On 23 July 2026, the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation organised the 20^th edition of its Spirited Awards. Since its start in 2007, the competition has been recognising beverage professionals, products, establishments, journalists, and media across every facet of the spirits and cocktail industry on a global scale. The categories include Bartender of the Year, Best Bar Team, and Best New Spirit or Cocktail Ingredient.

This year, the winner of the ‘Best New International Cocktail Bar’ category was De Vie. Located in the Montorgueil neighbourhood in Paris, the bar opened its doors in 2025 and has been gaining international attention ever since. For example, it came out 34^th in Europe’s 50 Best Bars list in June 2026 and was named Cocktail Bar of the Year by Time Out in 2025.

De Vie is the brainchild of Alex Francis and Barney O’Kane, who have been active on the Parisian culinary scene for a while. In 2025, they opened their new three-story concept in Montorgueil, featuring a fine dining restaurant called Comptoir De Vie, a wine cellar called Cave De Vie, and an underground cocktail bar named Bar De Vie with room for just 11 people at a time.

“Bar & Comptoir De Vie is a multiple concept space, home to a hyper-seasonal tasting & seasonal à la carte menu utilising the best of French produce. The experience centres on our seasonal drinks menu that is available with & without alcohol, featuring a selection of cocktails and sustainably made specialty drinks such as fruit wines, digestifs, and aperitifs upcycling waste ingredients from the kitchen and bar,” De Vie explains on its website.

The cocktail bar stands out from the crowd thanks to its unusual approach to cocktails, which is reminiscent of local produce-oriented fine dining. The menu changes almost daily, drinks often centre around one particular fruit or vegetable, and local ingredients stand centre-stage.

De Vie’s principal feature is a 5-step seasonal drinks tasting menu over a 1h30 seating, which includes snacks. Additional a la carte dishes are available against a supplement. Each drink is served in a tasting portion to ensure consumption is both enjoyable and responsible. At the end of the tasting session, customers will have had the equivalent of 3 standard cocktails to drink, while an entirely non alcoholic option is also available.

For the so-called Omakase Tasting Menu, customers will have to pay €50 per person. Although the available drinks change on an (almost) daily basis, some of the featured options on De Vie’s sample menu include Beetroot (beetroot molasses eau de vie, wild raspberry eau de vie, and dry vermouth) and Fennel (fennel leaf cordial, clarified apple juice, and fermented fennel stem brine).

Bookings are open two months in advance, and a deposit of €30 per person is required to secure the seats. The amount will be subtracted from the final bill and is refundable, provided reservations are cancelled with no less than 48 hours’ notice.

The first-ever title of Europe’s Best Bar went to Line in Athens. Located inside a former art warehouse, the venue has become known for combining innovative cocktails with sustainability. Rather than discarding leftover ingredients, the team reuses by-products to create drinks such as the Delusional Margarita, made with ketchup, mustard and potato water, and the Why-Ins, prepared with every fruit except grapes. Athens dominated the inaugural edition of the ranking, with The Bar in Front of the Bar taking second place, while Barro Negro, Baba au Rum and The Clumsies also secured spots on the list.

London was named Europe’s Cocktail Capital after recording the highest number of entries in the ranking. Eight bars from the British capital were recognised, led by Connaught Bar, which placed 10^th overall. Other London venues included Satan’s Whiskers, Tayēr + Elementary, Waltz, Kwãnt Mayfair, Three Sheets (Soho) and Scarfes Bar. Together, they reflect the city’s wide range of cocktail experiences, from luxury hotel bars to neighbourhood favourites and modern experimental venues.

The ranking also demonstrates that some of Europe’s most exciting cocktail destinations are found beyond the continent’s traditional capitals. Mirror Bar in Bratislava reached eighth place, while Nouvelle Vague in Tirana ranked 16^th. Cities including Krakow, Prague, Zurich, Thessaloniki and Innsbruck also earned places, showing that travellers can discover award-winning bars in destinations that are often overlooked for cocktail culture. Barcelona, Paris and Milan also performed strongly, with several venues from each city appearing throughout the ranking.

Another noticeable trend is the variety of buildings that now house Europe’s leading cocktail bars. Panda & Sons in Edinburgh is hidden behind the façade of a traditional barbershop, while Svanen in Oslo occupies a beautifully preserved pharmacy dating back to 1896. In Rome, Freni e Frizioni welcomes guests inside a former mechanic’s workshop. Many venues also place sustainability at the centre of their concept by using seasonal local ingredients, reducing waste and finding creative ways to reuse products that would otherwise be discarded.

The British are reputedly fond of queuing and have an attachment to the etiquette of waiting one’s turn, growing (perhaps silently) enraged if someone cuts in front of them while standing in line. But the great British pub was one of the few places where, until now, a different type of queuing reigned.

At the pub bar, it is customary to adopt a position beside the person who was there before, taking up all the room sideways along the bar until there is none left, at which point, a second row of thirsty clientele can form. Although the position (beside instead of behind) might have changed, other aspects of queuing manners always remained intact in the pub. It’s important to be aware of who was there before you and let them order first if possible. That is, until rush hour really kicks in, at which point it can become more of a free-for-all. Still, often British bar staff retain an uncanny awareness of who should be served next, no matter how busy it gets.

In a new twist, though, bar customers are insisting on queuing one behind the other. The trend is so big that it has its own presence on X, where the account @queuespub, the page has over 14,000 followers, and campaigns “to end the recent phenomenon of queuing single file in pubs. We queue for the bus, or for the checkout, not at bars.”

While some drinkers, pub owners, and bar staff have criticised the formation of long single file queues as a waste of valuable time and space that ruins the cosy pub atmosphere, others have pegged the new behaviour as a long-COVID symptom. Dougal Sharp, founder and master brewer at Innis & Gunn, told Metro about “single file lines forming in taprooms in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and it’s mostly Gen-Z customers who queue like this as they don’t know any better.” Others say they started witnessing single-file queues in pubs as far back as 2015 (which is just as Gen Z started turning 18 and hitting legal drinking age in the UK). It might also be the result of inexperienced bar staff being unable to cope with horizontal queues.

Other industry voices note the tough economic context for pub landlords. 2025 saw at least one pub closure every day, making the idea of any queue, whether at the bar or out the door, a welcome one. The outlook has been so bleak that the UK government has recently put in place a business rates package to support publicans against what Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, has called “the immediate financial threat.”

So, how should one best support one’s local and try to get served in a British boozer? Ginjourney blog calls the single-file queues a “heinous act” and points out that good bar staff can cut through even seeming chaos at the bar as they are trained to spot the next punter.

Customers can also help themselves, the blog says, by approaching the nearest available space at the bar and developing their “bar presence,” which involves smiling, making eye contact, and even some small talk. Avoid waving money at bar staff, whistling, saying “Oi,” or clicking fingers at bartenders, the blog advises. Wise words.

The real problem arises when one arrives in third or fourth place at a queue that has already formed in a single file. To ignore the precedent and go straight up to the bar could risk the wrath of some terribly angry British Gen Zs. So, the question is: just how badly do you want that pint?

Despite the age limit, the rule is flexible. Groups are admitted if at least one member is under 40, and friends or family of staff, as well as business partners, can enter regardless of age. Customers over 40 may also request entry if they are comfortable with the pub’s lively atmosphere. “If the customer has the mentality of ‘I’m older than 40, but I have the spirit of a 20-something,’ then they’re welcome,” Nagano said.

The restriction is not legally enforceable under Japanese law, which does not permit businesses to refuse service solely based on age above a set limit. However, social norms in Japan generally discourage guests from arguing over such rules, meaning the practical effect for many is similar to a ban. 

The new policy has sparked online debate. Some commentators supported the measure, saying it reduces stress for staff and customers and encourages older customers to seek higher-end establishments. Others criticised it as discriminatory, highlighting that physical age does not always match energy or social preference.  

Several comments linked the issue to Japan’s “employment ice age generation,” a term for adults who entered the workforce between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s during Japan’s prolonged economic stagnation. With hiring freezes, lower starting salaries, and limited career advancement opportunities, many in this generation struggled financially compared to previous generations. As a result, some adults over 40 still look for affordable entertainment and dining options, including casual izakayas like Tori Yaro, making the upper-age restriction a point of contention for this group. 

In contrast, another Shibuya izakaya, Yaoya Ba, enforces a minimum age of 25, saying the rule helps create a calmer dining environment for adult customers, alienated by the district’s noisy drinking scene. “We want adults to enjoy their meal without worrying about anything,” said manager Masayuki Segawa. Customers in their 30s have welcomed the policy, noting it allows normal conversation without shouting over a crowded room.

Similar informal age limits are common in nightlife districts across Asia. In Seoul’s Hongdae area, some clubs turn away patrons over 30, while certain cafés and sports facilities enforce “no seniors zones” for those over 70. Tori Yaro’s policy appears to formalise a trend that already exists informally in urban nightlife across the region. For travellers, the developments highlight the need to research local nightlife before visiting. While some venues may post explicit age restrictions, many others operate without them, allowing visitors of all ages to enjoy Tokyo’s vibrant night scene.

The Three Jingle Bells

Part of the transformation includes the opening of what the owners call the world’s smallest pub – featuring a bar, two taps serving Camden Town Brewery beers, and three seats. The Three Jingle Bells, as the pub is called, takes guests on a green-and-red coloured nostalgic trip to the past, including vintage-looking Christmas posters and festive decorations.

Curious-minded drinkers are welcome to walk in or can book the bar beforehand between Thursdays and Saturdays for a 45-minute time slot, given they provide a £10 holding fee per person.

However, as the pub is in fact a part of Flat Iron Square’s larger bar, those who do not manage to grab a seat can simply have their drink there or somewhere else throughout the yard. The Flat Iron Square food court, aka Yuletide Yard, will be organising a range of themed events throughout December, including a Michael Bublé tribute act, karaoke, DJs, and speed-quizzing sessions.

The on-site food offer, too, will be undergoing a temporary makeover. Diners can expect all kinds of festive flavours, including a sausage-and-Brussels-sprouts pizza, a chicken-red-cabbage-cranberry wrap, and a Christmas burger with potato röstis, chestnuts, and crispy chicken. In its turn, the drinks menu will include a couple of Camden Town Brewery’s seasonal specials, Little Moons mochi cocktails, and Jameson’s Irish Coffee winter warmers.

An expected yet surprising winner

The winner of them all turns out to be an Italian hub in Hong Kong, called Bar Leone. After having secured the number one spot in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2024 and 2025 lists, the old-fashioned-looking bar was able to take home the international award. At Bar Leone, the concept of ‘cocktail popolari’ stands central, bringing cocktails but also coffee and football to Hong Kong in the form of a Roman neighbourhood bar.

“Today is a special day. Getting this recognition in home, in Hong Kong, to share it with these friends is special. There are so many bars around the world that deserve to be in this list, we are so honoured. It’s about working day-by-day and putting our heart and soul into it. Bar Leone was born with the idea of being a neighbourhood cocktail bar. We will never changes that ethos. We will never change our identity”, Rome-born co-founder of Bar Leone Lorenzo Antinori said after having received the award.

1. Gardners Inn, New South Wales, Australia

What’s more, comfort levels are being boosted by a current upgrade to its guest facilities. It might look more frontier-town-stopover than cosy pub from the outside, but on the inside, Chesterfield sofas, real fireplaces, and some of the best Beef and Guinness pies known to humankind await.

2. The Pelican Inn, Muir Beach, California, US

3. The Black Horse London Pub, San Francisco, California, US

If there’s no time in the schedule to head up the California coast towards The Pelican, pay a visit instead to The Black Horse London Pub, the smallest bar in San Francisco. Holding only around 10-12 people, its diminutive size is not the only reason the place is cosy. Charismatic owner, James King, has banned mobile phones, ensuring friendly pub banter among his clientele. What’s more, Joseph Piercy, British author of Slippery Tipples, A Guide to Wonderful Spirits and Liqueurs, told Travel Tomorrow about the ice-filled bathtub which holds the bar’s stock of canned and bottled beer, and a “Wheel of Misfortune” pub game, involving “a large colour wheel pinned to the wall. Everyone in the bar is assigned a colour and should your colour come up when you spin the wheel you are obliged to buy drinks for the house.”

4. O’Donoghue’s, Dublin, Eire

Despite a shared name, this author has no affiliation with this establishment other than fond memories of cosy afternoon visits. Only minutes on foot from Trinity College grounds and St Stephen’s Green, there’s a spit-and-sawdust kind of magic here; the dark interior glimmers with mirrors and memorabilia, and comes alive every night thanks to a non-stop schedule of live Irish music. Expect small round tables, red faux leather banquettes, Guinness galore, and a barrel-furnished courtyard where locals and tourists stand side by side.

5. Pivovarská nalévárna v Soukenické, Prague, Czechia

Tucked into a back street just a 10 minute walk from the Powder Tower historic city gates, this small and unpretentious bar and eatery is simply furnished with wood tables and chairs, boasts beers that locals say you won’t find anywhere else, and offers tasty plates of simple Czech pub grub, such as nakládaný hermelín (marinated cheese) or, as I discovered, intimidatingly huge portions of pork knuckle as tender as a peach, served only with bread (because I arrived a little late in the evening) and a very jolly welcome.

6. Mimayusa, 2-15 Kandatsukasamachi, Chiyoda 1, Tokyo, Japan

Situated about 15 minutes on foot from the book district Jimbochu (recently named one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods), and with claims to be the oldest pub in Japan at over a century old, this izakaya or traditional Japanese tavern “needs a bit of upkeep” according to some reviews. Do not let that deter a visit.

The sudden announcement of the pub’s closure has come as a shock to many. The current owners cited escalating financial challenges as the primary reason for this difficult decision. In a heartfelt message to the community, they expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support over the years:

Like many beloved pubs across the country, we’ve faced increasing financial challenges that have made it difficult to continue operating. While this marks the end of an era for us, we are incredibly grateful for the memories we’ve shared and the wonderful community we’ve been privileged to be a part of.

The closure has elicited an outpouring of emotion from the local community. Residents have taken to social media to share their memories and lament the loss of a cherished gathering spot. One local patron remarked, “Friday nights won’t be the same without The Abbot’s Fireside.” 

The pub has not only been a place to enjoy a pint but also a venue for community events, celebrations, and a symbol of local heritage. Its absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by many.

The broader context: preserving the legacy

The closure of The Abbot’s Fireside is not an isolated incident. Recent research indicates that approximately 6.92% of pubs in the UK close annually. In 2023 alone, 769 pub businesses became insolvent, a significant increase from the 518 closures in 2022. 

Several factors contribute to this trend, including rising operational costs, changing consumer habits, and the lingering economic impacts of global events such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite their cultural significance, historic establishments are not immune to these challenges.

While The Abbot’s Fireside has ceased operations, discussions are underway within the community about potential avenues to preserve its legacy. Some residents have proposed transforming the site into a heritage centre or community space, ensuring that its rich history remains accessible to future generations.

This shift has had an impact on London’s food scene, known for its mix of traditional pubs, Michelin-star restaurants, and various street markets, causing long queues and overcrowding at certain hotspots. Locals have claimed that the influx of tourists has made it increasingly difficult to enjoy their favourite meals.

To tackle this issue and prevent tourists from visiting their favourite places, they’ve decided to undertake an unexpected strategy and have resorted to “catfishing”. How does this work? Londoners have begun writing excellent reviews of places they would not visit to draw unfamiliar people to them rather than the places they would actually go to.

One of the targets is Angus Steakhouse, a chain with locations across London. While the restaurant is not considered particularly bad, exaggerated reviews are popping up on Reddit, X and TripAdvisor from locals hoping that tourists would go there instead of other, better places.

One of the viral reviews comes from a supposed vegetarian who started eating meat again after 15 years, saying that “even I can’t resist Angus Steakhouse’s steak sandwiches.” Another reviewer added: “Angus Steakhouse is on my wish list for the last meal I ever have. Absolutely phenomenal place. I just hope the tourists do not find out about it.”

Even though this is a clever way to try and chase away tourists, not everyone is falling for it. Many people were quick to figure out the trick, feeling something was not right but explaining that they could not really understand what.

While for Londoners this is a way to keep their favourite places private and without overcrowding from tourists, others have called this trick “cruel” and “pathetic and embarrassing”.
