Following its debut in the Caribbean in January 2026, the new Four Seasons cruise yacht, the Four Seasons I, has embarked on its maiden Mediterranean voyage. The inaugural Mediterranean season will take in Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye, with highlights including the Greek islands of Athens, Santorini, and Milos.

Built in the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy, the vessel is claimed in PR releases to represent “a new frontier of ultra-luxury travel.” Spanning 207 metres, Four Seasons I offers 95 “expansive suites, all featuring generous indoor-outdoor living, and supported by a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio.”

On board, guests enjoy surroundings designed by creatives such as Sweden’s Tillberg Design and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, while on shore, they benefit from access to exclusive ports and yacht-only harbours.

“Today’s luxury traveller values time, trust, and authenticity above all,” says Ben Trodd, CEO, Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd., Joint Owner/Operator of Four Seasons Yachts. “At Four Seasons Yachts, we answer that call by combining our global standard for luxury hospitality with renowned maritime leadership, inviting our guests to explore the world from an entirely new vantage point,” he added.

When it comes to dining, the yacht has 11 distinct restaurants and lounges. From “refined Mediterranean seafood” and “an intimate omakase experience,” to tasting menus from a rotating roster of Michelin-starred chefs, passengers will be presented with “a true epicurean platform at sea.”

Social spaces such as the Horizon Bar, featuring its sea views, its own plunge pool and a striking open-air design, or the Bar O, a “design-forward lounge” dedicated to craft cocktails and rare spirits, help to shape the rhythm of each day on board.

And of course, wellness is not in short supply either. L’Oceana Spa is conceived as a sanctuary filled with premium treatments and amenities, including a hammam and a thermal circuit complete with a sauna, aromatic steam, and cold therapies. Treatments available include cryotherapy, infrared therapy beds, hydrotherapy, and advanced recovery, restoration, and longevity approaches. Guests can also partake in sunrise yoga and meditation, breathing sessions, and fitness training.

The first Mediterranean voyage of the Four Seasons I coincides with the 65th anniversary of Four Seasons and the opening of the company’s first hotel on the first day of spring in 1961. It’s a moment, the brand says, to celebrate its “enduring legacy of excellence” as well as “the beginning of a new chapter, as Four Seasons extends its globally recognized hospitality from land and sky to sea.”

Alejandro Reynal, President and Chief Executive Officer, Four Seasons, said: “Four Seasons Yachts is a continuation of the pioneering ambition on which Four Seasons was built, and will reflect the same genuine care, service excellence, and exceptional moments we create for guests on land. We are proud to introduce a new expression of our brand at sea, opening an entirely new horizon for our guests.”

With first-year visits to destinations synonymous with luxury, like Saint-Tropez, as well as lesser-frequented harbours including Hydra and Montenegro, the yacht will undertake 32 voyages across 52 sailings, exploring 130 distinct destinations in more than 30 countries and territories throughout the Mediterranean in summer and the Caribbean and Bahamas in winter.

Adventurous travellers looking for an alternative to flying, taking the train or travelling on a conventional ferry this summer will once again be able to cross the Channel by catamaran.

In 2025, SailLink launched its first public crossings on its 17-metre catamaran, Echoes, between the UK and France, with journeys powered by wind for around 70 percent of the voyage. For 2026, the company is making its comeback, bigger and better.

SailLink will double the number of crossings between Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer, operating six to eight trips per week. The catamaran can carry up to 12 passengers, particularly cyclists, hikers, and other foot passengers, and their bikes and carry-on luggage. The journey takes between three and five hours each way, depending on wind conditions. Complimentary pastries and coffee are served on board, alongside… sea-sickness tablets.

Around 450 passengers travelled between the two countries with SailLink last summer.

Andrew Simons, SailLink’s founder, said that they had “proven that passengers are eager to put adventure back into their journey.”

Reviews from last season show a perfect five-star rating. Anna H described it as “an exhilarating and refreshing way to travel, in tune with the rhythm of the waves and with the chance to spot wildlife – it’s just unforgettable.” Sarah H praised the crew’s attention to her young son: “A game changer for cross-Channel travel. Great care was taken to look after my seven-year-old son, even letting him steer, which made him feel as though he was on a huge adventure while still enjoying the comforts of home.”

The aim this season, Simon further explained, is to open up the experience to a wider audience, with the longer-term vision of demonstrating that low-carbon transport is a viable option today and paving the way for purpose-built vessels in the near future. The vessel and its operations have both been upgraded for 2026, with technical improvements and refined navigation systems.

SailLink will also serve as an official ambassador for the planned Cross-Channel Geopark, which is currently applying for UNESCO status. The Geopark aims to link the chalk coasts of Kent and the Côte d’Opale. The Geopark marks the site of a prehistoric megaflood that carved out the English Channel around 450,000 years ago. The White Cliffs of Dover and Cap Blanc-Nez are the two remaining sections of what was once a continuous mountain range.

Passengers are invited to participate in the sailing on board, though those who prefer to relax on deck or stretch out on the forward trampoline with a pastry are equally welcome.

Advantages of crossing by catamaran rather than by other means include the absence of queues, an intimate atmosphere on board, a swift border process thanks to the small number of passengers arriving at any one time, and a cooperative police force on both sides of the “pond” who will meet you as you disembark on the pontoon. “Stress-free travel at its best,” is how SailLink describes it on its website.

Cyclists and hikers making their way to the annual Marathon de la Mer in May or the Trail Côte d’Opale (TCO) in September may find the catamaran an ideal way to travel.

The season runs from April to October, with one-way fares ranging from around €35 for children to €98 for adults. Discounted rates are available for teenagers and young adults (under 26s).

Ultra high-end hospitality brand Aman has announced the first-ever itineraries for its first ocean motor yacht, the Amangati, opening bookings for spring 2027’s inaugural voyages around the Mediterranean and beyond.

Aman describes the “maiden season” as “tracing storied coastlines, secluded coves and timeless harbours.” Each voyage “reflects Aman’s spirit of calm discovery, uniting cultural depth and natural beauty with the rare serenity found only at sea,” the Swiss-headquartered, Russian-owned company says on its website.

Amangati sets sail from spring 2027. Expanding the world of Aman, the 180-metre luxury motor yacht spans nine decks and 47 suites, and includes an Aman Spa and four exceptional dining venues. Discover the freedom and serenity of Aman at Sea.https://t.co/npWSMgAC8t pic.twitter.com/iIqvad4lR4
— Aman (@Amanresorts) January 21, 2026

The sailings commence on Friday, 7 May 2027, with six nights across seven ports, casting off from Palma de Mallorca, calling at Mahon, Barcelona, Palamós, Marseille, St Tropez, and Nice. Across the season, in addition to Mediterranean Spain and the French Riviera, the Amangati will sail other five-to-eight-night itineraries visiting the Italian Riviera, the Adriatic and Dalmatian coasts, the Greek Isles, and Türkiye.

Unusual port calls include Beaulieu-sur-Mer, while other gems include Napoleon’s island of exile, Elba, and sailings that take guests to the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix, or offer exclusive access to Venice’s historic Grand Canal. But it will not be a rush from place to place. Relaxed late departures are a part of the approach, while two helipads and six tenders give high-powered guests flexibility, too.

The 183-metre vessel will boast nine decks, where high ceilings and full-height windows maximise natural light and ocean vistas. Guests will stay in one of 47 suites, renderings of which portray a Japandi style of calm chic. That aura of tranquillity extends beyond, with eight wellness treatment areas with private ocean-view terraces, showers, and open-air whirlpool baths, a hammam and a traditional Russian wood-fired stove sauna, or banya.

There will be four principal dining venues and a range of lounges and bars. Menus in Alira’s all-day, open-air restaurant celebrate Mediterranean produce and cuisine. Two Japanese options are planned: Hiori will be a Japanese Teppanyaki sushi and griddle experience, where the skill and precision of chefs will be on display, while Akari will present traditional washoku’s seasonal ingredients and elegance, with an omakase approach where the chef curates personalised tasting menus, with sake accompaniments. The Aman Grill will pay its respects to aged meats, fresh fish and vegetables by fire, with wine pairings. Lounge and bar accommodation includes a jazz club, a gelato bar, a pool bar, and a cigar lounge.

Guests can work off all those guilty pleasures in a state-of-the-art fitness studio, or contemplate the horizon during yoga and meditation sessions, lazing around the pool, or by the Japanese garden. A cinema also waits to cocoon them.

Currently under construction at T. Mariotti shipyard in Genoa, Italy, when the Amangati is ready, it will “mark the brand’s arrival on the world’s oceans,” where “peace, privacy and genuine service will unfold, bringing its fabled hospitality to the water,” Aman says.

However, the Aman floating-hotel-cum-superyacht is set to compete with other, new, luxury vessels from brands like Belmond, Ritz Carlton, and Four Seasons, also attempting to convince the yacht charter crowd that they can do better than a typical small, multi-tasking crew.

The Saudi Red Sea Authority (SRSA) has launched an Introductory Guide to Coastal Tourism Activities that is being billed as a “first-of-its-kind” digital gateway that will help to grow the sector. Called EBHAR, which means “to impress” or “dazzle” in Arabic, it is designed to address gaps in information and streamline various sources into a single electronic reference.

In a press release, the SRSA says the guide provides tourists, investors, and practitioners with “one comprehensive digital access point for all relevant information, regulations, and procedures,” a development that represents “a qualitative leap in the SRSA’s efforts to enhance the coastal tourism sector, increase its attractiveness, and establish a clear, unified reference framework for coastal tourism activities.”

The #SaudiRedSeaAuthority has launched the #IntroductoryGuideforYachting to be your trusted compass for sailing with confidence.

The guide provides everything needed to support this activity, ensuring a safe and sustainable maritime experience along the Red Sea coast.

Learn… pic.twitter.com/2MXCE58kvw
— الهيئة السعودية للبحر الأحمر (@RedSeaSaudi) January 4, 2026

Like other Arabian Peninsula states, Saudi Arabia continues its pivot towards tourism, and the EBHAR platform is part of that drive. Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has said the country “aspires to position the Red Sea as a global benchmark for best practices in the blue economy, and to become a global pioneer in research, development, and innovation in this field.”

With the EBHAR guide, the SRSA aims to allow coastal tourism stakeholders, whether tourists, investors, or practitioners, to access all relevant details, including updated requirements, conditions, and procedures, in one place. What’s more, “smart links” direct users to the official platforms of competent authorities responsible for the requested service—an approach to shorten processing times and “transform the information seeking journey into a smooth, reliable, and fully integrated digital experience.” The guide also includes a Frequently Asked Questions section, along with advice on permitted and prohibited practices.

© Saudi Red Sea Authority

The first series of the guide is already in the public domain and is dedicated to yachting activities, offering what the SRSA claims is “a clear and practical end-to-end pathway for a yacht’s journey from arrival to departure.” It includes procedures, documentation, licenses and permits, mechanisms for choosing and confirming the port of entry (port/marina) through a licensed agent, as well as directories of approved service providers (maritime tourism agents, yacht charter companies, and marinas). The guide further incorporates safety and environmental sustainability guidelines, and will feature updates on regulations, helping users to ensure compliance, receive feedback and handle complaints in line with requirements.

Travel Tomorrow spoke to Experience Designer and leisure sailor Tom Wellings, who reviewed the site and called it “a good initiative in what seems to be an early iteration.” He noted the “large chunk of complex official jargon” rather than Plain English on the landing page, how challenging it is to navigate to the right information, and supposed “smart links” that currently take users to PDFs rather than digitised web pages. In addition, when the language is set to English, reading direction for some icons remains right-to-left, though this does not present a major issue, in his view.

EBHAR is the result of intensive coordination efforts led by the SRSA and is a step towards better integration of the coastal tourism sector, which the Authority recognises as one of the key drivers of tourism growth as per the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled the Maybach Ocean Club, a superyacht concept marking the brand’s first foray into ultra-luxury maritime living. Designed as an invitation-only members’ club, the project is expected to set sail in 2029, offering a turnkey experience for a select group of co-owners, as described by Mercedes.

Currently known as Beyond Horizons, the yacht will feature 30 cabins and is conceived as a “floating private retreat” rather than a conventional cruise vessel. Membership will be capped, with co-owners selected through a rigorous vetting process intended to foster a “close-knit community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for luxury and maritime adventures.”

Those accepted will be entitled to spend up to four weeks per year on board.

Unapologetically aimed at the global top 0.1%, the interior design of the yacht is described by Mercedes as deliberately restrained, built around light, form, and carefully selected materials. Curved lines and subdued tones are intended to create an atmosphere of calm and privacy. The tailor-made interiors are inspired by the Mercedes-Maybach aesthetic and are designed to emphasise what the brand calls “quiet grandeur” rather than overt display.

The itineraries match this discreet exclusivity, with seasonal routes spanning the Mediterranean in summer and calling at Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and the Greek Islands. In winter, the yacht shifts to warmer, equally exclusive destinations in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, including the Seychelles and the Maldives.

Founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach, the engineer behind some of the earliest Mercedes engines, the brand has always been associated with elite, high-performance engineering, producing engines for aircraft, boats, and tanks. After disappearing briefly as an independent marque, Mercedes-Benz revived the brand in 2014 as an ultra-luxury sub-brand positioned above the S-Class. Since then, the brand has expanded beyond cars to explore architecture and branded spaces, and is now venturing into maritime design.

Beyond Horizons will feature 74-square-metre suites, each bearing the Maybach emblem and finished with bespoke materials throughout the sleeping, dining, and lounge areas. All cabins will feature private, sea-facing balconies. The yacht’s total deck space is expected to reach 4,645 square metres and will include layered teak terraces, expansive sun decks, and an infinity pool at the stern.

Wellness will play a central role, with dedicated spa areas, personalised rituals, and curated experiences complemented by high-end gastronomy. A 70-metre auxiliary vessel will accompany the yacht to transport water toys and equipment, and there are also plans for an onboard helipad. The project has been developed by the German design studio Dölker + Voges in collaboration with the Mercedes-Maybach design team.

Mercedes positions the Ocean Club as a strategic extension of Mercedes-Benz Places, presenting it as an extension of Maybach’s historic connection to engineering beyond automobiles. According to the company, the brand’s connection to the maritime world “dates back to the 1920s, when it drew on its technical expertise to develop engines for early automobiles, aircraft and boats, laying the groundwork for collaborations with leading shipping companies.”

Discussions are currently underway with several European shipyards, and a construction contract is expected once sufficient early member commitments have been secured. The project’s messaging also prominently features sustainability, with promises of clean-fuel propulsion systems and eco-conscious materials, although technical specifications have yet to be disclosed.

As the Maybach Ocean Club website states, “Members believe that time is sacred, personal relationships are essential for every aspect of life, and true richness lies in experiencing everything the world has to offer.”

A tourist yacht carrying five people sank off the coast of Fonte da Telha beach in Portugal on Saturday after being rammed by a pod of orcas. Footage captured by the sailing company Mercedes-Benz Oceanic Lounge shows the whales repeatedly striking the vessel, causing it to tilt and eventually sink.

Witnesses watched in shock as the dramatic encounter unfolded, with one hearing exclaim, “Oh my God.” All five crew members were rescued by nearby boats shortly before the yacht went down.

Orca attacks sailing boat, causing it to sink off Portugal's coast. Orcas ‘broke the rudder of the sailboat, opening a hole below the waterline, allowing water to enter.’ Sailors did not require medical assistance. pic.twitter.com/vovijsYk3j
— Engaging Topics (@EngagingTopics) September 16, 2025

The Portuguese maritime authorities say they received an alert around 12:30 pm about an interaction with orcas. Crews from the lifeguard station of Cascais and the Captaincy of the Port of Lisbon were dispatched immediately. Upon arrival, it was found that all aboard were physically well. None required medical attention.

Later the same day, there was a second encounter with the same pod off the Bay of Cascais. In that instance, another vessel with four people aboard was involved, but those individuals were unharmed and removed safely.

According to witness reports, there may have been four orcas involved in the first attack, although some reports attribute the damage primarily to one of the whales, which struck the rudder.

Since May 2020, there have been hundreds of recorded incidents of orcas ramming vessels in the area around the Iberian Peninsula. The causes remain unclear, but marine researchers and maritime authorities are investigating possible explanations — including increasing human-sea traffic, shifts in food supply, or changes in orca behaviour.

A small group of orcas is ramming into sailboats in waters off the Iberian Peninsula, sinking three since last summer and disrupting dozens of others.

“It’s a reminder of where we are in the food chain and the natural world,” one skipper said.https://t.co/FWwTyfmIps pic.twitter.com/EvozYwzxXI
— The New York Times (@nytimes) May 24, 2023

The sinking has prompted calls for more safety protocols, including better tracking of orca pods, warnings for recreational boats in known orca areas, and public education about how to respond when whales approach. Some suggest that vessel design (such as rudder and hull structure) might be examined to reduce vulnerability.

As of now, the identities of the orcas involved are not known; researchers may study the incident to determine whether these whales are part of known local pods. Meanwhile, the public is being urged to report orca sightings and interaction incidents to help map out patterns and aid in prevention.

On Wednesday, 10 September 2025, US authorities are closing the sealed bid auction of a $300 million yacht. While the sale could be a steal, legal experts are warning any potential buyers of the risk involved in the transaction.

The 106-meter-long Amadea, as the yacht is called, was seized by the US in 2022, as authorities believed that the ship belonged to the sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. It was thus forfeited by order of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York; However, while Kerimov has been denying his ownership ever since, the unsanctioned Russian businessman Eduard Khudainatov has been insisting on being the Amadea’s owner.

While Khudainatov has filed several lawsuits through his lawyer, Mr Ford of the law firm Ford O’Brien Landy, the US has nevertheless decided to sell the ship docked in San Diego, California. With its eight cabins, helipad, and cinema lounge, the upkeep is estimated to cost the US nearly $1 million per month, according to The New York Times and a sale is therefore seen as essential.

Floating lawsuit

Although it is thought that the ship will be sold for a fraction of its initial price, law experts have been warning of the potential risks involved in the auction. Paul Stephan, a law professor at the University of Virginia, has already branded the boat a ‘floating lawsuit’. According to him, some entrepreneurs with an appetite for risk might gamble on the Amadea, but they might regret their purchase as soon as the yacht leaves the US.

Indeed, while the US court has so far denied the fact that Eduard Khudainatov is the owner of the Amadea, foreign courts might judge otherwise.

“A creative lawyer could come up with arguments that might succeed even in a strong rule-of-law jurisdiction such as the UK: (1) Does US civil forfeiture procedure satisfy standards of fair process? (2) Did the US court deny the nominal owner his day in court? (3) Are the US sanctions against public policy? Countries that are not inclined to accept the US sanctioning regime and have less independent courts might be even more inclined to reject the US judgment. Good luck sailing into Hong Kong or Macao, for example. In each instance, it would add risk to the transaction and at least make it more expensive, if not unattainable”, Stephan explained.

The law professor’s reasoning seems to be confirmed by Eduard Khudainatov’s lawyer, who has been trying to appeal the forfeiture.

“The sale is improper and premature; we retain title and are actively appealing the forfeiture ruling. If our appeal succeeds, the government must repay the vessel’s full value. We doubt it will attract any rational buyer at fair market price, because ownership can, and will, be challenged in courts outside the United States, exposing purchasers to years of costly, uncertain litigation. Recent judgments in European and Caribbean courts have already penalised buyers who acquired assets through illegitimate seizures, including Russian-owned superyachts. Prospective bidders should study those precedents carefully”, Mr Ford of the law firm Ford O’Brien Landy said about the auction.

The Amadea is being sold via a closed bid auction, closing on 10 September 2025. A $10 million initial bid deposit is required from each bidder, although there is no fee to place a bid. All bid deposits will be held in escrow until the auction closes at 2:00 pm ET on 10 September 2025.

Accor Group’s Orient Express is due to launch the world’s largest sailing yacht in 2026 and has just revealed the design set to take the railway legend out onto “the world’s most beautiful seas, offering an unparalleled experience of travel and discovery,” according to brand CEO Sébastien Bazin.

“A contemporary vision” with heritage touches

Leaning into the Orient Express’s 140-year-long reputation for luxury voyages, the vast 220-metre yacht will accommodate just 54 suites, up to a spacious 230 square metres, each decked out in top quality materials such as wood, leather, and marble. Guests aboard the Corinthian will be treated to fine craftmanship on the interior, and at the exterior – not cities and fields rushing by, but ocean vistas through panoramic bay windows.

Preview images released by the Group, show warm, generous spaces, punctuated by geometric art deco features and streamline touches that nod to the brand’s heritage.

“All the suites and the entire design of the yacht have been conceived as unique spaces that break the boundaries of Orient Express’s classic decorative grammar while remaining true to its very particular codes,” says architect Maxime d’Angeac, the man behind what he calls “a contemporary vision of Orient Express, that of an era in which high quality is synonymous with excellence and calls for a real aesthetic revolution.”

From fine dining to a speakeasy and watersports

As well as the 54 suites over decks four, five and six, with a select few on top deck seven, the Corinthian will boast five restaurant options, from formal fine dining to more relaxed and intimate spaces. And among the yacht’s eight bars, guests will discover a 1930s-style speakeasy and a Parisian-style cabaret lounge.

The Corinthian’s maiden 2026 itineraries will focus on the Mediterranean, with port calls at Greek Islands and Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast, so to make the most of the region’s sunshine and balmy evenings, guests may gravitate towards the yacht’s stern, where a water sports marina and pool await, alongside more al fresco dining.

Inspired by the golden age

Or if an “evening in” is more in order, a 115-seat cabaret and a cinema promise to keep guests entertained, while, for the creative types, the Corinthian even provides a recording studio. And after all that exertion, why not pamper yourself with a world-class spa and wellness treatment?

Hailing the Orient Express’s newest adventure, Bazin described the Corinthian as “a yacht inspired by the golden age of luxury cruising, reinventing movement and comfort on the water, and designed to meet the sustainable challenges of tomorrow. It’s a source of pride for us all.”

By 2026, the Maldives will be welcoming the archipelago’s first dedicated superyacht marina. Even though the Maldives include 172 luxury resorts, a purpose-built superyacht marina – an essential for the super rich – was still lacking.

Designed by Killa Design, the Zamani Islands will be developed by Atoll Estates, both UAE-based companies. It will be a part of an expansive resort stretching over eight islands and designed to cater to a luxury public.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts, the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” said Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

Zamani Islands is set to become a 5-star development, located within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll and at just 21 nautical miles from the main international airport. The project will be spread over eight islands and will comprise three separate resorts. Luxurious villas, private pools, screening rooms, personal spas and multiple entertainment spaces will all be available throughout the resort.

The project will, once completed, include an Uber Luxury Resort, an Experiential Luxury Resort and a Modern Lifestyle Resort. The first one is set to open in 2026, thus kicking off the development, and offering a collection of private residences. The Experiental Luxury Resort comprises 199 villas and a private island beach club for over 21 year old people only. Lastly, the Modern Lifestyle Resort will have 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club, dining and entertainment facilities. All resorts will have private butler service and berths within the super yacht marina, offering full-service facilities including crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance, and access to the yacht club.

“Zamani Islands by Atoll Estates is set to redefine luxury and sustainability in the real estate and hospitality sphere”,commented Atoll Estates. “This ground-breaking destination will launch its first phase in Spring 2026, placing ‘planet and people’ as the driving force across the entire operation from design to food sourcing.”

An important part of the design process will be the fact that the project aims to be the first 100% green and renewable energy resort in the Maldives. A selection of marine-friendly materials will thus be used and an active coral relocation program will be put in motion, with 700,000 square metres being dedicated to this cause.

Superyachts and the question of where to safely harbour them have been in the news after the August 2024 sinking of the Bayesian during a storm in the Mediterranean.

But the issue is not a recent one. The expansion of superyacht ownership means there is growing demand for places to accommodate such huge vessels. Elite Traveller notes there are “more and more yachts on the water, many of which are well above 130ft” and cites data suggesting there are seven superyachts for every berth in the US. But never fear, investors and marinas are responding.

From the Antibes to the Bahamas

The list of ports upgrading to be able to welcome superyachts includes Port Vauban whose Quai Camille Rayon has seen investment worth €135 million ($146m) from Antibes’ International Yacht Club to transform it into a facility dubbed “Billionaires’ Quay”. Head down the Mediterranean coast to Barcelona’s Port Vell and you’ll find 151 berths for yachts up to 620ft (189m), rivalled for berth size only by Porto Montenegro.

Port Vell, Barcelona © CC BY-ND 2.0 | Ulf Liljankoski on Flickr

Of course, such harbours need to do more than simply offer a safe haven and be far more than what Ra’anan Ben-Zur, the developer behind the largest marina in North America calls “a glorified parking lot”. With owners paying around €8.5m ($9.1m) for a ten-year lease on a 280-ft berth in the Antibes, and just 10% of yacht time spent out at sea, clubhouses and five-star hotels too match the expectations not only of owners but those who “rent out” the spot when owners are absent.

Oligarch standards

This means facilities must be up to oligarch standard, helipads should be on standby, and those stepping off the yachts expect luxury shopping in the vicinity. The standard of living also needs to meet the needs of crew members who are used to the high life. Elite Traveller notes that Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor also offers an International School so the kids’ can get a schooling in between sailings or perhaps Mum and Dad can drop in to say hello and pick up report cards.

Ben Zur’s project, Habacoa, will bring 150 berths up to 720ft (220m) to the Bahamas and in addition to the usual five-star hotel, restaurants, shopping and wellness facilities, will feature an exclusive, members-only yacht club, a casino and Zaha Hadid Architects-designed nightclub complex.

Sustainability?

Sustainability is also high up the wish list these days, especially in North America, where Ben Zur points out there is huge pressure on coast lines with nearly “all oceanfront land” developed. According to Super Yacht Times, Habacoa has made various environmental commitments including “working with marine biologists to transplant any corals potentially impacted by construction to vetted locations so they can safely flourish.”
