1. What Is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Although it is now closely associated with Christianity, its origins can be traced to pagan celebrations of spring and fertility, including the raucous Roman festivals of Saturnalia, held in mid December, and Lupercalia, held in mid February.

When Christianity spread through Rome, religious leaders chose to incorporate these popular local traditions into the new faith rather than abolish them. As a result, Mardi Gras became a prelude to Lent, the 40 days of fasting and penance between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Along with Christianity, the celebrations spread from Rome to other European countries, including France, Germany, Spain and England. Today, Mardi Gras is observed in many parts of the world, particularly in countries with large Roman Catholic populations, in the days leading up to Lent.

2. The meaning of Mardi Gras

In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. Mardi means Tuesday in French, while gras means fat. Traditionally, in the days leading up to Lent, households would consume rich, fatty foods such as meat, eggs, milk and cheese, in anticipation of several weeks of fasting or abstaining from certain ingredients.

The term Carnival, another common name for the festivities, also derives from this feasting tradition. It comes from the Medieval Latin carnelevarium, meaning to remove meat, itself from the Latin carnem for meat. Originally, Fat Tuesday marked the beginning of the celebrations. Today, in many destinations, Mardi Gras has evolved into a week long or even month long festival season.

3. New Orleans Mardi Gras

One of the most famous Mardi Gras celebrations takes place in New Orleans, in the US state of Louisiana. The first American Mardi Gras is believed to have occurred on 3 March 1699, when French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville landed near present day New Orleans and held a small celebration, naming their landing site Point du Mardi Gras.

In the decades that followed, New Orleans and other French settlements marked the occasion with street parties, masked balls and lavish dinners. When Spain took control of Louisiana, the rituals were temporarily abolished, a ban that remained in place until Louisiana became a US state in 1812.

In 1827, a group of students donned colourful costumes and paraded through the streets of New Orleans, inspired by the celebrations they had witnessed in Paris. Ten years later, the first recorded Mardi Gras parade took place in the city. In 1857, the Mistick Krewe of Comus organised a torch lit procession with marching bands and decorated floats, establishing traditions that continue to shape the city’s Carnival culture.

Since then, krewes have become a defining feature of Mardi Gras in Louisiana. Long standing customs include throwing beads and other trinkets to crowds, wearing elaborate masks and costumes, decorating floats and enjoying seasonal treats such as King Cake.

Beyond Louisiana, other US states such as Alabama and Mississippi also host large scale Mardi Gras festivities, each with its own traditions. However, Louisiana remains the only state where Mardi Gras is an official public holiday.

4. Mardi Gras around the world

Mardi Gras and Carnival celebrations take many different forms around the globe. In Brazil, week-long Carnival festivities combine European, African and Indigenous influences in vibrant parades and samba performances. In Quebec City, Canada, the Quebec Winter Carnival embraces ice sculptures, night parades and winter sports. In Venice, Italy, Carnevale dates back to the 13^th century and is renowned for its elegant masquerade balls and ornate masks.

The German Karneval, also known as Fastnacht or Fasching depending on the region, features parades, costume balls and the playful tradition of women cutting off men’s ties on certain days of the festivities. In Denmark, Fastelavn sees children dress up in costumes and collect sweets, reflecting local interpretations of pre Lent traditions.

Ultimately, whether expressed through samba parades in Brazil, masked balls in Venice or bead throwing in New Orleans, Mardi Gras remains a celebration of colour, community and indulgence before the reflective season of Lent begins.

1. Houska Castle, Prague, Czech Republic

Forty-six kilometres from Prague lies Houska Castle, also known as the gateway to Hell. The construction, built in the second half of the 13^th century at the supposed request of Bohemian ruler Ottokar II, was erected along with its chapel over a large hole.

The hole is said to be so dark and deep that it is impossible to see the bottom, and folklore describes how animal-human hybrids and dark-winged, otherworldly creatures crawled and flew from its depths, including a bullfrog-human creature and a headless horse.

It is believed that the Gothic building was an attempt to keep these demons trapped. Legend has it that during construction, inmates sentenced to death were offered a pardon in return for being lowered into the hole to explore and report back. Those who did reportedly returned screaming and aged.

The castle was built on flat land with no fortifications, kitchen, or water source, no occupants and no nearby trade routes, leading many to believe it was indeed, and perhaps still is, the gateway to Hell.

2. Ćele Kula, Niš, Serbia

Ćele Kula, from the Turkish Kelle kulesi meaning “skull tower”, is located in Niš, Serbia, and, as its name suggests, is a stone tower covered with human skulls with a rather chilling past.

Constructed by the Ottomans following the Battle of Čegar in May 1809 during the First Serbian Uprising, the tower is made from the skulls of the fallen rebels. Standing 4.5 metres high, the tower originally used 952 skulls embedded on four sides in 14 rows.

Building monuments using the skulls of their enemies was a common Ottoman tactic to scare opponents and discourage rebellion, and Skull Tower was a clear warning to any residents contemplating revolt. Nowadays, however, it is a popular tourist destination and has become an emblem of Serbia’s struggle for independence.

3. Eltz Castle, Wierschem, Germany

Eltz Castle, a medieval fortress nestled in the hills of Wierschem, Germany, is owned by the Eltz family, who have lived there for 33 generations since the 12^th century. The castle has become an emblem of Germany, and although its past is no more turbulent or gruesome than other castles of its time, the imposing Gothic structure, coupled with its atmospheric setting of forests and hills, makes for a somewhat spooky destination.

The exterior was used for the fictional American military lunatic asylum in The Ninth Configuration, the 1979 film by William Peter Blatty, and the opening sequences of Le Feu de Wotan, a Belgian comic book, also take place in Eltz Castle. Now a tourist destination, a visit to this castle on a misty autumn night is sure to make anyone shiver.

4. Blood Falls, Taylor Valley, Antarctica

Blood Falls in Antarctica looks like any other water flow running from a glacier, except that it’s blood red. Oozing over the Taylor Glacier, the contrast of crimson red liquid over the ice is quite alarming and definitely a scary sight.

Of course, this is not actually a bleeding glacier. When it was first discovered more than 100 years ago, it was believed that the disturbing colour of the water was caused by red algae. It actually took until 2017 for the mystery to be solved. Scientists realised that the colour comes from oxidised iron and water from a five-million-year-old saltwater lake, so definitely not blood. Still, it makes for a pretty spectacular Halloween scene.

5. Pripyat Amusement Park, Pripyat, Ukraine

Abandoned amusement parks have long been a cliché setting for horror movies, so Pripyat Amusement Park, which is exactly that, is definitely not somewhere to be found after dark.

The park was due to open in May 1986 to honour the USSR’s May Day celebrations. However, the infamous Chernobyl disaster, which occurred only a few kilometres away the month before the scheduled opening, cancelled those plans.

The amusement park never opened and has since become a symbol of the disaster. The ghostly empty Ferris wheel and bumper-car track, along with the location’s tragic history, provide a more than adequate setting for one of the planet’s scariest places.

1. What’s in a word

Pintxos originated in San Sebastian (Donostia in Basque), a coastal city in the Basque Autonomous Community in northern Spain. The word itself is Basque for pincho, which in turn comes form the Spanish verb ‘pinchar‘ meaning ‘to pierce’. Given the traditional appearance of pintxos, a slice of bread topped with varying ingredients (Spanish ham, tortilla, fish, meat etc.), pierced with a cocktail stick to hold it together, this is a very apt name.

2. A tasty treat

Like tapas, pintxos come in a huge variety. There are many different toppings which can be used to make these special creations, although they often involve meat or fish, and often fried (also like tapas). In Spain lunch is eaten late and is the main meal of the day, so pintxos are a easy snack for dinner, especially with friends or colleagues in a bar after work, and often combined with a drink. They are usually served buffet style on the bar, for you to choose yourself, and it is common to collect the cocktail sticks from your pintxos, once eaten, and present these when you pay, where you will be charged according to number and size.

3. A history of pintxos

The concept of pinxtos was created when the trend for tapas reached the Basque Country in the 1930s, notably San Sebastian, the foodie capital of Spain. Instead of serving simple tapa dishes, certain bars in the city started to create miniature portions of their dishes, displaying them along the bar for customers to help themselves, and spearing each one with a wooden cocktail stick so that it was easier for their clients to keep them together. Later on in the 1940s the trend spread to other Basque cities such as Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Pamplona, where they are still popular today.

4. Where to eat them

The popularity of pintxos has spread over the years and they can now be found (and eaten) in various places around the country. However, they are most common in northern Spain and for authenticity the Basque Country cannot be beaten. Cities like Bilbao and San Sebastian are known for their numerous pintxo bars and the extensive options they offer, and you can find them in bars, restaurants and food markets alike (Ribera Market in Bilbao is worth a trip!). The appearance and manner of serving may vary, sometimes you may pick your own, whilst at other times you may have to ask over the counter, and there are times then the pintxos may not necessarily have cocktail sticks or bread with them either. There are even several bars in San Sebastian with pintxo menus, creating fresh pintxos cooked to order, and the dish has also become associated with Basque gourmet cuisine, with many top Michelin-starred chefs across the region pushing boundaries with unusual flavours and ingredients and bringing a modern twist to the the classic pintxo.

5. Pintxopote

In the Basque Country pintxos are an important part of life, summed up in the weekly pintxopote celebrations. A great combination of food, alcohol and socialising, pintxopote is traditionally one evening a week where bars offer one pintxo free for every drink bought.

Locals head to their nearest bars to meet friends and make the most of the pintxopote offer, meaning that in towns around the region, streets are filled with residents catching up with friends over a drink and pintxo, or several. 1. Raglan Castle, South East Wales

Raglan Castle is undeniably one of the country’s grandest castles, and a popular film set, (parts of the British TV series Merlin, among others, were filmed here). Set against a dramatic backdrop of beautiful Welsh countryside, it was built 150 years after the turbulent heyday of castle-building and designed to impress and intimidate. Sir William ap Thomas, the ‘blue knight of Gwent’, created the moated Great Tower of 1435, which still stands, whilst his son Sir William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, added the equally longstanding gatehouse with its impressive defence system.

Under ownership by several earls of Worcester, the fortress-palace became a magnificent country seat, with a fashionable long gallery and one of the finest Renaissance gardens in Britain. However, loyalty to the crown caused its downfall, and despite a garrison of 800 men and one of the longest sieges of the English Civil War, it fell to parliamentary forces and was deliberately destroyed. Interestingly, one piece of looted treasure, a piece of Tudor wooden panelling, was discovered in a cow shed in the 1950s. Today, the castle remains an impressive structure to visit and walk inside.

2. Conwy Castle, North Wales

Conwy Castle is arguably one of the most magnificent medieval fortresses in Europe, and still towers over the town of Conwy after 700 years. King Edward I and his architect Master James of St George built both the castle and 1.3km ring of walls which surround the town in only four years (1283-1287), an incredible feat recognised by its classification as a World Heritage Site.

This famous fortress remains amazingly well preserved, and contains the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales. The high curtain wall and eight lofty towers rise impressively, and thanks to the restored spiral staircases in these towers, you can walk a complete circuit around the battlements of the castle. Far off in the distance, the craggy Welsh mountains of Snowdonia are visible, whilst below are the harbour and narrow streets of Conwy.

3. Caerphilly Castle, South Wales

It was for fear of a Welsh prince, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, that Caerphilly Castle, the mightiest medieval castle in Wales, was constructed. Despite the fact that he tried twice to knock it down before it was finished. The rise of the powerful Prince of Wales led Marcher Lord Gilbert de Clare to build the formidable fortress in double-quick time, and from 1268 he constructed the biggest castle in Wales, and second only to Windsor in the whole of Britain. With its massive walls, towers and gatehouses, and sprawling water defences covering a total of 30 acres, it was truly an immense building.

After Llywelyn’s death, the fortress was transformed into a palatial home, complete with hunting park and northern lake, with the great hall later being revamped in ornate style. Today the castle stands majestically, its south-east tower, leaning at a precarious angle due to damage from Civil War gunpowder attacks, now one of its best-loved features. An impressive sight to behold.

4. Caernarfon Castle, South Wales

Caernarfon Castle, is recognised around the world as one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages and is a World Heritage Site. It was built as part of a project by Edward I and his military architect, Master James of St George, in which they constructed the castle, town walls and quay over a 47 year period, costing £25,000.

It stands majestically on the banks of the River Seionm, however it is not just the structure, but the history of this castle which is important. Here, on 25th April 1284, Queen Eleanor gave birth to the royal prince, later to become Edward II, beginning a new royal dynasty. In 1301, he was presented to the Welsh nobility as a prince ‘that was borne in Wales and could speak never a word of English’, and he became the first English Prince of Wales. So, for the last 700 years, the title Prince of Wales has traditionally been taken by the eldest son of the reigning monarch. In 1911 Caernarfon Castle hosted the investiture of Prince Edward (thanks to Britain’s only Welsh prime minister so far, David Lloyd George) and in 1969 the Castle again played an important role, hosting the investiture of Prince Charles.

5. Cardiff Castle, South Wales

In the heart of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, sits Cardiff Castle, a remarkable site with an equally impressive history spanning over 2000 years. From housing Roman soldiers, to witnessing noble knights hold court, the Castle has a rich past.

The building’s ownership by the Bute family saw its transformation into a romantic Victorian fantasy, as ‘eccentric genius’ architect William Burges was given free rein to create amazingly lavish and opulent interiors. A visit in the present day reveals its breathtaking rooms, rich with murals, stained glass, gilding and superb craftsmanship, an insight into the wealthy life of the family. Meanwhile more recent developments such as the Wartime Shelters reveal another bygone era, when the Castle’s tunnels were used as a place of refuge during the Second World War air raids. So many years of history and so much to explore.

Travelling by bicycle contributes to cleaner air and less congestion and makes important aspects of our lives, such as education, health care and other social services, more accessible to the most vulnerable populations. It is a sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth and reduces inequalities all while helping in the fight against climate change. Plus, cycling is just plain good for us, both physically and mentally.

So, for anyone who remains unconvinced, in honour of World Bicycle Day, here are 10 reasons why you should clean up that old bicycle at the back of the shed, sign up to your local bike scheme, book that cycling holiday, or simply borrow or rent one for the day to remind yourself of that exhilarating feeling only cycling can provide!

1. A fun way to exercise

Let’s start with an obvious one, cycling is a fun way to exercise! Many of us learn to cycle as children, so those fond memories of zipping around on your bike, filled with that energy that only children seem to have, are easily brought back once we’re back in the saddle, even as adults.

At the same time, there are so many health benefits to cycling. Sport in the fresh air is great for your lungs, and the exercise builds up both muscle and stamina, as well as burning plenty of calories. This can help you sleep deeper, and of course there’s the endorphins, or happiness hormones, that are released when exercising.

2. It’s accessible on a budget

No fuel is needed, only you! Compared to cars, bikes can be bought and maintained on a low budget, and provide cheap entertainment and transport. And even free bikes are readily available thanks to the internet and apps which help buyers find what they’re looking for in their area. You can also sometimes find free bike workshops where they teach you and help you maintain your bike for free/little cost, or you can sign up to local bike schemes and borrow bikes rather than buy your own, avoiding maintenance altogether.

3. It’s ecological

Of course another huge bonus to bicycles not needing fuel is that they do not pollute. They are a key tool in the effort to reduce emissions and tackle climate change, whether by choosing a cycling holiday, opting to do your commute by bike, or just heading off for a day out on your bike rather than driving, all of these help save our precious environment.

4. Increased flexibility

On your bike, you’re not dependent on another form of transport, you won’t spend ages waiting for that train or bus, or stuck in your car in heavy traffic, or even waste time looking for a parking space. You can decide for yourself when and where to go, and at what pace you get there. You can improvise as you go along, and although for long distances it is always advisable to bring a map, you are more flexible in altering your journey, or making a stop off on route, and when you are ready to go again you can simply hop back on your bike.

5. Get out into nature

You can experience being out in nature in a whole new way by bicycle. Travelling further than you would on foot, you are much more immersed in your environment than you would be in a car or bus. This is even true in the city, as you are more aware of the noises of the neighbourhood when biking. You can also explore places that may not be so accessible to larger vehicles, quaint villages or tiny road tracks, or take shortcuts down small side streets.

6. Travel slow and with a new perspective

Nowadays there is increasing awareness around the need to travel slowly and responsibly, and bicycles are the perfect way to do this. Using your bike for a local journey you usually make by car, bus or train, offers you a new perspective on a route you may think you already know back to front. Exploring new areas on days out or on holiday is ideally done by bike. You get to see places at a slower pace, to really experience them, to get an authentic version of the area not just the tourist one. You learn about the destination, its people and its culture. It is not just about where you go, it’s about how you get there, and cycling certainly reminds us of this.

7. Make memories and stories

Cycling adventures make for great memories and stories. A day out with friends or family, or a trip done alone which you remember with a smile. There are also some great experiences designed especially for cyclists nowadays, and all of these enrich our lives and memories.

8. You can finally seize that photo opportunity

There’s always those places you pass by in the car or bus, looking out the window but before you can even see properly, let alone snap a picture, you’re moving past and its gone. Cycling means you can finally get that perfect picture, stop to appreciate those places and moments and capture it on camera to save for another day.

9. Join a community

Cycling is different to driving or being a passenger, cyclists are a community. You smile at someone nearby also putting their bike in the same bike rack, or wave as you pass a fellow cyclist struggling on a quiet road, even chat as you wait at a traffic light alongside a stranger. It’s a whole collection of people of which you can’t be part of from behind the steering wheel of your car or from your seat at the back of the bus.

10. Sense of achievement

When was the last time you parked your car after a journey and congratulated yourself? Or smiled with a sense of achievement as you walked out the metro station? Cycling is of course hard work, but it pays off. The thrill of the challenges you overcome provide you with the joy of having achieved something, of having got through a physical hurdle, or completed a zero-emission journey, or simply had an enjoyable, healthy day out. It’s unique and worthwhile, so why not give it a go? And there’s no better time than World Bicycle Day!

2. Parque del Buen Retiro

Added to the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List this year, a morning stroll around Madrid’s famous and beautiful park is a must. Jardines del Buen Retiro (Gardens of Pleasant Retreat) is a 120-hectare site and a remnant of the 17th-century Buen Retiro Palace. Here you’ll find various impressive water features, many different gardening styles from the 19th century to the present, a peaceful boating lake, and the terraced Royal Botanical Garden. There is also the largely residential neighbourhood of Barrio Jerónimos with its rich variety of 19th and 20th century buildings.

3. Palacio de Cibeles

This majestic building was in fact Madrid’s post office headquarters until 2011, but is now the home of Madrid City Council and a visitor attraction. It offers incredible views from its observation deck and is in general a marvellous building worth a few moments of admiration.

4. Art galleries

Around the Retiro Park is a triangle of Madrid’s three most famous art galleries (among many as the city offers plenty!). Whilst in the area, if art is an interest of yours be sure to take a look around the Prado, which houses classical paintings, The Reina Sofia, a modern art gallery, or the Thyssen-Bornemisza, which has a little bit of everything.

5. Plaza Mayor

Perfect for a coffee break or lunch, head to Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s main square. With a long past, it has been the scene of everything from coronations to bullfights and beheadings. Take a stroll around or perch yourself at a bar and soak up the atmosphere, a famous Madrid bocadillo de calamares (calamari sandwich) in hand.

6. Palacio Real de Madrid

Also nearby is the Royal Palace of Madrid, the official residence of Spain’s royal family. Nowadays it is used for official ceremonies only, and members of the public can visit the palace to admire the centuries’ worth of grand paintings, furniture and armour.

7. Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol, also called kilometre zero, sits at the very centre of Spain and all roads in the country lead here. You’ll also see here the the famous bear and strawberry tree statue which is the official symbol of Madrid.

8. Gran Via

To soak up the real essence of Madrid, stroll down the city’s most famous street, Gran Via. For a good view of the iconic Schweppes sign which it is famous for, go to the top of the Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience, and aside from this just enjoy the sights the famous street offers.

1. Trans-Siberian Express, Russia

The Trans-Siberian Express runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, making it the world’s longest train journey. 2. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

The Rocky Mountaineer offers beautiful Canadian scenery combined with luxury. Make yourself comfortable as you pass mountains, hot springs, aquamarine lakes, gorgeous National Parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are three routes; First passage to the West, Journey through the clouds, and Rainforest to gold rush, as well as circle journeys for those who can’t decide. Whilst meals are served on the train with locally inspired dishes, there are stops offs in luxury hotels each night to ensure a good nights sleep. Coaches have panoramic views and outdoor viewing areas which provide a truly unique experience.

3. The Seven Stars, Japan

It is difficult to find a more luxurious form of travel that Japan’s luxury trains, and The Seven Stars train is no exception. The train explores Kyushu and its seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Miyazaki, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima. The seven stars are also meant to represent the 7 most important aspects of a visit to Kyushu: hot springs, nature, power spots, history & culture, food, the friendliness of its people, and its train system. There are two different travel options, a 4 days/3 nights trip which makes a large circuit around all of Kyushu, with its most famous hot springs, volcanoes, and urban areas, and a 2 days/1 night trip which focuses on the northern half of Kyushu, starting in Fukuoka and passing by Oita and Nagasaki. The train is the absolute height of luxury travel and designed to hark back to a time of high class travel as well as to push train travel ever forwards. The suites have a retro feel but offer large windows with an expansive view of the countryside.

4. Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru

5. TranzAlpine, New Zealand

The TranzAlpine in New Zealand runs coast to coast through the Southern Alps across the mountainous spine of the country’s South Island. Starting in Christchurch on the east coast of the Island, the train passes the plains of Canterbury then onto Springfield. The section between here and the township of Arthur’s Pass is considered a masterpiece of railway engineering and the most famous section of the TranzAlpine. The route then follows Waimakariri River gorge onto the high plains of Craigieburn and the iconic views of the Craigieburn Straight. Otira Tunnel marks the transition from Canterbury to West Coast and the landscape becomes extremely different, more green and vibrant. Finally, the TranzAlpine reaches the mountainous hills and broad meandering riverbeds of Greymouth, the trains terminus.

1. Alhambra

Of course Granada’s main attraction, although by no means the only one, is the Alhambra, and for good reason. There are few fortresses as impressive as this one, which dates back to when Spain was under Moorish rule between the 8^th and 15^th centuries, and is the greatest surviving relic of the era. Located at the top of the Darro Valley looking down on the city, the Alhambra offers both impressive views and incredible architecture and beauty. The fortress originally dates from the 9^th century, although the fort and walls were rebuilt in the 13^th century by Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar, Moorish ruler of what was then the Emirate of Granada. If possible, it is worth visiting the Alhambra both during the day and at night; the light of day shows the intricacy and skill of the building, whilst at night time the combination of light and water pools in the fortress makes for a magical experience.

2. Generalife

Next to the Alhambra is the Generalife, which functioned as the fortress’ Summer Palace. The gardens are exquisite, with winding paths and elegant archways alongside beautiful flowerbeds and ponds. There is also an external walkway which connects the north side of the Generalife to the south side and boasts incredible views of the old Arabic neighbourhood of Granada called Albaicín.

3. Albaicín

After having viewed it from afar, delve deeper into the city’s oldest neighbourhood. Wander the network tiny cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, located on the hillside opposite the Alhambra with the Darro River between them. Once you’ve reached the top, the views from popular square Mirador San Nicolás are worth the trip, and Plaza Larga is also particularly pretty. There are several teterías or tea rooms in this are so it’s a great opportunity for a little sit down with refreshments.

4. Alcaicería

Back in the day the Alcaicería was Granada’s Great Bazaar, filled with merchants selling silks and spices along every street. Nowadays it is a single passageway with souvenir shops of varying quality, but for a nice souvenir of Granada it is worth a look. Some of the more authentic crafts include the Fajalauza ceramics, Moorish-style earthenware hand-painted with blue or green motifs of plants, and taracea, inlaid furniture and other wooden decorative items which have beautifully intricate patterns. A prefect spot for browsing.

5. Cathedral

Demonstrating another era of Granada’s history is the city’s cathedral, the Cathedral of the Incarnation, located in the centre of old Granada.The huge building has an intriguing mixture of styles including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, started in 1518 and built over a period of 180 years with successive architects. There are still two 80 metre towers still to be built, which although originally planned, only half of one tower was ever finished. There are also several restaurants around this central area, so a lunch stop here is always a good idea.

6. Realejo

If you’re looking for another charming neighbourhood to wander around, head to Realejo, Granada’s old Jewish quarter. An added interest to the area is the various artists’ works displayed on the walls along the way, including local spray-paint artist Raul Ruiz, also known as “El Niño.” Take your time to explore and admire the designs as you go.

7. Bañuelo Arabic Baths

The Bañuelo baths are the oldest and best-preserved Arabic baths in Spain, dating back to around the 11^th century. Although most baths were destroyed following the re-conquest as they had a bad reputation and were seen as being like brothels, Bañuelo baths survived thanks to being underneath a private home built at the time the city was taken. Located about halfway along the Carrera del Darro, although the baths themselves have long since vanished the elegant Moorish archways and domed starred ceilings are still amazingly intact after a thousand years and are a beautiful example of Moorish architecture in Granada.

8. Caves of Sacromonte

Another of Granada’s famous attractions is Sacromonte, the gypsy quarter of the city. Visible from the Alhambra, as it sits in the hills opposite, it is filled with white caves carved out of the rock where many locals still live, as well a some made from scrap metal, wood, and cloth. It is the flamenco neighbourhood, with frequent spontaneous flamenco gatherings held late into the night as well as more scheduled tourist shows. Further into the wild mountainous countryside above is the neighbourhood’s popular historical location, the Abbey of Sacromonte and the Holy Caves annexed to it. Built in the 17^th century by Archbishop Pedro de Castro y Quiñones, the now neglected abbey is an interesting visit. Socromonte also has several restaurants perfect for dinner, and don’t forget the tapas law in Granada, any restaurant serving a drink has to legally serve a tapa alongside it for free! These range in size of course, but still a great idea to be taken advantage of whilst visiting.

9. Viewpoint Mirador de San Miguel

The valley location of Granada means there are many impressive viewpoints around the city. Most neighbourhoods have a popular spot or two which boast amazing views of the rest of the area, but if you aren’t afraid of a bit of climb, head to Mirador de San Miguel.

A spectacular scene of the Alhambra and the city below and even the mountains in the background stretches out before you, truly the best way to see Granada and a lovely way to end your busy day as the sun sets over the city.

1. Brussels, Belgium

Belgian chocolate is renowned worldwide and with good reason! The country’s capital boasts not only a huge variety of top quality goods, but the praline, the most delicious of chocolates, was invented here. The city has an important history in the production of chocolate and to this day has an impressive amount of chocolatiers, with about one per 2,000 people. That’s a lot of choice! There are those that specialise in the artisanal, those that pride themselves on their innovation, and of course the classic brands such as Godiva and Leonidas.

Brussels even has a Musée du Cacao et du Chocolate. Located in a three-story house, the museum has a history section, demonstration kitchen where you can watch makers in action, and of course the chance to taste some freshly made chocolate!

2. Cologne, Germany

Germany is worthy of a place on this list given that it exports more chocolate around the world than any other country. The home base for this is Cologne, and a trip here is certainly necessary to establish the quality on offer. The chocolate museum Schokoladenmuseum is impressively located on a dock reaching out into the Rhine River, and the the three-floor building covers the entire history of chocolate. Take a look at the historic materials used, or marvel at the recreations, like the tropical rainforest exhibit with real cacao trees and the bean-to-bar manufacturing exhibit.The chocolate-focused restaurant is a must-visit, where you’ll find more than your fill of the sweet treat to try!

3. Oaxaca, Mexico

Given that Central America is the birthplace of chocolate, a trip to Oaxaca in Mexico to discover the plant’s place in the history of the country is highly recommended. Oaxaca certainly shows this to the full, with beans for sale in the street along with all different types of drinking chocolate. Additionally, chocolate is a very important ingredient in one of Oaxaca’s most famous sauces, mole, which you’ll need to try, whilst a trip to Mina Street will reveal shop after shop selling their chocolatey goods. Browse the many small family shops as well as the larger names like Mayordomo Chocolate, who serve a traditional hot chocolate drink made with spices and milk or water, and La Soledad who sell the chocolate-honey drink chocomiel.

4. St. Lucia

Another place where chocolate has played an enormous role in both its past and present is the Caribbean, and in St. Lucia you’ll find numerous cocoa estates you can visit. At the Emerald Farm and Chocolate Lab in the Jade Mountain resort you can learn about production amongst 2,000 cacao trees, definitely a memorable place. You can also immerse yourself at Hotel Chocolat, a boutique hotel located on an old chocolate estate where you can pick your own cocoa beans, relax with a chocolate drink and even plant your own tree. This really is a trip into the world of chocolate.

5. Melbourne, Australia

If you’re looking for a fun and interactive exploration into everything chocolate, visit Melbourne in Australia. The city’s notable chocolate scene includes upscale restaurant-sweet shop combos like Bibelot and chocolatiers like Koko Black, as well as bean-to-bar producers such as Monsieur Truffe, creating its chocolate onsite at the cafe East Elevation. A visit to Phillip Island Chocolate Factory and its chocolate playground, Panny’s Amazing World of Chocolate, offers a waterfall of chocolate consisting of nearly 900 pounds of melted chocolate pouring over the edge of an exhibit every three minutes. Other attractions include a one-tonne block of solid chocolate, a miniature village of chocolate complete with working trains and a chocolate version of Michelangelo’s David statue. 1. What is jetlag and why do we get it?

Jetlag occurs when flying east or west across three or more time zones, and is a disruption of the body’s circadian rhythm frequently causing symptoms such as sleep disruption, daytime drowsiness, impaired mental or physical performance, general malaise, and gastrointestinal issues. Jet lag can persist from just a few days to a few weeks, although it is usually worse when travelling east and when a greater number of time zones are crossed, confusing your body’s internal clock.

2. How to get rid of jetlag

Your body will eventually adjust to the time zone of your new destination, however in order to be able to make the most of your trip, it is helpful to do everything you can to reduce your jetlag symptoms. For example, managing your sleeping schedule so that you sleep when it’s most appropriate to your new destination, staying hydrated, increasing your light exposure by going outside in the sunshine/daylight as much as possible, ensuring you have a comfortable sleeping space, and if necessary (carefully) using caffeine, melatonin or medications to minimise the symptoms. These are all tricks which can help you reduce your jetlag or minimise the effect it has on you, but in recent years several studies have highlighted the importance of one very simple way – exercise.

Science has clearly shown that regular exercise dramatically increases the speed at which our bodies adjust to a new time zone. So, next time jet lag is getting to you after your flight, choose a time that suits you each day, and get exercising!

3. The importance of exercise

Science has shown that regular exercise can be a healthy and relatively easy way to get rid of jetlag. A study done in 2012 by researchers at the University of Kentucky, USA, looked at how exercise can be a time cue (or ‘zeitgeber’) for your body, letting you know what time it is and synchronising your internal clock. The study used mice who were made to exercise at a specific time for two hours every day, and after four weeks the scientists found that this was effective in realigning their body clocks, or circadian rhythms, regardless of it being light or dark.

A similar study published by researchers in Japan in 2008 showed that mice who exercised at the same time each day were able to adjust to an eight-hour time zone difference more quickly. This was then tested on humans by the same researchers in 2010 and again showed that scheduled exercise helped them adjust quicker. A 1987 experiment at the University of Toronto using hamsters also gave similar results.

4. What science tells us

Although the specifics are yet to be proven (for example what time of day is best to exercise, or if this is different depending on whether someone has flown east or west), science has clearly shown that regular exercise dramatically increases the speed at which our bodies adjust to a new time zone. So, next time jet lag is getting to you after your flight, choose a time that suits you each day, and get exercising! Whether it’s a short run, a yoga or fitness session, a swim in a pool, find something that suits you and fit it into your schedule. Follow your chosen routine each day, and let science get to work. This way you can give your body as much help as possible in adapting to your new timezone, giving you the opportunity to get back to your best and ready to enjoy your travels to the fullest!
