But many may still be unfamiliar with the concept of glamping which is, basically, “posh”, or upmarket, camping.

When the sun’s out, as it certainly has been in Belgium so far this summer, the prospect of sleeping out under the stars appears rather more appealing than it might otherwise do.

But one of the country’s best known tourist attractions has now come up with something a bit different again: top-of-the-range glamping in the heart of the Domain of the famous Caves of Han. Here, you can treat yourself to a relaxing break in a truly lovely natural setting, in the heart of the charming village of Han-sur-Lesse.

Set in a 12,000 square metre wooded park, located at the gateway to the Ardennes and on the banks of the river Lesse, the “Cocoon Village”, as it is called, certainly offers a different camping experience.

It gives folk the chance to recharge their batteries in quite idyllic natural surroundings and enjoy a relaxing and comfortable stay in one of their 32 cosy “Cocoon” tents.The spacious tents each contain comfy beds and, after a night under the stars, next day you are treated to a hearty breakfast comprising a tasty array of local products.

The site includes a bar, all toilet and washing facilities (including showers), a play area for the kids, badminton court and, just to complete the experience, everyone gets the chance to do their own BBQ outside your tent.

But, arguably the thing that really sets this place apart is that the package also usually includes visits to the adjacent Caves of Han and sprawling wildlife park, both top Belgian tourist attractions.

Folk travel from far and wide just to experience the caves alone and it’s little wonder.

The cave visit includes “Salle du Dôme”, the largest underground cave in Belgium. The caves are one of Belgium’s most popular tourist attractions with up to 300,000 visitors per year. A led lighting system brings out the natural colours and depth of the caves and dripstones.

The caves there are the only natural attraction in Belgium to have been awarded 3 stars in the famous Michelin Guide. Both the nature park and caves are located at the very heart of the Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark. You are best to allow a full day to see both though half a day is ok if it’s just either the park or caves.

The animal park can be visited on foot, at your own pace, along its footpath or aboard a Safari-car accompanied by a driver-guide. The visit to the Grotto is guided and is done in small groups. The site now additionally offers glamping for those able to stay over for a night or two.

Back at Cocoon Village, just up the road, a pleasant experience awaits after a full day exploring the park and cave.

A 2 night stay is necessary but, even if the weather’s bad, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

2. Eco-Lodge Brejeira, Portugal

]]> In the heart of the Natural Park of Montesinho stands an amazing paradise, Vinhais Biological Park. Here you can find a true Noah’s ark; both domestic and wild animals stroll freely, animals that didn’t have the necessary conditions to survive in their natural habitat. They can be observed along the Park’s three fantastic walking routes, where the natural scenery will dazzle you. Within the park, there are 13 wooden houses and a small area for tents and motorhomes, all in perfect harmony with nature. You can also do Glamping and learn how to live at one with nature.

Travel Tomorrow speaks with Miguel Fernandes, director of the park, who is passionate about this natural place, perfect to escape life’s stresses.

1. Discovering the Vinhais Park

The Vinhais Biological Park covers six acres and was installed by the Municipality of Vinhais in the Prada Forest Vivarium on the Serra da Coroa Forest Perimeter, just 3 km from the center of Vinhais, in the heart of the Montesinho Natural Park. The Park offers an excellent example of Glamping and is definitely worth getting to know, it joins nature with wonderful commodities and creative outdoor activities.

There is a huge range of activities and infrastructures to see within the park. You can visit the Interpretative Center of the Iberian wolf, the Mycological Center where you can meet countless species of mushrooms, or the Interpretative Center for Native Portuguese Breeds, where you will see 55 breeds of Portuguese domestic animals in real size.

Also, Miguel Fernandes, says with pride, “there is a biological pool without any type of chemicals, and in which animals and plants purify the water.” Sustainability seems to be one of the main concerns of the park. One of the major goals is to develop ecotourism, recreation, and leisure for the population, but also to preserve nature and promote biodiversity.

Besides this, the park focuses on the interpretation of the region’s landscape, in natural and cultural components, and also on environmental education. The scenery is wonderful, small wooden houses, pods, of typology t0 and t1, seem to be taken from the Lord of the Rings. They are so charming that it is impossible to resist staying here. They are fully integrated with nature as if you had suddenly travelled to the garden of Eden, and unique because they seem to come out of our imagination.

2. Trails you won’t forget

The Park’s three wonderful trails will delight everyone, and be sure to look out for the enormous diversity of trees, which amazes many visitors. Come with us to discover the trails…

The trails offer you the opportunity to fully enjoy the plentiful nature. The “Visitação” trail is only one kilometer, but along it you can find all kinds of animals, from mirandese cows, donkeys, chickens, deers, wild boars, owls, among many others. These animals came here from the Veterinary Hospital of Vila Real and the Recovery Center of Gaia Biological Park, and cannot be returned to the wild, so the park is their opportunity to live in nature whilst in a controlled environment.

The trail of the Prada dam is a 6 km route that will leave you dazzled and with a profound peace of mind.

The Alto da Ciradelha Trail, although smaller than the previous one, is about 3 km and a half. The stunning observatory en route, located 1000 meters up, is sure to impress with its enchanting panoramic swing.

The shape of the swing might be bizarre, considering it resembles a chorizo, but this is because Vinhais is the Capital of the Fumeiro and has seven different types of sausages with protected geographical denomination. The landscape, I assure, will leave you truly impressed. There are also 140 kilometers of mountain biking routes across 4 different paths with varying degrees of difficulty, so everyone can get involved.

3. Activities: Everything you can enjoy in nature

The Vinhais Biological Park has a huge range of activities for those who visit, which Miguel Fernandes details, “Here you can do everything, from magnificent walks along the trails, bird watching and go to the Equestrian Center where you can ride a horse or a buggy. There is also an adventure park where you can do tree climbing, slide, wall climbing, archery, and paintball.”

He also adds, “there are very interesting activities for children like A Hora da Patinha, where they can feed the animals in the company of the keeper and where they learn, for example, where the eggs come from, because there are children who do not know this.” He also says that “adults have an activity that is similar: to be a keeper for one day, feeding animals and making the necessary management for their well-being. You can also enjoy fantastic guided tours around the park.”

4. What to visit near the Park

Nearby, be sure to visit the Vila of Vinhas, just two and a half kilometers from the Park. There, you can see a permanent exhibition at the Interpretative Center of Bizaro Pig and Fumeiro of Vinhais. Also, be sure to visit the charming village of Moimenta da Beira, bordering Spain, where you can visit the well-known Smuggling Museum.

From the river beaches around, I highlight the Soeira, which has a blue flag and where you can take fantastic baths surrounded by nature. If you’d like to learn more about the crafts of the past visit the Green Park of Arts and Crafts and find out about the making process of bread, wine, and agricultural artefacts. Finally, for those who appreciate sacred art, the village has a museum dedicated to it.

Glamping is undoubtedly a new way of connecting with nature, and in places like this, it seems truly blessed by the Gods.

Even better is the fact that there is an ever-increasing amount of eco-friendly glamping sites nowadays, which means you don’t have to compromise the environment to get your luxury outdoors holiday. Here are a few ideas for some incredible and comfortable stays in the beautiful Welsh countryside.

1. Treberfedd Farm, West Wales

Situated on an idyllic hilltop location with panoramic views, Treberfedd Farm is a working organic farm offering beautiful glamping facilities. A short drive from west Wales’ Cardigan Bay coast, you can explore the sandy beaches, coast path and quality seaside eateries as well as the farm trails and woodlands. The site has two octagonal luxury eco cabins with a completely original design. Both cabins are dug into the hillside and blend into the landscape, making the most of the beautiful views. They are made of natural materials, using organic meadow grass as turf roofs and sheep’s wool as insulation, with welsh timber cladding on the exterior. You can wake up in cosy luxury and watch the sun rising over the mountains of the Aeron valley below. From the king size bed to the comfy chairs, log burner, TV and underfloor heating powered by the farm’s wind turbine and solar panels, the eco cabins offer a luxurious yet sustainable stay. There is even a new Swedish wood fired hot tub!

At Treberfedd Farm you can also choose to stay at Dora, an Edwardian Caravan. Located in a secluded and beautiful organic meadow, you can enjoy the views over green rolling hills. With a full size double bed with duvet, pure wool welsh blankets and a wood burning stove, Dora is perfect for cosy nights. There is a private cooking and dining with an outdoor gas stove under a canvas awning and outside fire pit for long summer evenings, and a fully equipped and heated toilet and shower cabin a short walk away. The caravan is equipped with everything you need for your stay, just sit back, relax and enjoy the views!

2. Penhein Glamping, South Wales

Penhein is a typical Welsh farm set on 450 acres of woodland and grassland which is is run with conservation and ecology in mind. Woodland corridors between the fields protect the flora and fauna that thrive on the farm, and the water comes from natural springs on the land. The glampsite is situated in the middle of three acres of semi-ancient woods and opens onto wildflower meadows with magnificent views of the River Severn and the valley below. Further down is Coombe Wood, a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and home to species of trees dating back many thousands of years, as well as Castroggi Brook, at the foot of the valley, a perfect spot for picnics, paddling and rope-swinging over the stream.

Most special of all is the accommodation at Penhein, which is a small group of alachigh (Persian) tents inspired by those of the nomadic Shahsavan tribe in Northern Iran, and decorated beautifully with exotic colours and patterns of the middle east. Furbished with beautiful kitchen facilities and comfortable beds, as well as a separate toilet attached to the tent, this is a unique glamping experience. A shared kitchen as well as a luxurious shower block is situated in the centre of the small group of tents, and you can even have a candle lit bath! With each tent on its own little woodchip path, there is also a communal tent with a log fire and cosy chairs, and indoor dining area. Managed with consideration for the environment at the centre of everything, Penhein offers a gorgeous, guilt free holiday in a stunning setting.

3. Ceridwen Centre, West Wales

The Ceridwen Centre is an multi-award winning eco-sensitive holiday destination set on a 40 acre organic farm in the Teifi Valley. The centre offers a variety of comfortable unique spaces which are all restored, upcycled or made by their local on site team, and you can choose to stay in a range of accommodations. Whether a cosy yurt, the amazing converted double decker bus, the upcycled static caravan or an eco pod, all options are heated and can be enjoyed year-round. With a beautiful historic location 15 miles from fantastic beaches, the glampsite offers a licensed bar and shop, and even runs regular Friday pizza nights (woodfired sourdough pizza with seasonal and locally sourced toppings) and Saturday burger nights, so you are in for a real treat!

4. Cosy Under Canvas, Welsh Borders

Located on the Welsh/English border near the Brecon Beacons National Park, Cosy Under Canvas offers luxurious and eco-friendly geodomes for your stay. Comfy beds, snug duvets, fluffy sheepskins and cosy rugs fill these intriguing structures, and with eco-friendly compost loos, wood-fired showers and solar lights, the site has a very wholesome feel. The stylish geodesic domes include personal toiletries, real coffee, private fire pits and steamy wood-fired hot tubs so you will really feel on holiday, and thanks to its off-the-grid location, it’s a complete digital detox! No phone signal, no wifi, just switch off, un-wind and re-connect with yourself and the surroundings.

5. West Wales Camping Pods, West Wales

West Wales Camping Pods offers an eco-friendly stay in a beautiful, rural and off the beaten track setting on a working farm. Their lovely camping pods are are made with sustainable timber and insulated with sheep’s wool, creating a snug place to stay whilst being kind to the environment. They have a fully equipped communal kitchen with separate toilet and shower pods, and each pod has lighting, heating and a fridge to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. There is a covered BBQ area so you can cook up a feast in the summer months, and visitors can say hello to the animals on the working farm. All that is needed for a relaxing and responsible holiday!
