For many Gen Z respondents, these so-called psychic moments are linked to simple daily instincts rather than anything mystical. The Talker Research survey found that common examples include knowing when something feels “off,” sensing when someone is not telling the truth, or feeling when it is the right time to leave a situation. Around 33 percent said they can sense when something is wrong, while 28 percent mentioned detecting dishonesty. Another 26 percent reported having a gut feeling about when to walk away from something, which they later believed was the correct decision.

Across generations, intuition appears to be a regular part of decision-making, even if people describe it differently. The survey found that about 71 percent of Americans rely on intuition at least sometimes, while only around 11 percent say they do not believe in it at all. On average, respondents reported having about 18 moments per year that they considered “psychic” or strongly intuitive. Gen Z stood out with roughly two such moments per month, compared with about one per month among baby boomers.

These intuitive experiences also appear in practical daily situations. Around 25 percent of respondents said they had a bad feeling before something happened, while a similar percentage reported simply “knowing” an outcome in advance. About 24 percent said they thought of someone just before that person contacted them. Other examples included 22 percent sensing that someone could not be trusted, and 19 percent saying they knew what someone was going to say before they said it.

Differences between generations also appeared in specific areas where intuition was strongest. Gen X respondents were the most likely to say they could correctly predict outcomes, at around 21 percent. Millennials reported a stronger connection between dreams and intuition, also at about 21 percent. When it came to dating, both Gen Z and millennials reported similar levels of intuition at around 14 percent. Financial intuition was also shared across generations, with Gen Z and baby boomers showing similar confidence at about 14 percent.

Adam Dickinson, a former FBI intelligence analyst and current intuition advisor, said that intuition is often connected to the brain recognising patterns based on previous experiences. He explained that intuition usually feels calm and steady, while anxiety tends to feel repetitive, urgent, and stressful. Many respondents admitted they struggled to tell the difference between the two. According to the survey, around 35 percent said they were not confident they could separate gut feelings from anxiety.

The growing interest in intuition is also linked to wider social and online trends. Content related to astrology, tarot cards, manifestation, and similar beliefs has become increasingly visible on social media platforms such as TikTok. At the same time, many respondents said therapy and mental health support had helped them better understand their emotions and internal reactions. However, technology use, including AI and constant online activity, was also seen by many participants as reducing trust in personal instincts.

“This is the first study to test several of the major hypotheses for human handedness in a single framework,” explains Thomas A. Püschel, one of the study authors and a professor of anthropology at the University of Oxford.

A paper published in PLOS Biology journal reveals how the team looked at “handedness” data from over 2,000 individuals, across 41 species of monkeys and apes. Using Bayesian models, combining existing biological knowledge and genetic and physical observations, they tested various evolutionary explanations for handedness. The factors ranged from diet to tool use, to social structure, habitat, body, and brain size.

The two variables that made the most difference to the modelling were bipedalism and brain size, leading the researchers to set out a two-stage explanation for human handedness.

First, humans began walking upright on two legs, which freed up their hands for use other than self-propulsion. This in turn meant humans who developed “specialized hand use” for transporting items, communicating, or using tools were more likely to survive and pass on their genes.

The scientists note that other tree-dwelling primates also exhibit stronger preferences for using one hand over the other, which they say is because propulsion through branches requires such precision and coordination. Humans simply began using their specialist hand differently when they no longer needed it for getting around.

The real leap however came when Homo sapiens emerged, with far bigger brains than their ancestors. Homo sapiens were far more likely to be right-handed than Homo erectus and Neanderthals, the researchers say.

Still to explore though are: the reason why left-handedness can still be found at all in human populations; and the extent of the impact of “education” and culture on right-handedness rates. In many human communities, right-handedness was conceived of as socially preferable, and children who exhibited a preference for using their left hand used to be forced to “learn” how to use their right hand instead.

The research team also suggests further studies on other species of animal to ascertain whether other bipedal creatures such as kangaroos or parrots, who show a leaning for one “hand” over the other, evolved the tendency in the same way.

Argentina is currently investigating whether birdwatching tours in its southernmost reaches were the source of a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius. As of 13 May, according to the most recent at the time of writing Disease Outbreak update from the World Health Organisation, a total of 11 cases, including three deaths, had been reported (case fatality ratio 27%). Eight cases were laboratory-confirmed for Andes virus (ANDV) infection, the WHO said, two were probable, and one case remained inconclusive.

The disease initially presents very much like a case of the flu, but, depending on the type, can develop into a pulmonary syndrome that fills the lungs with fluid and is fatal in 40% of cases. It can also become a haemorrhagic, renal syndrome with a death rate between one and 15%, the Centers for Disease Control say.

Usually acquired by breathing particles of rodent droppings, the WHO has said, “current evidence suggests human-to-human transmission onboard the ship.” Panic levels spiked around the time that person-to-person spread appeared to have infected an air steward who had only been in contact with one of the cruise passengers for a very short time. On social media networks, chatter about another post-COVID-19 virus, and its potential world-shattering consequences became rife.

That panic appears to have subsided, and the WHO currently assesses the public health risk for those who were onboard the cruise ship as moderate, and the Global health risk level as low. The reasoning is that the ship’s environment put people in closer quarters than the externally controlled environment, the ship’s passengers’ average age is higher than the global population, and that viral sequencing suggests the outbreak stemmed from a “single zoonotic spillover event.”

But for travel stakeholders in Ushuaia and the Patagonian region, damage has already been done. Tourism by Antarctic cruise passengers from Ushuaia has grown 252% in the last decade, but, as authorities continue to look into the outbreak, travel agents have reported to The Independent a drop in bookings for the next summer season. While the figures will not reach the global trillions in lost GDP that the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat attributes to COVID, for Ushuaia, where tourism accounts for 25% of city revenue, any reputational impact could be grave— especially given the way the region is already suffering under national government policies that have incentivised domestic tourists to go abroad.

As the former tourism secretary of Ushuaia, Julio Lovece, points out: “There’s concern because our main attraction is clean and pure landscapes, the imaginary idea of the end of the world.” Stakeholders in Ushuaia will be hoping his turn of phrase is not an ill omen.

Uber and boat booking platform Click&Boat are joining forces, meaning Uber users will get to book a boat ride from their usual app just as easily as a normal taxi.

With a fleet of some 55,000 ships, Click&Boat has quite the expertise when it comes to boat rentals. According to the company, the aim is to make sailing accessible to as many people as possible, even those without a license or technical knowledge, and to integrate boating into everyday mobility habits.

In 2024, Uber and Click&Boat already teamed up during the Olympics to offer free river cruises on the Seine River. At the time, customers could book a free 1-hour trip with a skipper on an electric vessel in order to see the city from a different perspective.

How does it work?

When booking through the Uber app, customers will be able to choose from a catalogue of themed experiences, such as sunset sails, water sports, appetisers at sea, or day trips to hidden coves. The collaboration will be launching across 23 coastal cities in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Croatia, including Split, Dubrovnik, Saint-Tropez, Nice, Mallorca, Barcelona, and Ibiza.

Through Uber, travellers will have access to a range of daily rentals with a skipper. Not only is the one-day format the most popular among boaters according to Click&Boat, but it is also the perfect way to enjoy the water peacefully.

Customers who book an Uber Boat through the app will get to enjoy the same prices as those applied by the Click&Boat platform, which currently shows fees starting from €250 to €3,000 per day. However, Uber One members get 10% worth in credits when booking a boat ride.

It is not the first time Uber has offered boat journeys through their app. In 2020, Uber and Thames Clippers launched the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service. The river bus serves 24 piers across London and can be booked starting from £6.20 per ride, while the service is also available to Oyster Card users. Uber Yacht was previously available in popular destinations such as Ibiza, Greece, and Venice.

More than 1,700 passengers and crew had initially been asked to remain onboard as a precaution after dozens of people reported gastrointestinal symptoms. The ship, carrying 1,233 passengers, mainly from the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as 514 crew members, arrived in the French port on 13 May and was held there pending the outcome of medical tests.

At the peak of the situation, around 80 individuals experienced stomach-related symptoms, with the highest number of cases reported while the ship was docked in Brest earlier in the week.

French health authorities have since clarified that the situation is under control. The illness affecting passengers has been identified as a mild viral infection with no serious consequences reported.

Initial concerns pointed to a possible outbreak of norovirus, a highly contagious form of gastroenteritis commonly associated with cruise ships. However, tests ruled this out, and further investigations are ongoing. Food poisoning has not been excluded as a possible cause.

Passengers showing symptoms have been instructed to isolate in their cabins, while those without symptoms have now been allowed to leave the vessel.

Death of elderly passenger unrelated

The incident was further complicated by the death of an elderly passenger during the voyage. Authorities confirmed that the 92-year-old man died of a heart attack before the ship reached Brest, and that his death is unrelated to the gastrointestinal illnesses reported onboard.

Earlier reports had raised concerns about a possible link between the death and the outbreak, but this has since been dismissed.

No link to hantavirus cases on other vessels

The situation also prompted comparisons with a separate health incident involving the MV Hondius, where a suspected hantavirus cluster had been reported after a voyage departing Argentina. French health officials stressed that there is no connection between the two cases.

While gastrointestinal infections such as gastroenteritis are relatively common and typically mild, hantavirus is rare and significantly more severe.

During the confinement period in Bordeaux, enhanced sanitation measures were implemented across the ship. These included intensified cleaning protocols, assisted service in dining areas, and reinforced hygiene guidance for passengers and crew, such as regular handwashing and prompt reporting of symptoms.

In a statement, the cruise operator said it had implemented health and safety protocols in line with public health procedures and was working closely with local authorities.

The Ambition, which departed from the Shetland Islands on 6 May and called at Belfast and Liverpool before arriving in France, is expected to resume its itinerary towards Spain once clearance is granted.

Varna presents health tourism as an investment in quality of life

Opening the summit, organisers and hosts underlined the need to connect sectors that too often operate separately. A greeting message from EU Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva set the tone for the discussions, highlighting the importance of natural resources, prevention and innovation in shaping the future of European health tourism.

Speaking on behalf of Varna Municipality, Deputy Mayor Snezhana Apostolova welcomed participants to Golden Sands and St Constantine and Helena, describing them as “places where sea, minerals, natural resources and modern tourism infrastructure create a unique environment for recovery, wellness and quality living.”

“Today, tourism is far more than an industry. It is an investment in the future, in quality of life, and in the sustainable development of destinations,” Apostolova said.

She added that Varna’s ambition is to be recognised as a destination combining “medical expertise, spa and wellness traditions, exceptional natural resources, and a high quality tourism product.”

Bulgaria welcomes Europe’s health tourism community

Assoc. Prof. Dr Siyka Katsarova, President of ESPA and BUBSPA, highlighted Bulgaria’s natural assets and the importance of evidence-based health tourism.

“I’m really happy to welcome you in my home country, Bulgaria, one of the oldest countries in the world, and to open the first edition of the European Health Exchange Summit,” Katsarova said.

She also underlined the international dimension of the event, noting the presence of “28 countries, 200 guests, 100 foreigners, and most of them first time” participants. Addressing the audience, she added: “Stay here, exchange your opinions, find new contacts, and enjoy the nature.”

EU policy focuses on sustainable and resilient tourism ecosystems

The morning plenary then turned to EU policy and cooperation opportunities. Victoria Petrova, Senior Expert at the European Commission’s DG MOVE, presented the Commission’s work on sustainable and resilient tourism ecosystems.

Petrova explained that the EU does not make tourism decisions directly, but plays a coordination role across Member States, regions and authorities. “We coordinate the work of the European Member States, of the regions and the local authorities,” she said.

She added that the Commission is particularly active in areas that are crucial for tourism, including “digital economy, mobility, climate, taxation and business.”

Petrova highlighted the importance of fact-based policymaking, including the use of data from the Joint Research Centre to identify tourism concentrations and development potential at the regional and municipal levels. She also pointed to EU funding opportunities for tourism SMEs, climate adaptation, innovation and destination management, noting that tourism companies can tap into several European programmes.

Health tourism, Petrova said, has significant potential in Europe, particularly in the context of the longevity economy, the 55-plus population and people requiring accessible health-related services.

She also referred to future priorities, including skills development, data, technology, multimodal connectivity and closer cooperation with international organisations. One of the Commission’s objectives, she explained, is to support the sector with tools to better manage destinations, develop skills and diversify tourism flows.

Regional development as a foundation for health tourism

Former Czech Minister for Regional Development Petr Kulhánek argued that spa and medical tourism cannot be treated as isolated activities. Drawing on his experience in Karlovy Vary, he said successful health tourism depends on cooperation between local authorities, tourism boards, medical providers, research organisations, businesses and residents.

According to Kulhánek, public investment in spa regions improves both the visitor experience and the quality of life of local communities. He also stressed that EU cohesion instruments and operational programmes have supported digitalisation, energy efficiency, research and innovation in spa destinations, even if the sector is still seeking stronger recognition within European healthcare systems.

Life sciences and natural healing resources

Ass. Prof. Dr Milena Angelova, member of the European Economic and Social Committee and rapporteur of the EU Life Sciences Strategy, called for a more holistic understanding of health.

She argued that Europe’s natural healing heritage, including mineral waters, therapeutic muds and climate therapy, should be integrated into the life sciences agenda alongside biotechnology, medicine and research infrastructure.

Angelova said medical spas and climate health resorts can contribute to prevention, rehabilitation, mental health and healthy ageing. She also called for stronger evidence, research, and data to support the sector’s claims and help natural therapies gain greater visibility in European health policy.

Rural communities at the heart of health tourism

The rural dimension of health tourism was addressed by Anja Fortuna of the Rural Pact Support Office. She noted that many spa destinations are located in rural areas and said closer cooperation with local communities is essential.

Farmers, craftsmen, local producers and residents, she argued, can all contribute to extending the value of health tourism beyond hotels and medical facilities.

Fortuna presented the Rural Pact as a platform to break silos and connect local, regional, national and European stakeholders. She encouraged health tourism actors to join the network and engage with rural communities to strengthen resilience, prosperity and local identity.

A European opportunity for prevention and regional transformation

Throughout the morning, speakers returned to the same central idea: Europe has unique assets in health tourism, but the sector needs stronger coordination, better evidence, clearer communication and closer alignment with EU priorities.

For Bulgaria, the summit offered an opportunity to present its mineral waters, Black Sea resorts, medical expertise and natural resources as part of this wider European conversation. For Europe, it underlined that health tourism is increasingly about prevention, healthy ageing, sustainability and regional transformation.

As the discussions in Varna made clear, the future of health tourism will depend not only on treatments and facilities, but on how destinations connect science, policy, nature, local communities and long-term wellbeing.

This broader strategy is also reflected in Azerbaijan’s tourism performance. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the country welcomed more than 2.57 million foreign visitors in 2025, representing a 2.1% increase year on year, while international visitor spending reached ₼3.4 billion.

These figures underline the growing attractiveness of Azerbaijan as an international destination and support its ambition to diversify further into health, wellness and medical tourism.

Participation in the summit also allowed Azerbaijan to gain insights into European approaches to health tourism, including quality standards, certification mechanisms and destination management models.

As the sector evolves towards more evidence-based and personalised health experiences, aligning with European benchmarks is seen as a key step in strengthening Azerbaijan’s competitiveness and credibility on the international stage.

What started off as a normal cruise on 1 April 2026, carrying 147 passengers and crew from 23 countries, has quickly turned into a global headliner and health concern. Over the course of a few weeks, the MV Hondius – which set out from Argentina – has become the scene of a deadly hantavirus outbreak.

After the first hantavirus cases had been confirmed, the ship first anchored off Cape Verde before heading to Tenerife in order to start evacuating the remaining passengers. Spanish health minister Monica Garcia Gomez, interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and minister for territorial policy Angel Victor Torres Pérez, as well as the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, supervised the delicate operation when the ship arrived on 10 May 2026.

Approximately two days later, on the night of 11 on 12 May 2026, the last evacuees arrived in the Netherlands. The remaining passengers – four Australians, one Briton, and one New Zealander  – and the crew members – 17 Filipinos, a Dutch national, and a German – will stay at a quarantine facility near the Eindhoven airbase before being repatriated to their respective countries.

However, the MV Hondius still had people on board when it left Tenerife. 25 crew members and two medical staff will accompany the ship to Rotterdam. Upon its arrival – expected on Sunday 17 May 2026 – the vessel will be disinfected, and those remaining on board will most likely undergo a quarantine procedure before being repatriated. The WHO has recommended 42 days of isolation for those leaving the MV Hondius.

“Mission accomplished. Between yesterday and today, we have evacuated the 125 passengers and crew members from 23 countries, who have either already returned home or are in the process of being repatriated. The ship, as you can see, has just weighed anchor. It left the port today at 7:00 pm,” said Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia Gomez in Tenerife.

Three new cases

Since the evacuations started, three new cases have been detected. Aside from the three passengers who died due to the virus, this brings the total number of confirmed patients to seven, while an eighth case has been listed as ‘probable’ by the World Health Organization.

One of the five French nationals who were on the ship is among those to have tested positive. The woman started to feel unwell on Sunday evening, 10 May, according to Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. In Spain, one of the fourteen evacuees has tested positive for the hantavirus.

The last confirmed case concerns an American passenger. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, the patient tested positive at a biochemical unit in Nebraska and is being monitored alongside fifteen others at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

“We had a CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] team at Tenerife. We had aeroplanes ready to take the patients. We have this under control, and we’re not worried about it,” commented Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy Jr on the situation.

Although the World Health Organization’s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has reassured passengers aboard by stating that the risk of another pandemic is low, the WHO has recommended 42 days of isolation for those leaving the MV Hondius. The U.S., however, has decided not to follow its guidelines, which “may have risks,” according to the director general.
