More than 1,700 passengers and crew had initially been asked to remain onboard as a precaution after dozens of people reported gastrointestinal symptoms. The ship, carrying 1,233 passengers, mainly from the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as 514 crew members, arrived in the French port on 13 May and was held there pending the outcome of medical tests.

At the peak of the situation, around 80 individuals experienced stomach-related symptoms, with the highest number of cases reported while the ship was docked in Brest earlier in the week.

Mild viral infection confirmed, norovirus ruled out

French health authorities have since clarified that the situation is under control. The illness affecting passengers has been identified as a mild viral infection with no serious consequences reported.

Initial concerns pointed to a possible outbreak of norovirus, a highly contagious form of gastroenteritis commonly associated with cruise ships. However, tests ruled this out, and further investigations are ongoing. Food poisoning has not been excluded as a possible cause.

Passengers showing symptoms have been instructed to isolate in their cabins, while those without symptoms have now been allowed to leave the vessel.

Death of elderly passenger unrelated

The incident was further complicated by the death of an elderly passenger during the voyage. Authorities confirmed that the 92-year-old man died of a heart attack before the ship reached Brest, and that his death is unrelated to the gastrointestinal illnesses reported onboard.

Earlier reports had raised concerns about a possible link between the death and the outbreak, but this has since been dismissed.

No link to hantavirus cases on other vessels

The situation also prompted comparisons with a separate health incident involving the MV Hondius, where a suspected hantavirus cluster had been reported after a voyage departing Argentina. French health officials stressed that there is no connection between the two cases.

While gastrointestinal infections such as gastroenteritis are relatively common and typically mild, hantavirus is rare and significantly more severe.

During the confinement period in Bordeaux, enhanced sanitation measures were implemented across the ship. These included intensified cleaning protocols, assisted service in dining areas, and reinforced hygiene guidance for passengers and crew, such as regular handwashing and prompt reporting of symptoms.

In a statement, the cruise operator said it had implemented health and safety protocols in line with public health procedures and was working closely with local authorities.

The Ambition, which departed from the Shetland Islands on 6 May and called at Belfast and Liverpool before arriving in France, is expected to resume its itinerary towards Spain once clearance is granted.

Despite his already impressive track record, Yannick Alléno is not about to slow down.

“I pursued this profession to give others pleasure and happiness. I love opening a good bottle of wine with friends, and, like everyone, I’ll make a roast chicken or put a leg of lamb in the oven. I’m just beginning my career,” Alléno told CNN Travel.

Over the course of 2026, the French chef has several new projects in the pipeline. Not only is he in charge of the newly opened COMO Le Beauvallon in Saint-Tropez, but he has also been appointed as the executive chef of the new Orient Express Corinthian. Aboard the world’s largest sailing yacht, Alléno will be overseeing no less than five restaurants.

Under its current guise, the group has been around for over two decades, bearing the name of its founding members since its creation in 2004, despite talk at the time of the original merger of a new, more neutral moniker, such as French European Airlines.

With consolidation rife in aviation—and accelerating as airlines face rising costs amid the Middle East fuel crisis—SAS is not the only airline that Air France-KLM has its eyes on. The long-awaited privatisation of TAP could also see the group win out over rival Lufthansa to embrace the Portuguese carrier into the fold. With two takeovers in mind then, plus a 19.9% stake in Scandinavia’s SAS already, as well as stakes in several other airlines, including Air Corsica, Kenya Airways and WestJet, a name with international associations would better reflect the group’s makeup.

A spokesperson said, “It is perfectly logical to hold the discussion about a new name, given that we plan to add new brands to the Air France-KLM Group. After all, the current name only reflects our two historical brands.”

The name “the Blue Group” is being mooted, according to people with knowledge of the issue who spoke to De Telegraaf. The colour is already a main element in the image of both Air France, KLM, and SAS.CEO Ben Smith is said to be in favour of a change of identity, though insiders have reported that other members of senior management are not enamoured with any name change or loss of Air France-KLM branding, calling it “a heavy step.”

Some are sceptical about the name change being a precursor to operational changes that would see the group run from Paris, with sub-brands losing autonomy. Annual reporting also shows this has effectively already happened to KLM subsidiary AirTrade, a package operator for KLM and Transavia, now owned and run by the Paris holding. In 2025, KLM’s Adriaan den Heijer was subsumed into the Paris holding group as chief commercial officer, alongside COO Oltion Carkaxhija.

The new “unbranded” name could follow the lead of British Airways and Iberia’s  International Airlines Group (IAG) in eliminating associations with dominant carrier energy, though it remains unclear how Portuguese authorities would view any such move, since retention of national interests has been such a key part of acquisition negotiations.

During the ceremony, which included an aerial salute by four Fouga Magister jets flying the French tricolour and the hoisting of three SolidSails, Laurent Castaing, chief executive of CdA, reminded the crowd that his company has been building “ships that define their era for more than one hundred and sixty years”. He also paid tribute “to the men and women of exceptional dedication and passion who made this achievement possible. To them I owe this humble pride”.

Sébastien Bazin, Accor’s chairman and chief executive, shared these sentiments, stating that the vessel “showcases the very best of French expertise and craftsmanship”. He added that bringing the Orient Express to the sea “fits naturally within the imagination of this legendary brand: a journey rooted in discovery, unhurried time, excellence, and elegance”.

The ship’s interiors evoke the golden age of grand travel, in line with the brand’s association with 1920s Art Deco glamour. They were conceived by Maxime d’Angeac, the architect and creative director of Orient Express.

Almost 2,000 craftsmen, artists and workshops contributed to bringing his vision to life. The reference point throughout is the SS Normandie, which was built in the same shipyard in the 1930s. Among the most striking features are three monumental bas-relief panels inspired by 1930s lacquerwork, each of which took a full year to complete.

Accommodating 110 guests, the ship has 54 suites ranging from 45 to 230 square metres, spread over four decks. Each suite features a 3.6-metre panoramic window and ceiling heights 25 centimetres higher than industry standards. Suites are furnished with leather, wood veneer and marble. Each suite comes with its own dedicated butler service.

Passengers can choose from five restaurants and private dining rooms overseen by the multi-Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno. He describes the ship as “travel in its noblest essence” and sees it as the perfect home for his culinary vision.

After dinner, guests can enjoy eight bars, including an Art Deco speakeasy, a 115-seat cabaret and even a recording studio. After a lavish dinner and after-party, guests can unwind at the Guerlain spa before heading to the pool or the marina.

However, the ambition goes beyond aesthetics. In Castaing’s words, the Corinthian is “the fruit of ten years of research and development”. It is the first ship of its size to be powered primarily by wind. Its three rigid SolidSail units rotate automatically to capture wind from any direction, and its tilting masts allow it to pass beneath major bridges.

During sea trials in February 2026, the ship reached 12 knots under wind power alone – a first for a vessel of this size. A hybrid liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion system provides backup power when needed.

“It is a concrete technical response to the decarbonisation challenges facing maritime transport,” said Castaing.

Itineraries in the Mediterranean and Adriatic run from May to October 2026, after which the ship will cross the Atlantic and spend the winter in the Caribbean. Voyages range from one to four nights and are fully inclusive, with prices starting at €17,700 in July.

A sister vessel, the Orient Express Olympian, is currently being fitted out in Saint-Nazaire and is scheduled to set sail in 2027.

The cost to passengers is yet to be announced, but children under the age of 16 accompanied by adults will benefit from free trips, and Parisian residents in possession of a Navigo card (a personal and nominative card giving access to discounts) should travel for 30 to 40% less than visitors to the Île-de-France region.

While New Yorkers are bracing for aerial ride-hailing around their home city, some Parisians and tourists are looking forward in addition to the opening of a new pedestrian tunnel connecting the afore-mentioned train hubs, Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est.

Both in the 10^th arrondissement, near iconic landmarks such as Place de la République and the canal St Martin (made famous by the film Amélie Poulain), the two large cardinal point stations are in fact only half a kilometre apart, but the nearly 800,000 passengers per day they handle can find it hard to navigate between them.

According to the government transport authority Ile de France Mobilités, a public consultation project in 2023 found participants complaining of “the many noise and olfactory nuisances that they suffer daily in this space,” and “in favour of the establishment of a new balance that gives priority to pedestrians and bicycles over two-wheelers and cars.” Better signage is also planned.

Critics have questioned the cost-effectiveness of the tunnel, which is being excavated by hand and jackhammers rather than using a large tunnel-boring machine because of existing infrastructure limitations. Nonetheless, the underground walkway is set to open in the first half of 2027, coinciding with the inauguration of the CDG Express. Whether well-to-do Parisians will be persuaded to use the subway link in a district that was long-considered louche remains to be seen.

And in another development for Paris, a new metro line, number 17, is in the pipeline, set to link Saint-Denis to Charles de Gaulle Airport by 2027, and the airport to the exhibition and conference centre “Parc des Expositions” in 2028.

Music events drive travel, this much we know after the worldwide economic phenomenon that was Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. Swift’s 2024 global run of shows broke records as the first to gross $2 billion (€1.7 billion). Fans sought to find available tickets and combine the gig of a lifetime with a bucket list trip, in line with documented travel and leisure trends that show a growing consumer taste for experiencing a live show in a special place.

Celine Dion’s 16-date run in Paris’ La Défense Arena in September and October 2026 looks set to be no exception. Since it was announced in March, accommodation providers in the City of Lights have reported a surge in interest. Hotel brand Adagio, which boasts 10 hotels in the La Défense district alone, has seen a 400% rise in bookings, and Booking.com reports a 49% spike in “Paris” searches.

Overall, it could add up to a whopping injection of revenues. The president of business and destination agency, Choose Paris Region, Alexandra Dublanche told AFP stakeholders are anticipating a Dion-shaped uplift to the regional economy of between €300 and €500 million, while MKG analyst Vanguelis Panayotis, said “the Dion effect” could be worth more than a billion. “The economic benefits could reach €1.2 billion if taking into account transportation, and all the associated expenses and logistics of Dion’s support team as well as fans,” Panayotis explained.

Paris is not usually short on visitors. The city (and country) is consistently one of the most-touristed in Europe and the world, and even as a destination accustomed to the limelight and designed with wide Haussmanian avenues, it has suffered its own problems with overtourism, including an emergency shutdown by overwhelmed staff at the Louvre art museum. As a bilingual francophone and anglophone, Dion enjoys a special relationship with France, Paris and, indeed, the Eiffel Tower. Now, with the fall tour drawing closer, as the song declares, those who love each other shall be reunited, much to the joy of the travel sector.

After all, good food, like a good novel, carries both history and soul.

France’s cheeses are perhaps the most eloquent expression of this idea. With this in mind, the itinerary goes far beyond tasting platters. Travellers will make cheese by hand on a goat farm, observe traditional methods in family-run dairies and visit ageing caves where wheels of cheese mature quietly for months or even years.

The journey begins in Honfleur, in Normandy, where Camembert, Pont-l’Évêque and Livarot take centre stage, their creamy, sometimes pungent profiles paired with the region’s apple brandy during a visit to a Calvados distillery. If time allows, the Norman leg of the journey ends in Beuvron-en-Auge, one of France’s officially listed “Most Beautiful Villages”, with its timbered façades and postcard charm.

By the time you reach Burgundy, your palate will be both educated and perhaps slightly overwhelmed. Here, indulgence slows down as you enter the revered Côte d’Or. Brillat-Savarin, a decadent triple crème cheese, Morbier with its distinctive ash line and the lesser-known Nuiton are paired with Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and the sharper, more mineral-rich Chablis from the northern vineyards. Guests then retreat to a five-star spa hotel in Beaune. Because recovery is no less important than discovery.

Visitors will also explore some of Burgundy’s historic wine cellars, where tastings come with generous pours of history, though at this stage, one might forgive the occasional lapse in concentration regarding dukes, canons or kings.

No such tour would be complete without Paris. A final “cheese” moment by the Eiffel Tower precedes a workshop at a dedicated cheese school (yes, it is a thing), followed, naturally, by yet another cellar visit. There is also a cheese museum for the culturally inclined, and for the romantics, a farewell dinner cruise on the Seine at sunset.

All this comes at a price, from €4,850 per person. But, as the French say, quand on aime, on ne compte pas. And for those still hesitating, some scientists suggest cheese may even help reduce the risk of dementia. A final reason, perhaps, to say yes to one more slice.

French auction house Artcurial will sell a section of the monument’s original spiral staircase on 21 May, with estimates suggesting it could fetch between €40,000 and €50,000. The iron structure, dating back to 1889, was designed under the supervision of engineer Gustave Eiffel and once connected the tower’s second and third floors. 

The piece measures around 8.5 feet (about 2.75 metres) in height and includes 14 steps made of riveted steel, forming part of the staircase that originally allowed visitors to climb to the top of the tower before elevators were introduced.

The staircase was dismantled in 1983 during modernisation works and divided into 24 sections. Some of these segments remain in Paris, including pieces presented at the Musée d’Orsay, La Villette, Iron Museum in Jarville-la-Malgrange, while others have been dispersed globally, ending up in Japan and the United States.

The section now heading to auction has been in private hands for more than four decades. According to Artcurial specialist Sabrina Dolla, the anonymous owner is selling because “he’s enjoyed it long enough” and “now his circumstances are taking him elsewhere.” 

Despite its relatively modest estimate, previous sales of similar staircase fragments have achieved significantly higher prices. Over the years, Artcurial has sold several, including an 11.5-foot segment for €212,458 in 2013, a record-setting €523,800 sale in 2016, a 14-foot section for €162,500 in 2018, and another 8.5-foot piece for €253,500 in 2020.

With $60 billion being invested in Disney’s cruises, parks, and resorts worldwide, the Paris development is the centrepiece of a two-billion-euro transformation at EuroDisney, which is being rebranded “Disney Adventure World” to showcase the company’s renewed focus on immersive storytelling.

World of Frozen aspires to bring together gripping narratives, technology, and atmosphere, and boasts a version of the brand’s Frozen Ever After touring attraction, as well as a themed restaurant and a stage show. For D’Amaro, the Frozen opening is a chance to underscore his new position as CEO, having successfully steered Disney’s Parks and Experiences to 57% of the division’s operating income in 2025. “We continue to dream bigger and bring stories to life in brand new ways,” D’Amaro told attendees at the launch. 

The new attractions sit alongside other refreshed offers across the park, including a “teacup-style” spinning ride with colourful boats and lanterns inspired by Tangled, and a The Lion King-themed land.

Disneyland Paris has recorded a total of 445 million visits since opening in 1992, underscoring its enduring popularity. Emmanuel Macron stated that the new development project is expected to create an additional 1,000 jobs, reinforcing the resort’s economic impact. After visiting the park with dignitaries, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, agreed, hailing the Paris site as “Europe’s leading tourist destination and most visited theme park,” praising its business model and role as a major employer and tourism hub. 

The park is significant, Tzitzikostas said in a statement on X, because “it helps stabilise the tourism industry beyond peak seasons and today generates around 6% of France’s total tourism revenue. This new €2 billion investment will create thousands of jobs and further strengthen Europe’s tourism sector, alongside a strong commitment to sustainable tourism practices.”

Meanwhile, initial reviews have been mixed, with early visitors finding hiccups such as a closed restaurant, others praising the visitor immersion, and many noting the ongoing appeal of the Frozen franchise: “Frozen IP is so popular I don’t see any slow crowds for this until Lion King opens,” said VanillaNL on a Reddit thread dedicated to the attraction.

The design of Marguerite takes inspiration from the daisy flower, called “marguerite” in French, which grows widely in the Burgundy countryside. This influence can be seen in the soft yellow tones, floral patterns, and light-filled interiors found throughout the boat. Decorative elements such as stained glass and handcrafted furniture have been created by French artisans, bringing local craftsmanship on board. These details are combined with modern design choices, including clean lines and natural materials, to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. The result is a space that feels both contemporary and closely connected to the region’s cultural heritage. 

Marguerite is designed to host a small number of guests, accommodating up to eight people at a time. There are four cabins, each with a private bathroom, offering comfort and privacy for those on board. Large windows in the cabins allow guests to enjoy views of the passing landscapes during the day, while the interiors are designed to promote rest at night. The boat also includes an open-plan salon and a dining area where guests can gather. Outside, a spacious deck features an area for outdoor dining as well as a heated plunge pool, allowing travellers to relax while surrounded by the scenery of the Burgundy waterways.

Dining is a central part of the experience, with menus created by Dominique Crenn, a French chef awarded three Michelin stars. Meals are prepared on board by a private chef using fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from the region. Guests can start their day with pastries, coffee, and other breakfast options before enjoying lunches and dinners inspired by local cuisine. Dining can take place inside or on the deck, depending on the weather and mood. This approach gives travellers the opportunity to discover Burgundy’s food culture in a relaxed and personal setting.

The itineraries are flexible and can be adapted to suit the interests of each group. Experiences include wine tastings along the Route des Grands Crus, which is a famous wine route known for its vineyards and high-quality wines. Guests can visit well-known wine estates as well as smaller, family-run producers. Other activities include cycling through the countryside, guided cultural visits, and a mustard-making workshop in Dijon, a city famous for this traditional product. Private lunches at historic locations, such as castles in Vougeot, can also be arranged, offering a deeper insight into the region’s history and traditions.

Marguerite is part of the “Les Bateaux Belmond” fleet, which includes several other boats operating across France in regions such as Bordeaux and Provence. Unlike large cruise ships, these vessels offer a more intimate experience, focusing on small groups and personalised service. The journey is offered as a private charter, meaning the entire boat is reserved for one group, whether it is a family or a group of friends. Prices start from around €85,100 per week, depending on the itinerary and services selected.
