Food and cycling. Two things we Belgians greatly appreciate yet seldom combine. We often tend to concentrate on one of two things. Either we put on our cycling gear and make an intensive day out of it, or we put on our most stretchy pants and order a five course meal at a yummy restaurant. And if you look at things like that, sure, the two of them don’t seem to be a match. However, if you approach the matter in a more relaxed way, a culinary cycling tour can actually be great.
Firstly, of course, cycling is one of the most sustainable ways of getting from one point to another. You don’t pollute the air, you don’t make too much noise and you take up little space. Great. Secondly, cycling is a bit of a workout. Meaning you don’t need to feel bad about those extra calories you’re about to consume – they’ll be gone in no-time. And thirdly, it’s the ideal way of discovering a region you might not be that familiar with just yet. As you’re a little slower than by car, you really get to take in the landscape surrounding you AND you can stop whenever you want to enjoy it to the best.
Best food in Namur
If one of your good intentions for 2022 was to go out and explore Belgium more often, and if you’re a bit of a foodie, we’ve found the ideal activity for you. This summer, Eileen Mossiat, the woman behind the Instagram account @namur_food, is organising culinary cycling tours throughout the province of Namur and you could be one of the lucky bastards to participate. The only thing you have to do is book your spot.
But of course, you’d probably like to know more about the specifics before you book. First of all, it’s good to know that you’ll have to bring your own bike or make sure to rent one in the region. Second, a ticket costs 45 euros per person but children under 12 can join for free. And third, there are three dates and three different routes – each one is about 30 kilometres long and you’ll stop every 6 kilometres or so to taste some of Namur’s goodies.
