With the summer season just around the corner, Royal Beach Club Santorini comes right on time for those wanting to spend a relaxing day on Santorini’s southern coastline. Entrance to the Royal Beach Club Santorini is bookable as part of a shore excursion, known as the Ultimate Santorini Day. During that excursion, guests are taken on a tour around Santorini. Stops include Oia, where travellers get to wander cliffside paths where whitewashed buildings and blue domes spill toward the sea, while a stroll through the village lets them discover charming shops, caldera views, and cascading architecture. Afterwards, cruise travellers visit Santorini’s buzzing capital city, Fira, a mix of dramatic landscapes and vibrant daily life.

Local residents, too, can access the beach club by paying an entry fee. According to the cruise company, local Greek residents will be able to purchase tickets at the door on days that a Royal Caribbean Group ship is in port, based on availability.

What’s included?

The club, located on a stretch of beach characterised by its volcanic black sand, comes with a set of perks. For example, visitors can relax on one of the loungers with plush towels and umbrellas on the beach while listening to the tunes of the on-site DJ. Thanks to the all-you-can-eat buffet and all-you-can-drink bar – featuring draft beer, house wines, and nonalcoholic beverages – there is no need to go hungry or thirsty during a visit. 

According to Royal Caribbean, the food menu features fresh, authentic Greek cuisine inspired by ge flavours of the Aegean. The club also has a Greek frozen yoghurt machine, perfect for a touch of refreshment on a hot summer’s day on the beach.

First announced in November 2025, Royal Beach Club Santorini marks Royal Caribbean’s second beach club world-wide, following the opening of Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau. The Royal Beach Club Cozumel in Mexico (2026) and Royal Beach Club Lelepa (2027) are likely to be the next to open and are part of a larger move by Royal Caribbean Group to expand its land-based offer.

The MSC Euribia has left Dubai, passed through the Strait, and left the region “on course to resume her Northern Europe season,” MSC Cruises told Cruise Hive. The sailing happened “in close coordination with the relevant authorities,” the cruise line said, even though it appeared to happen unexpectedly, since the cruise line had only cancelled the Euribia’s 16 and 17 May itineraries in the Baltic and North Seas two days earlier. It has now reinstated those northern European departures, starting with the cruise departing on May 16 from Kiel (and May 17 from Copenhagen).

The 16 May sailing departs Kiel, Germany, for a 7-night voyage calling at Copenhagen, Denmark, where it will pick up more guests on 17 May, and going on to Hellesylt, Alesund, and Flam in Norway. The firm has clarified that guests who took up options to refund or take a cruise credit when the departure was thought to be cancelled now have the chance to “transfer their booking to this sailing should they wish, and will be contacted directly with further details,” MSC said.

The ship will continue tosail northern European waters until mid-October, before heading to the Mediterranean for a winter season that includes sailings from Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Naples, and Palermo for the winter season. It is scheduled to return to Kiel and Copenhagen again in spring 2027.

Celestyal Cruises’ Celestyal Discovery also departed Dubai on Friday, 17 April en route to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, where it is due to operate a three-night Iconic Greek Islands itinerary on 1 May 2026. The Celestyal Journey, too is sailing off the coast of Oman, at the time of writing, on its way to Cape Town. It is due to sail a Heavenly Greece, Italy, and Croatia itinerary departing Athens on 2 May.

The firm announced a consultation period that would mean job losses for “a limited number of roles across its UK and global offices, including a review of the Celestyal Travel business,” following the suspension of operations in the Gulf, as part of restructuring moves that represent “a limited adjustment relative to the overall size of the business and are part of a measured response to external circumstances,” a statement said.

Meanwhile, TUI Cruises said in a press release that Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5 have been able to depart Doha where they had been stuck since the start of hostilities. They successfully traversed the Strait of Hormuz, despite the Mein Schiff 4 reportedly being threatened by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and an impact narrowly missing the ship, according to security firm Vanguard Tech.

The ships will sail on to the Mediterranean. The Mein Schiff 4 was supposed to sail a five-day round-trip from Palma on 1 May, calling at Marseille, Barcelona, and Valencia, while the Mein Schiff 5 was supposed to be serving routes out of Heraklion, Greece. “Further details regarding the route and timing will be communicated as soon as they are confirmed,” the firm said.

MSC Group, the company behind MSC Cruises and Explore Journeys, has unveiled its plans for a new luxury private island in the Bahamas. MSC first hinted at the project in January 2026, but has now added more details in a press release. Sandy Cay, as the new destination will be called, should open its doors to the public in 2028.

“The success of Ocean Cay helped validate our long-term vision for private destinations, and ultimately led to the development of Sandy Cay. So, as MSC Cruises continues to grow … in North America, and we continue to increase capacity from U.S. homeports, adding Sandy Cay allows us to expand capacity while offering guests more variety and more tailored experiences in line with the brand,” Lynn Torrent, president of MSC Cruises North America, said in an interview with USA TODAY.

Although it is located next to the already existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the new island will act as its “intimate complement”. The island will be more secluded and will invite guests to immerse themselves in the natural rhythms of the ocean and the spirit of The Bahamas.

“It’ll have sort of its own soul and DNA, where elegance is fused with the authentic spirit of the Bahamas, preserving that very relaxed, genuine atmosphere that our guests love about Ocean Cay, but really an extension of that,” Torrent continues.

According to a first rendering shared by the MSC Group, guests should expect an island with pristine aragonite sand, surrounded by turquoise waters, and a collection of buildings and pools for cruise travellers to enjoy during their stopover. More details should follow soon.

MSC Cruises and private islands

The news of the opening comes in a busy year for MSC Cruises, and soon after the company’s announcement to enhance the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Plans include new facilities and experiences designed to further enhance the guest offering on the island, such as additional dining venues, new beach concepts for families and adults, expanded relaxation areas, and new ways for guests to engage with marine conservation through immersive experiences. Moreover, construction work has begun on extending the pier to accommodate two ships simultaneously. The novelties should be ready for guests to enjoy by late 2027.

The Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve has been open since 2019. What was once a sand excavation site was cleared by MSC and “dedicated to the restoration of marine resources and the ongoing conservation of marine life”. For example, some 7,500 tons of scrap metal were removed from the site, while the company relocated coral to the area in an effort to encourage its growth and repopulation. During their stopover, MSC travellers can enjoy a drink, grab a bite, or participate in one of the many shore excursions.

Released on 10 April, Cruising for Impact is a comprehensive research report analysing the industry’s economic and social footprint. Its findings provide a welcome counterpoint to the heavy criticism that the sector has faced in recent years regarding pollution, overcrowding and its limited perceived contribution to local economies.

The report positions cruise tourism as a major economic driver and highlights its importance across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. It states that, in 2024, the industry generated around $98.5 billion (£83.6 billion) in direct global GDP contribution and close to $199 billion (£167 billion) in total economic output, while sustaining approximately 1.8 million jobs and paying $60.1 billion (£51 billion) in wages.

Beyond the headline figures, the report highlights an often-overlooked longer-term effect: over 60% of cruise passengers who first discover a location while on a cruise will return afterwards to explore it further, creating sustained demand and extended benefits for local economies.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC’s President & CEO, said that “when travellers discover a destination through cruising and choose to return, they create ongoing opportunities for local businesses, support jobs, and contribute to the long-term vitality of those communities”.

According to the report, one full-time job is supported for every 20 cruise passengers globally. These roles extend well beyond the ship to encompass hospitality, local entrepreneurs, small tourism businesses, and micro-economies.

The benefits extend far beyond employment and wages. The report points to wider effects, from skills development and inclusion to cultural preservation and infrastructure improvements, including accessibility and sustainability projects.

Addressing the other side of the coin, namely, persistent concerns around overtourism, often illustrated by images of city-like ships disembarking large numbers of travellers into small destinations, the report argues that this is only part of the story. Globally, around 80% of tourists are concentrated in just 10% of destinations, and cruise tourism can help spread visitors more evenly.

Importantly, the report also sets out a series of recommendations for the future, from embedding cruise tourism in inclusive growth strategies, strengthening community partnerships, aligning infrastructure with social value, expanding skills pathways, and improving how impact is measured.

Cruise lines are also increasingly stepping up in times of crisis, according to the report, which cites their role in delivering humanitarian aid and providing shelter after hurricanes.

Environmental initiatives such as shore power, marine conservation and coral restoration, also highlighted in projects by Havila Voyages and MSC Cruises, are presented as measures that can contribute to both environmental goals and community resilience.

Finally, the industry is notable for its inclusivity, with a workforce drawn from over 150 countries. Around 40% of senior leadership roles in the cruise sector are now held by women, as are over 50% of mid-level and higher positions.

However, relatively few reach the very top: only around six to eight women are currently serving as CEOs or presidents of notable cruise lines and brands. Their numbers roughly doubled in the early 2020s, but have since plateaued.

Looking ahead, cruise passenger capacity is expected to grow by 19% between 2022 and 2028. This raises important questions about how to sustain the sector’s economic, social and environmental gains in the long term.

Travellers visiting South Korea by air have been able to benefit from in-city tax refunds for a long time. However, cruise passengers entering under a shore-excursion permit instead of through the standard visa process were excluded from that policy. With some 810,000 cruise passengers visiting South Korea in 2024 – a number that is expected to hit 2 million in 2026 – it became time to address that issue.

Starting from 6 April 2026, a new tax refund policy has been adopted by South Korea’s customs service. Henceforward, international cruise passengers will be eligible to receive immediate or downtown refunds of internal taxes. Those taxes include the value-added tax (VAT) as well as the individual consumption tax on products that are purchased at designated duty-free stores.

“With the implementation of this service, cruise tourists will be able to enjoy both the pleasure of shopping and the convenience of tax refunds even during their short stays in Korea,” Korea Customs Service Commissioner Lee Myung-koo said in a press release.

Tax refund specifics

The new tax refund policy for cruise passengers falls under the Restriction of Special Taxation Act and the Special Regulations for Foreign Tourists. Tourists will be able to either buy goods at tax-excluded prices directly at a range of participating stores (amounting to 23,000 stores throughout the country), or receive their tax refunds at specifically-designed city or seaport refund counters when leaving South Korea.

Whether an immediate tax exclusion is possible or not generally depends on the purchase price. According to CruiseHive, immediate refunds are applicable for purchases up to 1 million Korean won (€577) per transaction, with a limit of 5 million won overall (€2,886). For purchases of up to 6 million Korean won (€3,464) per transaction, a refund can be obtained at the city or seaport refund counters.

According to the Korea Customs Service, the new policy should shorten waiting time at customs clearances, while easing the overall tax refund process for cruise tourists, even during short stays.

The new policy comes at a time when cruise companies are faced with starkly increased costs due to the high fuel prices caused by the US-Israel war on Iran. Making tax refunds more accessible for cruise passengers could strengthen South Korea’s position as a cruise destination in a difficult market.

The Te Waharoa works are expected to draw 100,000 more visitors thanks to more ship calls since they are designed to allow a large ship of 4,500 or more passengers to discharge or load comfortably within three hours, instead of having to anchor in harbour and tender guests to shore on small boats, which Port of Auckland CEO Roger Gray has slammed as “a terrible customer experience.” The change will ensure instead “the efficient movement of visitors and a high-quality first impression of Auckland as they arrive in the heart of the city,” he said.

Mayor Wayne Brown hailed the port investment as a transformation that will “lift the experience of visitors arriving in our city from the water. With 3,200 kilometres of coastline, Auckland’s harbor and waterfront is a big part of what makes our city unique,” he said, adding: “By opening up our wharves, we are transforming industrial zones into vibrant, accessible public spaces for visitors and Aucklanders.”

Some ports and harbours around the world are pursuing policies that go in the opposite direction, restricting numbers of large boats due to overtourism, pollution concerns, and criticism that cruise passengers do not spend money in the places where they disembark. The issue has seen traction in Spain, where Barcelona cut dock capacity by 30% after Mayor Ada Colau described a “feeling of collapse” when thousands of people arrive in the city at once. In France too, legislators have proposed a “polluter pays” port call fee, and Cote d’Azur destinations such as Cannes have imposed limits on cruise ship arrivals.

But in New Zealand, official statements highlight that tourism is the country’s second largest export, generating around 7.7% of national GDP. What’s more, with around 300,000 cruise visitors passing through annually, the cruise sector is worth over $600 million a year for Auckland alone. Increasing the port’s capacity is therefore a strategy that policymakers say “supports Auckland’s long-term prosperity. The incident took place on Saturday, 5 April, during a “severe squall” according to initial statements from Fiji-headquartered tourism company, Blue Lagoon Cruises, when the anchor of the MV Fiji Princess was dragged towards a nearby reef, causing the grounding.

The reef in question is situated near the desert island of Monuriki, about 970 km south of the Cook Islands and just 45 km west of the city of Nadi. The Tom Hanks movie Cast Away was filmed on Monuriki in the years 1999 and 2000. Unlike Hanks’ character Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems analyst who becomes stranded for four years after a plane crash, the cruise ship’s manifest of 30 passengers and 17 of its 31-strong crew were safely evacuated from their cruise ship by ferry early the next morning. They were taken to Denarau Island.

The ship, however, has not escaped without injury. An initial assessment by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) found “the vessel has suffered serious damage to its rear left side, including the area where the steering equipment is located. Part of the vessel underneath has also been damaged.”

The ship “also experienced engine failure and was reported to be taking in water following the grounding. Due to rough seas and strong waves, officers were unable to safely inspect the vessel underwater at the time,” a spokesperson said.

Fears of an oil spill ensued due to the 20,000 litres of diesel fuel reported to be in the ship’s tanks. With the stormy conditions preventing the fuel’s immediate removal, containment booms and other equipment were taken to the vicinity. It has now been reported that the oil has been safely recovered with the help of an Australian salvage specialist.

Fiji is currently suffering floods, school and road closures amid tropical cyclone Vaianu, which has also prompted warnings to maritime operators and seafarers to remain vigilant and prioritise safety at all times. MSAF issued a notice to all passenger and cargo transport operations in the Western Division to cease operations effective 9 am on Tuesday local time. Flights departing and arriving at Nadi were also cancelled at the time of writing due to the adverse weather.

Up the Amazon

Up to six guests will embark on a one-way expedition with a full-board riverboat on the Amazon River Basin’s Rio Negro. Functioning as a safe haven, the boat will take travellers up the river and into the wilderness. Thanks to a combination of canoe rides, walks, and even tree climbing sessions, travellers get to enjoy the forest in a seldom-seen way.

The announcement means that Explora cruises planned for Bahrain, Egypt. Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE between November 2026 and March 2027 will now not take place. Instead, passengers will be offered new Western Mediterranean and North African sailings, calling at iconic ports such as Casablanca, sought-after islands like Madeira and Ibiza, as well as some of the Med’s most picturesque settings on Santorini and Capri. Though further details are yet to be confirmed, one season highlight will be the chance to see New Year’s Eve fireworks in Cannes.

Full refunds can be claimed for the cancelled itineraries, or to make up for any potential disappointment, Explora is offering a 10% discount until 30 April for passengers already booked on the cancelled departures who wish to take up a reservation on a new Mediterranean sailing. They will also each benefit from a €433.70 credit to treat themselves to an excursion.

Alternatively affected guests have the option to postpone their Gulf voyages to the winter 2027-28 season, when Exploras I and V are scheduled sail the Middle East and Red Sea. For the Explora V, boasting fuel cell technology, 2027 will be the maiden season, with launch in December of that year.

“This decision has been taken well in advance, following careful consideration and reflecting Explora Journeys’ commitment to providing guests and travel advisors with clarity and confidence as they plan their future Journeys,” Explora said in a notice to guests.

As the statement points out, the move reflects one of the longest-term cancellations yet among a cruise sector already forced by the current conflict to cut short, divert, or cancel dozens of sailings. For some firms, vessels are stuck sheltering in place in Gulf ports, effectively under siege by the tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. That includes Celestyal Cruises whose ships remain in Doha and Dubai, and so are unable to fulfill European operations.

Explora’s owner MSC Cruises also wrote off five sailings after the outbreak of hostilities in the region, including the final three departures of the ship’s winter programme from Dubai scheduled for 14, 21 and 28 March 2026, ending its current winter season early and telling guests: “Your safety and wellbeing are always our highest priority.”

The design of Marguerite takes inspiration from the daisy flower, called “marguerite” in French, which grows widely in the Burgundy countryside. This influence can be seen in the soft yellow tones, floral patterns, and light-filled interiors found throughout the boat. Decorative elements such as stained glass and handcrafted furniture have been created by French artisans, bringing local craftsmanship on board. These details are combined with modern design choices, including clean lines and natural materials, to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The result is a space that feels both contemporary and closely connected to the region’s cultural heritage. 

Marguerite is designed to host a small number of guests, accommodating up to eight people at a time. There are four cabins, each with a private bathroom, offering comfort and privacy for those on board. Large windows in the cabins allow guests to enjoy views of the passing landscapes during the day, while the interiors are designed to promote rest at night. The boat also includes an open-plan salon and a dining area where guests can gather. Outside, a spacious deck features an area for outdoor dining as well as a heated plunge pool, allowing travellers to relax while surrounded by the scenery of the Burgundy waterways.
