The Passenger Movement Charge is a flat fee bundled into air fares. It is levied on nearly all departing passengers over the age of 11, whether nationals or visitors in Australia. Only airline staff, foreign servicepeople, and unintentional arrivals in Australia are exempt.

The cost currently stands at AUD $70 (around €43) but will go up by AUD $10 to hit AUD $80 in January 2026. The over 14% increase comes amid concerns over fuel costs in the aviation sector, which many fear will be passed onto customers, adding to a chilling effect on the international travel market.

Graeme Hughes, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Griffith University, remarked on the impact of the per-person increase on larger families, and told Explore that the speed of price increases “stings.” He noted: “We only just saw the rate climb from $60 to $70 in July 2024, so we are looking at a 33 per cent jump in the cost of leaving the country in under three years.”

Australia’s tourism sector has not welcomed the move, noting that, though budget papers predict an injection of AUD $755 million over the next five years thanks to the tax, the federal government has not yet revealed how those additional funds will be used. Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia has issued a statement slamming the price hike as “yet another burden on travellers at a time when the tourism community is working hard to overcome challenges at home and overseas.”

Meanwhile, the move has “blindsided” the national Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF), which pointed out there had been no prior industry consultation and no transparency over the benefits a tax increase would bring. TTF CEO Margy Osmond told SBS News: “It is not good enough to just slap an additional tax on the travelling public and the tourism industry without improving the conditions that those travellers will be experiencing when they cross the border.”

However, Trade and Tourism Ministry spokesperson Don Farrell dismissed concerns over the impact on consumers. “Australia’s experience has been that relatively small increases to the PMC do not have a measurable effect on international visitation,” he said, adding: “Following the last $10 increase in the PMC, short-term international arrivals increased by 5 percent year-on-year, rising from 7.97 million to 8.40 million visitors.” Although no precise use for the money was given, Farrell also said the government “remains committed to ongoing modernisation of the border.”

The Wellbeing Zone will be located between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins on the aircraft. It is designed as a “third space” in the cabin, meaning it is separate from standard seating areas and meant for active use rather than sitting. Soft lighting and acoustic design materials are used to make the area feel different from the rest of the cabin and more relaxing. 

Inside the zone, passengers will find features designed to support movement and light exercise during the flight. There will be sculpted handrails that help passengers stretch safely while in the air. Large screens will display guided movement programmes led by digital instructors, making it easy for passengers to follow simple exercises. A self-service refreshment area will also be available, offering snacks and hydration drinks to help passengers stay comfortable and energised.

The design of the Wellbeing Zone is based on research into how the human body responds to long periods of sitting. The project was developed in partnership with the University of Sydney, specifically its Charles Perkins Centre. Studies showed that regular movement during long flights can help reduce jet lag and lower health risks such as deep vein thrombosis. The airline uses these findings to support the idea that moving during a flight is not just optional but important for health and wellbeing.

Beyond the Wellbeing Zone, the aircraft will also include updates across different cabin classes. First class will feature enclosed suites with separate seating and sleeping areas, as well as added storage and privacy elements. Business class will include seats with sliding doors and lie-flat beds measuring around two metres in length. In Premium Economy, new seats will offer a larger recline and more ergonomic support, while Economy passengers will also see small adjustments such as updated seat design and slightly more space compared to previous configurations.

These planes will operate some of the longest commercial flights in the world, including routes between Sydney, London and New York. The aircraft has been specially configured with reduced passenger numbers to allow more space and comfort onboard. While eligibility criteria and conditions remain undecided, the proposal would make significant differences to how Australians experience longer-term stays in Europe, making cross-border travel and work much smoother and removing national-level entry barriers. Without a looming countdown of 90 days, digital nomads could benefit from the certainty of residency rights without having to make frequent reapplications, opening up the option of longer-term rentals. In addition, the proposed easing of sponsorship requirements could make relocation a more realistic opportunity for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and fully employed remote workers. The terms of the deal on the table are also said to include the right to work more generally.

The visa-free travel rights form part of a wider EU-Australia trade deal that has been awaiting finalisation since 2018. Talks have been stuck on disagreement over agricultural import and export rules, including quantities of Australian meat and European “place of origin” food and drink denominations that protect products like feta cheese and prosecco. An important aspect of the trade treaty for Europe is the access it would gain to Australian minerals, reducing reliance on those from China.

The blog has since been taken down because Weldborough, in northeastern Tasmania, has no hot springs. Instead, it is bordered by the North George River—a “freezing” course of water where tin and sapphire prospectors wear wetsuits, according to Kristy Probert, owner of the localWeldborough Hotel. She has had to disappoint “droves” of visitors arriving in the town seeking the “untouched” geothermal springs “rich in therapeutic minerals,” that the post described, as reported by ABC News. The non-existent “secluded forest retreat” was such a “favourite” according to the fake AI information, that it had been ranked in a list of the “7 Best Hot Springs Tasmania Experiences for 2026.”

Weldborough is not easy to reach, so tourists making a special trip there for the hot springs only to find they were an AI hallucination became increasingly angry at their wasted journey. Australian Tours and Cruises, the firm that published the AI blog, confirmed to ABC, “our AI has messed up completely,” but insisted they are a “legit” company. In late January 2026, they described “the online hate and damage to our business reputation” as “soul-destroying.”

The AI hallucination the tour company put out has not only wasted people’s time and travel budget, but also, experts note, sowed potentially dangerous misinformation, encouraging visitors to enter low-temperature waters and to explore remote parts of Tasmania on foot, despite the region’s lack of mobile phone and data coverage.

Elsewhere, AI has featured non-existent hiking trails on hazardous routes, where the mapping is fatally inaccurate. Another reason for caution is that as AI travel planning tools proliferate, so do the ways in which scammers might try to use them for darker purposes. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse, with legitimate developers trying to find ways to stop swindlers in turn.

But Australian Tours and Cruises are far from alone in attempting to harness AI. Airlines like Delta now propose AI “butlers.” Trip.com has developed an AI genie, Kayak began supporting AI plugins in 2023, and other search giants like Booking.com, Expedia, and Google are constantly evolving ChatGPT-powered AI features in response to apparent demand. Gemini’s “Gems” is supposed to offer a personalised travel guide service, making trip planning more intuitive. Even Google warns that results are “for illustrative purposes and may vary,” adding: “Check responses for accuracy. Internet and a browser for setup. Available in select languages, and to users 18+.”

Whether scams or hallucinations or so-called “AI slop”, nearly all AI itineraries contain errors, Hardy highlights, saying “90% of itineraries that AI generates have mistakes in them.”

Yet, around four in 10 tourists now use AI for travel advice or itineraries, says Anne Hardy, adjunct professor in tourism at Southern Cross University, Australia, telling CNN people “trust AI more than review sites.” Hardy’s findings echo research by the UK travel industry association, ABTA, whose 2025 survey revealed the proportion of holidaymakers using artificial intelligence (AI) to plan their trips had doubled over the year.

Likewise, officials from Queensland Parks and Forests warned in December 2025 of “heightened dingo activity” on K’gari’s Eastern Beach, extending the alert until the end of January 2026. “Dingoes have been ripping tents, stealing food or property, damaging property, and approaching people,” the website says.

ABC News reported over 130 “threatening or high-risk incidents” between humans and wild dingoes reported on K’gari in the first half of 2023 alone. One involved a young woman jogger who was bitten and forced into the water. A year ago, a three-year-old boy was bitten.

Footage posted by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science on social media urges tourists to “take ‘dingo-safe’ measures after a number of attacks.” The video clip shows a dingo approach a group of beachgoers before biting a young woman on the bottom as she sunbathes.

Dingo-safe behaviours include keeping children within arm’s reach, carrying a stick to help keep the animals at a safe distance, and disposing properly of waste to avoid attracting the creatures to scraps of food. If a dingo is nearby, it is important to avoid running as it can “trigger their hunting instincts,” the parks officials said, adding that it is illegal to feed or interact with dingoes.

Canadian officials are providing consular assistance to the deceased Canadian’s relatives, and a Global Affairs Canada spokesperson has extended condolences to her family and loved ones.

Four people have been attacked by sharks along the coastline in less than two days. A surfer at Point Plomer was “very fortunate” to escape with minimal injuries, according to Steve Pearce, the chief executive of Surf Life Saving NSW. Another surfer narrowly avoided severe injury at Dee Why Beach in Sydney. A 27-year-old man attacked near Manly suffered “life-changing” injuries, and a 12-year-old boy was left in a critical condition after a shark bite on a Sydney Harbour beach.

Bull sharks are believed to be behind the attacks, which have occurred during the summer season, when water temperatures that the species prefers, and in the wake of heavy rains, which make the waters more nutrient-rich than usual, attracting fish that the sharks feed on. While shark attacks are rare, bull sharks possess the ability to live in both saltwater and freshwater, meaning they pose a greater threat to humans since they share coastal and river habitats with us. They can reach over three metres in length and up to 230 kg in weight – a high width to length ratio that makes them powerful. What’s more, they have dark colouration on top and are lighter on the underbelly, which helps camouflage them in disturbed waters.

“We really strongly advocate that nobody swim or surf near river mouths because it’s obviously an area where sharks congregate,” Pearce told ABC. “If it’s dirty water, I’d think twice about going in there.”

Although officials have closed around 40 beaches, the situation remains a worry. The school summer holiday period in Australia is fast approaching, as is the Australia Day public holiday, which will give workers a long weekend, over which NSW temperatures are forecast to soar to 34 °C.

What we know so far

The shooting took place on Sunday evening at around 6:47 pm local time at Archer Park, Bondi Beach, during a public event marking the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. More than 1,000 people were gathered at the time, many of them families.

According to New South Wales police, at least 16 people were killed, including a 10 year old girl. The victims range in age from 10 to 87. Around 40 others remain in hospital, including three children. Five people are in a critical condition, with others listed as serious or stable.

Police said their figures include the two suspected attackers. One gunman was shot and killed at the scene, while the second suspect is in custody in a critical condition.

Only one victim has so far been formally identified. The family of British born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, an assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi, have paid tribute to him. Israel’s foreign ministry has also confirmed that an Israeli citizen was among those killed.

How the attack unfolded

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said two individuals opened fire on a “crowded group of families” in what he described as a “cowardly act of terrifying violence”. Video footage circulating online appears to show two gunmen firing from a small bridge overlooking the beach, as crowds ran for safety across the sand.

In another video, a bystander can be seen tackling one of the attackers and wresting a rifle away. The man, later identified by media as Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, was shot twice during the incident. He is seen pointing the weapon at the attacker, who then fled towards his accomplice.

Emergency services responded rapidly, securing the area and establishing an exclusion zone while specialist officers examined a number of suspicious items found nearby. A police bomb disposal unit was also deployed to investigate a suspected improvised explosive device discovered in one of the suspects’ vehicles.

Who are the suspects?

Police have identified one suspected gunman as 24 year old Naveed Akram, who was critically injured during the attack and remains in custody. His driver’s licence lists his address as Bonnyrigg, a suburb in western Sydney. Police have since raided a property linked to him in that area.

The second suspected attacker, who died at the scene, is Sajid Akram (about 50 years old) father of Naveed.

Official response and international reaction

Australian leaders have strongly condemned the attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described it as a “devastating” act of terrorism that struck at the heart of the nation, while Premier Chris Minns called it a “horrifying evil attack”.

International reactions have been swift. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was “shocked” by the shooting. “Europe stands with Australia and Jewish communities everywhere. We are united against violence, antisemitism and hatred,” she wrote on X. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas added that “this appalling act of violence against the Jewish community must be unequivocally condemned”.

King Charles said he and Queen Camilla were “appalled and saddened”, while UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the shooting as “sickening”. US President Donald Trump called the attack “terrible” and “antisemitic”, and praised the bravery of the bystander who confronted one of the gunmen.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the killings as “cold blooded murder” and linked the attack to what he said was a rise in antisemitism in Australia. His comments come amid broader international debate about antisemitism, free speech and criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Australian authorities have reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and have urged against speculation while motives are formally established.

What does this mean for travellers?

For visitors, Australian authorities are clear that there is no broader threat to tourists or the general public. Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most famous landmarks, was reopened after police operations concluded, and the city’s transport, hotels and attractions continue to operate normally.

Australia remains widely regarded as a safe destination, with low levels of violent crime and strong policing. High profile attacks of this nature are extremely rare, which is why the Bondi Beach tragedy has resonated so deeply across the country.

Companies that fail to demonstrate adequate efforts to block underage access face penalties of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, explained that the decision stemmed from the notion that we should behave online as we do ‘offline. Would we let young people into strip clubs or bars, or allow them to buy alcohol or cigarettes? What norms do we want online?’

Platforms such as Roblox, Pinterest, YouTube Kids, Discord, WhatsApp, GitHub, LEGO Play, Steam, Google Classroom, Messenger and LinkedIn are not subject to the ban as they are deemed to pose a lower risk. How will platforms verify age?

Students have raised concerns about losing access to photos and messages, and about whether lying about their age would help.

Verification will be left to the platforms, who will use IDs, behavioural signals or a combination of methods. Meta declined to specify its approach, arguing that disclosure might help teenagers to evade detection.

Instagram and Facebook are offering teenagers the option to ‘freeze’ their accounts until they turn 16. TikTok and Snapchat have similar solutions. Around 440,000 Australian Snapchat accounts are expected to be affected. 

However, mistakes are inevitable, and users over 16 will be able to appeal decisions by providing ID and submitting a video selfie or any other measure decided by the platform.

Children, parents and political pushback

The ban has already sparked debate in the political arena, with some children and teenagers, including young influencers with “business accounts”, opposed to the measure. Others have embraced the change. Fourteen-year-old Maxine told CNN that she and her friends stopped using their phones a year ago in anticipation of the measure, saying, “Everyone’s forgotten about social media. It’s the most vivid and animated environment I’ve ever been in”.

A legal challenge from libertarian John Ruddick, who argued that the ban breached freedom of political communication, was rejected. 

The government has taken a pragmatic stance, noting that “some platforms will do this more quickly and effectively than others… We’ll be watching closely and taking an outcomes-based approach.” 

Children will not be penalised for trying to bypass the ban, but experts acknowledge that circumvention will occur through VPNs, parents’ accounts or even face-altering filters.

A global test case

The measure is being watched closely abroad at a time when evidence of the health impacts of early smartphone use is increasing. A recent US study shows that over 60% of children aged 11–12 now own a smartphone, up from around 45% a few years ago. Potential risks include depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep.

The European Union has just adopted a non-legislative report urging stronger protection for minors online and stricter safeguards against addictive and manipulative design.

In an interview with AnewZ, Antonio Buscardini, president of the Press Club Brussels Europe, says he sees the Australian ban as directly relevant to European concerns. He highlights “a rare consensus” in the European Parliament vote, describing it as “a political sign that parents, schools, and society are calling for regulation”. He believes that the issue is “not about banning, but about regulating access, maintaining parental controls and setting clear limits”. He argues that such regulation will require real cooperation between parents and schools.

As Australia becomes the first country to implement a full ban on social media for under-16s, the world will be watching to see how families, social media platforms and schools adapt, and what lessons others might draw from it.

As of 1 December 2025, Virgin Australia travellers will have to keep battery-powered items close onboard. Henceforward, power banks, batteries, and portable electronic devices must be stored close to the traveller’s seat. Moreover, a maximum of two devices is allowed per person, and they should not exceed 160Wh overall, with prior approval needed for power banks generating between 100Wh and 160Wh. Aside from the fact that battery-powered devices will have to be kept close by passengers, using or charging power banks while onboard will be entirely banned.

“Globally, more lithium battery-powered devices are now being carried by travellers, and while these items are generally safe when packed and handled appropriately, this move will minimise any potential risks associated with these devices”, Virgin’s COO, Chris Snook, told The Sydney Morning Herald.

As of 15 December 2025, Qantas and Jetstar will be taking similar measures. Qantas specifies that all power banks should display battery specifications and says that their change in policy is inspired by planned updates from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), expected to go into effect in 2026.

“Keeping power banks and portable electronic devices within easy reach during a flight ensures that in the rare event of an issue, our crew can identify and respond quickly”, Qantas said in a statement.

Growing number of incidents caused by power banks

The news of the Australian carriers comes weeks after the power bank of a 50-year-old passenger waiting at the Qantas business lounge at Melbourne airport exploded, leaving him with burn injuries and causing the lounge to be evacuated. In July 2025, a power bank already caused a fire on a Virgin flight heading from Sydney to Hobart.

Over the past year, many airlines and aviation authorities have decided to change their power bank policy following several mid-flight incidents. At the start of 2025, South Korean airline Air Busan decided to ban power banks from luggage stored in the overhead compartments, and as of 1 October, Emirates prohibits the use of power banks onboard. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also issued a Safety Alert for Operations warning about the dangers of lithium batteries carried on board aircraft by passengers and crew.

A total of 170 onshore excursions are planned, complemented by special culinary events as part of Silversea’s S.A.L.T. (Sea & Land Taste) programme.

A culinary journey of the region

The S.A.L.T. experience will feature renowned local chefs in Adelaide and Hobart, as well as masterclasses using regional ingredients.

In Adelaide, guests will join chef Tom Tilbury for a guided tour of the Botanic Gardens, learning about sustainable and seasonal ingredients, before enjoying a four-course luncheon with South Australian wine pairings at the Botanic Lodge. In Hobart, the celebrated chef Analiese Gregory will host a ‘Wild Tastes’ masterclass at Bowmont on the banks of the Huon River, after a scenic drive through Tasmania’s countryside. The two chefs and Balinese culinary expert Tjok Maya Kerthyasa will also join the Silver Nova to host S.A.L.T. events on board, offering guests a rare opportunity to interact with some of the region’s most innovative culinary experts.

Itinerary highlights, from reefs to rainforest

After a Bon Voyage luncheon at Albert Park Lake, the vessel departed. The first stop was Eden, followed by an overnight stay in Sydney to enjoy its unparalleled harbour views. Further stops include Newcastle’s coastal culture and Brisbane’s vibrant waterfront. Further north, guests will explore Mooloolaba, Fraser Island (K’gari), Shute Harbour (Whitsunday Islands) and Townsville. Guests will enjoy another overnight stay in Cairns, followed by visits to Port Douglas and Cooktown, before arriving in Darwin for a third overnight stay.

In Port Douglas, guests will be treated to an unforgettable evening at Flames of the Forest on 30 October. Nestled I the heart of the Wet Tropic of North Queensland, this unique dining experience offers guests the chance to enjoy exquisite cuisine in a dreamlike rainforest setting, where they will dine by candlelight surrounded by nature.

Excursions range from flightseeing over the UNESCO-listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, to snorkelling with a Master Reef Guide and cruising through the Whitsundays by small boat.

After spending a night in Darwin, where guests will have the chance to explore Australia’s tropical wilderness, the ship will head north to Benoa in Bali, Indonesia, where passengers can experience the country’s heritage.

Travellers will visit Fremantle (Perth), Busselton, Albany, Esperance and Port Lincoln along the West and South Coast, before continuing on to Adelaide for another overnight stay, as well as visiting Kangaroo Island and Robe. Excursions include an insight into Australia’s pearl culture at the Broken Bay Pearl Farm in New South Wales, as well as the S.A.L.T. programme.

The cruise is scheduled to end in Melbourne on 30 November 2025.
