The architects behind the redesign made a deliberate choice to keep as much of the original prison intact as possible. From the small barred windows and austere lines to the museum on the grounds, it is genuinely hard to forget where you are.

It starts at the entrance, where the old guard posts still stand, overlooking five cellblocks fanning out from the central core like spokes. The long corridors that once held rows of prisoners’ cells are now hotel hallways.

Rooms are, naturally, former cells, but combined: nine, ten or eleven cells joined into a single suite. While knocking down the walls between them may have provided the space needed for a luxury hotel room, it has not entirely erased the building’s original purpose. The rooms remain long and narrow, and the corridors are unmistakably institutional.

Even guests who liked the hotel experienced that psychological dissonance. One described a “sense of tension” that made him “sit up straight” from the moment the heavy entrance gate opened, with traces of the former cells remaining in everything from the concrete walls to the position of the windows and height of the ceilings.

Another guest felt that rather than simply pursuing luxury, the hotel placed value on “the experience of history itself”. The century-old bricks, reportedly made and laid by inmates themselves, remain intact, allowing guests to “feel the weight of history so closely”.

The architects and designers behind the transformation wanted the building to retain its sombre historical character. Japan Times journalist Owen Ziegler described its atmosphere as “sterile” and “morose”, with 4.88-square-metre single cells containing little more than a washbasin and a small window.

In that spirit, there is no pool, fitness centre or meeting rooms and no “Kids’ Club”. The rooms do not have televisions either. One guest described it as a place “for adults to quietly savour the space and its history” and “not really suitable for children”.

One of the five wings has been preserved in its former state and transformed into a museum which is open to the public during the day. It is hard not to draw comparisons between a stay here and the lives of those who slept in the same building before. While hotel staff now make the beds, inmates were given precise instructions on how to fold their futons when not in use. The contrast extends to mealtimes: the museum displays prison meals, while the hotel’s own menu has received great praise online.

Manga artist Kazuichi Hanawa, who was imprisoned in Nara in the 1990s, chronicled his experience in Doing Time, which is now displayed in the museum’s final section devoted to artworks by inmates.

The luxury comes at a price. One guest described it as “by far the most expensive hotel” she had ever stayed in, but also “by far the most memorable”. Suites range in price from $350 for a nine-cell room to $610 for the 11-cell Deluxe, not including breakfast.

A placard in the museum perhaps best sums up the experience: “It may be us, on the outside, who have lost sight of what is truly irreplaceable and important in everyday life.”

Ras Al Khaimah was selected as the location for the ambitious project, offering a different setting from the busy urban environment of Dubai. The emirate has been investing heavily in tourism and luxury accommodation, while promoting its beaches, mountains and outdoor experiences. Located around 80 kilometres north of Dubai International Airport, Wynn Al Marjan Island is expected to attract international visitors looking for a combination of relaxation and entertainment. The resort could help position Ras Al Khaimah as one of the Gulf region’s emerging luxury tourism destinations.

Construction of the resort is currently entering its final stages, although the project has faced some delays. Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings previously announced a “modest delay” due to logistical and shipping challenges linked to regional conflicts and wider supply chain disruptions. The company estimated that these issues increased the cost of the project by around $600 million (€520 million). Despite these challenges, work on the resort is progressing, with the 70-storey tower reaching its highest structural point and interior works continuing across the property.

Wynn Al Marjan Island is designed as an integrated resort, meaning that visitors will find much more than a casino on the site. The development will include more than 1,500 rooms, suites and residences, offering different levels of accommodation. The resort will feature 22 restaurants, bars and lounges, bringing together international concepts and new dining experiences created specifically for Ras Al Khaimah. Among the announced venues are Delilah, a well-known entertainment dining concept from Las Vegas, and a new steakhouse by French chef Alain Ducasse.

Entertainment will also play an important role in attracting visitors to the resort. Wynn Al Marjan Island will include a theatre with around 900 seats, immersive experiences and live performances. The resort will also feature a 15,000-square-metre luxury retail promenade with international brands. These facilities reflect a broader trend in global tourism, where travellers increasingly look for destinations that combine accommodation, entertainment, shopping and unique experiences in one location.

The resort will also focus on leisure and relaxation, with facilities designed for both short stays and longer holidays. Guests will have access to a 420-metre private white sand beach, 12 swimming pools, a luxury spa and a beach club. A marina will allow the resort to welcome superyachts from around the world, while events facilities will provide space for conferences, celebrations and other large gatherings. The combination of these amenities is aimed at attracting different types of travellers, from luxury holidaymakers to business visitors.

The opening of Wynn Al Marjan Island comes as the UAE continues to expand its tourism offer beyond traditional attractions. Dubai has built a global reputation around shopping, architecture and luxury experiences, while Ras Al Khaimah is developing its own identity based on nature, beaches and high-end resorts. The new project adds another element to the emirate’s tourism strategy by introducing a large-scale entertainment destination. Future transport improvements, including a new bridge connection and plans for possible flying taxi services between Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai, could further improve accessibility for international visitors.

The opening represents the first full season for the property under the Banyan Tree brand after it joined the group’s portfolio. The resort is the result of a seven-year restoration project that preserved the fortress’s historic character while introducing contemporary luxury. Originally constructed in the 1850s as Fort Mamula, the structure served as a coastal defence fortification. Throughout the restoration, original architectural elements, including the fortress’s distinctive arches, were retained and reinterpreted across the property, while the interiors incorporate natural stone, aged brass, solid oak and craftsmanship inspired by local pottery and joinery traditions.

According to Banyan Group, the property now features the brand’s award-winning Banyan Tree Spa alongside destination-led dining concepts, wellness experiences, cultural programming and nature-based activities.

Guests arrive by private boat across Boka Bay or by helicopter from Dubrovnik or Tivat. The island sanctuary offers three outdoor pools, a private beach, a spa located within the historic fortress tower and several dining venues highlighting local ingredients and Mediterranean flavours.

The culinary offering includes Parasol, serving seafood-focused dishes beside the pools, Kamena Restaurant overlooking the Adriatic with menus centred on locally harvested ingredients, and Celeste, which draws inspiration from coastal cooking traditions spanning Italy, the Caribbean and the Levant. Evenings are centred around Pinea Bar, where guests can enjoy handcrafted cocktails and vinyl music sessions.

Cultural experiences also form a key part of the resort’s identity. Banyan Group said the property has introduced an Artists-in-Residence programme featuring local and regional creatives, alongside workshops, exhibitions, maker sessions, live music, opera evenings and the Operosa Music Festival.

The resort is also available for exclusive island buyouts for weddings, retreats and private events across venues that include the restored fortress, open-air terraces, gardens, spa facilities and beachfront spaces.

The tourist office in Levi, a popular Nordic skiing destination and viewing point for the Northern Lights, has hidden a gold bar worth €20,000 somewhere among the area’s local trails, service venues, and landmarks.

Coinciding with the season of the midnight sun in Lapland, from 18 June 2026 until 22 August (or until the gold bar is found), a trail of clues will be gradually revealed by the destination manager as part of a “Midnight Sun Hunt,” allowing guests in the region to hunt the treasure. And if they find it, no matter how many clues they solved in order to do so, it’s theirs.

While not everyone can come away from their Lapland adventure with their very own gold bar, the idea is that everyone who visits the region will be a winner, having discovered some sort of gold of their own. ”Levi is known above all for its winter, but the northern summer is still undiscovered by many,” Satu Pesonen, the CEO of Visit Levi, said. “We want to give travellers a new reason to visit Levi when the sun never sets, and the fell landscape reveals a completely different side of itself.”

The goldrush concept is a joint venture by Visit Levi, Agnico Eagle Mining Company, and Levi Ski Resort. Guests can choose between three swimming pools, including one for families, one for adults, and a lap pool located at the spa. The wellness area includes a traditional hammam, hydrotherapy facilities, and treatment rooms inspired by natural elements such as salt and water. Dining is spread across several restaurants, including plant-forward dishes at Sea Green, Levantine cuisine at Al Forn, and Italian-inspired meals at Spiaggia.

The destination also places strong emphasis on activities and exploration. Guests staying at the resort can now take part in scuba diving excursions in the Red Sea, which is known for its coral reefs and rich marine life. Other options include catamaran sailing, water sports, and guided desert adventures such as electric quad biking. Private beach dinners are also available, offering a more intimate experience by the sea.

Sustainability is a key part of the resort’s concept and operations. The property is powered entirely by renewable energy and uses systems designed to reduce water and waste impact. This approach is part of the broader regenerative tourism model used by Red Sea Global. The goal is not only to reduce environmental harm but also to support long-term ecosystem protection in the region. This aligns with wider national tourism strategies linked to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

Accessibility to the destination has also been expanded to support growing demand. Travellers can reach Red Sea International Airport with direct flights from cities such as Milan, Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha, and Dubai. The airport is located around a 25-minute drive from Shura Island, making access relatively smooth for an island destination. The wider Red Sea area currently has multiple hotels already open, with additional resorts planned to launch in the coming months.

Amongst those who frequently visited Cal Neva were Dean Martin, John F. Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe. Allegedly, Monroe even spent the last few weeks of her life at the resort.

At that time, one of the unique features of the resort was its showroom, engineered in such a way that performers were able to see every face in the audience. Moreover, a network of private tunnels allowed guests to move throughout the resort while staying discreet.

A lot has changed for Cal Neva since the 1960s, and in 2013, the hotel closed down for a massive renovation. However, the resort never reopened, and instead, it changed hands a few times. In April 2023, a real estate firm then called McWhinney and now known as Realberry, purchased the resort for approximately $52 million.

At the beginning of April 2026, Realberry announced it had been able to secur $298 million in order to restore the Cal Neva Resort. Realberry and Proper Hospitality will join forces for the venture and should open the Lake Tahoe Proper Resort and Casino by the end of 2027. 

“Cal Neva is one of the most storied hospitality properties in the West, and we feel a deep responsibility to get the execution right with Lake Tahoe Proper. Our focus has been on rigorous restoration, and this financing milestone allows us to continue to thoughtfully reestablish this asset as a premier hospitality destination in Lake Tahoe, balancing preservation and long-term stewardship,” Chad McWhinney, CEO of Realberry, stated in a press release.

Opening scheduled for 2027

The former Cal Neva Resort will thus be celebrating its 101^st anniversary in style with an entire makeover. The project includes 197 guest rooms, suites, and private villas, as well as a selection of restaurants and bars. The iconic Circle Bar will be at the heart of the project, while the on-site event spaces and 225-seat theatre and casino will get a revamp. Two outdoor pool spaces and a spa will complete the resort.

“Cal Neva is an American icon, and we wanted to bring it back the right way. What we’re building is rooted in Tahoe, with a focus on design, wellness, and being in nature. At the same time, we’re bringing music and culture back to the stage Frank Sinatra once played. It’s a place to reset, but also to be part of something,” Brad Korzen, co-founder and CEO of Proper Hospitality, told PEOPLE in a statement.

The hotel blends modern design with local influences, incorporating wooden furnishings, patterned cement tiles and decorative elements inspired by the island’s architecture and artistic heritage.

The resort features a curated art collection that includes works by artist Raya Salman and photographer Joe Wuerfel, whose images capture the soul of Cape Verde. The hotel also presents select pieces by Cape Verdean artists, reinforcing a strong connection to local creative expression.

The property offers a mix of leisure and business facilities, including an infinity-edge pool, spa, fitness centre and conference spaces with meeting rooms and event areas. Schulze-Potgieter added that the opening reflects increasing demand for modern and consistent hospitality offerings across emerging destinations. The UK-centric index assesses the best-value ski resorts reachable from the UK, using live pricing data from the 2024–25 and 2025/26 winter seasons. Each resort is ranked based on the combined cost of a one-day lift pass, one-day ski hire, one-night mid-range accommodation, airport transport, and even the price of a beer.

Doyle further explains that the index aims to highlight resorts where “equipment hire, hotels and hospitality offer fantastic value,” particularly for those willing to look beyond traditional Alpine favourites.

The top three may come as a surprise to travellers who are less familiar with Eastern European or Balkan ski destinations. Bulgaria dominates the ranking, taking first and third place, with Poland in second place.

Although Eastern Europe leads on prices, classic destinations such as Italy, France, and Spain can still be affordable.

Italy remains the “best value for money’ option in Western Europe, with the fourth, sixth, and seventh spots. Set in the mid-range of the Alps, Bardonecchia and Sestriere hosted events during the 2006 Winter Olympics and offer Olympic-grade slopes without the “Olympic” price tag. In the high Alps, they promise atmosphere and an Olympic feel, with slopes that have hosted events.

Spain’s presence in eighth place with La Molina may surprise many, but it is an excellent spot for beginners and intermediates, offering a relaxed, sun-soaked environment.
