Merelize Van Der Merwe, a 32-year-old South African and fervent supporter of hunting, exhibited on Facebook the heart of a giraffe she killed in a reserve.
On February 14, on the occasion of Valentine’s Day, Merelize shared a couple of shots on Facebook in which she happily displays the heart of the killed giraffe: «Have you ever wondered how big a giraffe’s heart is? I’m absolutely over the moon with my great Valentine’s Day gifts! ».
The husband paid about 1738 euros so that she could kill a 17-year-old giraffe and extract its heart as a Valentine’s Day gift. “My husband had booked a trip for us to the lost city building in Sun City for our Valentine’s weekend, but our plans quickly changed. My wonderful husband knew this was my dream. I felt like a little girl for two weeks and I counted the days. Later I was inundated with emotions, while I had been waiting for years to have this opportunity!”.
As a reaction, many comments from animal lovers who, in all languages, show all their shock and anger.
“Anyone who kills another sentient being, cuts his heart and boasts of it, falls within the definition of a sociopath” comments Elisa Allen, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “One day, the trophy hunt will be indicated as a sign of a psychiatric disorder, as it should already be today: it’s just serial killings and bloodlust coupled with a burning desire to show off” Elisa concludes.
