1. Sable Island, Nova Scotia

Sable Island, known as “shipwreck and wild horse island”, is in a region called the Graveyard of the Atlantic and its length is only roughly 42 kilometers. It however harbors about 475 sunken ships.

Another strange phenomenon is that it is home to more than 400 horses living on the island, which is a true mystery, since no-one understands how they survive here as there are no trees or grass, just sand and rainwater.

2. La Isla de las Muñecas

Situated in the region of Xochimico, near Mexico City, La Isla de las Muñecas, or Dolls Island, is home to an eery legend involving many dolls scattered around the island.

It is considered a sanctuary, dedicated to a child that died there under mysterious circumstances. This story has however never been properly confirmed. We only know that, in the fifties, a very religious man moved to the island and, according to him, the dolls were supposed to be a protection against “bad spirits”. Don Julian lived on this island for over fifty years, until he drowned precisely on the same spot where the little girl is believed to have also died.

3. Palmyra, North Pacific

Palmyra is not even considered an island, but more like an atoll, which means that it’s a ring-shaped oceanic island with a structure made of corals and other boneless creatures, encircling a lagoon with no apparent connection with the rocky crust.

Despite its apparent beauty given by the marvelous coral reefs that depict it as a lost paradise, they call it the “cursed island”, due to inexplicable paranormal activity occurring on it. Based on multiple reports, there have been numerous cases of supernatural events, unresolved mysteries and inexplicable facts happening here since 1798. Those who have visitied the island have described strange forces as well as the feeling of being constantly followed during their trips.

Palmyra was also the scene of the murder of Mac Graham and Eleanor LaVerne, who arrived on the atoll the same week an ex-prisoner did so too. The man killed the couple and stole their sail ship. Graham’s body was never found and his wife’s bones only appeared six years later.

4. Isola La Gaiola, Italy

Isola La Gaiola in Italy is known as the haunted island because of the adverse events that have been happening to whomever visits it.

From its first four owners, three have suffered tragic deaths (drowning, heart attack and the third ended up in a mental hospital). The last ones are either in jail or have committed suicide. Others had their children kidnapped. All these stories have contributed to the island’s far from the best reputation.

5. Deer Isle, United States

The region of Saint Lawrence River is known for its staggering number of islands and Deer Island is one of them.

The island is known for hosting a secret society for undergraduates of the University of Yale, alumni of which include George W. Bush or John Kerry. Only a few details regarding the precise venue were officially revealed, though. Its exact location remains a mystery to this day.

In the nineteenth century, the granite industry flourished in Deer Island, its quarries provided granite for structures such as the Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Academy, the Manhattan Bridge or President John F. Kennedy’s tomb.

In John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, Deer Island was a stopping point for the author, upon insistence that he visited Eleanor Brace’s hut in Dunham’s Point from his literary agent. And so he did, writing: “One doesn’t have to be sensitive to feel the strangeness of Deer Isle”.

This isle was chosen by musician Dan Fogelberg and his wife Jean as their last home, also having died there in 2007. This island, was still source of inspiration for painter Fairfield Porter.

6. Tashirojima Island, the “Isle of Cats”

The Isle of Cats is in Japan. It is home to just about a hundred inhabitants, but cats outnumber them by far. 

The cats arrived here when a rat infestation hit the area in the eighteenth century, but even after the problem was solved, a fisherman decided to create a sanctuary to the felines and the community has largely grown since then. A fisherman sees cats as a sign of good luck and therefore takes care and feeds all the cats in the region. A curiosity is that, if you’re interested in sleeping on the island, you can just rent one of its logs, precisely built in the shape of cats.

7. Okunoshima Island, or “Rabbits Isle”

Okunoshima Island is in Japan and is known as Rabbit Isle. Its history is at least curious, since during Second World War, this island was the site of a chemical weapon plant. Between 1929 and 1945, over six thousand tons of poisonous gas were produced here.

It is believed that rabbits were brought here by students in the seventies. Nowadays, the island is home to hundreds of rabbits and welcomes many visitors due to its beautiful beaches, its abandoned factories and, of course, the impressive rabbit warren.

8. Queimada Grande Island, Brazil

Situated some 145 km from the city of São Paulo, Queimada Grande is known as Snake Island, because it has snakes of all kinds.

The number of snakes on the island is estimated to be from 2000 to 5000 snakes of the jararaca-ilhoa species, one of the most poisonous in the world. The animals feed themselves from migratory birds and disembarking on the island is forbidden due to the high risk.

9. Christmas Island, Australian territory

Known as “Crab Island”, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is home to over 120 million of these crustaceans that have always travelled there on a true journey of migration. During the rain season, they walk over eight kilometers to the ocean.

In 1989, a roughly 1600-hectare national park was created with the goal of protecting this species of red crab, the scientific name of which being Gecarcoidea natalis. This park covers 60% of the island, mainly in the rainforest area and its activity is monitored by the Australian Nature Conservation Agency.

The island’s recent history is linked to migrations and its repression, since it became one of main passage points for refugees that try to reach Australia from Iraq, Afghanistan or Sri Lanka and on route through Indonesia. Since the called “Pacific Solution” was implemented, the island has hosted Australia‘s largest detention center, destined to arrest migrants who risk their lives landing illegally while searching for a better life. The island’s coastlines have witnessed tragic shipwrecks that sadly cost many hundreds of lives in the last ten years.

The carnation revolution that took place on April 25 1974 impressed the world because violence was avoided. The Portuguese revolution influenced other revolutions in countries, such as Spain, Venezuela or Brazil, and had the power to end the dictatorship and give Portugal reasons to think about a future in which it could fly. Today the Portuguese live in freedom thanks to the courage of a group of brave soldiers and captains.

1. Was April 25th the first date planned for the coup?

No. An attempted coup d’État took place on March 16, 1974. On that day, a military column left the Caldas da Rainha regiment bound to Lisbon, accompanied by the Lamego, Mafra and Vendas Novas regiments. But a rebellion in Lamego made the rest unwilling to take any chances and the mission was aborted, while the military arrived in Santarém. After returning to Caldas da Rainha, the military were arrested.

2. How many years did the Estado Novo last?

Established in 1933, by António de Oliveira Salazar, the Estado Novo replaced the Military Dictatorship that had been going on since 1926. Salazar put an end to it when he was elected President of the Council. The policy was similar to the one which existed in Germany, Italy and Spain, with the difference being its association with the church, always on the side of the Government. Even after Marcelo Caetano assumed the position of President of the Council in 1968, the Estado Novo, although with less strength, continued. The regime fell 41 years later, in 1974. Portugal lived 48 years of dictatorship.

3. How did the idea of ​​a military coup occur?

A few years before the revolution, Portugal started a colonial war and the Government showed no intention of bringing its troops back, whilst the military did not want to continue to go to Africa to fight a war they did not believe in. Then, the Armed Forces Movement was created, no more than a group of soldiers clandestinely considering a way to end the dictatorship.

The military coup was not even the first option, but it ended up being the chosen one. It was intended that the Armed Forces Movement would advance over Lisbon and be able to surround the main points of the Government. Many movements did this in several cities, to form command posts across the country. In Lisbon, the Pontinha Regiment was prepared to start hostilities, with Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho in command accompanied by five officers. One of the main movements came from the Practical Cavalry School of Santarém, commanded by Salgueiro Maia, whose mission was to occupy Terreiro do Paço. However the movement was diverted to Largo do Carmo, where Marcelo Caetano and two other ministers were refugees.

4. The revolution started with a flat tire

This memory was reported to Efe Agency by Vasco Lourenço, president of the 25 of April Association created to keep alive the spirit of the movement that created the basis for the return to democracy in Portugal. He says that “they were returning from one of the first meetings and a tire was flat. It was two in the morning and while changing the tire, he told Otelo that they weren’t going to solve anything with bureaucracies, and they should do a coup and call elections. Otelo’s words remained in History: ‘But do you also think so? This is my dream!”

5. There was a radio signal for the troops to leave on the 25th of April

At 10:55 pm on the 24th, at associated emitters of Lisbon, the animator of the radio said: “It is five minutes to 23:00, with you, Paulo de Carvalho, with the Eurofestival song of 74, “Depois do Adeus.” This was the first signal given to the troops that everything was ready to go.
The second signal was transmitted by Rádio Renascença, between 12:00 am and 1:00 am, if everything was operational. At 12:25 am, the first verse of the song “Grândola Vila Morena” by Zeca Afonso was read. The music was broadcast, and then, the signal was given for the troops to advance to Lisbon.

6. Why are carnations a symbol of the April revolution?

There are several stories, but there is one of which there are photographic records. The carnations were abundant because they were from that time of year. Celeste Caeiro worked at Franjinhas, a restaurant in the center of Lisbon, which that day celebrated the anniversary of its inauguration, a party where flowers could not be missing. However, upon arriving at work, Celeste found the door closed and was informed by the boss that he would not open it because a revolution was underway. So, she took the carnations with her to Rossio, where the military tanks awaited further orders from Salgueiro Maia. A soldier asked Celeste for a cigarette but as she was not a smoker, she offered him the flower. The soldier accepted the carnation and placed it in the barrel of the shotgun, a symbolic gesture worth imitation by his comrades-in-arms who followed in his footsteps, leading Celeste to distribute all the carnations she carried with her.

7. Did a bombing occur?

On the morning of the 25th, the commander of the frigate Almirante Gago Coutinho was ordered to open fire on the terrace of the palace, an order that was not carried out as there were many people there as well as several boats in the vicinity. Shots should still have been launched into the air, but as the frigate only had army ammunition, no one wanted to carry out the order, otherwise it would create chaos in the area. Although they refused to comply with a higher order, the lawsuit was eventually shelved.

8. Was April 25th a victimless revolution?

Although it was a profoundly peaceful coup, it is untrue that there were no fatalities during the revolution. It was at the end of the day when the people of Lisbon demanded the end of the political police (PIDE), resulting in their leaders shooting at the population. This attack resulted in four deaths, the only victims of this revolution, and several wounded.

9. When were the political prisoners released?

Although the government surrendered on the 25th, it was a day later that military forces managed to occupy Forte de Caxias, one of the political prisons with the most detainees. Then, on the 27th of April, it was the turn of the Peniche Fort to be released. This was where only one escape from prison during the dictatorship had occurred, in 1960, led by several prisoners including the well-known politician Álvaro Cunhal. Tarrafal prison in Cape Verde, established in 1936 during a reorganization process of the Estado Novo prison system with the objective of imprisoning political and social prisoners, also known as the “death camp”, was only released on 30 April.

10. Was the CIA involved in the preparations for the revolution?

There is no evidence that the American agency was related to the revolution. However a book published in 2008, Carlucci vs. Kissinger – The USA and the Portuguese Revolution, by Bernardino Gomes and Tiago Moreira de Sá, showed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was attentive to the movements of the Portuguese military and the possibility of a revolution. In the same book it is also shown that the Americans knew of the imminence of the revolution, but were nevertheless caught by surprise, a revelation made by Frank Carlucci, the United States Ambassador in Portugal in 1975. Carlucci declared that any action would have been to help the victory of the democratic forces, which had come to power.

Delicate and gracious beings, they are called the messengers of the souls, in a sense that, when a loved one ceases to exist, there is a higher chance of being visited by a butterfly. At least that is what Turks believe , whereas to the Japanese the butterfly is a symbol of women. They obviously represent metamorphosis, often connected to evolutive transformations.

Beautiful and mysterious, they have fascinating particularities that I got to know at the butterfly house in Parque Urbano da Quinta da Rana in Cascais with a format similar with that of a cocoon. Open the wings of imagination and come fly with me into the fascinating world of butterflies.

2. The Butterfly House in Parque Urbano de Quinta da Rana

Developed by João Pedro Cardoso da Conceição, the Borboletário is a unique space that makes incursions into nature at certain moments of the year for visitors to understand the species that populate the locations, which ones are at risk, and understand their behaviors.

I am welcomed there by Diogo Rama da Silva, biologist. With a wide smile and showing his love for what he does, this biologist tells us of the importance of education and awareness at schools that are frequently welcomed in this place and for which they do guided tours, as well as of the curiosities that make butterflies such beautiful and special beings.

Diogo says that “in the world, the official number is 180 thousand species, but it’s considered that they have already reached the 220 thousand.” As for Portugal, for now we have 2500 species decorating our forests and gardens.

3. Metamorphosis

The butterflies’ lifecycle goes from the eggs are left by the female on host plants that worms will eat after they are born. Each species feeds from several plants or from a single vegetable variety.

When the worm hatches, it is very small and goes through different stages, modifying its skin. Later, once it stores enough reserves, it looks for a place to fix itself, be it on plants, stones, tree trunks or on the floor.

Once it makes it into a chrysalis, the worm fixes itself and sheds the skin, producing a new harder and more resistant one, which protects it against predators and a more adverse climate. It is here that magic happens… Here occurs the metamorphosis, a total transformation in which the worm’s tissues and organs decompose themselves to make room for the new structures that will create an adult insect.

Some species form a cocoon to protect the chrysalis, such as the famous silkworm, and at the end of all these stages, the butterfly breaks out from the chrysalis, settles itself again, uses its blood to pump and grow its own wings, and when the wings are dry, it is then time to fly, find a partner, and start a new life cycle.

There I stand, listening to Diogo as he tells me curiosities about this incredible insect, made up from a pair of antennae and 6 legs, similar to other insects…

4. Reproduction and life goals

Butterflies take up to 5 days to lay eggs, which can be between 300 and 400. They drink a sugary and watery liquid that is found inside the flowers, for which they use a kind of a straw, in a tongue that rolls itself out as they prepare to feed themselves.

They are pollinators and, without them, many plants would risk going extinct, as well as many animals that feed from these plants. In nature, everything is connected and mankind should be more aware of what surrounds them.

5. Belle Dame, Vanessa Cardui, the marathonist

With a name that resembles Royalty, this magnificent marathonist can fly for 12.500 kilometers and then return to her point of departure to meet her family once again. Butterflies fly from 7 to 50 kilometers per hour, with a capacity to reach up to 60 km/h.

Larger butterflies like Belle Dame are, by norm, those that also live longer. The life expectancy of most butterflies is not long, starting from just seven days of life, while Belle Dame can live up to twelve months.

6. The inebriated butterfly

Charaxes jasius, also called the strawberry tree butterfly, is the widest one in Portugal, with a head resembling that of a little dragon. It has an interesting particularity, “due to the alcohol from this fruit that it loves, it is often inebriated. It is common to see it fly in an uncoordinated manner”, says the biologist laughing.

7. The skull butterfly, or death’s-head hawkmoth: a famous character

The death’s-head hawkmoth (Acherontia Atropos), had its rise to fame in 1991 on the popular film “The Silence of the Lambs”, directed by Jonathan Demme. It is one of the most popular seventh art productions. Its billboard, where we can see Jodie Foster with a skull butterfly over her mouth, has become an absolute icon.

“The Silence of the Lambs” uses the drawing of a butterfly’s torax, a skull that Salvador Dali immortalized on seven naked women and disposed in sexual positions. These women’s bodies make up the shape of a skull, a glimpse of which can be seen through some form of optical illusion.

The meaning of the skull crosses many civilizations of the world, being connected to the idea of death. Its meaning is still likened to disease that serves to remind us that life is short. It still shows an implicit symbol of wisdom, exaltation and domain, since the cranium is the top of the human body, and this skull is represented in this butterfly.

Besides being a symbol of happiness, beauty and soul, it also represents nature and renovation. In the Christian ideology, this idea is intimately intertwined with life, death as well as spiritual resurrection.

The Acherontia Atropos or skull butterfly can reach a wingspan of about 130 milimeters, which makes it one of the largest and heaviest species of butterflies in the world. She lives especially in the region of the Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean, in the Azores, in Portugal and in the Canary Islands in Spain.

8. Queen Alexandra

Queen Alexandra was named as such for being a butterfly that can reach 28 centimeters, the largest in its reign, when we speak of daytime butterflies. Moths, which are the nighttime ones, can reach even larger sizes. Butterflies are measured by the size they display when they open their wings.

1. What to visit in Monchique?

1.1. The Village

It is a beautiful and winding village, with narrow streets and colorful houses that are its trademark and gives it a strong character. It is very quiet and the central square, with plenty of fountains and flowers, makes it very beautiful. As you walk around the village you will also find some hidden alleys that are so interesting to photograph.

Near the town’s center you can find the Matriz church or Mother Church, built in the sixteenth century and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. It is well preserved and has a very beautiful door. Inside, among many interesting images, a stunning sculpted statue that represents Jesus on the Cross stands out.

1.2. Caldas de Monchique

It is one of the most beautiful places in the region, known for having the best water in the Algarve. It lies close to the town and it is said that the spa’s hot water has a temperature of around 31º Celsius and has therapeutic properties for rheumatic and respiratory diseases, being also used for relaxation. The healing properties of this miraculous water that has its source in the mountain were discovered long ago by the Romans.

It is not only the water that impels us to stay, however, the trails to explore near Caldas de Monchique also invite us to walk along them. For about 6 hours, you can do the whole 18 kilometers of these wonderful circuits, a unique way to gaze at the nature.

1.3. Parque da Mina

Close to Caldas de Monchique, you can also visit Parque da Mina, a little themed park that explains the functioning of an ancient iron ore mine and which offers entertainment. There is a little zoo here where children can feed the animals and, in its basement, you can learn to make licor de medronho (arbutus berry liquor).

1.4. Serra da Picota

Serra da Picota is the second highest point in the Algarve (at an altitude of 774 meters), being part of Serra de Monchique. Picota enjoys a prominent view of the mountains of Serra de Monchique, in the south of Portugal. From its peak you can see the region’s highest mountain, the neighboring Fóia, also stretching over the cliffs of the Algarve.

In the path’s start point you can admire the hot sources of Caldas. The vegetation also enchants us with its eucalyptuses and dense plantations of heather, strawberry and other aromatic herbs. Go up to the Picota panoramic point, it will be worth it!

1.5. Monte Fóia

At 902 meters of altitude, Monte Fóia is the highest peak in the Algarve. The mountain range is part of Monchique and there are several ways you can reach its peak, so you can choose whether to hike, ride a mountain bicycle or drive a jeep. 

This peak offers panoramic views as if you were on top of the world, but mind the weather forecast, since if you want to enjoy the view at its best, the day should be sunny and free from clouds, then you will be fascinated by the view.

When you decide to visit Fóia, do not forget to bring some warm clothes because it could be rather cold and windy due to the altitude. Along the road to Fóia you can find plenty of restaurants, therefore you do not need to worry with bringing any snacks with you.

2. Where should I sleep? Unforgettable refuges…

If, by this time, you’ve already packed your bags and asking where you should stay to enjoy the beauty of Monchique, then here goes a wholly different suggestion.

2.1. Vilafoia

Vilafoia is a lodge with just twelve rooms, which will allow you all the quietness you wish and desire. Located in Monchique and surrounded by a cork forest with a view to the sea, it is a place that will dazzle you, as the landscape is surely breath-taking.

Here hosts are divided into two groups. For the first, the lodge offers outside activities such as cycling, walking, trails, mountain hiking, among others. For the second type of hosts that look to connect with the nature, this wonderful refuge offers yoga, meditation, reiki, birdwatching, among other serene and relaxing activities, in a unique immersive experience that will leave you completely relaxed.

A highlight in the outside space is the enormous wooden deck with a view to the mountains of Monchique and to the sea, which is used for yoga, meditation as well as small events. On the other hand, the grass-covered terraces close to the breakfast room and the swimming pool also allow the practice of these activities there.

Breakfast is always included in the price and the jacuzzi, which is open all year round and has a magnificent view to the mountains. You can also enjoy the swing, a chill bed, and a spring water cascade. 

The place also organizes activities such as guided tours by the trails of Monchique, Happy Hour Yoga at the end of the day with ambient music, culminating in the jacuzzi, or you can still be invited to do mindfulness between the trees or relaxing with therapeutic massages.

For the more spiritual guests, this lodge also offers the called “forest bath”, a therapy that was born in Japan and which translates into a nature immersion that is said to provide for a reduction of the arterial tension and improve the blood flow, the best trees for this therapy being the eucalypt, pine tree and cork oaks. Michael Izaú, owner of Vilafoia, refers that guests call the lodge “a paradise in the mountain, given the combination of a unique and dazzling view of mountains and sea”.

2.2. Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro

An interesting curiosity about this convent is that it is located on private property, but the owner welcomes the guests without charging a cent.

The monument is located on the hills upwards from the town. It is the ruins of a Franciscan convent known as Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro. It is a monastery built in 1631 that was completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. From the top of the convent you can enjoy a superb view of Monchique and its surroundings. Be aware that if you want to walk from the convent to the town it will take you about 15 minutes.

2.3. Another option for your stay could be Hotel Termal de Monchique that offers thermal springs, indoor pool, sauna, as well as a souvenir shop and even wedding service, or, alternatively, Pure Monchique Hotel that offers moments of perfect tranquillity, with its amazing panoramic over the Natural Park of Serra de Monchique.

Luar da Fóia is a local restaurant on the slope of the hill which enjoys a magnificent view over the region. The food is cooked perfectly and the price is fair.

Charrete offers good service and good food, with quite generous portions. The black pig stands out in its menu and the variety of dishes on offer is big. Its location in the narrow streets of the town of Monchique also makes it a very typical option, accessible and pleasant.

A last suggestion would be Foz do Banho, that offers an excellent relation between quality and price. The meals are delicious, and the service is good. The spicy chicken is one of its specialties and it can be found near Caldas de Monchique and Monchique Resort & Spa Hotel.

It is told that 95% of the ocean is still not known, just like many of those treasures that sank in them. That is why you are invited to dive with us and discover the five most valuable treasures ever found on the ocean’s seabed.

1. Treasure of Caesarea: an inestimable jewel

Caesarea is part of Israel’s greatest gold treasure and its worth cannot even be quantified.

The life of Zvika Fayer changed forever when, in 2015, what was to be a mere diving trip ended up becoming an unprecedented event. Zvika was exploring the remaining of a shipwreck when he found something shining among the sand. He came closer and understood it was a gold coin, and then saw another, and another…

Zvika went back ashore and called the Israeli antiquity authorities and, in no time, about 2000 gold coins and several statues were found. It is believed that the ship was a roman cargo vessel that sank around 1600 years ago, a similar find having been discovered earlier that year.

In total, these two treasures are not only some of the most incredible finds of the roman treasure in Israel, but also the most inestimable underwater discovery of all times.

2. RMS Republic: 7 billion dollars

In 1909, as she collided with another ship, RMS Republic met her end. The ship carried 1500 wealthy passengers who were saved, but their valuable belongings did not have the same destiny.

In addition to the objects, it is believed that the ship also transported several million dollars in gold, destined for Russia, but this gold was never found.

In 1987, Martin Bayerle tried to salvage the lost gold but with no success. Specialists have recently estimated that only the coins are worth about 7 billion dollars, not including the objects left there by millionaire passengers which were never found.

3. Sinking of the Salcombe: 800 million dollars

Salcombe is a town where no one ever expected to come across such a find. In the early 1990s, a surprising find has put Salcombe on the map, when a 17th century ship was discovered in the seabed containing several piles of Moroccan gold.

This picturesque small town’s luck did not end here, however, as Salcombe seems to have unfathomable mysteries. In 2004, one more discovery took place. In this case, it was the rest of a boat dated to the Bronze Age. At the time, a change in the plaques under the sea has left a huge number of artifacts from the thirteenth century that were taken from a shipwreck. It is currently estimated that the treasure could be worth about 800 million dollars. Apart from these treasures, it is believed that there is more to be found in that spot.

4. Nuestra Señora de Atocha: 400 million dollars

In 1622, the ship was heading to its last anchoring stop in Havana when a hurricane caused it to sink off the coast of Florida.

The point is that Nuestra Señora de Atocha sank after its supplies embarked in Colombia and Panama, along with a very special cargo…
It had sailed to these countries for gold, precious stones, copper, silver, indigo and tobacco for King Philip IV, and for all this, the value inside the ship’s hold ascended to 400 million dollars, now lost somewhere in the ocean.

5. Titanic: 200 million dollars

And at last, the Titanic, the iconic and supposedly unsinkable ship which, in April 1912 and during its maiden voyage, sank in the sequence of a collision with an iceberg.

It was only found in 1985. It was thought that, due to its size, it would have gone down in one piece and that its content remained intact, but, in fact, Robert Ballard discovered that the Titanic had broken in two and sank that way.

There are, nevertheless, several objects in good condition that ended up being auctioned. The discovery was valued in 200 million dollars and there is still nowadays the possibility that more worthy objects are retrieved thanks to this wreckage.

There are two important Spanish cave complexes from the Palaeolithic period: the Caves of Altamira, in Cantabria, and the Caves of Tito Bustillo, in the Asturias. They are located in Cornija Cantábrica, the northern region of Spain.

This region is a document to the history of humanity due to its enormous number of well-preserved caverns and the diverse techniques of cave art from the Palaeolithic (30.000 to 10.000 years B.C.) in what was the first artistic representation of Homo Sapiens. We will also present some examples of other caverns in other regions of Spain.

1. Cueva de Altamira

Discovered in 1868 by a hunter, Santillana del Mar in Cantabria is the Sistine Chapel of the Palaeolithic. For conservation purposes, visiting is restricted, taking place only one day per week with five people selected among those who bought tickets to the Museum. The visit lasts only around 37 minutes and there is a whole protocol to follow from clothing to lighting. There is also Nova Cova, a tridimensional replica of the cavern and of its figures. It is well recreated, but it is obviously better to see the real one.

There are guided tours in Spanish or English, where it is explained how pre-historic artists used the rocks’ prominences such as lines, to create their drawings, thus giving them volume and realism. Since you’re there, you can also visit the Museum of Altamira, you can watch a film and see holograms of animals and people.

We’ll also recommend visiting the town known as “of Three Lies” in Santillana del Mar. The streets and shops have a medieval look and here you can visit the “Museum of Torture”. Beware though, visitors have reported uneasy feelings after discovering some of the cruel torture practices, some of which are unfortunately still in use nowadays.

2. Tito Bustillo, Cuevona de Ardines e Cuevona de Cueves

Caverna Tito Bustillo, situated in Ribadesella, in the Asturias, has been a World Heritage Site since July 2008. Its discovery in 1968 by a group of alpinists was accidental. They were hiking in an abyss known as Pozu’l Ramu in Ribadesella. One of the most complete deposits of Palaeolithic art, with painting and drawings of animals, lies here, along with the everyday tools of the pre-historic families that lived there.

With the entrance included in the ticket price, you can also visit Cuevona de Ardines, located next to Cueva Tito Bustillo. Cuevona has, as a main hall, a circular plant with a diameter of 80 metres and hight of 40 metres. On top, an enormous hole lets the sunlight come in. The visit lasts an average of 45 minutes and is limited to 20 visitors. To reach its entrance, you need to go up a stairway with about 300 steps and, on the inside, you will also face many staircases.

In the Cuevona, music concerts take place given its perfect natural acoustics. In addition to it, the guides will tell funny stories like when they had to remove the images and sounds of ancient animals from the tour of the cave, since many children that took part left scared and crying.

Five kilometres away from Ribadesella, you can also visit Cuevona de Cuevas. It is an impressive scenery because a road goes through this cavern, which is the single access by car to the village of Cuevas del Agua. Should you want it, you can do the 250 meters of the road on foot, but beware that, albeit being illuminated, it is still dangerous, just like any other road, so you should wear reflective clothing. When arriving, do the Ruta de los Molinos on foot as well, the landscape is magnificent and the region’s traditional windmills remain a very interesting attraction.

3. Gruta de las Maravillas

In Aracena, in the mountain ridge of the same name, and north of the region of Huelva, we find a system of caverns discovered by chance by a shepherd from the region in 1886. Gruta de las Maravillas was Spain’s first touristic cave, opened to the public since 1914. There, you can walk over 1200 meters of cave galleries divided in two levels. In the caves you will find several names such as Cristalería de Dios (God’s Glazier), Sala de los Garbanzos (Chickpeas’ Hall), Sala de los Mantones de Manila, Salon de los Desnudos (Naked Hall). Here, the subterranean lakes are wonderful!

4. Cueva del Tesoro

In Malaga, Rincón de la Victoria, just a few kilometres from the sea, you can visit Cueva del Tesoro (The Treasure Cave). This is one of the three marine caves that exist in the world and the only one in Europe (the other two are in Asia and America) and the only one that can be visited. The Treasure Cave is small but very beautiful, and when there aren’t that many people, the silence can be overwhelming.

Portugal has plentiful of these natural beauties, some can be visited in the company of specialists, others not, but they are undoubtedly extremely unique monuments. The largest caves in Portugal are those of Mira de Aire, composed by numerous individual caves, totalling 11km in galleries, which is truly impressive.

Most of these strange wonders are located in areas of the country where the dominant rocks are limestone (western region) or basalt (in the islands, resulting from volcanic eruptions). Let’s discover some of the most beautiful caves you can visit in Portugal.

1. Grutas de Mira de Aire

The mystical Mira de Aire Caves constitute the largest accessible cave system in the country and are just 15 kilometres away from Fátima, in a village with the same name as the caves, on the way to Porto de Mós, just as you enter Serra d’Aire.

Also known as Grutas dos Moinhos Velhos, or Old Mills’ Caves, they were discovered in 1947 and are, as for now, the largest known caverns in Portugal.

They are interconnected by numerous artificial tunnels which total a length of over 4 kilometres, of which only around 600 meters can be visited, which includes a 110-meter slope.

2. Algar do Carvão

It is located at Caldeira Guilherme Moniz, an ancient dormant volcano, and the only in the world that is open to visitors.

Here you will go 100 meters deep down and can watch stalactites that are unique in the world (for its characteristic silicates) and a subterranean lagoon of crystalline waters. Algar do Carvão is considered a Regional Natural Monument and it is situated in Porto Judeu, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores.

I was there and, believe me, entering a volcano and seeing its interior is an absolutely unique experience you cannot miss.

3. Grutas da Moeda

In the municipality of S. Mamede, Batalha, Leiria, this complex of limestone caves known as the Coin Caves was discovered in 1971 by two hunters, whose curiosity led them to explore the shaft cave in all of its extension, including the “hunter’s hall” filled with limestone formations.

For two months, the two men excavated narrow passages right next to the first cave, progressively revealing magnificent galleries that can be visited nowadays.

4. Grutas de Alvados

Found in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho [Estremadura Limestone Massif], these caves are composed by multiple interconnected halls full of stalactites and stalagmites, with names such as Lago da Ponte [Bridge Lagoon], Sala das Estátuas [Hall of the Statues], Planeta Maravilhoso [Wonderful Planet] and Sala dos Ciprestes [Cypress Hall].

It is said that the caves are over 180 million years, with its formation dated to the Jurassic middle ages, a time when dinosaurs roamed in the region. They were discovered in 1964 by a group of workers from the limestone quarry of Serra dos Candeeiros.

They are very close to the Grutas de Santo António and you can reach both of them from Estrada das Grutas in Cabeço do Bobo, Alvados.

5. Gruta da Nascente do Almonda

Almonda is impressive for its multiple underground streams that give origin to the river of the same name. It is an authentic sanctuary of speleology, representing the widest karst network known in Portugal. This cave, with over 10 kilometres, is an authentic national treasure.

6. Gruta do Escoural

In the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, parish of Santiago do Escoural, this cave is a fundamental point of the archeologic complex of Escoural, being the only cave with pre-historic rock paintings and engravings dated from the Superior Paleolithic.

There you can find numerous halls and galleries once used by populations over 50 thousand years ago. Temporary hunting shelter for hunters-gatherers, its first occupation dates to the Middle Paleolithic. In the Superior Paleolithic (35 to 8 thousand years b.C.), the area was used as a sanctuary, as we can see nowadays from decorative motifs of the pre-historic art.

7. Grutas de São Vicente

Formed 890 thousand years ago from a volcanic eruption that occurred in Paul da Serra and which flowed to the ocean, these caves are situated in the parish and municipality of S. Vicente, in Madeira.

A series of lava tunnels can be seen inside. Discovered for the first time in 1885 by the locals, they opened to the public on 1^st October 1996, being some of the first caves where visitors were allowed.

Make sure to visit them if you can, you will not regret it.

8. Grutas de Lapas

In the village of Lapas, very close to Torres Novas, we can find labyrinthic formations, constituted by galleries of hard access in some areas, though there are wide corridors in other parts.

First used as residences, it later served as a wine cellar, storage and even as pens for livestock of the village’s inhabitants. Since 1943, it is considered as a Property of Public Interest for there is a lot of curiosity in the study of this local.

Parque Mayer, in Lisbon, is one of the places that holds sporadically free cinema sessions and in open air, having already screened movies like Variações, Back to the Future, Yesterday or Midway, among others.

2. Casa Comum, Universidade do Porto

From Tuesday to Saturday, Porto’s Casa Comum is flooded with poetry, chattery, music and magic, and cinema nights are not forgotten, giving privilege to documentaries such has Proibidos, a documentary that was premiered at this venue.

The evenings at Pátio do Museu have returned in this month of July to the patio of the Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto with over two hundred open air events open to the general public.

Last July one more “Despertar” [Awakening] was presented in the company of TUP, a space for freedom to raise awareness about issues lost in the somnambulism of the past two years.

“Despertar” is the title of the cycle that TUP will present at the Soirées of Pátio do Museu.

Resulting from an initiative of Casa Comum da Universidade do Porto and MHNC-UP, “Noites no Pátio do Museu” had its first edition in 2020 at the peak of the covid-19 pandemic and was repeated in 2021, proving that “Culture is good to your health!”

Noites no Pátio do Museu 2022 always start at 9:30 pm. Entrance is free and is past by Jardim da Cordoaria, although limited to the venue’s capacity.

3. Parque da Devesa, Vila Nova de Famalicão

Cinema Paraíso, located in Parque da Devesa, Famalicão, is one more cultural proposal to enjoy good moments outdoors.

Sessions usually take place in July and pay tribute to prised films such as 1917, honoured with three golden statuettes in the categories of Best Photography, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects at the 2020 Oscars.

Entrance is free and normally takes place on Wednesdays at around 10:00 pm.

Last July, saw the start of Famalicão ZEN, which aims at promoting alternative and complementary therapies, healthy eating habits and natural products.

Coimbra is now promoting the initiative “Cinema Fora de Portas” which lasts until September and graces numerous squares of this splendid city.

The outdoor cinema evenings have periodically returned to Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, which last year made a strong bet on comedy films and some classics like “The Birds”, “Gilda” and “My Darling Clementine”.

Jardim do Centro de Arte e Cultura, in Évora, has been transformed into an open air cinema hall to welcome Cinema Paradiso, with its cultural programming promoted by Fundação Eugénio Almeida.

1. Lisbon

The most revered and visited Portuguese city in cinema is Lisbon, for it would be impossible to only pick one film that is connected to this marvelous city.

“The Russia House”, starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer, is one of the films that were shot in the capital. It tells the history of a British publisher, Barley Blair, who is handed the notes of a famous soviet scientist with important military secrets. The British Secret Services tracks Blair in Lisbon and interrogates him about the manuscript, but he does not know the document. The material is intercepted by the spy services and Blair is sent out to Russia to discover the truth.

The second film that is pointed out here is based on the work of writer John Le Carré, it’s called “Night Train to Lisbon” and it is one of the films that has best represented the city in the last few years. It is a movie from 2013, starring Beatriz Batarda, Jeremy Irons and Christopher Lee, where the diversity of landscapes very well depicts the vast range of fantastic sceneries that Lisbon presents us. In this film you can see Bairro da Bica, the 25 de Abril Bridge in a kind of secondary role and even a cemetery, that of Alto de São João, in a tale in which the streets work as a labyrinthic scenario for a passionate and obsessive search.

“Os Amantes do Tejo”, in its original title, translated as “The Lovers of Lisbon”, is another unavoidable film that was filmed in Lisbon, a love letter to this city in the 50s. This French film incorporates some elements of the Lusitanian culture where iconic Amália Rodrigues makes herself noted. The fado singer is a piece of Lisbon’s cultural identity, even including a song of hers in the soundtrack that tells the history of a French taxi driver in Lisbon.

The protagonist Pierre Roubier carries the marks of his wife’s infidelity with him as he eventually ends up meeting a woman that faces issues with police. This work was censored by the famed Portuguese “lápis azul” [blue pencil, symbol of censorship of the Portuguese dictatorship], resulting in the omission of over 15% of the film’s total length.

2. Cascais

James Bond’s 1969 film “007 – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” includes several scenes filmed in Cascais. At the time, in Costa do Sol, European royalty, and cinema’s most known secret agent, found Hotel Palácio, a historic hotel in Estoril that served as a meeting point for spies during the Second World War. The film starts off with James Bond combating a villain in the wild waters of Guincho and, in other scenes, he visits Lisbon, Setúbal and Zambujal, but it is the spirit of Linha de Cascais that most suits the profile of 007.

3. Sintra

“The Ninth Gate” is a Roman Polanski film in which Johnny Depp portrays the main character. Part of the action takes place in Sintra and only a few other places could be so well suited to tell a story so full of mysticism. The plot takes us on a journey of centenary books, esoteric tales and scary figures, seeming custom-built for the legends of the town and the mountain ridge of Sintra. In the film, we can see Praça da República from where we take a motorbike ride through Pena to the Chalet Biester. The main character elects the iconic Hotel Central to stay overnight.

This supernatural thriller, rewarded at the European Film Awards in the category of “World Cinema”, is based on the romance “The Club Dumas” by Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Depp plays Dean Corso, an ancient book collector who searches for a rare literary work. While looking for “The Nine Doors of the Kingdom of Shadows”, Corso will take on a dangerous path leading to satanic themes, always showcasing the Sintra scenery.

4. Vila Nova de Milfontes

This is the production that brought the most high-relevance stars to Portugal. Jeremy Irons performs alongside Winona Ryder and Meryl Streep in the 1993 film “The House of the Spirits”. The adaptation of Isabel Allende’s classic is set in Chile, therefore avoiding any incorporation of Portuguese culture.

However, the stairway of the Assembleia da República [Parliament] or the Paços do Concelho [City Hall] are easy to identify during the moment in which the revolution takes place. For this film, the set of a villa was built on Monte das Três Marias in Vila Nova de Milfontes, from which only the staircase has survived. Beside the amazing landscapes of Vila Nova de Milfontes and Cabo Espichel, the movie was also filmed in Denmark.

5. Tomar

A project that took years to be executed and during the production phase of which, problems after problems arose. “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” by Terry Gilliam, has become a nearly cursed project. The co-production between Spain, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Portugal, came to a stalemate when the relationship between Gilliam, Leopardo Filmes and its producer Paulo Branco deteriorated. A giant legal battle has developed, centered in the fight for the legal rights of the film, which was concluded with the co-producer Ukbar Films, by Pandora Cunha Telles.

The long-play, partially filmed in Portugal, that premiered at Cannes in May 2018, saw itself “cursed” while being shot in Portugal, due to a fire that broke out during the recording causing damage to the Convento de Cristo [Convent of Christ] in Tomar, a building that has the seal of UNESCO’s World Heritage.
