The agenda includes specialised seminars and round table sessions organised jointly with UN Tourism, along with a scientific practical conference on innovation in the tourism industry. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed that the forum be organised at a high level and that Turkmenistan’s tourism potential be presented in line with government priorities.

The forum will bring together tour operators, airlines, hospitality representatives, and experts in cultural heritage and ecotourism. Around 100 foreign delegates and more than 60 participants from Turkmenistan’s tourism sector are expected. The business programme will feature presentations of new tourism products, discussions on international cooperation, and showcases of modern technological solutions.

A special focus will be placed on ecotourism, ethnographic routes, and health and wellness tourism, alongside B2B and B2G meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation between public institutions and the private sector. UNESCO Sites and Heritage

Turkmenistan possesses a rich UNESCO inscribed heritage, including three major World Heritage cultural sites, Ancient Merv, Kunya Urgench, and the Parthian Fortresses of Nisa, as well as the transboundary Cold Winter Deserts of Turan and the Silk Roads Zarafshan Karakum Corridor. Its intangible heritage includes traditional Turkmen carpet making, the Kushtdepdi song and dance rite, and dutar craftsmanship and performance, reflecting the country’s Silk Road legacy and living traditions.

E‑visas and easier entry

Turkmenistan is following the path of other Central Asian countries by opening up to tourism. A law adopted in April 2025 introduces electronic visas and simplifies entry procedures for foreign visitors. Travellers will be able to apply through a simplified online system without a letter of invitation, a move expected to boost tourism revenues and trade, in line with regional examples such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as previously reported by Travel Tomorrow.

A country of under‑explored potential

Turkmenistan has significant untapped tourism potential. According to QRA Centre, “within the Central Asian region, Turkmenistan stands out as a country where historical continuity and natural diversity converge, yet its tourism potential remains only partially explored.”

The country combines ancient centres of civilisation, key Silk Road sites, Islamic era architecture, and distinctive natural landscapes, forming a strong foundation for cultural and educational tourism.

Natural highlights include the Darvaza Gas Crater, often referred to as the “Gates to Hell”, and Yangykala Canyon, alongside major Silk Road heritage sites such as Merv and Nisa. Merv is among the largest and best preserved oasis cities of the Silk Road, while Nisa reflects early Parthian statehood and Kunya Urgench showcases the achievements of Khorezm architecture.

The capital, Ashgabat, is internationally known for its white marble architecture and holds a Guinness World Record for the highest density of marble clad buildings, making it a distinctive urban tourism destination.

On the Caspian coast, the Avaza National Tourist Zone offers resort tourism and conference facilities and has hosted major international events. It is considered a key pillar of Turkmenistan’s recreational development strategy, with hotels, parks, and leisure infrastructure, according to official sources.

According to the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “the Turkmen part of the Caspian Sea has immense potential for the development of wellness, recreation, and ecological tourism.” Tourism is increasingly seen as an important sector contributing to the country’s socio economic development.

The Avaza National Tourist Zone in Balkan Province is attracting around 150,000 visitors annually, according to The Caspian Post.

Health and balneological tourism also plays a role, particularly at Mollagara and Archman sanatoria, which draw on mineral waters, therapeutic mud, and specialised rehabilitation treatments. According to the government website, the Mollagara resort includes medical facilities, accommodation, and rehabilitation services, forming part of a broader health tourism offer.

Caspian Coast and cooperation with Kazakhstan

If Turkmenistan continues to open its tourism sector, cooperation with neighbouring Kazakhstan could help transform the Caspian coast into a stronger destination for European and Asian travellers.

In Kazakhstan, Aktau has seen growing visitor numbers and infrastructure development, including new hotels and a planned airport in Kendirli. More than 350,000 tourists were recorded in the first nine months of 2025, according to regional data cited by Astana Times. This trend suggests potential for complementary itineraries linking Aktau and Mangystau with Avaza and Turkmenbashi.

Historical and Natural heritages

Turkmenistan’s natural and cultural assets remain largely under explored. The Darvaza Gas Crater, located around 260 km north of Ashgabat, has been burning since the 1970s and remains one of the country’s most recognisable attractions. Yangykala Canyon, in the Balkan region, offers striking multicoloured cliffs and remote desert landscapes.

This masterpiece of medieval Islamic architecture houses the tomb of Ahmad Sanjar and is notable for its monumental scale and distinctive dome, once covered in turquoise tiles. High-level forum in Ashgabat

Organised within the framework of the 30^th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality and the International Year of Peace and Trust proclaimed by the United Nations, the International Forum on Peace and Trust brought together an impressive array of global leaders, including heads of state and government from whole around the world. Among the distinguished participants were Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and the leaders of Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Also in attendance were Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in his address, underlined that peace, trust, and cooperation must become the cornerstones of the new world order. Emphasising that Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality is constitutionally guaranteed, Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed that non-use of force, peaceful conflict resolution, and respect for human rights form the core principles of the country’s foreign policy.

In his speech, he said:

“The value of peace, cooperation, and culture, alongside the emergence of new foundations and visionary approaches to the international order, increasingly shape contemporary global dynamics. The level of cooperation achieved with our partners and our determination to meet shared objectives have acquired new significance within the context of the International Year of Peace and Trust.“

Historical context

Thirty years ago, on December 12, 1995, Turkmenistan declared its permanent neutrality, four years after its independence. Article 1 of the Constitution of Turkmenistan states that “Turkmenistan, by law, has the status of permanent neutrality.”

Turkmenistan declared its permanent neutrality in the context of independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and at a time when significant tensions existed in its neighbouring country, Afghanistan. During Turkmenistan’s independence in 1991, Afghanistan was in a severe civil war. After the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, President Mohammad Najibullah, who came to power, was trying to protect his government from the attacks of the Mujahideen. The situation in Afghanistan was characterised by continuous conflicts between government forces and resistance groups, as well as political instability. Turkmenistan’s government policy was shaped in response to such instability in its neighbouring country, which will be discussed in more detail below.

Concept of neutrality in Turkmenistan

The concept of neutrality has developed in Turkmenistan and has helped build the country’s identity. Neutrality has been integrated into Turkmenistan’s political culture and its process of de-Russification. Since its independence, the concept of neutrality has promoted Turkmenistan’s interests at national, regional, and global levels.

After independence, Turkmenistan’s leaders opted for a political culture of neutrality to achieve their dual objectives of de-Russification and formulating their foreign policy in a way that would integrate them into the international community and counter the threats and pressures of the neo-Great Game in the Eurasian region. Initially, the concept of neutrality is more related to wars where sovereign states adopt neutrality to avoid any form of involvement in an armed conflict between states (Saima Ashraf Kayani & Raja Qaiser Ahmed, 2018).

Turkmenistan chose neutrality after the end of the Cold War, and it is the only state to have opted for neutrality in peacetime. According to Article 1, Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality is the basis of its foreign and domestic policy aimed at strengthening stability and consent in society, developing friendly and mutually beneficial relations with states in the region and around the world.

The principle of permanent neutrality contributed to Turkmenistan’s rapid integration into the outside world. In this context, it provided comprehensive opportunities for establishing and developing economic and political ties with international actors. This process not only allowed Turkmenistan to build diplomatic and trade-economic ties but also enabled it to complete the priority of forming its internal political system (Hamzaoğlu, 2020: 654).

Achievements of Turkmenistan for regional and world peace

Mr Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, told journalists that “Turkmenistan is playing a very important role in international relations,” particularly in cooperation with the UN. “In these troubled times, I commend Turkmenistan’s policy of neutrality,” he said. He was encouraged that relations between Central Asian countries have improved in the face of these challenges, and regional cooperation has deepened, again highlighting the important role played by Turkmenistan.

Mr Guterres also noted that Turkmenistan has made “significant progress” towards achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adding that the UN country team is engaged with the government in identifying gaps and risks.

Turkmenistan’s neutrality has allowed the country to develop diplomatic relations with many diverse countries. It has established bilateral relations with the United States, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, China, India, Pakistan, and many others, staying away from the clutches of the new Great Game in the region.

Additionally, as noted by Ünlü (2016) in his research, thanks to its permanent neutrality, Turkmenistan has played a crucial role in developing the legal status of the Caspian Sea. Until 1991, the status of the Caspian Sea and the region’s energy resources were governed by treaties between Soviet Russia and Iran. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the littoral states gained independence, and this increase in the number of littoral states led to several issues. The emergence of new littoral states of the Caspian Sea, the inability to determine continental shelves, and the sharing and use of energy resources led to disputes among the states in the region. Not only has Turkmenistan been the main country supporting the development of the legal status of the Caspian Sea, but it has also developed plans and projects for transporting Caspian gas to Europe. In these approaches, plans for transporting the region’s energy resources to the global market through different blocs were proposed. The first of these plans is a gas distribution plan coordinated by Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey, and the second is the transport of Caspian gas via Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia (Ünlü, 2016).

Finally, Turkmenistan has supported the development of peace and conflict resolution in the Central Asian region. In this context, Turkmenistan hosted negotiations between parties during the internal conflicts in Tajikistan and Afghanistan in the 1990s. In 2007, the UN’s special mission, the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, began operations in the capital, Ashgabat (Terzioğlu, 2012). Certainly, Turkmenistan has played a key role in promoting peace in Afghanistan. Turkmenistan used its position of neutrality to organize forums and conferences on peace and stability in Afghanistan. For example, in 2015, it co-organized a regional conference in Ashgabat with NATO on peace and stability in Central Asia and Afghanistan. Turkmenistan provided humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, including building infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, and supplying electricity and drinking water, as noted on NATO’s official website.

More than fifteen leaders confirmed – and a broader diplomatic ecosystem in the room

Participation has been confirmed by more than 15 heads of state and government, alongside senior delegations expected from across regions. Turkish and Central Asian representation is expected to be strong.

The forum is designed to be broader than a leader’s stage. Participation includes UN Member States, UN bodies, international organisations, research centres, and civil society representatives – a mix intended to connect political authority with expertise and societal voices.

What will actually be discussed

The forum is structured as an in-person event built around one high-level plenary and three thematic sessions, with space for bilateral meetings on the margins.

In other words, neutrality here is not silence. It is an attempt to widen diplomatic space – a place where dialogue can happen when other channels are blocked, and where shared interests (humanitarian cooperation, sustainable development, regional connectivity) can be insulated from the shockwaves of great-power rivalry.

Expected outcomes

The forum is set to conclude with the adoption of a Final Document and the development of proposals for further international events – signalling an effort to build continuity beyond a single summit day.

That matters because the credibility of “peace and trust” diplomacy is always measured the same way: by what happens next. Do delegations establish working-level processes? Do they agree to keep technical cooperation moving even when politics are tense? Do researchers and civil society leave with partnerships that outlast the headlines?

That matters for Europe too. The EU has publicly welcomed strengthened regional cooperation in Central Asia and noted Turkmenistan’s initiatives connected to peace and trust in the official EU language following EU–Central Asia engagements.

Neutrals, as the organisers argue, are not meant to be silent bystanders; they can be useful conveners – hosting conversation when others cannot share a table, and keeping channels open when politics pushes them shut. Reading this theme, the country that most strongly reflects it to me these days is Turkmenistan. And the timing could not be more symbolic: every year, on the very same day that the world celebrates tourism, Turkmenistan also celebrates its Independence Day – a double reminder that transformation is as much about preserving identity as it is about opening up to the world. In recent years, I have witnessed this transformation first-hand by engaging in tourism development conferences and exchanges with officials there, from strengthening cultural diplomacy to opening new pathways for sustainable tourism.

Tourism as a driver for economic diversification and inclusion

One of the most concrete examples of this transformation could be seen this August, when Turkmenistan hosted the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Avaza, its serene resort town on the Caspian coast. The event brought together governments, international organisations and experts to discuss connectivity, sustainable growth and the role of tourism as a driver of diversification. Known for its calm shoreline and welcoming atmosphere, Avaza proved to be a fitting setting for such an international gathering, blending natural beauty with the spirit of dialogue.

At the Youth Forum, where I was invited to speak, I underlined a reality often overlooked: for many travellers, holidays are still synonymous with beaches and coastlines. For landlocked countries, this perception can be a barrier, one that can only be overcome by offering something stronger — an authentic cultural identity and meaningful experiences that place destinations on the global map.

I emphasised that safeguarding cultural heritage is as vital as climate action, because the two go hand in hand. Without preserving culture, we risk losing the very stories that make these destinations unique. Beyond tourism, cultural heritage nurtures social cohesion and local pride, anchoring communities even as they open up to the world.

For emerging destinations like Turkmenistan, there is also a rare opportunity to design tourism differently: prioritising quality over quantity, and sustainability over short-term gain. Such an approach can create high-value, low-impact experiences that protect identity while driving inclusive growth.

These discussions resonated strongly in other sessions of the conference, reinforcing one clear message: tourism is not peripheral for landlocked countries; it is central to their economic resilience and global visibility. As a member of UN Tourism, Turkmenistan is part of this global conversation, translating international goals into local action. This vision resonates strongly with this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, underlining how the country is aligning its tourism journey with global calls for sustainability and inclusivity.

Cultural nights on the Caspian coast

Turkmenistan’s commitment to transformation is not only global but also regional. The Avaza conference made this clear in practice: alongside high-level debates, the evenings were dedicated to Central Asia Days, where neighbouring countries showcased their heritage, art and traditions. These cultural exchanges highlighted Turkmenistan’s path of collaboration — building bridges with its closest partners and presenting the region as a shared tourism destination.

Along the shoreline, each country set up its own pavilion, vibrant spaces where national heritage, crafts and flavours came to life. Strolling past the pavilions felt like walking through a living tapestry of the region’s shared heritage, reminding everyone of what makes the region unique: its art, its music, its vibrant colours and its warm, welcoming people.

Every night, a different country took the stage. Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan brought their music, art and traditions to life, while Azerbaijan, with its deep cultural and historical ties to the region and its shared Caspian coastline, added its own distinctive colours to the programme. Concerts, traditional dance performances, art exhibitions and food tastings turned the conference into a living showcase of the region’s diversity.

What struck me most was how natural and effortless the spirit of collaboration felt. These were not separate showcases by individual nations but a shared statement that Central Asia is a single, vibrant tourism market with enormous potential. Watching delegates, artists and visitors mingle in front of the pavilions, I couldn’t help but feel that the region’s real strength lies in this ability to work together rather than compete.

Azerbaijan’s contribution stood out for its scale and authenticity. The delegation arrived on a chartered flight, bringing officials, artists and priceless pieces from national museums, including exquisite carpets that reflected the country’s rich heritage. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture, Azerbaijan’s pavilion and evening programmes were a highlight of the Cultural Days. The country’s most renowned singers and traditional dance ensembles took the stage, sharing Azerbaijan’s cultural richness with guests from around the world and leaving a lasting impression.

Uzbekistan also made a statement that was impossible to miss. Its national pavilion, designed as a traditional Uzbek hovli (inner courtyard), quickly became one of the most visited attractions of the conference. Walking through it felt like stepping into the essence of Uzbek culture: intricate models of Registan Square and the Khudoyar Khan Palace, vibrant textiles and pottery, finely crafted woodwork and traditional household items. The pavilion also highlighted climate initiatives and innovative approaches to sustainable development, striking a balance between heritage and progress.

Weeks before the conference began, Uzbekistan’s team had already arrived in Avaza to prepare the pavilion — a level of commitment reflected in every detail. Beyond its cultural showcase, the country’s participation was both strategic and multi-layered, reaffirming Uzbekistan’s focus on regional integration and sustainable development.

The strong commitment of neighbouring countries in Avaza showed that regional cooperation is not only a matter of diplomacy but also of tourism. Turkmenistan’s close ties with its neighbours create opportunities for combined itineraries linking the Caspian shores with Silk Road heritage. In a region where travellers increasingly seek multi-country journeys, such partnerships strengthen Turkmenistan’s position both as a destination in its own right and as a natural bridge connecting Central Asia across the Caspian with the Caucasus. This inclusive approach benefits not only Turkmenistan but also the entire region, because in Central Asia and the Caspian region, progress in tourism can only be sustainable when it is holistic, interconnected and not limited by national borders.

New pathways for accessibility and connectivity

Looking ahead, several developments are set to shape Turkmenistan’s tourism landscape in concrete ways. Preparations are underway for an electronic visa system, which will simplify entry and make the country more accessible to international visitors. New direct flight connections, including the long-anticipated resumption of routes with Uzbekistan, are in preparation and expected to further enhance regional mobility and open the door to multi-country itineraries linking the Caspian shores with Silk Road heritage. Turkmenistan is also working on restoring flight connections with Almaty, underscoring a shared commitment to strengthening tourism and trade cooperation across the region.

Equally important for travellers is the sense of safety. According to Safeture Risk Maps 2025, Turkmenistan is classified among the world’s low-risk destinations. This reputation is closely tied to the country’s long-standing policy of Permanent Neutrality, a principle that has anchored its stability and peace-oriented image for three decades. This year, on 12 December, Turkmenistan will celebrate the 30^th anniversary of that neutrality — a milestone that reflects its diplomatic identity and strengthens its positioning as a secure and welcoming destination for visitors. For tourism, neutrality is more than a foreign policy stance; it is a guarantee of stability and an invitation to explore a destination where heritage, hospitality and harmony converge.

Taken together, these steps reflect a journey that is still unfolding but already transformative. With vision and resilience, Turkmenistan has the opportunity to turn symbolism into substance — writing a story that is authentic, inclusive and built to last. In this light, on this double occasion of World Tourism Day and Independence Day, warm congratulations go to Turkmenistan for embodying both identity and transformation: rooted in heritage, guided by hospitality, sustained by peace and inspired by vision.

Since its independence from the USSR in 1991, the gas-rich Central Asian country has imposed very strict restrictions on would-be visitors. However, if a traveller had an invitation from the immigration service, they could get a visa upon arrival. Foreigners will now be able to apply for visas through a simplified online system, eliminating the need for a letter of invitation. The aim is to lead to a significant increase in revenues and trade. Tourism revenues in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have tripled since their major visa changes in early 2010, while Uzbekistan’s tourism revenues have increased sixfold.

According to Turkmenistan’s state-run newspaper, President Serdar Berdymukhamedov will determine the specifics of electronic visa systems, the types of visas available, the issuance procedure and their validity period. 

While boosting tourism is the most visible effect, the easing of visa restrictions is also expected to stimulate trade, investments and regional connectivity. This small but important move shows the country which suffers from a poor international image is willing to normalise relations, an unavoidable step if it hopes to achieve WTO membership, new trade deals, or greater UN engagement.

Since gaining independence, Turkmenistan has heavily relied on its vast natural gas reserves as its main source of income. However, recent developments suggest a growing interest in diversifying its economy through expanded regional trade and tourism. In March 2024, it began implementing a gas swap deal with Türkiye, a project that had long been in the pipeline. This will be the first time Ashgabat ships gas westward without passing through Russia.

The country’s most famous tourist attraction is its blazing natural gas crater known as the ‘Gates of Hell’, located approximately 260 km from the capital. The fiery crater has been burning for decades. Believed to have been formed in the early 1970s by the collapse of a gas well, geologists deliberately set the crater alight to prevent the spread of methane gas. Although it was originally expected to burn out within a few weeks, it still burns today and is one of the most surreal sights in the world.

Beyond the fiery crater, Turkmenistan offers other potential tourist destinations, including the Yangykala Canyon – often dubbed the ‘Turkmen Grand Canyon’ – and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Merv, Nisa and Kunya-Urgenc. These ancient cities were important stops on the Silk Road, a historical legacy that neighbouring ‘Stan’ countries have successfully leveraged to attract visitors.

The capital, Ashgabat, also holds the Guinness World Record for having the highest concentration of white marble buildings in the world.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) emphasizes that tourism can be a powerful force for peace, promoting mutual understanding and respect among different cultures. 

According to the latest data from the UNWTO, international tourism experienced a strong recovery in 2024, nearing pre-pandemic levels. An estimated 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded globally, representing a near-complete recovery (99%) of pre-pandemic figures. This marks an increase of 11% compared to 2023, with 140 million more international tourist arrivals.

Looking ahead to 2025, the UN Tourism Panel of Experts has identified geopolitical risks – excluding ongoing conflicts – as a growing concern. These risks are ranked as the third most significant challenge for international tourism, following economic factors.

During the official celebrations of World Tourism Day on 27 September 2024, the Secretary-General of the UN Tourism emphasized that “without peace, there is no tourism.”

Building on this sentiment, the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust reinforces the importance of collective action in fostering stability. This year’s agenda invites nations to enhance preventive diplomacy, build trust, and promote inclusive dialogue — values essential for creating a safer and more connected world. By prioritizing peace, countries create safe environments that encourage travel, leading to increased tourism revenues and strengthened international relations.

In this context, the role of multilateralism is more significant than ever. Principles of dialogue and inclusion open pathways to address shared challenges such as disarmament, cyber resilience, and climate change. Initiatives like declaring zones of peace in Central Asia, the South Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean highlight the transformative power of regional cooperation. The Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, commemorating its 15^th anniversary in 2024, exemplifies the success of collaborative efforts and serves as an inspiration for other regions to pursue peaceful solutions.

In recent years, Central Asia has experienced a remarkable surge in its tourism sector, emerging as an increasingly attractive destination for travellers worldwide. This growth is driven by the region’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, the historic allure of the Silk Road, and improved political stability, which together have laid a strong foundation for a thriving travel industry. Furthermore, there is a rising interest in eco-tourism and sustainable travel practices among visitors to the region. 

According to recent statistics, Central Asia’s travel and tourism market is projected to generate revenue of US$1.81 billion in 2025, with an expected annual growth rate of 7.21%, leading to a market volume of US$2.36 billion by 2029. This positive trend is closely linked to the region’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace and stability, which play a pivotal role in creating a safe and welcoming environment for tourists.

In this context, the International Year of Peace and Trust underscores the vital role of mediation and conflict resolution in ensuring global stability. Developing specialized mediators and strengthening peacekeeping and diplomatic frameworks are key steps toward fostering understanding and collaboration. Initiatives to establish global mediation programs within the UN framework equip nations with effective tools for resolving disputes and building enduring partnerships. Such efforts not only contribute to peace but also establish the stable environments necessary for tourism to thrive, reinforcing the link between global stability and economic growth.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda and youth engagement platforms demonstrate the value of inclusivity in shaping effective policies and governance. Inclusive societies not only foster peace but also attract tourists seeking diverse and enriching experiences.

The connection between peace and development is undeniable. Addressing global challenges such as food security, energy needs, and environmental sustainability requires collaboration and innovation. The International Year of Peace and Trust advocates for strengthening global frameworks to address these priorities, paving the way for shared prosperity.

The partnership between countries and the United Nations is essential for the success of the International Year of Peace and Trust. Turkmenistan, for instance, has taken significant steps to contribute to global initiatives, including promoting sustainable transport, energy security, and circular economy practices. Projects proposed by Turkmenistan, such as the Global Framework Program for the Transition to a Circular Economy, the Global Atlas of Sustainable Transport Connectivity, and the Alliance for Cooperation in Global Energy Security and Sustainability, highlight the interconnectedness of environmental and economic priorities with peace.

For instance, strengthening movements like the Non-Aligned Movement and promoting neutrality in international relations can enable nations to build trust and establish secure environments. The International Forum of Peace and Trust in Ashgabat in December 2025 will serve as a platform for nations to share successes, renew commitments, and outline a path towards a harmonious future.

The significance of such efforts cannot be understated. By fostering peace, countries not only create an environment for sustainable development but also unlock the full potential of their tourism sectors. 

As we navigate the possibilities of 2025, the principles of dialogue, cooperation, and equity championed by the International Year of Peace and Trust provide a hopeful roadmap. The potential for peace to drive mobility and tourism is immense. By investing in trust-building and prioritizing stability, nations can create opportunities that extend far beyond borders. Together, we can transform this year into a milestone for peace and create a legacy of optimism and unity for generations to come.

Born in 1724, Fragi grew up under de Safavid Empire, in what is now the southern region of Turkmenistan, at a time when raids were a common sight. This, and the fact that his father was himself a poet, undoubtedly contributed to his literary style.

“He was the first among the predecessors, to have a powerful, defiant voice, openly speaking out against the enemies not only of his people, but also the peoples of the entire region”, Chinar Rustamova, Executive secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, wrote in an op-ed for Society.

Fraga’s poems are a chronological encyclopaedia. They are of utmost importance when trying to understand and reconstruct the political and economic events of his time. Moreover, according to Rustamova, “he managed to rise above tribal prejudices and called to unification of Turkmen tribes to fight against foreign enslavers, to create a single Turkmen state”.

Magtymguly Fragi’s impact on literature must be noted too. Many poets who came after him were inspired by his works, both nationally and internationally. “It is a rare example of the oral and written heritage of the Turkmen people and the peoples of the entire Turkic-speaking world, since they embody the traditions of the oral poetry of the Turkmen people and the literatures of Central Asia and Europe. His poems sound like a hymn to humanism, patriotism, unity, and cohesion, they have become a reference point and a model for scientists and poets of many countries”, UNESCO acknowledges.

A collection of poems by Magtymguly Fragi consisting of more than 80 divans, copied from his original manuscripts by his close relatives, fellow villagers, poets, scientists, as well as folk singers, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2023. Turkmenistan’s proposal to celebrate the 300^th anniversary of the birth of the poet was also included in the List of significant dates for joint celebration with UNESCO in 2024-2025.

Also known as the “Shining of Karakum” or the Darvaza gas crater, the site has become a popular tourist attraction with the surrounding area also being popular for wild desert camping.

1. Drilling accident

But how did this giant hole measuring roughly 70 meters wide and at least 20 meters deep show up there? The story dates back to 1971, when Soviet geologists (Turkmenistan was part of the former URSS) were looking for natural gas in the Karakum Desert.

Accidentally, during drilling operations to extract gas, disaster struck and the ground beneath the drill rig collapsed with the rig plunging into a natural gas cavern. The accident led to a vast amount of methane leakage into the air and geologists decided to set the crater on fire, not even dreaming that the hole would be burning endlessly up until today.

Despite the drilling theory being cited by several media outlets, including AFP, Reuters, Live Science and many others, some facts are disputed regarding the origins of the flaming crater.

Interviewed to the media outlet NPR, George Kourounis from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society talked about the conflicting stories: “It was definitely a natural gas drilling operation that went awry that collapsed into a sinkhole. A lot of people say it happened in 1971. But when I was in Turkmenistan, I spoke to some local geologists, and they were very adamant that it happened in the 1960s and didn’t catch on fire until the 1980s.”.

2. Natural gas

Turkmenistan lies on massive natural gas deposits, being the fourth country in the world with the largest reservoirs. The country’s economy is largely dependent on gas exports, perhaps the reason why President Berdymukhamedov wants to finally take action and close the burning gap.

“We are losing valuable natural resources for which we could get significant profits and use them for improving the well-being of our people,” Berdymukhamedov told AFP as he cited health and environmental concerns for the people nearby the burning crater.

“I understand why they might want to extinguish this fire. They want to access the natural gas reserves that are underneath. It’s a bit of an embarrassment to the government,” said Kourounis.

3. Terminating a rare phenomenon

In 2010, the Turkmenistan’s leader asked experts to quash the “Gates of Hell” but the task proved unsuccessful. Later on, in 2013, he declared the part of the Karakum Desert with the gaping hole a nature reserve.

Having won the status of an incredible natural phenomenon and becoming a hotspot for tourism, in 2014, the burning hole was featured in an episode of the National Geographic Channel.

In 2019, the burning crater became even more notorious, especially on the Internet, when President Berdymukhamedov shared a video of himself performing doughnuts next to the flaming hole.
