying at 35,000 feet, the crew then reported precipitation and requested permission to climb to 37,000 feet, which was granted.

Less than 30 seconds later, the aircraft began descending rapidly. The crew member issued mayday calls, reporting a descent of 10,000 feet per minute.

She then shouted, “We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000 feet per minute”, before warning, “We’re going to crash in the ground!”

According to the flight-tracking data, the Learjet descended 27,000 feet in just one minute before its signal disappeared.

Among those killed were technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, 45, his wife Helen Sharp, 40, and their children Emma, four, and Charlie, two. Also on board were family friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and the children’s nanny, Anita Maria Cetina.

The pilots were Jeff Gregory, 55, and Nathalia Filgueiras, 20. Filgueiras obtained her private pilot’s licence at 17. Her mother told The New York Times that she had been passionate about flying since childhood and loved the freedom it offered.

Investigators are examining several possible causes, including weather conditions, icing and mechanical problems. Scattered thunderstorms were reported along the flight path, but their role, if any, remains unclear.

At a briefing on Monday, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Tom Chapman stressed that it was too early to determine the cause of the crash.

“You all saw what the weather was like here at the surface. What we have to determine is what the weather conditions were like at altitude,” he said.

Investigators have also found indications that the aircraft may have begun breaking apart before impact, with debris scattered across an area measuring approximately half a mile by four-tenths of a mile.

Here is the first media briefing by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the November 1, 2026, Learjet 60 crash in Palm Beach County, Florida. The NTSB will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including possible weather-related factors, particularly the heavy thunderstorms reported in the area. The public is advised not to disturb or move any debris they may find. Maintenance records suggest that a cockpit voice recorder, or “black box”, had been installed, although investigators have yet to establish whether it was still on board or could be recovered.

The crash was the second deadliest US aviation accident of 2026 and the deadliest involving a Learjet 60, according to NTSB records and the Flight Safety Foundation, respectively.

The NTSB has cautioned that establishing the cause will require a lengthy investigation.

The works are described by the airport as “radical and scheduled runway renovation” that will ensure “compliance with rigorous industry regulations” in line with safety commitments by airport manager Gestione Servizi Aeroporti Campani (GESAC).

The airport’s sole runway, adjoining taxiways, and aircraft guidance lighting are all being modernised, as part of works that will take place night and day, every day of the week, during the quieter autumnal period, to keep the closure as short as possible. These efforts are separate from GESAC’s planned €250 million masterplan for a second non-Schengen terminal.

During the shutdown, Salerno Costa d’Amalfi e del Cilento Airport, around 75 km away, will take some displaced services but travellers should check the status of their flight with the airline and airport since Salerno cannot accommodate Naples’ entire traffic volume.

GESAC lists six of the flights switching to Salerno as domestic, (including Bergamo, Milan, Trieste, and Turin) and nine as international destinations, (including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dubai, Paris, and Sharm-el-Sheik. Eurowings’ Düsseldorf and Stuttgart flights are also among those relocating, while Lufthansa Group is redirecting its operations for the month towards Rome Fiumicino, 200 km off. 

Passengers should expect different arrival points and longer transfers than usual. Extra buses between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno airport, more frequent links to Salerno railway station, and trial fixed-fare shared taxis are being laid on in a bid to ease those journeys. Existing connections to the Amalfi Coast and surrounding towns remain available. As well as confirming their arrival and departure airport with their airline, passengers should reassess onward arrangements rather than rely on their original itinerary.

The closure temporarily weakens access to a substantial Italian tourism gateway that handled over 13.2 million passengers in 2025. It could also affect Naples’ events calendar, such as the agrifood festival, Gustus 2026, planned mid-month. Reduced flight choice and extra travelling time could discourage some autumn leisure visitors, leaving local accommodation providers and tourism businesses exposed, even though it’s a quieter season. 

Salerno on the other hand, potentially gains some time in the spotlight. Its airport presents far fewer onward choices than Naples’ 16 domestic connections and 112 international destinations. But, compared to Naples’ infamously chaotic and gritty reputation, smaller Salerno offers a laid-back, often more affordable seaside vibe, and boasts a palm-spangled promenade and medieval charms—as well as shorter transfers to the popular Amalfi coast.

From 30 November, the national flag carrier will start operating flights both ways between the two capital cities on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and Friday afternoons, offering at least 110 seats.

The Brussels debut comes hot on the heels of a planned launch of flights to the Croatian capital, Zagreb, on 26 November 2026. What’s more, a connection to Frankfurt, Germany, will follow on 4 December, as well as Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Podgorica’s trans-Adriatic neighbour, Bari, in Italy, on 17 December.

Twenty years after declaring its independence from Serbia, putting an end to the ersatz rump state of Yugoslavia, Montenegro (and Albania) are heading towards European Union integration. The connectivity surge represents an important step on Montenegro’s journey. An EU delegation led by Austrian MEP Sophia Kircher visited the two countries from 26 to 28 October, with eyes on mobility and transport infrastructure. Kircher said at the time: “Our mission comes at a pivotal moment,” and described transportation as the “key to bringing the Western Balkans closer to the European Union; better connections and more integrated transport systems are essential to strengthening our partnerships with the region.”

With that in mind, Air Montenegro, which bagged all five contracts at a value of around €4.79 million excluding VAT, is being subsidised under a Montenegrin Public Service Obligation (PSO). The scheme allows airlines to be compensated for running connections that are considered vital to local economic and social development but that may be insufficiently profitable without public financial support.

The question mark over profitability may come as a surprise to some observers, given the growing popularity of Montenegro. As travel trends veer towards smaller, lesser-known destinations, and premium personalised experiences, the country’s 300 km of Adriatic coastline and islands, stunning UNESCO-listed mountain and lake scenery, and association with exclusive luxury, are a major draw. The visitor economy represents around 30% of national GDP, and 50% or more of exports, according to Tourism Minister Simonida Kordić.

With such a high dependence on tourism, the country’s stakeholders will welcome recent comments to Travel Tomorrow by European Travel Commission (ETC) director, Eduardo Santander. Speaking on the outlet’s podcast and asked to recommend “one European destination that deserves more attention,” Santander highlighted that Baltic economies are “still suffering” and said: “We just came from Montenegro and they will probably be the next EU member, very soon, they speak about 2027/2028, so I recommend people visit Montenegro.”

The upcoming new flight connections to five major European cities will make following that advice even easier to do. Further, as an as-yet non-EU member, Montenegro has not been implementing the EU’s much-criticised new Entry/Exit System (EES), making it potentially less hassle to visit for third-country arrivals than its EU rivals.
