The new service will run year round, with two departures a day, between Oslo and Berlin, with stops (in north to south order) in Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Lund, Malmo, Copenhagen airport and Copenhagen H, Odense, Kolding, Padborg, Hamburg, and Berlin.

Crossing four countries, from Norway, to Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, the complete journey is expected to take between 14 and 15 hours but will be slashed by an hour and a half when the new Fehmarn Belt tunnel between Germany and Denmark opens. That’s set for 2029 at the earliest but is more likely to be sometime in 2031, meaning the train service, which is slated to launch in 2028, could operate for up to three years with the longer duration. Ahead of that, a shorter version of the trip between Hamburg and Copenhagen will start as soon as winter 2027.

The DSB, Deutsche Bahn, Vy partnership will mark the first time in two decades that passengers will be able to make this trip by rail with no changes. Boarding the ICE L trains, travellers will be able to take advantage of the “L” or “low” floor, giving step-free access, while the carriage configuration provides for a restaurant car and family section, as well as first class options if desired.

Gro Bakstad, CEO of Vy, said: “It is fantastic that we are now getting a new, fixed train route in place between Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Berlin. The collaboration with DSB and Deutsche Bahn means that we will be able to connect Norway more closely to Europe, and in the long term, this could open up direct trains to more European cities.”

Meanwhile, Michael Peterson, CEO of DB Fernverkehr, pointed to current oil costs and carbon emissions concerns as reasons why rail travel is becoming more and more popular. “If you want to experience Europe, jump on the train!” he said, noting: “With high fuel prices, long-distance trains are a good alternative to cars and planes. With the new, international route from Berlin via Copenhagen to Oslo, we are connecting Northern Europe and three capitals by train.”

And Flemming Jensen, CEO of DSB highlighted the record-breaking aspect of the connection. “We are proud that, together with Vy and DB, we will soon be able to offer one of the longest train routes in Europe,” he said. “This is not something we can achieve on our own – strong rail connections in Europe depend on strong partnerships between railway companies.”

Visitors arriving in Istanbul can explore its domes, bazaars, mosques, and busy streets after leaving the train. Luxury train travel has experienced renewed popularity in recent years, with several companies investing in slower and more exclusive travel experiences. Eurostar, Swiss rail operator SBB, and France’s SNCF Voyageurs signed a “memorandum of understanding” (MoU) on 11 May 2026, a press release revealed, declaring that the trio “are dedicated to work together on the project of potential direct connections between London and Switzerland.”

The move has been driven by strong consumer appetite for travel between the two countries, the release explained, noting that “London is the number one flight destination from Switzerland, and at the same time, there is strong customer demand for a direct rail connection to the United Kingdom.”

If the plans go ahead as intended, the connection could be in place by the early 2030s, and the rail journey time between London St Pancras and Zurich could be as little as six hours, with an even shorter connection between London and Geneva (just five and a half hours), and a London to Basel connection of five hours considered optimal, according to customer research. Such timings, from the heart of one city to another, make rail travel a viable alternative to air links between major aviation hubs, which often entail onward shuttles into town centres.

Hailing the MoU as “an important milestone in the long-term planning for the establishment of a potential new direct connection to the United Kingdom,” Eurostar said the next step would be to “analyse potential timetables and operational concepts.”

Europe’s rail networks are seeing a flurry of investment and new routes. In just one example, travellers between the Czech and Danish capitals can now enjoy a rail connection again for the first time in a decade, thanks to a new Czech Railways service launched between Prague and Copenhagen on 1 May.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has set out a blueprint for improving European rail connectivity with a focus on making travel more intuitive, seamless, and risk-free across the bloc’s network of multiple operators.

Ahead of the long-awaited rollout of a passenger service across the Emirates this year, Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE’s national railway network, has launched a nationwide safety campaign covering all seven Emirates.

Called “Safety is Care”, the campaign aims to raise awareness of safe behaviour near tracks, crossings and stations, and to introduce residents to rail travel etiquette, which is still relatively new to the UAE. The campaign will be delivered via broadcasts, digital platforms, outdoor advertising and community engagement initiatives in order to reach audiences nationwide.

Rather than relying solely on warnings and regulations, the initiative draws heavily on behavioural science and long-term cultural engagement. According to Etihad Rail, many rail-related incidents worldwide are caused by distraction, routine behaviour and a lack of awareness around tracks.

The campaign is accompanied by realistic visuals and everyday scenarios designed to be relatable rather than alarming. Schools, local communities and public institutions are also involved in the outreach effort.

“As we prepare to introduce passenger services across the UAE, it is essential that we build awareness and understanding of how to engage safely with the railway”, said Adhraa Almansoori, director of public policy and sustainability at Etihad Rail.

“This campaign is about building a culture of care and shared responsibility, ensuring that our communities, our passengers, and our employees all play a role in maintaining the highest safety standards.”

Throughout the year, passenger services will be introduced gradually in a carefully planned, phased approach designed to prioritise safety, reliability and comfort from the outset.

Once operational, the network will connect 11 cities across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Stations will be integrated with metro systems, buses, and taxis, and estimated journey times will include 57 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and one hour and 45 minutes between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah.

The broader ambitions are significant. It is projected that the network will carry 36.5 million passengers per year by 2030, cutting 8.2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually and offering a low-emission alternative to domestic flights and car travel across the Gulf.

Behind the scenes, the scale of the project remains enormous. The 900-kilometre network includes hundreds of bridges and crossings, as well as tunnels carved through mountainous terrain. Freight operations have been running on parts of the network since 2023.

Passengers can look forward to unforgettable views: endless desert plains, open skies, salt flats, industrial landscapes en route to Ruwais, and mountain scenery on the Oman stretch. This will reveal parts of the country that many residents and visitors rarely encounter from the air or on the ground.

The trains will feature first, business and economy classes, and will embody a distinctly Emirati identity. Plans are already in place for future high-speed trains between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which could reach speeds of 350 km/h.

An even more luxurious option is also being developed in partnership with the Italian company Arsenale. This is intended to recreate the golden age of rail travel on Arabian sands and has been dubbed a luxury “rail cruise”.

For now, however, the focus is on the inaugural journeys. The safety campaign is the final step before the doors open.

But by the time the station opened in 1931, fascist dictator Benito Mussolini had been in power for nine years, and the symbols of fascism, bundles of sticks portraying ancient Roman authority, had been added to the hub’s design. When Nazi Germany occupied Italy in 1943, another, even more sinister adaptation was to follow.

Beneath the station lay an ingenious mail operation, out of the way of passenger services and hidden from public view, with two platforms at ground level where post would be loaded onto trains, which were then lifted onto the upper departure levels by elevator.

For the Nazis, this hidden Binario 21 (Platform 21) became an underground human processing plant. For thousands of Italian Jews, dissidents, and opponents of fascism, the dark mail rooms and windowless post carriages would be their last glimpse of Italy before being transported to World War II death camps.

The cursed platform and its grim second function were rediscovered in 1994 by researchers from CDEC, the Fondazione Centro Di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea, a modern Jewish history foundation. Working with historical records and survivors’ testimony, they pieced together how deportees were taken by night in trucks and loaded onto shuttered carriages so crowded there was no room to sit, with no facilities for human dignity, for journeys of over 1,000 km—to the death camp at Auschwitz, Germany, or the slave labour camp at Mauthausen, Austria. Of 44,500 Jews living in Italy, at least 7,680 were exterminated, according to the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Memorial.

Milano Centrale’s Binario 21 is now a public memorial,  where the names of hundreds of deportees (those that are known) are projected, where artworks tell a tale of the indifference of their fellow humans—postal and rail workers, and daily commuters at the station, who continued their lives and their work while the holocaust was carried out. Visitors can see the two examples of the carriages into which the deportees would have been loaded—at least 20 human convoys left from the station.

Visiting the Milano Centrale today, then, is a way to bear witness to two sides of Italy and of human nature. Martin Westlake, Italian history expert and author whose book The Many Deaths of Mussolini will be published by Biteback in 2027, told Travel Tomorrow: “Binario 21, in the bowels of grandiose Milano Centrale, is a metaphor for the bombastic exterior of Mussolini’s fascism and its increasingly sinister interior.”

Similarly, Saverio Colacicco, an outreach expert at the Binario 21 or, as it is now also known, the Fondazione Memoriale della Shoah di Milano, (Milan Holocaust Memorial), says the place is as important for Italians as for tourists, representing “the chance to think of our own past — that of the Italian people — that we have, after 80 years, partly forgotten and partly erased.” He adds: “Italians haven’t taken full responsibility. But the fact that this happened in the economic capital of our country is significant. This was done by Italians and the responsibility is ours. It’s important to know that in the belly of the station you use every day to go to work or go on vacation, this space exists.”

Passengers may also receive meals, accommodation if needed, and alternative transport solutions, ensuring continuity of travel even in disrupted scenarios.

Towards more transparent and sustainable travel choices

Beyond ticketing and passenger rights, the Commission is introducing new obligations for booking platforms to ensure fair competition and transparency.

Platforms with significant market presence will be required to display travel options in a neutral manner, based on objective criteria such as price, travel time, or greenhouse gas emissions, rather than commercial agreements.

This is expected to make it easier for travellers to identify more sustainable options, supporting the EU’s broader climate objectives.

At the same time, new rules will ensure that transport operators and ticketing platforms can enter into fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory agreements, addressing long-standing concerns about restricted access to ticket distribution.

Remaining challenges and next steps

Alongside the legislative proposals, the Commission published an implementation report on the existing Rail Passenger Rights Regulation, highlighting progress made since 2023, including improved rules on bicycle carriage and better passenger information.

However, the report also points to persistent gaps, particularly the limited availability of through-tickets for cross-border journeys involving multiple operators, an issue the new package seeks to resolve.

The proposals will now be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union for negotiation under the ordinary legislative procedure.

In parallel, Member States are expected to accelerate the implementation of rules under the Intelligent Transport Systems Directive, particularly those related to sharing multimodal transport data.

If adopted, the package could mark a decisive step towards a truly integrated European rail system, making cross-border travel not only more convenient but also more competitive and sustainable.

A €700-million investment in Enterprise train services will see major upgrades to the cross-border route, ensuring reduced journey times, more departures, and enhanced facilities, coming as soon as 2028. Eight new trains will be made by Swiss manufacturer Stadler, allowing up to 16 daily departures.

The 180-km trip between Dublin and Belfast currently takes two and a quarter hours, calling at Drogheda, Dundalk, Newry, and Portadown. But, driven by an appetite for the rail connection proven since the introduction of hourly departures two years ago, with customer numbers up 40%, it’s soon to be all change for the new service.

Coinciding with the one-time steam operation’s 81^st anniversary, a partnership between Translink and Iarnród Éireann will enable the journey to be completed in under two hours, aboard new trains with a 400-seat capacity, power sockets, USB charging points, plus dining and bar areas. Accessibility will also be improved thanks to step-free interiors and unaided boarding.

A tri-mode system, which can run on electric, diesel and battery power, will ensure quieter journeys and slash carbon emissions, on the way to what will eventually be “full electrification”, the companies have said.

The initiative is to be jointly bankrolled by the Irish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive to the tune of €698 million. PeacePlus, a UK government and European Union funding program, will be contributing €165 million towards that sum.

Speaking to the press before the start of the Belfast launch event, Taoiseach Micheál Martin hailed the positive economic impacts and boost to employment that the railway development will bring to the two million people who now live in what he called the Dublin-Belfast “economic corridor.” The new service will provide “a significant new chapter for cross-border rail connectivity,” he said. He also trailed further Shared Island funding on the way for the Northern Irish network.

“These projects will bring high-frequency trains, better journey times and sustainability benefits which will simply transform our rail system for passengers and wider society across the island,” he told reporters.

O’Neill echoed that sentiment, saying the investment will bring “better connectivity” to  and “simply faster, better journeys between Belfast and Dublin.”

The Hague may have a reputation as a somewhat dull political and administrative hub. It’s the home of the Dutch government as well as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and Europol. Time Out’s UK news and features editor Ed Cunningham agrees, describing The Hague as boasting “a casual, unshouty sort of cool,” and highlighting its “phenomenal bar scene and a lively Chinatown,” as well as “a thriving seaside resort district (Scheveningen) and world-leading music festivals (Rewire), bags of Dutch royal history and spectacular works of architecture (Spui, the Pastor Van Ars Church).”

The city also boasts modern culinary delights and is easily explored by tram and on foot. But getting there by public transport from anywhere but Amsterdam has been an issue since 2021, when a direct train service from Belgium’s neighbouring capital, Brussels, was axed.

Now, though, city councillors have unanimously given the green light to a “Next Stop: Europe” plan set out by engineering consultancy firm Berenschot. The blueprint, as a first step, would bring back the Brussels connection by a simple timetable adjustment on the Rotterdam line that they report could run viably every two hours, with immediate effect. This option would easily offer access to and from other beloved European capitals like Berlin and Paris. 

A second development proposal would involve giving an open-access operator rights to develop a brand-new service by as soon as 2029, operated on the selected firm’s own rolling stock, by their own staff. The demand, proponents say, is not in question, with market analysis undertaken in 2024 showing passenger numbers could double by 2040.

The Hague’s Mayor Jan van Zanen has hailed the potential rail connection as “more than just a train service – it’s a link between people, ideas, and opportunities.” Economically, the service could boost the local economy by between €10 million and €12 million, and for the environment and green campaigners, the proposal is a no-brainer too, saving up to 1,450 tonnes of road transport carbon emissions by 2030.

Officials are hoping that the timeline for the project could be accelerated and defined, thanks to the Netherlands’ Presidency of the EU Council in three years’ time.

Wheelchair accessible, and with a seat capacity of up to 555, including 99 in first class, the ComfortJet trains offer passengers storage for 12 bikes, plus restaurants, radio-transparent windows, and, of course, Wi-Fi connection. There is even an onboard cinema to keep children entertained but with a maximum speed of 230km per hour, whipping passengers from Prague to Hamburg in just six hours and 41 minutes, it may be a struggle to fit more than a trilogy of movies in. Meanwhile, the full 1,000km Prague to Copenhagen trip can be completed in under 13 hours.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Union Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, hailed the pan-bloc rail service in 2025. He said: “Improving high-speed rail, especially across borders, is our top priority. This new line, connecting the Czech Republic, Germany, and Denmark, is a strong example of progress. And I am especially proud that it is the first of the ten pilot projects supported by the European Commission to promote new cross-border rail connections.”

In addition, Kai Wegner, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, said: “Deutsche Bahn’s new direct connection links three European capitals: Prague, Berlin and Copenhagen. This will strengthen Berlin as a hub in Europe. The new direct rail connection is also an important component in decarbonising the transport sector, since it will offer more green options for people travelling to and from Berlin.”

Like Copenhagen, Berlin is now offering visitors rewards and incentives for greener travel choices and contributions to sustainable tourism, via its “BerlinPay” scheme.

Although official numbers have not yet been shared, the state railway expected another 23 million passengers to travel on Tuesday, 5 May, with 2,225 extra train services planned to navigate on the final day of the May Day holiday. The railway’s official booking platform shows that Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen were among the most popular options.

Aside from the high passenger volume, the railway also noted that the system has operated safely and smoothly, partly due to the extra services that had been added over the weekend.

The railway was not the only means of transportation to score well during the May Day holiday in China. Overall, 1.52 billion cross-regional trips were made during the weekend, with many people choosing to travel by car. Waterway and air traffic were also projected to increase, although official data have not yet been communicated at the time of writing.

May Day holiday

Traditionally, the May Day holiday is one of China’s most popular public holiday periods of the year. According to the state-run China Global Television Network, in 2026, the Chinese moved away from some of the most crowded landmarks and went looking for “meaningful, hands-on cultural encounters.”

“This year’s Government Work Report called for promoting high-quality development of the cultural and tourism industry and expanding integrated formats spanning culture, tourism, sports and commerce.  The policy push is now being echoed across the country, with dozens of provinces and major cities rolling out new models and consumption scenarios at scale, laying a solid foundation for growth in China’s cultural and tourism market. As consumption shifts from sightseeing to immersive experiences, travellers are staying longer and spending more per capita, underscoring a broader transformation in China’s tourism consumption model,” CGTN writes.

Intangible cultural heritage experiences in Suzhou, indoor ice-climbing in Chengdu, paper making in Jingxian County, the Jiangsu Football City League, and immersive activities such as fruit picking and hiking were among the strongest climbers in terms of popularity.
