The Kruunuvuorensilta bridge not only stands as Finland’s longest at 1,191 metres across, but also marks a new record for the country’s tallest at 135 metres, beating the highest residential building by one metre. It connects the waterfront residential neighbourhood with the island of Korkeasaari, the district of Laajasalo, and central Helsinki.

City mayor Daniel Sazonov said: “Kruunuvuorensilta bridge is the new, unique and exciting landmark for Helsinki. A sight that will draw visitors from near and far. The new bridge reshapes how we look at Helsinki. It attaches the areas of Kruunuvuorenranta and Laajasalo in a completely new way to the larger central city area. The bridge reflects our commitment to sustainable solutions and embraces Helsinki’s unique maritime setting.”

Started in 2021 and coming in at a cost of around €326 million, according to official figures, the bridge now cuts the distance between neighbouring city districts by nearly six kilometres, and by 2030, it is predicted to be serving around 23,000 tram trips and 3,750 cycling trips per day. Work on a light rail system is ongoing.

Helsinki is implementing a long-term vision to prioritise public transport, walking and cycling in urban mobility. The majority of journeys in Helsinki are made using sustainable modes: around 41% on foot, 25% by public transport and 11% by bike, while only about 20% are made by car.

With a design life of 200 years, Kruunuvuorensilta aims to boost tram and active mobility for future generations. The bridge’s sustainability credentials can also be seen in a carbon footprint of approximately 129,000 tCO₂e, of which 76% originates from construction and 24% from operation and maintenance over a 50-year period. Emissions have been reduced through the use of low-emission materials and renewable energy sources.

The structure also features weather-proofing approaches suited to Helsinki’s cold, coastal location, with stay cables that the wind keeps in constant, slight motion, preventing ice formation. Combined with a special coating, it means the bridges can shiver away flakes of ice as they form. Like the best of Finnish design, in a country known for the happiness of its citizens, it combines practicality with a sense of fun and joy, with different colours of LED lighting up at different times of day.

For fans of Finnish architecture, one of the oldest indoor swimming pools in the Nordics re-opened in the capital earlier this year, combining Classicism and Art Deco and offering not just a place to do laps, but a heritage taste of Finland’s sauna culture.

A mock-up submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) by Harrison Design shows the “Arc de Trump” rising to 250 feet (76 metres) – a nod to the US’s 250^th anniversary – and being topped by a 60-foot (18-metre) golden, winged Lady Liberty. She is flanked by two 24-foot (7-metre) eagles and guarded by four lions. The inscriptions “One Nation Under God” and “Liberty and Justice for All” would be carved across opposite sides of the monument.

If approved, the monument, which Trump intends to resemble its French counterpart, would tower over both the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. However, its scale has drawn strong opposition, including a lawsuit from a group of Vietnam War veterans, who argue that it would obstruct long-established sightlines and “block historically significant reciprocal views”. This sight-line axis was originally designed to represent the post-Civil War reconciliation of North and South.

The Commission of Fine Arts is scheduled to review the latest plans on 16 April. The panel is responsible for approving major federal design projects in the capital and has come under scrutiny after Trump dismissed all six previous commissioners last year and replaced them with appointees who are perceived to be more aligned with his administration.

The Trump administration has described the arch as “one of the most iconic landmarks, not only in Washington, DC, but throughout the world”.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said that the proposed location near the foot of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, at Memorial Circle on Columbia Island, would serve as a “visual reminder of the noble sacrifices made by so many American heroes throughout our 250-year history, enabling us to enjoy our freedoms today”.

This idea echoes Trump’s remarks last year that “every time somebody rides over that beautiful bridge to the Lincoln Memorial, they say that something should be there”.

On social media, Trump described the project as “the GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch, anywhere in the World”, adding that it would be “a wonderful addition to the Washington DC area for all Americans to enjoy for many decades to come”.

Online reactions have been equally sharp. Some users have dismissed the project outright, calling it “sickening”, while others have criticised the timing, pointing to the financial and human costs of ongoing conflicts, including tensions with Iran, as well as broader concerns over inflation and public spending.

Costs have not yet been disclosed and are “still being calculated”. Early funding plans include $2 million from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), plus up to $13 million in matching contributions – a far cry from Trump’s earlier assertion that the project would be entirely privately funded and that any leftover White House ballroom funds would be redirected to the arch.

The arch forms only one part of a broader set of monumental ambitions. A controversial White House ballroom, which was approved by federal bodies before being halted by a judge following legal challenges, remains in limbo. Trump has also revived plans for a National Garden of American Heroes – another large-scale project aimed at reshaping the capital’s commemorative landscape.

After a successful first season, a mesh suspension bridge called The Tower’s Vertigo is back until 3 May 2026. The 40-metre-long construction spans from the Eiffel Tower’s east tower to the west tower at a height of 60 metres above ground. The bridge was made out of some 25,000 mesh panels – with a resistance of over 30,000 kg/m² – by the specialised company Arboricorde and is the highest suspension bridge in France in an urban setting.

Although not everyone will feel up to the task, The Tower’s Vertigo is accessible free of charge to all Eiffel Tower ticket holders. While visiting, daredevils can book the experience on-site on the first floor using a QR code located near the attraction. However, access is not guaranteed beforehand, especially during busy times, as only 4 people are allowed on the structure at the same time. Visitors will then need to choose a time slot within the next 60 minutes and are then expected to present themselves with the ticket received by mail at the entrance of the attraction line, exactly at the time of their slot.

The bridge is open to children ages 3 and up, although children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Running or jumping is not allowed, and visitors must follow the instructions given on-site by the teams of Arbotopia, operating the attraction. For obvious reasons, the bridge is not recommended for people suffering from severe vertigo. As it is only accessible by stairs, it is not accessible to those with reduced mobility. Moreover, strollers, suitcases, food, drinks, and high heels are not allowed on the bridge.

Although 60 metres might seem like a lot, the bridge is indeed located on the Eiffel Tower’s first and lowest floor. The second floor comes in at 116 metres, while the top floor, with its Champagne bar, stands 276 metres tall.

The 19^th-century chapel, which was once Littlemore Hospital asylum and had been transformed into office spaces in the 1980s, is set to act as a restaurant for scientists working at the EIT research campus. A lodge, which is located on the same plot of land, will be turned into a bar and entrance area.

“The Ellison Institute of Technology aims to reunite and restore both buildings into a cohesive public destination: a place that brings people together through shared culinary experiences. Located at the periphery of the campus and detached from the workplace environment, the buildings offer a unique opportunity to host and gather some of Oxford’s greatest minds to share a drink, enjoy a meal, and connect”, EIT said in an interview with design magazine Dezeen.

The project, which is currently in the planning application stage, shows a lush central garden in front of the chapel, which would be connected to the former lodge by a glazed walkway.

The overall design language will be similar to the one used by the architecture studio for the grade II-listed Eagle and Child pub renovation. That project, also located in Oxford and ordered by EIT, is Foster + Partners’ smallest construction site in years. The pub was founded in 1840 and served as the meeting spot for a literary group called the Inklings, with members including CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien.

For The Chapel & Lodge-project, Foster + Partners will once again be teaming up with heritage studio Donald Insall Associates.

While it is unclear when the The Chapel & Lodge will open its doors, the 30,000 square metre EIT research campus should be completed somewhere over the course of 2027. The campus covers a combination of previously existing, restored buildings as well as a newly-built addition. It will be part of the Oxford Science Park and will include laboratories, educational spaces, and an oncology and wellness patient clinic

The Greek islands are well-known for their beautiful, sometimes rugged coasts with crystal-blue waters. However, the once-natural coastlines are increasingly touched by development projects that are profoundly changing their outlook. Developing local tourism while preserving the natural aspect of the landscape is thus an ongoing challenge.

When designing Olen, a resort situated on the Greek island of Syros, that challenge was undoubtedly part of Ateno Architecture Studio’s mission. Instead of simply building the seven-suite resort on its cliff-edge overlooking the Aegean Sea, the studio opted for a semi-built-in “amphitheatrical” resort approach.

The resort is thus half-hidden, using a combination of terraces, subterranean rooms, and skylights to blend the building into its surroundings.

“Olen is located on a remote site on the island of Syros, where the natural landscape still prevails over the built environment. The core design ambition was to preserve this balance, despite the project’s brief calling for a relatively large-scale intervention. The project is not defined by the composition of 3D objects, but rather by the assembly of horizontal and vertical surfaces – terrace planes, retaining walls, and cuts in the terrain – allowing the architecture to read as embedded in the landscape itself”, Elias Theodorakis and Yiorgos Fiorentinos, co-founders of Ateno Architecture Studio, told design media outlet Dezeen.

An original approach

Instead of opting for a one-level building, Olen was divided into three separate levels: The Plane, The Line, and The Point. A zigzagging walkway connects the three, while the resort becomes more intimate and more exclusive as one descends the pathway.

While the non-hidden side of the buildings is mainly terracotta-hued, on the inside, guests will encounter a combination of natural materials. Stone walls are combined with wooden accents, and the off-white colour of the floors is reflected in the ceilings. Overall, the feeling is one of openness and light, despite its underground situation.

Dating back to the 17^th century, the Pont Neuf or New Bridge in Paris is actually the city’s oldest. Over the years, it has become a well-known landmark for both locals and tourists alike. Now, the French artist known as JR is planning on turning it into what might possibly be the largest immersive installation ever made, according to himself.

JR or Jean-René is no stranger to large-scale projects, ranging from graffiti to photography and everything in between, which has led some people to compare him with famous street artist Banksy in the past. Lately, however, he has taken his skills to an entirely different level, working with his team from a hangar at Paris’ Orly airport.

The result of that work will be visible to the public from 6 to 28 June 2026 at – or rather on – the Pont Neuf. For three weeks, La Caverne du Pont Neuf will turn the bridge into an immersive art installation, measuring some 120 meters in length and over 17 meters in height.

“We’re about to leave something pretty incredible in the middle of Paris”, JR told the Associated Press during an interview.

Seen from outside, the project will transform the famous landmark into an enormous mass of rock that will be visible from far away, including from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Inside, visitors will get the illusion of walking through a long tunnel-like structure, with no daylight or other reminders of the world outside. The goal is for people to lose track of time and to be entirely immersed in the experience.

An immersive collaboration

To make that immersion even more complete, JR has joined forces with Thomas Bangalter, formerly known as a member of the French rock band Daft Punk, to create a special sound compilation and with Snap’s AR studio in Paris to develop a dedicated augmented reality technology. The result of that collaboration remains a well-kept secret at the moment of writing, but according to the artist, people will be able to experience and see things that they can’t see with their eyes.

Although the bridge will look like a massive rock, the entire project will mostly be made up of air, weighing just 5 tonnes. To make sure the piece of art stays put, however, 130 tonnes of weights have been added. The canvas was made entirely in France and uses minimal waste, while the artist is looking for ways to repurpose the textile afterwards to reduce its environmental impact even more.

For those who have been wondering about any possible ties with that other Pont Neuf project in the 80’s: yes, JR sees his work as an homage to the work of the artistic duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In 1985, they used some 13 kilometres of rope and 12 tonnes of chains to wrap the bridge in a golden-like texture.

Just like Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s installation, visiting La Caverne du Pont Neuf will be free of charge. During the time of the art installation, it will be open 24/7, allowing anyone passing through Paris to enjoy the spectacle with their own eyes. Booking is not required, but visitor numbers will be monitored in order to ensure the safety of all.

The Waldorf Astoria Miami was also designed by Carlos Ott in collaboration with Sieger Suarez Architects. It is characterised by stacked glass volumes placed on top of one another. Together, the two high-rise projects will significantly change the skyline of this part of Downtown Miami with a contrast that, according to the architects, is intentional.

The Delano tower has a fluid, canoe-like shape, meaning it is long and gently curved like a boat. The glass façade reflects sunlight and the surrounding city, helping the tower appear lighter despite its height. At the top, the crown curves inward to form a smooth point. Glass layers seem to peel slightly away near the top, giving the structure a sculpted look. 

The building is being developed by Property Markets Group (PMG) together with hospitality company Ennismore. It will contain 421 private residences, ranging from studios to larger multi-bedroom apartments. The interiors are designed by New York studio Meyer Davis. Facilities will include a fitness centre, spa areas, pools and social spaces. A public observation deck is also planned, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views over Miami and Biscayne Bay. 

The project is described as a “vertical resort”. This means the experience of a holiday resort is recreated inside a tall building. Different levels will offer different atmospheres, from wellness areas to restaurants and bars. Terraces will run along both sides of the tower, creating outdoor spaces high above the ground. The idea is to blend indoor and outdoor living, something that suits Miami’s warm climate. 

Delano Residences will be the first standalone branded residences for Delano Hotels. Branded residences are private apartments linked to a well-known hotel or luxury brand. Owners often receive hotel-style services such as concierge support, housekeeping and access to global membership programmes. The Delano name is strongly connected to Miami. The historic Delano Miami Beach first opened in 1947 and became famous for its design and nightlife scene. 

The new tower forms part of a wider transformation of Miami’s skyline. The city already has more than 300 high-rise buildings and the third-largest skyline in the United States. Currently, the tallest building is Panorama Tower, which reaches 265 metres. Several new projects aim to go even higher, as developers compete to create Miami’s tallest structure. 

Among them automotive brands are joining the trend as well: Mercedes-Benz Places will feature hundreds of residences inspired by the company’s design language, while Bentley Residences includes a patented car elevator that transports vehicles directly to private garages. On Miami Beach, luxury hospitality group Aman is developing Aman Miami Beach. This approach to branded living is part of a growing global trend: Mercedes-Benz, for example, has also announced similar branded residences in Dubai, combining design, lifestyle, and exclusive services. 

With construction expected to take around five and a half years, Delano Residences Miami reflects both architectural ambition and the growing demand for branded living in the city.

Comprising 10,000 luxury housing units, a 4,000-suite five-star property, convention and events facilities, as well as wellness venues, hotels, lounges, and restaurants, the development’s unique selling point is its central lunar attraction, a focal point that Henderson has called “the largest sphere in the world. It’s a true sphere. You can actually walk underneath it. It’s not a dome.”

Independent engineers and architects have been on board with developing the concept, which is expected to cost US$5 billion per licensee and call for significant government backing. Offering a lunar surface and simulated lunar base colony, the project seeks to tap into the growing worldwide fascination with the Moon and lunar tourism experiences, a trend which Henderson argues chimes perfectly with Dubai’s instant recognition.

Dismissing rumours that the project could see fruition in Saudi Arabia, Henderson told Gulf News that budget questions and feasibility issues mean “Saudi is probably not suitable for our project.” However, other Middle Eastern candidates for Moon World could be Bahrain, Oman, or Qatar. But Dubai is “very hard to compete against,” Henderson said, highlighting that Dubai and Abu Dhabi both possess the infrastructure, connectivity, and tourist arrival numbers that the development demands.

Slated for earliest completion by 2032, Moon World should be accessibly priced, if the founders are allowed to impose their philosophy, which is that space tourism should be accessible, costing no more than a rock concert, or about $500 (around €421) for 90 minutes. Henderson is also adamant that the project is not “a theme park. It’s an adult-oriented facility,” that will offer space training in addition to space tourism experiences.

Despite the hype, Moon World is not the first giant sphere project to aim to capture consumers’ attention. The Sphere at the Venetian in Las Vegas is currently the world’s largest spherical structure at nearly 110 metres tall and equipped with nearly 54,000m² of fully programmable LEDs for an immersive experience.

The Atomium, in the north of Brussels, was built as a flagship emblem for the 1958 World Expo. Designed to celebrate the potential of science and atomic breakthroughs for improving life on earth, the structure is a cube formed of connected metal spheres, positioned on its tip to represent an elementary iron crystal, scaled up 165 billion times. Its unique appearance has become recognisable the world over.

In 2006, the Atomium re-opened after an extensive refresh, which saw its entire outer skin peeled away and replaced by stainless steel. In a testament to how popular the building is, one thousand of its original aluminium plates were auctioned off to raise money for the refurbishment.

Prior to the renovation, the Atomium, which was never intended to be a permanent structure, welcomed around 150,000 visitors annually, but that has increased more than fivefold to nearly 800,000 in the last two years, making the structure the Belgian capital’s most popular attraction. Nearly seven decades after its “temporary” construction and nearly a quarter of a century after its renovation, the Atomium is now laying on a calendar of over 20 activities to acknowledge that turning point in its history.

Three digital art installations are part of the celebrations. A nocturnal show, Rotonde by Belgian studio Dirty Monitor, provides night-time illuminations and an original audio composition. Supply Chain, by artist Roman Tardy, immerses visitors among mirrors, LED modules, and original sound to explore the poetry and infrastructure of the digital realm, while Nimbus by Visual System aims to reinterpret the original structure’s forms through sensory light and soundscapes

Events also include scientific discovery weekends aimed at younger visitors, and other Belgian icons are getting in on the action, thanks to a collaboration with another Belgian icon—cartoon family, the Smurfs, and a new costume for the capital’s famous Manneken Pis statue. What’s more, jewellery designer Souris is making a bespoke collection for the anniversary.

As a special treat, anyone born on 18 February 2006 will benefit from free access to the monument throughout the renovations’ anniversary year of 2026. Entitled “Renovation,” the series will explore what happened during the monument’s refurbishment work, including perspectives from engineers, staff, and Brussels locals.

Free access will be available on 14 February from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on 15 February from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Following the close of registration last night, winners are being notified today (9 February) of their success in the online draw, with 8,500 winners being selected. Each winner will receive up to four tickets, enabling families and friends to visit together.

As part of a broader effort by the Sagrada Família to mark next year’s milestones, all Barcelona residents who are not among the 8,500 free ticket winners will be eligible for a 50% discount on tickets throughout 2026, in tribute to the centenary of the Catalan architect who transformed Barcelona’s skyline.

This initiative is one of several events planned for ‘Gaudí Year’ in 2026, which has been declared by the authorities. The Gaudí Council, an advisory body to the Catalan Ministry of Culture, aims to use the anniversary to deepen public understanding of the architect’s legacy and its continued relevance to contemporary urban life.

Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882. Despite interruptions caused by war and funding challenges, it is now expected to be completed within the next few years. Last year, the basilica reached its final height of 172.5 metres, making it the tallest church in the world.

As previously reported by Travel Tomorrow, city authorities recently announced measures to curb the so-called ‘selfie circus‘ that forms daily around the basilica, where crowds gathering for photos have increasingly disrupted local life. To ease congestion, the city has invested €2.7 million in creating an ‘anteroom’ square on Carrer de la Marina, which is designed to better manage visitor flows. Completion is expected by April 2026, just in time for the main centenary events and the crowds that will surely flock to the city ahead of the UIA World Congress of Architects.

The Sagrada Família attracts close to five million visitors annually, with tickets normally costing between €26 and €40, depending on the type of visit.
