This sprawling hotel and wellness centre stands on what was once a popular zoo. It is entirely possible that where guests now lay their heads at night or relax in the whirlpool during the day was once the very place where elephants were exercised or lions trained.

That all came to an end in 1989 when Thermae 2000 first opened. The zoo animals went their separate ways, and, instead, thermal spas, restaurants, wellness facilities, and, a few years later, hotel rooms took their place.

What did remain, and had to remain as it is protected by law, is a very large and impressive mammoth tree, one of the world’s largest, heaviest and oldest tree species. The new centre had to be built around the tree and, today, it still stands proudly among the state-of-the-art facilities.

A striking location above Valkenburg

The centre is located in the southern part of the country, just a 90-minute drive from Brussels, making it an easy escape for those seeking a restorative short break.

It is not only the oldest and biggest of its kind in the Netherlands but surely also one of the most distinctive in design.

Thermae 2000 resembles the eye-catching shape of a pyramid, which is fitting as it is perched on the Cauberg, probably the most famous “mountain” in the country, just outside the pretty and popular town of Valkenburg.

It was founded by two Dutch physiotherapists, Marcel Jaspars and Mijndert Verschuur, which seems appropriate because this is exactly the kind of place to head when body and mind are in need of some recharge and TLC.

When it came to naming the centre, the two men came up with a novel idea. They chose the first letter from their Christian names, M, and put them together to create MM, which, as every Latin scholar will know, means 2000 in Roman numerals, hence Thermae 2000.

The pair later went their separate ways but reunited a few years ago for a major staff reunion celebrating the centre’s 30^th anniversary.

Wellness on a grand scale

Today, the resort comprises just about everything needed for a relaxing getaway: a wellness centre, spa treatments, a four-star hotel and restaurants where guests do not even need to change for dinner, as dining in a bathrobe is perfectly acceptable.

The wellness facilities are second to none and include what must be the largest number of saunas on one site in the country. In fact, you could stay for a week, trying a different one each day, and still have several left to experience.

The largest and most popular is Infinitum, which comes with huge windows and splendid panoramic views over the unspoilt surrounding countryside.

But there is far more here than saunas, both indoor and outdoor. Guests can also indulge in a wide range of spa treatments, and whichever one is chosen, aching bones and tired muscles are likely to feel far less tense afterwards.

There is even a relaxation cinema where, for a relatively small extra charge, visitors can watch a nature-themed film while reclining in a massage chair.

Signature treatments and loyal staff

As with much else about this lovely place, it is probably the friendly Dutch staff who truly make it what it is.

One good example is Patricia, one of the longest-serving members of the team, who has worked as a masseuse here for more than 30 years.

One of her specialities is the Lomi Lomi massage, likened to the therapeutic effect of waves rolling onto a Hawaiian beach. Guests are covered from head to toe in fragrant oil before being gently massaged for 50 minutes.

Another option is the Lotus massage, also lasting 50 minutes, covering the front and back of the body as well as the face.

The newest treatment is the Japanese head spa, focusing on cleansing, soothing and revitalising the scalp. It uses specially developed products and a nourishing mask carefully massaged in before finishing with conditioner that leaves hair feeling supple and healthy.

Guests can choose a 45-minute treatment (€89.95), focusing on deep cleansing, steam therapy and a refreshing scalp massage, or a 75-minute treatment (€114.95) for a more extensive experience with extra attention to the back, neck, face and scalp.

For Patricia, working here is also a family affair, as her husband does the same work at the centre.

Stay the night in comfort

While many visitors come only for the day, the experience may tempt them to stay longer.

Thermae 2000 has 74 rooms in total, including 14 wellness suites.

Some of the newest suites opened last year in what used to be office space. Those offices were relocated to make way for impressive guest rooms featuring their own infrared sauna, modern comforts and cracking views of the countryside and recently renovated gardens.

All rooms are connected to the wellness centre, allowing guests to meander around in a bathrobe all day. The spa does, however, have designated swimwear and nude days, so it is best to check in advance.

Another long-serving member of staff, Patty, who works in the wellness area, explains how the centre first came about and reveals a curious link with the past.

Patty, who joined five years after it opened in 1989, recalls that her uncle both worked as a lion tamer and actually lived at the zoo that once occupied the site.

Food, drink and Dutch hospitality

If the friendliness of staff like Patty leaves guests with a feel-good glow, so too will the food.

There are several places to eat, including Bread & Bites, which overlooks the pool and wellness area. Tasty dishes currently include butter chicken curry, crispy skin salmon fillet, pork tenderloin skewer, burgers and local specialities such as Flammkuchen with goat’s cheese.

It is an ideal lunch stop between treatments and activities.

Close by is another eatery, slightly more sophisticated, called The Lounge Bar, which appears to be the evening choice for many guests.

Current offerings include veal fillet, aubergine-filled ravioli and zander fillet. There is also an excellent selection of beers and wines, and, considering the quality, prices are very reasonable.

For a quick bite or drink, there is even an on-site food truck.

Again, the welcoming staff make the visit even more memorable and are a credit to the owners. Near-perfect English is spoken throughout, and all information is also available in English, which may be useful for visitors from the UK looking for a short Benelux escape.

More than just a spa break

Not everyone immediately thinks of the Netherlands for a holiday, while this modest country does not claim to rival the South of France or Tuscany, this resort undoubtedly has something unique to offer.

One particularly distinctive feature is the source of the many gallons of water needed each year to supply the pools. This is pumped from its own 381 metre deep thermal spring in the Cauberg, dating back thousands of years.

Yet the owners do not rest on their laurels. While this former zoo has been a roaring success over the past 37 years, it continues to evolve.

The garden was redesigned last year, last June, the resort unveiled a fully renovated lobby along with 12 new luxury hotel suites, each with a balcony.

Time permitting, visitors should also explore nearby Valkenburg, where parking is free for the first hour and where they can currently enjoy Everyday People, local street art featuring life-size concrete sculptures of real people, running until 8 June. There are also caves and castle ruins nearby, making for an excellent day out.

So, if you are looking for a short break this spring or summer and do not wish to venture too far from Belgium, Thermae 2000 deserves serious consideration.

It is unlikely to disappoint, not least because of the warmth of the welcome, with guests even offered a glass of bubbles on arrival.

Scarborough became well-known over 800 years ago thanks to Scarborough Fair, a six-week summer trading festival that drew merchants to the town from all over Europe. Farrer’s discovery launched the transformation of the town into a popular health resort, which boasted bathing machines as early as 1735. Today, it still generates £580 million a year (over €665 million), contributing 14.5% to North Yorkshire’s visitor economy.

This long history of welcoming visitors is set to be commemorated and shared with local communities and guests across 2026. Hailing the town as “one of Britain’s most cherished seaside resorts over the past four centuries,” Simon Myers, North Yorkshire councillor and executive member for arts and culture, said: “There is a varied programme of events that is being planned which will mark this significant milestone in Scarborough’s history.”

And in November, an illuminated art installation will arrive at Peasholm Park. A future-focused lantern parade is also on the cards.

Architecture of calm: Nordic Classicism meets Art Deco

Architecturally, Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall represents Nordic Classicism enriched with Art Deco influences. Designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio and built by contractor Jalo N. Syvähuoko, the building stands apart from Vähäkallio’s more commercial and industrial works through its refined interiors and technically ambitious structure. Constructed within a dense city-centre block on a compact site, the swimming hall was an especially demanding engineering project for its time.

The ground floor houses a large swimming pool, washing facilities, and saunas, forming the hall’s functional core. On the second floor, there are private relaxation booths, and visitors can look down onto the pool from café tables. Here, the experience becomes more spa-like, with several different saunas, including a traditional wood-fired sauna and a steam sauna. A smaller pool and group exercise facilities complete the ensemble.

When it opened, Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall was far more than just a place to swim. In the 1920s and 1930s, visitors could have their shoes polished, clothes pressed, and hair styled before heading directly from the sauna to a dance school or restaurant — a true centre of urban leisure.

Renovation with respect for heritage

Throughout the renovation, the swimming hall was treated as though it were a protected building. The project was carried out in close cooperation with the City of Helsinki’s cultural environment and building conservation experts, with the aim of safeguarding its historical, architectural, and cultural values.

The historic pool hall interiors are of exceptional architectural importance and are also technically unique, with the swimming pools stacked vertically—a rare solution at the time of construction. The renovation focused on preserving the original appearance and proportions of the spaces while improving accessibility and upgrading building services to meet modern standards and environmental goals. In line with public feedback, changes were kept deliberately minimal, with the most visible updates limited to the lifeguards’ control area and the ticket office.

– Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall is not only a sports facility but a nationally significant cultural landmark. Every design decision was carefully weighed to retain original materials, spatial qualities, and details wherever possible — especially the distinctive ceramic tiles dating from the 1920s, says Katri Olli, Project Manager of the Urban Environment Division at the City of Helsinki.

The renovation also introduced a new public artwork commissioned under Helsinki’s Percent for Art principle. Created by photographic artist Noora Sandgren, the work Water Bodies is composed of six glass-printed photographs installed at the entrance of the swimming hall. The piece celebrates water as a life-giving force and highlights the interaction between different organisms. Under the Percent for Art scheme, a portion of the city’s construction and renovation budgets is allocated to new public artworks.

A bathing experience like no other

Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall is unique among Helsinki’s public swimming facilities in offering visitors the option to swim either nude or wearing swimwear, according to personal preference. Swimming days are scheduled separately for women and men, continuing a long-standing tradition.

The two levels of the building offer contrasting but complementary experiences: the ground floor functions as a traditional swimming hall for exercise and laps, while the second floor invites visitors to linger in a more spa-like setting, with private booths, multiple saunas, and a café overlooking the pool. Together, they form a unique and much-loved combination of a public swimming hall and a historic urban spa.

Each episode centres on a different part of the country. The podcast invites listeners to pause, breathe and experience Wales through sound, using stillness and sensory elements to present the country as a place of rest and reconnection, alongside its well-known outdoor adventure.

“We want to share our warm ‘croeso’ and unique ‘hwyl’ with the world and invite them to not just see but feel, taste and truly experience the ‘must do’ things we have on offer,” highlights Visit Wales.

The project represents an innovative approach to tourism promotion, using meditation and storytelling to showcase the landscapes, language and spirit of Wales to a global audience.

The Chill Cymru launch comes as Visit Wales continues to explore new ways of promoting the country internationally, moving beyond traditional destination advertising. The Hwyl campaign emphasises how Wales feels rather than simply how it looks, highlighting emotion, atmosphere and a sense of place.

Warmth defines the experience from the outset, and not only in a physical sense. From the reception to the treatment room, the atmosphere is calm, welcoming, and efficient. For those, like me, who come specifically for the massage rather than a full spa day, the process is remarkably smooth. From arrival and preparation to being welcomed by the therapist, everything can be completed in around fifteen minutes. It makes the experience easy to fit into a busy working day.

Many guests, however, opt for a full spa day and finish with a massage. According to my masseuse, Geert, this is the ideal way to conclude the experience. “After spending time in the spa, ending with a Hot Stone Massage is perfect. Your body is already relaxed, and the massage helps lock in that feeling and take it even further,” he explained.

How the Hot Stone Massage unfolds

The Hot Stone Massage lasts fifty minutes and follows a carefully structured sequence designed to induce deep relaxation. The treatment begins with you lying on your stomach, your back covered with a thin towel. Several smooth basalt stones, heated to around 40–50°C, are placed on either side of the spine. While these stones gently warm the back muscles, other hot stones are used to massage the legs and feet.

“The stones are warm, but never uncomfortable,” Geert Briers noted. “We usually work with temperatures between 40 and 50°C. That is warm enough for the heat to penetrate deep into the muscles without causing any stress to the body.”

The focus on the feet is particularly noticeable. Rich in pressure points, they are worked thoroughly during the massage, helping tension to release throughout the body. The warmth allows muscles to relax naturally, without the need for strong pressure.

Once the legs and feet have been treated, the stones resting on the back are removed and replaced with new hot stones. The back massage that follows is slow, fluid, and deeply calming, encouraging both physical and mental relaxation.

Restoring balance through warmth and energy

The second part of the massage takes place with you lying on your back. A thin towel covers the belly and chest, while warm basalt stones are placed on specific chakras or energy centres. This is intended to release stagnant energy and restore balance within the body and mind. While these stones warm the front of the body, the therapist continues to massage the legs and arms using additional hot stones.

At this stage, the experience becomes almost meditative. Breathing slows, muscles soften, and the outside world fades into the background.

Health benefits beyond relaxation

While the immediate sensation is one of deep calm, the benefits go well beyond relaxation. The warmth of the volcanic stones radiates deep into muscles and connective tissues, improving circulation and helping the body eliminate waste products such as lactic acid. This makes the massage particularly beneficial after physical exertion.

“The heat allows us to work deeper into the muscles without applying extra pressure,” Geert Briers explained. “It helps loosen stiff areas, improves flexibility, and supports muscle recovery.”

Improved circulation also means that oxygen and nutrients are delivered more efficiently throughout the body. Many guests report better sleep, reduced stress levels, and an overall feeling of balance in the days following the treatment.

In my case, the effects were very tangible. After recent gym efforts, the massage provided genuine relief from muscle soreness rather than just temporary comfort.

Once functional testing is done, what’s the response? For many, the reset involves bespoke, customised, tailored medicine for a distinct purpose, rather than a “one supplement fits all” approach.

Still, Country & Town House predicts we’ll hear more going forward about creatine’s potential effects on bone health. Increasingly marketed at women, it’s not just for building muscle, but is “a well-researched compound,” nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert, founder of Rhitrition, told the publication, noting “that creatine may support muscle strength, bone density, cognitive function and even mood, especially during perimenopause and menopause.” Testosterone also continues to be big in women’s health.

1. Keep that body moisturised

One of the main reasons why our skin changes during the winter months is a drop in humidity. Outside, this may not always be the case – rain is common enough at the end of the year – but inside, chances are humidity levels have dropped exponentially due to central heating. And while an overly humid house is not something to aim for, too little humidity can be just as damaging for the body.

However, there are some things that need to be done about an overly dry environment. Firstly, investing in a humidifier might be well worth it if the problem is recurring.
