The ranking was compiled through a vote among subscribers to European Best Destinations’ newsletter. A total of 11,614 people participated over 33 days, with each respondent allowed to select up to three destinations. They chose from a shortlist of 64 places, including 20 capitals and 44 other destinations, selected by independent travel journalists. The ten destinations receiving the most votes made the final ranking.

In central Sofia, visitors can explore the remains of Serdica, the city’s ancient Roman predecessor, before walking towards Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The cathedral’s golden domes are among the capital’s best-known landmarks. Art lovers can visit Kvadrat 500, part of Bulgaria’s National Gallery, while the Regional History Museum occupies the former Central Mineral Baths. On the outskirts, Boyana Church adds another period of history to the itinerary. Its UNESCO-listed buildings contain frescoes, paintings applied to walls, dating from 1259.

Beyond the main attractions, the guide encourages visitors to explore markets, cafés and places serving Bulgarian wine. Sofia’s official tourism website provides a wine map identifying shops, bars and restaurants where local wines can be tasted or bought. Cultural events offer another reason to visit, including the Sofia International Film Festival, traditionally held in spring. In summer, the A to JazZ festival brings outdoor performances to South Park II. Travellers planning around either event should check the organisers’ calendars for 2027 dates. Vitosha offers a different setting for part of the trip, with forest trails and mountain views, although routes should be chosen according to the season and conditions.

The city’s first place comes alongside a separate nomination for European Capital of Tourism 2027. That competition assesses areas including accessibility, sustainability, digital development and cultural heritage. Unlike the city break ranking, its shortlist was drawn up through expert assessment rather than a subscriber vote. “For us, it is an external assessment of the work done by the entire tourism ecosystem of Sofia,” said Anton Penev, director of Sofia Municipality’s Tourism Municipal Enterprise, about that nomination. The shortlisted cities are due to present their proposals to a European jury in Brussels on 18 and 19 November 2026.

Elsewhere in the city break ranking, second-placed Lisbon is highlighted for its neighbourhoods, Portuguese food and viewpoints overlooking the city and river. Its cultural attractions include contemporary art at MAC/CCB and evenings of fado, a Portuguese musical tradition associated with expressive singing. Copenhagen takes third place, with design, cycling and neighbourhood restaurants central to its appeal. Cannes follows in fourth, combining the Croisette seafront promenade with the old quarter of Le Suquet and Forville market. Fifth-placed Basel offers museums, contemporary architecture and time beside the Rhine. Bristol ranks sixth, with street art, live music and independent food businesses around Wapping Wharf among its attractions.

Leuven takes seventh place, bringing a Belgian destination into the top ten. The guide highlights its university atmosphere and manageable size, as well as its selection, with East Brabant as European Capital of Culture for 2030. Milan follows in eighth place, offering galleries in Brera and evenings beside the Navigli canals. Ninth-placed Calpe, on Spain’s Costa Blanca, brings a coastal option to the selection, with its old town and the prominent Peñón de Ifach rock. Verona completes the ranking in tenth place, with its historic centre, walks along the Adige River and opera performances at the Arena during the season.

Held at Grifid Noa in Golden Sands from 11 to 13 May, the summit brought together more than 200 participants from 29 countries, including European institutions, government representatives, tourism experts, medical professionals and spa industry leaders. Organised by the European Spas Association, the Bulgarian Union of Balneology and SPA Tourism and HTI Conference & Expo, the event positioned Bulgaria as a growing hub for health, spa and medical tourism.

Varna presents health tourism as an investment in quality of life

Opening the summit, organisers and hosts underlined the need to connect sectors that too often operate separately. A greeting message from EU Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva set the tone for the discussions, highlighting the importance of natural resources, prevention and innovation in shaping the future of European health tourism.

Speaking on behalf of Varna Municipality, Deputy Mayor Snezhana Apostolova welcomed participants to Golden Sands and St Constantine and Helena, describing them as “places where sea, minerals, natural resources and modern tourism infrastructure create a unique environment for recovery, wellness and quality living.”

“Today, tourism is far more than an industry. It is an investment in the future, in quality of life, and in the sustainable development of destinations,” Apostolova said.

She added that Varna’s ambition is to be recognised as a destination combining “medical expertise, spa and wellness traditions, exceptional natural resources, and a high quality tourism product.”

Bulgaria welcomes Europe’s health tourism community

Assoc. Prof. Dr Siyka Katsarova, President of ESPA and BUBSPA, highlighted Bulgaria’s natural assets and the importance of evidence-based health tourism.

“I’m really happy to welcome you in my home country, Bulgaria, one of the oldest countries in the world, and to open the first edition of the European Health Exchange Summit,” Katsarova said.

She also underlined the international dimension of the event, noting the presence of “28 countries, 200 guests, 100 foreigners, and most of them first time” participants. Addressing the audience, she added: “Stay here, exchange your opinions, find new contacts, and enjoy the nature.”

EU policy focuses on sustainable and resilient tourism ecosystems

The morning plenary then turned to EU policy and cooperation opportunities. Victoria Petrova, Senior Expert at the European Commission’s DG MOVE, presented the Commission’s work on sustainable and resilient tourism ecosystems.

Petrova explained that the EU does not make tourism decisions directly, but plays a coordination role across Member States, regions and authorities. “We coordinate the work of the European Member States, of the regions and the local authorities,” she said.

She added that the Commission is particularly active in areas that are crucial for tourism, including “digital economy, mobility, climate, taxation and business.”

Petrova highlighted the importance of fact-based policymaking, including the use of data from the Joint Research Centre to identify tourism concentrations and development potential at the regional and municipal levels. She also pointed to EU funding opportunities for tourism SMEs, climate adaptation, innovation and destination management, noting that tourism companies can tap into several European programmes.

Health tourism, Petrova said, has significant potential in Europe, particularly in the context of the longevity economy, the 55-plus population and people requiring accessible health-related services.

She also referred to future priorities, including skills development, data, technology, multimodal connectivity and closer cooperation with international organisations. One of the Commission’s objectives, she explained, is to support the sector with tools to better manage destinations, develop skills and diversify tourism flows.

Regional development as a foundation for health tourism

Former Czech Minister for Regional Development Petr Kulhánek argued that spa and medical tourism cannot be treated as isolated activities. Drawing on his experience in Karlovy Vary, he said successful health tourism depends on cooperation between local authorities, tourism boards, medical providers, research organisations, businesses and residents.

According to Kulhánek, public investment in spa regions improves both the visitor experience and the quality of life of local communities. He also stressed that EU cohesion instruments and operational programmes have supported digitalisation, energy efficiency, research and innovation in spa destinations, even if the sector is still seeking stronger recognition within European healthcare systems.

Life sciences and natural healing resources

Ass. Prof. Dr Milena Angelova, member of the European Economic and Social Committee and rapporteur of the EU Life Sciences Strategy, called for a more holistic understanding of health.

She argued that Europe’s natural healing heritage, including mineral waters, therapeutic muds and climate therapy, should be integrated into the life sciences agenda alongside biotechnology, medicine and research infrastructure.

Angelova said medical spas and climate health resorts can contribute to prevention, rehabilitation, mental health and healthy ageing. She also called for stronger evidence, research, and data to support the sector’s claims and help natural therapies gain greater visibility in European health policy.

Rural communities at the heart of health tourism

The rural dimension of health tourism was addressed by Anja Fortuna of the Rural Pact Support Office. She noted that many spa destinations are located in rural areas and said closer cooperation with local communities is essential.

Farmers, craftsmen, local producers and residents, she argued, can all contribute to extending the value of health tourism beyond hotels and medical facilities.

Fortuna presented the Rural Pact as a platform to break silos and connect local, regional, national and European stakeholders. She encouraged health tourism actors to join the network and engage with rural communities to strengthen resilience, prosperity and local identity.

A European opportunity for prevention and regional transformation

Throughout the morning, speakers returned to the same central idea: Europe has unique assets in health tourism, but the sector needs stronger coordination, better evidence, clearer communication and closer alignment with EU priorities.

For Bulgaria, the summit offered an opportunity to present its mineral waters, Black Sea resorts, medical expertise and natural resources as part of this wider European conversation. For Europe, it underlined that health tourism is increasingly about prevention, healthy ageing, sustainability and regional transformation.

As the discussions in Varna made clear, the future of health tourism will depend not only on treatments and facilities, but on how destinations connect science, policy, nature, local communities and long-term wellbeing.

The southeastern Balkan country has a Black Sea coast and is almost one-third mountains, and has long been seen as an emerging tourism destination, attracting skiers and summer holidaymakers seeking good value. But its recent adoption of the euro and improved air connectivity are sparking new interest. What’s more, among its mountains, it boasts over 700 mineral springs, allowing the republic to carve out a name for itself for its spa and wellness offer, taking a slice of a thriving industry valued at €758.7 billion, according to the Global Wellness Institute.

“It is an encouraging trend that in recent years the desire to come for spa tourism in Bulgaria has increased by 15%,” said Irena Georgieva, Bulgaria’s Tourism Minister, adding: “At present, the question of what kind of destination Bulgaria is should not be framed as ‘is Bulgaria a cheap destination?’, But rather ‘is Bulgaria worth visiting?’, And I believe that more and more European tourists are answering this question positively.”

Spa capital Velingrad in the Rhodope mountains has led the way on wellness. Like Sandanski in the south-west, its mineral-rich waters are believed to have curative and preventive benefits, but visitors will find spas and wellness facilities all over the country thanks to beliefs going back to 4,000 years to the Thracians, who are said to have discovered water’s healing properties.

Bulgaria is also focused on developing its cultural tourism appeal, promoting heritage, dance, health, gastronomy, and folklore in a calendar of events all over the country that’s being promoted as “2026 Year of Cultural Tourism.”

Coming up in May, in the northwest, the Banitsa Festival in the village of the same name will pit bakers against each other to produce traditional banitsa pastries. These specialities are made with thin layers of dough and stuffed with a mixture of feta cheese, eggs, and yoghurt. They can also be made in meat, spinach, and even sweet varieties.

And in the ancient south central city of Plovdiv on 8-10 May, winelovers can explore the produce of native Bulgarian grapes in the Wine and Gourmet Festival taking place across a range of historic venues.

Also in May, in southern central Zlatograd, a four-day event showcasing Bulgarian folkloric music, the delicious-sounding Rotisserie Grill and Bagpipe Festival, will feature a sound that travels through space on the Voyager 1 and 2 – Bulgarian bagpipes and the voice of the Balkan folk queen, Valya Balkanska.

The Rose Festival across central Kazanlak and nearby villages happens annually in May and June, celebrating Bulgaria’s special connection to the Rosa Damascena – “the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose and all the gifts it has blessed the Rose Valley with for centuries.” Now in its 123^rd incarnation, the festival will bring artistic, cultural, dance, music, social and sports events to the region, culminating in the coronation of the Rose Queen.

The Cherry Festival follows in late June in the western city of Kyustendil, known as “the Orchard of Bulgaria.” It showcases cherries and cherry-based products and gastronomy, promising to bring visitors “closer to Bulgarian and Balkan customs and traditions.”

And that’s not to mention the East Coast’s Fried Sprat Festival, in June, when sea capital Varna invites everyone to spend summer days and evenings gazing out on the Black Sea with a cold beer and fried fish. Nor July’s Blueberry Nights, to delight foragers, hikers, and campers alike. There are also plum, tomato, yoghurt, bean, and cheese festivals lasting into the autumn.

Bulgaria boasts a landscape where, according to Lonely Planet, “soul-stirring mountains rival golden beaches, while cities hum with nightlife and art.” It was once part of the Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman Empires, and was liberated in the late 1800s, only to become a Communist state after World War II, transitioning to capitalism in the 1990s.

With a lower cost-of-living than most other European countries, a rich history, stunning ancient and contemporary architecture, a Black Sea coastline, and Balkan mountain hiking and snow sports, it could provide a fantastic base for exploring Europe and beyond.

The republic is rated Level 1, the lowest security alert, by the US State Department and is described as “generally a safe destination.” The main risks are described as petty crime, such as pickpocketing, car theft, ATM skimming, credit card fraud, and traffic incidents. However, the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) warns that Bulgaria remains one of the primary source countries of human trafficking in the EU, with Bulgarian women and girls the main target.

To be eligible to apply for the digital nomad residency route, candidates must be:

• Freelancers or independents working with non-Bulgarian clients for at least one year prior to application, or
• Business owners of at least 25% of a foreign-registered company that does not serve Bulgarian clients, or
• Remote employees of firms registered outside the EEA, EU, and Switzerland.
• Earners of at least 50 times the Bulgarian minimum monthly wage (€620 at the time of writing), putting the yearly income threshold at €31,000.
• Holders of a clean criminal record.
• Holders of health insurance valid in Bulgaria and the Schengen zone.
• In possession of proof of accommodation in Bulgaria.

It’s important to note that all foreign-issued documents used during the process must be officially translated into Bulgarian, with an authenticity stamp as needed.

Applications are completed in two stages. The first step is to apply for a “type D” long-stay visa through a Bulgarian embassy abroad. Once obtained (a process that can take up to two months), the type D visa gives candidates the right to enter Bulgaria and make a Digital Nomad Visa residence application, a step that must be taken within the first two weeks on Bulgarian soil and can take up to a month to complete. Once issued, the digital nomad residency visa remains valid for one year and can be renewed once, subject to eligibility.

Ancient City of Nessebar

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the ancient city of Nessebar is a top Bulgarian summer resort on the Black Sea coast, just 35 kilometres from the city of Burgas.

Known for its crystal-clear waters and golden beaches, Nessebar boasts more than 3,000 years of history, dating back to the ancient Thracians and evident by numerous archaeological finds. Visitors can explore artefacts at the Archaeological Museum at the beginning of the peninsula.

Nessebar’s UNESCO status recognises its architectural ensemble, spanning significant historical periods. Archaeological finds include structures from the second millennium BC, a Hellenistic villa, religious buildings from Antiquity, and preserved medieval churches.

Nowadays, Nessebar has two parts, which are often referred to as the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town is located on a small peninsula that is 850 metres long and 350 metres wide, being connected to the mainland, where the New Town is located, by a narrow isthmus. Modern amenities and buildings in the New Town contrast with the Old Town’s antiquity.

The best time to visit Nessebar is during the summer, when it is bustling with life and all shops, restaurants, and little cafés are open, welcoming tourists.

Rila Monastery

One of Bulgaria’s most iconic locations, the Rila Monastery was founded in the 10^th century by St John of Rila, a hermit who was canonised by the Orthodox Church. Embedded with more than 15 centuries of history, the Monastery is an extremely popular landmark among Bulgarians of all ages.

After being burned down at the start of the 19^th century, the complex was entirely reconstructed from 1834 to 1862. This structure is now a prime example of the Bulgarian Renaissance or also called Revival – Vazrazhdane – (18^th – 19^th centuries), and stands as a powerful symbol of the resurgent Slavic cultural identity after centuries of Ottoman occupation.

Along with its rich cultural background, the monastery is also a home to an abundant library, storing approximately 250 manuscripts dating back from the 11^th to the 19^th centuries, as well as 9,000 old, printed editions and various Revival graphic prints. The site is also a treasury for culture lovers as it boasts a wide range of woodcarvings, ethnographic objects, and beautifully painted walls and Orthodox icons.

Typically, when tourists visit the Rila Monastery, they combine it with a hike to the Seven Rila Lakes, another of Bulgaria’s natural wonders, which, unfortunately, is not part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list.

Pirin National Park

Nestled in the Pirin Mountains, in southwest Bulgaria, Pirin National Park is an exceptionally beautiful region, where high mountain peaks contrast with meadows and rivers.

Originally established in 1962 as the Vihren Nature Reserve, Pirin National Park has undergone significant expansion over the years. It initially covered only 6,212 acres, encompassing the highest elevations of the Vihren Peak and Demyanishka regions. Today, the park is much larger at 40,000 acres and has been a protected UNESCO Heritage Site since 1983.

Within the park, more than 182 species of medicinal plants and more than 1,300 other types of plants can be found and admired. The rich diversity of flora supports a wide range of animals, including the European tree frog and the Hermann’s tortoise, which are included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Additionally, an important part of the park is the Vihren region, named after the highest peak in the Mountain – Vihren Peak, which rises to 2,914 metres above sea level. As the second-highest mountain in Bulgaria, it draws mountain lovers and adventure seekers to test their limits against its might.

Nearby is also the small winter resort town of Bansko, which is not only a hub for ski-lovers in the winter, but also a digital nomad destination and summer relaxation zone. Every year, at the end of June, the resort hosts the Bansko Nomad Fest. A week-long celebration of the remote lifestyle, offering interactive activities, conference sessions, and networking opportunities.

Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

One of the most significant monuments of Thracian culture in Bulgarian lands, the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak was accidentally discovered in 1944 by soldiers who were digging a trench in the northeastern part of town. The Thracians were an ancient Indo-European people who lived in Southeast Europe, leaving remarkable tombs and artefacts spread across Bulgaria’s lands.

The tomb’s occupants were unknown until 2008, when spectral analysis identified a Thracian ruler and one of his wives. Built in the late 4^th or early 3^rd century BC, this tomb is the only one in which the bones of a woman have been discovered together with the bones of a man and a sacrificial animal. Together with the bones, other ceramic and ritual vessels, as well as part of golden ornaments, were unearthed.  These items buried with the bodies show that the Thracians believed in the afterlife, thus sending the deceased with everything they possessed during their lifetime.

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979, after the organisation carefully inspected the condition of the frescoes. Just a few years before that, in 1974, the exact same replica of the tomb was built in close proximity to welcome visitors. This move reflects the decision to preserve the valuable frescoes.

This unique piece of art perfectly depicts the creative and crafty spirit of the ancient Thracians. According to UNESCO, “this monument is the only one of its kind anywhere in the world.”

Admission tickets for adults are €4, while students can enter for just €1. Those interested in hearing more can opt for a guided tour in either Bulgarian (€5) or a foreign language (€10). The landmark is open every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Madara Rider

The Madara Rider is a landmark part of the Madara Archaeological Reserve, located not far from the village with the same name in Northeastern Bulgaria. The Madara Rider is also close to the historic capitals of Pliska and Preslav, reflecting its cultural value.

The Madara Rider essentially depicts a figure of a knight, riding a horse, a dog following the horse, and a lion under the horse’s hooves. There are various opinions about what this visual represents. According to some, this is the triumph of a Bulgarian ruler over a defeated enemy. However, others believe that this is a deity that ancient Bulgarians worshipped. Generally, there is a unanimous belief that it is a symbol of the power of the First Bulgarian Empire (681-1018), a term used by historians to distinguish this early medieval state from other historical periods of the country. The inscriptions around the figure tell the story of important events concerning the reigns of the Khans ruling over the nation at that time.

Tickets could be purchased at the entrance, and usually are relatively inexpensive, allowing people of all backgrounds to experience Bulgaria’s wonders.

Final thoughts

While Bulgaria’s beauty and heritage certainly cannot be fit into one article and cannot be explored within one week, even a short visit offers a glimpse into its rich tradition, highlighting the country as a destination worth returning to.

With the country joining the Schengen Area and set to adopt the euro in 2026, travelling here will become even easier, opening the door for more visitors to discover its charm.

In the early 20^th century, Bulgarian scientist Stamen Grigorov discovered that a certain strain of bacillus was the basis for yoghurt. In recognition, the strain was called by the scientific community Lactobacillus bulgaricus. According to Prof. Dr. Penka Petrova, who is the director of the Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian yoghurt contains not only Lactobacillus bulgaricus but also other bacteria unique to the region, adding that they boost health and immunity.

According to a 2021 study, fermented dairy products from Bulgaria, such as yoghurt, are linked to longevity. For example, the yoghurt made with Lactobacillus bulgaricus is rich in protein, calcium, vitamins, and probiotics. “Bulgarian yoghurt may be the world’s first probiotic and has been used to treat various ailments. Each bacterial strain isolated from homemade yoghurt has distinct properties,” Petrova said.

Since 2009, after a Chinese dairy company imported the unique bacteria found in Bulgarian yoghurt, Momchilovtsi has seen an increase in Chinese tourists. The product, sold in China as Mosilian, is now a common sight in the local supermarkets. Chinese consumers are drawn to the yoghurt, which features the distinct Lactobacillus bulgaricus bacteria, for its nutritional value and connection to a long life.

Momchilovtsi’s yoghurt is popular not only for its health properties, but also because of the way it has been produced. The local livestock breeders use both cow and sheep milk, with seasonal changes in grazing influencing the texture and taste of the final product.

Now, the village has become a centre for preserving traditional yoghurt-making methods by introducing an annual yoghurt festival. Visitors can not only taste the yoghurt but also learn about the old-fashioned traditional production techniques that have been passed down through generations.

During the festival, locals and tourists mingle, exploring their common passion for Bulgarian yoghurt and culture. Additionally, on a stage in the village square, performers in traditional embroidered costumes sing folk songs and play bagpipes, bringing a festive mood to the visitors.

What are ‘Martenitsas’?

Martenitsas come in different shapes and sizes, but they are most commonly worn as bracelets. They can also take the form of pom-poms, necklaces, or other decorative designs that can be attached to one’s clothes. Traditionally, they are made of natural materials such as wool or cotton, further strengthening the connection to nature. The red thread represents health, bravery, and fertility, while the white symbolises purity, beauty, and new beginnings. Often, people also include additional decorations such as beads or small shells when crafting a martenitsa.

One of the most popular iterations of the martenitsa is a pair of small yarn dolls. They are called Pizho and Penda, who are folklore characters. Pizho was the bravest young man in his village, while Penda was the most beautiful lady. This is why Pizho is traditionally white, while Penda is red. However, a darker tale tells the story of a childless couple who were blessed with a son and daughter — Pizho and Penda — after offering shelter to an old woman who predicted the birth of their children. When the old lady later returned to claim them, the mother tried to protect them. However, the witchturned Penda into a cherry tree, and Pizho froze while hugging the tree. Upon his return home, the father discovered a cherry tree whose branches were intertwined with white and red threads. As a result, there are different versions of the martenitsa, with Penda sometimes represented in red and Pizho in white.

The ritual of wearing and removing Martenitsas

Bulgarians wear their martenitsa until they see a stork, a migratory bird whose return signals the true arrival of spring. According to local superstitions, if the stork is flying, the person who sees it will be hardworking and productive throughout the year. However, if the stork is in its nest, it suggests that the person will be lazy. Once a stork is spotted, people remove their martenitsa and tie it to a blooming tree, which is believed to bring health and luck to the tree. As a result, it is common to see trees across Bulgaria adorned with red and white threads during March.

Who is Baba Marta?

The name Baba Marta comes from the Bulgarian words “baba” (баба) meaning grandmother and “Mart” (Март) meaning March. Baba Marta is also a mythical figure in Bulgarian folklore, often portrayed as an elderly woman with a fickle temperament, much like the unpredictable weather of early spring. When she is happy, the sun shines, but when she is angry, cold winds and snow return.

Some people say that she is the sister of two other characters, Big Sechko and Little Sechko, who represent the months of January and February. January is called Big Sechko because it has more days than February. Interestingly, Sechko comes from the Bulgarian word for cutting (seka – сека).

In the past, people would go to the forests to gather wood for warmth. Sometimes, even work in the fields was “cut” because it was too cold for villagers to work. Others say that when Baba Marta shakes her feather blankets, feathers fall, which are believed to be the last snowflakes of winter.

Chronology

The idea of renaming the airport was first proposed in 2009 by a Bulgarian journalist. However, for years, Bulgarian authorities took no concrete action to implement the change. Other names, including Zhelyu Zhelev, Bulgaria’s first democratically elected president, were considered, but no final decision was made.

In December 2024, the Minister of Transport and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences formally prepared a renaming proposal. The academy supported the change, stating that research confirmed Levski as a historical figure deeply respected by the majority of Bulgarians.

Official Renaming Ceremony

On 19 February 2025, a special official renaming ceremony was held to commemorate the change. The event was opened by Jesus Caballero, the CEO of SOF Connect, the concessionaire company managing the airport.”The naming is not only a tribute to the past, but also a look into the future,” Caballero said during the ceremony.

Among the distinguished guests were high-ranking government officials, including the Minister of Transport, Grozdan Karadzhov, as well as historians and cultural figures. Their presence emphasised the historical importance of the renaming.

From “Vrazhdebna Airport” to “Vasil Levski Airport”

Until 17 February 2025, the airport was officially known as Vrazhdebna Airport, named after a nearby suburb of Sofia. However, the name “Vrazhdebna”, which translates to “Hostile”, was considered by many to be an unsuitable title for Bulgaria’s busiest international gateway.

The choice of Vasil Levski as the new name carries deep historical and emotional significance for Bulgarians. Levski’s revolutionary ideas and tireless fight for national liberation in the 19^th century helped lay the groundwork for Bulgaria’s independence from Ottoman rule. Though he was captured and executed in 1873, his ideals of freedom, equality, and justice continue to inspire generations of Bulgarians.

The name “Vasil Levski” has already been prominently displayed throughout the airport, reinforcing his cultural significance and ensuring his legacy remains visible to both locals and international visitors.

The airport, which serves as Bulgaria’s main international gateway, now carries the name of a man whose vision and sacrifice helped shape the country’s modern identity. The decision to rename it is not just a tribute to the past, but a reminder of Bulgaria’s ongoing commitment to the values of freedom and unity.

While there are opportunities to explore the mountains, the coastlines, and other regions popular amongst locals, there are several landmarks you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. Here’s a short list:

1. Krushuna waterfalls

The Krushuna Waterfalls are located in northern Bulgaria, near the village of Krushuna, Letnitsa Municipality, approximately a 30-minute drive from Lovech. This hidden gem, mostly popular among locals, offers an eco-trail for nature enthusiasts. Formed by numerous travertines, the cascades offer a spot for memorable experiences. Travertine in itself is a form of limestone found around mineral springs and more specifically hot springs.

There are several waterfalls, with the highest one being 15 metres tall. Visitors can follow the eco-trail leading to most of the falls and explore not only the waterfalls but also nearby springs and rock formations.

While being “active” throughout the whole year, the Krushuna waterfalls are most suitable for a visit during the spring, when the surrounding landscape is green and blooming, and the falls are at their fullest.

2. Belogradchik rocks

Sculpted by time the Belogradchik rocks are one of Bulgaria’s unique natural landmarks. These rock formations resemble figures, fortresses, pyramids, and other shapes, inspiring myths and legends.

Since 2011, this site has been on Bulgaria’s tentative list for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.  Interestingly, the Belogradchik Rocks were also nominated in 2007 for the global New 7 Wonders of Nature, and for a long time, they were a leader in their category.

The vastness of the sculptures spans more than 30km in length and 5km in width. According to research, the Belogradchik rocks started forming around 230 million years ago, during the creation of the Balkan Mountains, as a result of shifting tectonic layers.

According to an old legend, some of the rocks tell the story of love, sorrow, and petrification. The tale is about a young nun named Vitinia, and her forbidden love, who were petrified together among the towering rocks. Their figures stand amidst the Belogradchik Rocks, telling a tale of love that defied all odds.

3. Devil’s Throat Cave and Trigrad Gorge

An immense part of Bulgaria’s picturesque landscape, the Trigrad Gorge is a canyon in the Rhodope Mountains that stretches approximately 7km.  At its bottom flows the Trigrad River, whose water sculpted the gorge’s walls millions of years ago.

This formation leads to a mysterious cave, known as the Devil’s Throat. The name comes from the shape of the former entrance (now – exit), which resembles a devil’s head. In the past, the cave was called Klokotnik (from klokot – a Bulgarian word used to describe the sound of pouring water), inspired by the rumbling sounds of water echoing through the entrance. The cave was formed by the collapse of underground rock layers. This has created a steep and dramatic descent. Its main chamber houses the highest underground waterfall in the Balkans, which is an interesting sight for visitors.

The Devil’s Throat has inspired numerous legends, dating back to the time of the Thracians, populating this land in the past. One famous myth claims that it was through this cave that Orpheus descended into Hades’ underground kingdom to save his beloved Eurydice.

4. 7 Rila Lakes

The Seven Rila Lakes are situated within the Rila National Park, the largest protected area in Bulgaria. Nestled in the Rila mountain range, the Seven Rila Lakes offer an alpine adventure not only for experienced hikers but also for beginners. The hiking trail to the top covers around 10 kilometres, so it is advisable to dedicate an entire day to this experience.

Once at the top, visitors can relax and take in the scenic view of the lakes, each of which has a unique name reflecting its characteristics. For example, the lake that is located at the highest altitude is named “The Tear” because of the transparency of its waters. Additionally, “The Kidney” is the lake with the steepest banks of the whole group, having the shape of a kidney bean.

5. Melnik Earth pyramids

The Melnik Earth Pyramids are a year-round destination that was recognized as a natural landmark in Bulgaria in 1960. These geological formations are among the most impressive natural landmarks in the country, attracting both national and international tourists.

Anastas Karchev, the announcement follows Svilengrad’s official application for the Zero Waste Cities Certification (ZWCC), provided by the capacity–building hub Mission Zero Academy (MiZA).  MiZA and Zero Waste Europe, together with the local zero waste organisation, Za Zemiata, will guide and support Svilengrad in its zero waste journey, helping to achieve its goals by 2025.

In addition to the general waste management commitments intrinsic to the certification process, Svelingrad will put a specific focus on textile and construction waste and will introduce separate collection systems in the surrounding villages.

After the establishment of a Zero Waste Advisory Board a few years back, the municipality now aims to:

• Achieve 90% diversion of municipal solid waste;
• Reach a target of 99 kg/resident/year in 2025 for the annual amount of residual waste generated;
• Reduce the volume of municipal solid waste sent to incineration by building awareness around sustainable alternative solutions;
• Increase awareness of zero waste and circular economy principles within its community, using a wide range of communication methods and channels.
