Held from 11 to 13 May and organised by the European Spas Association (ESPA), the summit brought together government institutions, tourism organisations, medical professionals and international experts to discuss new trends, innovation and cooperation opportunities in the sector. Against this backdrop, the Azerbaijan Tourism Board highlighted the country’s natural healing resources and long-term strategy to develop a competitive health tourism offer.

Showcasing natural resources and spa infrastructure

Representing the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, Deputy Chairman Teymur Suleymanzada took part in panel discussions and bilateral meetings, presenting Azerbaijan’s potential to international stakeholders.

The country’s offer includes a combination of mineral springs, therapeutic muds, favourable climate conditions and a growing network of spa and recreation facilities. These assets are increasingly being positioned as part of a broader strategy to attract visitors seeking prevention, recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Tourism growth supports long-term strategy

This broader strategy is also reflected in Azerbaijan’s tourism performance. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the country welcomed more than 2.57 million foreign visitors in 2025, representing a 2.1% increase year on year, while international visitor spending reached ₼3.4 billion.

These figures underline the growing attractiveness of Azerbaijan as an international destination and support its ambition to diversify further into health, wellness and medical tourism.

Participation in the summit also allowed Azerbaijan to gain insights into European approaches to health tourism, including quality standards, certification mechanisms and destination management models.

As the sector evolves towards more evidence-based and personalised health experiences, aligning with European benchmarks is seen as a key step in strengthening Azerbaijan’s competitiveness and credibility on the international stage.

Strengthening international cooperation through ESPA

A significant outcome of Azerbaijan’s presence in Varna was its closer engagement with the European Spas Association. During the summit, the Azerbaijan Tourism Board joined the organisation as an advisory member.

The move is expected to facilitate the exchange of expertise, encourage the adoption of advanced practices and open the door to new partnerships with European destinations and stakeholders.

As discussions at the summit highlighted the rising importance of prevention, longevity and sustainable health tourism, Azerbaijan’s participation reflects a broader ambition to integrate into this expanding global market. Held on 23 April at the prestigious Cercle Royal Gaulois, the exhibition, titled The Colors of Azerbaijan: Land of Multiculturalism, showcases the work of Azerbaijani photographer Etibar Jafarov and offers visitors an insight into the traditions, lifestyles and coexistence of the many communities that make up the country.

“A lived reality”

Opening the evening, Vaqif Sadiqov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium said multiculturalism in Azerbaijan is not merely an idea, but an everyday reality.

“Azerbaijan has, for centuries, stood at the crossroads of civilisations,” he told guests. “Our geography has shaped our history, but it is our people who have shaped our identity, an identity built on coexistence, mutual respect, and openness.”

He added that representatives of different religions and ethnic groups continue to live together peacefully across the country, with mosques, churches and synagogues functioning side by side.

“This is a conscious choice, one that reflects our belief that diversity strengthens nations rather than divides them,” he said.

Photography as cultural diplomacy

The ambassador described the exhibition as part of Azerbaijan’s broader efforts to promote understanding through culture and international engagement.

“Through international forums, partnerships and cultural diplomacy, we seek to build bridges of understanding, trust and collaboration,” Sadiqov explained.

The photographs on display capture scenes of daily life, religious heritage, traditional customs and the human stories behind Azerbaijan’s multicultural society. According to organisers, the collection has previously been exhibited in Finland and Spain, including Barcelona.

Guests attending the opening included members of the diplomatic corps, cultural figures and representatives of Brussels’ international community. The evening also featured contributions from Azerbaijani musicians studying in Belgium.

Strengthening ties through culture

The exhibition reflects Azerbaijan’s continued use of cultural initiatives abroad to deepen people-to-people ties with European audiences.

By hosting the event in Brussels, home to the European institutions and one of the world’s most international cities, organisers placed dialogue, diversity, and mutual understanding at the centre of the conversation.

The evening offered visitors an opportunity to discover Azerbaijan’s story through photography, using culture as a universal language that connects communities across borders.

The calls come as new international regulations come into effect in the region, requiring large infrastructure projects such as dams, gas and oil facilities, pipelines, power stations, transport, and water works to be publicly assessed and approved by all affected states.

The Protocol on Environmental Impact Assessment under the Tehran Convention used to be known as the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. It contains marine safeguards and sustainable development principles now adopted by  the five Caspian coastal nations – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

But discussing the issues at the UN, Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, said there remain challenges around the governance of the Caspian Sea. Delegates noted the ongoing need for better partnership working, environmental monitoring, data collection, and information exchange, all subject to the fifth protocol of the Protocol, still under negotiation.

It is not the first time Azerbaijan has engaged on the issue. In October 2025, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, urged Caspian neighbours to cooperate and coordinate measures to halt receding water levels and preserve ecosystems. “The Caspian Sea is facing a number of serious environmental challenges,” he said at the time. “One of the most pressing problems is the shallowing — the rapid decline in the water level — which poses both ecological and economic threats.”

The Caspian Sea – the world’s largest landlocked body of water – has suffered a two-metre drop in water level between 1996 and 2023. Experts predict a loss of between five and 18 metres by 2100. The damning and exploitation of the feeder Volga River, combined with reduced rainfall have been held to blame. Other infrastructure projects include Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan’s new trans-Caspian fibre optic cable that aims to strengthen digital ties between Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

Azerbaijan’s green stance meanwhile is being held up as an effort to be seen to spearhead international environmental action in the region and beyond. In President Aliyev’s words, “the Caspian Sea is no longer merely a body of water but has become a symbol of our shared responsibility and the necessity for united action.”

Previously, tourists and locals wanting to visit the mountain town of Gabala had to rely on buses and cars to do so. However, as Azerbaijan is looking to promote sustainable transport and regional tourism, a regional train service has been installed, linking the ski resort and nature destination of Gabala to Azerbaijan’s second-largest city, Ganja.

Since 12 January 2026, national rail transport operator ADY has started to operate the second regional train service outside of the nation’s capital. The new route covers approximately 139 kilometers and takes 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete. Every day, a train will be leaving Ganja at 10:10 am, returning from Gabala at 6:00 pm. Between Ganja and Gabala, trains stop at Goran, Yevlakh, Laki, and Aghdash.

For those wanting to travel between Baku and Gabala, a transfer at Laki station has been installed. Travellers are able to embark on the train destined for Gazakh in Baku, which will put them at Laki station at 10:50 am, while the new train for Gabala leaves at 11:12 am. At night, the Gabala–Ganja train stops at Laki station at 6:45 pm, while the connection to Baku leaves at 7:02 pm.

The connection between Ganja and Gabala is assured by Swiss Stadler trains, which are divided into four classes: Standard, Standard+, Business, and First Class. A basic fare ticket costs travellers 4.80 manats (€2.45). Tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices or on the official website of Azerbaijan Railways.

What to do in Gabala?

Whether visiting during winter, summer, or anything in between, the mountain town of Gabala is well worth a visit when touring the country. During the coldest months of the year, it is the perfect destination for those who want to do some skiing and snowboarding in the Caucasus Mountains.

A historic first for Azerbaijani football

The 2027 tournament will be the first men’s World Cup event ever staged in Azerbaijan. It will also mark the first time that Azerbaijan’s men’s national team takes part in the final stage of a FIFA World Cup competition. For the country, the event represents both a sporting breakthrough and a statement of confidence in its capacity to host large-scale global events.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup is one of the most prestigious competitions in international youth football and has been held every two years since 1977. It is widely regarded as a platform where future global football stars emerge on the international stage.

The most recent edition concluded in Chile in October 2025, with Morocco lifting the trophy. Argentina remains the most successful nation in the tournament’s history with six titles, followed by Brazil with five. According to the presidential decree, Azerbaijan’s Organising Committee will coordinate preparations related to infrastructure, logistics, security, and overall event management, ensuring the championship is delivered in line with FIFA standards and international best practices.

Preparations are expected to focus on stadium readiness, training facilities, transport infrastructure, accommodation capacity, and fan services. The joint hosting of the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup with Uzbekistan reflects an established pattern of cooperation between the two countries that extends beyond sport. Moreover, at the Global Tourism Forum (GTF) held in Brussels on 20-21 October 2025, Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan’s landlocked exclave located between Iran and Armenia, was showcased through a captivating exhibition by photojournalist Aris Setya. This display highlighted Nakhchivan’s unique landscapes, drawing attention to this lesser-known region.

“Today tourism is not only a cultural exchange but also an economic driver,” said Vaqif Sadıqov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium, during a conference hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium on 21 October 2025. The event attracted a diverse audience, including diplomats, tourism professionals, and members of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Belgium, eager to explore Azerbaijan’s tourism potential.

“We have been actively working to showcase our country to the world,” said Rashad Aliyev, Deputy CEO of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board. “Through international road shows, exhibitions, and conferences, we have been inviting travel experts, journalists, and influencers to experience Azerbaijan for the first time.”

Virtual journey through Azerbaijan

To showcase Azerbaijan’s breathtaking landscapes, diverse culture, and rich cuisine, Fidan Akhundzade, Director of international markets and business events at the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, led guests on a virtual tour of the country’s most recognized locations. “Tourists can feel the Oriental atmosphere in a dynamically developing modern country,” she explained.

Akhundzade highlighted Azerbaijan’s six main tourism routes, offering cultural immersion, historical tours, eco-tourism, and wellness retreats. She also spotlighted key tourism destinations such as Gobustan and Khinalig village. “Gobustan is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where visitors can see more than 6,000 petroglyphs and rock carvings revealing ancient life in Azerbaijan’s territory,” she said.

Khinalig village, as explained by Akhundzade, was recognized by UN tourism as one of the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism in 2025. “It is a unique place to visit, where tourists can feel the atmosphere of our villages and experience authentic traditions” she added.

Tourism offerings and opportunities

Aliyev emphasized that every tourist finds something that surprises them due to Azerbaijan’s richness, which includes everything “from the historic streets of Baku to the peaceful mountain villages.”

Azerbaijan offers high-end boutique hotels for travellers as well as guest houses and hostels. “Boutique 19 Hotel opened in September this year ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix,” shared Jihane Mamouri, Chief Commercial Officer of Absheron Hotel Group.

Ergun Salmanov, Managing Director at ULU Hospitali Group, outlined the opportunities the hotels and restaurants they operate offer. “Our resort in Qakh features rooms and suites overlooking the mountains. We also offer access to a gym, indoor pool, tennis court, and family entertainment zones,” Salmanov said. From the hotels guests can enjoy hiking, off-road tours, and cultural excursions to nearby villages. “For international visitors, these experiences provide something unique and authentic that connects them with local life,” he explained.

Beyond the adventures and local encounters, the country’s hospitality scene mirrors this diversity — offering stays that suit every type of traveller. “Azerbaijan is very diverse in terms of services, and we can cater to different budgets,” further added Aliyev. He noted that only 25% of Azerbaijan’s hotels are four- or five-star, while the rest offer more budget-friendly options.

Future ambitions

“Today, Azerbaijan is investing in the future of tourism, upgrading its infrastructure to make every visitor’s journey smooth and memorable. Combined with our simplified visa system, visiting Azerbaijan has never been easier,” underscored Aliyev.

The country is actively developing MICE and adventure tourism. “We have a huge potential, especially in the MICE sector,” Aliyev said. In 2024, Azerbaijan hosted COP29, and at the beginning of 2026, the country is set to host the World Urban Forum in collaboration with UN-Habitat. “We really want to develop the MICE tourism and bring international events and conferences to us, regardless of their size.”

Azerbaijan is also positioning itself as a global winter sports destination. During the conference, Aliyev announced that “the International Ski and Snowboard Federation and the Azerbaijan State Tourism Agency have agreed on a landmark partnership that positions the country as a snow sports global destination partner for the next five years.” In 2026, Shahdag Mountain in Azerbaijan is set to host the European Championship and the World Cup in Ski Mountaineering, aiming to further develop Azerbaijan’s winter sports infrastructure.

Shahdag is the primary ski resort and part of the broader strategy to develop winter sports infrastructure. Current plans include the expansion of the slopes and designing additional facilities.

With Azerbaijan working towards designing more tourism experiences and diversifying its portfolio of offerings, the country is steadily becoming a global hub for travel lovers and adventure seekers alike. The global recognition that it receives further amplifies its position, solidifying its place as a must-visit destination in the Caucasus. From luxury hotels to ski resorts and rejuvenating wellness retreats and ancient traditions in villages, Azerbaijan has something to offer to any type of tourist.

An autonomous province of Azerbaijan, Nakhchivan is a landlocked region whose eponymous capital has a history going back to at least 1500 BCE. The semi-desert terrain is bordered by the Zangezur Mountains near Armenia and the Aras River on its frontier with Iran. 

Nakhchivan revealed through the lenses of Travel Tomorrow over 20-21 October 2025, allowed GTF delegates and speakers to discover the province’s stark beauty and multicultural influences through the compelling photography of Travel Tomorrow’s photojournalist, Aris Setya.

Nature’s gifts were on display from the tranquillity of the Göygöl Lake in the Ordubad Valley, to the crystalline highland streams of Batabat as they weave through volcanic rock forms. Taking viewers below ground, Setya conveys the healing mineral-rich air of the Duzdag Salt Cave, while rising proudly above the plains, Llandagh Mountain stands as a symbol of Nakhchivan’s strength and resilience, the eye led by a winding road.

Cultural heritage captured by Setya includes Alinja Castle, a once-impenetrable seventh-century medieval fortress perched on the rocky crags above the Aras Valley, as well as the mysteriously neat forms of Noah’s Tomb, a sacred site believed to be the resting place of the biblical figure. Meanwhile, the interior of the Heydar Mosque is stunning with golden chandeliers illuminating the structure’s exquisite geometry.

Modernity is not neglected here either. Nakhchivan’s city centre, enchantingly lit by night, is featured too, as is the interior of the State History Museum, complete with its painted sky dome.

The show was supported by the Azerbaijan Tourist Board and the Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium. As Azerbaijan pushes to attract international arrivals and bets on tourism as a driver of prosperity, further events to put the country on the map are taking place elsewhere in Europe this autumn.

Since 13 October 2025, a B2B roadshow initiative taking place in Barcelona, Budapest, Frankfurt, Prague, Vienna, and Zurich has been bringing together 20 trade representatives from Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Barbecuing is generally associated with the United States and more particularly Kansas City, home to over 100 barbecue restaurants and the world’s first Museum of BBQ – offering a guided exploration of the rich culture that envelops barbecue. However, the particular art of cooking actually originated in what is now Germany and Eastern Europe. From there, it was exported to all corners of the world.

For the time of a weekend, the small village of Meysari in Azerbaijan’s Shamakhi was transformed into an international barbecue centre on 4 and 5 October 2025 during the so-called International Barbecue Festival. Supported by the Shamakhi District Executive Authority, the Nasimi Vineyards Complex, the Abqora restaurant, and international culinary judge Sahib-David Israfilov, aka Don David, the International Barbecue Festival was able to attract celebrated chefs from over 30 countries. Those present include Willem Vink, President of the World Barbecue Association (WBQA); Christopher Sandford, chief judge at the WBQA; and Thomas Gugler, former President of the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) and personal chef to the King of Saudi Arabia.

Cultural exchange

The Vice President of the WACS, Uwe Friedrich Herbert Micheel, Don David, and Willem Vink welcomed both chefs and visitors during the welcome ceremony on 4 October 2025. According to them, the purpose of the International Barbecue Festival was to strengthen cultural exchange while showcasing Azerbaijan’s hospitality, cuisine, and cultural values.

During the festival, visitors could get acquainted with the art of barbecuing through different setups. At pavilions all throughout the village, chefs presented their skills and culinary culture, while visitors were able to get a taste of their best creations. A multitude of restaurants and brands were represented at the festival, thus allowing visitors to get to know cuisines from around the world. Family-friendly cooking masterclasses made it possible for those who were present to acquire some barbecue skills themselves.

The International Barbecue Festival also hosted a team cooking competition. All teams were required to prepare a dish following a specific recipe provided by the organisation, and the winners were awarded certificates, medals, and even a trophy after being judged on flavour, cooking techniques, and presentation. Day 1: Nakhchivan City

1. Heydar Aliyev Museum

You can begin your itinerary by exploring Nakhchivan City. First on your list should be visiting the Heydar Aliyev Museum, where you would be able to learn more about the life and activities of the former president of the country. Exhibits cover his life, from childhood to leadership, showcasing portraits and beautifully crafted carpets.

You can also look at documents from the period when he held leadership positions, including signed letters. Additionally, you can examine the service phone he used in his office alongside other stationery.

2. Momine Khatin Mausoleum

The second stop on your tour is the Momine Khatin Mausoleum, one of the oldest monuments in the East, built to honour a woman. Dating back over 800 years, it was constructed for Momine Khatin, the wife of Atabeg Shamseddin Eldeniz, the ruler of the Eldiguzid state. The tomb is an example of traditional Azerbaijani national architecture that has endured for centuries. It is also one of the most celebrated works by the world-renowned architect Ajami Nakhchivani. Rising 25 metres above the ground, the mausoleum features a circular interior and a decagonal exterior. Today, its original patterns continue to reflect the splendour and antiquity of Nakhchivan.

What’s more, Momine Khatin is one of Nakhchivan’s mausoleums included in the UNESCO Tentative List for their outstanding architectural ensemble, illustrating a significant stage in history.

3. Khan’s Palace

Within walking distance of the Momine Khatin Mausoleum is the Khan’s palace, one of the most iconic buildings in the region. Designed in the Eastern architectural style, it was commissioned by Kalbali Khan Kangarli, father of Nakhchivan’s then-khan.

For a short period, the structure served as a carpet museum, and since 2010, it has housed an exhibition dedicated to Azerbaijani history, adorned with richly ornamented stained-glass windows. Visitors can explore various items such as traditional attire, old furniture, and beautifully crafted kitchen utensils.

4. Nakhchivan Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex

From the Khan’s palace, head to Nakhchivan’s Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex, where you will also be able to visit a few more iconic landmarks. Built in the seventh century, the castle served as a defence fortification until the middle of the 17^th century. Currently a museum, it exhibits a variety of household items, including ceramics from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age, copper tools and weapons, as well as national costumes and carpets.

5. Noah’s tomb and Heydar Mosque

While in the area, it is worth visiting Noah’s tomb, where local legend holds that his remains were once kept. Moreover, the Nakhchivan Castle History and Architecture Museum Complex offers a stunning view of Heydar Mosque, whose vibrant colours and intricate floral motifs make its architecture truly captivating. If you have the chance, make sure to visit the mosque itself to admire its exquisite details up close.

6. Duzdag Salt Mountain

At the end of the day, stop by Duzdag Salt Mountain, currently transformed into a medical tourism facility. Established in the 1970s, the centre receives visitors from many countries, coming to treat their respiratory diseases. The therapy used there is called speleotherapy. It is a type of salt therapy that uses the natural climate and salty air of underground caves. Found in places like Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, these salt caves are a popular alternative treatment for people with asthma.

Day 2: Batabat and Seven Sleepers’ Cave

During the second day, it is worth leaving the city and experiencing some of the natural wonders of Nakhchivan. After you’ve had breakfast, you can head to the Ashabi Kahf Shrine Religious-Cultural Monument Complex, which is approximately 12 kilometres east of Nakhchivan City.

The complex is centred around the Ashabi Kahf, also known as the Seven Sleepers’ Cave. According to local legends, seven young people who believed in another god took refuge in this cave and slept for over 300 years. This refers to the Islamic ‘People of the Cave’ story from the Quran, also known in Christian tradition as the Seven Sleepers, making it a significant pilgrimage site for local Muslims. Today, the complex is a popular pilgrimage site for local Azerbaijanis who come to make wishes and pray.

The site is equipped with many tables where visitors can relax and enjoy a cup of tea before making the walk up to the cave. The complex also features an open-air mosque where believers can pray peacefully. The entire site, with its network of stairs, allows tourists to savour the beauty of the surrounding mountains and take the walk at their own pace.

From the Seven Sleepers’ Cave, you can take a one-hour drive to the Batabat region. Near the lush area is Bichanak village, which can be reached from Nakhchivan by bus. From the village, the lake area is easily accessible by taxi or even on foot. Rich in mineral water springs, the lakeside is a popular weekend picnic spot among local Nakhchivanis. Famous for a lake with a floating peat island, the spot is ideal for nature lovers as the landscape is covered with lush greenery and blossoming flowers.

Day 3: Alinja Castle and Orubad City

On your last day, it is important to visit Alinja Castle, one of the most iconic spots in Nakhchivan. The best time to do this is in the morning, as once you reach the top, there’s no real escape from the sun. Honestly, dedicating half a day is more than enough, as the place can be explored without a rush in a few hours. The climb to the top is usually the most difficult part and is highly likely to take the longest time. This also gives time to visitors to ponder how much harder the ascent would have been if there were no stairs.

Alinja is popular among locals but highly undiscovered by international tourists. When visiting, there is also the chance for you to be the only visitor there.

After visiting Alinja Castle, you can go to the city of Ordubad, which is the second biggest in the autonomous republic. You can have lunch there and visit different museums, including the house-museum of the academic Yusif Mammadaliyev, whose most famous works are related to the catalytic processing of fuel oil. He is also the founder of petrochemistry (a branch of chemistry focused on chemicals made from petroleum (oil) and natural gas).

Moreover, when visiting Ordubad, it is worth stopping at the Geysariyye Monument, a site that is now a historical and ethnographic museum, exhibiting various items related to the everyday life of people in the past. When there, you can see silkworks, old weapons, and iron tools that were hung on the doors of houses. One was dedicated to women and the other to men, allowing the house-owners to recognise easily whether they are visited by a man or a woman.

Currency: The currency is the Azerbaijani manat, which is equal to €0,51.

Cash vs. card: Most restaurants and supermarkets accept card payments, but it’s wise to carry some cash in case the card machine fails. Cash is also handy for street vendors or small souvenirs.

Language: The local language is Azerbaijani. Having someone in your group who speaks Azerbaijani—whether a guide or a local friend—can transform your trip, making it easier to connect with locals, navigate daily life, and uncover experiences that might otherwise stay hidden.

Connectivity: Azerbaijan is outside the EU, so staying online means either getting a local prepaid SIM with data or using an international eSIM app like Airalo, handy for maps or translations.

A journey long awaited

The first train departed from Baku Railway Station at 7:10 am on Saturday 30 August, arriving in Aghdam shortly before noon. For the hundreds of passengers onboard, the journey represented far more than a rail trip; it was a symbolic reconnection with a city and region once cut off due to conflict.

Passenger trains last operated between Baku and Aghdam in 1993, travelling via the Baku–Khankendi–Baku route. That service was suspended following the occupation of the region, leaving Aghdam inaccessible by rail for 32 years. The resumption of services is therefore regarded as a major achievement under Azerbaijan’s “Great Return” programme, which aims to restore life and infrastructure in liberated territories.

The Baku–Aghdam service will run weekly on Saturdays. Trains leave Baku at 7:00 am, reaching Aghdam at 11:53 am, while return services depart Aghdam at 6:20 pm, pulling back into Baku at 10:55 pm. Along the route, travellers can board at several stations, including Bilajari, Ujar, Laki, Yevlakh, Barda, Kocharli, and Tezekend.

The journey is operated with modern FLIRT trains manufactured by Swiss company Stadler, a notable upgrade from the rolling stock that served the route three decades ago. These state-of-the-art trains promise improved comfort, safety, and reliability, essential factors for attracting both commuters and tourists.

Travellers are offered four distinct classes of service: Standard, Standard+, Business, and First Class. Ticket prices are designed to be affordable, starting at 12 Azerbaijani manats (about €6.40) for shorter journeys, and 12.80 manats (about €6.80) for travel to the Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex.

A multimodal hub in Aghdam

Much of the excitement around the train’s return centres not only on the railway itself but also on the brand-new Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex. Inaugurated by President Ilham Aliyev earlier this year, the complex is the first multimodal transport hub of its kind in Azerbaijan.

Spanning nearly 8 hectares, the facility is designed to handle between 800 and 1,000 rail passengers daily, with the bus terminal catering for up to 1,500 people. A key feature is Azerbaijan’s first fully enclosed railway platform, allowing travellers to transfer seamlessly between train and bus services, regardless of the weather.

Beyond transport, the complex includes an array of amenities: spacious waiting halls, ticket offices, a library, shops, entertainment areas, restaurants, and rest zones. Parking facilities, bicycle stands, green areas, and electric vehicle charging stations further demonstrate a commitment to creating a modern, sustainable hub.

For visitors, the new complex is more than just a transport point. It symbolises Aghdam’s rebirth. Once labelled a “ghost city” due to its destruction in the 1990s, Aghdam is being actively rebuilt, with the terminal acting as a gateway for future tourists keen to explore the city’s evolving landscape.

Reconnecting a region

From a travel perspective, the restored route has enormous potential. It re-establishes public transport accessibility to the Karabakh economic region, opening the door to new tourism opportunities. For international travellers, the prospect of boarding a modern train in Baku, a city known for its striking blend of historic architecture and futuristic skyscrapers, and disembarking in a resurgent Aghdam adds a compelling new itinerary option.

The government also views the project as a catalyst for broader connectivity. Plans are underway for an Aghdam–Khankendi railway line and a new multimodal hub in Khankendi, scheduled for completion by 2026. Together, these projects are expected to create a robust regional transport network, stimulating both domestic mobility and cross-border trade.

Azerbaijan’s strategic location at the crossroads of the East–West and North–South international transport corridors means such investments resonate far beyond the local level. By integrating Aghdam into this network, the railway contributes to positioning Azerbaijan as a vital hub for both passengers and freight.

Tourism potential

The resumption of the Baku–Aghdam train invites travellers to experience a part of Azerbaijan that, until recently, was inaccessible. For cultural travellers, Aghdam holds deep historical significance, while for others it represents a symbol of resilience and renewal. The convenience of weekly train services, combined with the amenities of the new terminal, lowers the barrier for both domestic and international visitors to explore.

Moreover, with ticket prices kept at an accessible level, the service encourages spontaneous travel. A Saturday excursion from Baku to Aghdam, complete with a modern rail journey, a visit to the transport hub, and exploration of the city’s ongoing reconstruction, could quickly become a popular option for locals and tourists alike.
