Standby means that a passenger asks to travel on another flight without receiving a seat immediately. A seat is only assigned if one becomes available, for example, after another traveller cancels or changes their booking. With the new tool, passengers select up to three possible earlier flights through the app. United then monitors seat availability in the background instead of requiring customers to repeatedly check the app themselves.

The passenger’s replacement booking remains confirmed while they wait for an earlier option. If a seat becomes available, United sends a text message, and the customer can choose whether to switch flights. If they decide not to take it, they keep their existing confirmed reservation. This offers more flexibility for travellers who have been moved from an afternoon flight to a much later evening departure.

“This feature reflects our commitment to making travel more seamless and less stressful for our customers,” Jennifer Schwierzke, United’s Vice President of Customer Operations, Strategy and Execution, said. “During disruptions, customers can keep their confirmed itinerary and stand by for three additional flights.” She added that United monitors availability and alerts customers when a seat opens up. The airline describes the combination of multi-flight standby and a protected confirmed reservation as an industry first.

The new option arrived ahead of the busy US Labour Day travel period. United expects more than 3.4 million passengers to fly with the airline between 3 and 8 September, around 300,000 more than during the same period last year. During crowded travel periods, a passenger may have several flights to choose from but few available seats. The tool cannot create an empty seat on a full aircraft, but it could save travellers time and reduce the need to keep refreshing their screen.

The feature may be particularly useful for passengers travelling through one of United’s large hubs, where several flights to the same destination may operate in a day. A missed connection can otherwise mean waiting many hours for the next available departure. Rather than joining a long queue at an airport service desk, travellers can see their options and make a request through their phone. Passengers should still ensure that their phone is charged and that they can receive the text message from United.

It is part of a wider effort by the airline to turn its app into a tool for managing disrupted journeys. United says customers can already use it to rebook flights, receive eligible meal or hotel vouchers and track checked baggage. The app also provides estimated security waiting times at United’s US hubs and shows where an inbound aircraft is coming from. Travellers using an Apple AirTag or another Find My network accessory can also share its location with United’s customer service team if their baggage is delayed or mishandled.

United has also developed app functions for passengers with tight connections. Its ConnectionSaver technology assesses whether a departing aircraft can be held briefly for passengers arriving on a delayed flight, without causing wider operational problems. The app can show the next gate, estimated walking times and live updates about the connection. If the aircraft cannot wait, the new standby feature may offer another way for passengers to try to leave earlier after being rebooked.

Digital tools can make straightforward disruption cases easier to handle, but they do not replace airline staff in every situation. Travellers with complex itineraries, special assistance needs, or no further flights to their destination may still need help from an agent. Flight delays can also be caused by weather, crew shortages, air traffic control restrictions or aircraft issues, none of which an app can solve. The new feature mainly gives passengers more control over the options that remain available.

The update also fits within United’s broader focus on customer experience as the airline expands its network. In August, the carrier announced its largest international expansion to date, with 10 new destinations planned for 2027. As more passengers pass through its hubs and connect to international flights, quick access to rebooking information could become increasingly important. For now, the three-flight standby tool gives disrupted passengers a clearer way to look for an earlier route home without giving up the flight they already have.

The “significant flash flooding” struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas on Saturday, 29 August, according to the National Park Service (NPS). Two people were confirmed dead, while more than 80 people were evacuated from the affected areas. At least one person remained unaccounted for in the days following the disaster, according to CBS News.

The flooding caused widespread damage to infrastructure in the inner canyon, including nearly every footbridge spanning Bright Angel Creek. More than 60 people were evacuated by helicopter from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail as floodwaters swept through the area.

One of the most significant consequences has been damage to the Transcanyon Waterline, the system that supplies water from the canyon for use throughout the park. The waterline is currently not operational, leaving the Grand Canyon with limited water reserves and forcing officials to introduce Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim.

Under the restrictions, all overnight guest accommodation operated by park concessionaires has been closed for the foreseeable future. This includes El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Phantom Ranch, Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village RV Park. Hotels located outside the park in Tusayan are not affected by the restrictions.

“These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of water resources,” the NPS wrote in a statement. “We are asking residents and visitors to help conserve water by limiting showers to five minutes or less, turning off faucets while shaving or brushing teeth, flushing toilets selectively, washing laundry with full loads, and reporting leaks to the appropriate offices.”

Camping is also limited. Only dry camping is permitted on the South Rim, with campground water spigots turned off, although bathroom faucets remain operational. Fires are prohibited in the South Rim and inner canyon areas, including wood-burning and charcoal fires.

The park itself remains open for day use, with food and beverage services, the Grand Canyon Clinic and the Post Office continuing to operate, although some services may have reduced hours. 

The Colorado River has also been closed to river traffic until further notice because of metal structures and debris entering the river. Visitors with upcoming river trips have been advised to contact their commercial outfitter or the NPS River Permits office for information specific to their trip.

The flooding occurred during the region’s monsoon season, when intense rainfall can rapidly funnel through the Grand Canyon’s steep, rocky terrain. The Guardian reported that the storm also affected areas scarred by the 2025 Dragon Bravo wildfire, where reduced vegetation can increase runoff. Researchers cited by the newspaper also pointed to drought, warming temperatures and a potentially stronger El Niño as factors that may have contributed to the extreme rainfall.

With further thunderstorms and heavy rainfall possible, the NPS has warned that additional flash flooding, debris flows, rockfall and rapidly changing trail and river conditions could occur.

The proposal would not close the airport or prevent scheduled commercial flights from arriving and departing. Instead, airlines would be able to use the airspace if they comply with specific procedures set by the FAA. This is important because a conventional presidential no-fly zone would severely limit routine operations at the airport. The FAA said such a restriction would make its main runway effectively unusable. The special rules are therefore designed as a compromise between security requirements and the need to maintain air links to Palm Beach.

Aircraft using the restricted airspace would need to file a flight plan before departure. A flight plan provides air traffic control with details including an aircraft’s intended route, its capabilities and the purpose of the flight. Pilots would also need authorisation from air traffic control and would have to maintain two-way radio contact while in the area. In addition, aircraft must use a discrete transponder code assigned by air traffic control, allowing controllers to identify and track them on radar. These requirements would apply to commercial flights and other authorised aircraft entering the designated zone.

Emergency, lifesaving and law-enforcement flights would also be able to access the airspace when necessary. Their operators would need to coordinate with the airport’s control tower and remain in communication with air traffic control. The focus of the proposal is therefore not on stopping all aircraft, but on preventing unidentified or unauthorised flights from approaching a protected location. The Secret Service said the measures would improve its ability to manage the “persistent risks posed by unauthorized aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems”. Drones have become a growing security concern because they can be operated from a distance and can be difficult to detect or identify quickly.

Temporary flight restrictions have already been in place around Mar-a-Lago since October 2025. Those interim measures are due to expire in October 2026, but the FAA’s new proposal would create a permanent framework instead. The agency routinely introduces wider flight restrictions when a US president or vice president travels outside Washington, DC. However, Mar-a-Lago’s regular use by Trump means the FAA and Secret Service are seeking rules that can remain in place beyond individual visits. Similar restrictions have previously been introduced around presidential and vice-presidential properties, though the FAA says the airport’s location makes the Palm Beach case particularly complex.

The airport itself was renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport in July 2026. It is one of South Florida’s major airports, behind Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in daily passenger traffic. Its proximity to Mar-a-Lago means that aircraft approaching or leaving the airport may need to pass through the proposed restricted area. For travellers using commercial airlines, the FAA’s proposal should mean flights can continue as normal, provided that operators follow the required procedures. Santa Claus will also have a new meeting location this year. From 13 November through 24 December, he will greet guests at Mickey’s Toontown Trolley Barn near Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin at Disneyland Park. He will also appear at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail at Disney California Adventure.

Several of Disneyland’s most recognisable holiday traditions will return. “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” will once again travel along Main Street, U.S.A., featuring Disney characters, toy soldiers, dancing reindeer and gingerbread cookies. The “Believe…In Holiday Magic” fireworks spectacular will also return, with snowfall and fireworks adding to the nighttime experience.

The park’s seasonal attraction makeovers will include “Haunted Mansion Holiday” and “it’s a small world” Holiday. Cars Land at Disney California Adventure will again feature Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree, while Sleeping Beauty Castle will become Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle, illuminated by more than 80,000 lights each evening.

“World of Color – Season of Light” will return from 13 November at Disney California Adventure. The resort will also bring back Disney Festival of Holidays, with seasonal food, music and cultural performances like “Mirabel’s Gifts of the Season” at Paradise Gardens Park, which will bring Mirabel and her friends to life with stories and songs from Disney Animation’s “Encanto”.

On select evenings from 13 November through 6 January, guests at Disney California Adventure can also enjoy “A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland & Miguel!”, featuring Miguel from Disney and Pixar’s “Coco”. Disney ¡Viva Navidad! will also return to celebrate the holidays with live music, specialty dishes and character appearances inspired by Latin American traditions, while the Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party will feature The Three Caballeros alongside Mexican folklórico dancers, mariachis and Brazilian samba dancers. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and The Three Caballeros will also appear in festive attire at Paradise Gardens Park throughout the celebration.

Holiday celebrations will extend beyond the theme parks. Downtown Disney District will feature seasonal decorations, food, entertainment and nightly simulated snowfall, while Chip and Dale’s Ornament Trail will return from 11 November through 6 January.

The 2026 season will also bring new festive merchandise, including the Mickey Mouse and Family Christmas Collection and Disney Vintage Holiday Collection, which feature festive apparel, accessories, and home decor. The festive offerings will include the Mickey Train Light-Up popcorn bucket and Holiday Stitch Christmas Tree sipper, alongside seasonal food specials such as the Cool Mint and Chocolate Cookie Mickey Elf Shake at Schmoozies! and the sweet-tart Merry Cranberry Crispy Chicken Sandwich at Galactic Grill.

Christmas is definitely coming to town at Disney, as the park goes all in on the festive spirit with new visual touches, including fresh looks for Mickey and friends, alongside the return of many of its most recognisable holiday traditions.

Tampa International Airport in Florida said in late August 2026 that instead of joining the “TSA Gold+” pilot alongside Charleston Air Force Base and Des Moines airports, it would continue checkpoint screening with existing federal TSA officers.

The privatisation was proposed after a national budget dispute caused a prolonged federal government shutdown at the end of 2025, estimated by the US Travel Association to have cost the country’s travel and tourism sector €6 billion – money it could ill afford to lose amid a well-documented “Trump Slump” in the visitor economy.

During the shutdown, essential federal employees are supposed to keep working without pay, but the extent of the impasse, which lasted 43 days and was the longest in US history, led to unpaid workers, including TSA agents, walking out. This, in turn, created mass transportation delays and disruption across the country.

The Gold+ scheme had the stated aim of avoiding any recurrence of those issues, and would have handed transport security oversight to a public-private partnership, with a new private workforce conducting airport screening operations, rather than federal TSA officers. Over 800 TSA job losses would have ensued at the Tampa hub alone if the scheme were implemented.

The airport’s abandonment of Gold+ is being interpreted by worker representatives, such as Tatishka Thomas, National Vice President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) District 5, as “a clear vote of confidence in the federal employees who currently perform this critical work.” AFGE had already challenged the programme in a lawsuit, requesting that details of the secretive plan be made public. Thomas said: “Ensuring the safety and security of the flying public is too important to contract out to the lowest bidder.”

Tampa airport CEO Michael Stephens explained that the U-turn is the result of careful and deliberate consideration of how Gold+ might improve the flow of traffic for long-term stability. But “ultimately, while the administrators expressed gratitude to TSA for attempting to provide an alternative,” it will not go ahead at Tampa now, he said.

The TSA will now attempt to implement a so-called “SPP System” (Screening Partnership Program) instead of Gold+. SPP consists of broadly similar policies to Gold+ but will be mandatory if the government gets its way. It is currently in place at 20 airports around the country, and the TSA wants to increase that ten-fold, arguing that SPP hubs such as San Francisco experienced far less disruption during the federal shutdown since their workers are paid through a private payroll.

But it was not until the singer and philanthropist died in late August that the campaign picked up significant traction, with “tens of thousands of additional supporters” visiting the site and signing the petition addressed to the Metro Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA), according to the organisers.

High-profile figures putting their weight behind the cause include Parton’s fellow music artists Sheryl Crow and 1970s country-rock star Emmylou Harris, as well as Republican Tennessee State Representative Todd Warner, who said he would “definitely introduce legislation to rename the BNA airport Dolly Parton International Airport!”

Russ Bradford, Nashville City Councillor, has also given his support to the calls, hailing Parton as more than just a country music icon. He said: “She’s a global ambassador for our city, our state, and everything we love about Tennessee. From her philanthropic work through the Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, to putting Nashville on the map for millions of visitors around the world, few people have done more to define what this city means to the rest of the world.”

The pair are seeking to develop LA’s first-ever “vertiport” – a transport hub that allows electric air taxis to take off and land vertically. The facility is planned for LA Live, a district centred on sports and leisure and home to the Peacock Theatre, The Novo, the GRAMMY Museum and other entertainment and hospitality venues. It is also close to the Crypto.com Arena and Los Angeles Convention Center, and has been described as a “flagship downtown location” by Archer founder and chief executive Adam Goldstein.

The goal is for air taxis from LA Live to fan out across an entire network, with destinations including Hollywood Burbank Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, SoFi Stadium and the University of Southern California also in the pipeline.

As for the aircraft, having been selected as the official air taxi provider for the LA28 Games, Archer is continuing work on “Midnight,” a fully electric eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft) with room for four passengers. The air taxi’s “Team USA” livery was unveiled at the same time as the LA Live vertiport announcement. The cockpit and fuselage are sleek black and white, with a bright blue tail, discreet red stripes and modest Team USA lettering.

Archer has yet to complete all the steps necessary to secure regulatory approval for the aircraft. Alongside AEG, it must also undertake feasibility studies for the LA Live vertiport, scrutinising land use, airspace capacity, power infrastructure and community impact.

Nick Baker, president and chief operating officer of AEG Global Partnerships, hailed the project as an opportunity to “enhance the fan experience around the major sports and live-entertainment events we host,” and said it required “forward-thinking collaboration that blends infrastructure and technology in service of our fans, visitors, and the broader community around major sports and live-entertainment events hosted at LA LIVE.”

Part of that passenger experience is Midnight’s maximum speed of 241.4 km/h, fast enough to significantly cut journey times compared to travelling by car across the City of Angels. For instance, a 14-minute air taxi journey from Hollywood Burbank Airport to SoFi Stadium could cut the equivalent road journey by around 45 minutes. SoFi, now officially designated as the 2028 Stadium, is a key venue for the global sporting event, co-hosting the opening ceremony and housing the largest swimming pool in Olympic history.

The wider region and its tourism offer could be set to benefit from Archer’s Midnight air service too, as the firm promises to fly visitors to Newport Harbor in Orange County for dolphin and whale-watching excursions in just 12 minutes, compared with nearly an hour by car.

A Parton statue nearby in her native Sevierville is currently adorned with tributes—and no wonder. The Smokies are the most biodiverse park in the US, boasting over 19,000 species, the National Park Service says. Around 1,300 km of trails lead to places such as Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome, offering panoramic Appalachian vistas, mountain waterfalls, and historic cabins. And, of course, the local legend of Dolly … that will live on. United may be number one for profits right now, but like other carriers in the current market, it faces cost challenges and barriers to growth, including limited airport slot capacity and manufacturing delays on new aircraft. United is already ranked in first place for international capacity and has specialised in developing US routes to what Simple Flying calls “secondary destinations” such as  Bilbao and Mallorca in Spain, Palermo in Italy, and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia (via Tokyo).

That strategy is set to continue with Kirby talking up the carrier’s South American and southeastern US networks, potentially turning Miami International into a new regional hub. American Airlines currently dominates slots there.

On America’s other coast, Delta has opened up a new front in the battle for transpacific flyers, in which Delta aims to overtake United, using Los Angeles (LAX) as a hub to fly direct to Hong Kong. United has seized the gauntlet there, debuting direct flights to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City via Hong Kong, as well as adding a nonstop Sapporo service to its Japan schedules.

Slot capacity is an issue elsewhere too. Kirby indicated United could tackle the problem at New York JFK by acquiring slots from smaller carriers with low margins or unprofitable operations. United has already proposed an effective merger with Delta and seen it snubbed, but a partnership with JetBlue is slated for 2027. “We got a bunch of irons in the fire to try to find ways to do it,” Kirby told CNBC.

Another of those irons is the airline’s approach to AI, which Kirby says he aims to deploy to minimise weather disruption, maximise efficiency, ease passengers’ travel experience, and boost reliability. The latter is a focus since United currently ranks lower than Delta and Alaska Airlines for on-time arrivals, according to US Department of Transportation data.

Seeking assistance, his travel companion eventually reached Badwater Road, where he was able to get help from a passing motorist who took him to the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. Once he reached the centre around 2:00 pm, National Park Service rangers and an Inyo County deputy immediately started a search and rescue operation, assisted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter.

Later that same afternoon, Pierre Michel Formosa was found 1.5 miles from Badwater Road. Sadly, all help came too late, and the Frenchman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Inyo County coroner has been commissioned to determine the cause and manner of death.

“Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the visitor who died. This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous. Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances, and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience. We’re grateful to everyone who took part in the search, and our thoughts are with his loved ones,” stated Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds.

Death Valley National Park, established in 1916, is located on the California–Nevada border. The park is known for its very particular climate and is the hottest, driest, and lowest of all the national parks in the United States, often beating its own records in terms of extreme weather.

Moreover, due to its remote nature, cell service is limited or nonexistent in large parts of the park, and emergency help can be hours away. All visitors are thus urged to be well-prepared when visiting the area. The Death Valley National Park Service advises the following:

• Plan your route in advance and check current road and weather conditions.
• Tell someone your plans — where you’re going and when you expect to return.
• Carry ample water and supplies. The park recommends at least one gallon of water per person, per day, plus extra for vehicle emergencies.
• Match your vehicle to the road. Many backcountry roads require high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles, and conditions can change without warning.
• Bring a way to call for help where cell service may not reach, such as a satellite communicator or emergency beacon.
• If your vehicle becomes disabled, staying with it is often the safest choice. It provides shade and shelter, and it’s far easier for search teams to spot than a person on foot in open terrain.
• During periods of extreme heat, visitors are encouraged to stay on paved roads and avoid hiking at lower elevations.
