The tunnels, which lie beneath the ruins of the White House Glass Cone, date back to the 18^th century and once played an essential role in the region’s world-famous glassmaking industry. They were used to store raw materials, regulate heat and support the production process inside the cone, helping establish Stourbridge as one of Britain’s leading centres of glass manufacturing. 

As part of a major redevelopment project, the museum intends to transform the underground network into a permanent immersive attraction combining virtual reality, projection mapping and animated displays. Visitors will be able to follow more than 400 years of Stourbridge’s glassmaking history, with projections illustrating the entire production process in the very spaces where it once took place.

Although the museum already offers occasional guided tunnel tours, the new project will make the underground passages a permanent part of the visitor experience for the first time. Before opening, the site will undergo a series of health and safety improvements, including upgraded lighting, signage and accessibility measures designed to create what the museum describes as a “safe and free-flowing visitor experience”.

Museum director Alexander Goodger said the development forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen both the museum and the surrounding area.

“This is just one part of our new phase of capital development designed to boost the site for locals, expand the offer, give it a wider appeal and bring in tourists to the area who then go on to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants, regenerating the area,” Goodger said.

He added: “We want to bring in investment for the Black Country’s heritage. We have an incredible and unique history.”

The project also reflects broader ambitions to reinforce the Stourbridge Glass Quarter’s reputation as a centre for industrial heritage and cultural tourism. The museum houses a collection of around 4,000 objects documenting the area’s glassmaking legacy, alongside demonstrations and interactive exhibits celebrating a craft that shaped the region for centuries. 

The tunnels sit beneath the site once occupied by the renowned Stuart Crystal factory, one of England’s best-known manufacturers of cut glass until it closed in 2001. The loss marked part of the wider decline of the traditional Glass Quarter, where four major manufacturers disappeared by the late 1990s and early 2000s. 

The new attraction aims not only to preserve an important chapter of Britain’s industrial past but also to create a distinctive tourism experience capable of attracting visitors to Stourbridge and the wider Black Country.

Weight-loss medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have moved rapidly from specialist clinics into mainstream culture. They are discussed at dinner tables, in boardrooms and across social media, and they are increasingly shaping how people think about food, health, confidence and mobility. Yet a fresh analysis published in The BMJ offers a cautionary message for stakeholders hoping to interpret the trend too narrowly: weight loss does not automatically translate into better quality of life.

The review assessed 262 randomised trials involving 99,791 participants and 19 obesity drugs. It found that some treatments produced substantial reductions in body weight after one year, led by tirzepatide and CagriSema, but most did not show clinically meaningful improvements in quality-of-life measures. Greater weight loss was also associated with more side effects, higher discontinuation rates and, in some cases, loss of lean mass.

Why this matters for travel

Travel is closely tied to physical comfort, confidence, and perceived freedom of movement. For some travellers using obesity medicines, weight loss may make long-haul flights, walking tours, adventure activities, or resort experiences feel more accessible. Destinations and operators may see growing demand for wellness trips, active holidays, and post-weight-loss lifestyle travel from people who previously avoided certain kinds of journeys.

But the BMJ findings suggest the tourism sector should avoid assuming that pharmacological weight loss equals a straightforward improvement in travel experience. Gastrointestinal side effects, fatigue, treatment burden, and muscle loss can all affect how people plan and enjoy trips. A traveller may lose weight but still need flexible itineraries, rest periods, accessible transport, medical guidance or reassurance around food and medication storage.

Airlines and hospitality may need to rethink comfort, not just capacity

The travel industry has sometimes framed obesity in terms of seat width, passenger weight, and operational costs. The new evidence points to a more human-centred interpretation. If many users do not report meaningful quality-of-life gains after one year, airlines, hotels, cruise operators, and attractions should continue investing in inclusive design rather than assuming medication trends will reduce the need for it.

That means comfortable seating, clear mobility information, non-stigmatising service, flexible dining options, and easy access to medical support remain commercially relevant. GLP-1 use may change some passenger profiles over time, but it does not remove the need to serve travellers with different body sizes, health conditions, and levels of stamina.

A new chapter for medical and wellness tourism

The boom in obesity medicines is also likely to influence medical tourism. Patients already travel for bariatric surgery, cosmetic procedures, and lower-cost care. As GLP-1 access expands, a new category of traveller may emerge, as people seek consultations, prescriptions, follow-up care, or post-weight-loss procedures abroad. Some may look for destinations offering integrated programmes that combine medical oversight, nutrition, exercise, mental wellbeing, and recovery.

However, the study’s findings also underline the risks of marketing weight-loss travel as a quick transformation. Tourism businesses entering this space will need credible clinical partners, transparent pricing, realistic claims, and strong aftercare pathways. Because weight regain after stopping treatment remains a concern, short-term packages that promise lasting change could expose travellers to disappointment and providers to reputational risk.

Food tourism faces subtle shifts

GLP-1 medicines can reduce appetite and alter eating patterns, which may have implications for restaurants, hotels, cruise lines, and gastronomy and food production tours. Some travellers may prefer smaller portions, lighter menus, protein-forward meals, or alcohol-free experiences. Others may want to participate in food culture without overconsumption, making tasting menus, shared plates, and flexible dining formats more attractive.

For destinations known for gastronomy, this does not mean food tourism will decline. Instead, it may become more experiential and less volume-driven. Storytelling, provenance, local producers and sensory experiences could matter more than abundance. The opportunity is to design hospitality that welcomes travellers whose relationship with food is changing without making them feel singled out.

Since then it has garnered multiple awards, including TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award every year since 2018, a Gold conservation prize for its dedication to preserving habitats that attract insects and birds, and winner of Livestock Building of the Year in 2025 for its “state-of-the-art” aviaries.

Those aviaries house the creatures that perform in The Lost Feather, a free-flying bird show that is one of Kynren flagship experiences, alongside The Trusty Steed, in which medieval knights complete horseback stunts on horseback; Land of the Vikings, a “high-energy live-action Viking show”; the lakeside spectacular Legend of the Wear, and the characterful mazes of the Victorian Imaginariums.

Boasting medieval settlements, and plans for a recreation of a Victorian village, complete with shops, there are already a food court, refreshment kiosks, and a bar on site, as well as feasts offering history-inspired dishes and cocktails.

The day park is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 18 July to 12 September 2026. Day tickets (valid from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm) cost £30 (around €35 for adults and £20 (€23.50) for children, while standard night tickets for a show in the 8,000-seat Tribune arena cost the same but go up in price for deluxe and VIP experiences.

The park taps into current travel and leisure trends towards the experiential over the material, with one of the most anticipated events of the year in the form of The North East’s Biggest Pyromusical on Saturday 31 October 2026, a 25-minute fireworks display that, organisers promise, will be “a magical, multi-sensory experience lighting up the night skies above Bishop Auckland.”

NHS England is initiating the project in partnership with Olympic medallist Sir Brendan Foster, who has form in establishing sporting events such as the Great North Run. The ambition is to attract 100,000 walkers to the scheme.

It is anticipated that doctors and other healthcare workers will also promote the scheme among their patients since it comes in response to research showing that almost 17% of deaths are associated with a sedentary lifestyle, defined as less than 30 minutes of moderate exercise per week. In 2025, around 12 million people were found to fall into that category by a Sport England survey.

Foster has said that reaching 100,000 participants would create the world’s biggest ever marathon, and pointed to the health benefits of even small walks, taken regularly. “If someone walks 30 minutes five times a week, they could gain up to four extra years of healthy life,” he noted.

While Foster has expressed strong belief in the power of digital incentives such as being able to record performance data and streaks, the plan is also to bring public and private sponsors on board, and Techradar has reported that the government is in talks with various high street brands about lending their support.

Guidelines on how to take part in the English scheme are expected to be published in the months to come. For now, though, details about registration and exactly what the rewards might be are yet to be confirmed.

It is also unclear whether the scheme will be nationwide, though that is unlikely since the United Kingdom’s health services are devolved, meaning that Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland develop their own health strategies. In Scotland, where a walking step count challenge has been happening since 2014, participants have clocked up over 66 billion steps.

Some platforms, websites, and webshops have thus added a handy little feature during the past few years: an AI summary. In short, the tool summarises all reviews left by customers and gives users an objective overview of the comments, both positive and negative, left by others.

A new analysis by consumer champion platform Which?, however, shows that those AI summaries might not always be as reliable as one might think. According to the organisation, TripAdvisor’s AI summery of hotel reviews tends to concentrate on glowing reviews, while shortcomings are often ignored. The issues omitted included food poisoning, sexual harassment, and hygiene failures.

One of the cases studied by Which? is the Hotel Riu Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde. According to the AI summary tool, the place proves to be “popular with many travellers” with “spacious rooms” and “diverse restaurants”.

That particular hotel, however, is the subject of a group action lawsuit involving more than 400 holidaymakers who are claiming to have experienced illnesses linked to poor hygiene standards and food safety failings. The food poisoning comments and other reviews pointing to poor hygiene weren’t reflected in the AI summary in March according to Which? and the summary concerning the Hotel Riu Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde has since been made unavailable.

Which? noted similar patterns, in which the AI summary tool concentrated on positive reviews and left out negative remarks, for other hotels as well. With this in mind, Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, warned users to stay alert.

“The platform has a responsibility to revisit the accuracy of its AI summaries and AI chatbot. This failure to surface critical safety information is unacceptable and potentially life-threatening. In the meantime, users should scroll past these summaries and look at guest reviews, particularly one-star ratings, and at reviews on other sites, to make sure their next stay is a safe one,” Boland said.

Following the publication of Which?’s research results, TripAdvisor has not failed to react.

“No review content has been suppressed or hidden by the introduction of these tools, and the suggestion they pose danger to travellers is an unfounded claim that seems designed to generate controversy rather than inform readers. We believe our community understands that AI technology is still developing and has the common sense to check any AI advice against Tripadvisor’s billion-plus reviews and contributions,” a spokesperson commented.

According to the platform, AI summary tools are not intended to replace individual reviews -which can be easily found by clicking on the separate review elements – and instead provide a mere snapshot of the vast amount of comments available.

“We also have comprehensive safeguards in place to ensure important safety information is properly reflected across our platform. Our AI systems are designed to capture all types of traveller feedback, and we continuously monitor and refine our models. Our systems automatically suppress AI Summaries for listings that feature warnings from travellers about serious safety incidents such as death, drugging or sexual assault, helping ensure this content is highly visible to our community”, the TripAdvisor spokesperson continued.

Which?’s analysis confirms earlier research, showing AI tools have a tendency to tone down negative observations, instead choosing for shallower alternatives.

AI is everywhere and the travel industry is no exception. AI tools are getting more and more popular when it comes to trip planning, with many travellers asking ChatGPT for personalised holiday recommendations.

Travel platform Skyscanner is now jumping on that trend and has launched two new beta AI tools, available in English-speaking markets.

The first tool, named ‘Explore with AI’, allows travellers to search for personalised flight and destination recommendations through natural language prompts. The tool can provide all kinds of information, including price insights, weather, and travel tips.

For example, users can ask the tool to “help me find cheap flights to Japan in December,” then receive personalised recommendations based on their preferences. Travellers can also compare destination data side-by-side with a visual display, alongside AI-generated insights such as “September is typically 24% cheaper than December” and “Best of both: beaches and family trips.” During the first tests, Skyscanner noted a strong engagement, with a 60% click-through to flight options among those using ‘Explore with AI’.

The second AI tool, ‘Road Trip Planner’, concentrates specifically on putting together tailored itineraries. Travellers can provide the root with trip preferences, such as cultural or relaxing activities, and AI will then map out a road trip with personalised stops, while also recommending car hire options.

“We’re also continuing to test and evolve how we present flight information, including live flight tracking and trialling mapping price insights. By combining our deep travel expertise with the latest technology, our goal is to support travellers in making confident decisions and creating trips that are right for them, transforming travel planning into a seamless part of the adventure,” added Bryan Batista.

Moreover, Skyscanner updated some of its preexisting features. For example, DROPS – which scans airfares to flag price drops of over 20% over the previous week – now shows more frequent flight price reductions. According to the company, travellers would expect up to 822% more offers than before, making it easier than ever for customers to plan their next destination while paying attention to their budget.

Furthermore, the Flight Tracker tool provides travellers with real-time updates on gates, terminals, and baggage information, while Stays was extended to include five million (up from 3.5 million) accommodation options, ranging from budget stays to luxurious hotels.

Saunasaari, or “sauna island”, can be reached from Helsinki’s Market Square in minutes via a water taxi. Matching wooden cottages form a quaint wellness village on the island’s shores, which boasts uninterrupted panoramic views of the city’s entire eastern profile.

Making Saunasaari a stand-out experience is the island’s large traditional smoke sauna, the only such sauna in Helsinki. It sits alongside two traditional Finnish wood-fired hot tubs, called palju; separate male and female changing cabins; and several separate saunas. Paths gently wind between them and to the refreshing waters of the Baltic Sea.

Launching the venture, Nina Stenros, one of Saunasaari’s creators, noted how important the connection with the capital is, saying: “the Finnish archipelago, traditional smoke sauna, open-fire cooking, and genuine hospitality are all deeply rooted in our identity. We wanted to create an experience where visitors can step into that world without leaving Helsinki.”

The Finnish capital’s foodie reputation is not left behind either. Nina and partner Riky Stenros, are combining a restaurant experience with the island’s saunas, so visitors can indulge their skin, their senses, and their stomachs thanks to a char-grilled dinner menu cooked at the island’s summer kitchen called ‘Rök.’ They also offer a full dining hall capable of accommodating large dinner parties and a smaller, more intimate dining space.

A package including boat transfer, and a ‘sauna and dine’ experience gives access to two smoke saunas and the palju, for €128. Guests can also reach the island with their own boats. For private events, the entire island can be rented out. Reservations can be made for Fridays and Saturdays until the season ends on the 8^th of August.

Saunasaari taps into two wider travel and trends: the success of the spa and wellness sector which is currently valued by the Global Wellness Institute at a record $6.8 trillion, and is growing at around nine percent annually; and the premium leisure experience market, which is performing so well it is credited with propping up aviation during the recent oil crisis, has been recognised as a key area of growth in the US hotel sector, and even has luxury goods brands like LVMH partnering with Orient Express to launch the world’s largest mega yacht.

Travellers are increasingly being drawn to river cruises. According to a survey shared by TUI Group, Europe counted 1.5 million river cruise passengers in 2025, up 8% compared to 2024. As rivers are a popular option to escape the most intense summer heat, those numbers are likely to continue to increase over the next few years.

River cruise company AmaWaterways is anticipating a demand increase and will be launching a new ship in April 2027. The AmaRudi, as the vessel will be called, will be the sister ship of the already existing AmaMagna and will be the largest river cruise ship in Europe – measuring 443 feet (135 meters) in length with room for 196 passengers and 70 crew members.

The AmaRudi, which will be navigating the Danube River, was named after a man. More particularly, the vessel refers to AmaWaterways’ co-founder Rudi Schreiner, born and raised near Austria’s Danube River.

“AmaMagna changed what travellers believed was possible on a river cruise ship. We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now. More travellers are making the transition from ocean cruising to rivers, and many are looking for a sense of space and choice. AmaMagna was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, so having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades of river cruising,” Schreiner said about the new vessel.

Onboard, travellers will have no difficulty staying entertained. Aside from the 98 staterooms, the AmaRudi will feature a pool, a pickleball court, a spa, a fitness room, a multimedia room, and cafes and restaurants. With Journey’s Restaurant, The Chef’s Table, Rudi’s Wine Bar, and the Deck Club barbecue, cruise goers will not go hungry or thirsty while navigating the Danube.

AmaRudi will mark the second ship launch by AmaWaterways since the company shared it was planning to expand its global fleet to more than 50 ships by 2032 in April 2026. The expansion should include 15 new ships in Europe and more than 60% capacity growth beyond the region, including new ships in Africa and Asia.

The first ship scheduled to join the fleet will be the AmaNubia, debuting in September 2026 on the Nile. After the AmaRudi in April 2027 should see the launch of two extra ships: the AmaMaya on the Mekong and the AmaFiora on the Rhine.

“Our expansion reflects strong demand across both our established and emerging markets. River cruising is on a clear growth trajectory, and we are investing with purpose, expanding our global footprint while continuing to elevate the experience for our guests and our travel partners,” Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, said at the time.

AmaRudi’s inaugural cruise is set to depart on 11 April 2027 from Vilshofen in Germany and will set sail for Budapest.

The yacht has been hailed as the world’s largest sailing vessel at 220 metres. It boasts 54 oversized suites accommodating 110 guests, plus design features from architect Maxime d’Angeac, five restaurants, eight bars, private dining, a speakeasy, and a theatre space.

It’s all about tapping into soaring spending on ⁠high-end experiences. The ultra-premium experience segment is predicted to swell by between nine and 11% this year, outstripping the less than five percent growth forecast by a ​Bain study for the personal luxury goods traditionally produced by brands like LVMH.

Explaining that phenomenon and the partnership’s strategy, Accor’s Chief Executive Sebastien Bazin told Reuters that acquiring more physical objects is no longer enough for the ultra-wealthy. “When people are very rich, and they have seven homes, and 12 cars, and 17 watches… they still have a bucket list of things they promised themselves to ​do before dying. It’s not to have an 18th watch,” Bazin said, adding: “When you are getting rich, very rich, money hasn’t got the same ​meaning. The only thing that has a meaning is recognition. Have you become someone?”

Estelle Dinh, ​a professor at Swiss hospitality school Gilon, agrees. “If you’ve been to a Monaco Formula One, if you want to ⁠go around, ​you need badges everywhere. Certain people would have certain badges,” she said. The badge of experiencing a four-day cruise in one of the Corinthian’s deck suites starts at a suitably exclusive price of around €25,000.

Luxury goods are not entirely out of frame, though. LVMH is making sure its goods brands are represented on board, with a Guerlain beauty salon and bottles of Hennessy cognac laid on in the vessel’s priciest penthouses.

A key aspect of the Accor and LVMH deal is that both companies have the chance to take up reciprocal buy-out options in the future, reflecting the eye that the pair are keeping on changing consumer behaviour.

Despite the fact that the building is now very much linked to the late Queen Elizabeth II, even she had to be convinced to move to the Palace instead of staying at the nearby Clarence House by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Yet throughout the years, Buckingham Palace has served as a royal home and as an epicentre of royal business of all kinds.

In 2017, a large-scale refurbishment of the premises was initiated. Ageing electrical installations, lead pipes, and ancient boilers – most of those last changed some 60 years earlier – were causing an increased fire and water damage risk. Ten years and £369 million later, the works should be finished by 2027.

While many thought King Charles III and his spouse Queen Camilla would be moving in after the renovation, the monarch has now officially decided to stay at the close-by Clarence House, where he has been living since 2003. His decision seems to be motivated by two main reasons. First and foremost, the couple, both in their late 70s, are not keen on having to move themselves, their belongings, and their staff. Secondly, Buckingham Palace could thus potentially welcome more visitors throughout the year, and more areas of the building could become open to the public.

Nonetheless, Buckingham Palace will still remain the main location for all official royal business, such as state banquets, audiences, and garden parties. Just like before, King Charles III is thus likely to travel a lot between Clarence House and Buckingham Palace.

“His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life. It will be a buzzing hive of royal activity in every other way,” a palace spokesperson commented.

Moreover, according to James Chalmers, keeper of the Privy Purse, the monarchs will still have access to private rooms within the palace where they can retire during the course of a working day, and which could be utilised as potential residential accommodation in times ahead.

The King’s finances

For the first time in history, the British monarch has also shared a financial account. This shows, among other things, that King Charles III paid £12.9 million in taxes in the 2024-2025 period. The sovereign’s private income comes from the Duchy of Lancaster estate, as well as a collection of holdings and investments.

The accounts also show a boost in the so-called Sovereign Grant (state funding for the monarchy) since 2017 in order to finance the renovation works of Buckingham Palace. For 2027-2028, the Grant will be lowered to £99.9 million, down from £137.9 million during 2026-2027.

However, the core grant will be almost double the amount of the 2024-2025 core grant. The increase is being explained as necessary in order to finance maintenance at occupied royal palaces, to strengthen the royal cybersecurity, and to install energy-efficient heating systems.

From 9 July – 27 September 2026, Buckingham Palace will once again be opening its State Rooms to the public. Standard tickets cost £33.00 when booked in advance. Outside the Summer period, visitors can only get inside on selected dates for exclusive guided tours.
