The model covers all five of New York’s boroughs, as well as parts of New Jersey and Long Island. Visitors can look for the Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium and the Brooklyn Bridge among its streets. It measures about 15 metres long and just over eight metres wide, with more than 340 sections fitted together to form the city. The museum provides binoculars so visitors can examine buildings that are difficult to see from the edge of the display.

Anyone searching for a precise picture of present-day New York may notice something unusual. In Queens, Macken included a diner he remembered from childhood, although a newer building now stands on the site. He also kept the old Kosciuszko Bridge, which was replaced in 2017. In Lower Manhattan, the Twin Towers stand beside One World Trade Center, built after the attacks of 11 September 2001. “I kept a lot of my own parts of the city,” said Macken. The model shows places as he remembers them alongside places visitors would recognise today.

The idea began when Macken was a child. On a school trip to the Queens Museum, he saw its Panorama of the City of New York, another large model of the city. He did not begin his own version until he was in his 40s, after moving with his family from Long Island to the Albany area of New York state. Macken told the Associated Press that he thought he might have missed the city. He started with the tower at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, a landmark in Midtown Manhattan.

Making Midtown alone took around ten years. The Empire State Building was especially difficult because Macken wanted to get the detail of its tower right. He had no formal training in architecture, design or model making, and used materials such as balsa wood and cardboard. The project followed him beyond his worktable: he took supplies on family holidays and built during breaks from his weekend bus-driving job. As he gained experience, he found he could make buildings far more quickly than when he started.

For years, the model remained a project at home. When Macken finished it, his daughter persuaded him to share videos of it on TikTok. According to the Associated Press, those videos attracted more than 10 million views in one week, and the museum contacted him after seeing them. The exhibition opened in February 2026, bringing his handmade New York before visitors in New York for the first time. Macken has said that he enjoyed building it so much that he had never spent much time thinking about finishing it.

At the museum, visitors have been looking for more than famous sights. Some search for streets and neighbourhoods they once knew, using the model to follow their own memories across the city. One visitor, Jonathan Skolnik, pointed out places connected to his family, including his father’s first address in America and the neighbourhood in Queens where Skolnik was born. Macken is already thinking about additions of his own. He hopes to add more than 50 buildings and extend the model further into New Jersey and Long Island.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the administration intends to ask Congress for a further $30 billion (over €26 billion) for air traffic control and airport upgrades. The proposal would allocate about $10 billion to ageing towers and facilities, $10 billion to telecommunications and other control technology, and $10 billion to airport infrastructure, Reuters reported.

The announcement came a day after a telecommunications outage disrupted traffic around New York and Philadelphia. Simple Flying reported that roughly 9,500 US flights were delayed or cancelled and more than 100 were diverted, with Newark, New York JFK, LaGuardia, and Philadelphia among the airports affected. Newark alone recorded more than 600 cancellations.

The disruption reportedly began with a primary circuit failure at Philadelphia TRACON, which manages traffic in the region. When controllers moved to a backup connection, a fibre-optic cable in New Jersey had also been severed during construction. Communications were restored after about eight hours, but the knock-on effects continued across airline networks.

The latest request is additional to the $12.5 billion approved by Congress in 2025 for the Federal Aviation Administration’s modernisation programme. Of that earlier package, $9 billion was directed to systems and $3.5 billion to facilities. If the new bid succeeds, combined federal investment in air traffic control and airport renewal would reach about $42.5 billion.

Plans include replacing copper telecommunications lines, radios, radars, and voice switches, while expanding digital surveillance and information displays. The FAA has also started limited use of SMART, a software platform drawing on around 200 data streams to anticipate congestion, weather effects, and capacity constraints. Administrator Bryan Bedford said the platform, combined with hardware upgrades, could help reduce delays and keep US airspace safe and available.

However, the eventual price remains uncertain. A government review cited by media sources found that the FAA lacks a comprehensive estimate for the programme’s full lifecycle cost. Telecommunications spending has already risen from $4.75 billion to $5.91 billion, while a second phase of systems work is estimated at a further $10.2 billion, excluding facilities.

For travellers, the episode demonstrates how one damaged link can ripple through several major hubs and continue affecting schedules after repairs are completed. Prohibited from overflying Russia, US airlines have been forced to re-route, flying longer distances and consuming extra fuel at a time when Middle East oil prices and high operational costs already put them at a disadvantage. It’s a starkly different business proposition compared to those who benefit from “shorter, less costly, and more economical routings on ​flights to ⁠and from China and the United States,” they said.

Following calls for an outright US ban on Chinese airlines, the US Department of Transportation (DoT), eventually imposed a 50-roundtrip limit on airlines on both sides as a result of the tensions. But now, the A4A points out, the additional two flights requested by Air China to both New York and Washington DC during the weeks of Jinping’s visit, would risk breaching those bilateral rules that should constrain them to 50 return flights per week. 

The A4A has urged officials not to comply with the latest request. It also demanded that, if approved, the extra Chinese flights should be classified as charter flights, in line with their ad-hoc nature. If they were classed as scheduled operations, the trade body says, it could create a regulatory loophole that could mean their rivals can continue to fly beyond the 50-flight cap in the future.

Chinese airlines have already taken advantage of the geopolitical situation to grow international connectivity and schedules, boosting their market share on international routes that enjoy high demand and where overflying Russia gives them an edge over the suite of other carriers, like American, Delta, and United, who cannot. Air China currently already flies five flights a week between Beijing and New York and Washington. Meanwhile, China Eastern Airlines flies Shanghai to New York; China Southern flies Guangzhou to New York; and XiamenAir flies Fuzhou  to New York.

Whether or not the extra flights are permitted, Trump and Jinping are expected, among other things, to discuss the risks posed by AI amid calls for cooperation and information sharing regarding AI incidents that could have national security implications. Those talks come at a time when the US has just begun rolling out its latest AI SMART system for air traffic control.

After weeks of clearing and damage repair, however, the consequences of the lack of tourists is becoming increasingly clear. Business owners are forced to let go most of their work force due to a lack of footfall, a situation that could quickly escalate and destabilise the island’s entire community.

In an article for The Associated Press, Gabriela Aoun Angueira interviews multiple small business owners about the consequences of the hurricane and the associated lack of tourists on their situation.

“Now that power and water is being restored, we should start to switch the narrative before many of us go out of business. People are canceling their trips in November,” warned Kelly Kakalia, co-owner of The Musubi Truck.

While some regions on the island are still considered a no-go zone as the damage done by Hurricane Lowell remains great, many other parts of Kauaʻi are slowly recovering and are ready to reopen their doors to sympathetic tourists. 

“We are still recovering from Hurricane Lowell, so come with patience. Some parks and areas remain closed, and we are telling visitors to avoid areas like Wainiha and Hāʻena for now. Check with your accommodations and activity providers before you arrive. The best way to help is to spend local. Eat, shop, and book with our small businesses. Every dollar makes a difference,” Kauaʻi County Mayor Derek Kawakami said in an Instagram post.

Although Hawaii Governor Josh Green has requested an expedited federal disaster declaration, which could unlock low-interest Small Business Administration loans, President Donald Trump has not yet approved the request. Originally bound for a broad nationwide release, reports emerged of concerns from officials at three airlines who wanted to reduce the scope of the project with a “Start, crawl, walk, run” approach. Consequently, the AI system will now be phased in as part of a smaller rollout to the three airports serving Washington DC (Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Dulles International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, where a 90-day trial period will ensue before going national. The system is expected to be in place across the country by the end of 2028.

Despite the smaller than expected initiation, the advent of the SMART system has  nonetheless been hailed by trade body Airlines for America as “one of the most exciting and bold initiatives taken on by the FAA in decades.”

The AI’s role will be to analyse flight schedules, cross-referenced with weather information, airport capacity data, and operational constraints, helping to predict and avoid congestion. Officials also anticipate future developments will allow the system to manage arrival intervals and carry out advance schedule planning up to 45 days ahead—something over which critics have said the FAA should have greater control, instead of the current situation that sees airlines jostling for prized slots. In addition to the launch of the SMART programme, the FAA plans to open a central office at the Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington DC.

In a statement earlier in the year, FAA Administrator, Bryan Bedford, explained why a new approach is required: “The way we manage traffic today is chaotic, and we can do better. We need to manage that at the FAA, rather than rely on commercial airlines to simply schedule however they want,” he said.

The SMART programme comes after a period of chaos and confusion around the safe and efficient management of America’s skies. Industry layoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic, failure to re-recruit sufficient ATC workers, failure to pay federal workers during government budget standoffs, the impact of severe weather systems, quality and safety concerns at Boeing, and a series of accidents and near-misses, have created the perfect storm that has informed Trump administration thinking about the need for centralisation.

The move also coincides with an ongoing international conversation about the role of AI in society and how best to mitigate the risks it entails. Against that backdrop, US officials have sought to reassure the public and industry that human air traffic controllers are not being replaced. Instead the AI system is intended to work in a support role.

The global average jet fuel price rose by 6.1% in a week to $181.46 (€153) per barrel, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), highlighting a cost increase that extends well beyond the United States and is also being closely watched by European carriers.

Executives from American, United and Southwest outlined plans to adjust their schedules at Morgan Stanley’s annual Laguna Conference on Wednesday, with some flights already set to disappear from schedules towards the end of the year.

American Airlines Chief Financial Officer Devon May said fuel prices for the fourth quarter were running approximately $1 per gallon above the level the carrier had forecast in July. The difference is expected to add around $1 billion (€843 million) to American’s fuel bill.

“What’s happened in the last four weeks, though, is fuel’s run up probably $1 a gallon or something like that for the fourth quarter alone,” May said.

American is consequently planning further capacity adjustments towards the end of the fourth quarter. However, demand remains strong, with the airline expecting third-quarter revenue to increase between 16% and 19% compared with the same period last year.

United Airlines is also removing flights from its schedule. Chief Financial Officer Michael Leskinen said some services originally planned for December would no longer operate.

“As you look into the fourth quarter, there’ll be some flights in December that we won’t fly that we thought we were going to fly,” Leskinen said. “If fuel remains high, we’ll make some adjustments into the first quarter and beyond into 2027.”

The airline has not disclosed which routes will be affected. Leskinen said that routes at the lower end of profitability can become unprofitable when fuel prices rise sharply.

Southwest Airlines has meanwhile reduced around half of the modest year-on-year capacity growth it had originally planned for 2026. Chief Financial Officer Tom Doxey said further reductions would be a “natural response” if fuel remained elevated.

However, Southwest later clarified that schedule adjustments made so far had been minimal and that Doxey was illustrating how the airline could respond if fuel remained expensive rather than announcing substantial additional cuts.

Cheaper flights under pressure

The reductions could have a disproportionate impact on travellers looking for lower fares. Flights operating at less popular times or on routes with thinner demand are generally more vulnerable to capacity cuts because their margins are already lower.

That could include services on Tuesdays and Saturdays, as well as very early morning or late-night flights, according to aviation experts cited by CNN.

The situation is particularly challenging for budget-conscious passengers in the United States following the disappearance of Spirit Airlines, which halted operations in May, while other low-cost carriers have increasingly sought to attract passengers willing to pay for more premium products.

Airlines have nevertheless reported little evidence that higher prices are significantly weakening overall passenger demand.

United said its fourth-quarter bookings remained “tremendously strong”, with premium travel, corporate demand and economy bookings all proving resilient.

“Bookings have continued as we expected, so that piece of the equation is resilient – very little evidence of demand destruction,” Leskinen said.

Strong demand combined with reduced capacity could make it more difficult for passengers to find cheaper tickets, particularly if fuel prices remain elevated into 2027.

European airlines also exposed to fuel surge

Although the latest capacity announcements concern US carriers, the underlying increase in jet fuel prices is global, meaning European airlines are exposed to the same energy-market pressures.

Fuel represents one of the aviation industry’s largest operating expenses, and sustained price increases can affect decisions on capacity, routes and ultimately ticket prices.

European airlines may have some protection through fuel hedging, whereby carriers lock in part of their future fuel requirements at predetermined prices. This can reduce exposure to sudden short-term increases, although it cannot completely protect airlines from a prolonged period of high prices.

The pressure also comes as European aviation faces additional costs associated with fleet renewal, sustainable aviation fuel requirements and the wider decarbonisation of the sector.

Aircraft delivery delays have added another challenge by forcing some airlines to operate older and generally less fuel-efficient aircraft for longer than originally planned. For passengers, however, higher fuel prices do not automatically translate into equivalent increases in ticket prices. Airfares ultimately depend heavily on supply and demand, as airlines balance operating costs against the number of seats available and passengers’ willingness to pay.

With US carriers already beginning to remove less profitable capacity, airlines on both sides of the Atlantic will be watching closely to see whether the latest jet fuel surge proves temporary or begins to influence schedules further into 2027.

The SongTeller Hotel has 245 rooms and suites, all filled with references to the artist’s songs, her unmistakable style and unique Southern charm woven throughout the private and public spaces.

The different room categories draw directly on her life and music. The Acoustic Suites, for instance, draw inspiration from the lyric “The sky is green and the grass is blue”, and the Six Sisters Suites pay homage to Parton’s close bond with her five sisters, accommodating up to six guests.

“All my life, I’ve been a SongTeller. And there’s no better place to write a song than Nashville”, Parton said of the project, describing the hotel as her “love letter” to the city, and a place where musicians and guests could come together to experience “the spirit of Music City”.

The hotel has two entertainment venues: Jolene’s, the top-floor bar, which offers a nightly stage for emerging Nashville singers and songwriters; and Parton’s Live, on the second floor, which is dedicated to the city’s songwriting culture through writers’ rounds, songwriter sessions and rising-star showcases. It aims to “immerse guests in the art of storytelling” and songwriting, around shared plates of food.

The entire third floor of the hotel, covering more than 1,860 square metres, is home to Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum, and traces Parton’s journey from her childhood in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains to the height of international fame.

The experience begins with a recreation of the small cabin where she grew up before moving through the people, places, and events that shaped her life and career.

Interactive exhibits will feature personal stories, multimedia installations, and rarely seen objects from her collection. Footage of Parton herself, recorded earlier this year, will also guide visitors through parts of her story.

Over a seven-decade career, Parton sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Her most famous songs are Jolene, I Will Always Love You, and the working-woman anthem, 9 to 5.

Parton’s legacy, however, extends far beyond her music. She was also an actress, a philanthropist, and an astute businesswoman who turned her musical success into an empire, all while never forgetting her origins or those in need through initiatives like her Imagination Library.

One of her most successful ventures is Dollywood, the theme park that she opened in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It has become one of the state’s biggest tourist attractions, as well as a major economic driver for the region, supporting thousands of jobs.

Tennessee’s governor, Bill Lee, together with Nashville International Airport, has announced plans to rename the airport in her honour. The final name has yet to be determined.

Lee proposed the move shortly after the singer’s death, describing her “extraordinary life” as “forever woven into the fabric of our state”.

“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favourite daughter and greet travellers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith and kindness”, he added.

However, the statutory scheme benefits a range of hubs in line with a formula that caps large-hub airports at up to 55% of a given funding pool, medium hubs at 15% and small hubs at 20%. Simple Flying reports that similar grants have been awarded through different funding rounds under different administrations.

One notable award in the latest $870 million allocation, accounting for $289 million, went to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for a new terminal access road. It represents the largest single payout and, as commentators have pointed out, goes to an airport outside the Sun Belt. Elsewhere, Denver International Airport (DEN) is receiving $69.11 million, while Chicago O’Hare is set to receive $47.89 million for taxiway reconstruction. Airports in Alaska and Ohio have also received smaller grants.

Alongside the FAA’s announcement, Duffy said in a statement that the work would provide the state-of-the-art runways and infrastructure “American families deserve”, making travel “safer, smoother, and more efficient”.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford echoed that rhetoric, saying the agency is “prioritizing improving our nation’s airports and ensuring we issue grants quickly and efficiently”.

“This funding does more than just rebuild runways and taxiways,” he said, adding that “it modernizes the travel experience for American families, ensuring our airports are safe and ready for the future”.

The end of the five-year programme authorised by the 2021 Infrastructure Law means any additional federal investment will require new official approval. Inside the cockpit, both pilots put on airtight oxygen masks equipped with built-in microphones and declared an emergency to Las Vegas air traffic control.

In recordings, one of the pilots can be heard saying: “Delta 2311, currently in rapid descent, we’d like to descend to 9,000 feet. And we’re direct Las Vegas.”

The air traffic controller then asked the crew if the oxygen masks had dropped. The pilot responded: “Affirmative”.  

Incidents of this kind involving pressurisation are extremely rare. They can be caused by a malfunction in the aircraft’s pressurisation system, a leak, or a structural problem. The precise reason it happened on this flight has yet to be determined.

At 35,000 feet, passengers and crew have an estimated 30 to 60 seconds of “useful consciousness” once oxygen masks drop, before the effects of hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen to the body, begin to set in impairing functions, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Although the pilots reacted according to protocol, following emergency procedures and ultimately securing a safe landing, passengers on board described scenes of panic, triggered by the sudden, rapid descent combined with the deployment of the masks.

The confusion was exacerbated by the fact that it was difficult for passengers to make out the crew members’ announcements, since the latter were themselves wearing oxygen masks.

One passenger described the incident as “pretty traumatic” on Reddit, adding that the scariest part “wasn’t even the descent, it was not knowing what was going on”.

He added that the cabin was “confused and pretty panicked”.

A rapid descent following a serious loss of cabin pressure is standard procedure once the oxygen masks have deployed. Failure to descend in such circumstances could indicate something far more alarming, such as the possibility of pilot incapacitation due to hypoxia.

A Delta spokesperson told Fox News that safety was the airline’s priority, stating that “the flight crew of Delta flight 2311 LAX-SLC followed their training and procedures to safely bring the aircraft to optimal altitude when an unexpected pressurisation issue occurred”.

The plane landed safely at Harry Reid International Airport, and passengers were offered alternative travel arrangements to reach their destination.

In the wake of the storm, the Musubi Truck has used its commercial kitchen, propane, and generators to provide nearly 600 free meals in Wailua, while nearby businesses contributed drinks and equipment. Its co-owner, Kelly Kakalia, prioritised residents’ access to food, water, and power over short-term trade, later passing generators to families still without electricity. The response illustrates how visitor-facing businesses are also part of the island’s emergency support network.

Conditions can vary sharply by district and property. Some parts of the island escaped major damage, and at least one Poʻipū rental owner reported functioning water and nearby beach access. Yet the South Shore suffered serious damage around Baby Beach, and local appeals warned that visitors could place additional demand on scarce food, fuel, and utilities. Travellers should therefore treat island-wide imagery and isolated reassuring reports with equal caution: the status of a specific accommodation and the route to it matter more than a general impression.

Advice to holidaymakers bound for the islands includes:

• Contact the provider directly: confirm power, running water, access roads, staffing and the property’s reopening date before travelling.
• Review flexible options: ask about rebooking or refunds; policies differ, although some affected resorts have offered both.
