The map covers the Hackney area and is designed by Igloo. It features lively pubs, iconic clubs, grassroots venues, and cultural spaces, all accredited by the council for safety standards and inclusive policies, and makes it easier, for example, to find places with wheelchair access and check accurate opening and closing times.

And it’s not only socialising spots that are included, but also the “hygiene factors” and transport options that help everyone have a better time when they are out on the town. The locations of toilet facilities, fresh drinking water, places to charge a phone, cycle paths, and active bus routes are among the helpful information identified.

Finding the new map itself is also facilitated by QR codes displayed at venues around the borough, and keyrings that the council is distributing. Scanning the code takes users to the digital tool, which also has a link from the council’s Hackney Nights website.

The initiative is part of Hackney Council’s “Hackney Nights” campaign, whose efforts, ongoing since 2019, include training 4,400 nightlife hospitality workers in best safeguarding practices. Over the coming year, the project will also look at how the council licenses night-time venues, reviewing planning rules and noise regulations, and putting forward a Cultural Strategy that supports the area’s night-time earners, movers, and shakers.

It’s a drive that comes in the wake of COVID-19’s impact on the hospitality sector, and as London and the United Kingdom more widely are grappling with widespread pub closures and the shutdown of some of the country’s most beloved nightclubs. Fewer people are venturing to rural pubs and restaurants, and with more and more buildings in towns and cities converted for residential use, councils are under pressure to close noisy venues down. 

Hackney’s own Dance Tunnel, in Dalston, is one such victim, after its owners stated in 2016 that they could no longer continue to operate sustainably due to strict noise rules that forced the club to shut its doors by 3:00 am. Other venues, including the BBE Store, a local record shop, and the Lord Napier Star pub, are still threatened by noise complaints.

The problem has led to authorities adopting so-called “agent of change” principles, which put the onus on housing developers near pre-existing venues to adequately soundproof the new homes, rather than making long-standing venues adapt to new neighbours. The new approach has helped to save legendary venues such as London’s Ministry of Sound, and the Night and Day café in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, after bitter noise disputes and court battles over noise abatement.

The safety aspects of the Hackney Nights campaign also address public concerns over how vulnerable people might be when they have been out socialising at night, highlighted by recent tragedies such as the currently unexplained death of an 18-year-old man after a night out in Leicestershire.

The 50,000-km adventure was prompted by a marriage break-up and musings in a birthday card sent by his army veteran father about whether it was feasible to walk from London to New York over the continental crossing between Russia and Alaska—known as the Bering land bridge and believed to be a vital migration passage for Ice Age creatures such as woolly mammoths and muskoxen, as well as ancestral human hunter-gatherers.

A former paratrooper himself, Karl apparently could not resist trying the feat. Equipped with a tent, a camera, and a few hundred in US currency, he went from South to North America, headed east ⁠from Alaska to Russia, and traversed Mongolia and China. He managed to bag some sponsorship in the form of boots from Zamberlan, which he told OutThereOutdoors in 2008 had helped prevent blisters. 

Brain blips, too, were a risk, he explained to Reuters in 2025, because: “Sometimes the monotony is incredible. You’re in deserts, and the landscape doesn’t change for days to weeks. That can get a little mind-bending. The same with the Arctic.” Thankfully, somewhere along the way he gained a Panasonic Toughbook Laptop to help keep him connected to the world, as well as an Iridium satellite phone in case of emergencies, and batteries. He also relied on “a good map, a good compass, and a Garmin GPS” and a “decent survival knife.”

Having vowed not to benefit from motorised transport, he has used a trolley, a sledge, and a backpack to lug his gear, as well as skis in places. He braved hurricanes and jungles, a Panamanian prison, an armed hold-up in Mexico, and a rescue from the icy Bering Strait waters, after which he was jailed again by Russian authorities for entering the country illegally. BBC reporting mentions, somewhat churlishly perhaps, that “only” about 15 of the 28 years were spent walking due to such problems. The COVID pandemic was another trip hazard. He even swam across the Caspian Sea and the English Channel.

Bushby was greeted by crowds of well-wishers as he arrived back in Hull, a port city in East Yorkshire, England, and now faces the new challenge he confessed to the AFP last year: a potential identity crisis as he re-adjusts to “normal” life while also becoming the subject of a Werner Herzog documentary.

An unlikely marriage between budget airlines and luxury travel is taking shape, with low-cost carriers turning their attention to “high-end” customers. 

Though it might sound counterintuitive at a time of inflation, cost-of-living protests in major European cities and rising travel costs, courtesy in part of wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, demand for more luxurious flying experiences appears to be taking off, even as travellers tighten their belts.

Jet2, the British low-cost airline whose catchy Nothing beats a Jet2Holiday advert became a viral sensation, is the latest to embrace the trend. Joining companies like BeOn and La Compagnie, two airlines specialising in all-business-class travel, the company has introduced its first aircraft dedicated entirely to business-class passengers.

However, it is not open to all. Unlike its regular holiday flights, the new VIP aircraft, based at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, is available exclusively for private group charters.

A Boeing 737–800 NG has been reconfigured to this end. To ensure more space, it has but 76 seats, instead of the 189 seats typically squeezed into its low-cost economy layout. The latter has no business-class seats at all.

Fewer seats mean considerably more legroom, with at least 109 cm in the reconfigured cabin, compared with around 76 cm in a normal economy cabin.

The new seats feature black leather-like upholstery, wide armrests and fold-down tray tables. Photographs reveal what appears to be adjustable footrests, allowing travellers to put their feet up. 

Catering has followed suit, with upgraded meals and drinks to match the luxurious surroundings. They are tailored to the requirements of each charter group.

According to Jet2, the new all-business-class configuration comes in response to growing demand from sports teams, musicians, entertainment companies and other specialist groups looking for privacy, comfort and flexibility when travelling together.

The company has previously flown professional football teams in its standard economy-configured aircraft. With this conversion, it could very well appeal to top-tier Premier League clubs, offering much-needed extra legroom for players to stretch out and rest between matches.

“This is the first time that we have featured a dedicated business class specification on our aircraft, so this is an incredibly exciting development for charter customers”, said Trevor Caplis, head of charter and airline sales at Jet2.

“The feedback from charter customers who have flown on it has been exceptional, with the premium feel, space and comfort onboard really shining through. This luxurious cabin environment, alongside the award-winning Jet2 customer service, looks set to be a huge hit with charter clients this winter.”

The aircraft has already welcomed its first charter passengers, and bookings for the winter season are open, with the service available until May 2027.

Prices have not been publicly disclosed. Quotations depend on the specific requirements of each group.

“I’m hugely excited to see my bold vision for Oxford Street coming to life from today. It is a truly momentous occasion for the capital,” Khan said, describing the transformation as the beginning of a new chapter for the street.

Oxford Street attracts around 500,000 visitors daily and generates more than £3 billion in annual spending. However, the shopping destination has faced increasing challenges in recent years, including the growth of online retail and changing consumer habits.

According to City Hall estimates, pedestrianisation could contribute an additional £82 million annually to the local economy and support more than 700 new jobs. Major retailers, including Selfridges, John Lewis and IKEA, have welcomed the initiative. 

The first phase introduces temporary street improvements while authorities collect feedback from businesses, residents and visitors. By spring 2027, plans include planting more than 50 trees, installing over 100 seats, introducing new lighting and creating two public squares, transforming the street into a more attractive destination for shopping, dining and leisure.

Initial reactions from shoppers have been largely positive, visitors welcomed the additional walking space and quieter surroundings. Speaking to Al Jazeera, biology teacher Muneera Alfadhel described the experience as “magical”.

However, the project has also raised concerns among residents, taxi drivers and accessibility campaigners. Critics warn that diverting traffic onto neighbouring streets could increase congestion, while changes to bus routes may make the shopping district harder to reach for people with limited mobility.

Transport for London will monitor traffic conditions, with replacement bus stops located approximately 200 metres from the pedestrianised area. Emergency vehicles will retain access, while deliveries will be permitted between midnight and 7am.

The transformation comes after years of debate over the future of Oxford Street, with previous pedestrianisation proposals failing to materialise. Authorities will now assess the initial changes and gather public feedback before finalising the permanent design.

Following an agreement between the UK and the European Union in December 2026, British Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer has now confirmed that young UK-based people who wish to study, train, or gain work experience in the EU will once again be able to apply for Erasmus+. The move is generally seen as part of the Labour government’s efforts to strengthen its ties with the EU.

The United Kingdom is set to re-enter the Erasmus programme starting from 1 January 2027, but applications will open as soon as November 2026. In a statement to Parliament, Falconer underlined that the scheme will not just benefit university-based study exchanges but also further education students, apprentices, education staff, and others.

“Applications open this November. They are not simply for undergraduate university students. They are for educational institutions of all kinds,” Falconer stated.

Previously, the UK Government has calculated that more than 100,000 people per year would be able to benefit from a return to the Erasmus programme, with disadvantaged students likely to benefit highly from the scheme. The country will pay around €648 million  (£570 million) in order to participate in the 2027-2028 academic year.

Erasmus and the UK

Although the United Kingdom was previously part of the Erasmus programme, the country left following former prime minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal in 2020. At the time, Johnson said the scheme did not offer value for money.

The Erasmus programme was then replaced by the Turing Scheme exchange programme, which was terminated once the return of Erasmus+ was announced. That decision was part of former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer’s post-Brexit reset deal in 2025.

For young Britons, the fact that the UK will be rejoining the Erasmus+ programme also opens the way to other opportunities. Those include the DiscoverEU programme, which gives 18-year-olds the chance to travel for free on environmentally friendly modes of transport. For up to seven days within a period of no more than one month. 

Being a part of the Erasmus+ scheme, the programme aims to allow young people to explore Europe’s diversity, learn about its cultural heritage and history, and connect with people from all over the continent. Although applications for 2027 are closed, if the DiscoverEU programme continues, 18-year-old Brits will be able to apply for the pass at the end of 2027.

Currently, the museum site is at the city’s Royal Albert Dock, but Apple Corps, the company John, Paul, George, and Ringo created in 1968, has announced the attraction is moving to new premises at the former St Johns Market in St Johns Shopping Centre, opposite Liverpool’s iconic Lime Street railway station.

The market and surrounding precinct were designed in 1969 by James A. Roberts. The architects replaced an 1822 neoclassical building with a Brutalist structure whose concrete forms were beloved by some and seen as an eyesore by others. It is now undergoing renovations that its website says will mean it is “stripped of its 1970s feel.”

The Beatles museum will move in by 2028, taking up 10,000m² and comprising original artefacts, sets from a new four-part film by Sam Mendes due for release in spring 2028, and interactive displays intended to immerse visitors in the world of the Beatles, from their modest Liverpudlian childhoods to worldwide fame.

Visitors will be invited to explore a recreation of the legendary Liverpool Cavern, cradle of the Merseybeat sound. A mock-up of London’s Abbey Road Studios, where the band recorded nearly all their work and whose exterior zebra crossing features (in) on the album of the same name, will also be there, alongside other notable locations that peppered their journey.

Also forming part of the Beatles odyssey in the St Johns development will be the St Johns Beacon, or Radio City Tower. Oddly for a structure that is Liverpool’s second tallest, standing 138 metres tall, it will host an underwater-themed, Yellow Submarine-inspired attraction, offering 360-degree vistas.

It is anticipated the dual project will not only tap into the ongoing Beatles fanbase, but also new interest sparked by the upcoming Sam Mendes production, as well as today’s general popularity of music-driven travel and tourism.

Guests will be able to buy combi-tickets for the two new venues, and sales will go towards the Apple Corps Liverpool Trust, which raises funds to support new local talent and culture. The City Council, the Region Combined Authority, and the national UK government are all on board, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has praised the “ambition” behind the scheme, which he said he wanted to see more of across Britain, “backing the things our great cities do best and turning that global reputation into jobs, opportunity and growth.”

Bradford is a significant hub for services and industry in West Yorkshire, with a local economy valued by the city’s Metropolitan District Council at roughly £10 billion to £12 billion (between €11.9 billion and €14.3 billion), driven by advanced manufacturing, logistics, finance, and a growing tourism and cultural sector. Destination manager Visit Bradford estimates the city exceeded £1 billion in economic impact following its tenure as the UK’s 2025 City of Culture. The council anticipates the new station will bring in at least a further £1 billion in economic benefits.

Hailing the station development, expected to be completed some time in the 2030s, national Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “Today marks an important milestone for Bradford with a brand-new station that will transform how people travel across the north.” Her statement continued: “By bringing Northern Powerhouse Rail into the heart of the city, we are unlocking the huge potential Bradford offers – improving connections, supporting economic growth and setting the foundations for new homes, jobs and opportunities across the region.”

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire Mayor, Tracy Brabin, pointed to Bradford’s “untapped potential” and predicted that “Faster, more frequent trains to Leeds and Manchester, and the transformation of the city centre through Bradford City Village, will help to finally unleash it.”

The former Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed in January 2026 that NPR would be delivered in three stages, with a funding cap of £45 billion, to be supplemented by local contributions. The station will fall under the newly nationalised Great British Railways (GBR), the single public sector body now tasked for the first time since the nineties with running the majority of rail infrastructure and passenger rail services across the country, alongside devolved and open-access operators.

Although 2026 has been a challenging year for travel, with the conflict in the Middle East disrupting routes and affecting fuel prices, British holidaymakers have shown little inclination to stay at home, according to ABTA’s latest Holiday Habits 2026–27 report.

Based on a survey of 2,082 UK adults, the report found that 88% had taken a holiday in the previous 12 months, matching pre-pandemic levels, while 70% planned to travel abroad over the coming year.

The changes in travel patterns, however, have been “evolutionary rather than revolutionary”, with most shifts amounting to just a few percentage points.

 “Demand has held up well despite a range of challenges this year, and that looks set to continue, as does the willingness to prioritise spending on travel over other discretionary items”, said Mark Tanzer, ABTA’s chief executive.

He noted that beyond the Middle East, Europe’s new Entry/Exit System and climate-related events have also affected people’s travel plans.

But perhaps the biggest change he has observed relates to travellers’ behaviour and purchasing power. 

Holidaymakers are reluctant to sacrifice their trips, with only 7% saying the cost of living would prevent them from going on holiday altogether.

While 50% would cut back on eating out, 38% on leisure activities and 37% on clothes and accessories, only 23% would reduce spending on UK holidays, rising to 32% for holidays abroad.

Once on holiday, however, travellers are also watching their spending, with 21% intending to book cheaper accommodation and 19% planning to eat out less.

Package holidays are enjoying renewed popularity, with 63% of those who travelled abroad booking a one, up two percentage points from last year. Travel agents are also making a comeback, with bookings through travel professionals rising from 34% to 38%. 

Ease of booking (60%), value for money and the reassurance of having someone to turn to when things go wrong are among the main attractions.

Some 32% still plan to spend more on holidays over the coming year, down from 34% last year, though the spending is more a reflection of increased prices rather more travelling.

Europe remained by far the favourite destination, with 84% of overseas holidaymakers, followed by North America (20%), Asia (15%), and Africa (13%).

Although beach holidays remained the favourite among families (57%), city breaks took the overall lead, rising 6 points to 53%, ahead of beach holidays at 49%. Wellness breaks also gained ground, reaching 9% this year.

Cruises remained stable at 13%, but interest in taking one over the coming year has increased to 17%.

The reasons echo those behind the renewed popularity of package holidays. Value for money was cited by 52% of respondents, while 40% appreciated being able to pay essential costs upfront, avoiding unpleasant surprises. 

Cruises are also attracting more families, with 23% of those with children under five having taken one, up 3%. 

All in all, holidays remain a spending priority with British travellers increasingly prepared to cut back on dining out, clothes and other leisure activities than giving up a holiday.

ABTA said that the biometric registration system, which was rolled out from October 2026 and is still causing delays and crowding at border checkpoints, required more work to become “stable and efficient” before it is fully implemented. 

The group acknowledged that the 2,000 travellers questioned in its recent travel habits survey, “aren’t seeing significant delays” due to EES, and only six percent said the EES process had made them much less likely to travel to the EU.

But Abta’s director of public affairs Luke Petherbridge noted less than half the European travel consumers interviewed had been through the system, and warned “we don’t want to see people being deterred. TTG Media has reported him urging the EU to continue the “pragmatic approach” applied so far, adding, “if that means extending contingency measures into next year, then that should happen.”

Next steps identified by Petherbridge in remarks to The Independent “include better triaging of travellers who are already registered and enhancements of the app to enable some checks to be performed prior to arrival.”

Confirmed lists of airports where EES has been suspended to ease operational issues are yet to be issued, but hubs across the Schengen bloc such as Lisbon, Milan, and Brussels, are known to have experienced severe problems and to have adapted protocols to cope. Greece went as far as unilaterally suspending EES for UK arrivals to protect its travel sector. France, the Netherlands, Germany, Malta, Portugal, and Switzerland are also reported by The Times to have been interrupting EES processes beyond the supposed final rollout date, to boost “fluidity.”

The negative effects on airport and airline operations, and on passengers, continue, as underlined in a joint statement from ACI Europe and Airlines for Europe (A4E) just a few days ago. The aviation bodies proposed a six-point action plan to address the “hardships” being inflicted on travellers.

Those anti-EES sentiments have been further amplified by airlines themselves. Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers, Ryanair, has said the ability to temporarily suspend EES should go on into 2027.

Meanwhile, EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, speaking to Politico has emphasised the 230 million entries and exits recorded so far by EES, as well as 80,000 refused arrivals (2,000 due to security concerns, and insisted there would be no more room for flexibility, as members states had “had enough time” to prepare for the system.

Following a series of minor road accidents, recommendations were made to the County Council to ban buses over 12 metres in length from accessing the street, unless they have a special permit. Those restrictions are now set to come into force from 16 October 2026. In addition, “School Keep Clear” markings will be formalised, preventing vehicles from parking in front of the educational establishment between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Andrew Foster, deputy mayor of Burford Town Council, said: “The current situation is untenable – large coaches continue a) to present safety and safeguarding concerns regarding pupils at the primary school, b) to risk repeated damage to the posts segregating the footway from the road.”

And in what appeared to be a thinly veiled criticism of travel and tourism stakeholders who have opposed the move, he went on to call for “prioritising the safety of primary school children over the convenience of tour operators and their clients.”

Burford is not the only Cotswold destination struggling to balance tourist numbers and the visitor economy with local needs. As previously reported by Travel Tomorrow, the village of Bibury, once hailed as the most beautiful in England by poet William Morris, has pleaded with tourists to arrive in smaller vehicles. Attracting up to 20,000 visitors per day in the high season, the village’s narrow roads have often been overwhelmed with the sheer volume of traffic, putting “intolerable and unacceptable pressures” on the 600 residents, according to former chair of the local council, Craig Chapman.

Meanwhile, Bourton-on-the-Water, sometimes described as the “Venice of the Cotswolds”, is working with Cotswold District Council and Gloucestershire County Council to address residents’ concerns over the littering and wear-and-tear caused by “excessive” tourist arrivals (they can reach 75 tourists for every one inhabitant at peak times of the year).

As Harold Goodwin, founder of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) and Managing Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership, has pointed out, restricting vehicle access and providing parking some distance from villages “may be among the only effective ways of reducing the pressures of overtourism.” Yet efforts to protect residents and local infrastructure can sometimes “be perceived as attempts to restrict public access to places that belong to everyone.” What’s more, “enforcement is expensive.” How Burford will continue to manage these tensions going forward remains to be seen.
