While Portugal has always been a great destination for those who like to get a taste of authentic cuisine, over the last few years, the country has been transforming into a sought-after fine-dining hotspot.

This was once again proven during the yearly Michelin award show in Funchal, where no less than ten new restaurants were added to the Portuguese selection. Portugal now boasts 44 1-starred restaurants. According to the organisation, “Portuguese gastronomy is undergoing a remarkable transformation, rapidly ascending to new heights of excellence.”

Other awards

Moreover, restaurant Fifty Seconds in Lisbon, masterfully directed by chef Rui Silvestre, managed to secure a second star, bringing the total within the category to nine. The name was derived from the number of seconds it takes to reach the restaurant situated at the top of the Vasco da Gama Tower by elevator.

Next, two new restaurants were awarded with a Bib Gourmand distinction, highlighting their good value for money: Mesa15 (Petr Kiss, Leiria) and Taberna Sakra (Hugo China Ferreira, Alverca do Ribatejo). 1-starred newcomer A Cozinha do Paço also received a green star for its efforts in sustainability.

Finally, Francisco Quintas from Largo do Paço in Amarante won the Young Chef award, while the service-honouring Room award went to Adácio Ribeiro from Vila Foz in Porto. Carlos Monteiro from Casa de Chá da Boa Nova in Leça da Palmeira received the Sommelier Award, and last but not least, the JNcQUOI Table restaurant by Filipe Carvalho in Lisbon was designated as the Opening of the Year, a first for Portugal.

Budgeting a holiday isn’t a simple task. While transportation and accommodation might make up a big chunk of the money spent, there is usually one other main expense: dining. Contrary to the cost of transport and a hotel or holiday rental, it can be difficult to determine exactly how much you will spend on food beforehand.

Ferry comparison site FerryGoGo has made it a little easier for those travelling to or within Europe to estimate their dining out budget. The company has made a list ranking European destinations from the most to the least expensive, depending on the cost of a three-course dinner for two in a mid-range restaurant, excluding drinks. 

According to FerryGogo, those who are looking for the European destination with the cheapest dining out options should be heading to Kosovo, where the price for a dinner for two comes in at just €20.00. North Macedonia and Moldova complete the top three, which clearly indicates Europe’s cheapest region for culinary enthusiasts.

Travellers who aren’t afraid of an expensive dining experience, however, should be heading to Switzerland. At an average of €107.24 for a dinner for two – excluding drinks – the country puts itself at the top of the list, followed by Denmark and Luxembourg.

Aside from the most and least expensive dinner destinations, FerryGoGo also offers a list of countries that are both popular and genuinely good value. Portugal, Spain, and France might be more expensive than some other destinations, but according to the company, they make for the perfect compromise between luxurious and good value-for-money.  

“If dining out is a big part of your holiday (and let’s be honest, it usually is), your 2026 pattern is clear. For the best ‘foodie holiday per pound’, Southern Europe is the sweet spot, with Portugal, Spain, and France offering excellent value, especially if you are travelling by ferry to France or northern Spain and turning the journey into a road trip. If you want standout city-break value, places like Skopje, Sarajevo, and Krakow or Gdanskare hard to beat. And if your plans include Switzerland or Scandinavia, it’s not a ‘don’t go’, it’s a ‘go clever’ – pick a couple of big dinners, mix in lunch menus and markets, and your wallet will forgive you by the time you are back on the ferry”, FerryGogo writes.

As the prices in the study are based on mid-range restaurants, it is always possible to find cheaper or more expensive venues depending on personal preference or budget.

Both OpenTable and Yelp decided to find out for themselves. In order to determine which restaurants are the most romantic ones in the U.S., OpenTable analysed over 9 million reviews, while Yelp asked for help from its Elite members. Both reservation websites put together a top 100, although OpenTable didn’t rank the restaurants, and Yelp chose a classic top 100 approach instead; one restaurant came out at the very top of the lists.

According to Yelp, Café Monarch in Scottsdale, Arizona, should be considered the most romantic one in the country. OpenTable at least partially agrees, designating it as part of its top 100 and as one of the most romantic spots in the state of Arizona. Moreover, TripAdvisor previously named it as one of the three best fine-dining spots in the U.S., underscoring its potential as a successful Valentine’s Day dinner location.

Bouf’s

When looking for some Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in Tervuren, look no further than Bouf’s. Both the menu and the interior are welcoming, warm, and very enjoyable. Diners can choose to go à la carte, or the more adventurous-minded are welcome to try the so-called Table to Share, where the chef will surprise them with seasonal dishes, taking them on a journey to the South. The drinks menu, too, is well worth a good look, boasting a selection of Southern wines.

Capriccio

When Carlo Cosmai first opened his establishment in 1989, he initially only offered a catering service. Little by little, however, Capriccio transformed into what it is today, offering a selection of Italian and French dishes for guests to enjoy in a modern, while cozy environment. Between a Vitello Tonato, a Parmigiana Melanzane, and Ravioli Al Tartufo, one hardly knows what to choose. The take-away service still stands as well and could be especially tempting during the holiday season.

Taverne Gambrinus is, without a doubt, one of the most quintessentially Belgian places to have a bite in Tervuren. The wood-clad interior with its bold and beautiful bar, the menu, the beers, and the overall atmosphere are all part of an experience not to be missed while visiting Belgium, whether it is for a weekend or a longer stay.  After 20 years, former owners Anne and Monique took their leave in October 2025, passing the business on to Roshan Paudel from Leuven, who will continue the adventure.

Brasserie Den Engel is one of those, even though you could just as well order something from their own simple yet classic food menu. Il Carretino

Because one can never grow bored of Italian food, a stop at Il Carretino should be part of the Tervuren food experience. The traditional pizza oven is a good omen, as are the classic Italian dishes served without fuss yet with a lot of flavour. Pizza, pasta, risotto, panna cotta, and many more well-loved creations can be found on the menu, along with a selection of classic (Italian) aperitifs and wines.

Between the extensive offer of restaurants serving both Belgian and international dishes, the many cycling options, the Royal Museum for Central Africa, and the Arboretum, there is never a dull moment to be had in Tervuren. And more is yet to come, with the restoration of the iconic Bootjeshuis and its transformation into a restaurant scheduled to start in 2026, thus putting an end to its 6-year hiatus. With its splendid location next to the ponds in the Parc de Tervuren, the Bootjeshuis has been part of the city’s landscape for decades, with many locals having fond memories of the place that once rented small boats to navigate the waters.  However, the building has stood vacant for six years, as administrative hassles complicated the matter of finding a new operator for the site.

“The residents regret that such a beautiful location, with a terrace and a view of the ponds, remains unused. But assigning it to an operator must be done according to government regulations, which takes some time. So I don’t think there will be a terrace at the Bootjeshuis this summer”, Tervuren’s mayor Marc Charlier told the Belgian news site VRT Nws in 2024, when the city obtained a leasehold for the building from the Belgian Commission for Buildings.

Three professionals, one project

Following that transfer of responsibilities, Tervuren launched a competition at the beginning of 2025 in order to find new operators for the Bootjeshuis. The city has chosen the winning project on 18 November 2025, which will be led by culinary professionals Loïc Van Impe, Kevin Schietecatte, and Tom Cumps. In their turn, they have been assigned a 40-year leasehold for the building.

Once the leasehold goes into effect, which is scheduled to happen somewhere between the end of 2025 and the start of 2026, the three new operators will start by thoroughly renovating the location in order to make it fit for its new purpose. On the one hand, the Bootjeshuis will once again function as a restaurant; on the other hand, it will become a base for Tervuren’s tourism offer.

“Our menu will remain limited. We will be serving well-known dishes such as pancakes and croque monsieurs. We want to serve as many homemade dishes as possible, supplemented with the best from local producers. The fact that we can do this in the Bootjeshuis makes it extra special. I used to work here for years as a student. It’s wonderful that we can now turn it into a vibrant restaurant where everyone is welcome”, Van Impe told VRT Nws.

While large-scale renovations are needed to get the Bootjeshuis up-to-date, Loïc Van Impe, Kevin Schietecatte, and Tom Cumps hope to be welcoming their first guests in the spring of 2026. Boat rentals will no longer be provided, however, as this is not in keeping with the current environmental regulations.

The benefits of the new lease of life for the Bootjeshuis are twofold. Not only will the iconic location be revived, but the city also hopes to fund the restoration of the Warandepoort and the Chapel of St. Hubert with the income of the leasehold. Those works are scheduled to start in 2027.

Heading up the AKAI kitchen is chef Tibor Repa, who has worked at Zuma, Aqua Kyoto, The Ned London and The Ned Doha. The menu celebrating the fusion between Asian and Mediterranean is only in English, the aim being to link this venue to top-class contemporaries in London, New York and Tokyo.

Indeed, the carte oozes premium delights, from buns, baos and nori tacos to daring dessert combinations like yuzu cheesecake and matcha tiramisu. Meat specialities include Wagyu ribeye A5 (the highest grade of Wagyu beef) steak with truffle miso, roast chicken with miso Hiroshima sauce and roast duck. Fish lovers will rejoice at exquisite miso black cod, scallops steeped in green curry, cilantro and salmon roe and seafood including squid, crab and umami-glazed lobster.

All dishes are made with the highest quality ingredients, are supremely fresh, and carefully selected. Service is with a smile, and even the cutlery and tableware are beautiful. I was particularly taken by the delicate bronze mug that housed my delicious raspberry mule. My daughter’s virgin pina colada came beautifully presented with flowers.

After spicy, rock salt edamame beans to whet our appetites, I enjoyed a delectable ‘Nasu Dengaku’ (glazed aubergine with sweet miso and sesame). My daughter tried zingy miso soup with smoked tofu, shitake and wakame seaweed and the shredded duck bao with cucumber and hoisin sauce.

To follow, she chose sirloin beef and teriyaki sauce. I debated over delights such as seabass ceviche or teriyaki salmon and finally opted for the sublime Mediterranean sea bass with spinach and a delicate sesame sauce, with comforting rice and charcoal-grilled broccoli with umami dressing.

Keen to try AKAI’s original ice creams with an Asian twist, my Lilipink red chocolate-covered raspberry and vanilla mousse with a raspberry compote heart, madeleine, lemon and kaffir lime zest was to die for. My daughter tucked into a Japanese take on the French classic nougat glacé – a ‘vanilla nut entremet’ with pecan and white chocolate.

At AKAI you can go à la carte or be tempted by special four-course ‘taste of AKAI’ menus at €49 (€59 including a glass of wine or cava brut). Set lunches are also available from Tuesday to Saturday.

AKAI further boasts an extensive ‘signature and classic’ cocktail, wine and champagne list, including four key brands – Laurent Perrier, Dom Pérignon, Ruinart and Louis Roederer – to suit every occasion. Sakes even feature in AKAI’s special ‘Hakka’ cocktail, in keeping with AKAI’s Asian roots.

We will return to test AKAI’s amazing sushi, prepared by chefs on a grand sushi bar. We watched transfixed as delicate slices of tuna o-toro, salmon teriyaki and nigiri were created, not to mention sashimi, Futomaki and maki, including California snow crab and truffled beef rolls.

AKAI’s décor is exceptional: voluptuous velour seating, marble-topped tables, and a mirror-glass ceiling to bathe your dining experience in a warm gold glow. The design suits anything from skyline drinks and mid-morning coffee to festive celebrations, with at least four birthdays celebrated as we dined.

The party atmosphere increases as the night goes on, with electronic sounds changing to disco beats. AKAI also features live DJ sets every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening, playing house, R&B [rhythm and blues] or hip-hop.

AKAI’s lounge ‘club’, complete with plush velvet armchairs and sofas, is perfect for a glass of sake or after-work apéritif. High tables and chairs suit drinks, meals with friends or romantic dinners à deux. A more formal dining area is ideal for business meetings and birthdays alike.

Whatever you choose, you cannot miss AKAI’s undisputed claim to fame – the amazing view of downtown Brussels from its wall-to-ceiling windows. In short, this Japanese and Asian restaurant, which has shaken up Brussels’ culinary scene since its opening, may attract first for this show-stopping 100-metre high view. But you will also return for AKAI’s breathtaking, mouthwatering food served in a cosmopolitan, modern ambience.

Fourteen years ago, they opened Candelaria in the 3^rd arrondissement, a taqueria with a now-famous speakeasy in the back. Just a couple of years later, in 2013 to be precise, Candelaria was followed by Le Mary Celeste. Here, in the centre of the Marais neighbourhood, seafood, natural wines, and creative cocktails all play central roles.

Now, the dynamic duo has put their shoulders under a new project. A la Renaissance, which has been in the hands of Régine Robert since 1995, is an 11^th arrondissement classic dating back to some 100 years ago. Both inside and out, many of the building’s original features have been preserved, yet others were lost to time.

Carefully restored

Joshua Fontaine and Carina Soto Velásquez thus charged architect Johanna Etournel to give the restaurant a much-needed overhaul. Instead of scrapping everything old, she put together a wonderful mix of original details and new – or repurposed – additions. A la Renaissance’s floor, for example, was updated with a new set of refurbished bistro floor tiles, while the bar was embellished with a beautiful marble countertop. Artists Anna Hodgson and Harry Darby added a touch of playfulness with a fresco depicting Parisian figures, both past and present. Meanwhile, the red moleskin upholstery and tired neon lights were kept as a reminder of the building’s history.

As far as the menu is concerned, only a small adaptation will be made to the former offer. Guests will be able to enjoy their breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner at A la Renaissance. A self-service buffet of starters will enrich the lunch menu, while fries and roasted chicken will be centre-stage during Sunday’s lunch.

Other than that, diners will still be able to find French classics on the menu, as well as a wide selection of natural wines. In the evenings, a special cocktail menu will offer a little twist, and a handful of sharing platters will be the perfect choice for a dinner among lovers or friends. And last but not least, A la Renaissance will now work together with the Parisian roaster Ten Belles to offer delightfully-tasting cups of caffeine.

Nestled above Apia, the capital of Samoa, the retreat is dedicated to luxury hospitality. Featuring seven architecturally unique villas, the property will offer its guests a variety of amenities, including private infinity pools.

Known to the audience as one of the judges of MasterChef: The Professionals and Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby, Monica Galetti is also an Ambassador for the Samoa Tourism Authority (STA). She was born in Samoa and raised in New Zealand, where she has built her culinary career, deeply influenced by her Samoan heritage.

Over the course of 2025, she will be working with Moanalei’s culinary team to design a new menu, focused on celebrating Pacific flavours through a contemporary and innovative way of thinking. Caitlin Lei Sam, founder and designer of Moanalei Villas, expressed her excitement about the new partnership and highlighted that she sees this as a “dream.”

Chef Galetti will train TASI’s culinary team, together with Moanalei’s Head Chef, to further help develop the menu for the inauguration day. She will focus on using local, seasonal ingredients to enhance traditional Samoan flavours.

“Her culinary artistry and deep respect for her Samoan heritage align beautifully with our vision for TASI—a restaurant that tells our story with elegance, authenticity, and soul,” further commented Lei Sam.

Chef Galetti will also be joined by her spouse and professional partner, David Galetti, a hospitality director and experienced sommelier. He will oversee staff training, curate the beverage selection, and help create a welcoming and attentive service that reflects Moanalei’s dedication to offering guests unique experiences.

“This is a collaboration that is very dear to me,” said Monica Galetti. “It’s a way for me to reconnect with my Samoan roots and share the skills and knowledge I’ve gained over the years. David and I are incredibly excited to work with the Moanalei team to create something truly special together.”

Once open, TASI will offer seasonal menus complemented by panoramic views of Samoa’s mountains and oceans, providing an ambience as unforgettable as the food. TASI will not only be a luxury restaurant, but it will also be a place that will give visitors a genuine taste of the warmth and hospitality of the Samoan people.

The Brusselicious label was first introduced in 2024 as a way to meet the demand of both national and international visitors, looking for a way to identify establishments where they could get a taste of authentic Belgian dishes. Together with a panel of independent food journalists, visit.brussels thus decided to create an award that would put the Belgian culinary experience in the spotlight.

In order to qualify for the Brusselicious label in the first place, restaurants need to meet a number of criteria. They must be located in the Brussels-Capital Region and their catering establishment should be open to the general public. Moreover, they must explicitly promote Belgian cuisine, for example through a menu with a special section or a specific mention of ‘Belgian brasserie’, and are required to offer enough traditional Belgian dishes or be especially well-known for one dish in particular.

Once those criteria are met, an incognito journalist will pay a visit to the establishment to define wether or not the restaurant is worthy of the Brusselicious label. During their visit, the journalist will pay attention to things such as the overall quality of the experience, the quality of the service and the dishes, the value for money, and the quality of fresh chips, homemade mayonnaise, and beers brewed in Brussels.

When a restaurant is awarded the Brusselicious label, the recognition is valid for one year and can be renewed. Journalists will regularly be reviewed in order to make sure that the awarded restaurants still meet the criteria for the label. A revision of the list of restaurants, including new laureates, will appear every year just in time for Summer.

One year after the first awards, 14 newcomers have been added to the Brusselicious list, bringing the total number to 48 restaurants. Some of them are well-known among tourists and locals, while others might have just opened their doors to the public.
