]]> Kotor, also known as Montenegro’s Adriatic gem, is struggling with the amount of tourists entering its picturesque streets on a daily basis. In times when many other tourist hotspots have decided to work with daily visitor limits and fees, some are proposing it is time to do the same in Kotor.

Being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and having served as the backdrop for many movies, including the now classic James Bond “Casino Royale”, the fact that Kotor is popular amongst tourists doesn’t come as a surprise. Its dwindling streets and breathtaking location on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast alone would be enough to explain the appeal. 

However, over the last years, the historic town, with a population of just 23,000, has been suffering in particular from the many cruise-related arrivals. According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, 7 August, alone, four cruise ships carrying about 5,000 tourists moored in the town. In 2024, around 500 cruise ships are expected to arrive. Montenegro’s economic output might depend a quarter on tourism but even so, such numbers are expected to raise concerns. 

“Our neighbours’ lives are becoming increasingly difficult during the tourist season”, Jovan Ristić, the director of the local tourist organisation, told Reuters. “All similar tourist destinations are working on reducing or selecting passenger ships and seriously collecting excursion fees.”

At the moment, those who enter Kotor by cruise have to pay 1 euro to do so. Many, including Ristić, are now asking whether it’s time to drive up that fee and maybe take other measures too.

Aside from the fact that the experience of visiting Kotor might become less romantic due to the tourist overload, the many visitors are causing other problems too, especially for locals. Traffic congestions have become a daily reality and housing prices has peaked since the popularity of the town has gone up, causing many to move away from the city.

Finally, on an ecological note, Kotor’s mass tourism sparks questions too. “Such a number of cruisers requires a study to determine the maximum environmental load,” said Milica Mandic, a scientific advisor at Montenegro’s Institute of Marine Biology.

]]> Sveti Stefan is a little islet located in Montenegro, 7.5 Km south of Budva. Historically, the islet was home of an ancient fishing village characterized by red-tiled roofs and cypress trees. The fortified village has a unique atmosphere thanks to its cobbled lanes, courtyards and serene sea views. The history of Sveti Stefan dates back to the 16th century. During this time, the Patrovici clan seized it from pirates and decided to build 12 houses there. The first church that was built on the small islet was dedicated to Saint Stephen – the Patron Saint of the Patrovici clan – hence the name of the village.

In the 20th century, the village has undergone a dramatic transformation. After World War II, the population of Sveti Stefan was decimated. In that moment, a group of Montenegrin architects and artists decided to restore the ancient buildings, and, in a very short amount of time, the village became a huge hospitality complex. Today, the entire islet of Sveti Stefan is occupied by a luxury 5-star resort, owned by the franchise group Aman Resorts. The resort has three idyllic beaches with pink sand, including a private beach set in an emerald lagoon.

The resort boosts 51 beautiful rooms, suites, and fishermen’s cottages overlooking the Adriatic Sea. All rooms have been restored and individually styled to showcase their original details and harmonize them with the old stone style of the village. The resort includes the 15th century property on Sveti Stefan islet and the 19th-century Villa Milocer on the mainland, connected together by a sandy isthmus. Both properties occupy an area of 80 acres.

The mainland in front of the islet, called New Sveti Stefan, is the perfect spot to admire the islet in all its beauty. Not very far from it, there are several other tourist places, such as Przno, a small village with beautiful sandy beaches, or the Praskvika Monastery established in 1413.

Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, this fabulous destination attracts each year visitors from all around the world, including Hollywood celebrities and European VIP such as Sofia Loren, Kirk Douglas, and Queen Elizabeth.

]]> Montenegro is one of the smallest countries in Europe but with a rich and varied landscape: beaches, lakes, mountains, caves, to must-see buildings with amazing architecture. You name it. Today I will share with you my favourite top-10 nature attractions in this country, which I hope you will one day have the joy to visit.

1. Durmitor

Durmitor is a massif located in northwestern Montenegro and is part of the Dinaric Alps. Its highest peak, Bobotov Kuk, reaches 2523 meters. This place is perfect for hikers, the view is amazing and one of the most scenic in Montenegro.

2. Bay of Kotor

The Bay of Kotor, also known as Boka, is the winding bay of the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro and the region surrounding it. There are lovely views here, and Kotor’s Old Town offers more picturesque scenes and is definitely worth a visit.

3. Lovćen

If you fancy hiking and walking in nature, you will surely enjoy visiting Lovćen. This mountain and national park are located in the southwestern part of the country. Don’t forget to also visit the biggest and most important monument of Lovćen national park, Petar Petrović Njegoš’s Mausoleum, constructed in 1971.

4. Ada Bojana

This island is located in the Ulcinj Municipality, the name Ada being Serbian for river island. Ada Bojana offers kitesurfing and windsurfing locations on the Adriatic coast thanks to the strong onshore crosswinds that blow on summer afternoons. This place is also known to be great for camping.

5. Jaz Beach

This sandy beach is one of the longest beaches in the Budva area, the water is clear with a pretty view and pleasantly fresh air. There are plenty of find good restaurants near to the beach, just don’t forget your sun cream!

6. Crno Jezero

Crno Jezero or Black Lake is located in the Municipality of Žabljak in northern Montenegro. It is a glacial lake on Mount Durmitor at an elevation of around 1400m and just 3 km from the town of Žabljak. The lake is easily accessible, as it is within walking distance from the center of the town, and you can find several water based activities or simply take a walk around to enjoy the view and take some photos.

7. Komovi

Komovi mountain range is part of the Dinaric Alps. Its highest peak, Kom Kučki, reaches 2500 meters and since 2018 Komovi has been classified as a nature park and protected natural area. This is thanks to its ecological significance and abundance of the flora and fauna. This also makes it a favored spot for hikers.

8. Vrmac

The numerous hiking and mountain trails of Vrmac with its beautiful views of the Bay of Kotor will leave you speechless. The mountain is located in south-western Montenegro, overlooking the coastal town of Tivat and the peninsula which divides Tivat Bay from Kotor Bay. This is a must visit!

9. Lake Biograd

The well-known Lake BIogard is located in Kolašin and is a glacial lake on Bjelasica Mountain in Biogradska Gora national park. The Lake is 1100m long and 410m wide and is a perfect spot for a picnic and to have a little rest from hiking.

10. Lipa Cave

Lipa Cave is a karst cave and one of the largest cave monuments in Montenegro. An incredible 2.5 km long system of passages and halls, you can visit the cave as a group or in private with and a guide who will assist and give you more information about the caves. But beware, don’t get lost!

]]> There is no better way to market a good quality product than following the word of mouth strategy (WOM). If it is spontaneous and honest even better. We are all aware of one of the basic rules of human behavior when it comes to trusting a certain product: we tend to believe more the recommendations from our friends and family than any other form of advertising.

Social networks have given us a free tool to market ourselves as experts and influencers, just by the popularity criteria, without any certification needed. And that has been used in brand marketing, in a travel destination marketing, or even in a nation branding. But I believe we are facing an era of a fading fame of internet influencers who were selling us hotels, apparel brands, new technology, etc. And it seems that as soon as this became and industry, the influencers’ market lost its magic.

How do we create a vibe that is not dependent on non-transparent social networks algorithms. Is there a way?

As soon as I saw the “Spend your summer in Georgia” campaign last spring, I knew it would hit the spot, but I never imagined to what extent. Georgia is a country set between the gorgeous Caucasus mountains and almost a tropical Black Sea coast, and with almost 500 vine sorts, a delicate culture and art, and a cuisine everybody in the gourmet world speaks about.

The Georgian government invested a lot in their promotional strategy, and as they have a good quality product, the WOM did the rest.

Georgia has been a brand in the former USSR, and even earlier; since the times of Romanovs, it was the Spain, or Italy of that part of the world. And it still is. That’s why last year’s Kremlin decision to ban flights from Russia threatened its tourism industry, given that many small businesses are still dependent on their northern neighbors’ tourism spending, and who are still occupying 20% of their territory. The Russian political decision was a trigger for five young Georgian women to start a social campaign with a simple goal to promote their country and its beauties to the global market.

People are already coming, and falling in love with the country, at least I did. But what these girls did is something really special. In less than 24 hours from publishing the campaign, their Facebook group called “Spend your summer in Georgia” reached 10.000 people, and today it is more than 300.000 strong. It is a decentralized, non-profit platform which has only three rules:

  • No discrimination and hate speech
  • No self-promotion (individual or business)
  • Only posts relevant to Georgia are published.

And they are doing a great job. Inspired by them, last Friday I decided to start a hashtag of my own: #SpendYourSummerInMontenegro

And did it work! Montenegro is 7 times smaller than Georgia and our group already has almost 2000 members. Members are eager to brag about our beautiful nature, our rich heritage and cuisine: 5000 interactions so far.

From the sandy beaches of Ulcinj, to the birds from the Lake of Skadar, and its vineyards. From our renaissance cities in the Bay of Kotor, luxurious hotels and national parks, to people are posting their photos and videos, articles, not being afraid that someone is going to judge their camera skills. And that is the real thing, no fake posing and filters, just genuine Montenegro, and all it has to offer.

My country is highly dependent on tourism and according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, a third of our economy comes from it. A third of our GDP, a third of our employment. We can not risk to lose our guests. While they are prevented to travel to Montenegro, we can remind them of their memories from time they spent here, and they can also share with us what they miss the most, on an open source non-curated online platform.

And this is how I see the way we will travel tomorrow, an enhanced word of mouth to promote travel in a post-Covid world. We are all learning to walk again. We are still afraid, and that is why we need to remind ourselves of the world that is out there. To remind people of the beauty of this planet that we had taken for granted for a long time.
