A traditional UK seaside pursuit beloved by some holidaymakers but controversial with others is set to come to an end after over a century due to restrictions on beach access for animals.

Donkey and pony rides have long operated on the British coast, taking visitors, old and young, along the sands on the backs of gentle four-legged friends. But authorities at Coney Beach in Porthcawl, South Wales, have now extended a ban on dogs along the seashore to all animals, meaning that the seashore’s donkey rides will become a relic of the past.

Behind every holiday ride is a donkey or mule forced to carry the weight – often in the heat, often without rest, and often when they’re already injured or exhausted.
They don’t choose this. They endure it.
Leave them out of your holiday plans. Don’t ride them.#worlddonkeyday pic.twitter.com/Y6Ni3r4HUR
— PETA UK (@PETAUK) May 8, 2026

Summertime rules applying to dogs between 1 May and 30 September will, from now on, cover all creatures, effectively excluding the possibility of granting a licence for seasonal donkey or pony riding at Coney Beach, Bridgend Council said.

The move comes amid major regeneration plans for the Welsh seafront that include 1,100 new homes and an overhaul of the public space, as well as a new hotel development and a promenade. The town’s Coney Beach Amusement Park, which opened in 1918, closed its gates for the last time in October 2025 as part of the changes afoot in the area.

Critics of seaside donkey rides have argued for years that the practice is outdated and is comparable to circuses in violating animal welfare and exploiting creatures by making them work long hours on hot and crowded beaches. The sight of donkeys and ponies being ridden in this way is upsetting to visitors and does not project a positive image of the resorts that host them, they say.

But others defend the activity, claiming that visitors expect such facilities and enjoy the old-fashioned pleasures and distinct character they provide. David Morgan, 74, from Newton, near Porthcawl, told the BBC the decision risked “ripping the heart” out of the community, and stakeholder Jay Bateman, whose family have run a donkey-riding business at Coney Beach for decades, said his livelihood was being taken away.

Meanwhile, the council has insisted it recognises “the importance of traditional seaside attractions” and intends to manage the area in alignment with “the final masterplan proposals and long-term ambitions for the area.”

The authority is currently “reviewing the expressions of interest that we have received for providing all-new seasonal activities at Coney Beach,” it said, adding that “residents and visitors should look out for some exciting announcements about a wide range of new activities and stalls in the near future.”

Coney Beach is not the only UK beachfront to be losing what some say are iconic attractions. Dreamland Margate, an amusement park on the Kent coast, announced earlier in 2026 that its historic, grade II-listed Scenic Railway was set to close permanently. Nonetheless, elsewhere, Margate’s seaside character is being reinstated with the advent of development plans for the Nayland Rock Hotel, a now-derelict establishment that once welcomed stars like Charlie Chaplin and Mick Jagger, set to be turned into apartments, short-term rentals, and a restaurant.

Walkers in Wales will have two more trails to choose from in spring 2026, with the opening of a new multi-day valley route and a heritage adventure in twinned coastal towns, adding over 134km of stunning Welsh sea and landscapes.

The Teifi Valley Trail presents a 134-km challenge, starting in the so-called “green desert of Wales” among the Cambrian Mountains at the Teifi Pools, source of the River Teifi. It explores the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve and its bogs, abbeys, mines, and waterfalls, before arriving at the dunes and marshes of Poppit Sands beach.

The hike can be completed as an eight-day epic or broken into sections. Part one is a 50-km, three-day walk from Pontrhydfendigaid village, past 12-century monastery ruins, towards Lampeter. Part two is a shorter 35-km stretch taking in market towns and (beware!) a floodplain, while part three entails 48 km and treats the eyeballs to 14th-century vestiges and independent shops at Newcastle Emlyn, as well as a wool museum in Dre-fach Felindre, and breathtaking scenery of the Teifi River Gorge.

The Teifi Valley Trail website said the “truly rural” route embraces “nature reserves, woodlands, floodplains and marshes, and finally the estuarine panoramas towards the coast,” adding that the walk traverses “a profoundly historic part of Wales, and the countryside through which the trail passes still bears witness equally to the ancient and to the relatively recent industrial past.”

For a more coastal adventure, the second new walk hitting Welsh maps in 2026 launched in February. The Fishguard and Goodwick Heritage Trail is a free self-guided route, celebrating 2,000 years of history. It brings together 46 sites, from iron age and ancient Celtic monuments, to modern rugby and wrestling legends, commemorations for 18th-century pirate attacks, and filming locations for Moby Dick, across the two maritime Pembrokeshire towns.

Jeremy Martineau of North Pembrokeshire Trade & Tourism explained the concept behind the spots chosen to feature on the trail: “Tourism today is about stories as much as scenery, and Fishguard has an extraordinary number of them for a town of its size,” he said, noting, “this trail shows how smaller places can celebrate what makes them distinctive and use their history to enrich both the visitor experience and the local economy.”

The Fishguard and Goodwick Heritage Trail is not only about the visitor economy, though. Martineau insists the new walk will make a difference to local residents too. He said, “When people understand the history of where they live, it builds pride in place and a stronger sense of community. This trail brings our shared stories out into the open—not just for visitors, but for residents too—and helps explain why Fishguard is such a special place to call home.”

An iconic UK suspension bridge that marked a decisive moment in travel history is being feted as it reaches its 200th anniversary. The Menai Suspension Bridge, connecting the island of Anglesey with mainland Wales, became the largest suspension bridge of its era when it was built between 1819 and 1826, and slashed nine hours from the previous 36-hour journey time between London and the gateway to Ireland, Holyhead.

At a plaque inauguration ceremony, David Porter, president of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), said: “Today’s anniversary marks two hundred years of the iconic Menai Bridge. The bridge is a hugely important part of the transport system in Wales, not only for those that live and work in the surrounding area but for the thousands of journeys made using it on the strategic road network.”

The bridge was built by Thomas Telford, a Scottish civil engineer who became known as the “Colossus of Roads” thanks to his prolific work on road, canal, tunnel, bridge, and harbour projects in the UK. He found a way to construct the bridge over a narrow channel of fast-moving water with conflicting tides, establishing a method that is still used today, innovating with hundreds of iron cables.

Spanning 180 metres and tall enough to allow 31 metres of clearance for tall ships to pass below, Telford’s bridge became only the second suspension bridge in the world to carry vehicles. Today, it handles around half a million vehicles per year.

30 Jan 1826 Menai Suspension Bridge opened – that links mainland Wales with the Isle of Anglesey was marked today with the unveiling of a plaque – @MenaiHeritage @ICEWales @ICEWalescymru @istructe @istructecnw – pic.twitter.com/86WujMZ8kJ
— ICE Shropshire (@ICEShropshire) January 31, 2026

“The bridge is testament to what is possible when civil engineers apply their skills for the benefit of society,” Porter told an audience including Thomas Telford Museum, the Menai Bridge Community Heritage Trust, Welsh government representatives, local authorities, and national engineering institutions. “It is more than just a feat of engineering,” he said, “it is a structure that is relied on by numerous people each and every day and is also a connection between the past with the present.”

The Menai Suspension Bridge has seen repairs and improvements over time. Its wooden deck and iron chains were replaced by steel before the dawn of the 20th century, and pre-Second-World-War upgrades were made to hangar sockets, which were replaced again after a closure in 2022. Works continue and are not set to finish until February 2027.

But Keith Jones, director of ICE Wales Cymru, hailed the bridge as “a vital link not just between Bangor but to mainland Britain and Europe” and “a great example of how infrastructure investment boots economies, connects communities, and benefits society.”

Noting the bridge’s longevity, he said the “iconic structure has been integral to the prosperity of Wales and beyond as a trans-European route.” The bridge’s “ground-breaking design put Wales on the map as a pioneer in civil engineering,” Jones went on, calling for “the same vision and resources” to create “confidence that future transport infrastructure projects will be delivered across Wales so that people and the planet can thrive.”

As well as the anniversary plaque, celebrations of the bridge and its revolutionary effect on travel include history talks and stories hosted by Bangor University.

Visit Wales has launched a new guided meditation podcast series, Chill Cymru, aimed at offering listeners an immersive journey through some of the country’s most scenic landscapes and cultural rhythms. The initiative debuted on 25 January, St Dwynwen’s Day, Wales’s national day of love, and is designed to transport audiences around the globe to the heart of Wales through sound, storytelling, and reflection.

The series consists of six short meditative audio episodes, each blending natural soundscapes, evocative narration, and ambient music to create a “multi-sensory escape” that seeks to highlight the beauty of Welsh landscapes. Chill Cymru is part of Visit Wales’s broader Hwyl campaign, which emphasises emotional connection and wellbeing.

According to Visit Wales, the aim of the series is to allow people to experience Wales in a different way, using sound to evoke place rather than relying solely on visual imagery. The podcasts are intended both for listeners seeking relaxation and for potential visitors who want to connect with Wales before travelling.

The meditations are narrated by BBC Radio 1 presenter Sian Eleri, who is originally from Caernarfon and hosts the station’s Chillest Show. Her voice guides listeners through a series of locations across Wales, encouraging mindfulness and calm reflection while highlighting the character and rhythm of each setting.

Each episode centres on a different part of the country. Locations include Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula, known for its sweeping coastline; the lavender fields at Cefnperfedd Uchaf in mid Wales; the mountain surroundings of Pen y Pass in Eryri National Park; Wern-y-Cwm Farm beneath Ysgyryd Fawr in Monmouthshire; Cardiff Bay; and the woodland landscape of Cwmcarn Forest in south-east Wales.

The podcasts blend audio such as wind, water and birdsong with gentle musical compositions, while elements of the Welsh language are woven into the narration. Visit Wales has said the intention is to reflect not only physical landscapes but also the emotional and cultural identity of the country.

“Each short meditative journey blends evocative narration with organic soundscaping. The result is both intimate and transportive, encouraging listeners to slow down, listen deeply, and connect to the rhythm of Cymru,” says Visit Wales.

Alongside the audio episodes, short films have been produced to accompany the series, pairing visuals of the featured locations with the meditation tracks. The podcasts are available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Visit Wales officials say the project reflects a growing interest in mindful and restorative experiences, with destination marketing shifting away from traditional promotion patterns toward creating deeper, more meaningful connections with places.

The podcast invites listeners to pause, breathe and experience Wales through sound, using stillness and sensory elements to present the country as a place of rest and reconnection, alongside its well-known outdoor adventure.

“We want to share our warm ‘croeso’ and unique ‘hwyl’ with the world and invite them to not just see but feel, taste and truly experience the ‘must do’ things we have on offer,” highlights Visit Wales.

The project represents an innovative approach to tourism promotion, using meditation and storytelling to showcase the landscapes, language and spirit of Wales to a global audience.

The Chill Cymru launch comes as Visit Wales continues to explore new ways of promoting the country internationally, moving beyond traditional destination advertising. The Hwyl campaign emphasises how Wales feels rather than simply how it looks, highlighting emotion, atmosphere and a sense of place.

Construction of Wales’ £300 million (€342 million) indoor ski resort is set to begin soon, pending the final approval. This vast leisure complex will feature one of Europe’s longest indoor ski slopes, as well as a tropical water park. As the Welsh government has decided not to call the application in, the final decision now rests with the local planning authority that originally approved the project in March.

The world-class leisure resort will be open all year round and will house a conference centre and an artificial indoor beach – the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes or after discussing important matters. Designed as a fully fledged multi-activity resort, Rhydycar West Development will feature not only a ski slope and tropical slides, but also an adventure park, a mountain coaster, a Clip ’n’ Climb, zip wires, and a range of family-oriented attractions.

The ski centre is planned to meet International Ski Federation (FIS) standards, with specialist equipment ensuring the slopes remain usable throughout the year. This is a non-negotiable requirement, as the facility aims to become the future headquarters for Team GB’s winter sports and Paralympic teams.

Following Merthyr Tydfil Council’s support in March, Welsh Government has confirmed it will not be calling in our planning application — giving the green light for the project to move forward.

Exciting times ahead! pic.twitter.com/PVb2oHL2AR
— Rhydycar West (@RhydycarWest) November 21, 2025

Located in Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales, the resort will offer a variety of accommodation options, including woodland lodges for nature lovers and a hotel for guests who prefer the lively atmosphere of après-ski and the luxury spa treatments on offer.

As such, the project is positioned to become a catalyst for economic development in the region and to create ‘opportunities’ for future generations. Rhydycar West CEO Ali Tyebkhan has promised that the development will bring “lasting economic, social and regeneration benefits to the region”. He also thanked the Welsh Government and the local community, whose ‘belief and enthusiasm’ in the project played a vital role in ‘achieving this milestone’.

In a letter, the Welsh Government explained that, while there were issues of conflict with national policy, these were not of a scale requiring ministerial intervention. “The application will not be called in for determination by the Welsh Ministers”, it confirmed.

The planning application is expected to return to the Planning, Regulatory and Licensing Committee in early 2026. Despite a recommendation to refuse, the committee had already backed the proposal in March 2025, voting unanimously in favour.

This decision has been welcomed by the snow sports community. Robin Kellen, chief executive of Snowsport Cymru Wales, shared his “delight at this exciting news”, calling it ‘huge for snow sports in Wales and the wider GB community’. He added that it would likely result in increased opportunities for people to participate in skiing and snowboarding at local and national levels within Wales, as well as being a huge step forward in terms of the potential to develop competitions and training for our GB team athletes.

The developers estimate that the project will create 842 jobs and contribute £38.1 million (€43.5) to the local economy. Many locals appear to share that optimism. As one resident wrote on social media, the resort “will transform the town, its economy and, just as importantly, change how Merthyr Tydfil is so often unfairly talked about”.

Widely regarded as one of Britain’s most spectacular railway routes, the Conwy Valley Line has reopened following an upgrade designed to make it more resistant to extreme weather. Stretching almost 90 kilometres through north-west Wales, the line runs between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Llandudno Junction, cutting through the heart of Snowdonia National Park.

Although it is picture-perfect and famed for its breathtaking views as it winds past mountains, waterfalls and forests, the line is also the most exposed to the elements in Britain. In the past decade alone, it has been forced to close for over 500 days due to storm damage and flooding. The most recent closure, which lasted a month, was to allow essential improvement works along the route.

These extensive works included clearing 600,000 square metres of overgrown ‘high-risk’ vegetation, such as trees that could fall onto the track and endanger passengers. The embankments were also strengthened to prevent landslides. A new safe walkway was constructed to allow maintenance staff to access the line more easily while carrying out essential repairs.

Network Rail also trialled a new leaf-clearing technique during the works. This pilot programme involved applying a special gel to the tracks, which was developed in collaboration with Irish Rail. This solution is designed to break down leaf contamination, remain effective for up to seven days and reactivate with rain. This is intended to significantly reduce delays caused by slippery rails, which are a persistent problem on rural routes.

Nick Millington, Route Director at Network Rail Wales and Borders, assured that the “improvements will make a real difference to the reliability of services during the autumn and winter months, protecting the line from future storm damage and keeping communities connected across North Wales”.

The line is mostly used by daily commuters, but also by visitors exploring the countryside. The one-hour journey offers dreamy views of Snowdonia’s peaks and valleys, passing through the picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed, known as the “Gateway to Snowdonia”, and the no less charming town of Llanrwst, nestled at the foot of Gwydir Forest. Other highlights include the Roman Bridge village, the dramatic Conwy Falls near Betws-y-Coed, and excursions to the historic Llechwedd Slate Caverns near Blaenau Ffestiniog. They are perfect for nature lovers and photographers alike, offering intimate access to the raw beauty of the Welsh countryside.

Colin Lea, Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales, thanked “passengers and local residents for their patience while this essential work was carried out”, adding that the “Conwy Valley line is a vital link for the communities of Conwy, and this investment means it’s now better prepared to withstand the challenges of severe weather in the years ahead”.

The UK is continuing to invest heavily in railway infrastructure to boost resilience, make commuting more efficient, and attract more visitors through sustainable tourism.

Other famous lines include the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, which gained worldwide fame through the Harry Potter films; the Far North Line in the Highlands, which crosses a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and several train routes that traverse the Yorkshire Dales and venture deep into the beautiful Welsh countryside.

Few journeys, however, capture the country’s lush, varied landscapes quite like the Conwy Valley Line. All it now takes to be swept away is a ticket and a window seat.

From 1 September 2025, young people in Wales aged 16-21 can travel on buses nationwide with £1 (€1.15) single tickets or £3 (€3.46) day passes as part of a discounted fare trial. Starting 3 November, the scheme will extend to children aged 5-15. Additionally, holders of mytravelpass can enjoy a 30 per cent discount on weekly, monthly, or yearly tickets.

The scheme will cover all journeys on participating bus services within Wales, with the aim of encouraging greater use of public transport. Journeys that start or finish in Wales but cross the border into England will also be included, up to the first stop across the border.

The Welsh government has allocated £15 million (approximately €17.3 million) over two financial years to fund the initiative, as part of a budget agreement with Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds. An additional £7 million (approximately €8.1 million) will be invested in November to extend the scheme to children aged 5-15. “This £1 bus fare is a transformational step forward for young people,” said Dodds.

We’re investing £15M to give young people cheaper bus fares.

The scheme for 16 to 21s starts on 1 September.

Young people will need a my travel pass to get the £1 single or £3 daily fares with participating operators.https://t.co/2x05knfgcN
Your Priorities.
In the UK, MPs have been pushing for free travel for young people, while Scotland has been offering free bus journeys to everyone aged five to 21 since 2022. Welsh Government Transport Minister Ken Skates stated that this should help young people “access education, training, employment, and leisure”. He also encouraged those “who don’t yet have a mytravelpass to apply so they can take full advantage of the scheme.”

Eligible passengers must apply for mytravelpass through the Transport for Wales (TfW) website, providing proof of age to access the discounted fares, which will run until September 2026. According to Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at TfW, over 10,000 people have already applied for the pass.

According to David Beer of the independent transport watchdog Transport Focus, this new bus fare scheme is “an attractive proposition” that could encourage people to use buses instead of other forms of transportation. However, he noted that a recent survey conducted by his organisation found that young people in Wales were less satisfied with the value for money of public transport compared to their counterparts in England and Scotland.

Major bus companies have voluntarily opted to take part in the new scheme.

Owners of self-catering holiday rentals in Wales could get a reprieve from “brutal” tax rules that stakeholders say have been harming the industry, if new proposals from the Welsh government are approved.

Council tax changes introduced in 2023 made it 80% more difficult for holiday accommodation owners to qualify for lower business tax rates. If rental properties are not available for 252 days per year, and not rented for at least 182 days, the new rules state owners must pay taxes meant for second homes. Meanwhile, in England, the previous thresholds of 70 nights rented out of 140 available per year remain in place.

Intended to alleviate a local housing crisis by cutting the number of second homes and gaining control over the holiday let sector, the rule change has come in for much criticism. According to the Professional Association of Self-Caterers (PASC), rental property owners have been abandoning their businesses as they can no longer make the business model work. Some have been faced with tens of thousands of pounds in backdated tax bills.

Consultation published by @WelshGovernment, ends 20 November, on the 182 day tax rule, proposing small changes to support tourism and hospitality businesses.

More#WelshTaxes #WelshBudgethttps://t.co/b9xdbM7wQU pic.twitter.com/tznaKWwISp
— Welsh Treasury (@WelshTreasury) August 28, 2025

Now the Welsh authorities appear to be relenting. A consultation published on 28 August 2025 is seeking to introduce more flexibility for property owners by proposing a “12-month grace period before they may have to pay higher council tax rates when they move from non-domestic to domestic classification.”

What’s more, to “give the sector extra stability”, the rules would be eased to allow the 182-day rental minimum to be reached over “several years” if needed, and to include up to 14 days of “free holidays donated to charity to count towards the 182-day target.”

Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language, Mark Drakeford, has explained the consultation’s proposals, noting that “While most holiday let owners are already meeting the new rules brought in from 2023, with 60% of properties meeting the letting criteria, we have listened to those working in the sector and are proposing small changes to the current rules to support them.”

Your Welsh Labour Government has delivered £26 billion for Wales. pic.twitter.com/kVuSWmUKU0
— Welsh Labour (@WelshLabour) March 4, 2025

Acknowledging the “important contribution to the Welsh economy” made by tourism, Drakeford said: “Wales has so much to offer, and we want to ensure we realise that potential in a way that achieves a balance between our communities, businesses, landscapes and visitors. We work closely with tourism and hospitality businesses to help address the challenges they face, while ensuring everyone makes a fair contribution towards local economies and funding public services.”

The consultation is open to public responses until 20 November 2025.

Thorne Island, a privately owned rocky island of around 2.49 acres in size, situated 3 nautical miles off the coast of Pembrokeshire in west Wales, has been placed on the market for offers exceeding £3 million (€3.5 million), according to the listing on the Strutt & Parker website.

Offering not just sweeping sea views but a fully restored 19th-century fort equipped with modern luxuries, Thorne Island boasts a mid-Victorian citadel that was built between 1852 and 1854 as one of Palmerston’s Haven defences to guard Milford Haven Waterway from Napoleonic attack. The fortress was initially sold in 1932 and has been used as both a hotel and a private residence.

Among its standout features are a helipad for quick access, a covered rooftop bar with a games room for entertaining, and a sea-view office perched high above the surrounding waters. The property combines the rugged character of its historic military architecture with the convenience and style of modern living, framed by the wild beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast.

Now registered as a “Hotel & Premises” for business rates purposes, the property offers flexible potential, from private retreat to boutique hospitality.

Tech entrepreneur Mike Conner, former CEO of Appsbroker, acquired the once-derelict fort in 2017 for approximately £500,000, inspired by a YouTube video. Over the past eight years, he invested around £2 million into restoring and reinventing the site as a self-contained, off-grid sanctuary. “There was a lot of stuff that needed to be done to make it happen,” he said to CNN.

The renovation included installing renewable energy systems such as solar panels, a 100 kWh battery storage, heating, a running drinking water system, modern plumbing with full water-flush facilities, and a biodigester sewage treatment plant, making it entirely self-sufficient.

Logistical challenges included 350 helicopter trips over two days to deliver building materials, and rust-covered walls were sandblasted for six months to reveal original stone. Meanwhile, builders lived on site in the fort’s barracks for four years to complete the reconstruction.

The restored fortress now offers around 8,000 square feet of living space that can accommodate up to 20 people. It includes five bedrooms, grand dining rooms, and terraces with barrack-style walls. Common areas reveal original brickwork and vaulted ceilings, while a rooftop bar and games area crown the structure with panoramic coastal views. Access to Thorne Island is by boat or helicopter, with the property featuring a private jetty, helipad, and multiple moorings.

Set within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, the island is surrounded by sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, caves, popular fishing spots and water sports areas. The estate agents describe it as “an adventurer’s paradise,” offering seclusion and sweeping scenic beauty.

Reflecting on the surreal island isolation and creative work done over the years, Conner, who holds a degree in industrial design, described the project as a personal challenge he was eager to take on. “It was quite a healthy mid-life crisis by some of my friends’ standards,” he said.

The island remains ideal for someone looking for a dramatic, luxurious yet secluded space or wants a unique, unconventional hospitality venture to be open to the public.

Wales has passed a new law introducing a tourist tax from 2027, which will see visitors pay an extra £1.30 per night. According to the Welsh government, the revenue generated will be used to upgrade tourism infrastructure and support local communities.

Although first proposed in 2018, the Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy) Etc. (Wales) the Bill was only passed by the Senedd on 9 July 2025. It is expected to take another two years before the tax is enforced, as a consultation process with local communities must be completed before each council decides whether or not to apply the levy.

Once approved, any visitor aged 18 and over staying in hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and campsites will be asked to pay the tax. The amount, 5p higher than what was proposed in November 2023, will vary depending on the type of accommodation.

Mark Drakeford has put a visitor tax on to come into Wales.

Guests of hostels and campsites will be charged 75p per night, while those staying in hotels and B&Bs will pay £1.30.

Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford defended the new levy, saying that similar laws have been passed with ‘success all over the world’.

‘By voting to back this measure, Wales is joining many other worldwide destinations which already benefit from similar levies. They ensure the pressures and opportunities tourism bring are balanced fairly between visitors and residents.’

‘Tourism Tax’ passed by Senedd amid backlash from Welsh business leaders

Here's what Finance Cabinet Secretary Mark Drakeford said when we asked him about the plans for last month's issue of the Businessin Wales magazine.

Read more: https://t.co/JfmhTrFII1 pic.twitter.com/4LVeMRtf8w
— Businessin Wales (@businessinWal) July 9, 2025

He further stressed that ‘the levy is a small contribution that will make a big difference to our communities’.

Another avowed goal of the law in Wales is to save the Welsh language by creating more favourable conditions for it to thrive. The Welsh government hopes that the revenue generated by the levy, which is estimated at £38 million per year, will support efforts to increase the number of Welsh speakers to one million by 2050, although how exactly this will be achieved has yet to be defined.

Wales is not the first part of the UK to adopt such a measure. It is following Scotland, where new legislation passed at Holyrood in May 2024 gives local councils the power to impose a visitor levy. Edinburgh will pioneer this, introducing a 5% surcharge on overnight stays from 24 July 2026, applicable to hotels, B&Bs, hostels, self-catered accommodation, and campsites. Glasgow has approved a similar 5% tourist tax, set to take effect in January 2027, projected to generate about £16 million annually.

While English law currently prohibits cities from taxing visitors, Liverpool and Manchester have identified legal loopholes and introduced alternative visitor charges.

Tourist levies are becoming increasingly common around the world. France led the way with its ‘taxe de séjour’, introduced as early as 1910, and today more than 60 countries impose some form of tourist tax.

These measures are often more effective at raising revenue than deterring visitors. In Venice, for example, the €5 entrance fee to the historic centre generated €2.4 million in 2024, but has had little to no impact on the number of tourists.
