Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is a particular sight for nature lovers and adventurers alike. The world’s largest salt flat, located in the Daniel Campos Province near the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 3,656 metres, spans over 10,582 square kilometres. 

The region is unique due to its size, its particular climate, and an 8-metre thick salt layer, resulting in a particular fauna and flora. While the site is popular year-round, the wet season – which lasts from December of April and transforms the entire flat in a mirror-like scenery – is a particularly good time to visit the Salar de Uyuni. 

The accommodation offer near the salt flat is already unconventional, as most of the hotels are made of salt due to the lack of more traditional building materials. Yet as of July 2027, another unique form of accommodation is set to start welcoming Salar dee Uyuni tourists: Samkani Camp.

The new glamping experience is a project from A&K Sanctuary, the company behind a collection of luxury lodges, camps, and riverboats. It will feature six Airstream campers in total: five suites and one dining venue. The well-known campers’ exterior is reminiscent of the salt flat’s mirror-like look during the wet season, while the interiors are architect-designed and feature blue Bolivian marble, wood, and stainless steel accents.

“Wildly remote and otherworldly, Bolivia’s Uyuni salt flats encompass thousands of square kilometers of silence. Evolving throughout the year from a sea of salt hexagons to a magnificent mirror that reflects the clearest skies — a galaxy for stargazing. Samkani, which means ‘the one who dreams’ in Bolivia’s indigenous Altiplano Aymara-language, will specifically cater to those who wish to discover the region in an undisturbed way, while offering all the comforts of a more traditional hotel room. 

Aside from the suites and restaurants, the boutique glamping experience will also offer more than 30 experiences. Guests will by accompanied by a private guide and driver, who will share their knowledge of the unique salt plane, allowing visitors to connect with the local landscape and culture.

At the moment of writing, bookings aren’t open just yet. Samkani Camp will be available for booking as an A&K Tailormade journey or as part of small group journeys. Those who wish to be informed of the opening as soon as possible can register on A&K’s website.

The suite is designed to make getting ready for a concert part of the trip. It has a dressing area, illuminated mirrors, artwork inspired by Dion’s shows and a wall of microphones where guests can sing. Metallic finishes and lighting add to the backstage feel. Fans can spend time preparing for their night out together, then return to a room that carries on the concert atmosphere. Marriott says the suite can be booked for stays between 12 September 2026 and 31 May 2027. The room may therefore appeal to visitors travelling for later Paris dates as well as those attending this autumn’s shows.

Visitors can also take part in “The Paris Playlist” without staying at the hotel. Its activities include a space where music is paired with fragrances, a creative workshop and places to take photographs. Paris Select Book reports that the two-hour experience costs €49 with a hot drink or fruit juice, or €59 with a glass of champagne. The programme gives local fans and visitors another way to take part without paying for the themed suite. Marriott describes its related “Le Goûter” experience as a mix of French food, creative activities and interactive photographs. Places are limited and available on selected dates, so visitors need to register in advance and check what is offered on their chosen day.

The hotel’s “Paris Encore: A Fan Singalong” takes the programme into the streets. This two-hour guided walk links places associated with a visit to Paris through stories about Dion and opportunities for fans to sing together. According to Paris Select Book, the route starts at the hotel and passes the Arc de Triomphe, the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. It also includes a champagne stop at the Paris Marriott Champs Elysees Hotel. The walk is free to book for Marriott Bonvoy members, and joining the hotel group’s loyalty programme is free. Marriott says places are limited, advance registration is required and concert tickets are not included.

Dion’s 16 Paris concert dates prompted a rise in searches and bookings after they were announced in March. At the time, apartment hotel brand Adagio reported a 400% increase in bookings, while Booking.com recorded a 49% rise in searches for Paris. Those figures describe interest reported after the announcement; they do not show how much visitors will eventually spend. Estimates of the tour’s wider economic effect also vary considerably. They help explain why hotels are creating experiences for concert visitors, but remain forecasts rather than confirmed tourism revenue.

Trips built around live music are sometimes called “gig trips”. For some fans, the concert is the reason to travel, while the hotel, meals and time spent exploring the city become part of the occasion. Le Méridien’s suite, hotel activities and guided walk are all designed for different parts of that visit. Marriott Bonvoy is also offering members access to concert packages through its Moments programme, where they can use loyalty points for selected experiences. The hotel’s activities run on selected dates this autumn, while the suite’s published stay dates extend into 2027. Fans interested in either should check availability and what is included before booking, particularly if they still need a concert ticket.

Although the Michelin Guide is most well-known for its stars, a distinction reserved for the best restaurants in the world, the organisation introduced a similar mark of quality for hotels in 2024. The so-called Michelin Keys are awarded following the level of experience a hotel might offer. One Michelin Key indicates a ‘very special stay’, two an ‘exceptional stay’, and three an ‘extraordinary stay’.

Initially, the selection of hotels spread across 15 destinations in North America, Europe, and Asia but it has grown a lot over the past two years and Michelin Keys can now be found in 79 destinations.

As far as the 2026 selection is concerned, the Michelin Guide added 194 Michelin Key distinctions and promotions within Europe. The continent’s total number of Michelin Keys has thus reached 1,338 hotels.

There was significant growth in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom, and Italy and France remain the most-awarded countries with 224 and 220 Keys respectively. Meanwhile, Liechtenstein and Slovakia were able to take home their first Michelin Keys.

Europe saw eight new Three-Key properties being added inn 2026. Seven of those were promoted, while one was a newcomer within the selection. That honour goes to Venice’s Airelles Palladio, the first Airelles property outside France and a new arrival overlooking the Giudecca Canal which also took home the Michelin Guide Opening of the Year Award.

“This capacity for innovation is expressed both in must-visit destinations and in emerging tourist markets. Studio Marincola Architects have completely revamped the building, designing it to give the UNESCO-listed Dolomites centre stage. They have used Dolomia stone and fir wood, and large windows that turn the mountain landscape into living wallpaper inside the hotel itself.

Each room and suite has a private balcony from which guests can admire the stupendous views: snow-covered mountains in winter and pink and orange hues at sunset in summer.

International travellers can reach Cortina from Venice Marco Polo and Treviso Canova airports, both of which are around a two-hour drive away.

The town has long been a favourite among skiers and mountaineers. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956, and returned to the international spotlight earlier this year as one of the host destinations of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games.

The property offers a variety of room and suite categories, including family suites, a Wellness Suite with a terrace view and a Jacuzzi Suite with a balcony view.

Topping the hotel is the 140 sqm Enrosadira Penthouse, which has three bedrooms, a 50 sqm terrace, a sauna, a Turkish bath, living and dining areas, and a fully equipped kitchen. Guests have the option of hiring a private chef.

Zuma, the contemporary Japanese restaurant that originated in London, will reopen at the hotel for its second winter season. It will serve aperitifs and dinner, and there will be live music and DJ sets at the bar late into the night.

Planning a Walt Disney World holiday can involve much more than choosing a hotel room. Visitors may also need to consider the distance from the theme parks, available transport, restaurants, swimming pools and facilities for children. Disney’s research found that some guests visited and revisited the website between 20 and 30 times before completing a booking. The company says the redesigned experience should reduce those repeated searches and help travellers make decisions with greater confidence.

One of the main additions will be a guided search tool that allows travellers to describe their plans in ordinary language. Guests could enter information about their group, budget, interests and reason for visiting instead of selecting options from several separate menus. Disney gave the example of two adults attending the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival who want easy access to the park. The system could recommend a nearby resort and explain why its location and transport connections match their plans.

The recommendations can also take a guest’s favourite Disney characters and preferred facilities into account. A family organising a seventh birthday for a child who likes The Lion King, for example, could be directed towards Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. The property has family suites based on the film, while Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge could be suggested because of its savannah area. Search results will contain a summary of each property and an explanation of why it may suit the information provided.

Travellers with flexible dates will be able to search for accommodation by season or individual month. A new calendar is designed to display hotel availability and room prices across different dates. According to Disney, the results will include the best available offers and rates that apply to the selected stay. This could make it easier to identify a less expensive travel period without repeatedly changing dates and carrying out new searches.

However, price will be only one part of the comparison. A new map will show where each resort is situated in relation to Walt Disney World’s theme parks. Comparison pages will set out differences in dining, transport, facilities and other services, while resort pages will contain additional photographs and videos. This information could help travellers decide whether a cheaper hotel remains good value once journey times and their daily plans are considered.

A new transport section will explain how visitors can travel from each resort to the parks and approximately how long the journey should take. Guests will also be able to ask follow-up questions based on the accommodation they are considering. A question about walking from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort to EPCOT would not receive only a response saying that the journey is not possible on foot. The tool would instead present the available transport alternatives and place the answer within the context of the guest’s plans.

Disney says the answers generated by the system will use information from official Walt Disney World resources. Restricting the source material may reduce the risk of receiving unrelated information from elsewhere online, but it cannot guarantee that every answer will always be complete or current. The limited beta test will therefore allow Disney to collect feedback and examine how the tools perform in real booking situations. The company has not yet announced when the updated experience will become available to all visitors.

Using the guided search and its AI functions will remain optional. Travellers who do not want personalised automated recommendations will still be able to use the existing search and booking tools on DisneyWorld.com. Independent travel agents and employees at Disney’s call centre will also continue helping guests organise their visits. The new system will therefore provide an additional planning method rather than replacing the human and conventional booking options already available.

Although for some people, it may be hard to imagine there ever was a world without Pokémon, the popular franchise just turned 30. Ever since its launch, the Japanese company has been expanding in order to attract new fans – including Pokémon Go in 2016 and Pokémon Sleep in 2023.

In a new move to keep on reinventing itself and to keep fans dreaming – literally – while celebrating two anniversaries, the franchise recently joined forces with hotelier Not A Hotel to design a human-sized, Poké Ball-shaped hotel. 

“As society becomes increasingly convenient and efficient, Not A Hotel aims to bring more joy to individuals’ lives. For years, Pokémon fans have dreamed of stepping inside a Poké Ball. Not A Hotel, leveraging its architectural and technological expertise, has turned that dream into a reality. This structure transcends the boundaries of architecture and product design, fusing the world of Pokémon with the architectural quality that defines Not A Hotel,” said Not A Hotel in an interview with architecture magazine Dezeen.

Not A Hotel, a Japanese hospitality firm launched in 2020, creates one-of-a-kind vacation homes around the globe. Unique design and unique locations come together through their in-house team of Not A Hotel Architects and collaborations with designers such as NIGO and Snøhetta.

The remarkable Poké Ball structure fits perfectly within that philosophy. It is set on a lakeshore in Tomakomai City, located on the northernmost of Japan’s main islands, Hokkaido. The sphere measures just 3 metres in diameter and is made of moulded acrylic hemispheres, with a sliding door offering some privacy from the outdoor world.

Inside, the circular theme continues. A round mattress sits in the middle of the Poké Ball while a curved acrylic window boosts lake views, while creating the illusion of a partly-opened ball. The tiny building also offers a washroom, which us decorated using tiles the colour of the very sleepy Pokémon character Snorlax.

Guests will also have the possibility to customise their stay and particularly the lighting by choosing their favourite Pokémon character on an iPad. However, in order to tie in with the sleep game app Pokémon Go, the experience also focuses on turning the room into a calming sleeping environment.

Although many Pokémon fans will undoubtedly be disappointed, the Poké Ball hotel will not open to the general public and can’t be visited. However, until 30 September 2026, Pokémon Sleep is running a social media competition on X which allows Japanese residents who have downloaded the Pokémon Sleep app to participate. Afterwards, ten couples will be selected and win a one-night stay in the Pokémon Ball room between 8 and 18 October, including meals. Transportation to and from the nearby New Chitose Airport as well as other personal costs are, however, not covered by the franchise.

For the 2026 European Hotel Distribution Study, Professor Roland Schegg of HES-SO Valais-Wallis and HOTREC surveyed 2,713 hotels throughout Europe. 1,882 of those concerned individual hotels from 28 countries, while 831 were hotel-chain properties.

The results are remarkable. On the one hand, direct bookings prove to remain resilient. Approximately half of hotel bookings (51.3%) are made directly with the hotel. This includes bookings through websites, email, telephone, and walk-ins.

On the other hand, Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) seem to be deeply embedded in hotel distribution. I 2026, they accounted for 29.9% of hotel room bookings, up grom 19.7% in 2013. An increase of more than 10 percentage points over 12 years, while the share of direct bookings declined by 6 percentage points.

The OTA market is also increasingly dominated by a small number of stakeholders. Booking Holdings accounted for 60% of European OTA bookings in 2013, while it stands at almost 70% in 2026. Together with Expedia Group, the two largest global groups now account for more than 85% of all OTA bookings in Europe. For Europe’s independent hotels and SMEs, this means an increased dependency and a risk to innovation in the sector.

“Hotels need digital platforms, but they also need genuine choice. Growing concentration must not translate into growing dependency. Europe’s hotels, most of them SMEs, need a competitive and transparent marketplace where they can choose how to reach their guests and remain in control of their own business,” stated Alexandros Vassilikos, President of HOTREC.

Moreover, bookings through OTAs do are not only a concern when it comes to market share and commission costs. According to the European Hotel Distribution Study, 51% of hotels report that OTAs undercut their prices frequently or occasionally, while 80% of those did not agreed to the lower price being offered. Meanwhile, more than 44% of hotels report OTA multi-sourcing, meaning rates or availability can be redistributed through other platforms or intermediaries, leading to price inconsistencies, guest confusion, billing difficulties, incorrect information, and reduced control over inventory.

“Europe’s digital rules are not only about search engines, social media or app stores. For thousands of hotels, a gatekeeper platform stands directly between the business and its guest. With 85% of OTA bookings going through just two global groups, robust enforcement of the Digital Markets Act is essential to protect competition, expand consumer choice, support innovation and safeguard Europe’s SMEs,” commented Marie Audren, Director General of HOTREC.

HOTREC finds the survey underlines the importance of Europe’s digital rules for the hospitality sector. The association sees Booking Holdings as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), while the Platform-to-Business Regulation (P2B) is at risk under the proposed Digital Omnibus. The DMA thus needs to be effectively implemented and enforced, and the P2B Regulation’s essential transparency and fairness safeguards need to be preserved.

In the study, HOTREC underlines that such protections are vital to ensure that hospitality SMEs retain meaningful control over pricing, payments, distribution, data, and guest relationships, while giving the next generation of hospitality entrepreneurs room to grow.

The Commission’s aim is to make the rules for short-term rentals more consistent across the bloc and reduce legal uncertainty. Cities including Barcelona, Paris and Venice have already taken their own steps to limit the effects of platforms such as Airbnb on local housing markets. Those measures range from tighter quality standards and pauses on new licences to outright bans, leaving a patchwork of rules that has prompted legal challenges.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the proposal as part of the EU’s wider effort to address the cost of living. In a statement, she said it would help to “tackle Europe’s housing affordability” by giving local authorities and communities clearer guidance that remains “anchored in local realities.”

Under the proposed approach, however, local authorities could not restrict short-term rentals without evidence of a housing problem. Relevant indicators might include a high ratio of property prices to local incomes or a sustained rise in housing costs over at least a decade.

These criteria are intended to show that any restrictions are necessary and proportionate. That could make them easier to defend against claims that they breach EU law, including the rules governing services. Rental providers have already brought such challenges in cities including Barcelona, where authorities are attempting to scrap 10,000 short-term rental permits. Barcelona would be likely to meet the proposed conditions: over the past decade, rents have risen by nearly 70%, while home purchase prices have increased by 38%.

The proposal builds on earlier EU action. In 2024, the European Parliament adopted measures designed to improve transparency in the short-term rental sector. However, those rules operated on an “opt-in/opt-out” basis, so Member States were not required to take part. The new draft would still need approval from the relevant EU governments and the European Parliament before it could take effect, a process likely to take months. If adopted, it would be the EU’s first framework for aligning housing measures across the bloc and would form part of broader efforts to rethink how European tourism is managed.

Critics argue that the framework may still rely too heavily on self-regulation and therefore fail to prevent disproportionate local rules. Alexandre Roure, Head of Policy at the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA Europe), said: “Without independent scrutiny or effective redress, this proposal will remain a paper tiger, leaving disproportionate restrictions in place and undermining the legal certainty the Affordable Housing Act is meant to provide.”

Some apartments in the host neighbourhood of Valdebebas have seen rental prices increase by as much as 1,000% for the race period, from 11 to 13 September 2026, according to real estate agents in the Spanish capital and local media reports. Euronews found one flat in the district listed on Airbnb at €11,400 for four days, described as “a house designed for VIP groups”.

Other luxury properties, including those in the city’s historic heart and areas such as Salamanca, Chamberí, Chamartín and Los Jerónimos, are being listed at up to 10 times their usual rates, according to local media reports.

Hotel room rates have also gone through the roof, reaching an average of €1,071 per night for the race weekend, an increase of 147% compared with the previous week, according to consultancy Simon-Kucher.

It’s a phenomenon that goes beyond accommodation. Unsurprisingly, with tens of thousands of motorsport fans expected to descend on the city, parking spaces in local garages are going for as much as €500 over the race weekend.

The demand is being driven by the sheer number of motorsport fans who want to see the race. Around 120,000 tickets have been sold, while 345,000 people are expected to participate in Grand Prix-related activities across the city. More than 80,000 visitors are expected to travel to Madrid for the event, including around 45,000 international spectators. The influx is anticipated to generate €467 million and nearly 9,000 jobs, according to analysis from PwC.

The Grand Prix joins Shakira’s Madrid residency and Celine Dion’s return to live performance in Paris among the major events on Europe’s autumn calendar that are pushing tourism demand and receipts to new levels.

Despite those economic positives, some Madrileños may be glad to see the back of the F1 race, although it is set to return annually for the next decade under the current contract. Residents have formed protest groups such as “Stop Formula 1 Madrid” to oppose a project they say “will only create noise and mobility problems for thousands of households and workers”. They also cite studies suggesting the event will “be a significant source of air pollution”.

For now, residents will have to see how the inaugural race affects their neighbourhoods, with many reportedly fitting properties with noise meters to monitor the disturbance. As the general director of a local golf course affected by a partial closure for the weekend put it: “Let’s see how it goes this year. It’s the first time, so we don’t really know how it’s going to go. So we will wait, and then we can have discussions with organisers again.”

Initial façade works began this summer, while the main structural programme is expected to start in mid-2027 and be completed by the end of 2028.

The investment comes after a turbulent period for the airport hotel. In August 2025, the local mayor ordered the Sheraton to close temporarily after advice from the Flemish Brabant West fire brigade, following tests that found fire-safety systems no longer met applicable standards. Guests were required to leave the hotel by midnight, although Brussels Airport said at the time that the measure was precautionary and that no incident had endangered guests or staff.

The hotel later reopened after corrective steps and inspection clearance, but fire safety returned to the spotlight on Christmas Eve 2025, when 175 guests were temporarily evacuated to the airport departure hall after a blaze broke out in a technical room in the underground car park. Firefighters brought the flames under control; no injuries were reported, and guests returned after the building was ventilated and carbon monoxide checks were completed.

Although the latest airport announcement on the hotel focuses on guest experience, capacity, and sustainability, the planned upgrades to electrical and ventilation systems, as well as the roof and broader technical infrastructure, will be watched closely in light of those incidents. The project also includes a new glass gallery in the reception and restaurant area, designed to bring in more natural light and expand the lobby into multiple hospitality zones.

Guest rooms are due to be fully refurbished, the restaurant will undergo a complete renovation, and the current meeting-room space on the top floor will be converted into additional executive rooms. Brussels Airport said the added rooms are intended to help address high occupancy levels and prepare for future demand for accommodation at the airport.

Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport, said the hotel has been part of the airport since its launch three and a half decades ago, and remains an important first or last stop for travellers, business guests, and visitors. The renovation, he said, is intended to deliver “fully refurbished, comfortable and modern rooms” and an enhanced dining and meeting environment.

Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel opened in 1989 under Starwood Hotels & Resorts, with Marriott International taking over in 2017. Brussels Airport Company has, however, owned the building since 2019 and continues to pursue a diversification strategy through operationally relevant real estate investments. That includes the acquisition of neighbouring Novotel buildings and land, as the hub enjoys ongoing growth in passenger numbers.
