The Visa Bond Pilot Program was introduced by the US government and originally applied to travellers from 50 countries. These countries were classified as higher risk for visa overstays or security concerns. Under the programme, travellers applying for tourist or business visas could be required to pay a bond of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 per person, depending on individual circumstances. This system also applied to the visa types used by many fans travelling for the World Cup. The bond was refundable after departure from the United States, provided visa conditions were respected. Five World Cup-qualified countries were included in the scheme: Algeria, Cape Verde, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Tunisia.

The airline lowered its 2026 profit forecast earlier this year because of higher jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions, though it said travel demand remained resilient heading into the summer season.

Across Europe and North America, airlines and airports are already facing concerns over delays, congestion and schedule disruptions during the busy travel period.

American cities hosting matches can expect some welcome growth in the leisure and hospitality sector, but it will be short-lived, warns Oxford Economics.

The global economic forecasting and consultancy firm reports that all 11 US host cities will experience above-average GDP growth in these sectors. However, the overall effect is expected to be modest for two main reasons: little new infrastructure has been built for the event and much of the World Cup tourism is likely to “displace existing tourism” rather than generate new demand.

The situation varies sharply from city to city. Smaller metropolitan areas stand to benefit most in terms of job creation, with Kansas City, San Jose, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles forecast to see the strongest gains. Established tourism hubs such as New York, Miami, and Seattle are expected to see only minimal employment growth as they already attract large numbers of international visitors throughout the year.

GDP gains differ slightly, with Houston, New York, San Jose, Seattle and Dallas set to see the biggest increase.

In March 2025, the World Economic Forum (WEF) cited a study which projected up to $40.9 billion in global GDP and the creation of 824,000 full-time jobs worldwide, with an estimated impact of $594 million from eight matches in Los Angeles County alone.

However, these figures seemed high from the outset and were produced in a very different geopolitical and economic climate.

The warning signs are already visible. International visitor spending fell by 2% in 2025, with spending by Canadians contracting by 20%. Seattle is particularly vulnerable in this respect, as almost two thirds of its inbound demand comes from Canadian visitors, whose numbers have dropped by 33%, with little recovery expected.

History also suggests that modest expectations are warranted. Of the nine cities that hosted matches in the 1994 tournament hosted by the US, only Boston, San Jose, Washington and New York experienced meaningful growth in leisure and hospitality jobs that year. Most cities recorded similar or higher growth in 1995, suggesting that the gains were due as much to the strong economy as to the tournament itself. 

Crucially, just as this summer, no new stadiums or infrastructure were built in 1994, unlike in subsequent tournaments in Germany, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar, where heavy investment in stadiums and transport also created more jobs.

However, as Oxford Economics notes, jobs created for such major events are mostly temporary and barely register in annual figures.

Demand is rising unevenly across the three host nations, with Mexico currently experiencing the sharpest increase in interest and Canada recording steadier growth. Cities such as Boston, Mexico City, and Vancouver are attracting the strongest increases in travel searches and bookings.

However, air connectivity, domestic tourism flows, hotel capacity, and local mobility will determine the true economic “winners” from the tournament.

Construction on the bridge began on Earth Day in 2022, with an expected cost of roughly $90 million. Officials originally hoped to complete the project by 2025, but severe rain and flooding over consecutive years delayed the timeline. 

The wildlife crossing includes two connected bridge structures: a 43,500-square-foot span over the 101 Freeway and a 12,425-square-foot bridge over Agoura Road. Together, the 55,925-square-foot project became the largest wildlife bridge of its kind in the world. 

“We have been studying wildlife, including bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions, in the park and in the Liberty Canyon area for more than 25 years now, and we have documented the major barrier effects of the freeway, in terms of movement and gene flow. But it is incredibly exciting to see this research turn into conservation action,” said Seth Riley, the wildlife branch chief of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Thousands of native plants are being installed across the structure to recreate the surrounding ecosystem and encourage animals to use the passage naturally. The bridge also includes sound walls and specially designed barriers intended to reduce noise and light from the freeway below. 

More than 50 cameras will eventually monitor the wildlife crossing and surrounding areas, capturing animals as they move through the corridor. Jeff Sikich of the National Park Service said researchers have already completed a two-year study tracking five key species before the bridge opens and will conduct follow-up research afterwards to measure its impact on wildlife movement and population numbers.

The project has become closely associated with the story of P-22, the famed mountain lion that became a symbol of wildlife isolation in Los Angeles after crossing multiple freeways and living for years in Griffith Park. P-22 lived to an estimated 12 years old, longer than most wild male mountain lions. In 2022, biologists found him suffering from severe injuries and illnesses, including kidney failure, head trauma and injuries from a car strike, leading to the difficult decision to humanely euthanise him.

Beth Pratt, California regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation and one of the project’s leading advocates, told The Guardian: “Ensuring that wildlife remain on our landscapes into the future across the Golden State requires that we address the devastation that freeways and roadways have caused to ecosystems, fragmenting them into islands that threaten wildlife large and small with extinction.”

Despite widespread support from environmental organisations and state officials, the crossing has also faced criticism over rising costs and delays. Some conservative commentators and political critics have labelled the project as a ‘bridge to nowhere’, while supporters argue it could become a global model for urban wildlife conservation. 

The project is being praised as part of the state’s broader infrastructure and climate agenda, with officials saying the crossing will help protect both wildlife and the hundreds of thousands of drivers who use the freeway each day.

They should be cautious, however, about too much of an air fare bonanza, said Ahmed Abdelghany, associate dean for research and professor of operations management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, who warned that by providing “the lowest price point in the market” Spirit had been “helping the consumer and forcing other airlines in many markets to match that low fare in some of their booking classes.” With that reference point gone, some consumers may be priced out of the game, which means everyone loses out.

In terms of fleet capacity, meanwhile, some airlines have been struggling to grow due to well-documented supply chain delays in aircraft manufacturing. Cirium data shows that Spirit had 172 planes on its last day of operations. Though 124 of those were leased and will go straight back to their owners, the others could in theory be up for grabs. Still, a sales process governed by bankruptcy proceedings is slow, so unlikely to provide an immediate glut of planes.

Workers on the other hand, are not subject necessarily to the same sales conditions for their labour, meaning some if not all of Spirit’s reported 17,000 employees could be snapped up by competitors looking to grow, especially because post-COVID-19 staffing in aviation has been a notorious problem.

Neither is the bankruptcy turnaround delay applicable when it comes to satisfying customer demand in the marketplace. Just two days after Spirit’s closure, JetBlue announced nearly a dozen new routes out of Fort Lauderdale, Spirit’s former Florida base.

“We’re stepping up for Fort Lauderdale to ensure the availability of air service in this market,” Marty St. George, JetBlue’s president, said in a statement. “Our focus is simple: Make it easier for customers to stay connected with the people and places that matter, while delivering the service, comfort and value they expect from JetBlue.” JetBlue, which has not been without its own financial woes, shores up its own position with the move—making it more likely to secure a rescue deal of its own should it be required in the future, Mann said.

Destination managers at the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority are now heavily promoting a scheme that has been in place for five years, encouraging visitors to support local communities and conservation actions during their stay. 

Known as the “Mālama Hawaiʻi” programme, the initiative brings together “opportunities for visitors to pay it forward, like beach clean-ups, native tree planting, and more,” the GoHawai‘i website says, urging guests to “Engage in some of our volunteer opportunities … and in exchange, experience Hawaiʻi on a much deeper and connected level.” The scheme comes amid much soul-searching among stakeholders and lovers of Hawaiʻi after a devastating wildfire in 2023 and years of what some claimed was overdevelopment and a lack of care towards native and resident islanders. Lawmakers have since raised tourist accommodation and cruise taxes to raise funds to tackle the effects of climate change and tourism.

Mālama means “to give back” and the website allows holidaymakers to browse a range of volunteering tasks, filtering them by dates, activity type, and cause, as well as the sort of person who will be undertaking the good deed (e.g. kids or couples) and their own aims (e.g. meeting people or getting exercise). At the time of writing there were 697 activities to choose from on Maui, 341 on Kauaʻi, 203 on Oʻahu, and 152 on Hawaiʻi.

Activities are wide-ranging, and vary from catering to physical labour to office work. They include teaching people, helping animals, restoring trails, and assisting with farms. The programme has been hailed by Caroline Anderson, interim CEO and president of Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, speaking to Travel + Leisure, as a way to make it “easy for visitors to participate in enriching volunteer experiences, many of which you can only find in Hawai‘i.”

While some of the tasks might be unique to the islands, the concept of inviting holidaymakers to contribute their time and energy to sustainable causes is not. Other destinations have also been leading the way with responsible tourism and responding to consumer demand for authentic experiences and community involvement. British Airways has published an unusual job offer concerning taxi pilots who would be based in Chicago O’Hare, one of the world’s busiest airports, with over 70 million annual passengers. While at most airports, taxiing is done by the regular flight pilot, Chicago O’Hare comes with a very specific list of taxi obstacles for British Airways.

One of the major reasons why British Airways is looking for dedicated taxi personnel at Chicago O’Hare is, without a doubt, the fact that arrivals and departures take place at two different terminals. While the carrier’s flights arrive at Terminal 5, home to the airport’s Customs and Border Patrol, departing flights leave from Terminal 3 following the Atlantic Joint Business Agreement with American Airlines.

Secondly, pushback tug vehicles are not a common sight at Chicago O’Hare. Airplanes thus use their own engines to get from one terminal to the other, yet with aircraft as large as the Boeing 777 and 787 used by British Airways, this is no easy task. Moreover, fuel consumption can run high, even while taxiing, and especially given the current fuel crisis, efficiency is therefore key.

Last but not least, for its transatlantic flights to Chicago O’Hare, British Airways is often faced with a legal problem. Given the duration of the journey, the flight crew often spent nearly 12 hours on duty upon arrival. Especially when a flight is delayed, having to taxi between terminals could mean that the flight crew has to surpass the legal working time limit.

The offer

Those who want to apply for the position will have to fulfil a list of requirements. Candidates must be in the possession of a valid Air Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate or equivalent and should have experience handling Boeing 777 or 787 aircraft or similar long-haul planes. Aside from the salary, the shift-based role also includes a number of employment benefits.

“Currently, British Airways has an exciting opportunity open for ground taxi pilots. This position will be based in Chicago (ORD). The base salary range for this position is $90,000 – $100,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting,” the job description explains.

On 16 March 2026, British Airways announced it would be expanding its long-haul route network by 9% by the winter of 2026. That expansion includes an increased service from its key U.S. destinations – including Baltimore, Houston, and New Orleans – as well as two new long-haul destinations alongside additional flights from several U.S. cities.

While the firm has told its customers they should receive refunds for flights already booked and paid for, which will now not take place, customer service operations have stopped, meaning there will be no assistance for those who need to make other travel plans. Customers have been told not to travel to air hubs for now non-existent flights, and to check information online instead.

Although the situation could cause a rush on tickets and inflate fares, other airlines are reportedly stepping to the brink. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has issued a statement telling consumers that competitor airlines are making tickets available at capped prices “specifically for Spirit customers who now need to rebook cancelled flights.”

Affected passengers will be asked to provide their Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment to benefit from the capped fares. Duffy told the X community: “For any consumers worried about higher prices, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are offering reduced fares on high-volume Spirit routes. Allegiant has also committed to freezing fare prices across routes that overlap with Spirit. To support impacted travellers, Frontier is offering up to 50% off base fares across its network until May 10.”

Travellers can embark on one of the vehicles in the dedicated loading area after completing their security screening. After receiving instructions on how to use the autonomous wheelchairs, they can still opt for a traditional wheelchair service if they wish to do so.

At Alaska’s Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, NANA Management Services (NMS) and Alaska Airlines teamed up with WHILL Autonomous Service to introduce an autonomous mobility assistance program for the first time at the airport. With the support of trained NMS staff, passengers will be able to easily navigate the airport independently.

“Anchorage represents an important step in expanding access to autonomous mobility in North America. Our goal is to give passengers more independence and confidence as they move through the airport, while also helping our partners deliver more consistent and reliable service, especially during peak travel periods,” stated Shane Bogni, President, WHILL Autonomous Service, North America & EMEA.

According to information provided by WHILL, Alaska Airlines passengers at the airport will be able to book the service after completing multiple steps.

1. Request wheelchair assistance through Alaska Airlines at the time of booking, prior to arrival, or upon entering the terminal.
2. Visit an NMS assistance kiosk in the terminal, where NMS team members will coordinate wheelchair services.
3. Eligibility screening. On site, NMS staff will screen passengers to confirm they meet the mobility requirements for use of the autonomous devices.
4. TSA support and transition. Passengers will be assisted through the TSA screening process and then transferred to a WHILL autonomous wheelchair.
5. Guidance and education. NMS agents will provide instruction so passengers can use the technology safely and confidently.

Ted Stevens marks the sixth U.S. airport to deploy WHILL autonomous wheelchairs. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, Detroit Metro Airport, and Miami International Airport already rolled out their vehicles.
