]]> In a bid to stand out from the usual online content, IcelandAir has launched a humorous promotional campaign to find the world’s worst photographer and treat them to a series of outdoor adventures in Iceland that will feature in marketing activities during and after the trip.

Calling out to prospective participants, the airline’s advertising campaign declares: “We want to prove that even the worst photographer can take great photos of Iceland. Is that you?” To apply, candidates must have no professional photography background, no special interest in learning photography, and be “comfortable using a phone or basic camera without overthinking it.”

Leaning into the “world’s worst” concept as well as trends for authenticity that reject overly curated destinations, the rules also state that would-be applicants must be “frequently disappointed with your own photos,” and “occasionally surprised when a photo turns out okay.” What’s more, in a tongue-in-cheek twist, the hapless winner will need to be “ready to be internationally recognized for your unique photography style.”

The national flag carrier’s campaign appears to share DNA with the approach adopted by award-winning Comedy Roundtable podcaster, Greipur Hjaltason, whose content about his homeland takes a dry, comedic angle, exploring the peculiarities of Icelandic life, weather, and parenting, with a deadpan, almost melancholic style.

A “Spirit of Iceland” video explains that the country’s citizens combine a sense of hubris that makes them believe they can “do anything and do it tomorrow” as well as an “inferiority complex” and that this dual attitude “can either kill you or make you famous.”

To apply for the IcelandAir challenge that brings this contradictory personality together, participants are invited to answer six multiple-choice questions online, including: “How would you describe your photography skills? Truly awful; Quite bad; Bad but I’m enthusiastic; Occasionally okay; Above average.”

As well as being asked to rate their English skills, the application also requires candidates to upload a 60-second audition tape, explaining in one minute why their lack of skill makes them ideal for the task at hand. The winner will receive a 10-day trip to Iceland, including flights, accommodation, transportation, and a whopping fixed fee payment of US$50,000 for their photographs, content, and participation.

Any hopefuls will need to be 21 years of age or older, in possession of a valid passport and legally able to travel to Iceland, the UK and the USA, physically capable of the planned activities, and have no disqualifying criminal or legal issues.

1. Lake Göygöl

Nestled on a mountain near the border with Armenia, situated on the western slope of Gamigaya Peak at an altitude of 3,065 meters above sea level, Göygöl (Blue Lake) is one of the places to snap stunning photos. Once there, visitors can easily lose track of time, feeling as if they were in a fairy tale. Surrounded by blooming flowers and lush greenery while snow hasn’t fully melted on the other side of the lake, one can certainly forget about time and space, fully savouring the magnificent view and taking in the surroundings. This unique natural phenomenon enhances the lake’s allure and contributes to its status as one of the many ecological gems of the country.

Göygöl is a high-mountain freshwater lake of glacial origins, which has a unique water temperature dynamic. The water is, in fact, cooler at the shore than in the centre – a result of intensive underground springs and the presence of snow along its shoreline. Interestingly, the water is so clear the visibility reaches a depth of 3 metres.

2. Heydar Mosque

Designed in a modern architectural style, Heydar Mosque is another place to explore, while tapping into local religion and traditions. The mosque’s interior is adorned in a harmonious palette of white, yellow, and turquoise, creating a visual balance that evokes both the earthly and the divine. Each pillar showcases exquisite artisanal patterns, inviting visitors to pause and appreciate the intricate craftsmanship that elevates this structure from mere architecture to a true work of art.

Encircled by a newly planted garden, the mosque offers a tranquil oasis amid its desert-like surroundings—a peaceful retreat where silence and design speak volumes. Named in honour of former President Heydar Aliyev, the mosque is further embellished with delicate floral motifs that echo both reverence and renewal.

3. Alinja Castle

Perched on top of a mountain, Alinja Castle is the Caucasus version of Machu Picchu. The landmark is located in the Julfa region, one of the seven administrative districts of Nakhchivan. Reaching the castle is a 1,500-step climb until being on top, which reveals a breathtaking view of the landscape and nearby populated places. Once there, mesmerized by the scenic panorama, make sure to not only take photos but also explore other parts of the fortress, as there are multiple places with different views and angles to explore.

While the site is actually a recent reconstruction of the former fortress used by Nakhchivan’s various ruling dynasties in the Middle Ages, the jaw-dropping views from the top make it an inseparable part of every tourist’s bucket list.

4. Saat Meydani Hotel

The yard of Saat Meydani Hotel is a vibrant place to relax, especially at dusk and night when stars adorn the sky, and strings of lights twinkle overhead. Whoever fancies this can have dinner at one of the restaurants or a drink at the outside bar. With its traditional architectural design and the dim lights add, the hotel introduces another layer of romanticism, particularly at night when life starts to buzz. The name “Saat Meydani” (Clock Square) is also no coincidence, as part of the hotel building is a beautiful clock tower, allowing tourists and visitors to explore more of the local architecture.

5. Batabat

Lake Batabat and its surroundings are a serene escape from the city, especially for someone coming from the hustle and bustle of the capital, Baku. Located in the mountains of Shahbuz District, close to the border with Armenia, the area is known for its natural cold springs and lush nature. Just 65 kilometres away from the city of Nakhchivan, the Batabat area offers great spots for picnics and spending the day in nature. The area is famous for a lake where a floating peat island drifts across. The place is perfect for anyone who loves wild nature, as the area is covered with blooming wildflowers and herbs. Additionally, tourists can also stop by the local honey sellers, taste the local produce, and buy locally-produced eco honey.

6. Ilandag Mountain aka Snake Mountain

Ilandag Mountain is one of the most iconic spots in Nakhchivan, also being the symbol of the region. According to locals, it can be seen from every part of the Autonomous Republic, allowing everyone to have the opportunity to admire its beauty. The name Ilandag is derived from two words – snake and mountain in Azerbaijani, inspired by ancient stories of snakes once populating the area. Interestingly, no snakes are found there today.

Situated in the Julfa District, the mountain rises to 2415 metres above sea level and is an important ecological area for birdwatchers with sightings of rare vultures and larks. What’s more, Ilandag is a volcanic mountain primarily made of andesite and dacite (lava rocks), with steep rocky slopes and drought-resistant plants.

 Besides its beauty, the mountain is surrounded by mysticism and legends, looming around telling Biblical stories. Adrenaline lovers have the opportunity to climb Ilandag Mountain, which is a nine-hour return hike.

7. Ashabi Kahf Cave aka Seven Sleepers’ Cave

Not far from the Julfa regions, the Ashabi-Kahf cave is another place in Nakhchivan drenched in legends and mysteries. Known as one of Azerbaijan’s most cherished pilgrimage sites, the cave offers a serene natural sanctuary for its visitors. The cave holds significant importance in the Islamic religion because it is associated with the Quran. In chapter 18 of Islam’s holy book, a group of young believers in Allah sought refuge in the cave and slept there for more than 300 years. Nowadays, according to rumours and legends, visitors can still make out faint shapes said to be the sleeping figures.

Upon arrival, a peaceful setting unfolds, framed by rocky mountains and vibrant greenery. Getting to the cave requires a scenic climb that offers a stunning view of Nakhchivan’s natural beauty. The well-maintained path makes it easy for everyone to access, no matter their age.

8. Geysariyye monument

The Geysariyye monument is a 17th-century bazaar that has now transformed into a historical museum, with various objects from Nakhchivan’s history on display, each telling its own story. Located in the city of Ordubad, the Geysariyye is a building beautifully adorned with beautiful blue and floral pattern tiles.

Once inside, visitors have the opportunity to travel back in time and experience local culture from up-close while marvelling at skilfully crafted artifacts of everyday life. In addition, the beautifully decorated windows add another layer of splendour to take in, inviting guests to be captivated by the vibrant interplay of light and colour, filling the museum’s interior.

9. Yusif ibn Kuseyir Mausoleum

The mausoleum of Yusif ibn Kuseyr, built in the 1160s, is a small octagonal building from baked bricks and finished with a pyramid-like roof. Each side of the mausoleum showcases a distinct geometric pattern, featuring triangular, hexagonal, and rhomboid blocks that are meticulously integrated into the foundation.

It is worth noting that this site, along with the Momine Khatun Mausoleum, also located in Nakhchivan, was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 1998 by Gulnara Mehmandarova, president of the Azerbaijan Committee of ICOMOS – International Council of Monuments and Sites.

10. Khan’s Palace

Nakhchivan Khan’s Palace stands out as an architectural marvel, captivating visitors with its beauty, while also serving as a testament to the region’s khanate era. History enthusiasts simply have to visit this place due to its stunning Oriental design.

Between the mid-18th and early 20th century, the building was the residence of the rulers of the Nakhchivan Khanate, one of many small independent statelets to appear in the Caucasus and Iran following the death of Nadir Shah in 1747. The palace, with its three richly decorated floors and “shebeke” stained-glass windows, transitioned from a carpet museum to a dedicated museum of Azerbaijani history in 2010, focusing on that intriguing period.

This shop inspired Flourish and Blotts and the Hogwarts Library, as J.K. Rowling lived in Porto during the early nineties. 3. Igreja Capela das Almas

Known as the Chapel of Souls and Chapel of Santa Catarina, this beautiful church is located in the civil parish of Santo Ildefonso of Porto. The building was constructed in the eighteenth century and is popular with photographers, with many posing and taking pictures from outside the beautiful building. The external walls are covered with blue-white ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, which depict scenes from the lives of saints.

4. Ribeira

1. Samarkand at first glance

Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world and arguably the most famous one of modern Uzbekistan. Located in the south-west of the country, the city was founded in 700 BC and was a main hub along the Ancient Silk Road.

2. Samarkand from within

Shah-i-Zinda, meaning “The Living King”, is a necropolis in the north-eastern part of Samarkand. The entire complex, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage inscription of Samarkand, comprises over 20 mausoleums and other ritual buildings from the 11th to the 19th centuries.

3. Tashkent

Yangi Oʻzbekiston, or Yangi Oʻzbekiston bogʻi, is a major park in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent. One of the largest parks in the country, it was established on occasion of the 30th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence. Opened on 31 August 2021, the independence monument in the park has become a worldwide recognized symbol of Tashkent.

4. Bukhara

Less known than Khiva or Samarkand, Bukhara is a hidden gem that embodies the spirit of the ancient Silk Road. This 2,500-year-old city, the 5th largest in the country, is another UNESCO World Heritage site in Uzbekistan, renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval townscape and monuments.

5. Khiva at a glance

Within the city of Khiva, the Itchan Kala settlement is hidden. 10-meter-high brick walls separated the inner town from the rest of the Khiva oasis, which once functioned as the last stop for caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. Spanning over 26 hectares, the inner city houses 51 ancient monumental structures and 250 dwellings.

6. Khiva from within

Traditional woodcarving has an old and rich history in Khiva and some of the most beautiful examples of it can be seen inside the Juma Mosque. Lines and lines of wooden columns — 213 in total — give a feeling of depth and perspective to the inner courtyard. Called karagacha, the elm columns have delicate sinuous patterns carved on them.

7. The Aral Sea

The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest lake in the world, but, over the past decades, climate change and human activity have led to its gradual shrinking. Located on the border between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the once great lake has shrunk so much it has separated in smaller basins, leaving behind a desert formed on the dried–up seabed – the Aralkum.

8. Zaamin Reservoir

The Zaamin National Park, located in the Jizzakh Region on the northeastern border of Uzbekistan, is the oldest nature reserve in the country. Created in 1926 as the Guralash Nature Preserve, the Zaamin National Park has recently been nicknamed the Uzbek Switzerland because of its lush vegetation. Contrasting that, in one part of the park, the Zaamin Reservoir is surrounded by what seem like endless plains.

9. Ugam-Chatkal National Park

Ugam-Chatkal National Park in northeastern Uzbekistan, is a one-off in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Described by the national tourist agency as “a real miracle of our planet”, it spans 574,000 hectares in the Bostanlyk, Parkent and Akhangaran regions, in Tashkent.

10. Camp under the stars

There are many yurt camps across Uzbekistan, giving a glimpse into centuries-old traditions and the way of life of locals. Some of the most famous yurt camps in Uzbekistan are: “Aydar”, located 10 kilometres from the Aydarkul Lake, “Safari”, near the city of Nurata, “Muynak”, on the shore of the Aral Sea, and “Ayaz-Kala”, near the settlement of Ayaz-Kala.

Their analysis revealed the popular ski town of Chamonix in France to be the most Instagrammable. The resort is known for its steep yet beautiful ski slopes, meaning it might not be entirely beginner-friendly. Nonetheless, Chamonix attracts up to 100,000 visitors a day during ski season, making it, without a doubt, one of the most visited.

The second in the list might be lesser-known yet turns out to be just as beautiful. The town of Zakopane, in Poland, doesn’t just have a stunning ski resort but also boasts a snow maze and an ice palace during the coldest months of the year, making it a perfect family destination.

1. Getting there

Tervuren and its glorious walks and parklands are reachable from central Brussels on tram 44, along boulevards lined with embassies and through the Sonian Forest – and said by many to be one of the most beautiful tram rides in the world.

2. Welcome to Tervuren!

Pass through one of the gates of the Warande to step into Tervuren. The Tervuren Warande, a name used for hunting grounds, used to be surrounded by a wooden palisade. Between 1625 and 1632, it was replaced by a sturdy brick wall with ten gates, to better keep intruders out and game in. The remnants of the wall and its gates were designated as architectural heritage in 2021.

3. Walking around

Crossed by a dense network of avenues and footpaths to allow visitors to discover its every nook and cranny at their own pace, Tervuren offers a great getaway from hectic city life, rain or shine. Take your time to stroll along through forests and parks.

For the most tranquil escape, make your way to the Geographic Arboretum, which sits like a crown on the head of the majestic Sonian Forest, on its north border. Countless trees and shrubs from the North, West and East of North America, from Central and Mediterranean Europe and from the Middle and Far East of Asia are grouped here by region of origin in some hundred sections, covering a total of 120 ha.

4. Guardian of the land

Standing in front of the Africa Palace, as if guarding the land behind it, is a statue depicting two deer “After the fight”, giving the artwork its name, with the winner triumphantly standing with his head held high above the victim. Considered one of the masterpieces of Viscount Charles du Passage, the original 19th century iron structure had to be replaced with a bronze replica in 2011 due to irreparable rust damage.

5. Reconciling with the past

The Royal Museum of Central Africa, renamed the Africa Museum, has been standing in Tervuren for over a century. Having started as a colonial exhibition of King Leopold II, the museum has gone through major changes over the past years, reopening in 2018 after a 5-year renovation process aimed at decolonising the exhibitions.

Playing an important part in the museum’s societal function is also its role as a scientific institution. From the beginning, the museum doubled as a scientific institute and today it continues to foster research not just in cultural anthropology and history, but also in the biodiversity of Africa, sustainable management of natural resources, human impact on ecosystems, geodynamics and natural resources, among others.

6. Cycling around

If instead of walking you prefer to move a little faster, cycling is just as good an option. With dozens of kilometres of paths, and routes ranging from shorter options around the Tervuren Park to as long as 98 km to explore the entire region, there are more than enough options to choose from.

7. When the forest is your back yard

The Gordaalmolen, also called Spaans Huis (the Spanish House), was originally a watermill of the Dukes of Brabant, located in the hamlet of Goordaal. The oldest mention of the building dates back to 1324, but the current appearance is the result of a renovation in 1533 and restoration in 2021.

The name Spaans Huis is relatively new and only started appearing on postcards at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Not serving as a watermill anymore, it has been a protected monument since 1993 and established architectural heritage since 2021.

]]> Autumn on Earth is generally known as a colourful spectacle. Yet what many of us maybe don’t realise is that this natural phenomenon can just as well be observed from space.

Satellites have become an indispensable tool and source of information over the past few decades. Nowadays, they are used for a wide array of applications, going from navigation to space observation and everything in between. And, every now and then, the data observed by those satellites is worthy of a piece of art.

Both the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA have been releasing images of autumn on Earth, but seen from Space. The results are just as stunning and colourful as one might imagine and allow us to get a broader sense of this natural phenomenon, caused by trees ceasing to produce chlorophyll due to colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours.

The ESA released three separate satellite images: one depicting the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines in Italy, one showing the western border of Greece and North Macedonia and one of the southeastern Carpathian Mountains in Romania. All show varying hues of greens and browns, giving us an idea of the different temperatures at varying heights. The three regions are all rich in European beech, or Fagus Sylvatica, known for its majestic colour changes.

NASA in its turn also released several satellite images of autumn on Earth. One of them depicts the so-called Michigan Mitten, Michigan’s Lower Peninsula known for its brightly-coloured maple trees. This phenomenon can clearly be observed in the images taken from space, while the same image also allows us to detect other species of trees going southwards, with many conifers throughout the state providing an unchanging backdrop of green.

Another remarkable image released by the space agency is that of Northern Mongolia, specifically showing the forests around Lake Hövsgöl. As NASA posted a picture of this summer as a comparison, it is not hard to see the difference a season (or a month) makes.

The high-altitude forests mainly consist of Siberian larch or Larix Sibirica, which takes on a bright yellow colour in autumn. As the season is fairly short in Mongolia, chances are the bright colours have already changed out for a thick layer of snow and ice by now.

London dominates

London is a sensible place to start, boasting 50% of the list’s top wizarding 10 spots. It’s unsurprising that London does so well when it is a hub for international visitors and home to the magnificent Gothic revival King’s Cross St Pancras Station and its mythical Platform 9¾ (ranked at number five with 139,046 hashtags and 13.4K Tiktok posts).

From there, catch the District and Circle underground to Monument in the business district, five minutes’ walk from Leadenhall Market, which sits at number 10, with 70,272 Insta hashtags celebrating how its Queen-Anne-style arcades stood in for Diagon Alley where Harry shops for magic tomes and wands.

The Millenium Bridge, iconically destroyed by Death Eaters in the Half-Blood Prince, features at number four, with 198,716 Instas and 1,532 Tiktoks.

Other London locations score even higher in the latest ranking. The buzz of Piccadilly Circus adds drama to a scene that saw Harry, Hermione and Ron escape Bill and Fleur’s wedding, and has done the same for 402,553 Insta and 20,000 Tiktok posts, sending it straight in at number two.

For a more esoteric option, why not visit Great Scotland Yard, where, Visit Britain reminds us, Harry and Mr Weasley descend via a phone box into the Ministry of Magic. It doesn’t feature on the Instagrammable top 10 probably because, sadly, the phone box was only a prop and does not exist IRL.

Paid-for locations in London

Many of these free-to-visit locations appear on alternative round-ups, such as Visit Britain and Visit England. But one paid-for London attraction that rates highly in the Digital PR list that is missing elsewhere, is London Zoo. Slithering in at number three, with over a quarter of a million Instagram hashtags and 9,321 Tiktok posts, the zoo’s Reptile House was where Harry learned he can talk to snakes.

And don’t forget, of course, the Warner Bros Studios. Though it doesn’t feature in the Insta-ranking, Visit England tells us the studios were “used in the filming of all the Harry Potter films, and many of the fantastic props, mythical items and iconic sets were saved. Take a journey through the famous sets, pose in your favourite scenes, and taste some delicious Butterbeer.”

Moving north

Travelling north, like Harry, another place where Diagon Alley was filmed is The Shambles in York, England. There you’ll find a historic, narrow street lined with overhanging, timber-framed, medieval buildings. Having collected 100,130 Insta hashtags, it places sixth in the Digital PR list. Beware though, TripAdvisor and Reddit comments reveal that some locals are fed up with the “Potterisation” of the area.

Around 50 minutes further north by trains that go every half hour, is Durham Cathedral, a favourite on nearly all Potter-focused lists for its embodiment of the inside and outside of Hogwarts. It ranks as the eighth most Instagrammable location with 86,612 Insta hashtags.

Scotland

Scotland meanwhile has an enviable host of Potter-themed landscapes. Some might predict that the money shot when it comes to Instagrammable Potter locations has to be the 

The feat of engineering cameos as the “bridge to Hogwarts” and some might say that no Harry Potter film really starts until the Hogwarts Express has carried Harry over its 380-metre span of 21 arches, 100 metres above the breathtaking Scottish glens.

Despite the glorious views, it ranks only at number seven in the Digital PR list, with 89,332 Insta hashtags, possibly due to its remote location in the Highlands, which reduces the number of people who can easily make it there. Daily train services between Fort William and Glenfinnan take you over the viaduct itself. You can alight at Glenfinnan for other views, or get there by car by travelling west of Fort William on the A830. And for the ultimate Potterbrag, consider going full Hogwarts and taking the Jacobite Steam train that also crosses the viaduct.

And number one?

According to Visit Britain, if you’re a camper you should drop in on Loch Etive, Argyll and Bute while you’re not too far from the Fort William area. That’s the spot where Harry, Hermione and Ron camp in Deathly Hallows Part 1.

But it is Glencoe that takes the number one spot in the Digital PR list. Again it’s in the Fort William area, where dramatic mountains and misty valleys provide the moody surroundings for Hogwarts in the Prisoner of Azkaban film, and have garnered an incredible 635,708 Instagram hashtags, alongside 33K posts on Tiktok.

For a round trip, Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales is on the southward route back from Scotland. An unearthly limestone amphitheatre, Hermione and Ron hide from Voldemort here. With 71,244 hashtags on Instagram, Digital PR calculates it just beats Leadenhall Market, placing ninth out of the 10 on their Harry Potter Instagram odyssey.

But too often we end up with multiple shots of the same thing and are unsure how we can make the most of the tools available to us. Here’s a quick guide to taking better smart phone shots.

The rule of thirds

Some cameras allow you to bring a grid up on screen, dividing your frame into thirds horizontally and vertically. Rather than placing your subject immediately in the centre, which can give a rather dry composition, try placing it towards the top or bottom third to create a more dynamic feel.

Be a curator

See your photos as a collection. This will help you limit shots of the same type while encouraging you to think about how the images can complement each other through texture, colour, tone and composition.

It’s all in the detail

Foreground, mid-range and distance details are a good way to liven up landscapes or cityscapes. Move the camera lower or to a different angle (or turn it upside) to try to ensure you have a focal point of interest in the frame. Play around with your phone’s “tap to focus” feature to centre different items. As Instagram has taught us, contrary to popular belief, including someone or something in shot, be it a passerby with a stripy umbrella or an architectural detail, gives richer context and relief to images.

Be on the lookout

See the shapes within the everyday. Z forms, paths that go to a vanishing point, bridges, staircases – these all provide trajectories the eye can follow. Sometimes just moving the frame slightly can be the difference between a shot with inherent visual interest and one that feels less complete. What’s more, watch out for streetlights or beams of sun or vertical objects just behind your subject that will pull focus or provide unintended comic effect.

Portrait mode

Most phone cameras have a portrait mode these days. It provides automatic background blurring and focuses on your subject’s face. But many of us are still guilty of cutting off our subjects in strange places and making photos look odd. Not only hands, feet and heads, but cutting someone off at the thigh is also a big no no. Decide in advance whether you want a tight focus. Think in terms of headshots, upper body shots or full-body.

Accessories

Tripod

Sometimes we want to take photographs with long exposure, for waterfalls, or shots of the night sky. Due to instability and even the tiniest of hand trembles, these will always be blurry without a tripod. Choose one that is compact, supports the weight of your camera and has rubber or non-slip feet. Some tripods are so small these days, they can fit in your pocket. Tripods are also great for timelapse photography and selfies.

Lights

Talking of low light conditions, an external additional light can illuminate your subject more subtly and with preferred angles than your cameras flash. Choose an easy-to-carry version with good battery life and adjustable brightness. Ring lights meanwhile provide a soft, even tone for vlogging and make-up photography.

Standalone lenses

If you are really looking to up your smartphone game, an additional lens could be the answer for sharper shots, great for wildlife. Enhancing your zoom capacity without sacrificing resolution is the main reason to buy one. Some additional lenses offer a range of cinematic effects and starburst bokeh.

For those who are really keen, full kits are available, offering stability tools, remote shutter facilities, external lights and various other tricks of the content creation trade.

]]> Bad behaviour from tourists has become a recurring theme in travel articles, with the best ways to respect Italy’s ancient artefacts a frequent topic of discussion. In Berlin, Germany, though, you don’t have to carve your name into a monument to find yourself in trouble. Tourists may invoke local disapproval simply for taking a photograph.

A range of commentators have been noting that Germans are not as fond of putting themselves out there on social media as some of their visitors. Taking a selfie in public can attract unwanted stares – and – as some have found out – public shaming.

Restraint, surveillance and counter culture

Writing for the BBC, Katy Bettes says that Germans exercise greater restraint than some other nationalities on social media. They guard their privacy fiercely, perhaps, notes Philipp Masur, assistant professor and digital communication specialist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, as a result of years of terrifying surveillance by the Stasi (Ministry for State Security).

Berlin’s radical counter-culture and club scene grew in great part out of a reaction to such state control. In my 2019 novel, I wrote about a seedy club scene in the UK, where a no-camera rule allowed abusive behaviours by the rich and powerful to reign. In Berlin however, those enjoying the freedoms offered by the underground music and kink scenes are more likely to be at the opposite end of the power spectrum. Not only do they find it “cheesy” or “lame” that someone should want to post on social media, but they do not welcome their own image being caught in the background of someone else’s social media post.

No judgement?

Meanwhile, many in the rest of the world have attempted to move on from judging those who take photographs of themselves. Since the early days of the selfie, it has became clear that women take more photos and use them in different ways on social media than men. Instead of judging those women, some have pointed out how unusual it is for women to be taking control and exhibiting the confidence to put their image in the public domain, enjoying their own gaze for once, instead of being subject, as they have been for centuries, to the male gaze.

And anyway, why is it anyone else’s business what you do with your own image?

Big business

Of course, it is, literally, other people’s business. Big business. Facebook or “Meta” is the world’s 10th largest company and is worth over $550 billion. Through data scraping and AI, it and other social media companies make money analysing your photographs and posts and targeting adverts at you – and your followers.

But, again as I wrote about in Sea of Bones, it takes a certain amount of privilege to be able to reject the need for a social media profile. For many entrepreneurs, the selfie is a major promotional tool they cannot afford to do without.

Yolocaust

It is nonetheless surely possible to promote yourself and your business without causing offence, and one Israeli artist has launched a project to illustrate just that point. Shahak Shapira’s art project entitled “Yolocaust”, recontextualises selfies people have taken at Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial. “Over the last years, I noticed an interesting phenomenon at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin: people were using it as a scenery for selfies. So I took those selfies and combined them with footage from Nazi extermination camps,” explains Shapira.

Pictures of tourists leaping in the air, doing yoga on top of the monument and grinning in front of symbolic gravestones are edited. With brutal irony, Shapira extracts the gurning selfie-takers and portrays them standing on top of piles of Holocaust victims’ bones. The resulting juxtaposition is horrifying. He will remove the resulting image from his website only if the original poster feels ashamed enough to contact him to ask him to take it down.

Visitors to Germany, Berlin, and to the Holocaust Memorial – be warned.
