The swing creates an experience that combines adventure and mountain views. Visitors sit on saddle-style seats attached to a metal structure inspired by an Alpine ibex, before being secured with safety equipment. A system of cables and pulleys then pulls the riders backwards until they are suspended at a 90-degree angle above the platform. When the mechanism is released, the swing moves forward over the valley, creating the sensation of flying above the Swiss Alps.

The attraction has already attracted visitors looking for a new type of mountain experience. Alexandra Henchoz, 37, tested the swing with her husband and 10-year-old daughter and admitted she was nervous before starting the ride. “I had a bit of a pit in my stomach” before being strapped in, she said. However, after the swing started moving, she described the experience as “incredible” and added: “You feel like a bird flying.” Other visitors also highlighted the combination of fear and excitement, with 70-year-old Marc Truffer saying the experience was frightening but that the view afterwards was magnificent.

While the swing offers an adrenaline-filled activity for travellers, its purpose goes beyond entertainment. The attraction is part of a wider strategy by Alpine resorts to reduce their dependence on winter tourism. Martin Deburaux, head of the Villars-Gryon-Diablerets ski area, explained that the resort is working to create more activities that are not linked to snow conditions. “We are really trying to diversify our offering,” he said.

The need for diversification is becoming increasingly important for mountain destinations. Ski resorts across Europe are facing challenges linked to rising temperatures and changing snowfall patterns. Although Villars has experienced strong winter seasons in recent years, the resort is preparing for a future where traditional skiing may become less predictable. The new swing provides an attraction that can continue operating during warmer months and allows the resort to make better use of its mountain infrastructure.

Currently, Villars welcomes more than 700,000 visitors during the winter season, while summer attracts around 100,000 people. The resort aims to significantly increase its summer visitor numbers in the coming years by offering a wider range of activities. Hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor experiences are already attracting visitors, and the Balanc’Air swing adds another reason for travellers to visit outside the ski season.

Passengers receive concierge support before travel, including information gathering about each dog’s dietary, social and environmental needs. On board, dogs have access to services such as calming aids, treats, wellness amenities and dedicated attention from trained staff.

Since launching, Bark Air has expanded its network across the United States and Europe. The company flies to destinations including Dublin, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Stockholm. Fares start at around $9,900 for a dog and one accompanying passenger on transatlantic routes. To bring two humans, you’ll need to purchase two tickets,” Bark Air notes.

The centre focuses on preventing the harmful use and abuse of digital technologies rather than restricting access through bans. According to the organisations behind the project, digital tools have become an essential part of young people’s daily lives, making it necessary to teach them how to use these platforms in a more conscious way. Florence’s Youth Policies Councillor Letizia Perini explains that technology itself is not the problem, but that young people need support in finding a balance.

“Digital technologies are part of young people’s everyday lives and represent an extraordinary opportunity. Precisely for this reason we have a duty to support them in making increasingly conscious use of these tools, helping them to find a balance between the time spent online and the time devoted to relationships, sport, culture and shared experiences,” says Perini.

The Discover centre will welcome young people between the ages of 10 and 25 and will provide different types of support. The services will include guidance programmes, a listening desk and workshops focused on media education and social interaction. Activities will encourage young people to spend time away from screens through board games, manual activities, group work and other shared experiences.

The project will also involve the wider community by connecting schools, youth centres, sports clubs, libraries and local organisations. Parents and educators will be able to access the centre as well, as the initiative aims to create a wider network around young people’s digital habits. In more complex situations, such as social withdrawal, isolation or psychological difficulties, local health services will be able to provide additional support.

Ester Macrì, President of Retesviluppo, says the centre represents a different approach from the restrictions introduced in some other countries. “We will not simply be imposing bans, but an innovative approach based on two pillars: guided disconnection and the promotion of conscious use of technology, to turn young people from passive consumers into active protagonists of their time,” she explains.

The opening of the centre comes at a time when governments around the world are debating how to protect children from possible negative effects linked to excessive social media use. Australia became the first country to introduce a nationwide ban on social media for users under 16. The measure requires platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat to prevent underage users from creating or maintaining accounts.

The Australian approach has sparked international debate about the role of governments in regulating children’s access to online platforms. Supporters argue that restrictions are needed to protect young people’s mental health and wellbeing, while critics have raised concerns about privacy, age verification and whether teenagers will find ways to bypass the rules.

France has followed a similar direction and approved legislation banning social media access for children under 15. The measure, which will be introduced in stages from 2026 to 2027, requires users to verify their age before accessing social media platforms. French authorities argue that stronger protections are needed because of growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on children.

Italy has chosen a different path by focusing on prevention instead of prohibition. Rather than removing young people from online spaces, the Discover centre aims to give them the knowledge and support needed to navigate digital platforms responsibly. The project reflects a wider European discussion about how societies can protect younger generations while recognising that technology remains an important part of modern life.

Alaska continues to attract growing interest among cruise travellers. “Alaska continues to capture the imagination of our guests in the Benelux more than ever. Refurbished MSC Poesia returns to Alaska

The 2028 season will also mark the ship’s first full Alaska deployment following a major refurbishment. Among the most significant additions is the MSC Yacht Club, the cruise line’s luxury “ship-within-a-ship” concept, featuring 69 suites, 24-hour butler and concierge service, a private restaurant and lounge, an exclusive sundeck with whirlpools, and a dedicated grill restaurant and bar.

The refurbishment also introduced two new speciality dining venues: Butcher’s Cut, an American-style steakhouse, and Kaito Sushi Bar, serving Japanese-inspired cuisine. Guests will also find an upgraded MSC Aurea Spa, an enhanced Technogym-powered fitness centre, a gentleman’s barber and the Top 15 Exclusive Solarium for Aurea guests.

“Following her recent refurbishment, MSC Poesia will once again deliver the signature MSC Cruises experience, featuring modernised facilities and the addition of the exclusive MSC Yacht Club, a product that is highly appreciated by our Benelux guests,” Van den Steen underlined.

Glaciers, wildlife and coastal communities

The seven-night itineraries have been designed to showcase some of Alaska’s best-known natural attractions and coastal communities. Ketchikan is renowned for its fishing heritage and Alaska Native culture, while Icy Strait Point offers wildlife encounters and Indigenous-owned tourism experiences. Juneau provides access to glaciers and outdoor activities, and Victoria combines historic architecture with waterfront scenery.

Cruise Director Matías Chimicz said Alaska offers guests unforgettable moments both ashore and at sea. “Witnessing Alaska’s glaciers up close, with stunning scenery unfolding around every turn,” is among the experiences that leave the greatest impression on travellers, he said.

He also highlighted the opportunity to spot whales, orcas, bald eagles, bears, deer, otters and harbour seals, noting that guests have even enjoyed whale sightings directly from the ship during the season.

Beyond the destination itself, passengers can enjoy live entertainment, international dining, family facilities and wellness experiences on board, including Dirty Dancing: In Concert, the live-to-film production featuring live singers, dancers and musicians.

Bookings are already available for MSC Cruises’ 2027 Alaska season, which runs from 26 April to 27 September 2027. Between its Alaska deployments, MSC Poesia will also operate MSC Grand Voyage sailings through the Panama Canal between Miami and Seattle.

Under the Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco Use 2024-2027, the new laws promise to prohibit smoking by under-18-year-olds, bring vape and shisha pipe rules in line with those governing tobacco, crack down on marketing activities, and increase the number of places designated as smoke-free areas.

It is the last point that is causing the most debate. The extent of the proposed smoke-free zones is sweeping, from eateries to beauty spots and sports centres, and beyond. Visitors to Spain should be aware that, if greenlit, the laws will mean no smoking or use of e-cigarettes on “the terraces of bars, restaurants and other hospitality establishments, sea and river beaches, public swimming pools, sports facilities, national parks, work vehicles, except when used exclusively for personal purposes, as well as venues where public events are held.”

What’s more, simply standing outside the establishment and lighting up will no longer be possible, thanks to protection zones of 15 metres around cultural centres, hospitals, libraries, museums, playgrounds, schools, sports facilities, and other public buildings.

Amid fears that smokers will stay away from hospitality venues instead of going out and spending, Spanish stakeholder groups have issued criticism of the proposals, arguing they “would ⁠have very limited effectiveness, as it could drive smokers indoors to places such as private homes, thereby increasing exposure to ​second-hand smoke.”

But, pointing to Spain’s 50,000 annual smoking-related deaths, Health Minister Mónica García explained: “Anyone who wants to have a coffee or enjoy their leisure time freely on a terrace should be able to do so without the smoke from nearby tables becoming part of the menu.”

Holidaymakers in Spain should be aware that, if the reforms come into force, the penalties for offenders will range from €200 to €600,000, depending on the breach. It is important to note that for the first time, it is not only suppliers who can fall foul of the rules. Under 18s who consume tobacco or tobacco-related products can be ordered to perform community service, or be fined too, upwards of €200, which could send a significant part of the holiday budget up in smoke.

Leg edema

Leg edema, or swollen ankles or lower legs, is caused by fluid build-up in the body, and is very common, occurring in around 97% of long-haul flyers (journeys over seven hours), according to a May 2021 clinical trial review.

It is remaining sedentary for long periods that reduces blood flow to the legs, so this side-effect of flying can be minimised by simply moving around during flights, finding regular opportunities to walk around the plane, and to keep ankles mobile, and raise and lower toes and lower legs, even when sitting. Many aircraft configured for long-haul flights now provide wellness areas for passengers to get their steps and movement in.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)

Blood clots can break off and travel through the bloodstream, causing deep vein blockages or pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal.

Stay aware of how tight clothing or jewellery feels, whether any swelling is one-sided, or stays indented when pressed, and of temperature levels. Some people at high risk of blood clots are recommended to try compression socks, and all flyers should keep an eye out for blood clot symptoms, such as swelling in only one limb, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

If a blood clot is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought.

Ear popping

Babies are often heard crying on descent and ascent phases of flights, and this is to do with the way human bodies regulate pressure through the ears, which is easier for adults to manage.

Dr Asimah Hanif, a general practitioner with the United Kingdom’s NHS GP, has worked with travel insurance provider Staysure to raise awareness of common health issues that can be triggered by flying, and to share tips on how to minimise them. “Ear popping is quite common and is caused by changes in the cabin pressure which affects something called the eustachian tube,” Hanif explains.

As pressure changes within an aircraft cabin, the eustachian tube, connecting the middle ear to the throat, tries to balance the ear pressure by draining fluid and drawing air. Blockages and pain from the stretched or flattened eardrum can be felt by anyone on a flight as a result of this process, but adults can try frequent swallowing, yawning, and chewing to help relieve the discomfort.

For stubborn cases, Hanif suggests gently trying the Valsalva maneuver “where you take a breath, close your mouth, pinch your nose and then gently blow out.” This can help to make the ears “pop,” alleviating the feeling of fullness.

Ear pressure, discomfort, and residual tinnitus from air travel should resolve within 24 hours of flying, so if it does not, a doctor’s visit should be the next step.

Headaches

Headaches are not an unusual aspect of flying and can be caused by the reduced oxygen in the cabin, pressure changes affecting the sinuses, as well as other factors that tend to occur during travel, such as disturbed sleep and stress.

While not all of these are in flyers’ control, a top culprit for headaches is dehydration, and drinking plenty of water is something all passengers can do. Hanif says that aside from doing everything possible to avoid colds and promote health before your departure date, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol and coffee during flights, can make a real difference.

Dry skin, dry eyes, a cough

“Cabin air has low humidity compared with normal indoor environments which can increase fluid loss and contribute to dehydration,” explains Hanif. “That’s why people often find that they get dry eyes, dry skin and even a dry airway that can lead to a tickly cough.”

Again, staying hydrated is the answer here and eye drops, topical creams, or balms can help with the symptoms of dryness. Avoiding creams with strong fragrances is a courtesy to other flyers.

Dizziness or light-headedness

While these symptoms can also come from dehydration, fatigue, or even too much alcohol, dizziness and light-headedness can also be caused by anxiety, which for some people can be an unwelcome companion on a daily basis, let alone during travel and flights.

Some airlines offer services to acclimatise and assist anxious flyers, which could provide benefits here. Unless prescribed by a doctor, avoid self-medication with alcohol or drugs, which can make matters worse. Move slowly and cautiously on board to prevent falls and injury.

The campaign follows several incidents in which young wolves displayed unusually low levels of fear towards humans. According to the Danish Centre for Environment and Energy (DCE), observations around Oksbøl in May indicated that at least one young wolf was exhibiting “significantly reduced shyness” and approaching people.

Authorities stress that there have been no recorded wolf attacks on humans in Denmark and that the current behaviour does not represent an immediate risk of aggressive attacks.

However, visitors are being encouraged to understand how to behave during an encounter, particularly as the Oksbøl area attracts significant numbers of tourists staying in summer cottages and campsites.

Tourists told to stand still and maintain eye contact

Government advice recommends that anyone encountering a wolf should remain still and maintain eye contact. If the animal does not leave, people can shout, clap their hands and wave their arms to discourage it from approaching further.

Visitors should not follow wolves or turn their backs on an approaching animal. Children under 10 are also advised to be accompanied by an adult in the Oksbøl area.

In the unlikely event of an attack, the guidance tells people to defend themselves using kicks, blows or available objects. If a wolf attacks another person or a dog, authorities recommend directing resistance towards the animal’s hindquarters.

Varde’s second deputy mayor, Sandie Eis Ravn, said the information campaign was introduced following requests from local businesses to ensure visitors know what to do if they encounter one of the animals.

“If you are visiting somewhere and you know there is a wolf in the nearby forest, [it is important] to make sure you have the right code of conduct when you meet this creature,” she told The Guardian.

49 wolves recorded in Denmark

Wolves disappeared from Denmark after the country’s last known wolf was shot in 1813, but began returning naturally in 2012 after an absence of almost two centuries. By 2017, the first wolf pack had established itself in western Jutland.

According to monitoring by the Natural History Museum of Aarhus, 49 wolves have been recorded in Denmark this year. The population is concentrated in Jutland, with monitoring identifying 10 territories, including seven pairs with pups born in 2025, three pairs without pups and one territorial male.

Wildlife experts believe the behaviour observed near Oksbøl involves young animals becoming accustomed to human presence.

Peter Sunde, professor of wildlife ecology at Aarhus University, said at least two young wolves had been observed approaching humans during the winter and spring of 2026, with markedly reduced flight distances.

Such behaviour can develop when young wolves are repeatedly exposed to humans. Authorities are therefore asking residents and tourists not to approach the animals or leave food that could attract them, in an effort to prevent future generations from becoming accustomed to people.

The warning comes as European countries adapt to the recovery of wolf populations. Wolves remain protected under European legislation, although their protection status under the Bern Convention was downgraded in 2025 from “strictly protected” to “protected”, giving governments greater flexibility in managing populations.

For Denmark, where wolves have only recently re-established themselves, authorities are seeking to balance their conservation with public safety as humans and the growing wolf population increasingly share the same landscapes.

The necessity for such a facility has increased in tandem with the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in the capital. According to The Brussels Times, Brussels is currently the only European city with a population of over one million that does not have a permanent outdoor public swimming pool.

Plans for the swimming complex were approved by the Brussels regional government in 2022 following a proposal by Pascal Smet (then Brussels Secretary of State for Urbanism) as part of the wider transformation of the historic Abattoir site in Cureghem.

Over the years, the former slaughterhouse has evolved into a bustling hub for markets, food production, and cultural events. The underground Cureghem Cellars also hosted many memorable events before closing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Smet said the new swimming complex would “make a huge difference to the quality of life for thousands of Brusseleers”. However, despite widespread support for the pool, its construction was put on hold for years while the authorities finalised the legal, financial and operational details. The project involves the Brussels-Capital Region, the Flemish Community Commission (VGC), the municipality of Anderlecht and the Brussels Urban Development Corporation.

Things are finally moving again. Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Renewal Ans Persoons (Vooruit) announced that the tender is set to be launched following approval from the regional government.

“Cooling down should not be a privilege for those who have the space or the means,” said Persoons. “The city is only getting hotter, so this project is becoming increasingly important,” she told Bruzz.

Construction, however, is not expected to begin before 2029 at the earliest.

The project is being developed under a DBFMO (Design, Build, Finance, Maintain and Operate) contract, a public-private partnership, under which the successful bidder will be responsible for every aspect of the project, from design and financing to operation and maintenance. The contract is expected to be awarded in 2028.

Around €4 million has already been secured from the VGC and the Brussels-Capital Region, and preparatory work, including reinforcing the Manufakture roof, has been completed.

The pools will be located on top of Manufakture, a new food production hub that is currently under construction on the Abattoir site. The refrigerated rooms used by the businesses below, which naturally generate heat and energy as they keep food cold, will not go to waste and will be used to help warm the pool water.

Plans include a 25-metre indoor pool for schools and sports clubs, a smaller teaching pool, and an additional 25-metre outdoor pool, which will be open throughout the summer. The complex will also feature recreational and relaxation areas with views across the Brussels skyline.

Once operational, the facility is expected to be open for at least 3,500 hours over 50 weeks of the year, welcoming schools, sports clubs, and members of the public. Admission prices will be in line with other public pools in Brussels, with reduced rates for schools and certain groups.

With almost 400,000 visitors expected annually, it could become one of the capital’s busiest public facilities.

Beyond Anderlecht

While Brussels, historically, had many outdoor swimming spots, these gradually disappeared during the second half of the 20^th century, leaving residents largely reliant on private facilities and sports clubs. A situation unlikely to change before 2030.

This is not the first proposal, and previous proposals have proved less successful. Plans for a natural swimming pond in Neerpede have stalled due to objections from local residents regarding potential noise and damage to wildlife. Meanwhile, an ambitious 350-metre pool project at Quai des Péniches was abandoned due to a lack of funding. The city and Port of Brussels are now considering a more modest alternative: a single supervised swimming lane in the canal.

Until then, the nearest options remain outside the capital, including Renipont beach in Lasne, IJsevijver in Overijse, Hofstade beach, and the provincial domain in Kessel-Lo.

Developers in Portugal appear set to cash in on the 2030 event, as plans have been unveiled for a new 80-hectare attraction to be built near the historic town of Santarém, just 40 minutes from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

According to developers Zul Virani and JFA Group, the new theme park, to be named “Viva Mundo,” would be split into six areas and boast 28 football-based experiences, such as a 4D cinema, a log flume, dual “racing” rollercoasters, and a Las Vegas-style sphere.

Billed as “the world’s first destination dedicated to football” and a place “Made for every football fan” where there will be “No flags. No clubs. A space where the only identity that matters is a love of the game,” the park is expected to cost €450 million and to be ready by the end of April 2029, well before the World Cup kick-off in June.

Santarém, an historic city with a multicultural past and a vibrant, stylish local food scene, is sometimes referred to as the capital of Portuguese Gothic, thanks to the proliferation of Gothic architecture spanning nearly all styles and eras in the town. The town is built on a prominent limestone and sandstone bluff along the right bank of the Tagus (Tejo) River. Its cliffs and valleys boast geological records from the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, making it a significant environmental site.

Critics of the plan have raised concerns over an alleged lack of transparency in how the land was transferred and the privatisation of public community space, with protests from citizens’ groups at official project meetings pointing to potential strain on the local environment, existing infrastructure, traffic, and housing in the Ribatejo region.

Despite that historical and environmental sensitivity, feasibility studies for the football theme park have already been undertaken, and the project has progressed to the design stage, with a master plan approved by local authorities, amid expectations that the park might attract 1.5 million visitors a year and generate between 800 and 1,000 direct jobs.

Renderings reveal a vast main entrance concourse, spanned by an elliptical arch that frames a huge golden monument in the shape of the World Cup itself. The concourse is shown lined with neon-filled retail spaces, while the park’s six proposed sections include “Memory” (where a shop and museum will showcase footballing history and memorabilia); “Flavours,” where refreshments and restaurants will be located; and a ”Fans” zone, intended to capture the atmosphere of match day. A 300-room hotel is planned too, allowing fans to stay on-site, Disney-style.

The complete design is forecast to be ready by January 2027, and the developers are seeking a licence to break ground by the end of the following month.
