On September 23rd, a Korean temple food tasting event was held at the Korean Embassy to the European Union for about 500 diplomatic corps based in Brussels.
The event was organized by Bouddhist Nun Wookwan, the governor of Gameun Temple in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province and the director of the Mahayeon Temple Food Research Institute. Bouddhist Nun Wookwan, who is also the director of the Temple Food Research Institute in Gangnam, is one of the leading temple food experts in Korea. She has been invited to New York, Spain, Hungary, and the UK to introduce Korean temple food. She recently published a food recipe book entitled Wookwan’s Korean Temple Food.
A total of about 20 temple foods were provided to the attendees on this day. A variety of side dishes appeared along with rice and soup, such as gardenia bean rice, tofu soybean paste soup, tomato bibim-myeon, pickled cucumber, banyan flower bugak, tofu gangjeong, and three-colored herbs. 3 kinds of soybean paste such as soybean paste, 15 kinds of seasonings such as dried chamomile leaves and acorns, 7 kinds of pickled vegetables such as Myeongyeong, 6 kinds of bean sprouts such as lotus root bugak, and 50 kinds of various ingredients such as greens and vegetables such as gondre were also on display.
Along with Korean ingredients, food was also prepared with local ingredients, such as yellow paprika white kimchi and pickled cucumber, thus captivating the taste buds of the attendees.
The temple food event was one of the main attractions of the national day reception to commemorate the 120th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Belgium.
A lot more people expressed their intention to participate than initially expected. I was able to reaffirm interest in temple food along with Korea’s increased international status.H.E. YOON Soongu, Ambassador of Korean to the European Union
Following the two events, Bouddist Nun Wookwan plans to hold a temple food tasting event at the ‘Korean Culture Days’ festival which take place in the Place de Brouckere on September 25th, and to give a lecture on temple food at the W:Halll in Woluwe Saint Pierre.
