On 5 August 2026, the American Federation of Government Employees has filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the TSA. The union is calling on the Freedom of Information Act to ask the TSA to disclose “documents related to a TSA airport checkpoint privatisation program called GoldPlus or Gold+.”

According to the lawsuit, the administration has been secretively pushing to expand the privatisation of airport security screening functions. While the TSA has been marketing GoldPlus to airports since at least August of 2025, the union only learned about its existence through a TSA-branded briefing flier found at Orlando International Airport.

The privatisation plan was never formally disclosed to the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). After the discovery of the flyer in April 2026, the union filed a filed a FOIA request on 11 May 2026 in order to obtain documents pertinent to the roll-out of Gold+, a demand that hasn’t been met up until the time of writing.

“To date, TSA has failed to make a determination on Plaintiff’s FOIA request, to disclose any of the requested documents within the time stipulated under FOIA, or to provide any date when such documents will be disclosed,” the AFGE writes in the document.

Although TSA workers are traditionally in charge of security screenings at airports across the United States, the Transportation Security Administration and airports (some 20 airports at the time of writing) are increasingly making use of privatised screening as part of the Screening Partnership Program (SPP). Privately-owned third-party contractors are being given the chance to manage both the screening workforce and technology in a process overseen by the federal agency.

TSA Gold+, which is set to be adopted by Charleston International Airport, Tampa International Airport, and Des Moines International Airport in 2027, is being marketed as the next step in the private-public partnership. According to the TSA, it encourages private investment, while accelerating technological innovation and enhancing the passenger experience. The Administration also said the highest level of security would apply, while security screenings would be less prone to disturbances linked to federal budget uncertainty.

However, the American Federation of Government Employees sees things differently. The union is concerned by the impact of the measure on the TSA workforce, on security, and on privacy.

“TSA has been keeping everyone in the dark about its privatization plans – TSA employees, members of Congress, airport authorities, and the flying public. And it’s little wonder why – this privatisation expansion is a major departure from the aviation security system established by Congress in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Changes of this magnitude must not be made in the dark”, AFGE National President Everett Kelley said in a press release.

Moreover, AFGE General Counsel Rushab Sanghv warns that (partially) privatising the industry might have a negative influence on pay and benefits. Staffing would be the biggest expense of the private security screening firms, with cost cuts looming around the corner.

“We continue to push to make sure that our airports are safe and that our federal employees, our TSOs – the people who work at TSA at the airport, many of whom are veterans – are treated with respect, and they’re not replaced with poorly paid jobs that are going to impair public safety,” Sanghvi told USA Today.

At the time of writing, the TSA has not yet reacted to the formal request of the American Federation of Government Employees.

One of the most unusual examples is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The smartphone has been banned from all flights since 2016 because of serious problems with its lithium-ion battery. The battery could overheat, catch fire, or explode, creating a serious safety risk on board an aircraft.

Why is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 banned?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was recalled after reports of batteries overheating, catching fire, and exploding. The problems were linked to physical flaws that could cause the battery to short-circuit. The TSA subsequently banned the phone from flights in October 2016, and the restriction remains in place.

Passengers are not allowed to pack the Galaxy Note 7 in either their carry-on or checked luggage. The exact civil penalty for bringing a prohibited item through security can depend on the circumstances, but the maximum penalty is $17,062 (€14,779). The ban is therefore more serious than the restrictions placed on most electronic devices.

The rules around lithium batteries also apply to other travel items. Spare lithium batteries, including power banks and phone chargers, are prohibited in checked luggage. They must instead be carried in the cabin because of the potential risk of overheating, smoke or fire.

Not every liquid is limited to 100 ml

The 3.4-ounce, or 100 ml, rule is one of the best-known airport security restrictions in the US. It applies to liquids, gels and aerosols carried through the security checkpoint. However, there are important exceptions that travellers should know about.

Breast milk, infant formula, toddler drinks and baby or toddler food can be taken through security in carry-on luggage even when they exceed the usual limit. These products are treated as medically necessary liquids, while ice packs used to keep them cold can also be allowed.

Travellers should tell the TSA officer about these liquids before screening. They should also remove them from their carry-on bag so they can be screened separately. Keeping these items easy to access can make the screening process simpler.

Check the rules before packing

The main issue for travellers is that an item is not always simply allowed or banned. Some objects are permitted in checked luggage but not in carry-on bags, while other items must stay in the cabin. Batteries are a particularly important example because of the risk of overheating and fire.

Hailed as “the most epic chip-building effort in the world,” the facility will be built in Grimes County, Texas. Vast in ambition and size, the “vertically integrated factory” will provide over nine million square metres of manufacturing space and host manufacturing, packaging, and testing processes.

Bringing these aspects together in one location will, the press release claimed, allow rapid improvements and deployment of chips optimized for products such as Tesla’s Optimus robots and “self-driving” Cybercabs, alongside those headed for SpaceX’s data centres in space.

The facility is required because, combined, SpaceX and Tesla are projected to require in excess of one terawatt (TW) of processing capacity or “compute,” which outstrips current global supply. At the same time as announcing the move, Musk explained “this looming gulf between supply and demand is at the core of Terafab’s necessity” and expressed appreciation for his current chip suppliers, encouraging them “to expand production whenever possible.”

Advanced chips are argued to be more and more essential to today’s economy, as AI systems, satellites, secure communications, and advanced manufacturing all rely on them. Musk’s press release notes that “much of the world’s semiconductor production remains concentrated overseas, and the United States has recognized the importance of rebuilding advanced manufacturing capacity domestically. Terafab aligns with that broader national effort by expanding high-end manufacturing capacity in Texas.”

Grimes is located in southeastern Texas, a place where historically, slave ownership was high, lynchings were common, and the population declined during the 20th century, when the county remained rural and agricultural. The facility will be built in the Gibbons Creek Reservoir area, on the former site of a steam electricity station. AI-produced renderings reveal two symmetrical U-shaped buildings ending in wing-like roofs, with a service road through the middle.

The confirmation of the plans on 6 August 2026 came two months after Grimes County lawmakers agreed a full property tax abatement package and €30 million state grant to secure trillionaire Musk’s investment. That is reported to represent an estimated $55 billion (over €47.6 billion) initially,  and could reach more than twice that. Some predict the factory will employ between 1,800 and 3,000 people.

But critics say those jobs are unlikely to be filled by local hires, and the project, and its wider sector, bring major sustainability challenges. There are growing environmental concerns about how resource-intensive semi-conductor chip manufacturing is, relying on massive amounts of ultrapure water, fossil-fuel-generated energy to power tools and climate and humidity control, as well as processes that involve fluorinated greenhouse gases, like nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), which has a global warming potential 17,000 times greater than CO₂.

According to a paper published at 2021’s IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture, the semiconductor manufacturing sector alone is responsible for around 50 megatons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Business owners in Anderson, 10 minutes from the Gibbons Creek site, expressed fear about telling news station ABC13 Houston their true feelings about the project, saying their opinions would drive customers away. During the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition in July, Fathertime Bourbon was able to obtain international recognition. The Caboose Small Batch: Empty Nester Strength secured the title of Best New Bourbon, earning no less than 97 points and earning a Double Gold Medal. The jury particularly liked the bourbon’s nose of matcha tea, ginger, cookies, and lemon peel, with flavours including dried fig and bubble gum.

The proposed resort, developed by Eli Applebaum through Kulik River Capital, will transform a plot that has remained largely unchanged for more than a decade after the collapse of the SkyVue observation wheel project. Clark County’s Zoning Commission unanimously approved the plans on 22 July, clearing a key hurdle for the development. 

The proposed resort would feature a 29-storey hotel with approximately 752 guest rooms, a casino, more than 42,000 square feet of convention space, restaurants, retail outlets, a resort pool and a pedestrian entertainment plaza inspired by downtown Las Vegas’ Fremont Street Experience. Its most distinctive feature, however, is a giant heart-shaped opening in the middle of the tower, while the exterior would be wrapped in LED screens designed to display animated content. 

Developers plan to incorporate the unfinished SkyVue concrete columns into the resort’s design, transforming them into a restaurant suspended about 265 feet (81 metres) above the ground. The structure has become one of the Strip’s most recognisable eyesores since construction on the more than $100 million Ferris wheel project stalled because of financial difficulties in the early 2010s.

The proposal underwent significant revisions before receiving approval. According to project representatives, the building’s height was reduced by around 60 feet (18 metres) to satisfy Federal Aviation Administration requirements because of its proximity to Harry Reid International Airport. The reduction also lowered the planned number of hotel rooms. 

The unconventional heart-shaped design has sparked a wave of online ridicule after Clark County approved plans, with many social media users dubbing the design “ugly” and “tacky” and questioning whether it will ever be built. Commenters mocked the oversized heart and LED-covered façade, with some describing the renderings as “atrociously tacky” and comparing the design to an oversized Valentine’s Day decoration.

Others questioned whether the project would ever leave the drawing board. On Reddit, one user wrote: “Things that won’t actually get built and/or look anything like the pic for $100,” while another commented, “Some consultancy got paid millions of dollars to design that concept.” 

Not everyone was critical, however. Several users welcomed the return of bold, themed architecture after years of increasingly conventional hotel towers. “I love the cheesy Vegas vibes. But guess I’m the minority,” one commenter wrote, while another argued that “theme hotels are making a comeback” after the city had become dominated by generic glass skyscrapers.

The redevelopment comes at a challenging time for Las Vegas tourism. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, visitor numbers fell 7.5% to around 38.5 million in 2025, with rising travel costs, international travel hurdles and growing competition from online gambling contributing to the decline. 

If completed, the project would add another highly recognisable landmark to the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip at a time when the city is looking to refresh ageing sites and attract visitors with new entertainment concepts.

Trump revealed the plans by commenting that Dulles is “considered one of the worst airports anywhere in the world” but went on to claim, “we’re going to make it maybe the best with some hard work.” The President said the time had come “for a ​major and long overdue renovation and reconstruction of Washington’s really horribly-thought of Dulles.”

The investment comes amid data showing Dulles was the fastest-growing large U.S. airport ​last year by passenger traffic, handling 29 million total passengers, an increase of 6.4%, in 2025.

The airport renovation also forms part of Trump’s wider ambitions to leave his mark on the wider capital region, and has been described by Duffy as the “cherry on top” of Trump’s plan to “make DC safe and beautiful.” The President is reported by the Washington Post as having spent months looking at pitches and said himself he had considered more than 30 proposals.

That wider Washington plan has entailed multiple Oval Office construction and renovation proposals, such as those for the Oval Office itself, which has been gilded; a new life for the White House Rose Garden, new sidewalks for Lafayette Square, a new visitors’ complex, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, a triumphal arch, and the National Garden of American Heroes.

But Trump’s apparently Washington-centric policy is not popular among the electorate, with 58% expressing dissatisfaction or anger about the building projects, a recent CNN poll found. A record 73% of US adults accuse Trump of neglecting the country’s most important problems.

Meanwhile, with the airport works funded through private finance, flyers and aviation stakeholders have also questioned what the cost of the Dulles renovations, which are slated to take place over the coming eight years, will do to the cost of air tickets, which remain elevated after the Middle East security crisis and its effect on fuel prices.

All were created by design studios Softlab and Moment Factory to engage visitors in every season and in all weather conditions, with a journey that evolves throughout the day.

One of the most impressive installations is Kaleidoscope, made by Moment Factory and said to be the largest kaleidoscope in New York City. During their visit, art enthusiasts are immersed in a continuously changing sensation of light, color, sound, and reflection.

According to travel booking data cited by The Independent, hotel searches in Miami by UK travellers jumped significantly after England’s dramatic victory over Mexico confirmed its next clash against Norway. 

The spike marks a sharp turnaround for Miami’s hospitality sector, which had experienced slower-than-expected bookings earlier in the tournament despite hosting several World Cup matches. Industry analysts had previously warned that hotel demand across many US host cities was falling short of expectations, but interest has accelerated as the quarter-final stages have drawn fans to high-profile matches.

Accommodation prices have also climbed as demand has increased. Hotels close to the stadium and in popular areas such as Miami Beach have seen availability tighten, while many supporters have turned to short-term rentals as an alternative. Earlier industry data had already shown that demand for holiday rentals in South Florida was strengthening around major World Cup matches, with booking levels rising sharply compared with the same period last year. 

The growing interest in England’s quarter-final has been reflected in accommodation searches across major booking platforms. Booking.com said searches by UK travellers for Miami stays between 10 and 12 July, made between 4 and 7 July, were up 403%. Expedia.co.uk also reported a 300% increase in lodging searches between 5 and 8 July compared with the same dates last year. Demand for short-term rentals has also risen, with AirDNA reporting a 15% year-on-year increase ahead of the knockout stages.

The match has attracted additional attention after Norway’s preparations were disrupted by an unexpected hotel change. The Scandinavian side relocated after just one night at their original accommodation in Fort Lauderdale, following complaints from players about traffic noise and nearby construction work.

“It is brutal having to move but we are satisfied with the new place and everyone is happy now. Some people might fear that this will affect the players, but it was the players who wanted this more than anyone else,” said Truls Daehli, the Norway team’s logistics manager. 

“We have strong people in our support team and managed to move in two-and-a-half hours. The process of changing hotel is not ideal but we wanted to take action as soon as possible. Having a good atmosphere is most important.”

On the pitch, England head into the quarter-final aiming to extend their unbeaten run under Thomas Tuchel, while Norway arrive full of confidence after a remarkable tournament run that has already included a shock victory over Brazil. Leading the charge is Erling Haaland, who has been one of the stars of the competition with seven goals, placing him among the World Cup’s top scorers alongside Lionel Messi (eight goals) and Kylian Mbappé (seven). Just behind him is England captain Harry Kane, who has claimed six goals and will now face his fellow striker in one of the tournament’s most anticipated battles.

The history of the White Pass & Yukon Route dates back to 1898. During the Klondike Gold Rush, the 177-kilometre narrow-gauge route heading from Skagway in Alaska through British Columbia to Canada’s Yukon Territory was built by no less than 35,000 workers, through rugged and hard-to-reach terrain.

“Building the one hundred and ten miles of track was a challenge in every way. Construction required cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, building two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles. Work on the tunnel at Mile 16 took place in the dead of winter, with heavy snow and temperatures as low as 60 below slowing the work. The workers reached the Summit of White Pass on February 20, 1899, and by July 6, 1899, construction reached Lake Bennett and the beginning of the river and lakes route,” the White Pass & Yukon Route explains on its website.

In 2026, the railway was not just recognised as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark; it was also named as one of North America’s most beautiful train journeys in an eye-tracking study by travel insurance company InsureandGo. And, luckily for those who will be visiting North America over the coming months and are still looking for a unique experience, the White Pass & Yukon Route has reopened for the Summer season.

Travellers who are looking to embark on the journey can do so through several different experiences. The most popular is the so-called White Pass Summit Excursion, which starts in Skagway and takes passengers to the White Pass Summit, located at an elevation of 2,888 feet (880 metres). The entire round trip spans over 40 miles (64 kilometres), costs $155 (€135) per person and takes approximately 2.5 hours. Journeys are available until 7 October 2026.

“Relax in vintage passenger coaches as you retrace the original route to the White Pass Summit, passing Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point and Dead Horse Gulch. Enjoy a breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites. See the original Klondike Trail of ‘98 worn into the rocks, a permanent tribute to the thousands of souls who passed this way in search of fortune,” the White Pass & Yukon Route writes.

At the time of writing, the longest available train journey on the White Pass & Yukon Route is the Bennett Scenic Journey, taking travellers from Skagway all the way to Carcross. The 120 miles (193 kilometres) round trip takes eight hours to complete and includes a 45-minute layover in scenic Bennett, a town only accessible via the White Pass train or by hiking the famous Chilkoot Trail. The trip is bookable until 12 September 2026 and costs $289 (€253) per person.

Other routes, including one-way trips and hiker services, can be found through the White Pass & Yukon Route.

The Fourth of July weekend is traditionally one of the busiest of the year across airports in the United States. Millions of people are going on holiday or visiting family, which can lead to crowded departure halls and long queues at the luggage check-in.

In order to decrease the luggage friction as much as possible and to make travelling a little less stressful, for the Fourth of July 2026, United Airlines introduced its new Twilight Bag Drop scheme at its hub, O’Hare International Airport. Although tests had been running for months beforehand, the busy travel weekend was the ideal occasion for a hard launch.

“Fly through the airport in the morning without stressing about bag drop, just head straight to security,” United Airlines said in an email to eligible customers seen by USA Today Travel.

Thanks to the Twilight Bag Drop, United Airlines passengers travelling from O’Hare International Airport with a flight scheduled between 5:00 am and 9:00 am can drop their checked bags the night before. Drop-offs can be made between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm outside Terminal 1 by door 1Da on the departures level.

Although the service is free for all eligible passengers, travellers still need to complete the online check-in beforehand, through the United Airlines app or website. During the drop-off, customers will be asked for ID, after which the staff will tag the luggage and send it for sorting and screening. On the morning of the departure, the check-in and bag drop process is thus avoided.

Although the launch of the service at O’Hare International Airport is being widely shared, it is not the only United Airlines hub to offer the service. Passengers travelling from Guam (GUM) can also use the scheme, although the timetable slightly varies.

“If your flight leaves Guam before 9:30 am, you can check bags the night before, between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Food that can go bad should still go through regular check-in,” United specifies on its website.

It is yet unclear whether or not United Airlines plans on introducing the service at other hubs as well, if the launch goes as expected. However, according to travel outlet Live And Let’s Fly, the airline is also working on a Home Bag Pick-Up service. Reportedly, some passengers in eligible locations have already been offered a free trial, which means their luggage is being picked up at their homes before their flight.

For travellers, such a Home Bag Pick-Up service would be a great addition to United Airlines’ offer. Not only would it allow them to avoid lugging around heavy bags, but it would also greatly diminish the need to arrive (very) early at the airport in order to check in their bags. For the airline, however, the logistics of such an operation could prove to be quite complicated.
