European carriers are increasingly targeting Tanzania as demand grows for adventure tourism and nature-focused travel. New routes are expected to reduce travel times and limit the number of stopovers previously required for visitors heading to Kilimanjaro International Airport, the main gateway for climbers and safari travellers.

Brussels Airlines has added Kilimanjaro to its African network, strengthening connections between Europe and East Africa through its Brussels hub. The airline said the expansion is part of its broader strategy to grow its long-haul presence on the continent, offering more streamlined access for European passengers heading to Tanzania. “Tanzania is a top destination for safaris, and we’re proud to contribute to the local economy by connecting Kilimanjaro to Brussels and beyond,” Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO, Brussels Airlines.

Italian carrier Neos Air is also set to launch seasonal direct flights between Milan Malpensa and Kilimanjaro from 14 July to 20 October 2026, before continuing to Zanzibar. The new route will provide travellers from southern Europe with more non-stop connections to Tanzania, as demand grows for itineraries combining safari experiences, beach holidays, trekking and climbs of Kilimanjaro.

Looking further ahead, Air Tanzania is preparing to enter the European market with a new long-haul link. The airline plans to launch direct flights between London Gatwick and Kilimanjaro International Airport in July 2027, operating at least three times per week. The carrier also intends to connect the UK with Zanzibar, positioning the route as part of a broader expansion aimed at attracting both leisure and diaspora travel between Britain and Tanzania.

For many European travellers, reaching Kilimanjaro has traditionally required multiple connections through hubs in the Middle East or Africa. The addition of more direct services from airlines based in Europe — and now from Tanzania itself — signals a shift toward simpler, more time-efficient travel options.

The improved flight connections to Kilimanjaro are also expected to boost access to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park. The region is home to the annual Great Migration, when more than 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra cross the plains. 

Alongside wildlife highlights, Mount Kilimanjaro, a UNESCO World Heritage site, continues to draw tens of thousands of trekkers each year, with popular routes such as Machame and Marangu offering different approaches to the summit experience.

The improved connectivity is also expected to benefit Tanzania’s tourism economy. The Kilimanjaro region supports a wide network of guides, porters, hotels and safari operators, and Mount Kilimanjaro remains one of Africa’s most visited natural landmarks, drawing climbers from around the world.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Zanzibar government and the Cocoon Collection – a family-founded luxury travel brand that for 40 years has specialised in unique natural locations and local culture. The establishment of the marine reserve means that an island that once belonged to the Eastern Telegraph Company and was an operation station for the underwater cable connecting Zanzibar to the Seychelles and Yemen, will now become a focus of efforts to ensure underwater biodiversity for future generations.

Firm commitment to sustainability

Located just 10km or a 15-minute boat ride from Zanzibar’s capital, Stone Town, the new Changuu-Bawe Marine Conservation Area encompasses the entire coast of Bawe Island. Describing the project’s realisation as “a dream”, it demonstrates the Cocoon Collection’s “firm commitment” to sustainability, according to Attilio Azzola, Founder and Corporate Sales Manager of The Cocoon Collection. By banning fishing, not only is marine life protected, but the natural balance of the ecosystem is promoted, allowing the barrier coral to regenerate and prosper, the company’s website explains.

What’s more, their commitment “goes far beyond the creation of the marine reserve,” Azzola points out. “For years we have been working on several fronts to reduce our impact and enhance the environment that surrounds us.” Those efforts include the installation of solar panels at Gold Zanzibar and, also on Bawe, the creation of the archipelago’s largest solar plant. And over on Prison Island, an “advanced water desalination system is in place, wastewaters are recycled and the century-old turtle population is protected.

Housing and docks for local fishers

Addressing concerns for local fishers around Bawe,  modern and functional houses are being built on the island. The accommodation is allocated with private boat docks, allowing easy access to offshore areas where fishing is authorized, outside the protected area. “This model of coexistence between luxury tourism and sustainable development safeguards local traditions and contributes to the economic well-being of the community,” promotional materials argue.

Visitors meanwhile get over 30 hectares of unspoiled nature and exclusive accommodation in a choice of 70 luxury villas, each with its own private garden, swimming pool and butler service with personal chef. One, the 500^m2 “Sultan Palace”,  spans two levels and can welcome up to nine adult guests.

Visit Seychelles notes that “guests of the resort can easily explore the wonders of Zanzibar, such as the forest of Jozani, ancient Stone Town and Prison Island and sensory spice tours – all of which combine beautifully with the thrill of a safari in Tanzania.”

Margherita Marvasi journalist, resort manager, fashion designer and author, originally from Bologna, Italy, has called Tanzania home for the last two decades. Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean, is not just a place where Marvasi resides – it is where she has woven her life, much like the vibrant fabrics that inspire her designs. 

Home to approximately 1.8 million people, Zanzibar is renowned for its idyllic beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage. Stone Town, or Mji Mkongwe (Swahili for ‘old town’), the old part of the island is a UNESCO world heritage site, where Marvasi resides, it is a unique blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences, inherited from the days the island was a main hub for spices and slavery.

Marvasi discovered her true passions in Zanzibar, reinventing herself time and again against the backdrop of the island’s rich culture and changing tides. She graciously agreed to share her secrets about this magical island, a direct source of inspiration for two of her four novels (the latest one is still in the making).

I’m here on a small boat, fishing dinner, and two whales are having sex in front of me.

Marvasi was at her desk at La Repubblica, where she had just secured a much-prized life contract in Italy’s second-largest newspaper, when her then-boyfriend, also Italian and living in Zanzibar for four years, described this scene to her. She looked around the newsroom and made the decision then and there: she had to go discover this paradise.

A year later it was a done deal and her Zanzibarian adventure, which is still ongoing, began. She immediately fell in love with the people, the beaches and the culture of the place.

Her favourite beaches are the less developed and more “natural” ones such as Jambiani, (“super beautiful”), and Paje on the southeast coast, a hotspot for kite surfers, as well as Bwejuu, perfect for relaxing away from the crowds. In the southern tip of the island, she recommends Kizimkazi, with its dolphin tours, which has retained its natural charm.

For a unique, eco-conscious experience beyond the typical Zanzibar beach scene, one of the hidden gems warmly recommended by Marvasi is Chumbe Island. “It has the best snorkelling ever, where you get to see something like 70% of the whole East African corals, turtles, and seahorses.” In 1991, German social entrepreneur Sibylle Riedmiller founded the Chumbe Island Coral Park (CHICOP), transforming the island into a sanctuary for the coral reef and a forest reserve. No more than 14 people are allowed on the island at the same time. Accommodations are available but quite expensive, however, day trips are available and offer a more affordable alternative.

Kiwengwa, by contrast, is the place for those looking for parties and bars, set along a “still amazing beach, with a no less amazing sea”. Despite heavy tourism and large-scale developments, “This place really is kind of a paradise,” adds Marvasi.

Zanzibar’s beauty comes at a price, as gentrification, heavy tourism, and rapid development threaten its cultural heritage and impact the ecosystem. In 2024, the number of visitors was 20% higher than in 2019. The new airport, opened in 2021, is already incapable of handling the huge numbers of visitors and a fourth terminal is under construction.

Marvasi mentions the declining size of lobsters as an example of the strain on the ecosystem and deplores the ‘Disneyfication’ of Stone Town, where poorly managed restoration projects have replaced historical coral forts with concrete structures. While foreign investments have driven economic growth and job creation, they have also displaced locals and altered the social fabric of the town. “It’s very sad because it’s going to be like a museum. The integrity is changing, the flavours are changing.”

Yet despite these changes, Stone Town’s character as a cultural crossroads remains a source of inspiration for Marvasi, who warmly recommends “to just get lost in the narrow streets and absorb the atmosphere. The place is a melting pot of everything is absolutely gorgeous”.

This deep appreciation for the local culture and craftsmanship is echoed in Magò, the clothing line, she developed in 2004 when she was decorating her resort and searching for fabrics. “I fell in love with African fabrics – kanga and kitenge. They’re so vibrant and full of life,” she recalls. This passion grew into a collaboration with a skilled local tailor, culminating in a boutique in Stone Town. Today, she runs a boutique with two local women, blending traditional African fabrics with modern Italian design to create unique, elegant pieces. 

But ultimately says Marvasi, there is a lot more to Zanzibar than beaches architecture and fashion. For her, the island’s most precious treasure is its people and the deep connection she has built with the local community. 

Looking back on her 20 years in Zanzibar, she says “One of the reasons why I love to come back is that it reminds me there is another way of living”. 

She cites the Swahili phrase ‘Tuko Pamoja’ [We are in this together] that best explains what she feels. “Here, the richness comes from our differences, and the need we have for each other. In Europe, I don’t feel that sense of community. But in Zanzibar, I do.”

This spirit of togetherness continues to inspire her as a woman, a creator, an author, and a designer.

1. Trading culture and wildlife for business

The decision to lease the land to Otterlo, sometimes spelled Ortello, Business Corporation (OBC) was made known to Maasai leaders on 11 January by John Mongella, the regional commissioner for the Arusha region, according to a statement by the Oakland Institute.

The government plans to remove the Maasai from their land at some point this year, even if this decision will be painful to many.

“This local knowledge has been largely credited as allowing the large mammal population and ecological diversity to grow under the stewardship of the Maasai,” Anuradha Mittal, executive director of the Oakland Institute, told Mongabay. “Replacing them with tourists and hunters will likely negatively impact the environment and health of wildlife populations,” said Mittal to Mongabay News.

A Maasai leader who spoke to Mongabay on the condition of anonymity, said that Mongella continuously stressed that leasing the land is in the “national interest” and should therefore also be of priority to the Maasai people.

2. Against international law

Responding to the offensive, Maasai leaders have filed an appeal at a regional court, seeking a halt to the government plans for the area. The natives from northern Tanzania stressed how the renewed attempt to seize the land was a blatant violation of the law, referring to a 2018’s court ruling by the East African Court of Justice, barring the government from evicting Maasai communities in a case that involved violent evictions.

Maasai leaders were told by the regional commissioner that the leasing of the land is in the national interest, to increase the country’s tourism revenue, and that it was a tough decision for the government to make.

3. Relocations

Evicted residents from the region of Loliondo will be relocated to the neighbouring Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where they will join another 80,000 evicted Maasai to share a strip of land designated for humans and wildlife.

A Maasai activist and community representative, who requested anonymity, has appealed to the Tanzanian government to put a stop to its plans to evict communities and wait until the court case is concluded.

“The myth of protected areas takes away not only our rights as people but our ability to exercise our responsibilities related to land,” the leader said as he appealed for international support on behalf of his community, noting that Tanzania is a signatory to the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The US organisation promoting global activism on social issues, Avaaz, is collecting signatures trying to stop the Maasai evictions. The petition has already reached nearly 3 billion signatories and it will be presented to the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

With 70 floors, the commercial tower christened Zanzibar Domino is to be built 15 kilometers from Stone Town, which is classified as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Zanzibar Domino will involve the creation of an artificial island and a marina for yachts and cruise ships.

Famous for its turquoise waters and spice plantations, Zanzibar relies heavily on tourism, a sector hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. Zanzibar’s Minister of State and Labor, Economy and Investment Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga told media that the project will strengthen “the government’s efforts to attract more local and foreign investors to the islands.” The minister also said the project is meant to help build a blue economy.

The project will be developed by a joint venture of Tanzanian AICL Group and Edinburgh Crowland Management Ltd which has signed a contract with the New York and Dubai-based design architect company, xCassia. The tower will house apartments, luxury hotels, a golf course and a chapel for weddings.

Design director and xCassia founder Jean-Paul Cassia says the idea for the project has been in discussion for nearly 15 years, adding that environmental assessments, budgeting and accessing infrastructure were all essential to ensuring that the project would be successful. He said he had dreamed of building this project for more than a decade.

It has all the ingredients of an icon that everyone will remember. It just needed a visionary investor and a suitable location to make it a reality
