Expected to open in 2030, the Mandarin Oriental Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai, will be located within the ‘The Next Chapter’ development at Jumeirah Golf Estates in the south-west of Dubai.

Designed not just as a city hotel or a golfer’s retreat, the resort aims to be “a sanctuary where space, wellbeing, and nature meet,” with a strong focus on wellness, nature, and elevated living.

The hotel will offer 121 rooms and suites. The residential side will comprise 97 three- to six-bedroom branded villas, each with zoned amenities and private access to a lounge, fitness facilities, a pool, and a meeting space.

Commenting on the project, Laurent Kleitman, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental, said that the resort “represents an important milestone for the group as we continue to expand our presence in the region”. He added that “by combining world-class hospitality with golf, equestrian and wellness experiences, this resort will offer a lifestyle found nowhere else in the city, while the branded residences will create a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share an appreciation for exceptional living.”

Guests and residents will have access to the 18-hole championship golf course, driving range, and agronomy programmes. After a game, they will have the pleasure of unwinding at the Golf Clubhouse lounge with a drink or a chat at the bar, or perhaps enjoy a final workout at the gym.

Beyond golf, the resort will feature a pool, a fitness club, and a spa offering an array of wellness, massage, and beauty treatments in an immersive natural environment. There will also be male- and female-only pools, an outdoor meditation area, a barber and a salon, as well as three swimming pools.

Equestrian enthusiasts will not be disappointed either. The property boasts a 7,000 m² equestrian centre and clubhouse complete with indoor and outdoor riding arenas, stabling, and retail facilities. Perhaps best of all are the scenic riding trails that will be offered.

Parents travelling with children will appreciate the resort’s fully serviced Kids’ Club, complete with a nursery, which allows them to enjoy a round of golf or a ride without worrying about their little ones.

Plans are in place for a Mandarin Oriental luxury hotel to open inside the Wasl Tower later in 2025.

While golf might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Dubai – with its extreme heat and desert conditions that place heavy demands on turf, irrigation, and sustainability – the city still offers a surprisingly rich variety of premium courses.

Examples include the 36-hole Emirates Golf Club, the oldest, established in 1988, the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, in central Dubai, is the second oldest club, and has recently completed a full upgrade of its irrigation system, installing more than 40 kilometres of pipework and 3,000 sprinklers, or the Trump International Golf Club Dubai in DAMAC Hills, offering an 18-hole championship course and a floodlit nine-hole par-3 course.

1. California

California, which is currently battling its third straight year of drought conditions and its driest year on record, is still falling short of its water conservation targets. One of the main sources of fresh water for the state — the Colorado River — is also drying up. Now, the state is being forced to take steps to reduce water or the federal government will intervene. This could mean big cuts in water usage for the state’s golf industry, which counts nearly 1,000 courses, just a few hundred behind Florida, the nation’s golf capital.

2. Water usage

California’s golf industry has been operating in “Level 2 drought” conditions since 2009, which has cut water usage by 45%. However, with the latest drought restrictions coming into effect, Los Angeles, for example, which is home to nearly three dozen golf courses, has moved to a “Level 3” drought ordinance, which is aiming to reduce water usage by a further 30%. About 25% of the golf courses in Los Angeles county use recycled water, which is exempt from the state’s ordinance. But they are also irrigating with a 25% minimum reduction from their normal watering cycles.

3. Reducing irrigation

Other alternatives to save water include replacing water-intensive turf with more water-efficient grasses such as warm-season grass. Some of the state’s courses are investing in new irrigation systems that are more targeted. Southern California-based Rain Systems, a company founded by Jim and Elaine Sibert developed a novel tech able to reduce irrigation by as much as 50% and lasts for about three years.

“We have a patented technology which is part of a larger machine that installs hydrogels directly into the root-zone of turf seamlessly,” Sibert told the media outlet Ethos. “Our machine uses water pressure to create pin-point holes into existing turf while installing hydrogels into each injection point simultaneously. Once installed, the hydrogels absorb, store and release water back to the soil and the turf. This leads to a reduction in water needed by up to 50% while maintaining healthy green grass,” she added.

4. Trending sport

US golfers logged 20% more rounds in August 2020 than in August 2019, according to Golf.com. Overall, the industry saw an average uptick of more than 6%, and projections suggest an 8% year-on-year growth. Those who took up golf during the pandemic are likely to continue playing — sales of golf equipment jumped 32% in 2020 — and given golf equipment can be a significant financial investment, it’s likely to keep those new players on the course.

1. Royal Limburg Golf Club

The Royal Limburg Golf course was built on a free draining ground between heathland and wooded areas. It borders on the ‘Tenhaagdoornheide’ nature reserve to the east of Antwerp. The course was designed in 1966 by renowned British golf architect Fred Hawtree and was then built in 1967 and opened in 1968. The course was enlarged in 1970, with 7 additional holes being added to the original 9-hole course. The final 18-hole course was completed in 1972, when also the last two holes were added. Today, the Royal Limburg Golf club is an ideal course to play in both summer and winter and welcomes professionals, top players, as well as recreational members and visitors. Thanks to the growing number of members and visitors, the club can leverage on several funds that are used for annual improvements. Since 2007, the Royal Limburg Golf course is considered the best golf course in Belgium. Additionally, the club has established itself as an organizer and host of several important Belgian and European competitions. There, the first Omnium of Belgium in Houthalen was completed in 1977 and won by the American Bob Wynn. 2. Royal Zoute Golf Club

The Royal Zoute Golf Club is nestled in a wild landscape of pine, hawthorn hedges, silver birch and poplar trees. The club offers two courses: “l’Extérieur” (Championship Course), and “l’Intérieur” (Executive Course). The golf course was designed in 1909 by English architect Harry S. Colt, when he was just getting started in golf architecture. During World war I, play was suspended as the Germans used the course as a military field and bunkers. In 1925, His Majesty the King, Sir Maurice Lippens, allowed the club to assume the title of Royal. Following World War II, English Lieutenant Colonel Allen planned two links courses which became the existing Championship Course and the Executive Course. Despite several modifications and improvements occurred after the war, there is still a significant part of the course which is original work from Colt, particularly in the bunkering. The golf course is well-known for its challenging winds, which are the reasons why most of the holes offer plenty of space. Being located in Knokke – one of Belgium’s most renowned chic and classy destinations – the Royal Zoute Golf Club attracts Belgians upper crust and bureaucrats from Brussels. The golf club features a fine dining restaurant offering French cuisine perfect for both lunch or dinner. During the summer, visitors can relax on a beautiful terrace while admiring the golf course.

3. Royal Waterloo Golf Club 

The Royal Waterloo Golf Club was created in 1923 by a small group of businessmen in the borough of Rhode St Genèse. The initial course, which had 9 holes, was enlarged in 1925 to 18 holes. In 1928 the clubhouse, which was provisionally housed in the neighbouring farm, was transferred into an Anglo-Norman-style building. As the club entered its 35th year in 1957, it was designated as a Royal club. Following the denial of its lease renewal in 1959, the club had to move to a new location: An outstanding 140 hectare agricultural site located in the borough of Ohain. The club was inaugurated in 1961 on a majestic par 73 course named “La Marache” (also called “A-B”) and two 9-hole courses (named “C” and “D”) designed by famous British architect Fred Hawtree. In 1980, course “C” was renamed “Bois-Héros.” Simultaneously, the project of a new “championship” course was adopted: Course “D” was completed with an additional 9-hole course (Course “E”) to create the Lion, a par 72 of over 6000 metres. Between 2003 and 2006, the son Martin Hawtree renovated the bunkers and greens in accordance with USGA specifications. In 2008, the Clubhouse was renovated and expanded. Today, the club has more than 1920 members and is one of the most prestigious clubs of Europe.

The truth is that the game of golf evolved over centuries and was invented in its simplest form – the classic stick plus ball combo – by different people in different countries. According to some historians, the first games similar to golf were played in China, Laos, England, France, Holland, Belgium, and even in ancient Rome! Obviously, they were not played with the same rules as modern golf, but they were still pretty close. However, the most intriguing theories about the origins of golf come from Holland and Scotland.

1. The Dutch “colf”

The Dutch golf historian Steven J. H. van Hengel, one of the best experts on the origins of golf, argues that golf – originally named colf – was probably a blend of two ancient games (chole and jeu de mail) which were imported into Holland. Van Hengel traced colf back to the end of the 13^th century. During that period, colfer, or golfers, were a common subject in contemporary Dutch artworks, suggesting their popularity then. Colf was a long game, mainly played in the streets, and in courtyards.

During the 16^th and 17^th centuries, it started to be played on frozen canals, rivers, and lakes. Later on, the game was moved indoors. Throughout the 18^th century, colf became less and less popular and started to be replaced by kolf, a shorter game which was played on a 25-yard-long course. Thanks to the active trade industry between Holland and the ports on the east coast of Scotland, the game of kolf traveled all the way across the North Sea, reaching Scotland.

2. The origins of modern golf

Generally, the credit for the modern game of golf as we know it today – played with 18 holes – is given to the Scots. Historians believe that the Dutch term “colf” was later adapted to the Scottish dialect of the late-14th and early-15th century, and the term became “goff” or “gouff.” Only later in the 16th century the word “golf,” began to finally be spelled the way we all know it now.

In the 15^th century, the Scottish monarchy decided to ban golf several times. The first time was in 1457, when James II’s Act of Parliament of 6 March banned both golf and football. The reasons behind the ban are quite surprising: in Scotland, military training was compulsory for all males over 12. However, instead of focusing on archery and other military practices, young males preferred to spend their leisure time playing golf and football! The ban was repeated in 1471 and in 1491, meaning that the first ban was probably not entirely successful. 

In the 19th century, the popularity of golf increased exponentially. Its growth was mainly related to the Industrial Revolution and the development of the Scottish railway system, which allowed English tourists to take the train to Scotland for golf trips.

1. Seminole Golf Club, Juno Beach

Located in Juno Beach right on the Atlantic ocean, Seminole Golf Club was designed by the architect Donald Ross, founding member and first president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The golf club was built in 7 months and opened on January 1st, 1930. The golf course lies on a trapezoid area of 140 acres, where Ross strategically positioned the 18 holes in a way that players must deal with the wind from different directions. However, the greens and bunkers are not the originals of Ross as they were redesigned later in the 40s. The topography of the course is reminiscent of Scotland’s championship course Royal Dornoch, where Ross first learned how to play golf. The clubhouse is nestled in a pink stucco structure built in 1929 that still features original lockers made with California knotty pine. As one of the most exclusive golf courses, Seminole golf club has been chosen as the venue for the 48th Walker Cup held between 8 and 9 May 2021.

2. Naples National Golf Club, Naples

Naples is a high-end town located in southwest Florida, nestled on the Gulf of Mexico. Its golf club was created in 1992 by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, who both designed golf courses in several countries. Every hole is different and the shot options are challenging for players at different levels. One of its peculiarities is the presence of coral rock exposed in various sites of the court. The coral rock was excavated from the site around one meter down when the golf course was created. Instead of burying the rock or treating it as a fill as most Floridian golf courses do, in Naples National Golf Club the coral rock has been used to line the pounds, frame the holes, support the tee decks, and in many other ways. Probably, Naples National Golf Club was the first club in South Florida to use coral rock in such a way, adding  different colors to the green course. Suites and fine dining options as well as golf classes with professionals are available for club members and guests.

3. Lake Nona G. & C.C., Orlando

Lake Nona Golf & Country Club is situated at the heart of the Lake Nona Community in Southeast Orlando. The 18-hole championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio boasts breathtaking lake vistas and a secluded wooden canopy. It hosts several international golf tournaments, from amateurial to professional events. The professional staff offers specialized private lessons combined with video and computer programming to help guests (both adults and kids) improve their game strategy. 4. TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach 

The TPC Sawgrass Stadium course was designed in 1982 by architect Pete Dye from the initial idea by former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane R. Beman. The course was specifically created to host the annual PGA event, THE PLAYERS Championship. Held annually in March, THE PLAYERS championship is one of the most anticipated tournaments on the PGA TOUR calendar. Being the first true “Stadium Course,” TPC sawgrass aimed at improving the on-site fan experience. The course boasts a selection of short, medium and long holes, including one of the most famous, photographed and challenging holes in the world named “Island Green” (the 17th hole).

5. The Bear’s Club, Jupiter

The Bear’s Club was created in 1999 by Jack Nicklaus, an American retired golf professional nicknamed “The Golden Bear.” The golf course is situated in Jupiter, a city in Palm Beach County less than 2 km away from the Atlantic ocean. The beautiful golf community is nestled among 369 sylvan sandy acres rich of vegetation, oaks, pines, cypress trees and wetlands areas. Its 102 bunkers are inspired by the ones of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, which Nicklaus visited in 1998. The clubhouse in Tuscan style features an impressive stone façade which is in perfect harmony with the Mediterranean design of the residential community refined by Jack’s wife Barbara Nicklaus. The interiors are decorated with pieces of ceramic and porcelain, artworks, and fabrics, which makes it an impressively elegant property.

Nepali golfers created a history by playing one-hole golf at the Kongde Ri, at an altitude of 4,250 metres, in the Everest region. Bikash Rana hit the first tee shot on the 95-yard par-3 hole in Kongde Ri in the first phase of the Ncell Baahrakhari Golf Tournament in 2019.

1. Argentario Golf Resort & Spa

The Argentario Golf Resort & Spa is a 5-star resort located in Maremma, Tuscany. The resort has a PGA National Golf Course, as well as luxury rooms, a wellness center and two restaurants. 

The Golf facility covers 77 hectares and is located in a protected natural area. It includes a golf course with 18 panoramic holes that are immersed in the vegetation or dominate the sea and the lagoon. The course is entirely eco-friendly, and all products used for its maintenance are natural. For its eco-compatibility, the course has been awarded with the certification “BioAgriCert”.

The golf course and the driving range have been designed by the architect David Mezzacane and the professional golfer Baldovino Dassù. The holes were shaped by Brian Jorgensen.

Last year, the Argentario Golf Club became the first and only PGA licensed golf facility in Italy. It hosts numerous important golf tournaments.

2. Versilia Golf Resort

The Versilia Golf Resort, which opened in 1990, is an elegant and exclusive golf resort located by the coast in Forte dei Marmi. The resort is immersed in a spectacular landscape, combining the sea and the Apuan Alps and is set in a strategic location in the heart of Versilia and close to some of the most important Tuscan cities. Forte dei Marmi is a luxury town, famous for its restaurants, bars, and discos where you can enjoy the night life.

The golf course was designed by the Venetian architect Marco Croze and it has 18 holes. 3. Il Pelagone Hotel and Golf Resort

Il Pelagone Hotel and Golf Resort is a spacious complex immersed in a magical Tuscan landscape within green hills and olive groves.

4. Toscana Resort Castelfalfi

The Resort Castelfalfi is a luxury resort surrounded by vineyards and olive trees and situated right in the heart of Tuscany.

With over 9,400 meters of fairways, Castelfalfi is home of the largest golf course in Tuscany. The golf course is bordered by groves and olive trees and has been designed by the architects Preißmann and Moroder. The 27-hole layout comprises two different courses suitable for both professional golfers and beginners. 

The Mountain course is one of the most difficult courses in Italy due to its high technical content. Its layout offers different game strategies as well as a breathtaking panoramic view over the Castle of Castelfalfi.The Lake course is a shorter course with a fun layout suitable also for beginners. 

Castelfalfi Resort is committed to respect the nature and preserve the landscape. Thanks to the eco-friendly maintenance techniques and the use of rainwater to irrigate the courses, the Golf Club Castelfalfi has been awarded with the GEO CertifiedTM eco-label.

Golf courses aside, Castelfalfi has also many other facilities, such as swimming pools, a spa, a shop selling local wines and extra-virgin olive oil, and restaurants serving high quality dishes exclusively made with Tuscan products.
