Basquiat’s fascination with the human body began when his mother gave him an anatomy book after he was seriously injured in a car accident at the age of seven. This obsession, pursued with a “bulimic” appetite, is evident throughout his entire body of work. When asked at the age of 22 how he usually began a piece of work, Basquiat answered simply, “I suppose I would start with a head.”

Basquiat: Headstrong focuses on the artist’s drawings, centred uniquely on this motif. Featuring work produced between 1981 and 1983, the exhibition showcases pieces created using dense, richly pigmented oil sticks. These depict heads, skulls, quasi-anatomical faces, or even helmets, with eyes and mouths appearing with raw intensity as gateways to inner emotions and psychological worlds.

While many of the heads face the viewer directly, subtle shifts in angle distort their internal structure, creating the impression that the faces are splitting, rotating, or collapsing under emotional pressure. Lines loop and spiral to form dense networks that evoke mental agitation and physical tension. Many sheets bear dust, footprints, and stains, physical evidence that Basquiat often worked on the floor of his studio.

Contemporary artist Dana Schutz noted that she was struck by the energy emanating from the drawings, which she attributes to “mental thoughts, heat, pain, or smells.” Fellow artist Alvaro Barrington adds that while some heads are formal experiments, others serve as “biological, biographical, geological or cultural explorations.” Similarly, Julie Mehretu describes how Basquiat captured the brain as a “psycho-computer” long before the digital era.

Basquiat’s touch is as immediate and powerful in these drawings as in his paintings. The colours appear even more vivid, perhaps because there is nothing to distract from the heads placed squarely on the page. These drawings are strikingly devoid of the symbols and textual fragments often found in his larger works, with one notable exception: the artist’s signature crown.

Often seen hovering above black male figures, such as athletes, musicians, and writers, the crown – which can resemble a saint’s aureole – allowed Basquiat to elevate historically marginalised subjects to a royal, even saintly, status.

While one might wonder whether these drawings served as studies for later canvases, they stand as finished works in their own right rather than preparatory sketches, though the mystery remains as to why the artist chose not to show them during his lifetime.

The only painting included in the exhibition is Untitled (1982), which features a large skull-like head surrounded by graffiti-style markings against a soft blue background. Often referred to as the artist’s iconic skull painting, it sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2017 for $110.5 million to Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa.

Louisiana curator Anders Kold writes that the heads are “characterised by shuddering dissonances between their anatomical parts,” ranging “from something close to the fullness of living flesh to the appearance of skulls, masks or mechanical, automaton-like figures.”

Some of these works were first introduced to the public in 1990, two years after Basquiat’s death, at the Robert Miller Gallery in New York, but the Louisiana exhibition offers a more concentrated psychological study, inviting viewers to see the artist as a human presence among others rather than a myth, while also opening up the opportunity to reconsider questions of power, race and representation that remain central today.

Early reactions have been enthusiastic. On Instagram, fashion historian Laird Borrelli-Persson described Basquiat as “the man of the moment – again – always,” while fellow artists emphasise the deep connection between Basquiat’s work and hip-hop culture, arguing that he remains more relevant today than almost any other late twentieth-century artist.

Police chief inspector, Jesper Bøjgaard Madsen, stated that they could not yet confirm how many drones were involved or who was responsible. According to the Danish national police, the drones behaved in a way that was similar to the drones that had shut down Copenhagen airport a couple of days earlier.

“It says something about the times we live in and what we as a society must be prepared to deal with,” said Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier this week. Frederiksen also condemned the attack, labelling it “the most serious attack yet on Denmark’s infrastructure.” According to Frederiksen, Russian involvement in the incident could not be excluded, though Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the claim as “baseless.”

At a press conference on Thursday morning, Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said that Copenhagen was weighing whether to invoke NATO’s Article 4, which allows member states to consult allies when their security is threatened. Poulsen described the drone incursion as a hybrid attack carried out with a “systematic approach.” Authorities confirmed that permission has now been granted to shoot down any drones in the event of future incidents.

“We will track down those responsible,” Lund Poulsen declared, adding that Denmark has a range of military assets at its disposal, including F-35 fighter jets and naval frigates.

Denmark has not yet decided whether to activate NATO’s Article 4, says Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. Last night’s events are described as a hybrid attack, with drones flown near Denmark by a suspected professional actor.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern of airspace violations in Europe. Denmark is not alone in its vigilance. Last week, Estonia and Poland invoked Article 4 to consult with allies over separate incidents, while Romania also reported Russian drones entering its airspace.

Moscow denied breaching Estonian territory and claimed that the Polish incident was unintentional, but provided no response to Romania’s report. After a meeting on 23 September, NATO released a statement condemning Russia’s actions and warning it would employ “all necessary military and non-military means” to ensure its defence.

The Zoo in Aalborg, Denmark, shared a call-out post on its Facebook page on Thursday, 31 July, inviting pet owners to donate small healthy pets to the zoo to help feed its carnivorous animals. A link featured in the publication leads to the zoo’s website, where it’s noted that the facility is also interested in receiving horses, however, they are considered under strict conditions such as being under a certain size (maximum of 147 cm at the withers), having valid health documentation, and accompanied by a passport, with donors eligible for tax deductions. According to the website, they accept up to four small animals per visit on weekdays between 10 am and 1 pm, with no appointment required.

The zoo defends the practice as part of its effort to replicate natural feeding behaviours, stating that it’s their responsibility to mimic the animals’ natural food chain and ensure that animals have a healthy, natural and species-appropriate diet — “for the sake of both animal welfare and professional integrity.”

Pets are promised to be “gently euthanised by trained staff” and then used as food. “This way, nothing goes to waste – and we ensure natural behaviour, nutrition and well-being of our predators,” the zoo said.

This initiative, however, has drawn significant public backlash. Across social media platforms, commenters criticised the notion of surrendering healthy pets to be used as food. Others, including some animal experts and local proponents, see the program as a practical and humane alternative to abandonment or shelter overcapacity.

Despite the backlash, the zoo says that the practice is long-standing and regulated, as Danish animal welfare rules permit zoos to accept animal donations under strict conditions. As of now, the zoo has not commented publicly in response to the criticism, but the debate has highlighted a broader discussion around ethical feeding practices in zoos and the role of transparency in animal care.

6. Explore architectural landmarks

Denmark is the birthplace of famous names such as Arne Jacobsen and Jørn Utzon, the name behind the design of the Sydney Opera House.

Designed by Bjarke Ingels, the Danish Maritime Museum is one of the architectural wonders of the country. The architecture of the building was inspired by a whirlpool, winning the award for Best Building in the World Architecture Festival. Another place that is worth seeing is the residential building Bølgen, designed by studio Henning Larsen Architects. 8. ⁠Cooler but longer summer days

Denmark is the perfect destination for anyone who doesn’t fancy the scorching temperatures of Southern Europe. The average temperatures in the summer are between 15 °C and 22°C, with peak temperatures occasionally reaching up to 30°C during short heatwaves.

Thanks to its northern latitude, Denmark enjoys up to 17 hours of daylight in June. The sunrise is as early as 3:30 am and the sun goes down around 10 pm, allowing visitors enough time for outdoor activities and exploration. While sometimes it could rain, showers are typically light and pass quickly but anyone travelling should keep that in mind.

Denmark has confirmed its reputation as a global foodie destination. In 2021, a local restaurant in Copenhagen became the World’s Best Restaurant in 2021, attracting food tourists from across the globe.

For those interested in tasting typically Danish cuisine, the menu mostly consists of ingredients such as bread, potatoes, fish, and pork. Typical dishes include smørrebrød (Denmark’s open-faced sandwich of rye bread topped with roast beef, shrimp with eggs, or pickled herring), oysters, pickled herring, stegt flæsk (Denmark’s national dish – crispy pork served with parsley sauce and potatoes).

Denmark’s 400-year-old, state-affiliated PostNord, shared with Sweden and originally established in 1624, is making the switch to a parcel-only service, due to a 90% drop in letter volumes over the last two decades. That decline has steepened recently, falling off by 30% in the last twelve months alone, to hit a low of 110 million letters per year.

Anyone who has already purchased postage, which costs around 29 Danish krone (€3.89) will be allowed to claim a refund until a cut-off date in 2026, authorities say, but for some, the issue is about more than the price of a stamp.

Impact on elderly and isolated communities

Over 100 million letters still sent every year is not nothing and critics say around 271,000 people, including the older generation and remote communities will be hit hard by the decision. Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2 Marlene Rishoj Cordes, from Aeldre Sagen (DaneAge) pointed out: “There are many who are very dependent on letters being delivered regularly. These include hospital appointments, vaccinations or decisions regarding home care.”

Danish parliamentarian and author Pelle Dragsted echoed those concerns and laid the blame on the privatisation of the national postal market in 2024 and the application of VAT to postage, which he says pushed up prices and drove customers elsewhere.

Cultural switch to digital services

However, others note that Denmark has been a swift adopter of e-commerce, ranking as one of the biggest users of digital services in the world with people carrying everything from official ID to cash on their devices. It’s quite a cultural turnaround for a country whose literary stars, such as Charlotta Dorothea Biehl, built careers around the epistolary form. The rise and fall of Hans Christian Andersen’s friendship with British author Charles Dickens is also documented in their correspondence, which would have been handled by PostNord.

Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen has noted other private postal providers will still operate in Denmark, including distribution firm DAO, which is reportedly upping its letter-delivery in response to the state service’s closure. But the country’s 1,500 distinctive red, semi-capsule-shaped postboxes will be decommissioned over the coming months, and nearly a third of the workforce, 1,500 out of 4,600 PostNord workers, will be laid off as a result of the move.

More than tripling the number of participating attractions to 90 across the Danish capital, the programme will double in duration, running for nine weeks from 17 June – 17 August 2025. Instead the scheme raises awareness and rewards tourists who act responsibly with “unique experiences.”

Arrive by train, stay longer

Recognising that transportation creates the biggest climate impact, among the bonuses on offer through CopenPay are perks for those who chose to arrive by train. These include free bike rentals, yoga sessions, guided tours, or discounted entry to some of the city’s top attractions.

Travelling less by staying longer is also seen as a green behaviour, so “visitors who stay four days or more” also receive “benefits like free bike rentals or a vegetarian meal.”

98% approval

In 2024, the trial run proved popular, with 98% of tourists saying they recommend taking part. The pilot scheme saw “tons of litter” collected and bike rentals soared by 29%.

With many destinations looking to develop a more sustainable model, Wonderful Copenhagen has been invited to share the secret of what Wallpaper has called a ‘regenerative travel’ revolution, giving tips to over 100 organisations worldwide – a role Wonderful Copenhagen embraces as it hopes the initiative will expand everywhere. 

“One of the great things about tourism is cultural exchange,” Pedersen says. “We learn a lot from our visitors, and in return, we hope they’ll leave Copenhagen inspired – to bike more, choose more plant-based meals, and continue making more responsible choices wherever they are.”

Other destinations trialling similar initiatives include Fiji’s “Loloma Hour”, which encourages guests to spend an hour during their stay contributing to the environment, culture, or community. And Hawaii’s Governor has said he has received so many offers of assistance after recent its recent wildfire tragedies that he believes visitors who love Hawaii are prepared to make a contribution in order to preserve its natural beauty.

The budget Irish airline has routes in place from London Stansted to Aalborg and Billund. It also flies to Billund (a popular destination thanks to Legoland’s presence there) from Edinburgh and Manchester airports. But at the end of March 2025, all those flights will be wiped from schedules. Staff in Denmark are being offered jobs at other Ryanair bases.

1.7 million seats to be cut

As a result, Denmark will lose out on a capacity of 1.7 million seats, 32 routes and two aircraft for summer 2025, Ryanair has pointed out. It said in a statement it will be focusing its attention on “competing EU countries like Sweden, Italy, and Hungary who are abolishing their aviation taxes to promote connectivity, traffic, jobs, and economic growth.”

It is not the first time Ryanair has criticised airport management fees and aviation taxes around Europe or attempted to influence government policy on the issue. The carrier was recently accused of “blackmail” by Spanish airport management company Aena after it cut flights to regional airports for similar reasons to do with what it considers excessive airport charges.

Why is the tax being blamed?

Spain has accused Ryanair of using the airport charges as an excuse for its own ruthless business decisions and for some commentators, it might be difficult not to come to the same conclusion when looking at the commercial reality in Denmark. It’s true that Ryanair’s tight operations allow it to offer tickets starting at just £14.99 (around €17.09). However, that low price point means that, even if the carrier passed the full cost of the new aviation tax of just DKK 50 [€6.70] onto would-be flyers, customers would still only pay around £20 (less than €24) for their flight – hardly a bank-breaking amount.

Meanwhile, environmental campaign groups such as Stay Grounded have welcomed the airport taxes, telling Euronews for example, that “Measures to stop the growth of air traffic are exactly what we need.” And it remains to be seen whether Danish stakeholders and authorities will care enough to get into a war of words with Ryanair. Billund boasts over 80 destinations served by other carriers, such as Air Baltic, Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, KLM, LOT-Polish Airlines, Lufthansa and SAS. Aalborg in turn serves 40 direct destinations via scheduled and charter flights across the seasons.

“Coolcations” and “van life”

As southern European nations swelter under summer heatwaves, a rise in so-called “coolcations” has seen growing numbers of vacationers heading to more temperate climes and Nordic countries for their summer holiday. That phenomenon, combined with the increasing popularity of camper van breaks and “van life” culture means that some parts of the world are experiencing a huge influx of visitors in mobile homes and recreational vehicles.

Denmark is no exception. The last five years have seen a 27% surge in camper vans in the kingdom. Figures for 2022 from Visit Denmark show 2.3 million people spent at least one night in a camper van under the Danish stars.

Wild west for camping

In fact, problem camping is now so frequent in Denmark that locals are fed up with views at beauty spots being hogged by campers, as well as the litter and parking issues rafts of campers bring. Peter Krusborg Pedersen, CEO of tourist company Visit Northwest Coast (Visit Nordvestkysten), has gone so far as to describe the situation as the “wild west”.

Camping is almost a way of life in Nordic nations, with a perception that the right to roam and camp is enshrined in law and society in general. But there is a common misconception that “wild” or “free” camping is allowed anywhere on Danish soil – and that is not the case.

“You can always park and sleep in your campervan and motorhome in official campsites in Denmark. There are also rest stops around the country, including public car parks, where you can pull up, refresh, refill water, sleep overnight and use the services, provided you don’t make a camp. If this is not allowed at specific car parks, you will see signs stating this,” Visit Denmark, the country’s tourism agency, notes.

Check the signs

Making a camp, whether you’re driving off the road into the forest or staying put in a layby, includes activities such as putting up an awning, making a fire and setting up chairs or bedding outside the vehicle, but many camping enthusiasts remain unaware of what they can and can’t do. For this reason, new regulations are being proposed in some municipalities to tackle the issue and better inform people about where and when they can pull over and take time to enjoy the scenery.

Pastries, museum entries and kayaks

From 15 July, under the new “CopenPay” scheme, activities such as litter-picking, using public transport or cycling will qualify both visitors and local residents for a range of free treats including Danish pastries, free coffees, glasses of wine, and even kayak rentals. 

Using the catchphrase, “Copenhagen attractions reward climate-friendly actions”, a website gives ideas for green activities and details on a map the places where the perks are being dished out, from rooftop bars to galleries and museums. None of the companies and museums involved in the scheme are being subsidised or reimbursed for the incentives they are putting on offer.

Environmental offsetting

The idea behind the initiative is to promote ways tourists can compensate for the “burden” they put on the environment. The website notes that “All our choices have an environmental impact, so why not make conscious decisions that benefit us all and be rewarded for them?”

“When you travel abroad – if you fly to other places or you travel by car – you pollute. One of the things we can change is getting people to act more sustainably at the destination,” said Rikke Holm Petersen Wonderful Copenhagen’s communications director.

One interesting aspect of the scheme is that it is “trust-based” Petersen said, and would not require complicated proof that visitors are telling the truth about completing an eco-friendly task. “In some attractions you might have to show a picture of you riding a bike, or of your public transportation ticket,” she explained.

A green souvenir

Dubbing the idea a “little step towards the green transition”, Petersen acknowledged that only “a small percentage” of the city’s estimated yearly 12 million overnight guests would likely participate, especially as the reward programme is a pilot initially set to end on 11 August 2024.

1. The meaning of the name

The Faroese language is not simple. Similar to Icelandic, it has its own alphabet of 29 letters as well as three genders and four cases. Føroyar, the name of the Faroe Islands in Faroese, is actually from the Old Norse for sheep, so the meaning of the name is fær (sheep) and oyar (islands). Looking at the many sheep which constantly roam the islands the name certainly seems appropriate, and even their oldest existing document relates to sheep; the Sheep Letter is a set of laws and rules about sheep farming written back in 1298.

2. Their own people

The Faroe islands are a self-governing nation within the Danish kingdom, with seventeen out of the eighteen major islands inhabited. However, the islands’ 49 000 or so inhabitants don’t see themselves as Danish. Occupied by British troops during the second world war, after helping with the British war effort, including supplying fish to British ports which was very dangerous at the time, in 1940 Winston Churchill recognised the Faroese flag. It had been banned by Denmark, however when the war ended it became the official symbol of the islands and still is today. April 25^th is Flag Day or Flaggdagur and is a national holiday which celebrates when the Merkið flag was finally recognised by the Danish Government.

3. Statistical wonders

Because of the small size of the Faroe Islands, there are some interesting statistical tricks which have put the Faroese at the top of certain tables. For example, although they only have one Nobel prize winner (Niels Ryberg Finsen for medicine in 1903 for his work on light therapy for skin diseases), statistically speaking they have the highest number of Nobel winners per capita in the world. In the same way they have also managed to achieve the highest number of Fifa points per capita, despite their men’s team being 113^th and the women’s team 93^rd in Fifa world rankings.

4. A unique undersea roundabout

In 2020 the Faroe Islands completed an underground roundabout as part of the Eysturoyartunnilin, an 11km tunnel connecting the Faroe’s most populous islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy. The roundabout itself lies at the geographical centre of the Faroe islands and there is a second one scheduled to open in 2023, connecting Streymoy with Sandoy. The project in its whole cost about €360 million, or €50 000 per inhabitant. The Eysturoyartunnilin is the longest of 14 tunnels in the Faroe Islands which travel through mountains and under water enabling easy transport and communication. Wifi is even available in the tunnels, and impressively the small island villages have faster connections than most of London.

5. Treasured wool

It’s not surprising that the ‘Sheep Island’ is know for its wool. The Faroese have more than 300 official names for fleece patterns, and the sheep and their treasured wool come in white, black and red, a kind of rich brown.

The wool’s high levels of lanolin, a grease/wax like substance produced by woolly animals, means it is ideal protection against the wind, which there is a lot of, and Faroese socks were even popular among Napoleonic soldiers.
