The general strike called for Wednesday, 3 June 2026, comes in response to proposed government employment reforms and follows failed talks and a government promise to plough ahead with unpopular measures.

The workers’ displeasure at what representatives have called an “unprecedented attack on established rights” will make itself felt across approximately 500 flights on that day, according to initial estimates by the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC). An internal union document seen by national news outlet Notícias ao Minuto highlights that travellers’ journeys could also be impacted on “the days before and after” the walkout.

Cabin crew operations for TAP, its regional providers Portugália and SATA, will suffer up to 79% staff absence, and other airlines are bracing for a difficult time. Ensuing staff shortages could create problems at the start of the summer season for Europe’s largest airline by passenger numbers, Ryanair, and its low-cost rival easyJet, which fly out of Portuguese hubs.

Trouble is not only predicted in the skies, but on trains, ferries, buses and metros too. The communications and transport syndicate FECTRANS has “guaranteed a strong mobilisation of the sector.”

It all means that users of ground transport services should be aware of the likelihood of challenging travel conditions on and around 3 June, with impacts probable on the Lisbon Metro, Carris, Transtejo/Soflusa, Fertagus, Porto Metro, STCP and CP – Comboios de Portugal.

During similar strikes over the same grievances in December 2026, the Portuguese transport network was brought to a standstill, with rail services shut down and hundreds of flights wiped from schedules.

Portugal is already labouring under the burden of the new controls rolled out as part of the European Entry Exit System (EES). The national guard was brought into Humberto Delgado Airport earlier in the spring, and now it has been announced that extra police will be deployed to the country’s Schengen-border airports to help manage the hours-long queues that have developed as travellers complete biometric data checks for the first time.

With that existing chaos at airports in mind, the upcoming strike threatens to be a dark day for Portuguese transport. Accordingly, travellers are urged to look at alternative dates and to leave themselves plenty of additional time for any unavoidable journeys.

The 32 courageous passengers aboard the inaugural flight took 25 hours to travel from Amsterdam to New York. The Douglas C-54 Skymaster made refuelling stops in Prestwick, Scotland and Gander, Canada. Evert van Dijk captained the flight, and the mayors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam were among the passengers on this historic crossing.

Originally designed as a military transport aircraft during the war, the Douglas C-54 was later converted for civilian use. It remained in service until the late 1950s, quickly becoming a symbol of the new era of transatlantic travel.

Founded by a group of eight investors from the Dutch business and banking sectors at the end of the First World War, KLM (short for Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij voor Nederland en Koloniën, or Royal Dutch Airlines for the Netherlands and Colonies) was led by aviation pioneer Albert Plesman, often nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman”. Plesman became the airline’s president and oversaw its rapid post-war expansion and the development of its long-haul network.

During the German occupation, KLM could not fly from the Netherlands, but its West Indies division remained active. After liberation, the airline quickly rebuilt its operations and launched the Amsterdam–New York route using new aviation technology. This formed the core of its modern transatlantic network, which soon expanded to include Central and South America.

KLM’s current CEO, Marjan Rintel, described the route as reflecting the “close ties between the Netherlands and the US for 80 years”.

“What began in 1946 as a groundbreaking connection has grown into a vital link for business travellers, tourists, and cargo traffic. For decades, this route has supported trade, investment, and cultural exchange, bringing people and economies on both sides of the Atlantic closer together.”

To mark the anniversary, KLM is hosting two exhibitions on both sides of the Atlantic.

A pop-up exhibition in Manhattan, running until 27 May, is taking place in the lobby of the New-York Historical Society. Among the objects displayed are vintage travel items and the original china once used on board the first flights, offering a glimpse into an era far removed from the plastic-wrapped sandwiches and disposable cutlery now commonly associated with economy-class travel. KLM has also unveiled a limited-edition Delft Blue miniature house modelled on the museum building itself.

Incidentally, KLM introduced economy class in 1952 in an effort to democratise flying. Members of the Dutch royal family have been spotted flying in economy. King Willem-Alexander is a fully licensed commercial pilot, and for over two decades, he secretly worked as a part-time co-pilot for KLM’s regional subsidiary, Cityhopper.

Meanwhile, the Dutch aviation museum Aviodrome has opened a new exhibition titled The PH-TAR and the Journey to the New World, where a carefully restored Douglas DC-4 awaits visitors. It was made to look exactly like the original 1946 service, painted in the PH-TAR livery. Visitors can even step inside the aircraft to experience the cabin as the first passengers did.

Today, KLM and Delta Air Lines jointly operate the route, offering up to four daily flights between Amsterdam and New York. Last year alone, nearly half a million passengers and over 17 million kilograms of cargo were carried on this route, underlining its continuing economic importance.

Aircraft have also evolved dramatically over the decades, from the iconic Boeing 747 to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which KLM now uses on many long-haul routes as part of its efforts to make flying more sustainable.

The overnight passenger rail journey between the Azerbaijani and Georgian capitals was put on pause in 2020 du to COVID-19 border restrictions. Prior to that, the service was popular and considered “one of the most convenient and affordable ways to travel” between the two cities, reports ANewz.

The service will reportedly be operated aboard new Stadler rolling stock by ADY / Azerbaijan Railways. The initial schedule slates daily departures from Baku at 11:10 pm, with stops at Bilajari, Yevlakh, Ganja, Aghstafa and Boyuk Kasik in Azerbaijan, as well as Gardabani and Tbilisi stations in Georgia, arriving in Tbilisi the following morning at 8:41 am. Departures from Tbilisi are scheduled at 9:00 pm with arrival in Baku at 6:24 am.

Improving connectivity and travel links is a major priority for Azerbaijan as it seeks to pivot away from big oil and diversify its economy through tourism. Figures from the State Statistical Committee show a swelling non-oil sector, though fossil fuels still represent a chunk of GDP.

The link is likely to provide a boost to Georgian economy and visitor numbers too, since Georgian destinations continue to rely on Azerbaijan as one of their key tourist source markets. 

Uptake for the train is expected to be high among those rail enthusiasts seeking short breaks, students and those on a budget, and those looking to undertake multi-itinerary travel across the South Caucasus region. “A sleeper train through the Caucasus is exactly the kind of seamless regional connectivity that turns corridors into destinations,” said Florian Sengstschmid, CEO of Azerbaijan Tourism Board. 

While much of the landscape will be in darkness during the trip, passengers can expect to witness places such as the Absheron Peninsula approaching Baku, where greenery cedes to semi-desert landscapes, sculptural oil derricks, and industrial complexes as they approach the outskirts of Baku.

While tickets are already on sale, at the time of writing, according to the Azerbaijan Railways website, tickets to travel in either direction are currently only available to Azerbaijani citizens, and citizens of countries that are eligible for visa-free entry to Azerbaijan.

The announcement was made by the Georgian government during an official state visit to Azerbaijan led by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. It came alongside the signing of a historic bilateral protocol to fully implement the newly upgraded Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway section, ratified by Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev.

However, further details on the cross-border train are yet to be confirmed. Schedules have not yet been finalised and some commentators have raised questions about how quickly border procedures and travel visa requirements can be addressed or streamlined, and how reliable the international service will be.

The new service will run year round, with two departures a day, between Oslo and Berlin, with stops (in north to south order) in Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Lund, Malmo, Copenhagen airport and Copenhagen H, Odense, Kolding, Padborg, Hamburg, and Berlin.

Crossing four countries, from Norway, to Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, the complete journey is expected to take between 14 and 15 hours but will be slashed by an hour and a half when the new Fehmarn Belt tunnel between Germany and Denmark opens. That’s set for 2029 at the earliest but is more likely to be sometime in 2031, meaning the train service, which is slated to launch in 2028, could operate for up to three years with the longer duration. Ahead of that, a shorter version of the trip between Hamburg and Copenhagen will start as soon as winter 2027.

The DSB, Deutsche Bahn, Vy partnership will mark the first time in two decades that passengers will be able to make this trip by rail with no changes. Boarding the ICE L trains, travellers will be able to take advantage of the “L” or “low” floor, giving step-free access, while the carriage configuration provides for a restaurant car and family section, as well as first class options if desired.

Gro Bakstad, CEO of Vy, said: “It is fantastic that we are now getting a new, fixed train route in place between Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Berlin. The collaboration with DSB and Deutsche Bahn means that we will be able to connect Norway more closely to Europe, and in the long term, this could open up direct trains to more European cities.”

With the new, international route from Berlin via Copenhagen to Oslo, we are connecting Northern Europe and three capitals by train.”

And Flemming Jensen, CEO of DSB highlighted the record-breaking aspect of the connection. “We are proud that, together with Vy and DB, we will soon be able to offer one of the longest train routes in Europe,” he said. “This is not something we can achieve on our own – strong rail connections in Europe depend on strong partnerships between railway companies.”

It goes on: “Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance or evidence of criminal activity is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.”

State drug licensing laws changed less than a week before the TSA shift in position when the Trump administration’s acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche approved the reclassification of medical marijuana. The decision removes medical marijuana from the Schedule I category, where it used to sit alongside substances defined as having “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” such as heroin and LSD. Instead, it now falls under Schedule III and is deemed to have “a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”

The action does not mean marijuana has been legalised on a federal level, but it has nonetheless been described by the president of the American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp, Michael Bronstein, as “the most significant federal advancement in cannabis policy in over 50 years.” It paves the way for tax breaks for state-licensed producers and distributors to register with the DEA, and reflects the fact that nearly all American states have now approved cannabis use in some form.

Two dozen states plus Washington DC permit adult recreational use of marijuana, 40 authorise medical marijuana, and eight more sanction low-THC cannabis or CBD oil for medical use. Idaho and Kansas are the only two jurisdictions where marijuana is still outlawed.

While the TSA website is now effectively aligned with that reality, air passengers should be aware the new situation is not a free-for-all and that local laws vary. Importantly, the update does not specify how much medical marijuana each passenger is allowed to carry. The New York Post reports that a 23-year-old who attempted to fly with over 34 kg of “the devil’s lettuce” was arrested for trafficking in Miami. The agency also warns that “the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint,” making it clear that if a TSA agent finds marijuana and believes a passenger is breaking the law, the individual may be turned over to the police.

Unlike TSA PreCheck, TSA Gold+ is not a membership or fast-track programme for individuals. Travellers will still follow the same security rules and screening procedures.

For passengers, the most noticeable impact is expected to be indirect and gradual. TSA Gold+ aims to improve the flow of security checkpoints by introducing updated technology and more efficient staffing models. This could eventually lead to shorter waiting times and fewer bottlenecks during busy travel periods. However, early implementation is likely to look similar to current screening experiences.

The deal that will decide whether O’Leary will carry on is likely to see him pocket a significant chunk of that, according to a Ryanair statement. “Under the proposed new contract,” it says, he “will have a purchase option over 10m shares struck at market price (before the recent Iran war related decline), but (similar to his 2019 grant) these options will only be exercisable if very ambitious profits after tax or share price growth targets are achieved, which will create substantial value for all shareholders.”

O’Leary also ventured into political punditry, arguing that President Donald Trump would not allow the Strait of Hormuz to remain closed since his electoral survival depends on it. “The midterm election season kicks off on Memorial Day at the end of May,” he said, adding: “You know, Trump is going to lose the House and the Senate if he doesn’t get this resolved and reopened. None of us know when the timing will be but, you know, I hope it’s sooner rather than later.”

Adding to the positive outlook for the airline, it awaits the delivery of 300 Boeing Air Max 10—an aircraft whose benefits O’Leary summed up as “20% more seats per plane burns 20% less oil.” The planes were reportedly purchased at bargain prices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
