On 11 May 2026, Apple Corps Ltd, the company founded by The Beatles, announced it would be opening an official seven-floor fan experience on 3 Savile Row. The central London location is well-known to avid fans of the pop group; not only did it serve as Apple Corps Ltd headquarters from 1968 to 1972, but it was also the location where Let It Be was recorded and where The Beatles gave their last public performance on 30 January 1969.

“It was such a trip to get back to 3 Savile Row recently and have a look around. There are so many special memories within the walls, not to mention the rooftop. The team have put together some really impressive plans, and I’m excited for people to see it when it’s ready,” Paul McCartney said about the upcoming project.

The concert on 30 January 1969 has since become an important part of music history. In the middle of the day and after insistence by group member John Lennon, The Beatles gave their last public performance from the rooftop of 3 Savile Row. The gig, which included songs such as Don’t Let Me Down, I’ve Got A Feelin’, and Get Back – quickly created chaos as fans gathered around, and after 42 minutes, the police put an end to the matter. In 1970, the band broke up.

“Wow, it’s like coming home,” drummer Ringo Starr commented on revisiting 3 Savile Row.

The immersive experience, which will be called The Beatles at 3 Savile Row, should open its doors in 2027. Allegedly, the idea was first introduced by Tom Greene, CEO of Apple Corps since 2025, who worked on the Harry Potter franchise in the past.

 Although not all details about the project have been unveiled just yet, fans will be able to visit a recreation of the basement studio where Let It Be was recorded and to relive the Beatles’ rooftop concert in the exact same spot. The Beatles at 3 Savile Row will also include a shop where fans can buy licensed Beatles products.

“Well, you go in on the ground floor, and there’s memorabilia and stuff like that. Then you work your way up through the building, and [see] various things that happened here and there, until you get to the top, where you go out on the roof and pretend to be a Beatle,” Paul McCartney summarised the experience.

The Beatles at 3 Savile Row will be the first The Beatles experience. Neither Liverpool‘s Beatles Museum nor the Beatles Story are officially licensed, while popular The Beatles spots such as Abbey Road are easily visitable but not necessarily adapted to the crowds that often gather around.

Fans who are eager to visit The Beatles at 3 Savile Row can already register online in order to be kept up to date once the venue opens its doors. Lufthansa Group has stood down 20,000 flights over a six-month period. Air France has predicted an increase in fuel costs of €2 billion for the year, and American Airlines has warned its fuel costs will be up by around $4 billion (€3.4 billion). AirAsia’s co-founder Tony Fernandez has said the situation is worse for aviation than the COVID-19 travel shutdown.

While travel industry stakeholders fear the fallout of the geopolitical uncertainty on consumer confidence, some commentators are emphasising that it is better for airlines to look ahead and cancel in advance rather than leave travellers stranded at the last minute.

Julia Lo Bue-Said, chief executive of Advantage Travel Partnership has pointed out that airlines are prioritising popular routes meaning core summer holiday destinations “remain unaffected.” She has insisted that, as a result, “customers can continue to book with confidence.”

However, Rory Boland, editor of consumer champion Which? Travel, said: “It is understandable that holidaymakers are feeling apprehensive about their summer travel plans due to the wave of cancellations.” He recommended that worried consumers choose package holidays that are covered by price protections in the event of disruption.

Responding to the crisis, the UK government has announced emergency rules allowing airlines to group passengers together to rationalise aircraft deployment and fuel consumption. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has confirmed a national hedging strategy to bring in fuel from the US, as well as increasing UK refinery output.

In Europe meanwhile, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, has refused to declare special circumstances that would relieve airlines of their issued their obligations to passengers in the event of cancellations. The guidance obliges airlines to honour existing consumer protections and means they must continue to reimburse and assist passengers whose flights are affected. Only a localised fuel shortage under specific conditions would qualify as an exception to the rule.

Middleton says the system feels inconsistent, as pets are allowed in the cabin when leaving the UK but not when coming back. She has had to travel through European cities such as Amsterdam before taking a ferry home. According to her, all the required health checks and paperwork are already completed in advance. Allowing pets in the cabin would therefore not introduce new risks. Supporters also point out that several other countries already permit small animals in the cabin under strict conditions. An update to Section 11a of the British flag carrier’s conditions of carriage covering acceptable conduct on board now states: “If, while you are on board the aircraft, we reasonably believe that you have filmed, live-streamed or photographed our crew or other colleagues without their consent, we may take any measures we think reasonable to prevent you continuing your behaviour.” Those measures could include potential removal from onward journeys and offending passengers being reported to law enforcement agencies.

The rise of social media and mobile phone cameras has meant an increase in incidents where members of the public photograph or film each other, and employees of firms they interact with—often during disputes or disagreements over antisocial actions or levels of service. The resulting footage often makes its way to social platforms, where commenters have been known to “pile on” or deluge accounts with criticism and hateful comments.

Tech giants such as Mark Zuckerberg have claimed that their products have contributed positively to the public arena by raising awareness of injustices and sharing information about movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, which previously would have lacked a forum.

However, it could be argued that the advent of in-flight Wi-Fi services fast enough to allow streaming, including SpaceX’s Starlink, with whom BA has recently contracted, will encourage more people to generate controversial content, creating a legal minefield. Furthermore, recent tech developments that make it even easier for the public to film each other without the other person’s knowledge, such as Zuckerberg’s “Meta” glasses, have raised legal and ethical questions. The British Airways ban includes the use of such devices.

Usually, filming or image capture in a public place where people have no reasonable expectation of privacy is considered to be within the law, though perhaps not within “good practice” for professional photographers. The Independent, reporting on the latest from BA on this issue, notes that according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), if filming or photography “does not endanger the safety of the cabin in any way”, then cabin crew and air captains have discretion over whether to allow the activity.

This measure has been presented as a win-win for both passengers and airlines. Travellers gain greater certainty ahead of the summer season, while airlines retain access to highly valuable take-off and landing slots at busy hubs such as Heathrow and Gatwick. These slots can be worth tens of millions of pounds and roll over from one year to the next, provided they are used at least 80% of the time.

The Department for Transport (DfT) stated that this temporary relaxation of regulations would help airlines “build realistic schedules” and avoid last-minute disruption. The plan was agreed by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, airport operators and major carriers, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and easyJet.

“This legislation gives airlines the tools to adjust flights in good time,” said Alexander, adding that the aim is to “protect passengers and businesses” and provide “long-term certainty”, rather than reacting to an immediate supply crisis.

The logic behind the new measure has raised eyebrows. The BBC has asked travel expert Simon Calder to explain the reasoning behind “cancelling flights to prevent cancellations”. Calder noted that the aim is to prioritise holiday flights over business departures. This would enable the consolidation of multiple daily services on busy routes, such as Lufthansa’s Heathrow – Frankfurt schedule, and the transfer of passengers to fewer, fuller flights. This would save fuel for leisure routes with less frequent services and help avoid last-minute chaos.

This measure is essentially a plan B in case the situation in the Middle East escalates further. Most European airlines have now reached the critical three-month supply threshold flagged at the start of the conflict on 28 February, when the joint US-Israel strike on Iran quickly engulfed the region. Despite a fragile ceasefire, Iran continues to block or severely disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for transporting jet fuel. The UK imports around 65% of its jet fuel, much of which comes from the Middle East.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has already warned of potential supply pressures in Europe from June. In response, the UK is increasing imports from the US and Africa, while also urging domestic refineries to maximise output.

Reactions remain mixed. Conservatives have criticised the approach as “herding passengers onto a different plane at the airline’s choosing”, though consumer groups have noted that existing regulations already allow for such changes, provided sufficient notice is given.

Rob Bishton, chief executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said that “relaxing the rules around slots at airports will allow airlines more flexibility, so we expect them to give passengers as much notice as possible of cancellations during this period”.

The key takeaway for passengers remains unchanged: know your rights. If your flight is cancelled or significantly altered, you may be entitled to re-routing or compensation under UK and EU regulations, particularly if the airline provides less than 14 days’ notice.

This measure is expected to be formalised through a statutory instrument later this week, as the industry attempts to stay ahead of what could be a challenging summer for global air travel.

Margate, in Kent on the UK’s southeast coast, was a maritime port in the Middle Ages, and became popular with holidaymakers in the 18^th century as access became easier via the river Thames, and the advent of the railways allowed people to experience the benefits of sea bathing. Later, the legendary local theme park, Dreamland, evolved and still offers historic rides, classic side shows, and eateries, plus an exciting calendar of festivals and events.

In the 20^th century, the town had enough cachet for the Nayland Rock to welcome famous guests, including English actor and filmmaker, Charlie Chaplin, Nobel prize-winning poet TS Eliot, and rock star Mick Jagger. It has also served as a filming location.

TS Eliot’s poem, The Wasteland, was not inspired by the place, but the hotel did enter into a period of decline with the rise of package holidays, as British tourists sought sunshine and began taking cheap flights to destinations in Greece and Spain. During the early 2000s, Nayland even housed asylum seekers. Now, the building permissions documents submitted to the local authority note its “extremely poor state of repair.”

The developers, Arcvelop and Brede Hotels, aim to revive their fortunes and those of the town itself, with a dream to “restore the former grandeur of the building” by returning “a locally significant historic building back into active use.” While local destination manager, Visit Kent notes that the town still boasts “traditional holiday-town charm, a world-class art gallery, sandy beaches (a rare treasure in the UK), and “cool café culture,” it remains synonymous in some people’s eyes with faded glamour. Arcvelop say their plan ties in with “regeneration efforts” and will bring a “positive boost” to the locality.

If approved, the hotel, which occupies a Victorian crescent, will be turned into 50 flats, 16 holiday lets, and a two-floor commercial space expected to become a hospitality venue. The developers emphasise that they intend to preserve the character of the place by “enhancing, restoring and redefining the Royal Crescent” and even reintroducing former character features such as pillars.

Ground could break on the project by the end of 2026, with the works expected to cost around £20 million and take two and a half years to complete.

A separate AHC must be obtained for every trip from Britain to the EU, but lasts for up to six months as long as the relevant rabies vaccinations are valid. Within that valid period, the AHC also covers border crossings within the EU bloc.

Anyone already in an EU country with their pet under a pet passport should note that British border authorities will not require them to replace their pet passport with an AHC for re-entry to the UK.

“The cost and complexity of obtaining an Animal Health Certificate for every journey has prevented many guide dog owners from being able to work, attend important events and travel independently,” the body told the BBC.

The demise of the pet passport is not the only change afoot. Travellers who want animals to be accompanied abroad by someone else will need to complete additional forms and provide written permission. If your pet is following you abroad, it must come within five days. And a maximum of only five animals per vehicle or per foot passenger will be permitted. Some exceptions will be made, for example, for animals that are competing in events.

And owners are just as much affected by regime change as their four-legged companions. Travellers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys due to the rollout of the EU’s Entry Exit Scheme (EES) on 10 April. It means British travellers are treated as third-country nationals on arrival to the bloc and must register their biometrics and passport details for security tracking purposes.

The introduction of EES has seen long queues and disruption develop at some hubs, with passengers missing flights due to extended processing times, leading to stakeholder calls for flexibility. Some nations highly dependent on British tourism are taking matters into their own hands to suspend the EES rules for the 2026 summer season.

Dunster Beach in Somerset, boasts “wide open views across the Bristol Channel towards the Welsh coastline” and is described in a local guide as “a quieter alternative to nearby Minehead Beach, it’s a peaceful spot popular with walkers, families and those looking to relax.” Unfortunately, it is particularly vulnerable to short-term pollution after heavy rainfall, giving it one of the worst water quality rankings in the county.

While 15 of the 20 beaches on the list are in the south of the UK—stretching from Devon, Somerset, to Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex, and Kent to Essex—still, the north of the country does not escape. In fact, one of the north’s most iconic pleasure beaches, Blackpool, is blacklisted. The state of the beach there was bemoaned by local Member of Parliament Chris Webb in 2024, who described the water pollution as a threat both to health and to the locals’ sense of pride.

Poor water management practices have also contributed to the poisoning of many public waters and coastlines. Critics point to a lack of investment and renewal by privatised water companies, which have been fined by the government amid the controversy, and banned from awarding bonuses to their executives.

But one of the people behind this latest water quality round-up, Martin Danemaq, highlighted the positive takeaways from the report, noting how few poor-quality seaside resorts there were. “Just 20 beaches in the UK remain unsuitable for entering the water out of the 400 official bathing spots nationwide – some of which are nestled within the most popular coastal areas in the country,” he said.

Visitor numbers at the free national museums all rose substantially, averaging a 70% increase in the year after the policy was introduced. Visitors at the V&A rose by 111 percent from 1.1 million to 2.3 million. But critics say the profile of people visiting the museums has not changed and that cultural, class, and education barriers remain despite the efforts at democratisation.

Amid tight finances, today’s Labour government is reviewing the free entry policy, saying it will explore options with the museum sector, including a look at how a change in the funding model could benefit the arts.

The idea has not been well received in all quarters. The British Museum has come in for particular criticism in recent years for its collection that some say is made up of artefacts unlawfully taken during the colonial era from nations and peoples around the world. The Parthenon (or Elgin) Marbles are an infamous subject of contention, with Greece advocating for their return.

Reuters reports that the vice-chair of the Caribbean Community’s reparations commission, Eric Phillips, has slammed the proposal as “unethical,” asking: “Why should we have to pay to see our heritage?”

In addition, Open Restitution Africa (ORA) said Africans and others must already currently travel and gain visas to come to the UK and see their own cultural artefacts and that “Introducing entry fees further compounds these inequalities.”

Some have called for a pricing strategy that would include reductions for such international visitors, while others question how paid entry could be implemented at all without causing controversy and queues, if every visitor needed to undergo an identity check. The government has not yet commented on the issues raised. A decision is expected by the end of 2026.

Under the terms of an agreement signed last year, British arrivals will be treated as though they are entering the Schengen Area when they enter Gibraltar meaning they must register fully with the new EU-wide entry-exit system (EES). The first time they cross a Schengen border, they must register biometrics including fingerprints and facial images, as well as passport details, and travel dates. Their entry and subsequent exits from the bloc will be traced by the digital system.

People accustomed to frequent crossings into Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory on a headland off Spain’s southern coast after 15 July 2026 will find passport requirements have tightened. Beyond that date, British passport holders must ensure their documents are less than 10 years old on the day they enter Gibraltar, and that they have at least three months’ validity remaining after their planned departure date.

What’s more, visits to the territory will be capped at a total of 90 days in any 180 days, a change from the current unrestricted 90-day visit length. The new 90-day stay includes any time spent elsewhere in the EU, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

Irish passport holders, and Schengen nationals are exempt both from the border registration requirements and the limits on the duration of their stay, as are residents of Gibraltar—who will need to prove residency with a certificate.

Although the terms of Brexit, the UK’s exit from the European Union, were negotiated by the Conservatives, now in opposition, the party’s shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel has criticised the new border arrangements, saying they carry “significant implications for British citizens travelling to Gibraltar and these need to be considered. Parliament cannot be expected to sign a blank cheque to the EU.”

About 15,000 people cross the Spain-Gibraltar border every day, around half the territory’s workforce. Fears surrounded the negotiation of the new border system, including the enforcement of a hard border that would slow the flow of goods and provoke delays. To avoid this, the agreement about to come into force has necessitated the creation of new facility for passport checks at the airport to cater to cumulative passport checks on arrivals from third countries.

Announcing the deal, authorities on both sides claimed it creates a “fluid border between Gibraltar and Spain,” and establishes a bespoke customs model that promises to “eliminate burdensome goods checks at the land border.”
