1. Training pilots, crew and ground staff

In aviation, nothing is left to chance and safety is at all times the highest priority. The training department has worked out a thorough and intensive training program to make sure that their pilots are ready to take off again. 

At the beginning of April the first group began training. Each pilot takes approximately one month to complete the program and it includes 14 hours of theoretical training, including self-study and classroom training to review all flight and aircraft procedures, 12 hours of simulator and 10 to 20 flights with an instructor, depending on the experience of the pilot.
Last but not least, every pilot performs a line check before they are released to fly on their own again. There are 150 pilots who will go through this complete training and they expect to finish the training by summer. The rest 400 pilots have been training regularly. 

As for the cabin crew, on 1 May, 130 cabin colleagues who have been in full temporary unemployment will gradually be retrained for flying duties within seven to ten days of refresher courses, depending on the type of flights they operate (short haul or long haul), and several familiarization flights to have all safety procedures and Covid-related hygiene measures fresh in mind when they welcome our passengers on board again.

2. Getting the aircrafts ready

As of today, 21 of 38 aircraft are operational. In order to increase their flight offers, they need to get more aircrafts back in the air to prepare for summer.

Some aircrafts have been parked since March 2020 and to reactivate them, the maintenance teams go through thorough procedures, checking every nook and cranny of the fuselage and moving parts, and doing test runs on all electronic systems. They test the engines, replace life vests and other safety equipment if they are expired, and get the cabin ready with a thorough cleaning. Finally, they run a test flight to give the aircraft a final GO for operations. The de-storage process takes approximately 200 man-hours per aircraft.

3. Hygiene measures

Welcoming more passengers means that it is important to emphasize that the airlines continue to apply the same Covid-10 measures as before. These include a mandatory face mask during the entire flight for every passenger as of six years old, row by row boarding and deboarding to avoid queues in the aircraft, extra disinfection of the aircraft and of course proper hand hygiene. All aircrafts are equipped with HEPA filters that continuously supply clean air onboard.

As usual, passengers who feel unwell are asked not to travel, to protect the health of other passengers and our crew. As many countries still have specific restrictions, passengers are asked to check the requirements before they travel. And of course, they continue to offer rebookable tickets so our customers have maximum flexibility to change their travel plans and they can book their flights with peace of mind.

The introduction of superconducting materials can lower electrical resistance, meaning that electrical current can supply power without energy loss. When coupled with liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures (-253 degrees Celsius) electrical systems can be cooled in order to significantly increase the performance of the overall electric propulsion system.

Airbus will use ASCEND to explore the feasibility of these promising technologies in order to optimize propulsion architecture ready for low-emission and zero-emission flight. Results are expected to show the potential for component weight and electrical losses to be at least halved, as the volume and complexity of systems installation is reduced, as well as a reduction in voltage to below 500V, compared to current systems. 

ASCEND will assess electric architectures from several hundred kilowatts to multi-megawatt applications with and without liquid hydrogen on board.

Airbus will design and build the demonstrator over the next three years at its E-Aircraft System House. Solutions that could be adapted to turboprop, turbofan and hybrid propeller engines will be tested and evaluated by the end of 2023. It will support Airbus’ decision making-process for the type of propulsion system architecture required for future aircraft. ASCEND is also expected to support performance improvements on existing and future propulsion systems across the entire Airbus portfolio, including helicopters, eVTOLs, as well as regional and single-aisle aircraft.

The demonstrator is hosted within Airbus UpNext, an Airbus subsidiary created to give future technologies a development fast-track by building demonstrators at speed and scale, evaluating, maturing, and validating new products and services that encompass radical technological breakthroughs.

In 2017, knowing that Charlie’s father had land in the Essex area that they could use, they decided to buy something original to remodel. Before reaching the unusual decision of the bus, they explored the most common options: caravans, mobile homes, portable homes. But when the idea and the option to transform one of London’s mythical red buses into their new home came up, they never went back. Charlie and Luke decided to pay a small fee to Charlie’s dad to be able to have the bus parked inside the property.

The renovations lasted more than a year, but in the end, it turned out incredibly cheap. They spent about €18 to €20k for all the items needed for their house, plus an approximately €3k for the abandoned bus. Their total expenses came up to about 22 thousand euros in total.

Of course, in order to achieve all this on such a limited budget, they received a lot of support from their family and friends, each in their specialty or within their abilities contributed to the couple’s dream project.

The end result was absolutely incredible. So much so that the proud couple, who live with their two pet goats took to Instagram named their account Double Decker Home – literally, a two-story house shared wonderful pictures of their new home with the world, and they have received a good amount of attraction.

On the ground floor, there is a living room with a small wood-burning fireplace, and a kitchen with an oven, microwave, fridge, and washing machine. The couple also managed to acclimate the space with air conditioning and heating, knowing that the first winter, without this equipment, was difficult. On the top floor of the bus is the improvised, but super stylish, bedroom with a bed, bedside tables, and television. There is also an incredible bathtub and a closet. This year they also installed something very important: wi-fi.

Last week, the country’s immigration department proposed the law in a meeting. The proposal was presented as an attempt to to stop women trafficking. And also, any woman under the age of 40 would need permission to travel to Africa or any Middle East destination for the first time.

The proposed law is being criticized unanimously and hundreds of Nepali women gathered at the Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu to protest against the same. A women’s march was organized to highlight other major issues of female abuse and women rights.

“Instead of empowering and building the capacity of women, as well as the rest of the emigrant labor workforce, they are being regressive, unconstitutional, not to say ridiculous.”

1. Nosferatu 1921

One of the oldest Dracula films that were filmed in 1921; at the time there was no such thing as a “horror movie.” When German director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau started shooting for “Nosferatu,” the vampire Count Orlok played by Max Schreck was one of the scariest characters ever featured in a silent movie at the time. The gloomy, bald figure with bat-ears, thick eyebrows, and long canines could have come directly from the depths of hell.

2. ‘Dracula’ 1931

In this film, Hungarian Actor Bela Lugosi was the first to portray Count Dracula on screen. On February 4, 1931, director Tod Browning’s film “Dracula” premiered in the US, with Lugosi as the cultured Transylvanian count who rolls his R’s while speaking. Back then, this was the first vampire film to fully play around with the sexual allure of the vampire.

3. Hammer Horror Dracula 1958

After a few years of devolving into parody, Dracula became not only scary again but impossibly regal thanks to Sir Christopher Lee. Pushing the boundaries of what could be shown in British cinema in the ’50s, Lee played the role of the blood-sucking monster at least 10 times in very different films, including the Hammer Horror series.

5. Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1992

In terms of capturing the novel’s feverish intensity and Gothic melodrama, Francis Ford Coppola’s take came the closest. The aesthetics of Bram Stoker’s Dracula do most of the work, with achingly detailed costumes and exclusively practical effects that inspire the drama with a hazy quality akin to the space between being awake and dreaming. As unnecessary as the added romantic subplot with Dracula and Mina is, it helps to deepen the story’s overwhelming emotional core. Everyone made jokes about Keanu Reeves’s atrocious English accent and the less-than-stellar sexual chemistry between Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, but when a film looks this good, who cares?

6. ‘Dracula: Dead and Loving It’ 1995

A film filled with emotions of love and drama played by American actor Mel Brooks as the vampire in the movie which he also directed. This film, which is a spoof of Stoker’s novel, had the message that Dracula isn’t scary at all, but rather a clumsy womanizer.

7. Shadow of the Vampire 2000

Another homage to Murnau: This film by director Elias Mehrige is a fictionalized documentary about the making of “Nosferatu.” Willem Dafoe plays the role of Max Schreck, who embodied the vampire in the original, while John Malkovich portrays the German director.

8. The Twilight Saga 2008

The most recent and well known modern world adaption,  the “Twilight” movies, which is completely a different take on the Transylvanian vampire. Starring Robert Pattison as the vampire and Kristen Stewart as his love interest who is human, the “Twilight” series are mostly about a young man who falls in love and the problems teenagers face — with a slightly bloody twist.

 Linden van Bemmel dazzled everyone with an impromptu performance on the icy Amsterdam canals.

The performance was so amazing that it broke the internet while she hoped that the ice beneath her elegant pirouettes didn’t break. Van Bemmel was able to navigate her way gracefully til the end.

Another man even put himself at risk when the ice cracked, but the situation was resolved and, lacking points for the artistic note, the Dutchman compensated with courage when he decided to skate with his bare torso.

Twenty-year-old Linden van Bemmel treated passers-by to a full skating show while wearing a stunning leotard on the Prinsengracht canal in the North Holland province.

]]> Every day Leonor Freitas contemplates her vineyard. There are moments, such as when it’s time for pruning the vines, where it seems to be nothing left. But in spring the green returns, and with it, the precious grape.

Then, nature completes its cycle and says goodbye in shades of bronze and red until the next spring. From the balcony, Leonor sees the vineyard and says that “it seems like it speaks and says hello to her, every morning”.

We at Travel Tomorrow certainly loved sitting at this table, tasting the wines and enjoying the scenery.

There are already 4 generations of women who carry forward the destiny of Casa Ermelinda Freitas, a name that represents, according to Leonor, “bonds of love for the land and capacity for work”.

A name affirmed by the affection towards its the employees, who are treated like family, as well as by the several awards won, one of them being the Best Wine in the World, a distinction earned in 2008.

1. Once upon a time, she was a city girl

Once upon a time, this “the city girl”, lived in Setúbal and earned her degree in social service. She had a well-organized life and only returned to her family home, Ermelinda Freitas, on weekends or holidays.

But when her ancestors were no longer able to take care of the place, Leonor shivered when she thought about the possibility of selling the property. In the end, she left everything behind to take care of the estate.

From her grandmother she received the love for the land. In fact, all her ancestors left a mark on her, to emphasize the value ​​of honesty, cultivate the art of welcoming, and always have a feeling of sharing and affection for the workers — they are treated like family. It is for all these reasons that Leonor believes that “what made Casa Ermelinda a success was love”.

Leonor also says that “when the city girl came back full of dreams, most people thought that I was excited but that I couldn’t take it. And there were also those who didn’t want to do business with me because I’m a woman.”

However, Leonor had the acumen to surround herself with the right people, who believed in her success. She wanted to be helped, and to avoid failure.

The businesswoman says that she often thought that “it is a question of rounding the thorns, and when the rose is flowering, one must have the humility to know that it will not always be like this.”

2. 2005 Ermelinda Freitas Syrah: The Best Wine in the World

The path was filled with obstacles, that were always there, but but also with medals and prizes.

The most important one happened in 2008 with a 2005 wine, when Ermelinda Freitas Syrah asserted itself as wine of unique quality and won a blind tasting with more than 3,600 wines. The competition consisted of successive tasting panels that took several weeks.

This distinction led Portugal and Casa Ermelinda Freitas to have an international projection of much greater impact.

There are two grape varieties in the area that Leonor distinguishes: Castelão in red wines and the Fernão Pires white ones, and she says that “it has been important to show that wine is not all the same and that each zone has its particularities.”

Leonor recalls that “wine is a product of excellence, even in terms of health” and highlights the wines Dona Ermelinda Grande Reserva red, Dona Ermelinda Reserva white and Moscatel Superior purple, which are unique in Portugal, and only exist in Setúbal.

The businesswoman also says that “Setubal has so-called poor sands, but that they are fabulous, because they adapt to the culture of all types of wine.”

Give to Society what Society gave to us

Leonor Freitas says that she seeks to give back to society everything she received from society. Thus she created a social responsibility project with a wine called: “A Vida de um Vinho”, whose benefits go to Caritas.

Each year on palindrome-like dates, she organizes fund raising events. For example, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011, she invited 11 individuals interested in giving back to society. In the following years, the event has been repeated using the same type of palindrome-like dates. Mário Rocha joined this project creating paintings, one painting each year.

In addition, Leonor adds that “a book was written telling this story, and these bottles and pictures were sold. The amount went to help the improvement of homes for the elderly in the area, and another painting was to support O Sol Crescente, a kindergarten that has financial difficulties.”

3. What is new for 2021

In 2020, Casa Ermelinda marked 100 years, but all the celebrations had to be canceled due to the covid-19 outbreak. They even had bottles stored in a cellar in Mira de Aire, but it was not possible to proceed with the events.

Leonor emphasizes that “at this moment our concern is our employees. Every week the red cross comes here and tests people.”

For 2021 Casa Ermelinda Freitas will create some initiatives that do not involve any type of risk. The biggest news is that they bought a vineyard in Minho and will launch the wines produced from this new vineyard.

In addition, on Father’s Day, Casa Ermelinda Freitas suggests to drink the wine Dona Ermelinda Grande Reserva, to mark this special date. It is a rare and unique wine, very intense, that is only produced in exceptional years. It requires delicacies of great complexity, to allow the perfect balance, ideal to offer to our loved ones, or on special days like this.

Leonor leaves a piece of advice: “The choice of a wine will always depend on the meal, the time, and the person we are with. There are wines for every moment. We achieve this by having the best wine at the best price.”

In conclusion, Leonor Freitas emphasizes: “Right now I want to prepare the new generation for the challenges that lie ahead”. And to replicate the journey until now, taken by the women of her family, it will be essential for her daughter, Joana Freitas, to assume the responsibility for this task.
