In a press release announcing the closure of the base, Ryanair called Berlin the most failing airport in Europe. According to the Irish low-cost airline, air traffic has collapsed by almost 30% from 36 million passengers in 2019 to 26 million in 2025. Moreover, Ryanair points out the airport’s 50% fee increase since 2019.

Furthermore, according to Ryanair, aviation fees in Germany as a whole have steeply increased since 2019. The carrier lists three financial pain points in particular:

• Germany’s aviation tax, going up from €7.30 to €15.50 per passenger
• Security fees, doubling from €10 in 2024 to €20 per passenger by January 2028
• ATC fees, trebling from €1 to €3.30 per passenger

“German aviation is broken. The Govt. admits that it is uncompetitive, yet there is no strategy to cut aviation taxes or high airport fees – despite Ryanair warning that Germany would lose traffic, connectivity, jobs and trade. Since 2019, Ryanair has been forced to close its bases in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart (resulting in the loss of 13 based aircraft) in addition to stopping all flights to Dresden, Leipzig and Dortmund,” said Ryanair DAC CEO Eddie Wilson.

The press release goes on to say that the seven aircraft previously stationed at Berlin will be reallocated to lower-cost airports in other EU states as of October. The carrier will prioritise countries such as Sweden, Slovakia, Albania, and Italy. Flight crew will be offered alternative positions in the Ryanair network across Europe.

“Ryanair has many other lower cost airports, and zero aviation tax countries across Europe competing for scarce capacity growth, all of whom are taking action to reduce access costs by abolishing aviation taxes, lowering airport charges and reducing ATC fees. With no meaningful cost reform in Berlin or in Germany nationally, we have no alternative but to switch aircraft from Germany to other more competitive markets elsewhere in Europe while Germany and Berlin Airport continue to fail,” Eddie Wilson continued.

Contradicting statements

As one of the arguments for the shutdown of its Berlin base, Ryanair also mentions a planned 10% increase in airport fees at Berlin Airport. However, according to the airport organisation, that percentage has never been communicated or projected.

“We are surprised by Ryanair’s announcement at this point in time. We are engaged in ongoing negotiations with the airlines. An increase in airport charges is not planned,” the airport stated in a post on X.

The carrier’s announcement comes shortly after Germany’s Finance Ministry of the Federal Cabinet said it would be rolling back flight taxes to 2024 levels.

Since 23 April 2026, the new terminal and two extra piers (H and J) have been officially open. Designed to handle 19 to 25 million passengers a year, Terminal 3 will gradually take over those airlines currently operating out of Terminal 2.

Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Korean Air, Kuwait Airways, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Saudia, and T’Way Air switched terminals starting from the beginning, while a schedule can be consulted on Frankfurt Airport’s website to know when the other airlines will follow. A so-called Sky Line people mover transports passengers to the other terminals in eight minutes.

According to the airport, Terminal 3 was designed in such a way as to “view the airport not merely as a place of transit, but as a space for experience.” Therefore, the building was conceived much like a city, with piers, gates, and lounges considered as the equivalent of a city’s streets and squares.

“These days airports have become a destination in their own right. In fact, they typically receive more visitors than many city centres. This makes it even more important for airports to also perform some of the same functions as cities. We’re making this happen in Terminal 3,” German architect Christoph Mäckler, who was in charge of the project, explained.

Artsy airport

In order to elevate the general feeling of the terminal even further, Frankfurt Airport selected an Artist in Residence to give the building an artistic touch. The chosen artist is Frankfurt-based Tobias Rehberger, a professor at the Städelschule and winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. His works centre around the theme of transition, which stands central at airports across the globe. Slogans including ‘Say Hello To Goodbye’ or ‘In 2 Days Tomorrow is Yesterday Somewhere Else’ are focal points in his art.

“These neutral spaces often sap your energy. You sit at the gate and feel as though you’re wrapped in cotton wool. However, when you turn these ‘non-places’ into places, a sense of identification arises. You could say, ‘Let’s meet there.’ This completely transforms the experience, both psychologically and mentally, and even physically. Art can take this a step further by triggering thought processes and opening up new perspectives, not merely being decorative,”  commented Tobias Rehberger.

Of course, Terminal 3 also features a number of culinary and shopping outlets. The building has two food courts, a bar, and a selection of restaurants such as EL&N London, Sophia Loren Restaurant, Origin Bar + Eatery, and Burger King. Standard Duty Free shops, as well as more upscale options including BOSS, FALKE, and LONGCHAMP, complete the offer.

Berlin, a city that spent €13.1 million on cleaning in 2025, is hoping for a similar impact. The first year of its scheme will focus on the German capital’s waterways in particular, where problem littering covers a spectrum from the illegal dumping of bulky waste to flicking cigarette butts into the open.

Similar schemes have been implemented in Fiji, where visitors are invited to “give back” one hour of “Loloma time” to the community. Hawai’i has mooted the same with a “only a stranger for a day” concept, arguing that tourists increasingly want to feel a part of the places they visit, and that participating in good deeds triggers feel-good hormones and deeper connections.

Critics point out that people go on holiday to relax and escape obligations, as well as highlighting the role that residents, not visitors, should play in keeping their hometowns clean. But there remains some emphasis on local responsibility too in the approach Berlin is taking. It is targeting cigarette butt culprits with fines that have been increased more than three-fold to a minimum of €250, going up to €3,000 in some cases. A suite of flight cancellations followed the two-day strike call, with major hubs in cities including Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart experiencing short notice disruption to up to 75% of schedules.

The misery for flyers comes on top of the previous week’s walkouts by cabin crew deemed “completely disproportionate,” by Lufthansa brand chief Jens Ritter. Even though union representatives have claimed there had been an effort not to disrupt seasonal holidays, the strikes took place Orthodox Easter and are estimated to have hit 580 flights and 72,000 passengers by the morning of Friday, 10 April.

“Despite a deliberate decision not to take strike action over the Easter holidays, no serious offers were forthcoming,” union President Andreas Pinheiro said. “During this period, there was neither a response nor any discernible willingness to engage in talks on the part of the employers,” he explained.

In the wake of recent disruption across the Middle East, Lufthansa appears to be trying to prioritise routes in the region, committing to destinations including Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. For other customers, free rebooking, refunds, or Deutsche Bahn tickets are available for affected services between 11 April and 21 April.

The strikes are the third to take place in the space of a month, with the industry predicting a summer of disruption ahead as the recent industrial action by both pilots and crew across Lufthansa subsidiaries is partly a symptom of wider restructuring taking place inside the Group. Its Cityline operations are slated to close down by the end of 2026, when they will switch to its City Airlines umbrella—a move that critics have previously said is designed to get around aircraft size limits. In the light of the controversy and feared job losses, Verdi Union has secured better working conditions, retirement packages, and a pay rise worth up to 35% by spring 2029 for around 500 employees.

A place of pilgrimage, it is Germany’s most-visited landmark, welcoming six million people per year, according to official records. Until now, entry to the cathedral has been free, although visits to its tower cost adults eight euros, and combo tickets, for both the tower and the treasury, are priced at €12, with reductions available.

But from an unspecified date later in 2026, the cathedral is set to bring an admission fee into force. While the future entry cost has not been confirmed, The Guardian has cited estimates of between €12 and €15. Worshippers would not pay, but this is not expected to cause a shortfall, since the cathedral’s dean, Guido Assmann, told German news agency dpa that tourists account for 99% of visitors.

But artist Gerhard Richter, who designed bespoke, 20-metre, stained glass windows for the cathedral in 2007, disagrees. Richter, now in his ninth decade, told dpa he supports an entrance charge and noted that the cathedral would not be alone in introducing one.

Richter is right. While some of the world’s most famous churches do not charge to enter, such as St Peter’s in Rome, or Notre Dame in Paris which proudly boasts it is “open to all, freely and without charge,” others do charge an admission, including Gaudi’s iconic Sagrada Família in Barcelona, where the €26 entrance fee has been going towards ongoing construction works for years. This year, however, it is going in the opposite direction to Cologne, opening its doors for nothing on some dates and offering a 50% discount on others, to celebrate its centenary.

Seven rounds of negotiations and a final mediation proposal reportedly failed to produce a satisfactory response from Lufthansa. UFO has called on cabin crew at Lufthansa CityLine to join the strike, citing concerns over the planned closure of CityLine operations. According to the union, staff and flights are being transferred to a new subsidiary without a negotiated social plan. UFO also described CityLine as a “victim of tariff escape” and said the strike is necessary to protect staff from potential job insecurity. The union reports that 98.3% of its CityLine members voted in favour of strike action. 

The unions have criticized Lufthansa management for its approach to negotiations. According to UFO, the company has repeatedly refused to compromise and has treated employees “like children,” explaining matters in a patronizing way while blocking meaningful discussions. This, the union says, contributed to the escalation and reinforced the need for strike action. 

The strike is planned to last the full day, from 00:01 to 23:59 local time, and affects not only commercial passenger flights but also deadhead flights, ground transport, standby duties, and certain contractual ground operations performed by cabin crew. Some additional roles, such as trainers or team leaders, are reportedly excluded from strike duties for specific tasks. According to UFO, this demonstrates a structured and deliberate approach rather than a spontaneous walkout. 

The labour action comes amid financial and operational pressures at Lufthansa. The airline reported that its adjusted operating profit fell sharply in 2024 compared with the previous year, and the airline has announced plans to cut around 4,000 jobs in Germany, representing roughly 4 % of its workforce. Rising costs, aircraft delivery delays, and repeated labour unrest have reportedly contributed to the tensions. 

Passengers travelling on Thursday are advised to expect significant disruption. Both unions emphasized that the strike is intended to address pension security, job protection, fair treatment of staff and not to punish travellers. Officials urge passengers to check their flight status, allow extra time for airport procedures, and follow updates from the airline.
