For many Gen Z respondents, these so-called psychic moments are linked to simple daily instincts rather than anything mystical. The Talker Research survey found that common examples include knowing when something feels “off,” sensing when someone is not telling the truth, or feeling when it is the right time to leave a situation. Around 33 percent said they can sense when something is wrong, while 28 percent mentioned detecting dishonesty. Another 26 percent reported having a gut feeling about when to walk away from something, which they later believed was the correct decision.

Across generations, intuition appears to be a regular part of decision-making, even if people describe it differently. The survey found that about 71 percent of Americans rely on intuition at least sometimes, while only around 11 percent say they do not believe in it at all. On average, respondents reported having about 18 moments per year that they considered “psychic” or strongly intuitive. Gen Z stood out with roughly two such moments per month, compared with about one per month among baby boomers.

These intuitive experiences also appear in practical daily situations. Around 25 percent of respondents said they had a bad feeling before something happened, while a similar percentage reported simply “knowing” an outcome in advance. About 24 percent said they thought of someone just before that person contacted them. Other examples included 22 percent sensing that someone could not be trusted, and 19 percent saying they knew what someone was going to say before they said it.

Differences between generations also appeared in specific areas where intuition was strongest. Gen X respondents were the most likely to say they could correctly predict outcomes, at around 21 percent. Millennials reported a stronger connection between dreams and intuition, also at about 21 percent. When it came to dating, both Gen Z and millennials reported similar levels of intuition at around 14 percent. Financial intuition was also shared across generations, with Gen Z and baby boomers showing similar confidence at about 14 percent.

Adam Dickinson, a former FBI intelligence analyst and current intuition advisor, said that intuition is often connected to the brain recognising patterns based on previous experiences. He explained that intuition usually feels calm and steady, while anxiety tends to feel repetitive, urgent, and stressful. Many respondents admitted they struggled to tell the difference between the two. According to the survey, around 35 percent said they were not confident they could separate gut feelings from anxiety.

The growing interest in intuition is also linked to wider social and online trends. Content related to astrology, tarot cards, manifestation, and similar beliefs has become increasingly visible on social media platforms such as TikTok. At the same time, many respondents said therapy and mental health support had helped them better understand their emotions and internal reactions. However, technology use, including AI and constant online activity, was also seen by many participants as reducing trust in personal instincts.

The latest clash began when Dimitris Tsarouhas, 53-year-old owner of a restaurant in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, sought UNESCO status for patsa, arguing the soup’s origins stretch back to ancient Greece and even Homer’s “Odyssey.”

Tsarouhas told The Associated Press (AP) he had assembled a detailed historical dossier with the help of a local cultural organisation and author Lena Oflidis, who wrote a book tracing the soup’s history. He claimed the recipe was passed from ancient Greeks to Byzantines and later to the Ottomans.

He also pointed to a passage in “The Odyssey” describing bovine bellies filled with suet (animal fat used in cooking) and blood during a feast prepared by Penelope for her suitors on the day that her husband came back from his decade-long journey.

The Greek initiative has angered many in Türkiye, where iskembe soup is also deeply embedded in culinary tradition. Turkish restaurateur Ali Turkmen rejected the Greek claim, saying the soup has been central to Turkish culture for centuries.

“Just like with baklava and many other things, they want to claim it as their own,” Turkmen said. “But it will probably be difficult for them to claim something unique to us. Because it’s been a staple in our culture for centuries. Tripe is something specific to Turks.”

The Onedio news portal cited the writings of famed 17^th-century Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi, who, in his “Book of Travels”, described tripe soup vendors in Istanbul as evidence of its long history in Türkiye.

The dispute adds to a long-running rivalry between the neighbouring nations over ownership of foods and cultural traditions shaped during centuries of Ottoman rule. Greeks and Turks have previously sparred over coffee, stuffed grape leaves and baklava.

Despite the tensions, voices on both sides have called for shared culinary traditions to foster connection rather than divide the two countries.

“This is the first study to test several of the major hypotheses for human handedness in a single framework,” explains Thomas A. Püschel, one of the study authors and a professor of anthropology at the University of Oxford.

A paper published in PLOS Biology journal reveals how the team looked at “handedness” data from over 2,000 individuals, across 41 species of monkeys and apes. Using Bayesian models, combining existing biological knowledge and genetic and physical observations, they tested various evolutionary explanations for handedness. The factors ranged from diet to tool use, to social structure, habitat, body, and brain size.

The two variables that made the most difference to the modelling were bipedalism and brain size, leading the researchers to set out a two-stage explanation for human handedness.

First, humans began walking upright on two legs, which freed up their hands for use other than self-propulsion. This in turn meant humans who developed “specialized hand use” for transporting items, communicating, or using tools were more likely to survive and pass on their genes.

The scientists note that other tree-dwelling primates also exhibit stronger preferences for using one hand over the other, which they say is because propulsion through branches requires such precision and coordination. Humans simply began using their specialist hand differently when they no longer needed it for getting around.

The real leap however came when Homo sapiens emerged, with far bigger brains than their ancestors. Homo sapiens were far more likely to be right-handed than Homo erectus and Neanderthals, the researchers say.

Still to explore though are: the reason why left-handedness can still be found at all in human populations; and the extent of the impact of “education” and culture on right-handedness rates. In many human communities, right-handedness was conceived of as socially preferable, and children who exhibited a preference for using their left hand used to be forced to “learn” how to use their right hand instead.

The research team also suggests further studies on other species of animal to ascertain whether other bipedal creatures such as kangaroos or parrots, who show a leaning for one “hand” over the other, evolved the tendency in the same way.

Bordered by Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan, the “sea” is in fact an inland body of water — the largest on the planet — a brackish lake fed by 130 rivers, with the Volga the main source. A remnant of the ancient Paratethys Sea (alongside the Aral Sea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov), it now has no outlets, so the amount of incoming water from rivers and rain, and the rate of evaporation are the factors that affect its levels. Those water levels have been declining since the mid-1990s, satellite imagery shows.

But now, scientists have found that global warming is worsening the situation, and even casual observers can see that the former shoreline along Azerbaijan’s Absheron Peninsula is shrinking to expose the seabed. The sea suffered a two-metre drop in water level between 1996 and 2023 and experts predict a loss of between five and 18 metres by 2100. 

“Climate change is accelerating evaporation and disrupting the water balance of the Caspian Sea,” says Dr. Elnur Safarov, of the IDEA Public Union and coordinator of the Caspian Integrated Scientific Network (CASPISNET).

It’s important because the declining water levels are impacting wildlife and humanity along the basin’s delta, wetlands, and reed beds. “Fish in the Caspian Sea, which include sturgeon and other endemic species, are losing their natural habitats,” says zoologist Dr Nijat Hasanov, adding that “Nesting, breeding and resting habitats for millions of birds, including pelicans, flamingos and ducks” are also in jeopardy.

Other creatures who feed on the fish such as the endangered Caspian seal are now at greater risk, and human fishers face food insecurity too. Azerbaijani fishing communities now “have to go deeper into the sea to catch the same amount of fish they used to catch nearby the shore,” explains Farhad Mukhtarov, water governance specialist with the International Institute of Social Studies.

The “delicate hydrological balance” that needs to be achieved to address these serious concerns requires cooperation among “all five Caspian littoral states,” according to Mahir Aliyev, Coordinator of the Secretariat of the Tehran Convention. Marine safeguards and sustainable development principles have already been adopted by the five Caspian coastal nations, but Aliyev is calling again for “coordinated regional action” that he deems “essential to manage the environmental consequences across the basin.”

The experiment involved 120 participants who were all given the same portion of fries. Although the food was identical in every case, the way it was presented changed the experience. After each round, participants rated how pleasant and tasty the fries were.

Fries taken from another plate were consistently rated as more enjoyable than fries that were simply received or eaten directly. The highest ratings came from the high-risk stealing situation, where participants felt more pressure and awareness of being observed. In this condition, the fries were rated around 40 per cent more enjoyable than those eaten in a normal, legitimate way. Participants also described the fries as saltier, crispier, and more flavourful, even though the food itself never changed.

Researchers explain this effect through the idea that risk and restriction can change how the brain interprets food. When something feels forbidden or slightly risky, the experience becomes more exciting. This emotional intensity can influence taste perception, making the same food feel more rewarding. The study links this to the so-called “forbidden fruit effect”, where people tend to value things more when they are not fully allowed to have them. In this case, even a small act like taking fries from another plate can increase enjoyment because it adds a sense of transgression.

The social setting also plays an important role in how food is experienced. The study shows that eating is not only about flavour, but also about context and behaviour. When food is taken from someone else, even in a controlled experiment, it introduces emotions such as excitement and mild guilt. These feelings can intensify the overall experience of eating. However, researchers note that guilt and excitement alone do not fully explain why the fries tasted better. Instead, the situation itself, including the perceived risk, appears to have the strongest influence on enjoyment.

The findings also connect to a broader idea often seen in everyday life: people tend to want things more when access feels limited. This is known as a scarcity mindset, where restricted availability increases perceived value. It can apply to food, travel experiences, and even social situations. In dining settings, this may explain why sharing plates, tasting food from others, or experiencing “forbidden” bites often feels more enjoyable than expected. The study suggests that taste is not fixed only by ingredients, but also shaped by the environment and the social rules around eating.

Currently, only El Al and Arkia are providing nonstop connections between Israel and the United States. Meanwhile, American Airlines’ rivals such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have moved ahead with plans to slowly resume Tel Aviv services.

While neither the FAA nor the EASA has issued a full ban on flights to Israel, both have imposed strict operational restrictions and safety guidance due to the elevated risk environment.

Despite the extended suspensions in the Middle East region, American continues to adjust its wider network in anticipation of strong demand elsewhere. The airline is preparing for a record-breaking summer season in 2026, with projections of around 75 million passengers expected across its operations, underscoring how geopolitical conditions reshape global aviation.

Since October 2025, 5.9 million people have completed Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) applications to enter the US, from the 42 visa waiver nations where the authorisation is needed. Over five million of those applications have been approved, US State Department figures reveal. Not all of those applications will have been from football fans, and it’s also worth noting that 32 of the countries where citizens require ESTA authorisation are in Europe, where football is a highly popular game. In total, 16 European countries have qualified for the competition, making the notion of five million ESTA-approved fans seem a relatively paltry number.

For context, to date, the top country by number of ESTA approvals is the United Kingdom, with more than 1.2 million. That’s more than double the number of the nearest rival, France, which has 570,000 authorisations. Then comes Germany, with 530,000. Japan has 500,000, and South Korea has over 320,000 authorisations.

Commentary by fans online blames a range of factors for the reluctance to support their teams in person. A major hurdle is the cost of transatlantic travel at a time when high jet fuel prices are pushing up air fares even further. Add in the expense of overnight accommodation, plus the need for additional air travel across a whole continent to see different games, and this year’s World Cup begins to seem unattainable for many fans. Even the billionaire US President himself told the New York Post he wouldn’t pay four figures to attend a match. Even those who are attending have expressed worries that the stadium atmosphere will be subdued, with fans dispersed over the entirety of North America.

Then there’s the Trump administration’s border and immigration crackdown, which experts agree has, in general, had a chilling effect on consumer demand for visiting the States. Specific policies, such as a travel ban on Haiti and Iran, and the requirement for arrivals from 50 nations to provide a financial bond of up to $15,000  before they travel, have not helped the situation. Five of those bond countries are World Cup qualifiers (Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia). By April 2026, US officials told press only 250 people from bond countries had applied to visit, essentially confirming that those fans have been labouring under a major ticket booking disincentive—until now. In mid-May 2026, reportedly under significant pressure from FIFA, the US State Department waived the bond for people who had purchased match tickets.

However, with less than a month to go before the Cup kicks off, during which undecided fans will need to buy tickets, process applications, book flights, and find accommodation, it remains to be seen whether that bond waiver will be enough to save the 2026 World Cup.

The deal that will decide whether O’Leary will carry on is likely to see him pocket a significant chunk of that, according to a Ryanair statement. “Under the proposed new contract,” it says, he “will have a purchase option over 10m shares struck at market price (before the recent Iran war related decline), but (similar to his 2019 grant) these options will only be exercisable if very ambitious profits after tax or share price growth targets are achieved, which will create substantial value for all shareholders.”

There are not many in the market who would bet against O’Leary delivering on those ambitions, despite the challenges of the current Strait of Hormuz hobbled market. O’Leary has a track record for turning a negative into a positive, as he did during a public spat with Elon Musk earlier this year, channelling the publicity into what he called a “Big Idiot Sale.”

In fact, Ryanair shares climbed by nearly five percent during Monday’s trading alone. In an interview with Bloomberg on the same day, canny strategising was evident as he described an enviable fuel hedging position that means Ryanair’s supply costs are low and stable to March 2027. O’Leary also ventured into political punditry, arguing that President Donald Trump would not allow the Strait of Hormuz to remain closed since his electoral survival depends on it. “The midterm election season kicks off on Memorial Day at the end of May,” he said, adding: “You know, Trump is going to lose the House and the Senate if he doesn’t get this resolved and reopened. None of us know when the timing will be but, you know, I hope it’s sooner rather than later.”

Adding to the positive outlook for the airline, it awaits the delivery of 300 Boeing Air Max 10—an aircraft whose benefits O’Leary summed up as “20% more seats per plane burns 20% less oil.” The planes were reportedly purchased at bargain prices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eliminating the need for passengers between the two countries to transit via the usual Asian hubs, such as Colombo, Doha, Dubai, or Singapore, the the new non-stop flight route will slash prior travel times of around 20 hours in half.

The direct flights come as part of a wider agreement between Visit Maldives Corporation and Luxury Escapes Pty Ltd, a major Australian travel and lifestyle platform. Together, they will coordinate trade, consumer, media, and retail promotions to raise awareness of the Maldives as a destination through a variety of events, retail campaigns, showcases, and integrated initiatives across Australian markets.

With arrivals having swelled nearly 10% to 2.25 million in 2025, the Maldives continue to seek opportunities for sustainable tourism growth, and Australia is seen as a good source since the Aussie winter travel season overlaps with the Maldives’ “shoulder season” helping to spread arrivals and spending across the year.
