The listing was created by Which? Travel researchers on 18 June and presented 10 Downing Street as a “1 bedroom apartment in the heart of London”. It used the exact address of the UK prime minister’s official residence and a photograph of its recognisable black front door. The property description claimed it was in a “prime city-centre location” and just a four-minute walk to the Houses of Parliament.

The researchers deliberately set the property so that guests had to request a stay rather than being able to book automatically. They then briefly opened the booking window for around 20 minutes so a Which? representative could make a test reservation.

During that short period, 14 people reportedly contacted the listing asking whether they could stay at the property. The Which? researcher’s booking for a week-long stay was accepted, and Booking.com processed a payment. According to Which?, the money had still not been refunded more than six weeks after the listing was created.

The experiment also tested the platform’s review and messaging systems. On 11 August, Which? added a fake 10/10 review describing the supposed stay as “exceptional” and referring to “hanging out with Larry the cat”, the cat associated with 10 Downing Street. Although Booking.com indicated that the review would be checked by moderators, Which? said it appeared almost immediately. 

Researchers also used Booking.com’s internal messaging system to send an external link asking the supposed guest to enter credit card details to confirm the booking. Which? said the link was not blocked, despite Booking.com having told the watchdog that it could restrict URLs in messages when fraudulent activity was suspected. 

The fake listing remained online until 27 August, around six weeks after it was created. Which? said the investigation had uncovered “systemic security failures” and called on Ofcom to investigate Booking.com’s compliance with its obligations under the Online Safety Act. 

According to Which?, under Booking.com’s policies, hosts are not required to provide photo ID or proof of ownership until three months after a listing goes live.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “If Booking.com’s so-called sophisticated AI systems can’t spot that 10 Downing Street is not a holiday rental, then it’s no wonder scammers can exploit the platform so easily.” He added that the consequences for holidaymakers could be serious, with travellers potentially losing thousands of pounds to fake listings and phishing links.

“Booking.com’s checks are clearly unfit for purpose, and the Prime Minister must now urge Ofcom to use the Online Safety Act to crack down on irresponsible online platforms that leave consumers wide open to fraud,” Boland added.

Booking.com disputed the significance of the test, saying it was “not a true reflection of the experience of millions of listings on our platform. The property added by Which? was not visible to customers or ‘live’ for the time period referenced.” The company said it uses verification measures and artificial intelligence to detect and remove most fraudulent listings within 24 hours, but argued that some automatic controls were not triggered because the fake property was not continuously open and bookable.

Ofcom said platforms have existing legal duties to swiftly remove illegal user-generated content once they become aware of it, adding that “Booking.com is not in scope of future rules that will apply to paid-for fraudulent advertising, and any change to that would be a matter for Government.”

The “significant flash flooding” struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas on Saturday, 29 August, according to the National Park Service (NPS). Two people were confirmed dead, while more than 80 people were evacuated from the affected areas. At least one person remained unaccounted for in the days following the disaster, according to CBS News.

The flooding caused widespread damage to infrastructure in the inner canyon, including nearly every footbridge spanning Bright Angel Creek. More than 60 people were evacuated by helicopter from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail as floodwaters swept through the area.

One of the most significant consequences has been damage to the Transcanyon Waterline, the system that supplies water from the canyon for use throughout the park. The waterline is currently not operational, leaving the Grand Canyon with limited water reserves and forcing officials to introduce Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim.

Under the restrictions, all overnight guest accommodation operated by park concessionaires has been closed for the foreseeable future. This includes El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Phantom Ranch, Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village RV Park. Hotels located outside the park in Tusayan are not affected by the restrictions.

“These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of water resources,” the NPS wrote in a statement. “We are asking residents and visitors to help conserve water by limiting showers to five minutes or less, turning off faucets while shaving or brushing teeth, flushing toilets selectively, washing laundry with full loads, and reporting leaks to the appropriate offices.”

Camping is also limited. Only dry camping is permitted on the South Rim, with campground water spigots turned off, although bathroom faucets remain operational. Fires are prohibited in the South Rim and inner canyon areas, including wood-burning and charcoal fires.

The park itself remains open for day use, with food and beverage services, the Grand Canyon Clinic and the Post Office continuing to operate, although some services may have reduced hours. 

The Colorado River has also been closed to river traffic until further notice because of metal structures and debris entering the river. Visitors with upcoming river trips have been advised to contact their commercial outfitter or the NPS River Permits office for information specific to their trip.

The flooding occurred during the region’s monsoon season, when intense rainfall can rapidly funnel through the Grand Canyon’s steep, rocky terrain. The Guardian reported that the storm also affected areas scarred by the 2025 Dragon Bravo wildfire, where reduced vegetation can increase runoff. Researchers cited by the newspaper also pointed to drought, warming temperatures and a potentially stronger El Niño as factors that may have contributed to the extreme rainfall.

With further thunderstorms and heavy rainfall possible, the NPS has warned that additional flash flooding, debris flows, rockfall and rapidly changing trail and river conditions could occur.

The final part of the journey takes guests to Egypt, where Abercrombie & Kent will charter its Nile Seray river vessel. The changes affect ferry services operated by Stena Line and Irish Ferries and are being introduced to ensure the “accuracy and integrity of passenger data before boarding”, according to the ferry companies and the UK Border Force.

At present, passengers travelling between Great Britain and Ireland are not always required to show a passport and can in some cases use other forms of photo identification. That will change on several routes from the end of September.

Stena Line operates services between Holyhead and Dublin and between Fishguard and Rosslare. From 28 September, passengers on these crossings will be required to present a passport before boarding. The company said customers with existing bookings are being contacted by its customer service team to help them prepare for the change.

Irish Ferries is also introducing a passport requirement on all of its routes between the Republic of Ireland and Britain. The company says that, from 28 September, every passenger must present a valid passport or Irish passport card before boarding its Dublin–Holyhead and Rosslare–Pembroke services, in both directions.

Driving licences, national identity cards and other forms of photo identification will no longer be accepted on these Irish Ferries routes once the new rules take effect. The requirement applies to Irish and British citizens as well as other nationalities.

The new ferry rules come despite the fact that Irish and British citizens are not legally required to carry a passport when travelling between the two countries under the Common Travel Area. The arrangement has been in place for more than a century and covers the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Passengers who are not British or Irish citizens may also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Britain. Irish Ferries says an ETA may be required for visitors travelling to Britain for up to six months, including for tourism, visiting family, certain business trips or transit. Travellers who require an ETA but do not have one may not be allowed to board.

Irish Ferries advises passengers to apply for an ETA before travelling and to use the same passport for their ETA application and their ferry journey.

The change follows similar requirements already introduced for air travel. In February, Aer Lingus joined Ryanair in requiring passengers travelling between Great Britain and Ireland to carry passports.

Passengers planning a ferry journey after 28 September are therefore being advised to check their travel documents before heading to the port.

Santa Claus will also have a new meeting location this year. From 13 November through 24 December, he will greet guests at Mickey’s Toontown Trolley Barn near Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin at Disneyland Park. He will also appear at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail at Disney California Adventure.

Several of Disneyland’s most recognisable holiday traditions will return. “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” will once again travel along Main Street, U.S.A., featuring Disney characters, toy soldiers, dancing reindeer and gingerbread cookies. The “Believe…In Holiday Magic” fireworks spectacular will also return, with snowfall and fireworks adding to the nighttime experience.

The park’s seasonal attraction makeovers will include “Haunted Mansion Holiday” and “it’s a small world” Holiday. Cars Land at Disney California Adventure will again feature Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree, while Sleeping Beauty Castle will become Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle, illuminated by more than 80,000 lights each evening.

“World of Color – Season of Light” will return from 13 November at Disney California Adventure. The resort will also bring back Disney Festival of Holidays, with seasonal food, music and cultural performances like “Mirabel’s Gifts of the Season” at Paradise Gardens Park, which will bring Mirabel and her friends to life with stories and songs from Disney Animation’s “Encanto”.

On select evenings from 13 November through 6 January, guests at Disney California Adventure can also enjoy “A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland & Miguel!”, featuring Miguel from Disney and Pixar’s “Coco”. Disney ¡Viva Navidad! will also return to celebrate the holidays with live music, specialty dishes and character appearances inspired by Latin American traditions, while the Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party will feature The Three Caballeros alongside Mexican folklórico dancers, mariachis and Brazilian samba dancers. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and The Three Caballeros will also appear in festive attire at Paradise Gardens Park throughout the celebration.

Holiday celebrations will extend beyond the theme parks. Downtown Disney District will feature seasonal decorations, food, entertainment and nightly simulated snowfall, while Chip and Dale’s Ornament Trail will return from 11 November through 6 January.

The 2026 season will also bring new festive merchandise, including the Mickey Mouse and Family Christmas Collection and Disney Vintage Holiday Collection, which feature festive apparel, accessories, and home decor. The festive offerings will include the Mickey Train Light-Up popcorn bucket and Holiday Stitch Christmas Tree sipper, alongside seasonal food specials such as the Cool Mint and Chocolate Cookie Mickey Elf Shake at Schmoozies! and the sweet-tart Merry Cranberry Crispy Chicken Sandwich at Galactic Grill.

Christmas is definitely coming to town at Disney, as the park goes all in on the festive spirit with new visual touches, including fresh looks for Mickey and friends, alongside the return of many of its most recognisable holiday traditions.

A total of 81,158,297 passengers boarded or disembarked at UK airports between April and June, according to new figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The figure was more than 120,000 higher than the 81,035,648 recorded during the same period in 2025, making it the busiest second quarter on record.

The increase was largely driven by low-cost airlines and stronger demand for short-haul European travel. Ryanair and Jet2 both recorded 9% year-on-year growth in passenger numbers during the quarter, while 2.25 million more passengers travelled with easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 combined compared with the second quarter of 2025.

More than one million additional passengers travelled to Western Europe during the period, with Dublin, Palma de Mallorca, Amsterdam, Alicante and Malaga emerging as the five most popular destinations. Passenger numbers to Madrid rose by 15%, while Barcelona saw an 11% increase compared with the previous year.

Asia also recorded growth, particularly China, where passenger numbers increased by 11%, Pakistan, which saw a 307% rise, and India, where numbers increased by 5%.

The record came despite the impact of the conflict in the Middle East, which affected travel to the region during the quarter. The UK Foreign Office advised against non-essential travel to the region until June 18, while passenger numbers travelling to Dubai were around half the level recorded a year earlier. Middle Eastern airlines also experienced significant reductions in passenger numbers.

“We acted quickly to support airlines and airports against the backdrop of conflict in the Middle East, including giving airlines greater flexibility to lock in flight schedules early, helping to keep last-minute disruption to a minimum, with fewer than 1% of flights cancelled at short notice between May and July,” noted Keir Mather, Aviation, Maritime and Freight Minister.

The disruption followed the outbreak of war in Iran in early March, raising concerns about the impact of air strikes, restrictions affecting regional airspace and fuel shortages on international aviation. However, the overall UK passenger figures remained resilient.

“Demand for flying remains high, as passengers adjust their travel plans around global events,” said Ross Lydall, spokesperson for the CAA. “These results highlight the sector’s resilience and hard work and keep it on course for another record-breaking year.”

Airports also recorded strong growth outside the largest hubs. Cardiff passenger numbers increased by 16% year on year during the quarter, while Newcastle and Inverness each recorded an 8% rise.

The CAA highlighted that the figures demonstrate continued strong demand for air travel, despite the geopolitical disruption affecting some international routes.

The survey considered factors including the quality and affordability of nightlife, sense of community, and whether cities feel exciting, lively, diverse, welcoming and safe after dark.

Bangkok climbed from 13^th place in 2025 to claim the top spot this year. Time Out highlighted the Thai capital’s broad range of nightlife, spanning street-side bars, rooftop venues, large clubs, LGBTQ+ nightlife, neighbourhood cocktail spots and late-night food.

Bangkok’s nightlife stands out for the way it spills beyond bars and clubs onto the streets, particularly around Chinatown’s Soi Nana, with cocktail bars like G.O.D, Tep Bar, Ba Hao, and Bar Temp. 

The city also offers a wide range of dance clubs with major DJ sets and events hosted by local collectives, while venues such as Sing Sing Theater, a red-lanterned cabaret mega-club featured in The White Lotus season three, add to its distinctive after-dark scene.

The city also performed strongly among local residents. 73% of Bangkok respondents described the city’s nightlife as either “good” or “amazing”, while the same percentage said it was easy to feel connected and find a sense of community. Time Out’s expert panel gave Bangkok an approval score of 95%.

Berlin followed in second place globally, making it the highest-ranked European destination. The German capital received a 78% approval rating for its nightlife from local residents, while all members (100%) of Time Out’s expert panel backed its after-dark scene.

Time Out noted that Berlin’s nightlife is facing challenges from rising rents and redevelopment, with the city’s legendary club culture undergoing a period of change, what critics call “Clubsterben: the slow death of the city’s legendary clubs”. 

At the same time, Germany is seeking to reclassify clubs as cultural institutions, while Berlin’s techno culture was recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2024.

New York City ranked third, followed by Melbourne and São Paulo. The remainder of the global top 10 was made up of Medellín, Johannesburg, Brighton, Beijing and Amsterdam.

Europe had a relatively limited presence near the top of the ranking, with only three European cities making the top 10.

Brighton recorded the highest community score in the ranking, with 84% of residents saying it is easy to meet people and feel part of the city’s community. Amsterdam, meanwhile, was recognised for its nightlife both in the city centre and beyond. Time Out noted that “whether you’re staying in Noord, Oost, De Pijp or Jordaan, chances are you’ll find brilliant bars and late-night venues within walking distance”, with venues including Garage Noord, Pllek, Loop 51 and Door 74 among the city’s highlights.

The ranking reflects changing nightlife habits, with street parties and rooftop raves growing while people increasingly explore entire nightlife districts rather than concentrating on a small number of major venues.

The Doha-based carrier said more than half of its Boeing 787 fleet is now equipped with Starlink, with the rollout across the aircraft type expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The milestone also marks the completion of the Starlink installation programme across Qatar Airways’ Boeing 787-8 fleet, which was fitted in seven months.

Qatar Airways began offering Starlink connectivity in October 2024, when it launched the first Starlink-equipped Boeing 777 flight between Doha and London. At the time, the airline said it would roll out the technology across its wider fleet, with the service offered free of charge.

Since then, Starlink has been introduced across the airline’s Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets, as well as its Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Qatar Airways now operates what it describes as the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 fleets.

The airline said more than 23 million passengers have connected to Starlink on Qatar Airways flights since the service was introduced. The technology has been used across more than 86,000 flights, with up to 323 Starlink-equipped flights operating each day. The airline’s Starlink installation programme has now passed 83 per cent completion.

Starlink provides Wi-Fi speeds of up to 500 Mbps, allowing passengers to browse the internet, work, stream content and stay connected while flying. Qatar Airways offers complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi throughout the journey through Privilege Club membership authentication or enrolment, although gate-to-gate connectivity can be unavailable at certain airports because of local regulatory requirements.

Qatar Airways is expected to have around 175 aircraft equipped with Starlink once the Boeing 787-9 rollout is completed by the end of 2026. However, the airline has yet to confirm whether its remaining widebody Airbus A330 and A380 aircraft will receive the technology.

The latest development marks another step in Qatar Airways’ expanding Starlink rollout. The addition of the Boeing 787-9 extends the satellite connectivity service to another long-haul aircraft type, as the airline works towards completing the Starlink installation across its Boeing 787 fleet by the end of 2026.

The project was unveiled during Monterey Car Week earlier this month and includes two cars alongside custom luggage, clothing and travel equipment.

The collaboration began with Singer requesting Louis Vuitton’s Swiss watchmaking workshop to create a mechanical dashboard clock. Inspired by the Louis Vuitton Tambour watch, the removable timepiece can also be used as a desk clock. The project subsequently expanded to encompass the cars’ dashboards, gauges, interiors and extensive travel collections.

“This unique and remarkable adventure began with a request for a dashboard clock for a car reimagined by Singer. In addition to the design and production of this clock by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton workshops in Switzerland, it quickly became apparent to us that this collaboration with Singer could extend to the personalisation of every functional element of the vehicle, enhancing them through our expertise in leather craftsmanship and watchmaking,” shared Jean Arnault, Louis Vuitton Watch Director.

The first Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer – Classic is finished in saffron with cobalt-blue accents and yellow stitching. The colour combination references Louis Vuitton’s packaging and Singer’s early commissions, while natural leather covers much of the interior. Diamond embossing evokes the quilted interiors of Louis Vuitton trunks, and hand-cut Monogram flowers are incorporated into the seat ventilation.

The car is based on a Type 964 coupé chassis and features lightweight carbon-fibre bodywork, a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, a six-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and carbon-ceramic brakes.

A specially designed roof rack adds a practical travel element, accommodating a fitted Louis Vuitton trunk, skis or a surfboard. The surfboard itself is part of the bespoke collection, alongside luggage designed specifically for the car’s storage compartments. The accompanying travel wardrobe includes a leather racing jacket, driving shoes, gloves and a helmet.

The collaboration extends to a range of custom accessories, including a six-key folder featuring a Louis Vuitton x Singer stamp and a cloche key holder in the fashion house’s signature blue that can be attached to a bag or worn around the neck. A document pochette inspired by a 1950s business sleeve includes a contrasting blue interior and zipped pen compartment, while a helmet bag holds the custom helmet and features hardware matched to the car’s fuel cap. The luggage collection also includes a Bisten case with a blue handle and name tag, a Keepall designed to carry a week’s wardrobe, and two front-trunk bags shaped to fit neatly into the car’s nose.

The second vehicle, the Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer – Classic Turbo, takes a different approach. Developed with Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of women’s collections, the white cabriolet combines natural leather, gold-toned details and extensive woodwork inspired by classic motorboats. Its rear luggage compartment features teak-style decking, while the mechanical clock is positioned in the centre console.

Ghesquière said: “Automotive design is a passion that has always lived within me. My collaboration with Singer has been a chance to reconnect with this fascinating world – a magnificent opportunity to explore truly exceptional automobiles.”

The Classic Turbo is based on a Type 964 cabriolet chassis and has a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with air-to-water intercooling, a six-speed manual transmission, selectable drive modes, rear-wheel drive and carbon-ceramic brakes.

“Projects of this scale and exclusivity allow for a level of attention to detail that is unusual in the automotive world. Every transition between materials, every metallic reflection, every knurled surface, every mechanical interaction and every graphic element has been meticulously considered, often at an almost microscopic level,” explains Octave Chany, Project Lead Designer at Singer.

Chany added that the team wanted to preserve the cars’ functionality alongside their luxury detailing, describing it as important to remain faithful to “the idea of a functional and useful vehicle” while maintaining Singer’s handling and technical integrity.

Both cars, along with their bespoke accessories and luggage collections, are now available for sale, with prices available on request.

The name change was announced by the government and officially took effect in August 2026. The move replaces the internationally recognised name “Nauru” with “Naoero”, a name that reflects how the country is known in the local language.

“This proposed change seeks to more faithfully honour our nation’s heritage, our language, and our identity,” President David Adeang had said when he proposed the move to parliament in January.

The decision is part of a wider effort by Nauru’s government to promote the use of the Nauruan language and strengthen national identity. Officials said the traditional name better represents the island and its people after decades in which foreign administrations influenced how the country was named and represented internationally.

Located in the central Pacific Ocean northeast of Australia, Naoero is the world’s third-smallest country by land area, covering just 21 square kilometres, and has a population of around 12,000 people. The island gained independence from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom in 1968 after decades of German, British and Australian administration.

The country’s economy was once among the wealthiest in the Pacific due to extensive phosphate mining. However, decades of extraction left much of the island environmentally degraded, and phosphate reserves have largely been depleted. In recent years, the country has relied on a combination of foreign aid, fishing licence revenues and its controversial role hosting Australia’s offshore immigration processing centre.
