Egypt has introduced two new additions to its railway network: Siemens Mobility’s Velaro high-speed train and the Desiro HC regional train.

Designed for high-speed express service, the Velaro will operate on Egypt’s future network, connecting Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Cairo, Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean coast.

The Desiro HC will serve the same corridor as a regional service, connecting Cairo with Alexandria and Ain Sokhna with intermediate cities along the route.

Together, these trains will transform travel across the country for locals, tourists, and businesses. They represent a significant milestone for Egypt, strengthening its position as a leader in modern infrastructure in Africa and the Middle East.

The Velaro has been tailored to meet Egypt’s operational demands. It can reach speeds of up to 250 km/hour, has space for 489 passengers and is built to withstand desert conditions, with upgraded filtration and cooling systems. Siemens stated that they used Altair’s advanced simulation tools to optimise the train’s ‘digital twin’, which is a high-fidelity virtual model used to test performance prior to physical manufacturing.

The Desiro HC regional train, which was also built by Siemens Mobility, completed its inaugural run on the newly built tracks to the west of Cairo, near the 6 October dry port. With a storage capacity of 260,000 containers and five rail lines, the port forms an integral part of the Green Line, which is the 660-kilometre first phase of the network currently under construction, dubbed the ‘Suez Canal on Rails’.

Once completed, it will connect Ain Sokhna with Cairo, Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh along Egypt’s northern coast. According to Siemens, the new high-speed rail system will increase Egypt’s freight capacity by 46%.

Each Desiro train can carry 849 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h. They feature air conditioning, ETCS Level 2 signalling protection and full wheelchair accessibility, expanding mobility to a wider segment of the population. The high-speed network is being developed by Siemens Mobility in partnership with Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction.

Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Industry, Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, said the debut of the two trains marked “a defining moment in Egypt’s transport modernisation strategy”, adding that the project would “redefine passenger experience, reduce travel times and boost connectivity between cities”.

Roland Busch, president and CEO of Siemens, said that Egypt was “witnessing the future of mobility take shape”, describing the public unveiling of the trains as ‘a powerful symbol of progress and partnership’ and a testament to the country’s ambitions for sustainable mobility and economic growth.

Overall, Egypt will build three new lines totalling over 2,000 kilometres, linking major urban centres and serving 90% of its population. Once completed, it will be the world’s sixth-largest high-speed rail network by length. Siemens will also supervise and maintain all rolling stock across the system, including the Velaro, Desiro, and 41 Vectron locomotives.

Morocco became the first African country to have a high-speed train when it linked Tangier and Casablanca in 2018, with speeds of up to 320 km/hour.

Other countries on the continent are following suit: Nigeria, for example, has announced plans for a multi-billion-dollar, 4,000-kilometre high-speed network, while the African Union is advancing a long-term continental vision through its African integrated high-speed railway network under Agenda 2063.

The opening ceremony, presided over by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, was attended by royalty and dignitaries from around the world, including the kings of Belgium and Spain, the crown princes of Oman and Bahrain, and heads of state and ministers from Europe. The invitations, which were sent in miniature gold-gilded sarcophagi containing papyrus scrolls, set the tone for a celebration of pharaonic grandeur. This celebration featured a full orchestra, a choral performance and a light show over the pyramids. El-Sisi also received a touch of Danish humour when the Danish delegation presented him with a LEGO model of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Egypt hailed the opening as a rebirth of civilisation and a long-awaited symbol of national pride. The $1 billion museum, which spans 90,000 square metres within a 50-hectare complex (roughly the size of 100 football pitches), aims to become a major economic driver, attracting up to eight million visitors a year – close to the number welcomed by the Louvre.

Key highlights set to draw the crowds include the 4,500-year-old funerary vessel of Khufu, one of the oldest and best preserved, and the full contents of Tutankhamun’s tomb displayed together for the first time since their discovery in 1922.

The building itself is an architectural marvel and the result of international collaboration. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects and realised by the Belgian firm BESIX, its geometry mirrors the surrounding landscape. The structure slopes upwards towards the pyramid peaks and vast triangular windows, as well as recurring triangular motifs, frame sweeping views of Giza. “Everything is variable, everything changes,” said project engineer De Kinder, describing the structural challenges that slowed construction.

Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supported the conservation work, training local experts in state-of-the-art restoration.

Dr Tarek Tawfik, president of the International Association of Egyptologists and former head of the GEM, told the BBC that deciding how best to display the previously unseen artefacts had been a significant curatorial challenge.

The museum holds some 100,000 artefacts in total, spanning from the pre-dynastic to the Greek and Roman eras, making it the world’s largest archaeological museum.

Tour guides around Giza are already bracing for the crowds. ‘When the Tutankhamun collection opens, you can imagine – the whole world will come back; he is the most famous king of all antiquity,’ said Ahmed Seddik, a guide and aspiring Egyptologist.

The curatorial layout combines chronological and thematic displays, exploring topics such as women, communities, literature, and daily life, in order to broaden the narrative beyond pharaohs and queens. “These aspects are often forgotten,’ Ahmed added. ‘It’s very important to bring those voices into the story.”

Dr Zahi Hawass, Egypt’s former long-serving Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, told the BBC that the opening of the museum was the culmination of a dream, proving that “Egyptians are equals of foreign Egyptologists when it comes to excavations, preserving monuments, and curating museums.”

Dr Tawfik echoed his words, saying that “colleagues from around the world have been in awe of the fantastic conservation work that has been done. As well as ancient Egyptian history, we are showcasing modern Egypt – because it’s Egypt that built this museum.”

Hawass added that he “now I want two things. First, museums must stop buying stolen artefacts; second, I want three objects returned: the Rosetta Stone, the Dendera Zodiac and the Bust of Nefertiti.”

The Netherlands has already announced it would return some artefacts to Egypt.

In 2024, Egypt’s Housing Minister pledged that the project would preserve the environmental, visual, and heritage character of the area’s pristine nature.

The reality, however, is proving to be more problematic. The Jebeleya Bedouin community, known as the guardians of St Catherine’s Monastery, is strongly opposed to the development. Their homes and eco-camps have been demolished with little to no compensation to make way for luxury hotels, villas, and shopping bazaars. Even cemeteries have been removed to make way for a car park.

British traveller Ben Hoffler told the BBC the project is a ‘top-down’ development that serves ‘the interests of outsiders over those of the local community’, fundamentally changing the Bedouin’s place in their homeland.

At the heart of the conflict stands St Catherine’s Monastery, the world’s oldest active Christian monastery, founded in the sixth century. Long protected from overtourism, the monastery and the nearby Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa) – where, according to the Bible and the Quran, God spoke to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments– are revered by Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. The monastery houses a small mosque and boasts one of the world’s greatest collections of early Christian manuscripts.

Visitor numbers to the Sinai have fluctuated due to political instability, terror attacks, the Arab Spring, the pandemic, and, since 2023, the Gaza war. The administration currently views luxury development at St Catherine as a means to increase hard currency earnings, with an objective of drawing in 30 million visitors by 2028. However, this push for ‘industrial tourism’ is in conflict with the local Bedouin community, who until recently managed the region’s tourism.

In an interview with the BBC, Egyptian journalist Mohannad Sabry explains that the Bedouin have been “pushed out – not just pushed out of the business, but physically pushed back… into the background”. Work on the construction site at St Catherine’s is expected to be staffed by Egyptians from other parts of the country.

The situation has also created tensions with Greece, which views the monastery as part of its spiritual heritage. The Archbishop of Athens, Ieronymos II, has described the move as an ‘existential threat’, and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem has reminded investors that the holy site, over which it has ecclesiastical jurisdiction, was granted a letter of protection by none other than the Prophet Muhammad himself. He described the monastery as “an enshrinement of peace between Christians and Muslims, and a refuge of hope for a world mired by conflict”.

In 2023, UNESCO requested that Egypt halt work until a conservation plan could be agreed upon. Instead, it was forced to add the site, in July, to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. King Charles, patron of the St Catherine Foundation, described it as ‘a great spiritual treasure that should be maintained for future generations’.

For now, construction continues. If the project unfolds as planned, the fragile landscape of the Sinai and its rare biodiversity will be reshaped forever, and St Catherine’s appeal – its remoteness and sanctity – will be lost forever.

Since 2019, British-Egyptian Alaa Abd El-Fattah has been detained in Egypt. In December 2021, he was sentenced to five years in jail on account of spreading false news and harming Egypt’s national interest. However, after an 18-month investigation, an independent UN panel called the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) found on Wednesday 28 May 2025 that the activist is being illegally detained by the Egyptian government. According to their report, there are multiple reasons for the fact that his detention is considered illegal: lack of a warrant, lack of reasons for his arrest, lack of a fair trial, exercise of freedom of expression, and discriminatory detention.

Following the UN report, a letter was sent to The Times, co-signed by former UK ambassador to Egypt John Casson. The document urges the British government to take action and deploy the full range of tools it has to protect British citizens, including issuing an official travel warning urging people not to travel to Egypt. According to the letter, those who are detained by the police state in Egypt can not expect a fair process nor support from the British government as Egypt is refusing to give the UK consular access to Alaa Abd El-Fattah.

“Egypt can’t have it both ways. It pretends to be a friend and depends on flows of British tourists to keep its economy afloat. It needs to discover that kind of partnership is not compatible with abusing our citizens, and blocking our embassy from carrying out the most fundamental consular actions on their behalf,” the letter writes.

In an interview with the BBC, John Casson says he would advise friends and family against travelling to Egypt, as they would be taking a big risk in his opinion. 

Official travel advice for Egypt

At the time of writing, the UK’s official travel advice for Egypt was last updated on 20 May. It advises against all travel to within 20 kilometres of the Egypt-Libya border, except for the town of El Salloum, where it advises against all but essential travel. People are also advised against all travel to the North Sinai Governorate. 

Furthermore, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to the northern part of the South Sinai Governorate, beyond the St Catherine-Nuweibaa road, except for the coastal areas along the west and east of the peninsula, against all but essential travel to the Ismailiyah Governorate east of the Suez Canal, against all but essential travel to the Hala’ib Triangle and the Bir Tawil Trapezoid, and against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions. Some tourist hotspots, such as Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, are exempt from the advice.

Reviving ancient wisdom with modern tools

The site has long stood as a symbol of ancient engineering genius. Today, that same spirit of innovation and vision is being channelled into a long overdue revamp, in an effort to adapt the site to the expectations and realities of the 21^st-century tourism industry.

Visitor numbers have surged for decades, drawing millions of visitors from around the world, and placing unsustainable pressure on both human and physical infrastructure. Traffic jams at the main entrance near the historic Marriott Mena House – with the lobby’s gigantic window framing perfectly the great pyramid of Khufu – became the norm, while complaints about animal mistreatment, poor facilities and scam vendors piled up. 

Tourist dissatisfaction had been simmering for years, but the turning point came from social media and a wave of viral reviews on platforms like Reddit, TikTok and TripAdvisor. Videos and posts harshly criticised the disorder around the pyramids, sparking fears that Egypt’s economy – and vital tourism sector, which contributes around 10% of the country’s GDP and attracts 17.5 million visitors annually – could suffer long-term damage. With the government aiming to reach 30 million by 2030, the risk of having its reputation tarnished became impossible to ignore.

A private solution to a public problem

To address the issue, the government commissioned Orascom Pyramid Entertainment, a private Egyptian company, to overhaul visitor services. A new welcome centre, featuring restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, is already operational, alongside a fleet of eco-friendly electric buses, introduced to significantly reduce noise pollution and improve air quality, and digital ticketing, meant to cut waiting time and congestion.

Controversy on the ground

Yet, the implementation of the project is not without its share of controversies.

Tourists have criticised the lack of logistical coordination during the early pilot phase and the long waits under the unforgiving Egyptian sun. Meanwhile, street vendors and animal rental operators, many of whom have been working around the Plateau for generations, protested against their forced relocation to designated parking areas, claiming the new locations would hurt their livelihoods. 

In response, Naguib Sawiris, founder of Orascom Investment Holding, warned vendors who refused to move would be banned stating on X: “The well-being of the public and preservation of this treasure is far more important than catering to the interests of 2,000 individuals who have caused harm to the country for years”…

So, what is changing?

The main changes already in place or underway include new access points via the Cairo-Fayum Road to streamline tourist flow; restoration of surrounding historical structures; expansion of online services; introduction of co-friendly electric buses to replace animal transport; stricter regulation of commerce to eliminate scams and aggressive sales tactics. 

Preserving the past and readying for the future

Long gone are the days when Louis Armstrong played his trumpet before a near-empty Sphinx, or when Maurice Béjart captured the timeless magic of the Giza Plateau. Built deliberately on the outskirts of the city, the Plateau today finds itself engulfed by Cairo’s sprawling expansion – a reality that continues to challenge its delicate balance between preservation and modernisation. 

If the overhaul is planned as meticulously as the pyramids were built, these changes will usher in a new era of positive experience for visitors while protecting Egypt’s unique cultural legacy.

The Red Sea Governorate reported that the submarine had 50 people on board, including 45 tourists from various nationalities (Sweden, Russia, India, Norway) along with five Egyptian crew members. 

The company operating the Sindbad submarine, Sindbad Submarines, is a tourism company based in Hurghada, Egypt, specializing in underwater excursions along the Red Sea. The business owns two submarines capable of diving 25 meters underwater.

Red Sea Province Governor Amr Hanafy explained that the submarine, owned by an Egyptian was properly licensed as well as the captain of the crew. Sindbad Submarines has not publicly commented on the recent accident. However, the enterprise has suspended all submarine trips due to the investigation.

This incident is not the first tragedy to raise concerns about safety for tourists in the Red Sea. To address this matter, on 6 February 2025, the UK government issued a safety warning, which read: “Over the last 5 years, 16 accidents have occurred involving liveaboard dive vessels operating in the Red Sea. Three liveaboard dive boats have been lost in the last 21 months that resulted in numerous deaths including some UK nationals. Today, the MAIB has published safety advice aimed at people considering a dive boat holiday in the Red Sea.”

These concerns stem from previous accidents in the region. For example, on 25 November 2024, a tourist coat called Sea Story capsized the Rea Sea coast near Marsa Alam, Egypt during a multi-day diving expedition. Four people lost their lives in the incident, while 33 survivors were rescued with minor injuries.

Later in the same year, on 29 December 2024, a shark attack at the same resort resulted in the death of an Italian tourist and left another injured. The attack had taken plan in deep water, outside the designated swimming area near the jetties.

Moreover, in 2023 a motorboat caught fire near the diving resort of Marsa Shagra, north of Marsa Alam, which was carrying 15 British tourists and 14 Egyptian crew members. While 12 tourists and the entire crew were saved, three British tourists, who were initially listed as missing, were later confirmed dead.

It will house over 100,000 artefacts from Egypt’s world-famous past civilisations, including treasures belonging to perhaps the best-known Pharaoh of all, the boy-king Tutankhamun, whose iconic gold, lapis lazuli, obsidian and turquoise death mask will be on display, once it is transferred from its current home in downtown Cairo’s Egyptian Museum. It will be the final object to make the journey.

Partially open already since October 2024, GEM has already welcomed some lucky guests to a dozen of its galleries. History lovers and tourists have set foot inside the breathtaking triangle-motif glass and alabaster structure and been greeted by a vast 3,200-year-old statue of Ramesses II.

A boat to eternity

Among the experiences on offer, contemporary and interactive public spaces such as tree-filled plazas, eight restaurants and a 3D cinema will rub shoulders with items such as the world’s only Hanging Obelisk and a Solar Barque – a ship-like vessel entombed over 4500 years ago with Pharaoh Khufu in order to carry him alongside the Sun God Ra on his voyage into eternity.

As well as providing a fitting home for Egypt’s significant trove of ancient artefacts, the museum will also act as a research centre and preservation lab with perhaps one of the best locations in the world. Its experts, as well as an expected five to seven million guests per year will be able to stand at its southeast end and gaze at unobstructed views of the pyramids beyond.

One of the most anticipated museum openings for years, GEM’s official launch will be marked by a countdown of events organised by United Media Services Company, one of the largest media entities in the& Arab region, which will be promoting the inauguration across its multiple channels and platforms.

Tickets are already available online and should only be purchased from the official Visit GEM website. They start at EGP1,200 (around €22.60) for adults.

This year’s iteration of Forever is Now includes, for the first time, artists from Asia. It also encourages both visitors and artists to become modern-day archaeologists, using creativity as their primary tool. Fourteen artists from the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America have contributed paintings, sculptures, and installations.

“The backdrop of the pyramids allows for a dialogue that merges ancient civilization with the contemporary, depicting the true essence of artistic development through the ages,” said Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, Forever is Now’s curator and founder of Art D’Égypte.

A memorable element of the exhibition is Four Temples by Ik-Joong Kang, a South Korean artist, based in New York. This arrangement of four structures symbolizes the hope for harmony and peace through communication, despite challenges of conflict and division. The work offers a hands-on experience through excavation activity. Participants have to dig through the sand to find two types of buried bookmarks inscribed with “love” and “peace” in four languages, which they can take with them.

Another notable installation, QUADRIVIUM, explores the ancient study of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and sound. Created by UK artist, Chris Levine, the piece integrates geometry and astronomical ratios, reimagining these principles through contemporary art. Through this sculpture, Levine’s goal is to honour ancient Egyptians’ mastery of science and invite visitors to reflect on the universal truths encoded within the Giza Plateau, one of the most sacred sites on Earth.

The GEM has been over 20 years in the making since one of the largest architectural competitions the world has ever witnessed took place in 2002. The winning design, a chamfered triangle in plan, sitting two kilometres northwest of the Pyramids, was originally due for completion in 2013, but the venture has suffered various setbacks, from political uprisings to fires.

Largest archaeological museum in the world

The Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, is reported to have approved a partial opening that could see sections of the GEM open by mid-month. Set to be the largest archaeological museum in the world, boasting over 81,000 square metres of floorspace, it will eventually unite 100,000 artefacts in 12 main halls classified by dynasty. The Tutankhamun collection, including the mummified king’s world-famous gold and blue death mask, will eventually be moved there too, from its current home in the existing Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square in central Cairo.

Playing a part in Egypt’s so-called “Giza 2030” master plan, the new museum is intended to be an international showcase for Egypt’s archaeological treasures on a scale worthy of their significance. A large date-palm-filled plaza will lead visitors to a translucent alabaster facade and, inside, they will be greeted by a 3,200-year-old, 11-metre statue of Ramesses II, so gigantic that the museum’s atrium had to be built around it.

New museum, new airport, new wave of Egypt-mania

Despite Foreign Office travel advice that notes the risk of terrorism in Egypt, the launch of the GEM is likely to engender a new wave of enthusiasm for ancient Egypt, a century after the discovery of King Tut’s tomb first caused a stir. Moreover, solar eclipse chasers will be well aware by now that the Valley of the Kings is set to be one of the world’s most extraordinary backdrops to 2027’s celestial event.

In anticipation of a hoped-for explosion in visitor numbers, Cairo’s brand new Sphinx International Airport has been constructed to bring people to Giza, the Pyramids and GEM itself while avoiding transit through Cairo’s busy streets. And also ready to cash in, near Luxor, a flurry of new tombs and attractions have opened on the Nile’s west bank, giving access to parts of the Valley of the Nobles and the Valley of the Workers that have been closed until now.

A year ago a new airport – Sphinx International – opened east of Cairo. It allows easy access to Giza, the Pyramids and GEM without travelling through the Egyptian capital.
