Japan is set to raise its visa fees for the first time in five decades, in what officials say is a bid to align visa prices with the true costs of immigration admin, staffing, and infrastructure.

The historic move means that from 1 July 2025, tourists and corporate arrivals from nations that do not benefit from a visa waiver will pay five times as much as before to enter Japan. Single-entry visas will go up from ¥3,000 (around €16) to ¥15,000 (around €80). The fee for a multi-entry visa with a validity period of between one and five years, allowing stays of 90 days at a time, is being hiked by the same ratio, from ¥6,000 (€32) to ¥30,000 (over €160).

@hiro_no_tabi
Japan visa price hike
♬ original sound – Hiro | Japan Food + Travel

Although the Japanese economy has been famously stagnant since the national asset and real estate bubble burst in the early 1990s, officials have blamed the visa price increase on inflation and shifts in exchange rates.

Although it will affect major source markets like China, India, the Middle East, and the Philippines, even the planned five-fold increase in visa costs is unlikely to negatively impact visitor numbers in Japan, which has seen booming arrivals since the COVID-19 pandemic.

An Indian restaurant owner in Japan breaks down after his visa was rejected forcing him to return to India

"My kids only speak Japanese. I've worked hard for 30 years and bought a house. I haven't committed a crime and did my best. Is this humane?" he asks in a viral clip pic.twitter.com/7hWkK3T29o
— Shashank Mattoo (@MattooShashank) May 27, 2026

The country—once closed to all but a limited amount of foreign trade for the 220-year Edo period— has now become so popular with foreign guests that overtourism is a growing concern. The introduction of visitor access charges for certain shrines, hiking trails around Mount Fuji, increased rail tickets, and even political tensions with China have failed to significantly calm the tourism sector, and so the visa increases are not expected to be off-putting either, officials say.

Indeed, the creation of a new Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, or JESTA, that comes alongside the visa price increase, could make it easier for travellers to apply to visit. From 2028, would-be visitors to Japan from 74 visa-waiver nations will be able to submit identity and travel information online for screening before they depart.

On top of the changes for tourists, immigration fees are on their way up too, from ¥10,000 (€58) to ¥100,000 (€583) for residence and visa renewals, and up to ¥300,000 (€1,750) for permanent residency applications. These prices are yet to be confirmed and are predicted to be rolled out in spring 2027. Part of the funds raised by this adjustment are reportedly earmarked for Japanese language lessons for foreigners. Japan’s foreign resident population reached a record 4.13 million at the end of 2025.

Japan’s famous bullet trains are getting an upgrade in autumn 2026, with the introduction of a new “Supreme Class” offering lockable, private suites and reclining chairs that are being compared to First Class accommodation on planes.

The Shinkansen trains set for the makeover are run by JR Central and JR West, and operate on the country’s most-used route, linking Tokyo with Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. With their current standard or “green” (business) class carriages, they already boast an enviable reputation among high-speed rail transport for fast, comfortable journeys, but from 1 October, they are set to surpass themselves as the private compartments are rolled out.

The operators have said around 30% of all Tokaido Shinkansen trains will feature Supreme Class by the end of 2028, but initially, 12 departures per day will feature the new Supreme Class, with 30 brought online by the end of the year.

The new cabins can be configured for two passengers, with a settee, and more room, or a smaller layout meant for solo travellers. The cabin seating, however, will not be able to be rotated to face the direction of travel both ways. There will be one of each cabin type on each train fitted with the carriages on the Nozomi Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagoya. Eventually, some Hikari and Kodama routes may also feature the suite-like accommodation.

In addition to the private suites, Supreme Class Seats are slated for introduction between April 2027 and March 2028. It will consist of three rows of two seats that will be rotatable, so it may be better suited for passengers who suffer from travel sickness. The Supreme Class Seats are described as “semi-private”, though not fully enclosed.

Passengers in the seats and the suites will benefit from dedicated Wi-Fi, personal seat speakers, plus a device enabling them to adjust lighting, air conditioning, and announcement volume. Light refreshments will also be included in the ticket price.

The advent of the Supreme Class cabins and seats aligns with wider travel trends towards premium services. JR Central President Shunsuke Niwa said the cabins would “provide better services to customers who want high-quality offerings.”

In the latest example of destinations asking visitors to participate in sustainable tourism, Okinawa in Japan has launched a citizen-science programme inviting divers to gather data to protect the region’s coral reefs and the sharks and rays that live there.

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) recognises sharks and rays as “key indicator species” that speak to coral reef health and wider biodiversity. By inviting guests and diving enthusiasts in the region to monitor the species’ numbers in a census, PADI is contributing to a photo identification database that will help in fighting wildlife decline.

© PADI

A two-day certification process comes first, training every diver to collect and upload photographs of the creatures they see, along with dive location, date and time. This all goes onto an international database on the free-to-use Padi Aware app, to be collated by James Cook University students in Queensland, Australia, and made available to NGOs worldwide.

Suitable for already-certified divers (not beginners), the PADI Shark & Ray Conservation Specialty Course is offered at several of Japan’s diving locations and costs from €162. The course entails a short e-learning module about sharks and rays, why they are endangered, and how the project is fighting those threats, as well as two mandatory 45-minute training dives.

For more than a decade, the diver community has built the world's largest underwater citizen science database, logging over 2.5 million pieces of debris across 120 countries.

That data has reached the UN, CITES, and governments, helping shape ocean policy.

Sharks and rays have… pic.twitter.com/7bKM5PHyWx
— PADI (@PADI) June 3, 2026

It’s not the first time the local population has worked with unexpected partners to combat environmental challenges. One of the issues facing Okinawa’s reefs is the coral bleaching that occurs during extreme heat. In 1998, in Onna Village in Manza Bay, 90% of the corals were destroyed by bleaching. Local fishers and divers worked hand-in-hand to rescue surviving corals and plant a coral nursery, with the ambition of becoming the most coral-friendly community in the world.

It worked to bring sharks back to underwater limestone formations. But another bleaching during a failed typhoon season in 2024 has again disrupted the habitat. As well as spotting and recording the species that signpost coral health, diving volunteers can track the system’s regrowth in real time.

Reefs in Okinawa have been part of the region’s attractions for years, providing a basis for the marine tourism that is so economically vital. Now, thanks to PADI’s new initiative, instead of passive visitation, guests drawn by those marine habitats can actively participate in protecting the ecosystem, forming a circular economy of attention that aims to keep fish populations, fisheries, and leisure stakeholders healthy for years to come.

Japan’s luxury sleeper train Seven Stars in Kyushu will be expanding its offer throughout 2026. Three new itineraries will be added to the time schedule, allowing visitors to explore some of Kyushu Island’s less-visited regions.

In 2013, Seven Stars in Kyushu was launched and dubbed Japan’s first luxury sleeper train. From the start of its journey, the train company has adopted an exclusive and quite unique approach. Tickets for two- and four-day journeys cost thousands of dollars, a price tag many were skeptic about before the launch. Yet people proved to be interested in the concept and with room for just 20 people aboard, Seven Stars in Kyushu has been oversubscribed since the start – meaning interested travellers enter a ballot before being able to book a spot.

Following that success, the train company has added three new itineraries to its 2026 offer. Just like before, the train will still set off from Hakata Station in Fukuoka. From there, travellers will journey to the mountain gorge town of Takachiho, to the volcanic onsen resort Unzen, or to the highland plateau of Kuju – all part of Kyushu island’s less-visited yet visit-worthy regions.

The goal of Seven Stars in Kyushu remains unchanged.

With this desire, we have organised unique Kyushu trips. Enjoy the Seven Stars journey and make unforgettable memories through the Seven Stars, a masterpiece of the artisans of Kyushu,” the company explains on its website.

As said before, voyagers aboard the Seven Stars in Kyushu should not expect to be met with a large crowd. Overall, the train has seven cars, five of which are used as (deluxe) suites. The ten suites each offer room to two people, meaning there won’t be more than 20 passengers aboard during one of the train’s journeys.

Aside from the cars containing suites, the luxury train also has a lounge car called Blue Moon and a salon bar called Jupiter, where passengers can meet each other and talk. A bar, tea room, and gallery shop complete the onboard offer.

“The Lounge Car Blue Moon is a saloon on wheels, where you can wind down during the day. At night, sip drinks at the bar and mingle with fellow passengers in the modern Japanese atmosphere as the pleasant sound of the live piano performance tinkles in the background. Enjoy the starry sky that peers in from the panoramic windows with a glass of bliss in your hand and relax on the sofas to take in the stunning views that pass by. This space provides the perfect setting for social gatherings as well as solo time,” Seven Stars in Kyushu explains.

Shibuya ward in Tokyo has introduced on-the-spot fines for littering as it responds to growing pressure from rising visitor numbers and increasing waste in public spaces. Shibuya ward is an administrative district of Tokyo, responsible for managing local rules and services in the area. The new system applies to streets and parks in one of the city’s busiest entertainment and shopping districts, including the area around the famous Shibuya Crossing. Visitors caught dropping rubbish will be fined 2,000 Japanese yen (€10.75), with payment collected immediately by patrol staff.

Local officials say the decision comes after previous efforts to encourage better behaviour did not work as expected. “We cannot tolerate littering simply because there are no rubbish bins,” Shibuya Ward authorities said, highlighting that awareness campaigns and warning notices alone were not enough. The ward is aiming to make rules clearer and easier to enforce, especially in areas that attract large crowds every day.

The system is being rolled out in response to Japan’s record tourism growth, with 42.7 million international visitors recorded in 2025. Shibuya officials say the increase in foot traffic has led to more cases of public drinking and littering, particularly around train stations and busy pedestrian zones. The authorities stress that rules will apply equally to both locals and foreigners.

@cashmeow Trash Everywhere! #fyp #fypシ #tokyo #shibuya #japan ♬ Cute – Aurel Surya Lie

To enforce the new rules, around 50 patrol officers are being deployed across the district. Staff include English, Chinese, and Korean speakers to ensure that visitors can understand the rules clearly at the moment of enforcement. The multilingual approach is intended to reduce confusion and make communication easier between officers and tourists. Fines can be paid on the spot using cash, credit card, or QR code payments.

The campaign is also being promoted with a direct message aimed at visitors: “if you throw trash, you lose cash.” The slogan is part of a wider effort to make anti-littering rules more visible and easy to understand in a busy urban environment. Authorities say the goal is not only to penalise behaviour but also to encourage awareness of local rules.

Japan’s wider approach to waste management also helps explain the context behind the policy, especially for visitors unfamiliar with local systems. Public rubbish bins are relatively rare in many cities, including Tokyo, and this is partly linked to past security concerns. After the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack, carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, authorities removed many public bins from train stations and busy public spaces to reduce the risk of hidden explosives or dangerous materials. Similar security concerns in later years reinforced this approach, and bins have never fully returned to public areas at the same scale.

@tsuru_ton_tan99 日本で1番、夜が眩しい街 Shibuya #渋谷 #tokyo #japan ♬ オリジナル楽曲 – yama_vv

As a result, people in Japan are generally expected to carry their rubbish with them until they find appropriate disposal points, such as convenience stores or designated facilities. While this system is widely understood by residents, it can be confusing for visitors who expect public bins to be readily available in urban areas. In a government survey, more than 20% of tourists said the lack of bins was their biggest inconvenience when travelling in Japan.

The littering issue in Shibuya reflects a broader pattern across Japan as tourism reaches record levels. Popular destinations such as Kyoto and areas near Mount Fuji have also experienced congestion, waste problems, and pressure on local communities. In some cases, local authorities have taken unusual steps to manage the impact of visitor numbers, including cancelling events that became too difficult to organise safely.

National authorities are now introducing a range of measures to manage the situation, including higher tourism-related taxes and crowd-control tools that help distribute visitors more evenly. Digital systems are also being developed to show real-time crowd levels in popular areas, helping tourists avoid peak congestion times. These policies are part of a wider effort to balance tourism growth with livability in cities like Tokyo. In Shibuya, the new fines represent one of the most visible examples of this shift toward stricter and more direct enforcement in public spaces.

The Japanese phenomenon of Pokémon is known for its transformative qualities, having started out in 1996 as a video game and grown into a multimedia franchise encompassing merchandise, movies, theme parks, trading cards, and TV shows—and now airports.

Noto Satoyama Airport, a domestic hub on the Noto Peninsula of Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture, is being temporarily rebranded as a Pokémon attraction, complete with decorations and events themed around the world-famous multi-billion-dollar universe.

Also sometimes known as Wajima Airport for its nearest city, Noto will evolve for the next three years into the “Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport.” Between 7 July 2026 and 30 September 2029, over one hundred pocket monsters of the “flying type” will be spottable in and around the airport’s four storeys. Central characters such as Pikachu will naturally take the limelight in the hub’s atrium, sitting aboard an aircraft surrounded by birds, insects, and dragons.

The transformation is taking place as part of an initiative to rehabilitate tourism-dependent Noto in the wake of the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that struck the peninsula in 2024, killing over 600 people, and destroying or severely damaging around 30,000 buildings, including the airport.

Those regeneration efforts will include a new airport logo and a bespoke “Sky of Hope” artwork portraying characters soaring together with an aeroplane. The observation deck, renamed “Pikachu’s Village,” will depict numerous Pikachu set against a satoyama-inspired rustic landscape. The chosen imagery,” the airport explains in a statement, “features numerous Pokémon flying through the sky, dazzling light, and sparkling rainbows”, and “expresses a longing for the sky, the joy of flying freely, and the ‘hope’ of embarking on a new journey.”

Restaurants in the airport will also get in on the action, offering Pokémon-themed refreshments in the form of pancakes and drinks, while retail shops will be selling Pokémon souvenirs, such as luggage tags, keychains, and clothing, as part of the fun. Eagle-eyed visitors will also notice Pokémon-themed manhole covers nearby, and they can even indulge in a Pokémon hot spring footbath if desired.

Visitors can also access original short videos on their smartphones while in the airport, including a story called “Fly, Bagon!” about a blue Rock Head wingless Dragon who yearns to fly.

The redevelopment project has been conceived with the support of the Pokémon With You Foundation, which came to life after the 9.1-magnitude earthquake—Japan’s worst ever— in 2011. The foundation works to support communities in disaster zones.

Japan Airlines will begin testing humanoid robots for ground handling tasks at Haneda Airport from May 2026. The trial will run for around two years and is the first initiative of its kind in Japan. The airline is working together with GMO AI & Robotics to explore how this technology can support daily airport operations. The main goal is to reduce the workload for employees and improve efficiency in one of the country’s busiest airports.

The project is designed as a phased experiment rather than a simple short-term test. Teams will first analyse airport operations in detail to identify where robots can be used safely and effectively. This will be followed by repeated trials that simulate real working conditions on the ground. The idea is to gradually build a system where robots and humans work together in a structured way. In the long term, the partners hope to create a more sustainable model for airport operations.

The robots will initially be used for physically demanding tasks such as loading and unloading cargo containers and moving equipment on the tarmac. These machines are built in a humanoid form, meaning they can move in a way that is similar to humans and operate in spaces designed for people. This allows them to work within existing airport infrastructure without major changes. During demonstrations, a robot measuring around 130 centimetres was seen carefully pushing cargo onto a conveyor belt and even waving to a colleague. The robots can operate for two to three hours before needing to recharge, and they are currently controlled remotely by human operators, mirroring human movements.

One of the main reasons behind this initiative is the growing labour shortage in Japan’s aviation sector. The country is dealing with a declining working-age population while at the same time welcoming a rising number of international visitors. More than seven million tourists arrived in Japan in just the first two months of 2026, adding pressure to airport services. Ground handling work is often physically demanding and requires long shifts, making it harder to attract and retain staff. By introducing robots, airlines hope to reduce the physical strain on workers and maintain smooth operations.

The issue goes beyond aviation and reflects a broader national challenge. Japan may need more than 6.5 million foreign workers by 2040 to meet its economic goals as the domestic workforce continues to shrink. This creates political and social pressure, as immigration levels remain a sensitive topic. In this context, automation and robotics are increasingly seen as part of the solution. The use of humanoid robots in airports is therefore not only about efficiency, but also about responding to long-term demographic changes.

Japan Airlines will trial humanoid robots for baggage handling and aircraft cleaning at Tokyo's Haneda Airport starting in May, citing workforce shortages and rising tourist numbers pic.twitter.com/XJ9ImcN3UO
— Reuters (@Reuters) April 29, 2026

The technology behind the robots combines artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and remote operation. This allows them to perform tasks that require both strength and precision while still being supervised by human operators. GMO Internet Group, the parent company involved in the project, has even declared 2026 as the “First Year of Humanoids”. The aim is to accelerate the use of this technology across different industries, not just aviation. Airports are being used as a testing ground because they present real-world challenges that require adaptable solutions.

Robots are already present in some Japanese airports, where they are used for tasks such as security patrols and customer service. The introduction of humanoid robots for ground handling is, therefore, a continuation of an ongoing trend rather than a completely new development. What makes this project different is the focus on physically demanding back-end operations that have traditionally relied on human labour. These tasks are less visible to passengers but are essential for keeping flights running on time.

Japan’s labor shortage is so severe it burned through its entire 5-year quota for foreign restaurant workers in record time.

The food service sector (restaurants, hospital/nursing home meal services) hit its 50,000 cap early – new Specified Skilled Worker visa applications…
— World of Statistics (@stats_feed) April 26, 2026

Despite the growing role of automation, human workers will remain essential in airport operations. Certain responsibilities, especially those related to safety and decision-making, cannot be handled by robots. Officials involved in the project have made it clear that the goal is to support employees rather than replace them. By taking over repetitive and physically heavy tasks, robots could help improve working conditions and reduce fatigue. Human oversight will continue to be necessary to ensure that all operations meet strict safety standards.

The trial at Haneda Airport reflects a wider shift in the global aviation industry. Airports around the world are exploring new technologies to handle increasing passenger numbers and improve efficiency. These include biometric boarding systems, automated baggage handling, and autonomous vehicles. Humanoid robots could become another tool in this transition, especially in locations where labour shortages are becoming more severe. Their ability to work in human-designed environments gives them an advantage over more specialised machines.

In the future, the role of these robots could expand beyond cargo handling. Japan Airlines is already considering using them for tasks such as cleaning aircraft cabins and operating ground support equipment. As the technology improves, robots may become more autonomous and capable of interacting more naturally with both staff and passengers. If the current trial proves successful, similar systems could be introduced at other airports in Japan and beyond. This would mark an important step towards a more automated and flexible airport environment.

The price of Japan’s popular Japan Rail Pass, widely used by international tourists for unlimited train travel across the country, will increase from 1 October, according to railway operator announcements.

The change marks the first revision to the pass in three years and will affect passes sold to foreign visitors through official channels and travel agents. The Japan Railways Group (JR Group) said the adjustment reflects cumulative fare changes across several of its member companies, following earlier increases in domestic ticket prices.

JR Group will raise prices for the Japan Rail Pass from October 1, 2026, but only for passes purchased through overseas sales agents. The last major Japan Rail Pass price update was in October 2023.

Prices on the official Japan Rail Pass online reservation service will remain… pic.twitter.com/oMeT6c9aru
— Japan Station (@JPNStation) April 9, 2026

Under the new pricing structure, an ordinary seven-day adult pass will rise by 3,000 yen to 53,000 yen (about €284), while the Green Car premium version will increase by 4,000 yen to 74,000 yen (about €395). Longer-duration passes are also affected: the 14-day ordinary pass will increase to 84,000 yen (€520), and the 21-day version will rise to 105,000 yen (€650) for adults in standard cars, and by 7,000 yen to 147,000 yen (€910) for those travelling in premium seats.

The JR Group has said the price revision follows earlier adjustments made by individual regional rail companies, including East Japan Railway, West Japan Railway, Hokkaido Railway and Kyushu Railway. These changes have contributed to a broader reassessment of the nationwide pass pricing.

The Japan Rail Pass is a key product for inbound tourism in Japan, offering unlimited travel on most JR-operated services, including many shinkansen bullet trains, as well as rapid, express and local trains. It is available only to foreign visitors entering Japan under “temporary visitor” status and is typically purchased before arrival at the designated sales offices and through official agents overseas, as well as via the official online platform, Japan Rail Pass Reservation.

The increase has sparked renewed attention among travel planners, as it follows a major price hike implemented in 2023. However, JR Group has also indicated that online purchasing incentives may remain temporarily unchanged to encourage direct bookings through official channels.

Japan’s record tourism boom has heightened concerns over overtourism, prompting authorities to introduce measures to manage crowds and visitor behaviour. Access gates and fees have been imposed at major attractions, including Mount Fuji and several shrine sites. At the same time, Kyoto officials have urged tourists to respect the privacy of the local geisha community. The city also introduced Japan’s highest hotel tax in March 2026 as pressure on infrastructure continues to grow.

Meanwhile, popular destinations are facing mounting environmental strain. At Oshino Hakkai, a well-known village famous for its eight natural pools, authorities have called on visitors to stop throwing coins into the water after the practice was found to cause damage to the fragile ecosystem, underscoring the broader challenges linked to surging tourist numbers.

The impact has led to stricter actions in some areas, including the cancellation of a cherry blossom festival near Mount Fuji after years of overcrowding and disruptive behaviour. The decision reflects wider efforts across Japan to balance booming visitor numbers with the need to protect local communities and cultural heritage.

Visitors to a series of snow water ponds near Mount Fuji in Japan have been asked to stop throwing coins into their sacred waters due to concerns over the environmental impact.

The eight pools in the village of Oshino Hakkai at the foot of the country’s highest peak offer scenic views and reflections featuring the volcano’s iconic form. They are fed by an underground reservoir of Mount Fuji’s meltwater and historically followers of the Fuji-ko faith, who worship the peak, bathed there in a purification ritual before climbing it. The waters were also once said by locals to bring insight into moral dilemmas.

Now, though, they are dominated by tourists who have imported coin-tossing customs that they believe bring good luck. The pond beds are said to be littered with coins, even though official workers have removed around 50,000 of them to date in a battle that has seen signs erected pleading in multiple languages for visitors to cease the practice.

“It’s an endless cycle — as soon as we pick them up, more are thrown in,” an official spokesperson said. The village has even set up offering boxes to receive the coins instead of the pools.

The way coins erode is one of the main worries due to potential pollution of the ponds’ pristine waters, though, to date, water quality tests have found no environmental residues.

Coin-tossing or offering for luck at tourist sites occurs in many places around the world. Concerns were raised in 2025 at the Giant’s Causeway, a renowned Northern Irish UNESCO World Heritage site estimated to be up to 60 million years old, that is being damaged by tourists determined to leave their mark on the place by wedging coins that then rust between the rocks, resulting in a plea from the UK’s National Trust for visitors to “leave no trace.”

One of the most famous examples of coin-based tourist rituals happens at Rome’s Trevi Fountain, where coin throwing was immortalised by the hit 20th-century movie theme Three Coins in a Fountain. Municipal authorities in the Italian capital regularly collect the coins and distribute them to charitable causes. But Japan has no such native tradition.

The problem has reportedly worsened since 2013, when the ponds were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting more visitors to the area. As part of efforts to clean up Mount Fuji and deal with overtourism, its trails now come with an access fee. But the issue continues. An annual cherry blossom festival had to be cancelled this year amid mounting pressure on locals.

The negative effect of the UNESCO designation has been in the news elsewhere recently, after villagers in the Slovakian hamlet of Vlkolínec complained about being outnumbered more than 7000-to-one by the 100,000 annual visitors that descend upon the area since the UN body included it on its list. “UNESCO has turned us into a tourist ‘zoo.’ This supposed honour has become not just a burden – but a living nightmare,” one villager told press.

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has completed a trio of luxury villas in Japan using rammed earth construction, marking the studio’s first built project in the country and a significant addition to the growing network of high-end “NOT A HOTEL” properties.

Named NOT A HOTEL Setouchi, the development is located on the remote island of Sagishima in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea and comprises three villas embedded into a 30,000-square-metre coastal site. The project also includes a beachfront restaurant and private beach, with the architecture designed to merge closely with the island’s mountainous terrain.

“The archipelago around Sagishima is like a Japanese landscape painting. Steep rolling hills covered in lush green vegetation erupt from the tranquillity of the Seto Inland Sea. The four pavilions are conceived as extensions of the dramatic topography,” said BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.

The villas are constructed using soil sourced directly from the site, applied through the traditional rammed earth technique, allowing them to appear carved out of the landscape, smoothly integrated into the hillside’s natural topography.

BIG arranged the three four-bedroom residences along the natural contours of the hillside, following existing infrastructure and unfolding “like a ribbon” across the terrain. Each villa is named according to the degree of panoramic view it offers — 180, 270 and 360 — reflecting the project’s emphasis on framing vistas of the surrounding archipelago.

© Kenta Hasegawa

The design draws on both Scandinavian and Japanese architectural traditions, combining contemporary forms with references to traditional elements. Large glass facades reinterpret shoji screens, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. The roofs are topped with low-reflective solar tiles that reference traditional Japanese roof forms, while adjustable facades and overhangs are used to support passive cooling strategies. Rainwater is collected on site and reused for landscape irrigation.

The homes are organised as open-plan living spaces, with Japanese-style baths, storage set within separate skylit pods, and heated infinity pools. Subdued colour palettes are paired with black slate flooring that references the proportions of traditional tatami mats.

“The project stands as a remarkable convergence of Danish design and philosophy, traditional Japanese architecture, and the technical sophistication and construction precision of contemporary Japan,” said Ryohei Koike, BIG associate.

Each villa responds to its specific position on the site. The 360 villa sits at the highest point and is arranged as a ring around a central courtyard, offering uninterrupted views in all directions. The 270 villa frames a wide panorama and incorporates outdoor leisure areas including a pool, sauna and firepit, while the 180 villa follows the curvature of the shoreline at the water’s edge.

Bjarke Ingels described the project as an exploration of contrasts between openness and enclosure. “On one hand, each home is like an inhabited view, open and extroverted,” he said. “On the other, their spinal walls outline a private and protected space — open only to the sky.”

Landscape restoration formed a key part of the masterplan. Indigenous vegetation was harvested and temporarily removed during construction and later restored, including native grasses, olive trees and lemon trees, in an effort to return the site to its natural state.

The project represents a milestone for BIG, not only as the studio’s first completed work in Japan, but also as a synthesis of cultural influences. According to the studio, the villas seek to balance “traditional and modern” approaches, forming a striking architectural statement while pushing forward the luxury hospitality sector in Japan.
