The Grand World Odyssey, sailing aboard Grand Princess, is scheduled to cover about 37,300 nautical miles and call at 61 destinations in 31 countries across five continents. Passengers will be able to join the voyage in Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne, while Dover will provide an additional embarkation point for travellers beginning in the UK.

The itinerary links ports in the South Pacific, the Americas and Europe. Planned features include two full passages through the Panama Canal’s newer locks, scenic cruising near Easter Island and Pitcairn Island, and calls at cities including New York, Miami, Reykjavik, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. Tahiti and Auckland are also among the listed destinations.

Princess says the voyage will include eight late-night stays and one overnight port call, with Lima (Callao), Lisbon, and New York cited among the extended visits. The company also lists access to 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The ship is due to cross both the Equator and the International Date Line twice during the journey.

The world cruise forms part of a regional season involving Grand Princess, Emerald Princess, and Royal Princess. Across more than 90 departures and over 70 itineraries, cruises will range from two to 46 nights and depart from Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth (Fremantle), and Sydney.

Regional options are expected to include trans-Tasman sailings, journeys along the Kimberley Coast and itineraries visiting Queensland, Tasmania, and southern Australia. Princess has also scheduled 17 Round Australia voyages during the season. Selected cruises will offer late-night or overnight calls, giving passengers additional time in port.

Emerald Princess is set to return to Australia for the first time since the 2016–17 season. The programme also restores homeport operations in Melbourne and expands the line’s New Zealand offering. Destinations highlighted by the company include Fiordland National Park, Phillip Island, Kangaroo Island, and the Kimberley Coast.

Jim Berra, Princess Cruises’ chief commercial officer, said the schedule would give guests “more ways to discover remarkable destinations, immerse themselves in different cultures and see the world in new ways.”

For the regional market, the deployment broadens the range of departure ports beyond Sydney and Brisbane. Adelaide, Melbourne, and Fremantle are included in the schedule, while Auckland remains the New Zealand gateway. The mix of short cruises and longer itineraries is intended to serve both domestic passengers and international visitors combining a cruise with a land stay.

The 129-night sailing is notable for its Australian round-trip format rather than for introducing a new ship or destination region. Named after Australia’s first female commercial pilot, Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport (WSI) has been under construction for seven years.

The new airport aims to relieve pressure on Kingsford Smith, which is facing capacity constraints and a night-time curfew imposed to protect nearby residents from aircraft noise.

With its 3.7 km runway and 24-hour operations, WSI has ambitious expansion plans, with the potential to handle 82 million passengers a year, which would propel it to become Australia’s main gateway.

Situated over 60 km west of Sydney’s city centre, the airport will offer easier access to popular destinations like the Blue Mountains, Liverpool, Campbelltown and the Featherdale Wildlife Park.

Jetstar is set to launch domestic services to Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and Air New Zealand’s inaugural international flight to Auckland is scheduled for 26 October.

From 23 November, Singapore Airlines will introduce daily flights to Singapore, offering additional connections for travellers from Europe, including the UK. 

Vietjet Air and Fiji Airways will follow with routes to Ho Chi Minh City in January 2027 and Nadi in March.

Will flying from WSI be cheaper?

According to The Guardian, which compared fares for December travel, Jetstar return flights to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport started at A$187 from WSI, compared with A$258 from Kingsford Smith. Flights to the Gold Coast were also cheaper, but Brisbane fares were more competitive from the existing airport.

International fares were generally more competitive from Kingsford Smith, although Fiji Airways offered potential savings on flights to Nadi.

Getting to the airport could also make a considerable difference. While a new metro connection is under construction, a free shuttle will link WSI with St Marys railway station every 30 minutes.

For travellers coming from central or eastern Sydney, taking a taxi or using a ride-hailing service could significantly increase the overall cost.

Driving from central Sydney takes around an hour, compared to approximately 20 minutes to Kingsford Smith. However, WSI’s 6,000-space car park offers substantially cheaper parking, at least while introductory discounts remain in place.

The airport is also targeting premium passengers. Its new 80-seat Rayleigh Lounge, designed by COX Architecture, is set to open in November and will initially serve eligible Singapore Airlines passengers.

With an open kitchen, bar, private shower suites and views of the Blue Mountains, the lounge draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape and will eventually accommodate 130 guests.

As well as improving passenger convenience, the new airport is expected to stimulate the economy of Western Sydney, create jobs, and improve business connections with overseas markets.

Figures released in June by Australia’s Department of Infrastructure show that the project has already created more than 12,800 jobs during construction, around half of which went to local workers. Over A$500 million has also been invested in more than 360 businesses across Western Sydney.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced that the Australian Border Force would recruit an additional 100 compliance officers to detain or encourage the departure of the approximately 77,000 individuals currently residing in Australia without a valid visa.

Burke explained that “consequences” for overstaying would be reinstated in order to combat “disingenuous” asylum claims.

Speaking at the National Press Club last Thursday, he said that, until 2015, Australia had a routine process whereby people who had overstayed their visas were taken to detention centres. According to him, this prompted them to “organise their own flight and leave” within a few weeks.

As part of the expansion, the government plans to add 250 detention beds and is considering repurposing a former quarantine facility in Melbourne.

Burke has, however, rejected comparisons with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “This is not the sort of operation that some people have seen on TV happening in other countries”, he said.

To close any remaining loopholes, the government said it would also tackle so-called “visa hoppers”, foreigners who move from one type of temporary visa to another to prolong their stay in Australia.

Under the proposed changes, a “No Further Stay” provision would prevent visitors arriving on a tourist visa from applying for another type of visa while in the country.

International students seeking a new study visa would also have to demonstrate that they are progressing towards higher qualifications, rather than moving between lower-level courses simply to extend their stay.

Other reforms include preventing family members from accompanying international students and introducing a ballot system for working holiday visas.

The detention measures have drawn immediate criticism from human rights groups, which have raised concerns about their legality and the safety of those held in detention centres.

Rebecca Eckard, director of policy at the Refugee Council of Australia, told AFP that the move might not even be legal as “it is being framed as punitive to change behaviours”, adding that “the use of punitive detention is not permitted under Australia’s immigration act”.

The groups have also accused the country’s far-right One Nation party of being responsible for the hardening of conditions, a claim that the ruling Labor government has denied.

While Australia remains a very popular tourism destination, attracting millions of visitors each year, the number of visa overstayers has grown from 64,000 in 2016 to about 77,000 in 2026.

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Matt Thistlethwaite clearly summarised the measure and its intended deterrent effect in comments to broadcaster News24:

“Once the word gets around, ‘hey, I overstayed on my tourist visa for a couple of weeks, I got picked up and I spent a couple of weeks in immigration detention, it’s not a nice place, I’m going home’. Once that gets around, then we think that obviously that deterrence will ensure that people abide by the conditions,” he said.

The measures have also raised concerns within the tourism industry.

Erin McLeod, chief executive of the Australian Tourism Industry Council, which represents thousands of small tourism businesses, warned that the government’s approach could have damaging consequences.

“I don’t think it does our reputation as a welcoming destination any good and can become quite damaging – tourism is an important part of the Australian economy,” she told AFP.

As well as improving the passenger experience and supporting airlines through investment in terminals, connections and sustainable operations, the works are expected to increase the hub’s economic activity by 56% to around AUD$70 billion per year and support up to 204,000 jobs by 2045.

In fact, the airport points out that the contribution to the economy from a single international A380 service is AUD$329 million, supporting 2,100 jobs, while the airport’s overall contribution to GDP is expected to represent around 1.5% of Australia’s annual GDP.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said: “As Sydney grows, Sydney Airport must grow with it,” and hailed the approval of Master Plan 2045 as providing “a clear pathway to plan for future demand and invest in the infrastructure Sydney will need.”

He added that the plan includes “a framework for growing sustainably and responsibly, minimising environmental impacts and working closely with the communities surrounding the airport.”

Similarly, the country’s Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said: “Kingsford Smith is Australia’s busiest airport, it must remain fit for the future.”

Safety concerns amid near-miss incidents

The airport has come under criticism in recent weeks amid safety concerns following three near-miss incidents involving aircraft in the space of two weeks. Sydney Airport Union Secretary Robert Car has said cost-cutting and the use of contractors have led to the airport becoming “not safe for the travelling public.”

Asked for comment on the issues, a Sydney Airport spokesperson said safety was and always would be “the first priority” and added: “Australia has one of the safest aviation systems in the world, supported by rigorous oversight from safety regulators, airlines, airports and air navigation service providers.”

While opposition politicians like senator Bridget McKenzie slammed the baggage charges as a “cash grab,” the good news for travellers who find it hard to travel light is that the 10kg locker limit actually represents a 43% increase in the carry-on weight limit, currently 7kg and due to be scrapped when the new rules come into effect.

In implementing this shift, Jetstar will become the first and only Australian or New Zealand airline so far to make passengers pay for using overhead cabin lockers. Other regional carriers have, however, already brought in auxiliary fees for options such as checked luggage, in-flight entertainment, menus, and seat selection.

Industry commentators expect the new Jetstar regime to cause some upset among antipodean customers. “It will ruffle feathers because Australian travelers have got such high expectations,” said Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com. “For such a long time they lived in a bubble of full-service options only.”

Petersen also questioned whether the extra cost would be a step too far for customers given that “Jetstar’s starting price is generally well above what Ryanair or Wizz Air can offer” due to the “level of competition and because wages, taxes and operating costs sit much higher here.”

But Jetstar has defended the change, saying it would usher in a smoother boarding process and cut chaos at gates as it would eliminate the practice of weighing bags at the gate.

“By giving customers an underseat bag with the option to add Priority Carry-on, we can make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time,” Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said in a statement, adding: “From February, the main thing customers will need to think about is the size of their carry-on.”

Graeme Hughes, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Griffith University, remarked on the impact of the per-person increase on larger families, and told Explore that the speed of price increases “stings.” He noted: “We only just saw the rate climb from $60 to $70 in July 2024, so we are looking at a 33 per cent jump in the cost of leaving the country in under three years.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia has issued a statement slamming the price hike as “yet another burden on travellers at a time when the tourism community is working hard to overcome challenges at home and overseas.”

Meanwhile, the move has “blindsided” the national Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF), which pointed out there had been no prior industry consultation and no transparency over the benefits a tax increase would bring. TTF CEO Margy Osmond told SBS News: “It is not good enough to just slap an additional tax on the travelling public and the tourism industry without improving the conditions that those travellers will be experiencing when they cross the border.”

However, Trade and Tourism Ministry spokesperson Don Farrell dismissed concerns over the impact on consumers. “Australia’s experience has been that relatively small increases to the PMC do not have a measurable effect on international visitation,” he said, adding: “Following the last $10 increase in the PMC, short-term international arrivals increased by 5 percent year-on-year, rising from 7.97 million to 8.40 million visitors.” Although no precise use for the money was given, Farrell also said the government “remains committed to ongoing modernisation of the border.”

The project was developed in partnership with the University of Sydney, specifically its Charles Perkins Centre. Studies showed that regular movement during long flights can help reduce jet lag and lower health risks such as deep vein thrombosis. The airline uses these findings to support the idea that moving during a flight is not just optional but important for health and wellbeing.

Beyond the Wellbeing Zone, the aircraft will also include updates across different cabin classes. First class will feature enclosed suites with separate seating and sleeping areas, as well as added storage and privacy elements. Business class will include seats with sliding doors and lie-flat beds measuring around two metres in length. In Premium Economy, new seats will offer a larger recline and more ergonomic support, while Economy passengers will also see small adjustments such as updated seat design and slightly more space compared to previous configurations.

The Wellbeing Zone will be installed on the new Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, which are designed specifically for ultra-long-haul travel. These planes will operate some of the longest commercial flights in the world, including routes between Sydney, London and New York. The aircraft has been specially configured with reduced passenger numbers to allow more space and comfort onboard. Testing of the aircraft is expected before entry into service in 2026, ahead of the planned 2027 launch. While eligibility criteria and conditions remain undecided, the proposal would make significant differences to how Australians experience longer-term stays in Europe, making cross-border travel and work much smoother and removing national-level entry barriers. Without a looming countdown of 90 days, digital nomads could benefit from the certainty of residency rights without having to make frequent reapplications, opening up the option of longer-term rentals. In addition, the proposed easing of sponsorship requirements could make relocation a more realistic opportunity for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and fully employed remote workers. The terms of the deal on the table are also said to include the right to work more generally.

The visa-free travel rights form part of a wider EU-Australia trade deal that has been awaiting finalisation since 2018. Talks have been stuck on disagreement over agricultural import and export rules, including quantities of Australian meat and European “place of origin” food and drink denominations that protect products like feta cheese and prosecco. An important aspect of the trade treaty for Europe is the access it would gain to Australian minerals, reducing reliance on those from China.

Having recently built momentum with a successful trade treaty with South America, the EU is hopeful that an Australia deal could be in the pipeline, and the reciprocal visa-free travel rights are being seen as an inducement to close negotiations.

Instead, it is bordered by the North George River—a “freezing” course of water where tin and sapphire prospectors wear wetsuits, according to Kristy Probert, owner of the localWeldborough Hotel. She has had to disappoint “droves” of visitors arriving in the town seeking the “untouched” geothermal springs “rich in therapeutic minerals,” that the post described, as reported by ABC News. The non-existent “secluded forest retreat” was such a “favourite” according to the fake AI information, that it had been ranked in a list of the “7 Best Hot Springs Tasmania Experiences for 2026.”

Weldborough is not easy to reach, so tourists making a special trip there for the hot springs only to find they were an AI hallucination became increasingly angry at their wasted journey. Australian Tours and Cruises, the firm that published the AI blog, confirmed to ABC, “our AI has messed up completely,” but insisted they are a “legit” company. In late January 2026, they described “the online hate and damage to our business reputation” as “soul-destroying.”

The AI hallucination the tour company put out has not only wasted people’s time and travel budget, but also, experts note, sowed potentially dangerous misinformation, encouraging visitors to enter low-temperature waters and to explore remote parts of Tasmania on foot, despite the region’s lack of mobile phone and data coverage.

Elsewhere, AI has featured non-existent hiking trails on hazardous routes, where the mapping is fatally inaccurate. Another reason for caution is that as AI travel planning tools proliferate, so do the ways in which scammers might try to use them for darker purposes. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse, with legitimate developers trying to find ways to stop swindlers in turn.

But Australian Tours and Cruises are far from alone in attempting to harness AI. Airlines like Delta now propose AI “butlers.” Trip.com has developed an AI genie, Kayak began supporting AI plugins in 2023, and other search giants like Booking.com, Expedia, and Google are constantly evolving ChatGPT-powered AI features in response to apparent demand. Gemini’s “Gems” is supposed to offer a personalised travel guide service, making trip planning more intuitive. Even Google warns that results are “for illustrative purposes and may vary,” adding: “Check responses for accuracy. Internet and a browser for setup. Available in select languages, and to users 18+.”

Whether scams or hallucinations or so-called “AI slop”, nearly all AI itineraries contain errors, Hardy highlights, saying “90% of itineraries that AI generates have mistakes in them.”

Yet, around four in 10 tourists now use AI for travel advice or itineraries, says Anne Hardy, adjunct professor in tourism at Southern Cross University, Australia, telling CNN people “trust AI more than review sites.” Hardy’s findings echo research by the UK travel industry association, ABTA, whose 2025 survey revealed the proportion of holidaymakers using artificial intelligence (AI) to plan their trips had doubled over the year.

Likewise, officials from Queensland Parks and Forests warned in December 2025 of “heightened dingo activity” on K’gari’s Eastern Beach, extending the alert until the end of January 2026. “Dingoes have been ripping tents, stealing food or property, damaging property, and approaching people,” the website says.

ABC News reported over 130 “threatening or high-risk incidents” between humans and wild dingoes reported on K’gari in the first half of 2023 alone. One involved a young woman jogger who was bitten and forced into the water. A year ago, a three-year-old boy was bitten.

Footage posted by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science on social media urges tourists to “take ‘dingo-safe’ measures after a number of attacks.” The video clip shows a dingo approach a group of beachgoers before biting a young woman on the bottom as she sunbathes.

Dingo-safe behaviours include keeping children within arm’s reach, carrying a stick to help keep the animals at a safe distance, and disposing properly of waste to avoid attracting the creatures to scraps of food. If a dingo is nearby, it is important to avoid running as it can “trigger their hunting instincts,” the parks officials said, adding that it is illegal to feed or interact with dingoes.

Canadian officials are providing consular assistance to the deceased Canadian’s relatives, and a Global Affairs Canada spokesperson has extended condolences to her family and loved ones.
