Antarctica, the world’s southernmost continent and considered by many to be one of the last true wildernesses, is increasingly polluted by tourism and research activity, according to two new studies – and parts of its ice sheets could be at risk of collapse, resulting in devastation in coastal communities around the world.

One of the papers, published in Nature Sustainability on 20 August 2025, looked at heavy metal imprints in the region and detected notable quantities of them in the snow chemistry of the northern Antarctic Peninsula, where major research stations are situated and where marine tourism traffic is most intense.

“The increasing human presence in Antarctica raises concerns about pollutants from fossil fuel combustion, including those from ships, aircraft, vehicles and supporting infrastructure,” the study said.

Over 122,000 visitors went to Antarctica in 2024. In figures that may be hard to swallow for many of them, not to mention operators with claims to sustainable practices, such as Penguin Watch or Quark Expeditions, who welcome researchers and conservationists on board helping them reach some of the most remote areas of the Arctic and Antarctic, just one single tourist “can contribute to accelerating the melting of around 100 tons of snow,” according to Chilean and Dutch researchers.

Longer-term research missions can cause tenfold that damage per person, and that’s in addition to the carbon emissions generated by the average visitor: 5.44 tonnes of CO2 emissions per passenger, all going into the global warming pot.

Despite efforts to limit the “burdens of human activities”, such as a ban on heavy fuel oil and the adoption of electric-hybrid tourist ships, “more remains to be done”, the international team said. Worse, some measures have been counterproductive, such as a rule capping cruise passenger disembarkations at 100 at a time, meaning larger boats circle back for repeat landings.

In the other study, published simultaneously in Nature, Australian researchers argue that changes in Antarctica are “interlinked”. As sea ice is lost from the ocean surface, the amount of solar heat being retained in the climate system is increasing, creating an “unstoppable” chain reaction, lead author Dr Nerilie Abram, Chief Scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), explains.

That warming due to CO2 emissions is putting the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) in danger of collapse – an event that would raise sea levels by more than three metres, endangering coasts and causing “catastrophic consequences for generations to come.”

For the first time in history, a cruise ship is set to circumnavigate the whole of Antarctica. Ponant Explorations’ luxury icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot will make the journey at the start of 2028, led by captains Etienne Garcia and Patrick Marchesseau. Sales are scheduled to open at the end of 2025.

Between January 2028 and March 2028, the Le Commandant Charcot vessel will explore the nearly 18,000 kilometres of Antarctic coastline. Some of the regions it passes through are still largely uncharted and the ship and its passengers will thus tread in the footsteps of historical explorers.

“After sailing the Ross Sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot, I had the privilege of following in the footsteps of explorers Ross, Shackleton and Amundsen, who made history at the South Pole. I was captivated by the majesty of these polar landscapes as well as the incredible human adventures etched into them. Today, we want to allow guests to experience the thrill of exploration during the first circumnavigation of Antarctica. A land where humans have never set foot, a frozen world yet to be discovered,” Captain Garcia added.

Le Commandant Charcot, sailing under the French flag, will start its journey in Ushuaia (Argentina) and will reach Hobart (Tasmania) 30 days later. After a two-day stopover, the vessel will travel back to Ushuaia via a 34-day route following Antarctica’s eastern shoreline. Travellers will get the chance to explore the continent by Zodiac, on snowshoe hikes, and by kayak. A polar plunge will also be a possibility for the bravest explorers.

“Ponant Explorations’ spirit is about those moments of shared awe as we witness the immense forces of nature at play. As one of the originators of this project and personally involved, I am deeply committed to guiding guests in uncovering the secrets of this new maritime route. It is a privilege to help them experience how we humbly engage with the elements — the wind, the sea, the ice — bringing us as close as possible to the marvels of the natural world,” said Captain Étienne Garcia.

A surge in adventure tourism and cruises to the Antarctic, with over 122,000 visitors to the polar region in 2024, is raising questions about sustainability among environmental experts, with some calling for a ban on Antarctic travel to help safeguard its fragile ecosystem.

Pollution, disease, snow melt, and global warming

One of the main problems is that there are no environmentally-friendly ways for masses of visitors to reach the Antarctic. The vast majority arrive by cruise ship, and even though the ships that serve Antarctic routes are usually smaller vessels than elsewhere around the world, every single arrival brings inherent risks. Ironically a rule stating that no more than 100 cruise passengers are allowed to land at any one time means larger boats circle back for more than one landing, increasing pollution and footfall.

Besides threatening the isolated ecosystem of the continent, through the risk of bringing in non-native seeds, species on clothes and boots, and even viruses such as avian flu, humans also bring other existential hazards to Antarctica.

The black carbon brought to Antarctica by human traffic such as helicopters, planes, ships, and lorries, as well as diesel generators, is turning the snow and ice in the polar region dark, meaning it melts faster. University of Santiago de Chile researchers have estimated that every single visitor to the region wipes out 83 tonnes of snow each. That’s in addition to the carbon emissions generated by the average visitor: 5.44 tonnes of CO2 emissions per passenger all going into the global warming pot.

With global surface temperatures at record levels for a number of years now, scientists have already said the first snow free day in the Arctic could occur by as soon as 2027 and noted an alarming decline in sea ice in the Antarctic. The resulting change in Earth’s weather patterns, sea levels and climate could be catastrophic.

Last chance?

It is easy to see then how some types of travel to the Antarctic, such as for weddings, could be argued to be self-indulgent. However, others suggest that calls for a ban on Antarctic tourism are not only counterproductive, driving even more people there under a “last chance to go” mantra, but also potentially damaging to partnerships that have been built up over time between researchers and some tourism operators.

Quark Expeditions, for example, run small trips and “actively collaborate with researchers and conservationists by welcoming them onboard our vessels and facilitating their access to some of the most remote areas of the Arctic and Antarctic,” the company’s head of sustainability Lyndsey Lewis claims. In another example, partnerships with Penguin Watch, allow scientists to “conduct vital fieldwork and gather invaluable data that advance our collective understanding of these fragile ecosystems.”

Travellers seeking to minimise the negative effects of their polar adventures could prioritise companies like Quark, or even find other ways to lessen their footprint, such as travelling by sail boat rather than diesel, or boarding cargo ships rather than planes, to reach departure points, but the bottom line is, for now, clear. Adventure travel to the poles is contributing to the disappearance of the very landscape visitors want to see.

Luxury expedition cruise line, Silversea Cruises, has broken ground on a new hotel in the Antarctic, in a bid to offer its cruise guests what a press release calls “frictionless travel to the White Continent.”

The new facility’s site is in Puerto Williams, a Chilean port city that is the southernmost inhabited settlement in the world. Set in a “pristine forest” and overlooking the Beagle Channel, the 150-room hotel will offer waterfront and Patagonian mountain views, as well as a restaurant, bar, lounge, fitness centre, and local artisan gift shop.

Economic growth, minimal environmental impact?

Press materials promise that by completion in 2025 the hotel will “blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment drawing inspiration from local traditional art, architecture, and materials”. They also highlight the cruise line’s commitment to “fostering long-term partnerships with the communities of Puerto Williams” and its “work with stakeholders to create opportunities for economic growth while preserving the unique cultural heritage and minimizing environmental impact”.

Important to the local economy, Silversea is the only cruise line that uses Puerto Williams during the Antarctica season as its home port. Its position in the sub-Antarctic zone of Patagonia at the southern tip of South America provides a route for Silversea Cruise guests to explore the world’s least visited continent, discovering uninhabited Antarctic islands, snow-covered mountains, icescapes and a vast array of diverse wildlife.

New fly-cruise option

Effectively the hotel gives another option for cruise guests embarking on Silversea’s so-called “Antarctica Bridge” fly-cruise, which offers time-pressed passengers the chance to fly directly to Puerto Williams from the Chilean capital Santiago. From there, three Silversea liners serve a selection of 6 to 20-day Antarctic voyages.

Attending the groundbreaking event were a number of executives from Silversea, parent group Royal Caribbean, as well as regional, provincial and municipal Chilean representatives. “As we continue to push the boundaries on the ultimate vacation experience for our guests, this new hotel allows us to offer an unmatched Antarctic expedition,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group.

“Breathtaking and remote”

“Partnering with our experienced teams in Chile, we are providing guests with a unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s most breathtaking and remote destinations that advances our promise to deliver a lifetime of vacations,” Liberty added.

Building on that theme and claiming that “Silversea continues to set the standard in experiential luxury travel,” Bert Hernandez, Silversea’s president said the hotel would facilitate “seamless journeys that remove traditional barriers for guests to this region.”

According to research just published in Nature, only small localized pockets of ice shelves were thinning in Antarctica between 1973 and 1989, located primarily in the Amundsen Sea Embayment and the Wilkes Land coastline. Ice-shelf thinning accelerated and spread rapidly into the 1990s and 2000s; if the trend continues, we can confidently expect a continuing acceleration of the contribution of Antarctica to sea-level rise, threatening coastal communities around the world.

Greenhouse gas emissions and climate change are resulting in very significant reductions in ice in Antarctica, making East Antarctica a ‘sleeping giant’ of sea level rise. Tourism is not the only cause of climate change, but the sector is thought to contribute between 5% and 8% of greenhouse gases.

Antarctica is the Earth’s only continent without an indigenous population and is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). A number of conventions and protocols. The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty entered into force in January 1998, It has five specific annexes covering marine pollution, fauna and flora, environmental impact assessments, waste management, and protected areas.

Travel to Antarctica is mainly across the Drake Passage by ship, but in 2021 an Airbus A340 landed on the Antarctic for the first time. “Each flight took between five and five and a half hours, and the team spent less than three hours on the ground in Antarctica, covering 2,500 nautical miles.” White Desert offers accommodation. An adventure of a life time “… we continue to the South Pole, landing at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. At the designated marker, you will be at the lowest point on earth. A place with no more East, South or West – only North and you will be able to walk around the world in just a few paces! (…) Guests can choose to stay at either Whichaway, an oasis of luxury overlooking freshwater lakes, or Echo, where the lunar-landscape feels like being on another planet.” The adventure costs between $68,500 and $105,000 per passenger.

A number of operators offer snorkelling, scuba diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, camping, snowshoeing, mountaineering and cross-country skiing. All of which activities have environmental impacts. Antarctica is fast becoming an expensive mainstream destination. The UK company Scenic offers submersible and helicopter experiences as well as the wildlife.

As usual, the regulators lag behind, and, as everywhere else, enforcement is an issue. In 2010, the International Maritime Organisation banned cruise ships from burning heavy fuel oil in Antarctic waters. That can be enforced at the departure ports and it has capped the size of ships going to Antarctica and ships with over 500 passengers cannot land them.

Some citizen science does take place from the cruise ships. Richard Garriott, president of The Explorer’s Club, is quoted by Megan Spurrell in Conde Nast Traveller “Tourism is a risk that needs to be managed well, but it absolutely can be done in a way that is non threatening and non harmful. We just have to make sure people choose to do that. (…) The tourists who ride on these expeditions are, in many ways, subsidising that research,” said Garriott. “This public-private partnership, in the modern era, is almost the only way to get science done.”

Maggie Amsler, a biology researcher based at Palmer Station on Anvers Island is quoted in the same article: “Garbage, like plastic water bottles, are increasingly washing up on outer island shores. Smaller, private charters aboard yachts are on the increase, and there seems to be little oversight of their activities. There have been incidents over recent years wherein vessel passengers have been put ashore to explore on islands that are protected or the area has sensitive habitats or wildlife. If the vessel’s crew is not familiar with the local restrictions, what other regulatory aspects of Antarctic cruising are being overlooked?”

This all sounds very familiar. Spurrel concludes her article, published in May last year, with a quote from Amsler “Antarctica can be protected by everyone by developing sustainable, earth-friendly practices at home.” This is a classic defence, but it fails to address the direct negative impacts of rapidly growing tourism in Antarctica, where overtourism is becoming an issue.

The maps below are reproduced from VesselFinder on 28 February 2024. Green are passenger ships, purple yachts, red military and blue fishing vessels. There is very little traffic from Australia and New Zealand.

In the UK Parliament the Environmental Audit Sub-Committee on Polar Research has launched an inquiry into The UK and the Antarctic Environment. On 26 February, it turned its attention to “New Zealand science, environmental concerns about tourism on the continent and the making of Frozen Planet II.” The second panel “focused on tourism in Antarctica, and in particular the tension between allowing education for visitors and the potential for tourism demand to contribute to climate change in the region.”

It will be interesting to see the result of the Audit Sub-Committee’s deliberations on the relative value in raising awareness of the importance and vulnerability of Antarctica, of tourists’ experiences of the few and the impact of a wildlife and environment documentary available to so many more.

In the 1950s, only a few hundred tourists visited Antarctica each year, rising to 38,478 visitors in 2015-2016. IAATO, a membership organization, was founded in 1991 to advocate and promote the practice of safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic. It has 50+ operators in membership, but membership is voluntary. All IAATO’s members are committed to its “mission of advocating and promoting the practice of safe, environmentally responsible private sector travel to the Antarctic.” IAATO encounters non-member operators each season and it essentially self-regulates in the context of the Antarctic Treaty. It does not have any regulatory powers and there is no resident regulatory authority on Antarctica. Enforcement of the Antarctic Treaty is the responsibility of the signatories to the treaty.

For the 2022-3 season, IAATO reported 32,730 cruise-only visitors , 71,346 landed visitors and 821 deep field visitors. The “Deep Field Visitors” are a particular cause for concern. It is widely expected that over 100,000 tourists will visit Antarctica this season.

The British Antarctic Survey reports that the majority of tourists land on the peninsula arriving from Argentina and Chile, some itineraries include South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. A small number of tourist expedition ships visit the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea region and East Antarctica. A few fly in, and a few visit inland sites, including Mt Vinson (Antarctica’s highest mountain) and the geographic South Pole.

All tourists are expected to comply with the Antarctic Treaty, Environmental Protocol and adhere to the Guidance for Visitors to the Antarctic. Enforcement is through the tour operators and guides. IAATO Members also operate with codes of conduct that limit approach distances and behaviour in the vicinity of wildlife aggregations. In addition, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties have adopted a series of Site Guidelines for Visitors for the most visited sites in Antarctica.

1. Protect Antarctic wildlife

Do not disturb wildlife either at sea or on land

Do not feed or touch animals or photograph in a way that will disturb

Do not damage plants

Keep noise to the minimum

Do not bring non-native species to Antarctica

2. Respect protected areas

Be aware of the locations of protected areas

Respect the restrictions that apply to these sites

Do not damage, destroy or remove artefacts from Historic sites or monuments

3. Respect scientific research

Obtain permission before visiting Antarctic science stations

Do not interfere in any way with scientific equipment, study sites or field camps

4. Be safe

Know your capabilities and act with safety in mind

Keep a safe distance from all wildlife

Do not stray from the group

Do not walk onto glaciers or large snowfields unless properly trained

5. Keep Antarctica pristine

Do not litter

Do not deface or graffiti rocks and buildings

Do not remove artefacts as souvenirs. This includes: rocks, bones, fossils and contents of buildings

Unsurprisingly this advice is very similar to that which is found at many national parks.

Overtourism

Tourism impact is concentrated, and as more ships arrive, the intensity of visiting at the accessible sites on the peninsular increases. As the number of visits and visitors increases, the impacts will increase with environmental and wildlife impacts. If you have paid all that money to get there, who doesn’t want their trophy up close photo with the wildlife? There is no entrance fee or limit on numbers visiting Antarctica and no park management.

Paul Ward, webmaster at CoolAntarctica reports that sewage and food waste are allowed to be disposed of at sea in Antarctica by ships and bases on land. He lists the potential negative impacts as invasive species, breeding disturbance, spreading of diseases, erosion and disturbance of fragile environment and oil spills. The M/V Explorer sank in 2007 although there was no loss of human life. Paul lists the positive impacts as tourists becoming ambassadors for Antarctica and argues:

“As travel to Antarctica is expensive, tourists tend to be more affluent and consequently more educated and influential than the average tourist profile. They are more likely to be receptive to the message of conservation, a message which is reinforced by the educational atmosphere on board the ships where the majority of tourism in Antarctica is based.”

Given the witnesses called to the Audit Sub-Committee, which includes the producers of Frozen Planet II, it is likely that they will come to a view about the educational and awareness of value of tourism versus film. Frozen Planet I was screened in 2011 and is available online.

Antarctica not infinite, there is a maximum number of visitors which can be absorbed without more significant damaging impacts. The weather precludes extending the season and increasing dispersal across Antarctica will only spread the impacts further. Governing tourism in Antarctica is challenging and becoming urgent.

The largest plane ever to attempt a mission to Antarctica, the planet’s coldest, driest and windiest continent, has made a successful landing, delivering essential supplies to scientists on the frozen continent.

Everglades on ice

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, known as “Everglades” was a long way from the tropical wilderness it is named for. It landed in Antarctica on Wednesday, 15 November, 2023 at 2:01 am local time, on Troll Airfield’s 3,300 metre by 100 metre blue ice runway. Blue ice is formed on top of glaciers, from snow becoming compacted and merging with the glacier over time.

A historic moment for NorseThe first ever @BoeingAirplanes B787 Dreamliner to land in Antarctica! We are incredibly honoured to be a part of this piece of history, marking a very special milestone for Norse. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Norwegian Polar… pic.twitter.com/i2V1ZQZFAe
— Norse Atlantic Airways (@flynorse) November 16, 2023

Footage of the landing, which took place in bright sunlight thanks to the midnight sun at the height of summer at the south pole, is impressive. The colossal white and blue liveried aircraft touches down in perfect conditions on the groomed glacier, chased by a white plume.

The event appears remarkably graceful for an already heavy craft, carrying 12 tons of “essential research equipment and supplies”. The ultimate destination for those, and for most of the 45 passengers on board, would be the Norwegian Polar Institute, situated just under 7km from the air strip.

Environmental gain

The most crucial aspect is the environmental gain we can achieve by using large and modern aircraft of this type for Troll.
Camilla Brekke, Norwegian Polar Institute Director

“Landing such a large aircraft opens up entirely new possibilities for logistics at Troll, which will also contribute to strengthening Norwegian research in Antarctica,” said Camilla Brekke, the Institute’s director, in a statement.

While it may seem counter-intuitive to take such an enormous craft into such a fragile environment, the bigger the plane, the more it can carry and deliver to Antarctica in one trip, meaning fewer missions are necessary and fewer emissions overall, reducing “the environmental footprint in Antarctica,” Brekke added. What’s more, Dreamliners emit 25% less CO2 and are 50% quieter than the previous generation of aircraft.

“Spirit of exploration”

Norse Atlantic operated the flight, which was hailed by the carrier’s Chief Executive, Bjørn Tore Larsen, as “momentous”. “We have achieved together a momentous moment of landing the first 787 Dreamliner,” his statement read. “In the spirit of exploration, we are proud to have a hand in this important and unique mission.”

Norse now have 13 Dreamliners, which can usually carry up to 330 passengers. All are named for National Parks worldwide. Having left two days earlier from Oslo, Norway, “Everglades” went first to Cape Town. It lay over for 40 hours in South Africa’s oldest city, before embarking towards the Antarctic and then returning without needing to refuel.

Antarctica might not be the first destination the average traveller has in their plans, but it most certainly is on some bucket lists. Possibilities of reaching the iced continent are on the rise and so is tourism.

Author of “Away & Aware: A Field Guide to Mindful Travel”, Sara Clemence, argues in an article for the Atlantic that, in the absence of any governmental authority to monitor over the continent and faced with the increasing effects of climate change, Antarctica should be closed off to tourists.

1. The last place on Earth

Having been somewhat inaccessible to humans for centuries and only recently opened to tourism, Antarctica has an allure that few other places on Earth do – pristine, untouched wilderness. Similarly to space or deep dive tourism, visitors are drawn to the novelty of visiting not only the unique frozen landscape, but also a place where few others have ventured before. The “last chance tourism” aspect, the idea of visiting a place that will soon disappear due to climate change, further spikes interest in the destination.

It is singular, and in its relative wildness and silence, it is the last of its kind.

Clemence argues that it is exactly for this reason tourists should be banned from the continent, as their increased presence threatens the delicate environment they step into. Last summer, 100,000 tourists arrived in Antarctica, mostly by cruises, a 40% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels and incomparable to the mere few hundred visitors the continent got over the summer 4 decades ago.

2. Carbon footprint

Antarctica cannot be reached by trains or public transport, there are no environmentally friendly transport alternatives. There are only two options, planes and cruises, both needing to cross thousands of kilometres to reach the continent’s shores, burning tanks-full of fuel on the way. The carbon footprint of a person taking a cruise to Antarctica is comparable to the yearly emissions of an average European, Clemence says.

One company opened a luxury camp, only reachable by private jet, last year, even offering couples looking for something extra special the opportunity to get married in the middle of the white desert. “Guests, who pay at least $65,000 a stay, are encouraged to explore the continent by plane, Ski-Doos, and Arctic truck before enjoying a gourmet meal whose ingredients are flown in from South Africa. All of this adds up”, the writer explains.

In 2021, the world’s largest iceberg, with a surface are of 4,320 km2, broke off from the western side of the Ronne Ice Shelf, lying in the continent’s Weddell Sea. Last year, scientists predicted an alarming record decline in Antarctica’s sea ice cover, researchers showing that pollution from increased human activity in the South Pole darkened the snow, causing it to melt sooner than usual near research facilities and popular tourist sites.

3. Impact on local ecosystem

Being such a secluded environment, the ecosystem in Antarctica can easily be disturbed by alien species. Tourists can bring new viruses and bacteria to the environment and even invasive species that could completely throw the local biome out of balance. It would not be the first time humans arriving on a new continent accidentally contribute to the destruction of native species. Although the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) says tourists are asked to “decontaminate their shoes to keep novel bugs and bacteria at bay” before stepping off cruises, it seems like just a matter of time before a minor oversight potentially causes a disaster. Not to mention that membership to IAATO is voluntary and not all agencies offering visits to the South Pole are part of the association.

Moreover, hikers can stomp over native flora that takes up to decades to grow in the harsh environment of Antarctica, which is not just home to the coldest places on Earth, but is also the driest continent on our planet, getting as little precipitation – rain or snow, as the world’s hottest deserts.

Human presence has also been shown to stress out penguins, having an impact on their breeding patterns, while the increased cruise traffic can affect whale migration patterns and breeding grounds.

“Some argue that tourists become ambassadors for the continent—that is, for its protection and for environmental change. That’s laudable, but unsupported by research, which has shown that in many cases Antarctic tourists become ambassadors for more tourism”, Clemence criticises. “Putting this land off-limits would signify how fragile and important—almost sacred—it is. Putting it at risk to give deep-pocketed tourists a sense of awe is simply not worth it.”

There is a sad irony in Antarctica’s fate. Its innate appeal is what ultimately contributes to its destruction. “Maybe, despite our deepest impulses to explore, we can leave one place in the world alone”, the writer concludes.

Getting married, some of us dream about it for our whole lives, others just aren’t bothered by it. If you belong to that last category, this article might not be for you. If, however, you plan on getting married and you want to do so in an unforgettable way, you should definitely read on. Because there’s just been added a whole new wedding experience to the location wedding list. Forget Tuscany, forget Greece, forget whatever you had got in mind. Starting from now on, you can get married in the coldest place on Earth. Antarctica.

Where most of us opt for a wedding close to home in a more or less cutesy location, some like to think big when it comes to the most special day of their lives. If you’re still looking for your out-of-the-ordinary venue, the ‘Celebrating a White Wedding in a White Desert’ package by travel company Red Savannah might be something to look into. Undeniably special, there are some things to keep in mind when you’re getting married at Antarctica and the budget is just one of them.

What’s in a wedding?

First of all, let’s talk about that budget. Getting married in the coldest place on Earth will set you back a whopping $250,000, so that’s a little more than most of us tend to spend on the Big Day. Yet if you’ve got a big fat savings account, this might not be an issue for you.

Secondly, your wedding party can just include twelve people. That’s mainly due to the fact you’ll be staying in pod camps on site and there just aren’t a lot of them. This means you’ll have to be pretty selective with your guests, meaning you could hurt a couple of friends or family members in the process. Something to think about.

Courtesy of White Desert

Courtesy of White Desert

Yet what do you get for your money? You and your guests will be ziplining, exploring ice tunnels and spotting penguins. You’ll also get to make a trip to the actual South Pole. Next to that, of course, there’s the ceremony, the cake cutting, the champagne…

Yet thirdly and sadly, all of this isn’t exactly a treat for the environment. Antarctica represents a fragile ecosystem which shouldn’t be interrupted by something like a location wedding. So even those with a big fat savings account better think twice before booking…
