European rail travellers will soon benefit from a new sleeper train, launching on 14 December 2025 and connecting Poland with four iconic destinations across Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia.

A complete journey on the new night service from Przemysl, in southeastern Poland to Munich in Bavaria, will take around 16 and a half hours, departing at 5:51 pm local time and arriving in the Bavarian capital the following morning at 10:24 am, in time for a typical weißwurst breakfast of white sausage, sweet mustard, pretzels and, if desired a wheat beer.

The EN Carpatia route, operated by Polish state rail operator PKP Intercity, will call at Rzeszów, Kraków and Katowice in Poland, before dividing at Bohumin, in the east of Czechia. Some carriages will go on to stops in the Slovakian capital, Bratislava, and Hungary’s Budapest, while the others will continue to Vienna, Linz and Salzburg in Austria, before reaching the terminus in Munich. Returns are timetabled to leave Munich at 6:45 pm and pull in to Przemysl at 10:10 am the following day.

Polish state rail operator PKP Intercity is set to launch a new overnight sleeper train offering direct travel from southeastern Poland to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, as well as Munich in Germany. pic.twitter.com/LtpgAj4a5P
— TVP World (@TVPWorld_com) November 10, 2025

Travellers on the EuroNight service are required to reserve ahead, with the option of a couchette or a sleeper compartment for up to three people. “Deluxe” level amenities include snacks and hot beverages, comfort items such as towels and slippers, and a wash kit with shower gel, toothbrush, and toothpaste to ensure passengers arrive fresh.

A lights-out rule between 10 pm and 6 am aims to allow passengers to get some sleep with no fear of missing their stop, thanks to conductors who will wake passengers half an hour before their chosen destination.

Tickets start at €50, which British news outlet The Independent describes as “in stark contrast to sleeper options in the UK,” comparing the new Polish 905-km trip to the 715-km route run by Caledonian Sleeper from London to Inverness, on which upright seats start at £79 (around €90).

The new sleeper route comes just in time for applicants to the latest round of free EU rail passes for up to 40,000 European 18-year-olds and is not the only new Polish connection recently announced. It comes amid improvements to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) that will see the development of new fast connections between Madrid and Lisbon, and an under-eight-hour trans-Baltic route that will take passengers from Tallinn, Estonia, to Warsaw. Investments in the network are also set to slash journey times significantly between Copenhagen and Berlin, Paris and Rome, and Vienna and Ljubljana.

Starting from 7 July 2025, Poland will be temporarily reinstating border controls with Germany and Lithuania. The measure aims to reduce irregular migrant crossings and is supported by Germany, while receiving criticism from neighbouring European countries.

The decision to reinstate the border controls was made during a government meeting with the Polish border guard on Tuesday 7 July. The meeting took place as domestic political pressure grows and as far-right backed patrols have been taking place at the border crossing with Germany over the past few weeks. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk blames Germany’s policy shift for the measure.

"There is no other way."

Amid tensions over Germany's stepped-up efforts to curb irregular migration, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced temporary controls on Poland's borders with Germany starting next week. pic.twitter.com/yspF8s3ZAb
— DW News (@dwnews) July 1, 2025

Since the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office, Germany has been deploying more police at its borders and has been denying entry to some people trying to cross. According to Tusk, many of those people who were sent away turned to Poland. The Polish Prime Minister said that even though he had spoken with his German counterpart several times regarding the matter, warning him that Poland’s patience was running out, the situation hadn’t changed.

“With no border checks on the Polish side, it becomes difficult to determine whether those being returned or redirected to Poland should be sent there. We have been defenders of the Schengen area and remain advocates of a Europe with open borders and unrestricted movement. However, such a system requires the same, symmetrical commitment from all neighbouring countries. Therefore, the temporary reinstatement of border controls on the Polish-German border is necessary to reduce, to the minimum, the uncontrolled flow of migrants crossing … the border,” Tusk said in a statement

Following the news from Poland, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was asked about the situation during a joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.

“We have a common problem that we want to solve together. We naturally want to preserve the Schengen area, but freedom of movement in the Schengen area will only work in the long term if it is not abused by those who promote irregular migration, in particular by smuggling migrants”, Friedrich Merz said. While addressing the press, Merz also added that there is no repatriation tourism from Germany to Poland as some Polish media have been claiming.

— Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (@bundeskanzler) July 1, 2025

Schengen area threatened

During the meeting with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden in Berlin, Friedrich Merz emphasised that the controls would be temporary and should disrupt travellers as little as possible. While Luxembourg’s Prime Minister agreed that illegal immigration is intolerable, he emphasised that the economic cooperation within the EU’s internal borders was not to be disrupted, proposing to increase police cooperation instead in order to reduce the controls.

While the Schengen area, created in 1995, has become a flagship pillar of the European Union, member states are allowed to temporarily reintroduce border controls under certain circumstances. To be able to do this, there has to be a serious threat – for example, internal security. However, border controls should be considered as a last resort, limited to exceptional situations and reduced in time.

Over the last couple of years, several countries have decided to reintroduce border controls within the Schengen area. In December 2024, the Netherlands started controlling its borders with Germany and Belgium, while France had already reintroduced border controls in October 2024.

The Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) is a major infrastructure project in Poland, comprising of the construction of a new international airport in Warsaw and the development of a 140 km long high-speed rail link between the capital and the cities of Łódź and Wrocław.

The construction of the airport was approved last year and its design revealed in October. For the high-speed railway, the construction of a 4 km long tunnel started in January and, now, the design of the new train station in Brzeziny has also been unveiled.

Brzeziny sits between Warsaw and Łódź, which will be the first completed segment of the new rail connection, scheduled to open in 2032, at the same time as the new Warsaw airport. Located about 20 km northeast of Łódź, the county town has lacked any rail transport access until now and the new railway and station are expected to not only connect the city to the rest of the country, but also boost regional economy.

© CPK

Planned to be “modern and multifunctional”, the Brzeziny station will feature two 400-metre-long, single-edge platforms with a height of 76 cm. The station’s northeast section will house the main hall for travellers, including ticket offices, administrative spaces, security offices and hygiene facilities. A service area adjacent to the passenger hall will accommodate travellers and staff during operating hours. Two main entrances will be located in the curtain wall façade, positioned in the southeast and northeast sections.

© CPK

“A standout feature of the station is its accessible green roof, designed as a rest area for travellers”, CPK says. “The green roof will be at platform level, providing seamless transitions between the communication zone and the relaxation space. Access to the roof will be via ground-level stairs in the underground passage leading to the platform, outdoor stairs and pedestrian paths in the northeast and southwest areas, as well as an elevator located near the northern entrance.”

The CPK notes however that while the design may be affected by feasibility analysis. Further inspections will refine the project’s layout, including platform and track configurations, which may still undergo adjustments.

The investment is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the EU’s list of priority infrastructure projects. The Y line, along with some elements of the existing railway network in Poland, will integrate into cross-border projects and be implemented in coordination with neighbouring countries. The aim of these actions is to improve rail connectivity with Central and Western European countries.

Poland’s plans for a new international airport in Warsaw have passed another milestone, with the delivery of the building’s design. Slated for opening in 2032, the brand new airport project presents tender-winners Foster + Partners and Buro Happold with “a truly unique opportunity to design an entirely new airport from scratch,” said Grant Brooker, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners.

A megaproject that is accessible and intuitive

The Central Communication Port or CPK is a Polish government megaproject for a new airport that has ambitions to serve 34 million passengers a year and grow to handle a 100 million. It will be linked to a new nationwide high-speed rail network. As such it has the potential to become a labyrinthine maze, but the team behind the design has worked to avoid that.

© CPK

The aim is to create “accessible, intuitive, and passenger-friendly infrastructure that ensures comfort, short transfer times, and a positive travel experience. Our design is focused on passengers and their needs,” Brooker added. That vision has led to “optimisations include shortening the piers by approximately 100 metres to reduce walking distances for passengers, facilitate transfers, and decrease the volume of the building,” press materials say.

Fewer skylights, warmer materials, stronger growth

Innovations since the concept stage include a reduction in skylights and the use of warmer materials in roof vaults, enhancing comfort, acoustics and aesthetics, according to a CPK press release. The overhanging terminal roof has also been replaced with a column-supported arcade, which provides better weather protection and reduces steel elements – therefore reducing costs.

The project is projected to require over €30 billion but has been described by Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak as “crucial for Poland.” Echoing that, Maciej Lasek,Government Commissioner for the CPK consortium said, it is an investment that “will drive Poland’s economic growth and strengthen the market position of the national carrier, LOT Polish Airlines.”

One half of me is German, the other is Polish. Polish food to me means comfort food, feeling home and being reminded of childhood. Of course, just as in other countries, you’ll find different food and various traditions in different areas of the country. Most certainly, however, you’ll be able to find most dishes when you travel to cities like Warsaw, Kraków or Gdańsk. There are plenty of delicious things that I could imagine naming as 5 dishes you should eat in Poland, but I’m going to limit myself to my favourites.

Every culture has their own dumplings. Some kind of meat or vegetarian stuffing covered with a thin layer of dough. In Poland the most common stuffing are ‘Pierogi Ruskie’, stuffed with a kind of white cottage cheese, potatoes and fried onions; Pierogi with a meat filling that is very unique due to how it’s prepared and the spices used; and then Pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms. All of these are delicious and there are more and more new inventions when it comes to stuffing. Pierogi are usually boiled or fried and served with lard and fried onions. You can also eat them as a dessert, stuffed with blueberries or strawberries and then served with sour cream and sugar – lovely!

Żurek is a thick soup that is made from a base of fermented rye. It sounds a bit strange but it’s very delicious, especially with some fresh bread on the side or around it. Yes, around it, because Żurek is very often served in a hollow bread loaf. Other ingredients are marjoram, potatoes, cooked smoked sausage and hard-boiled egg.

Bigos is very popular during winter to warm you up and because the fermented cabbage it’s made of has a lot of Vitamin C to keep you healthy. Bigos is basically a stew from fermented cabbage (or Sauerkraut), fresh cabbage, smoked sausage, mushrooms, braised meat, sometimes dried prunes and a lot of spices. The longer it’s cooked for (sometimes for several days), the more intense and almost caramelised it tastes. You’ll find it a lot around Christmas time.

Pączki are the Polish version of doughnuts. Fried round and slightly flat pieces of dough dropped into hot oil until golden brown, then filled with jam and sprinkled with sugar. Sometimes instead of just sugar they get a quick dip into a simple sugar glaze and a couple of candied orange pieces on top. They’re eaten best when still fresh and warm. The most common filling for Pączki is rose jam and you’ll get them all year round. Don’t miss out on eating a couple on Tłusty czwartek (Fat Thursday), the official day for Pączki, before lent starts.

And finally, the traditional Polish sausage. There are plenty of different kinds of sausage in Poland. The most common one is made from a mix of pork and beef. The meat is coarsely ground and mixed with garlic, Marjoram, juniper, pepper or other herbs and spices and is then usually smoked. Kielbasa can be eaten as a snack, on bread, or is often included in dishes like Bigos or Żurek. You’ll also find sausages made from veal, sometimes chicken and there are recipes that add bacon to it as well. Make sure to try a piece, maybe with a shot of Vodka.

The construction of Poland’s new 4 km long high-speed rail (HSR) tunnel is well underway, with a €34 million contract for the second stage of the project being signed between Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) and Budimex in December.

The tunnel will be part of an 140 km long high speed rail link being built to connect Warsaw with the cities of Łódź and Wrocław, which in turn is part of a larger development project, managed by CPK, aiming to transform the country’s railway network as well as to build a new mega-airport between Warsaw and Łódź. CPK plans to complete the construction of the tunnel simultaneously with the launch of the first stage of the airport.

© CPK

The construction of the long-distance tunnel in Łódź has been divided into three parts. The first one began in September 2023, according to a CPK statement, and includes work aimed at strengthening the foundations of the Łódź Cultural Centre (ŁDK). The second stage foresees the construction of the chambers for the tunnel boring machine with a shield skin. The third stage of the investment will be the actual drilling of the tunnel.

The tunnel is intended for long-distance trains, especially high-speed ones. In Łódź, high-speed trains will stop at the Łódź Fabryczna station. The tunnel is planned to exit south-west of Łódź Kaliska, in the vicinity of the Retkinia housing estate and the existing railway line number 14. The route continues westwards towards Sieradz, where it forks in the direction of Poznań and Wrocław.

© CPK

“CPK is not only about the planned airport, but also about the much-needed new railway lines in Poland”, said Radosław Kantak, member of the CPK Management Board for railway investments. “About 450 km of lines are already in an advanced design stage, including the railway sections between Warsaw and Łódź as well as Łódź and Wrocław. (…) The long-distance tunnel in Łódź is our most advanced railway investment in terms of preparations.”

The estimated value of the entire CPK project is unknown. In 2019, the government granted a 300 million złoty (€68.78 million) funding for the project. In June, the European Commission approved a 290 million złoty (€63.6 million) funding for the construction of the 140 km long railway line between Warsaw and Łódź. At the time, CPK estimated the cost of just this line at 350 million złoty (€80.24 million).

In October 2023, French airport operator Vici and the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund were announced as the preferred investors for the development of the CPK airport. At the time, a statement from the company revealed the plan was for the investors to acquire a 49% stake in the airport for approximatively 8 billion złoty (€1.84 billion), which would bring the total value of the airport to about €3.75 billion, However, Politico reported the following month that CPK “could swallow as much as 200 billion złoty (€46 billion) to build an airport in farmland about 40 kilometres southwest of Warsaw, served by 2,000 kilometres of high-speed rail linking it to most Polish cities.”

Ryanair CEO, Michael O’Leary, has heavily criticised the decision of building a new airport, calling on the Polish government to stop the project before unnecessarily spending any more taxpayer money. “The idea of building [the CPK airport] is incomprehensible to me, I can honestly say that I don’t understand this investment. Even though taxpayers have spent billions on this senseless project, it is still possible to abandon it and not go further. This airport is unnecessary. It was planned in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Only very stupid politicians could decide to do something like that”, he told Polish daily Rzeczpospolita.

A bus route in a scenic coastal part of Poland will be known by a new number after the end of this week, due to pressure from religious groups, according to Sky.

The 666 route goes to Hel – not the Biblical place of punishment, but a Baltic seaside resort town on a peninsula in northern Poland. Operated by PKS Gdynia, the 666 is the only bus on the peninsula. From 24 June, it will become the 669, according to PKS Gdynia’s socials, where they wrote: “this year, we’re turning the last 6 upside down.”

Religious fanatics have waged a decade-long a campaign against the route’s humorous number, which is also the “Number of the Beast” according to some translations of the Bible’s Book of Revelations.

In 2018, Catholic group Fronda criticised the route as “scandalous anti-Christian propaganda”, declaring it “just the tip of the iceberg of a much greater problem.”

The group published an article saying, “Hell is the negation of humanity. It is eternal death and suffering. You can only laugh at this reality if you simply don’t understand what it is.”

© PKS Gdynia

Marcin Szwaczyk, spokesperson for the bus operator said, “The management board buckled under the weight of letters and requests that were sent to us, maybe not in large numbers, but cyclically for many years with a request to change the line number.”

Indicating that the route’s playful number could be reinstated, his words hint that the change in number may be more a clever promotional ploy than an effort to appease Christian activists. “If in fact the response is large and strong enough to restore the line 666, it seems to me that we will listen to our passengers and change this number,” he said.

Hel is described by Lonely Planet as “a popular seaside town with good windsurfing.” It will certainly be a better-known destination as a result of the recent coverage.

Poland is one of the countries whose tourist industry has been affected by public perception of the war in neighbouring Ukraine. “Tourism in the region has been hobbled for years because the Ukraine conflict has been brewing for a long time and people knew that at some point there would be a big blowout,” travel security expert Samed Kizgin told Deutsche Welle (DW). Kizgin points out that such fears are unfounded as most of Poland’s resort areas are nowhere near the Ukraine border. He added that Poland’s help for refugees “does not affect the resorts that are usually booked by German or other foreign guests.”

Poland‘s Infrastructure Ministry has approved the general plan for for the foundation and construction of the Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK), a new airport to be built 40km outside of Warsaw. The approved General Plan is a necessary condition for applying for the Promise of Permission to Found the Airport, which CPK will apply to the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC) in the coming days. The promise will be one of the attachments to the application for a location decision, which follows the environmental decision, and precedes the application for a construction permit.

CPK’s General Plan 2022-2060 had already been consulted with the authorities of 13 municipalities in the investment’s surroundings, given a positive opinion by the President of the Civil Aviation Authority (ULC) and agreed with the Ministers of National Défense (MON) and Funds and Regional Policy (MFiPR). “The approval is a confirmation of the fundamental assumptions of the CPK project,” said Marcin Horała, Deputy Minister of Funds and Regional Policy. “This is very good news in the context of the already advanced process of selecting a financial partner who can take a minority stake in the company operating the airport.”

The approved CPK airport General Plan for 2022-2060 is in line with Poland’s transport policy. The concept included in the Plan is consistent with the Strategy for Responsible Development until 2020 (with an outlook to 2030) and the Strategy for Sustainable Transport Development until 2030. The Plan covers the area of 13 municipalities in the vicinity of the investment, located in the Mazowieckie and Łódzkie provinces.

The document sets out the next steps in the development of the airport until the end of 2060, the time horizon of aviation forecasts for Poland from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The first phase of the General Plan covers the period starting in 2028, the expected year in which the airport will be operational. The plan assumes that the airport will at that time have two parallel runways, infrastructure for approximately 330,000 aircraft operations (take-offs and landings) per year and a terminal suitable to serve 40 million passengers per year.

During this phase, the airport is to cover around 2,150 hectares, for which the company is intensively buying up the required land. The Voluntary Acquisition Program has already enrolled 80% of the developed property. The signed purchase contracts cover an area of almost 450 hectares, about 100 hectares are awaiting notarial deeds while about 1,100 hectares are in advanced negotiations.

Further infrastructure development is spread over a number of phases and stages, and is dependent on the forecasts. The second phase covers the period up to 2060, by which time the airport may already have three parallel runways, infrastructure for around 450,000 aircraft operations per year and a terminal suitable for a passenger handling capacity of around 65 million per year. During this period, the size of the airport could be up to 3,900 hectares.

© CPK

The second phase is a long-term plan for the development of CPK, which has been set out to plan future areas for airport development. The entire area covered by the General Plan, in accordance with the Aviation Law, will be included in planning documents at the provincial, county and municipal levels.

The development restrictions apply from the date of approval of the General Plan until 2060, and should be taken into account in the land development of the airport surroundings. The idea is to ensure that newly constructed buildings do not become obstacles to the safety of flight operations in the future or interfere with the operation of the airport ground facilities.

On the area of the planned airport, in addition to the progressive purchase of properties within the Voluntary Acquisition Program, CPK-funded relocation and deconstruction works are also underway. The scope of work will increase once CPK has received the environmental decision. This application is currently being reviewed by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection (RDOŚ) in Warsaw.

At the same time, advanced design work is being carried out by, among others, the British design consortium Foster+Partners (Master Architect) and the Lebanese design company Dar Al-Handasah (Master Civil Engineer). As part of the framework agreement for the design of associated facilities, which has been signed with 13 companies – including a number of Polish ones – a tender is underway for the design of the air traffic control tower.

Moreover, the Polish capital received 68% of the votes from outside its own country, showing a true appreciation for the city. Even without national votes, Warsaw would have still got first place, so there is no denying it fully deserves the award.

Overall, this year’s edition saw the largest ever share of votes coming from outside Europe (52%), with less than half (48%) coming from within. This shows that, more than ever, foreign travellers have a strong interest in travelling to Europe. Warsaw was the preferred destination of American, Irish, Austrian, English and Australian travellers.

For the past 14 years, “European Best Destinations” has been working with major European tourist offices to showcase the beauty of Europe. From iconic capitals, cosmopolitan cities, to hidden charming locations surrounded by nature, warming locals and interesting food, there is no doubt that Europe has a vast amount of richness in culture and traditions.

Once the voting period ends, 20 destinations are named Europe’s best for the year, with the winner enjoying a special place on European Best Destination’s website until 31 December, as well as promotion by the project’s media partners.

The tallest building in the EU, called the Varso Tower, has just been completed in Warsaw by Foster + Partners. Part of HB Reavis’ Varso Place project, the tower is 310 metres tall, overtaking the Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt by 10 metres.

Varso Tower is a timeless addition to the skyline and a vibrant destination in the heart of Warsaw.
Jedrzej Kolesinski, Partner, Foster + Partners

© Foster+Partners

“In addition to the flexible office spaces, the building gives back to the city by providing a dynamic public realm. The tower’s direct underground link with the adjacent Warsaw Central Station will breathe new life into the surrounding urban quarter”, said Jedrzej Kolesinski, Partner, Foster + Partners.

© Foster+Partners

The building has 53 floors and is intended for mixed use, with offices, restaurants and public observation decks. Visitors will be able to reach the viewing platforms via two panoramic lifts. The platform at level 53 is the highest inhabited floor in Poland with uninterrupted views of the city, while at level 49, a fully landscaped terrace bar, with sixteen trees, will soon be completed, breaking the record for Warsaw’s highest garden.

© Foster+Partners

“We believe that the tower, filled with activity and featuring extraordinary rooftop public spaces will make a strong, positive contribution to this wonderful city”, said Grant Brooker, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. “We hope that it will become a hub for local and international business and a symbol for contemporary Poland.”

© Foster+Partners

For the 3-metre-high office floors, spanning over 70,000 square metres, two banks of high-capacity double-deck lifts, with each car serving two floors at any one time, are available. The 10-metre-high lobby features a floor to ceiling ceramic artwork by the local artist Krystyna Kaszuba-Wacławek.
