London’s Charing Cross and Waterloo East rail stations are set to close for 22 days between 26 July and 16 August 2026 for what operator Southeastern Railway has called a “once-in-a-generation £20 million (€23.5 million) programme of track, platform and structures upgrades.”

An additional closure of the same stations also occurred on the weekend of 18 and 19 July, and people planning trips to and around the United Kingdom capital should also be aware that the stations will be shut again on 22 and 23 August and 10 and 11 October 2026.

Most of the disruption is happening during the UK school summer holidays, at the height of the summer season, hitting visitors and leisure travellers the hardest. The reason for that is that overall passenger numbers are significantly lower in the summer months. Scott Brightwell, train services director for Southeastern, explained that: “By consolidating the work into a 22‑day closure, supported by preparation and follow‑up weekends, we can complete the work more quickly and with less disruption overall than the alternative options of 60 weekend closures or four to five 9-day closures.”

Brightwell added: “Doing the work when schools are closed, and commuter numbers are approximately 20 per cent lower, means we can move people safely and reliably via alternative routes.”

This weekend, there will be no trains from #LondonCharingCross or #LondonWaterlooEast.

During the main three weeks of closure, Southeastern services will be diverted to London Victoria, Cannon Street, Blackfriars, and London Bridge. Paper tickets will be accepted on some alternative routes, and extra staff are being deployed at key stations to assist people with e-tickets that may not be recognised.

Passengers whose journeys are affected can claim a refund for all ticket types, including journeys made using reasonable alternative routes. A form for claiming the refund will be accessible on Southeastern’s website from Sunday, 26 July.

The Network Rail works are intended to bring “essential improvements” in the shape of 1.8 km of new track, which the operator said was “last replaced in the early 1990s and is now increasingly unreliable.” Over 350 hours of delays have been blamed on recent track faults.

Other improvements include better drainage at Waterloo East, platform renewal at Charing Cross and structural safety work on Hungerford Bridge, parts of which were originally built by the legendary English civil and marine engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, in 1841.

Entertainment A-listers and their runs of shows around the country helped to drive the increases. The Oasis comeback tour included 17 gigs performed to full capacity crowds across the UK, with seven at the capital’s Wembley Stadium, and five at the duo’s home venue in Manchester.

Ed Sheeran also did well at his run of homecoming shows in East Anglia, and performances by Beyoncé, Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey were also big tickets over the year.

“Glasto” or Glastonbury Festival attracted 210,000 music lovers to the UK’s southwest over five days in June, drawn by headliners like Neil Young and Charli xcx, and generating record revenue of £75.2m (€86.8m), up from £68.4m in 2024, and pre-tax profits of £7.7 million.

Driven as well by other festivals such as Download and Reading, and the tours and gigs previously mentioned, overall music tourist spending reached £11.2 billion (€13.1 billion), a new high and an 11.3% increase year-on-year.

Music aficionados averaged a spend of £766 (€899) per person on accommodation, clothing, tickets, travel, and sundries. The biggest spend and the biggest increase in spending were seen in London, where music tourists splashed out 27.4% more than in 2024, taking the total to £3.4 billion (€3.99 billion) in 2025. The North West region also saw a healthy uptick in spending, up 15.6% from £1.2 billion (€1.41 billion) in 2024 to £1.4 billion (€1.64 billion) in 2025.

Business Matters highlights the importance of the music events sector for small businesses beyond the venues and producers. Of the £11.2 billion total spend, £5.7 billion was spent directly by consumers on tickets, food and drink, merchandise, travel and room bookings. But another £5.5 billion “flowed through the supply chain,” the outlet said, “from fencing and security contractors to restaurants stocking up for gig weekends.”

With 74,000 full-time equivalent jobs at stake, UK Music chief executive Tom Kiehl said: “The billions spent are a huge shot in the arm for towns and cities right across the UK and benefit hotels, restaurants, bars and transport firms and thousands of other businesses.”

Ian Murray, creative industries minister, said: “These record-breaking figures are a testament to what the UK’s music industry does better than anywhere else in the world.”

The sector however is not without challenges. 43 festivals were cancelled in 2025, meaning music tourism revenue could have been even higher. Work is ongoing by authorities and stakeholders to grow consumer confidence by cracking down on touts and unfair practices by ticketing agencies, and find responses to calls for more support for grassroot venues and the small firms down the supply chain.

The tunnels, which lie beneath the ruins of the White House Glass Cone, date back to the 18^th century and once played an essential role in the region’s world-famous glassmaking industry. They were used to store raw materials, regulate heat and support the production process inside the cone, helping establish Stourbridge as one of Britain’s leading centres of glass manufacturing. 

As part of a major redevelopment project, the museum intends to transform the underground network into a permanent immersive attraction combining virtual reality, projection mapping and animated displays. Visitors will be able to follow more than 400 years of Stourbridge’s glassmaking history, with projections illustrating the entire production process in the very spaces where it once took place.

Although the museum already offers occasional guided tunnel tours, the new project will make the underground passages a permanent part of the visitor experience for the first time. Before opening, the site will undergo a series of health and safety improvements, including upgraded lighting, signage and accessibility measures designed to create what the museum describes as a “safe and free-flowing visitor experience”.

Museum director Alexander Goodger said the development forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen both the museum and the surrounding area.

“This is just one part of our new phase of capital development designed to boost the site for locals, expand the offer, give it a wider appeal and bring in tourists to the area who then go on to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants, regenerating the area,” Goodger said.

He added: “We want to bring in investment for the Black Country’s heritage. We have an incredible and unique history.”

The project also reflects broader ambitions to reinforce the Stourbridge Glass Quarter’s reputation as a centre for industrial heritage and cultural tourism. The museum houses a collection of around 4,000 objects documenting the area’s glassmaking legacy, alongside demonstrations and interactive exhibits celebrating a craft that shaped the region for centuries. 

The tunnels sit beneath the site once occupied by the renowned Stuart Crystal factory, one of England’s best-known manufacturers of cut glass until it closed in 2001. The loss marked part of the wider decline of the traditional Glass Quarter, where four major manufacturers disappeared by the late 1990s and early 2000s. 

The new attraction aims not only to preserve an important chapter of Britain’s industrial past but also to create a distinctive tourism experience capable of attracting visitors to Stourbridge and the wider Black Country.

Since then it has garnered multiple awards, including TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award every year since 2018, a Gold conservation prize for its dedication to preserving habitats that attract insects and birds, and winner of Livestock Building of the Year in 2025 for its “state-of-the-art” aviaries.

Those aviaries house the creatures that perform in The Lost Feather, a free-flying bird show that is one of Kynren flagship experiences, alongside The Trusty Steed, in which medieval knights complete horseback stunts on horseback; Land of the Vikings, a “high-energy live-action Viking show”; the lakeside spectacular Legend of the Wear, and the characterful mazes of the Victorian Imaginariums.

Boasting medieval settlements, and plans for a recreation of a Victorian village, complete with shops, there are already a food court, refreshment kiosks, and a bar on site, as well as feasts offering history-inspired dishes and cocktails.

The day park is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 18 July to 12 September 2026. The park taps into current travel and leisure trends towards the experiential over the material, with one of the most anticipated events of the year in the form of The North East’s Biggest Pyromusical on Saturday 31 October 2026, a 25-minute fireworks display that, organisers promise, will be “a magical, multi-sensory experience lighting up the night skies above Bishop Auckland.”

Despite the focus on immersion not consumerism, Georgian and Viking themed gift shops are also on site, proposing a range of merchandise so that visitors can take away a memento of their time at the attraction.

Until now, passengers arriving on late-night flights or departing on the earliest morning services have often relied on taxis, coaches or private cars once the regular train timetable ended. The new overnight services are intended to provide a more convenient rail alternative during one of the airport’s busiest travel periods. 

The operator of Stansted Express, Greater Anglia, will monitor passenger demand throughout the summer before deciding whether the overnight trains should become a permanent feature of the Stansted Express timetable. 

Welcoming the initiative, Lord Peter Hendy, the UK’s Rail Minister, said: “These overnight Stansted Express services will make a real difference to people arriving late or travelling for early flights – connecting them straight into London via the Night Tube.”

He added: “Alongside contactless ticketing at every London airport, we’re building a railway that works for passengers and drives growth across the country.”

The overnight trains also follow the recent introduction of contactless ticketing across the Stansted Express route, making journeys to and from the airport easier for passengers travelling from London. Tickets for the new services will be valid with Railcards, with the usual discounts applying.

Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s managing director, said: “The overnight trial of Friday Stansted Express services is a welcome development, and one which I’m sure will prove to be popular with airport passengers and staff, providing more choice, convenience and connectivity when accessing the airport.”

The Stansted Express normally operates every 15 minutes during the day between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport. The overnight Friday services represent the first time passengers will be able to travel by train through the night to and from the airport, offering an additional public transport option during the busy summer season.

The “marathon a month” challenge will start in 2027 and see participants logging their walking activity online and via phones and smart wear, with people incentivised to meet the 26-mile (42 km) goal through rewards including sports shopping discounts.

NHS England is initiating the project in partnership with Olympic medallist Sir Brendan Foster, who has form in establishing sporting events such as the Great North Run. The ambition is to attract 100,000 walkers to the scheme.

It is anticipated that doctors and other healthcare workers will also promote the scheme among their patients since it comes in response to research showing that almost 17% of deaths are associated with a sedentary lifestyle, defined as less than 30 minutes of moderate exercise per week. In 2025, around 12 million people were found to fall into that category by a Sport England survey.

Foster has said that reaching 100,000 participants would create the world’s biggest ever marathon, and pointed to the health benefits of even small walks, taken regularly. “If someone walks 30 minutes five times a week, they could gain up to four extra years of healthy life,” he noted.

While Foster has expressed strong belief in the power of digital incentives such as being able to record performance data and streaks, the plan is also to bring public and private sponsors on board, and Techradar has reported that the government is in talks with various high street brands about lending their support.

Guidelines on how to take part in the English scheme are expected to be published in the months to come. For now, though, details about registration and exactly what the rewards might be are yet to be confirmed.

It is also unclear whether the scheme will be nationwide, though that is unlikely since the United Kingdom’s health services are devolved, meaning that Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland develop their own health strategies. In Scotland, where a walking step count challenge has been happening since 2014, participants have clocked up over 66 billion steps.

Increasing the population’s physical activity is a priority for the UK government, which announced in June a plan by the Department for Transport and Active Travel England to ensure at least 60% of children in England are walking or cycling to school within the next 10 years. Less than half (47%) of children aged five to 16 make the journey to school under their own steam, current data reveals.

The policy applies to a small number of aircraft in the airline’s long-haul fleet, including Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners and some Boeing 777-200ERs that were delivered without crew bunk compartments. Until now, cabin crew operating these aircraft took their scheduled rest breaks in curtained-off jump seats located in the galley. 

The change follows discussions between British Airways and the cabin crew union BASSA. According to the airline, crew members will only be permitted to use passenger seats that remain unoccupied after boarding, and no paying customer will be moved to accommodate staff.

A British Airways spokesperson told Simple Flying: “This small change will help ensure our crew colleagues are rested during long-haul flights so they can focus on delivering the premium level of customer service they are renowned for.»

According to a post on Flyer Talk, the new guidance also instructs crew members to use bedding provided for that cabin and to remove or cover visible uniform items while resting.

Dedicated crew rest facilities are common on many long-haul aircraft, but they are optional equipment that airlines can choose not to install. British Airways’ Boeing 787-10 fleet and some of its 777-200ER aircraft were configured without bunks, leaving cabin crew to rest in designated galley seats during scheduled breaks. 

The revised policy has prompted discussion among frequent flyers and aviation observers. Some noticed that it will be surprising to see crew sleeping or taking formal breaks in the same cabin, while others have welcomed the decision as a practical way to improve crew welfare on flights where no proper rest facilities exist. 

“I can’t see an issue with them doing it, the potential problem I see is passengers thinking it’s ok to disturb them if they want something,” one user on the forum commented.

British Airways is also working on a longer-term solution. The airline plans to introduce a “soft block” on selected Economy seats on some Boeing 777s and Boeing 787-10s, reserving them for cabin crew rest when flights are not fully booked. Unlike permanently blocked seats, these seats would remain available for sale and would only be allocated to crew if they remain unoccupied after boarding. According to FlyerTalk Forums, British Airways’ booking systems have yet to be updated to support the new arrangement.

Under UK flight time limitation rules, which were retained from European Union aviation regulations after Brexit, airlines operating long-haul services must provide approved onboard rest facilities for crew. Depending on the planned duty period and fatigue management requirements, these may range from reclining seats to dedicated bunk areas, with the type of facility determined by the length of the operation and regulatory standards.

The new initiative does not alter passenger seating arrangements, as empty premium seats will only be used if they remain unsold and unoccupied after departure. The measure is intended to provide a more suitable rest environment for cabin crew while maintaining normal service for customers.

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched a “Pack right. Safe flight” campaign for the high travel season, warning air passengers not to pack personal items that use lithium batteries in hold luggage but instead to carry them into the cabin where they can be constantly monitored for overheating.

The consequences for placing items with rechargeable lithium batteries, including mobile phones, power banks, and vapes, in hold luggage could be devastating because they pose a “fire risk that could be uncontrollable,” the CAA said.

Though some flyers may think rechargeable devices are low-risk, everyday items, they present a danger of so-called “thermal runaway,” which is an uncontainable chain reaction in a battery where excess internal heat causes exothermic chemical reactions. These reactions in turn generate even more heat and so on in a vicious circle, quickly leading to battery failure, the release of toxic and inflammable gases, and the chance of fires or explosions.

Common causes of overheating include fast charging at high wattages, charging multiple devices simultaneously, poor ventilation, and ageing, damaged, or defective batteries and cables.

The quantity of such equipment that could be on board a crowded Airbus A380 flight could reach into the thousands if each passenger brought along multiple rechargeable items, so the general rule is two devices only per passenger. The devices must also meet certain safety standards, not exceed power limits, and be carried where they can be seen and easily accessed, not packed away in checked hold baggage.

Yet, CAA data reveals more than a third (36%) of travellers are unaware of the dangers of packing batteries in checked baggage, even though 92% fly with a mobile phone, 55% with a laptop and 49% with a power bank – suggesting hundreds of batteries could be incorrectly packed on a typical flight. In 2024, 316 aviation incidents involving lithium battery devices found in hold bags were reported to UK authorities. In 2025, that figure rose to 643, the CAA said.

Giancarlo Buono, the CAA’s director of aviation safety, said: “Flying is by far the safest way to travel, and we want to keep it that way. Pack right for a safe flight, and that means don’t put your batteries in your checked bag. Take them into the cabin with you. This simple tip will make your flight safer for you and the other passengers you’re flying with.”

The safety campaign is supported by a number of airlines and stakeholders, including Virgin, Airlines UK, Airports UK, and Heathrow Airport. Tonya Fielding, Head of Security at the UK’s busiest hub, said: “We’re pleased to be joining forces with the CAA to raise awareness of the dangers posed by incorrectly packed lithium batteries, with the risks still not fully understood by some travellers. As we approach one of the busiest periods of the year, we are working closely with our airline partners to make sure passengers have clear guidance to travel safely and confidence.”

Despite the fact that the building is now very much linked to the late Queen Elizabeth II, even she had to be convinced to move to the Palace instead of staying at the nearby Clarence House by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Yet throughout the years, Buckingham Palace has served as a royal home and as an epicentre of royal business of all kinds.

In 2017, a large-scale refurbishment of the premises was initiated. Ageing electrical installations, lead pipes, and ancient boilers – most of those last changed some 60 years earlier – were causing an increased fire and water damage risk. Ten years and £369 million later, the works should be finished by 2027.

While many thought King Charles III and his spouse Queen Camilla would be moving in after the renovation, the monarch has now officially decided to stay at the close-by Clarence House, where he has been living since 2003. His decision seems to be motivated by two main reasons. First and foremost, the couple, both in their late 70s, are not keen on having to move themselves, their belongings, and their staff. Secondly, Buckingham Palace could thus potentially welcome more visitors throughout the year, and more areas of the building could become open to the public.

Nonetheless, Buckingham Palace will still remain the main location for all official royal business, such as state banquets, audiences, and garden parties. Just like before, King Charles III is thus likely to travel a lot between Clarence House and Buckingham Palace.

“His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life. It will be a buzzing hive of royal activity in every other way,” a palace spokesperson commented.

Moreover, according to James Chalmers, keeper of the Privy Purse, the monarchs will still have access to private rooms within the palace where they can retire during the course of a working day, and which could be utilised as potential residential accommodation in times ahead.

The King’s finances

For the first time in history, the British monarch has also shared a financial account. This shows, among other things, that King Charles III paid £12.9 million in taxes in the 2024-2025 period. The sovereign’s private income comes from the Duchy of Lancaster estate, as well as a collection of holdings and investments.

The accounts also show a boost in the so-called Sovereign Grant (state funding for the monarchy) since 2017 in order to finance the renovation works of Buckingham Palace. For 2027-2028, the Grant will be lowered to £99.9 million, down from £137.9 million during 2026-2027.

However, the core grant will be almost double the amount of the 2024-2025 core grant. The increase is being explained as necessary in order to finance maintenance at occupied royal palaces, to strengthen the royal cybersecurity, and to install energy-efficient heating systems.

Travellers will soon be able to relish the comfort of a new top-notch luxury hotel in the heart of the British capital this autumn, with the opening of the Waldorf Astoria London – Admiralty Arch. The long-awaited 18,580-square-metre property marks the brand’s debut in London, “blending Edwardian grandeur with modern comfort”.

The hotel could hardly be more perfectly situated, occupying Admiralty Arch at the opposite end of The Mall from Buckingham Palace, moments away from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, and minutes from the Royal Opera House. For the first time in its history, the building will welcome overnight hotel guests following a restoration as remarkable as the structure itself: a Grade I-listed monument that has stood at the ceremonial heart of London for over a century.

King Edward VII commissioned the arch in memory of his mother, Queen Victoria, from Sir Aston Webb, the architect who also designed the façade of Buckingham Palace. Completed in 1910, the building served as government offices, including, for a time, the headquarters of the Royal Navy, for more than 100 years before being vacated in 2011.

Guests will be able to choose from 114 rooms, suites and residences, designed to reflect the building’s historic architecture and with names paying tribute to Britain’s History and naval heritage. These include the Nelson Suite, honouring Lord Nelson, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar; the St James’ Residence; and the Victory Residence, named after HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship. Residential and signature suites alone account for more than half of the accommodation space.

Fine-dining fans will be delighted to find two Michelin-starred chefs under one roof: Clare Smyth MBE and Daniel Boulud, whose restaurants together hold seven Michelin stars between them.

Set within the former home of the First Sea Lord, Smyth will open Coreus, a fine-dining concept celebrating Britain’s coastal heritage through sustainably sourced seafood, British produce and seasonal ingredients. The only British woman whose restaurants currently hold four Michelin stars, she will also introduce an intimate Whiskey & Seaweed bar. Boulud, meanwhile, returns to London with Café Boulud, an all-day rooftop restaurant spanning breakfast through to dinner, with sweeping views across St James’s Park and Buckingham Palace.

Gala dinners, weddings and other glamorous events will be celebrated in the roughly 329-square-metre ballroom, presided over by a nine-metre antique Murano chandelier restored in Rome. Guests will descend the building’s original oval staircase to reach it.

A luxurious spa will also be on hand for those in need of unwinding, featuring a sauna, a steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

“Waldorf Astoria London – Admiralty Arch represents a rare convergence of history, place and possibility,” said Dino Michael, senior vice president and category head, Hilton Luxury Brands. He added that opening a building of such cultural and national significance to overnight guests for the first time is “both a privilege and a responsibility”.

Sir Winston Churchill once had offices in the building during his time as First Lord of the Admiralty, and Ian Fleming, the naval intelligence officer who would later create James Bond, also worked there during the Second World War, drawing on the experience for his novels.

The transformation of Admiralty Arch has been developed by the building’s owners, the Reuben Brothers, in partnership with Hilton. Reservations are now open ahead of the hotel’s autumn debut.
